2006-03-23 Thread Andrew Duke Cognition Audioworks

The mnml.nl forum came up with the idea to do a production contest using
solely royalty-free samples created by lil' me--nothing else--to make a
song.

The results are now in; a variety of styles (all techno-ey), all
top-quality:

original thread with the samples and submissions as they came in:
http://www.mnml.nl/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6802

page with the results listed individually in hi and lo fi mp3 format:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=507522

podcast incorporating all of the results in a super tight mix:

Hi, Joe. You can still download the samples via the original

results. The DJ mix with the results is really sweet.

I challenge you to not use anything other than those samples. There are
percussive loops in
those zips, so if you wanted some individual drum hits, you could snatch

Eh, I'm just really picky about drum sounds (I dig through crates for
like months with tracks on hold for a single drum hit sometimes,
seriously) so I've never participated in one of these where the drums
were to my liking. Especially if it's in mp3 format (haven't checked the
file yet btw) I just won't use drums that have been compressed that far
cough freq range cough. Totally ruins them for me. They don't have
the weight to support the rest of the sounds/structure comfortably I've
found. they just got no fxcking balls. But sure...okay. Maybe I'll do

If you don't go see the Artist Formerly Known As Donna Summer, AKA
Jason Forrest, and Duran Duran Duran, well I'm taking away your

citizens, they dropped the bomb, and then they did it all over again.

Duran Duran Duran proved once again that breakcore is the vanguard of
creativity in electronic music right now. He started off hard and
manic, where less fearless musicians might hold back something to
build up to, but then he just kept piling on the breaks, getting more
intense.

Jason -- well, if you want to know how you can play a laptop set that
actually engages and amuses and rocks, I've got two words for you: air
guitar. Well, and two more words: iBook Cozy. His M.O. is to pick
apart hoary 70s prog and rock classics, then reassemble them with all
the parts that RAWK piled together. I heard Blood Sweat and Tears,
the Beatles, J Geils Band, and many, many more go into his cuisinart
and come out as a million thrashy pieces.

And the new Cock Rock Disco CDs and records are sweet. And much
respect for putting together a tour of all those towns the hipster
acts ignore. Des Moines? Buffalo? Lansing? F*CK YEAH.

Shut your festering gob, you tit! -- Monty Python

I posted that review-let to 313 because they're going to be playing in
Detroit in a couple of days, and Cock Rock Disco is very compatible
with the esteemed output of Detroit Underground. If all Jason did was
speed up a beatles track and put some breaks over it no, that
wouldn't be creative, but it's all about him repurposing individual
gestures from other records in service of his own particular notion of
fun. We're not talking Will Smith here -- Jason Forrest's stuff is
banging good fun.

Like George Michael said -- listen without prejudice. What's
brilliant about Jason's stuff is that in anyone else's hands, what he
does would sound crap. If you want a more serious consideration of
his take on sample appropriation here it is: Jason's aesthetic eschews
irony - anything he samples, he samples out of a genuine love for the
source material, and he respects it enough to avoid the Will Smith
impulse. He's not borrowing hooks, he's repurposing individual hits
and flourishes to make a hyped up, cartoonish, maximalist bricolage.
Then, to sell it to the audience, he makes a complete ass of himself
onstage.

It might not be to everyone's taste, for sure. But last night's sets
passed the most important test: they had everyone dancing, clapping
and yelling and acting like fools, and the ladies got freaky. It was
big fun.

Yo I went to see him perform with his new artist tamar last Thursday
and got a sweet surprise. I was ten feet from the stage so I had a great
view of the show. Tamar was awesome. She did a ton of covers of old
classics that only real full throated SINGERS (as opposed to mere
performers) can pull off right. Some in attendance felt she was trying a
bit too hard, but then you would too if this was your proving ground and
your mentor was prince. Then she left the stage to get changed and
prince let us in on one of the classic tunes he swore last year he
wouldn't do ever again. The venue was pretty intimate compared to the
stadium's he's played, so when he asked how many of his music club
members were in attendance, I'm sure he really felt overwhelmed when
more than 3/4 of the audience raised their hands. He was visibly moved
by the display (lasted a couple minutes)and he proceeded to tell us, I
know I said I wouldn't, but this is gonna be between me and Atlanta.
Nobody's got to know about this. Then he proceeded to kick into purple
rain. He did a bunch of his classic material and was so on form it was
frightening. He is a guitar god. I was supposed to hook up with three
other friends and the next day they both said they came in looking for
friends and before they could find us prince had them spellbound and
they forgot until after. Fxcking life changing. They rocked from midnite
till almost three am. No other performers at all. Oh yeah, he did
Michael jackson's shake your body down to the ground. THEN he says,
you can't do the brother without the sister and he goes into janet
jackson's what have you done for me lately?. Dope. Overall he seemed
to be really feeling the classic funk/soul sound more than anything and
if the direction he's pushing his new artist in is any indication, he's
got it together and is just playing his cards as he always has...his

Oh, man, Prince live - nothing like it. Amazing everything - guitar
wizard.
Great entertainer, humorous, dancer, makes you feel like he's playing for a
small group of friends when there's a thousand people in the audience.
Hope he's doing some more shows in Mpls again and this time I'll get the
time off work to go the PP all-nighters.

