(313) Love did save the day

2008-02-18 Thread Adam Smith
I had the fortunate opportunity and pleasure to attend David Mancuso's
Loft Party here in NYC last night. I gotta say it was something
special, and it felt like I was part of something that mattered. The
crowd was absolutely lovely, and eclectic to say the least: children,
old people, hippies, funky people, faces of all colors, it was
beautiful. Everyone came here with the intention of simply having a
good time and dancing to great music. And the music, wow. David
Mancuso played awesome music all night, he builds his set perfectly
and plays every record from beginning to end. People would clap
between songs and after a while you did not even notice that he wasn't
mixing songs together. It flowed so perfectly. I recognized a
handful of tunes, some sounded familiar but I could not identify them,
others I had never heard and the older Puerto Rican guy next to me was
singing the lyrics at the top of his lungs. And the sound was perfect.
The sound system was so clear, every record sounded absolutely
fantastic. It was not too loud, you could have a conversation without
yelling, but if you moved to the center of the dance floor, you truly
felt surrounded by the music. Ame's Rej sounded brilliant. For the
most part I would say he played soulful disco, but he would play some
cool, dark minimal track then drop some funky jam and the place would
just erupt. As an example, after Rej he played Nick Straker's 'A
Little Bit of Jazz' and everyone just ate it up. The first balloon
drop occurred around 10:30 or so and I did not realize just how much
people like to smack balloons around. Everyone in the place had a
smile on their face and was getting down, as it should be.

Anyway, I wanted to share my excitement and experience. If you ever
have the chance to go, do not miss. Worth every penny, and you still
get a full night's sleep after.

There is a mention of Ron Murphy's passing on Urb's blog, which was

Not much new information, but there is a photograph of the man at work.

This is my recollection of Ron's story: He had been fooling with the
lathe and figured out how to stop the screw action that pushes the
cutting head from the outside to the inside of the platter. Then
cutting a locked groove is a matter of tuning the source matterial to
exactly 133 1/3 bpm, dropping the cutting head in the groove and
lifting it up again after exactly one rotation.

Jeff came in to cut The Rings Of Saturn and as was Ron's method, he
set up the cutter with a scratch lacquer, to cut part of a track in
order to see how it sounds played back. Without telling Jeff, Ron cut
a lock groove out of one of the tracks and put it on the turntable
while Jeff wasn't paying close attention. The loop played for a
minute or so before Jeff's eyes got big, and he said wh wh what the
hell Ron? H H H How did you do that?! It's funnier if A) you've
heard Jeff talk and B) you hear it from Ron, imitating Jeff.

Now the fact is that locked grooves weren't a Ron Murphy invention --
every run-out groove is a lock groove, and the Beatle's Sargeant
Pepper has a lock groove cut in the run-out groove of the first
English pressing. But it may be true that Ron started it in the realm
 of dance records.

Anyway, that's my recollection of Ron's story. He definitely had a
million of them, especially about the competetiveness of the early
Detroit artists. The fact is this, though: In the late 80s, getting
your own lacquers cut and plated, and then pressed locally, was a
completely new phenomenon. Ron Murphy was there in Detroit, and his
help and encouragement with young artists making their first records
was a big part of the development of the techno scene.

His experience, going back to the Motown 60s was important as well. He
was the uninterrupted institutional memory of Detroit as a center of
unique musical creativity. There are plenty of people who can cut
records, but absolutely no one that cut all the records that Ron cut.

was there for a bout an hour and a half, and I picked up the following
goodies (could've bought a whole lot more):

CC - Paris Live - Planet e
V/A - Underground Anthems ep - Sistrum
Convextion - Romantic Interface - AW
Ugly Edits 07/Ugly Edits 08
RS - Mango Walk
Jimmy Ross - First True Love Affair
Thom Yorke - The Eraser (Slow to Speak remix)
Larry Levan - Larry 09 (Slow to Speak edits)

And that's just the tip of the iceberg at this shop...seriously good
selection. I flipped through plenty of tunes I wanted to check out,
just didn't have the time today. One of the guys from Slow to Speak

Re: (313) since I won't be at DEMF

2007-05-25 Thread Adam Smith

I had the cab ride of my life in Detroit during the DEMF one year, I
will never forget it and I am just glad that I was with friends to
prove that it actually happened.

