I'm sure the Detroit purists won't agree, but if for some reason this festival congeals as the US's (other) large electronic music festival (besides WMC), I don't think it's a bad thing at all. I'm still scarred from the late 80s/90s when there was such strong animosity toward any kind of dance music. So getting Myspace sized visibility and year after year momentum can only be seen by me as a positive, as long as it doesn't completely betray its roots. And If I were to be completely pessimistic and assume that in 5 years whatever the festival evolves into only maintains 25% detroit musical presence, that would still be so insanely out of line with the greater dance/festival culture that I'd call it a success. - Original Message From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2008 8:21:28 PM Subject: (313) Movement Update (Redbull, Myspace and Dieselboy) discuss: Detroit - May 24, 25 and 26th will bring Detroit alive with sounds from Movement 08: Detroit?s Electronic Music Festival in Hart Plaza with the Red Bull Music Academy, MySpace promotion and a higher level of production. RE: (313) Movement Update (Redbull, Myspace and Dieselboy)
Virtually any festival of any note in the last few years has grown in this manner. The first few line-ups are always amazing, and then as it grows, costs escalate and other factors concerning the future viability of the project become prominent, and as such other, more commercial aspects get involved. It's also difficult to try to downscale such a project once it gets to a certain size. I think what Gil says has some pertinence - Miami is the only American electronic music festival of any note and that's got unfortunate associations. At least having something in Detroit is a worthwhile start. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 28 March 2008 14:20 To: Gil Yaker Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Movement Update (Redbull, Myspace and Dieselboy) Five years? Well with that announcement, it shows that perhaps they haven't completely gone to the darkside. So I'll wait and see if the yet to be announced additions make up for some of the wackness presented here and on the rest of the announced line-up. Now I know there's a large contingent that see most of this discussion asmindless bickering, and sometimes it is, but the bickering more often than not has good intentions. At this stage in the game we all expect more, so pardon me for having standards. jw On Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 8:21 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: discuss: Detroit - May 24, 25 and 26th will bring Detroit alive with sounds from Movement 08: Detroit?s Electronic Music Festival in Hart Plaza with the Red Bull Music Academy, MySpace promotion and a higher level of production. RE: (313) Movement Update (Redbull, Myspace and Dieselboy)
You're not taking into account the commercial viability of this. In Europe we're lucky because a lot of festivals have considerable funding from various councils and organisations in order to get them to go ahead. The only festival I can think of that that doesn't really run according to commercial foibles is Montreux, and that's been backed from the start by rich philanthropy. Although I've not been, I don't think that is the case in Detroit. It has to be commercially viable in order to succeed in the future. Now, it may be that in say, 5 or 6 years time, the festival may be successful enough nationwide for them to realise their dreams of putting on at least in part the festival that everyone on 313 wants it to be. You may have to be patient for it to happen I'm afraid. They either put on a festival that no-one turns up to and they lose all their money on, or they pocket enough money to be able to do it next year. The fact that Paxahau are doing it I think means that those guys I'm sure will be carrying the flame for Detroit Techno all along, but it'll take time. Landscapes and crowds change - and mindsets have to as well. -Original Message- From: Thomas D. In Europe we're lucky because a lot of festivals have considerable funding from various councils and organisations in order to get them to go ahead. The only festival I can think of that that doesn't really run ' according to commercial foibles is Montreux, and that's been backed from the start by rich philanthropy. see, i think this is the problem. everyone got dollar signs in their eyes due to the unexpectedly large crowds that had wildly incorrect estimates in the early years. then when they started charging and keeping the entrances gated, it became obvious that these numbers were not right. instead of scaling back to something that could be done to serve all groups of people who had been actually attending the festival (let's break it down into say the international techno crowd, ravers, and locals who might not have known much if anything about the music but came through to have a good time) and who would be likely to continue to support it, they decided to go the megarave route. now they are pushing out the other groups of people (international presence definitely seems way way way down in the past couple of years likely due to the type of lineups, the locals mostly got out when the festival got crazily expensive) at the expense of the groups LEAST likely to continue to support the festival on a regular basis: the transient fickle raver crowd. Although I've not been, I don't think that is the case in Detroit. It has to be commercially viable in order to succeed in the future. Now, it may be that in say, 5 or 6 years time, the ' festival may be successful enough nationwide for them to realise their dreams of putting on at least in part the festival that everyone on 313 wants it to be. You may have to be patient for it to happen I'm afraid. They either put on a festival that no-one turns up to and they lose all their money on, or they pocket enough money to be able to do it next year. why be patient for something that already happened to happen again? if you think this is the future of where this festival is going, i think you are sorely mistaken. the goodness of the festival already happened, and a large part of what made it so interesting has been banished. and then suddenly in 5 or 6 years when DEMF is trying to straight up compete with WMC (which is stupid anyway, why would someone go to detroit when they could go to florida instead?) why would they switch back? it doesnt make sense. this is not the route to take in order for the festival to be what it should be and has been. The fact that Paxahau are doing it I think means that those guys I'm sure will be carrying the flame for Detroit Techno all along, but it'll take time. Re: (313) re: Kwame OT
Hey Robin, I'd have to disagree with you on that. I spent 3 years in Liverpool, just moving back to Detroit 9 months ago, and the two cities have a lot of similarities even today, actually, especially today. The growth occurring in Detroit is symbolically similar to the growth occurring in Liverpool. Growth being stimulated by funding of the arts and social programs. Hundreds of millions of dollars being invested into Detroit through the Skillman foundation and the Bank of America. Hundreds of millions of pounds being invested by the EU Capital of Culture. Anyone here agree with me? Hmmm I'm not sure Detroit is like either now. I think mid 80s Liverpool/Manchester/Sheffield share a lot in common with present day Detroit in terms of the dereliction of ex-industrial areas, abandonment of buildings and maybe even in the feeling of despair. Things have changed in the UK now though so the comparison is less valid these days. btw. to keep this on topic: One of the reasons Detroit music has been popular in the above northern UK cities (even going back to northern soul days) is because of the fact that they have industrial pasts. There's also massive differences too so I'm not saying the comparison really holds. robin...

Forgive me if i got you wrong. But, faint or not, it's an opinion, founded on listening, on objective and subjective points. Just the Hackney Centralist EP is enough to support what i think about Bass Clef, altough there are many others great producers in this scene, like Shackleton, Atki2, Disrupt, Kode9 and the DMZ crew, just to name a few. Well, I'm from Liverpool. I've been in Mcr 10 years and spent 5 years in Sheffield and Leeds. I've only been to Detroit once though so can't claim to have seen it all. The pure neglect and dereliction has gone from a lot of the northern Uk cities now but 80s/90s Sheffield I felt was the most like the D I saw. (313) Moodymann - the OC (was: venting)
ok my turn heard the very short clips over at Sounds of the Universe (http://www.soundsoftheuniverse.com/releases/?id=11456) and i very much like what i heard. Forgive me as i haven't been following Moodymann lately, I thought he was either getting to housey or formulaic for my tastes, but has he been on some sort of new tip? or is the clip too short and the tracks develop differently? Here the blurb says Kenny Dixon Jr keeps on developing his signature sound in unexpected new directions and this single represents another exciting step forward! From what i hear it seems he has been making stripped down dirty techno (God forbid i say the word minimal) and the last track sounds almost krunk. are there any other recent releases in the same vein i should be aware about? sounds very nice. fab

