If you don't mind heading down the I-95 a bit, you could do much worse than Sam
'The Man' Burns tonight. He's got as much experience as the Shelter guys and in
my experience is every bit as good. In the area you're basically looking at
that east coast vibe with the exception of Brett Dancer though. Unless things
have changed drastically in the last couple of years.

http://www.dcsanctuary.com/mambo/index.php

I think you'd really dig the vibe in this place as well. The best in the
Balto/DC area in my experience, and where Brett Dancer does his thing.

Also, I never made it here myself, but it seems to be one of the better places
in the area: http://www.sonarlounge.com. Chris Udoh on Saturday.

Another option in D.C. is http://www.groovedistrict.com/, which is more on the
broken beat tip. John Johnson's good though. That's likely where I'd be.

Yet another option in D.C. is http://www.blueroomdc.com/. El Hombre Pintado and
Ivan on Satrudays are two guys that used to work at the studio with me. Good
house stuffs and rare groove with a slightly less east cost focus than some of
their peers.

basically I went out in D.C. a lot more than Balto even when I lived in Balto.
Also, you might find some more leads here: http://www.pojirecords.com but I
need to get some work done. G'luck!

Oh, and if you get to the area and find Darrow on any lineups, go check him
above and beyond anyone else. His mixes may be an indication of his flavour.
He's dope and might provide some more Detroitish vibes. http://www.myterra.org.
Maybe email him from the site for suggestions as well. Tell him I sent you but
if you meet him try not to be such a surly bastard. ;)

Well, I can still look up the name, so it's not a DNS problem. Whois at
internic shows everything in order. Other sites in their netblock are OK
(cdbaby.com for example). My guesses are:
1.) Servers are off-line for a move of some sort to a different
facility.
Or the colocation place went out of business and shipped everyone's
servers

back to them. This has happened to a few of my favorite sites recently.
2.) Discogs didn't pay the bandwidth bill and now they don't exist.

Hello

Just a quick one to say that I've sorted out a few extra guestlist places for
our party tomorrow night. Drop me a line if you're interested and I'll
distribute them on a first come first served basis.

In case you're wondering (understandably perhaps) which party I'm referring to,
we're getting our sound system out for some reggae action tomorrow night at
Bardens Boudoir in Stoke Newington.
Details can be found on the website: http://www.ialityhifi.co.uk

Yep, I never fell out of love with it either. Bring back the hardware UR
(please)!

As for the 7s, it does seem like a peculiar strategy to me, but I don't
find it annoying as such. I've bought only one so far: the Tobacco Ties
7.

Releasing a 7 before a 12 could either limit or increase risk/expense
(and cut margins). Hard to say if you don't know what the model is,
although it must be tight.

I don't even know if 7s which are products in themselves (i.e., not
promos) would work out cheaper to produce. Just because you're using
less plastic, it doesn't work that way!

Remote 12 and Made LP both on Meanwhile are very very good. The Remote 12 is
ambienty house (more Dave Angel than The Orb though) and the Made LP simply has
anything that anyone could want in an album of electronica, hip hop techno,
electro, bangers, it's all there

(I'm not on comission for any of these releases btw)

Anyone else heard anything good recently?

Re: (313) UR 7 s

2005-07-01 Thread ddonohue
Perhaps that is no real reason! Perhaps someone woke up and said, man,
I love 7s, even though they are quirky as hell. I'm gonna make a grip of
them. Or. maybe it's for playing doubles, to have a bit of a different
mix. It's cheaper than buying 2 x 12s.

Whoever said they wonder about the business model for the 7s might just
be thinking too much. I doubt it gets that deep, really. It's just a
bunch of wonderful grassroots-style artists doing whatever they want... I
prefer it like that!

Myself, I have about 5-6 of them. Some I couldn't live without, some get
lost and never found. THe Los Hermanos 7 with Resurrection on it, is
briliant!

Why are they doing this, i know its cheaper, but i they then produce a 12

Just the online clips, but that is good enough to get me to purchase. I
may hold out for a 12. On a side note, does anyone else find the LH
releases to be one-sided? I think that every single one has a blistering
side, and a more to be desired side. I'm not really disappointed at
all, because the good side is better than most of the other things out
there, but it seems a bit different than the UR records I've been buying
for years. Anyone disagree?

I've been mucking about with a thing called 'Furious Styles' by Ludvig
Elblaus (New Speak) for a month or so.

Seeing as discogs is down, give this boomkat page a hit:

You can listen to some of it too.

For anyone who needs me to, I'll be reviewing it elsewhere.

Not really recently, but I just finally picked up two tracks that I had a
hard time getting a hold of:

The Plan - Plan A

D1aspora - David Donohue Ri/Banrion
http://www.submerge.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODProduct_Code=D1AS003Category_Code=D1aspora

Both of these are harder styled Detroit tracks, that REALLY move! It's
just perfect for how I feel lately. The David Donohoe is simply amazing
on the A side. The clips just don't do it justice, it's a full play
heart-winner...

for years. Anyone disagree?

actually i REALLY love the b side of quetzal entitled tescat.
its kind of a banger for them, kinda loopy and dark. but then 2/3
of the way in the strings hit and its pure beauty in the middle of
the storm. i wish i played harder stuff so i could actually fit
that track in a set somehow.

Anyone bother to see if they can ID the records that Kenny Larkin is
flipping through on the Movement DVD?

I only saw one that I could ID -

there was one that looks like it has a mason jar on the cover?

PS - My wife and I are visible in the crowd during some the Juan Atkin's DJ

Releasing a 7 before a 12 could either limit or increase risk/expense
(and cut margins). Hard to say if you don't know what the model is,
although it must be tight.

one thing to consider is that UR (as well as alot of other detroit
labels) have a big japanese fan base. those guys are very
passionate about their loves, im sure they buy things up there
that the rest of the world doesnt. either which way, they must be
doing alright monetarily since they keep putting them out. its
been a couple years now...

I don't even know if 7s which are products in themselves (i.e., not
promos) would work out cheaper to produce. Just because you're using
less plastic, it doesn't work that way!

7s are far far cheaper to put out than a 12.

It's a bunch of numerological rubbish about 2 and 3 adding up to five and the
mystical properties of five-sided objects, etc (rubbish b/c you'll see what you
look for)... or not, depending on who you ask. People have spent a considerable
amount of time coming up with this stuff though, I will definitely give them
that.

This is the top result on Google for 'meaning of 23':
http://www.free.de/homes/joern/23.html

Jordan and Beckham do present a strong case as well. :)

Aso, it was the 23rd anniversary of the release of Shari Vari last year, and
2004 was a very good year for techno. Umm... I think I just convinced myself!
:)

I suppose I should read more Alister Crowley before I completely poop on this
stuff though. I could be missing out on untold power. It's kind of like John
Stuart Mill's argument for Christianity. Ascent to the religion that offers the
greatest reward, b/c if it happens to be right, you're minted. That's a
philosophy I can get wit.

Oh, and I have four good friends that were born on April 23.

First a view of 600milliseconds (approx. 3.33 into the track) with the
drop-out(s) right in the middle:
http://images5.fotopic.net/?iid=yafejsoutx=600noresize=1nostamp=1

If we zoom in and watch 300ms, we can see more clearly that they're actually
three drop-outs:
http://images2.fotopic.net/?iid=yafej8outx=600noresize=1nostamp=1

Here's 100ms, the first and last drop-outs are about 8-9ms each long, while the
middle one is about 17ms:
