neat stuff - didn't know all those remixes existed - I got it on 12 from when it came out + on a CD compilation years later. not even sure which mix it is, but it has that 'human resource' sound so it might be theirs? always love the big boom boom boom sound those kinda songs have, especially in a big club. lisa DJ Nikadeemas wrote: I think you're searching for track #8 which clocks in at 123 bpm's on http://www.discogs.com/release/58853 that features the lovely guitar loop from Nirvana's Teen Spirit - Original Message - From: lisa [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sun, 27 Jul 2003 17:48:33 -0400 To: Sakari Karipuro [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: (313) Vestax or Technics lol! that's great :) altho' ... remember that old song nine is a classic by Ace the Space? that sounded pretty neat slowed wAy down (like -4 to -8 range). lisa Sakari Karipuro wrote: not to diss anyone personally, there is ABSOLUTELY no need for pitch above +4% or less than -2%. if you come into such situation you don't have enough records with you. sakke

hmmm - obviously I've missed some of the finer moments of the 313 list (wasn't around when this was discussed previously) - hehe! experimental is fun, but sometimes it goes horribly wrong. the chipmunk vocals, the scary point of tipping into that awful European hi-energy beat range (you know the ones - songs that have half-naked girls on the rekkid covers usually or some really buff dude topless) or the too-slowed songs/vocals that sound like a scary drug trip. I think if DJs use judgement get creative great things can happen. It's good to play around. There should be no limits. trivia anyone? years back there was a mainstream radio station in NYC that got complaints for playing pitched-up songs (to fit more in an hour) so they stopped doing it. I think it was Z100? lisa Phonopsia wrote: I've said it before too, and I'll say it again: I could not disagree more. Angola sounds wrong at less than +6. Pitching up records has always been a part of Detroit techno. As a general practice a techno label like UR (when it was a techno label) would release a record a little slower then the actual DJ speed. on 7/27/03 9:48 PM, lisa at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sakari Karipuro wrote: not to diss anyone personally, there is ABSOLUTELY no need for pitch above +4% or less than -2%. if you come into such situation you don't have enough records with you. sakke