In the actual drum n' bass scene, i totally agree with you. But in dubstep, if you listen closely, putting the formulaic parachuters aside, you'll find influences of dub (of course) techno, oriental progressions, jazz, soul, various types of tribal percussions, dancehall and hip-hop. If what you're really saying is that the majority of style followers take influences only of that style itself, i agree. It happens in all styles, including techno and house. Due to their popularization as club music, the number of generic, functional and unexpressive tunes we can find, comming from techno and house areas, are like the number of grains of sand in a beach. Altough my english is lame, i learn something translating all kinds of songs when i was a kid. And after that, watching american and english movies. Believe me: trying to figure out what was being said in hip-hop lyrics helped a lot! :) Knowing a little bit of latin kinda help me in both latin and non- latin languages. There's latin radicals in portuguese, french, italian, spanish and in english and german too. Like mater, pater, omnibus... In fact, portuguese is a very intricated language, with complicated syntaxes between terms, large number of verbal conjugations. English seems to be much more practical, uncomplicated, openning other interesting ports for expression. To my ears, portuguese and dutch, sometimes, sound almost the same, in terms of rhythm and melody. I was really amazed with that when i was in amsterdan. It was like a very familiar spoken sound, but i couldn't understand sh*t! Besides some words like straat, centraal, gratis and others. Man... i've just rediscovered an Airto's record in my crates that i'm love with: Virgin Land. Recorded in the US. He's amazing, don't you think? Milton is great as well. Maybe one of the greatest brazilian composers that begun in the 60s. You should listen to the Clube da Esquina (something like Corner Club) volumes 1 and 2. Black Rio was a great band. If you want to dig more in the brazilian funk/jazz funk business, i recomend Moacir Santos. Specially the Coisas (Things) album. Thanks for the nice words, Kent. Re: (313) what's in a name (was:venting/Something Simple, Miami)
Techno is one among many influences in the dubstep sound. I would not call the influence of techno second hand. Well it's an influence, not a copy/paste thing. Influences are not supposed to be identical, mimetic. Are supposed to be filtered, processed, and, sometimes, yes, distorted. I don't really know what techno should be. I know something concerning to what techno was, and is. Because it's surely more than i know of it. I don't know if dubstep producers get their techno flavour from american or european techno. Probabaly from the european (minimal?) techno and from the uk hardcore techno and rave culture passing on seamlessly over and over. I don't think they took influences directly from the roots of detroit techno - most of these producers are kids. But the techno flavour is there, anyway. Blended in a dub modus operandi. Just listen to Geiom's Overnight Biscuits or to Digital Mysticz's Neverland. Kw On 28/03/2008, at 22:21, Thomas D. Re: (313) what's in a name (was:venting/Something Simple, Miami)
We often can see producers, moved by trendy approaches, do bad music. This same trendy superficiality often results in choosing trendy names. But it's not always true. It's just common. We have great wonderful records in not very well done or graphically interesting covers. Sometimes because the artist really don't care about it. It turns to be a secondary thing. Ok. A good artist may imprint the same capabilities that makes him do good music in the making of a graphically interesting cover, or in choosing a non-stupid-trendy pseudonym. As i said, after agreeing with you, sometimes. Kw On 29/03/2008, at 00:36, /0 wrote: ok, I take back ridiculous and apologize. (313) More and More Wild Kingdom...
Last week's Wild Kingdom playlist is at http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=29886 . A nasty Easter evening acid/minimal hour's interlude can be found at http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=29892 . This week's set features nuggets from Basic Channel, Wolfgang Voigt in various guises, Jeff Mills, Urban Electro, Isolee, Heath Brunner, Orbital, Forever Sweet, and loads more. Check the event calendar at KFJC for upcoming specials during the month of May. I'm doing a special on bands/tracks with synth names (remember?), and a 3-part Acid special. The Wild Kingdom airs on KFJC-FM 89.7, Saturday night/Sunday Morning, 12A-3A (7A-10A GMT). The webcast is at www.kfjc.org (follow the links). Present and past Wild Kingdom playlists are also archived there. You can also check out archived playlists from my first KFJC show Just Desserts that aired on Fridays 10P-2A from 1992 through 1999. Archived playlists exist for that show starting from Fall 1995 to New Year's Eve 1999/2000. If you do tune in (especially via the web), please take a little time to let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promo music from all over and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events. If you want to do some fairly serious promotion, contact the KFJC promotions department at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to arrange ticket giveaways and/or to send information for inclusion in our concert outlook. Thanks to those who have sent promo music so far. Regards, Richard Hester Mr. Goodwrench The Wild Kingdom SU 12A-3A KFJC-FM 89.7, Los Altos Hills, California