Those were my first impressions of his CD - really love those tracks I
mentioned.
I just find the production far too slick on most of the other tracks. Will
keep spinning it in the player because it might be one of those growers.
Would love to hear these tracks performed live as there is always that gap
between live and CD. Live performances can bring out things that just
don't come across on CD. Especially with Prince.

if the direction he's pushing his new artist in is any indication, he's
got it together and is just playing his cards as he always has...his
way.

Unless U get evicted ;-)

Listening to the CD right now - first impressions

like:

Black Sweat - could see Shake destroy a dancefloor with this
Love - although it reminds me too much of Glamorous Life at times
Beautiful, Loved and Blessed

the rest is filler

It's not even close to a return to his creative height (Controversy,

CITY OF DETROIT AND PAXAHAU SHAKE HANDS,
ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL WILL GO ON.

DETROIT- Paxahau Promotions Group today announced they have been chosen by
the City of Detroit to be the producers of this year¹s Electronic Music
Festival on Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-29.

³We are sincerely honored that the City has selected someone within the
electronic community to produce this event - we have worked extremely hard
to establish ourselves as a globally respected organization, specifically to
bring this event the cultural attention it deserves², said Jason Huvaere,
owner of Paxahau.

³Paxahau presented a sound plan to stabilize and grow the event,² said
Lucius A. Vassar, the City of Detroit¹s Chief Administrative Officer. ³We
want to see this event flourish and continue to draw people from all over
the world to Detroit.²

Since 1998 Paxahau has produced Electronic events in Detroit. In that time
they have grown to include a record label, booking agency, web-archive and
event production company which hosts an average of 20 events a year in the
city.

The festival producers have also been endorsed by previous festival
directors, Carl Craig, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson.

³As the festival¹s 2003 and 2004 producers, we are pleased to see that
Paxahau will be taking on the event,² said electronic music pioneer Derrick
May. ³Jason Huvaere and his group are not only competent event managers, but
they are of the electronic music industry. I am confident that in their
hands, the event¹s integrity as the world¹s signature electronic music
festival will be preserved, and its operations and management strengthened.

In an effort to maintain a globally recognized, positive brand image for
Detroit, Paxahau will retain the name ³Movement, Detroit¹s Electronic Music

celebrates not only to sonic art forms associated with Electronic Music, but
also the visual arts culture that has evolved from its influences as well.

³We see the festival as an opportunity to bring Detroit¹s influence all over

Detroit expected to announce today new producers for annual techno
festival

Adam Graham / The Detroit News

Detroit city officials are expected to announce later today that
the reins for this year's Memorial Day techno festival have been
handed to Ferndale-based electronic music event promoter Paxahau.

Jason Huvaere, Paxahau's 32-year-old director of operations,
boarded a plane early today bound for Miami's five-day Winter
Music Conference, electronic music's biggest annual gathering,
where he is expected to begin promoting the event.

Huvaere said in order to properly market the event, it was
critical to promote it at the Conference, which is attended by DJs
and electronic music fans from around the globe.

Promotion time for the festival has been in short supply in recent
years. Last year's techno team, headed up by Detroit techno
pioneer Kevin Saunderson, was given the green light to produce the
festival in early May, giving them less than four weeks to
announce the lineup and hype the event to out-of-town visitors.

The Memorial Day techno fest has become a Hart Plaza tradition
since its first outing in 2000.

But just as the festival has been marked by pulsating rhythms and
candy ravers, it has also been met, year in and year out, with
drama and backstage squabbling.

Today will mark the third time the festival has changed hands.
Carol Marvin and Pop Culture Media produced the first three
Detroit Electronic Music Festivals. Detroit techno pioneer Derrick
May took over in 2003 and 2004, while fellow techno visionary
Saunderson produced the festival in 2005.

Saunderson, who still owes $250,000 in unpaid bills to vendors and
to the city of Detroit from last year's festival, announced last
month he would not return to produce this year's event.