Re: (313) Technics MK5's
I have a pair of 1210MK5's, but haven't actually powered them up yet (waiting for my cartridges to be mailed to me). As for these features... I can't comment on the sound quality yet, but I can't see any physical differences in the table vs. my old MK2's (mind you, they're not in front of me right now) other than the pitch reset button, recessed power switch, and place to hold a spare headshell... There is no click/indent at zero pitch on the pitch slider too, of course... The Arm-end Scale for Quick Weight Setting I think (!) is simply some marked lines (a scale) on the end of the arm itself, near the counter-weight, that you could use to set the weight more roughly than using the scale that is actually on the weight itself. I don't recall my 1200MK2's having this. But at any rate, I guess it is just another one of these extremely small changes that have been made to the table over the generations. I have no idea what the Stylus Kick Cancel and Anti-Skip might be, but curious to know as well... I could find little information about the difference in the MK5's prior to purchasing them, but they were only about US$15 more than the MK2's, so what the hell? The lids I had on my 1200MK2's were hinged to attach (via insertion) to the back of the turntable - the lids on my MK5's simply rest on top of the table and need to be picked up and placed somewhere else during use. This is probably nothing new though (?). Supposedly these tables have a white LED instead of a bulb for the pop-up light? Maybe that was an 'innovation' long ago as well though? And just so that no one is confused: The panasonic-europe may lead some to believe that the MK5 has +/- 16% pitch adjustment, but this is apparently not the case. I guess this is only for the MK5G, and they've not been very careful about how they've posted the information on their page. (The Technical Specifications button from the panasonic-europe page, that you can access by going to technics1210.com, http://www.panasonic-europe.com/technics/products/ product_detail.asp?range=dj , specifically lists Total quartz locked continuous pitch adjustment +/-8% and +/-16%). If I hear any dramatic difference in the sound when I play them, I'll be sure to post to the list ;) Brent On Monday, July 28, 2003, at 11:24 AM, Langsman, Marc wrote: Didn't know these existed until I saw the posts here today... RE: (313) Vestax or Technics
My 2 cts in this discussion: Since 7 months I have two Vestax PDX 2000 at home after using Technics for about 13 years. It was some getting used to at first. They have more power than the 1200, so you have to use a little more force to slow down or speed up the platter. Also, the pitch control fader is very light, which I don't like (the only thing). Whereas with a technics pitch, you actually have the feeling you are sort of pushing the record to a slower speed, with the vestax fader there is no friction whatsoever, so it's fairly easy to accidentaly tip the fader a little bit up or down while mixing. The straight tone arm does wonders against skipping and for scratching, although I totally suck at that, but I'm making progress very slowly. The ultra pitch and the reverse button are nice gadgets, but no more than that. I occasionally use them to create effects when recording a mix. I still have to find a purpose of the quartz lock button and I really don't understand why Technics persists on including this on the newer models as well. If anyone can explain to me what this functionality is good for, please do! However, I've noticed that I'm actually faster on a technics now. Don't know what the reason is, the higher force of the platter or the +- 10 pitch control, but the difference is significant (Jeff Mills watch your back ;-) ) The argument that everywhere technics are used so you should buy those too is a bit nonsense. When I start playing somewhere with technics, at first I brake or speed up a bit too fast, but that takes just a few seconds to get used to. Well before I throw the first record in it's all business as usual. So in short, it doesn't make much difference what you buy. I bought mine because I see the vestax as progress and I hate the placing of the on/off button of the technics and the fact that the needle often skips too easily (although that can easily be solved by bringing your own cartidges to a gig). The vestax also seem to have less problems with feedback (rumble). As far as durability goes, hard to say after 6 months home use mostly, but at least they feel even more robust than 1200's to me and with that magnetic motor, there's not much that can wear out. On the other hand, how many 1200's do you encounter where the light is still working? I'm happy with them and I wouldn't trade them in for technics. I've heard good things about the Vestax decks (e.g reverse function, plus/minus 16 capacity) but their seems to be a big question surrounding how durable they actually are. I've had SL1210's before and although they are reliable i've always been disappointed by their lack of features. I've heard good things about the Vestax decks (e.g reverse function, plus/minus 16 capacity) but their seems to be a big question surrounding how durable they actually are. Apparently Technics have just released a MK5 version as well (albeit minus a reverse function). Would be interested in hearing other peoples opinions. Sorry if this one's slightly off-topic and if you've received it a number of times (currently having problems with a new computer). RE: (313) Vestax or Technics
Thanks for the comparison...I agree about the pitch, I like the resistencace on the 1210s but vestax are definitely moving things forward quite substantially especially with the straight arm etc. all the vestax needed (imo) was diecast aluminium shell instead of the plastic... all that stuff about industry standard doesn't wash with me, if you know how to mix then it doesn't matter (to me at any rate) what you're doing it on as long as they are direct drive. As as slight tangent I was considering in investing in some Shure M44 scratch carts to stick on my 1210s as Im fed up with the skipping - does anyone use these / know if they will do the trick ? i was thinking of doing this soon as well as my stantons have had it there are less scratch oriented carts too from shure (m44g, the m447s are the scratch ones)are they any good? ta robin...

Re: (313) Technics MK5's
I'm not sure if these are the new Technics I used in Liverpool (Scott?) but something very weird happened with the pitch at one point. Basically it started wavering all over the place. When I mixed out, which was like mixing out of a badly drummed disco record, the new record was at about -6, which was not right at all but prior to that I thought I'd maybe had a wee bit too much to drink. Using +/-8 gives you a hell of a lot more room to work when spinning less than 90 minutes. I've been noticing in web/magazine articles people talking about set times and how there are fewer clubs with DJ residencies. Maybe it's because I've been looking at bios on DJ from the 70s and early 80s but even in newer articles I've noticed DJs talking about how it's slowly degrading club atmospheres. I've been thinking about this quite alot lately as I'm ramping up to start my regular Saturday night gig and hopefully nurture a following. So, what's up in your neck of the woods - how many places have the standard guard that you can rely on without the extra guest DJ? every night they present? We've got several nights here but usually they have the same rotating DJs (and up to four or five per night) that get only an hour or two (tops) on the decks - and now that they have pushed the closing times back on hour it seems like they've just added an extra name to the line-up instead of giving the DJ more time. There are some funny tunes on their second album wild planet as well. Always play the B-52´s when not feeling so well. Always works for me. Cheers people. I dug most of his set, from classic Jacko to Osunlade, the Paperclip People track the one on Los Hermanos. Jaguar always goes down well even though I was surprised he played it, the Beyonce record is a good pop record as well. Didn't really like the way he ended the set but that's a minor really, overall it was something different very enjoyable. G. p.s Even I spotted Shari Vari, maybe I can make it as a spotter after all! Re: (313) set times (was Vestax or Technics)
So, what's up in your neck of the woods - how many places have the standard guard that you can rely on without the extra guest DJ? every night they present? In Glasgow, I think some of the longest-running, most established nights are down to the resident DJs far more than any guests that may get booked. Slam's events have become an institution thanks to Stuart and Orde over the years - although having said that, their current nights such as Pressure tend to rely heavily on big line-ups of huge DJs. The Sub Club's Saturday nights have been going for many years with residents Harri and Domenic playing all night, week in week out - they do have occasional guests (Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Fabrice Lig to name a few this year) but the night is really built around the residents. And my mates at Traxx have also been doing packed nights at the Soundhaus for many years with no 'name' guests, just the core team of Laurence Hughes, Simon Cordiner and Andy Pirie playing all night long. There are plenty of others up here too, I've just focused on three that stood out. In my experience having great resident DJs is the fundamental key to having a successful and long-running club night - if the crowd are coming to see them first and foremost, it also gives the club a lot more room to manoeuvre and allows them to book slightly more esoteric or lesser-known guests... As funny and ridiculous as my statement must seem, people would have not made statements like you must play records at normal tempo back in the early to mid '90s when minimal techno was all the rage. Now even Jeff Mills is mellowed out and mid tempo, trends change and a lot of times people here reflect the latest trends like the popularity KDJ and 'soulful house' ect.. on 7/28/03 3:57 PM, Matthew MacQueen at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: To be fair, this is a statement that it's trendy now to play records at normal tempo and house music is more trendy than techno at least on this mailing list. Irrelevant to my point. What I observed is your trend vigilance and I perceive it as a waste of time and has nothing to do with most people like or play. I think the only person so concerned with the trends is music is you, so you can discredit them as soon as they emerge. Music changes over time, thank god, it's fluid. There will never be another KDJ I can't kick this feeling just like there will never be another SEAWOLF and there are great reasons why both of them were made, and there's equally great reasons why people have moved on and those records should never be made again. Your trendspotting is getting trendy, not to mention tedious. Just observe that trend if you will please... and please stop casting yourself as a rebel, it just reads as ignorance. But there is a difference between being trendy and having your tastes develop along side a developing trend (or shall I say continuum) in music style. sh*t if we didn't develop and move along we'd all be discussing the latest tunes sung on Sesame Street. like I've said before - things change Steve - WAKE UP! it ain't 1991 anymore. I could have sworn you said at one point you were into minimal techno because it was future music - well, follow along (and I do mean follow) MEK spw [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: Matthew MacQueen gy.net [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org cc: 07/28/03 04:02 PMSubject: Re: (313) Vestax or Technics As funny and ridiculous as my statement must seem, people would have not made statements like you must play records at normal tempo back in the early to mid '90s when minimal techno was all the rage. (313) KDJ recommendations?
hello, I've been curious about his music for a while. I recently picked up the new album and also Silentintroduction, but what I'm really wondering is which songs exactly are people refering to when they are comparing similarities to him and either Prince or Marvin Gaye? thanks! I think people generally mention Prince or Marvin Gaye in the context of KDJ sampling them, rather than actually sounding like them himself... Cheers, Tom

I know your jsut trying to educate people but that's so typical why not more minmal techno and early '90s techno? Music changes over time, thank god, it's fluid. everything does not change for the better you could say the same for trends. I never stated all new music is bad. There will never be another KDJ I can't kick this feeling just like there will never be another SEAWOLF and there are great reasons why both of them were made, and there's equally great reasons why people have moved on and those records should never be made again. I disagree, there's always room for improvement especially if you have a formula that works. Look at all the Detroit labels trying to sound like the '80s with electro. Your trendspotting is getting trendy, not to mention tedious. Just observe that trend if you will please... and please stop casting yourself as a rebel, it just reads as ignorance. And making such comments about pitch is not considering this is the 313 list? I'm just telling it like I see it.

So, what's up in your neck of the woods - how many places have the standard guard that you can rely on without the extra guest DJ? every night they present? I find that most residencies here are on non-Friday, non-Saturday nights or smaller clubs. On the weekends people go out for names mostly, and I think it's getting harder to maintain a week-in, week-out following in a really active scene. I don't think this is necessarilly a bad thing, as what you lose in consistency you gain in diversity. People are too well informed now to do the same thing every week, and information is easy to come by, what with the inter-net and all. I think a lot of this is regionalized though. Most of the weekend club nights in DC had residents when I lived there. Tristan === Text/Mixes/Pics: http://www.phonopsia.co.uk Music: http://www.mp313.com Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