After standing in line for well over an hour trying to get into the
Transmat after-party we gave up and opted to go to another party
somewhere on the outskirts of town, I believe Stacey Pullen and Alton
Miller were to play. We hailed a cab and told the guy where we wanted
to go. He looked back at us and said, there ain't no f'n way I'm
takin two white boys out there at this time of the night!

Based on his recommendation we decided to call it a night. On our way
back to the hotel, the cab driver started telling us a story about how
he and his buddy had this scheme once where they would meet up with
some ladies (I'll use ladies in lieu of his preferred word), take them
out, get them smashed, then go to the hotel. Well apparently he and
his buddy liked to shave their heads and switch it up in the middle of
the night for their unsuspecting ladies. It seems that if the ladies
were smashed enough, and the lights were low enough, this was an
excellent way to try all offerings at the buffet.

Well, as he was wrapping up his very animated story, this car comes
out of nowhere driving insanely fast, passing us like we were sitting
still. Oh sh#t! our cab driver exclaims, it's a f$ckin police
chase. And it was, a police car comes flying by us immediately after
the first car. So the cab driver speeds up to keep up with the action.
The police car catches up with the first car and pulls it over
quickly, cops get out, etc...our wise cab driver knowingly states
about the car that got busted, where the f$ck he gonna go in this
city? as we pass by the scene.

After we pass that scene, we come to a red light and pull up next to
this Lexus SUV that has a serious entertainment system set up inside
his vehicle. Our Dalai Lama like- cab driver, in his infinite wisdom,
observes, now how a motherf$cker gonna have 5 TV's and no ladies
(using my alternate word here again)? We pondered his rhetorical
question.

At that point, we finally made it to our hotel, where we paid and had
to say goodbye to our cab driver. I had to ask my buddies if that
really just happened. It did.

Casino - are there many less obvious nights happening as well?
In fact, what's happening in the French scene generally at the moment,
anything secret and interesting we don't hear about?!

I remember Laurent performed at a party here in the wrong
neighborhood where some shadiness went down. A small crew of 'agents
of darkness' strolled in with their concealed weapons. Some gunfire
took place and maybe someone actually got shot. Fuzzy memories where
I think someone was wounded, but nothing serious.

I also remember Sonar 1999 when Rich, Jeff Mills, and Laurnet Garnier
were all riding bumper cars together--with much
 'bloodthirstiness'. That was definitely surreal.

At 10:48 AM 9/5/2006, you wrote:
Laurent Guarnier started coming to Detroit a long time ago, and is a
huge fan of detroit techno. Bone has great stories about Laurent
DJ'ing without monitors at sketchy Detroit parties back then. And as
for Aretha and Iggy, why wouldn't he know about them?

I'm from Iowa, so I don't think I can judge who's 'Detroit' enough,
any more than, say, a guy from Brazil. I do know that whether you
like Laurent's music or not -- and he's hit or miss for me -- his
hearts in the right place. Tremendously fun DJ to see, because no one
in the room is having more fun than him.

(313) Ableton DJ Mix

2006-07-18 Thread Adam Smith

Hey list,

how's it goin? So I put together my first all digital dj mix in
Ableton. It turned out pretty well, although I found it to be a
different experience than spontaneously mixing vinyl for a couple of
hours. The main difference being that it took forever, at least
compared to knocking out an hour dj mix with turntables/mixer/records.
Another difference was the editing: I found that when I revisited the
mix the next day, maybe my mood had changed and I would remove a
song, rearrange, try some other tune, etc. Typically when I mix
records, it's all about what happens at that moment, not thinking
about things too much, just grab records, put them together however
you see fit, and go with it. Perhaps I will experience more of that
down the road after I get a little faster with Ableton.

Anyway, check it out if you're interested, would love any feedback you
may have too of course!

http://www.abrooklynlife.com/2006/07/ablradio_libert.html#more

The entire tracklist is on the page above with link to download mp3 or
subscribe to the weekly podcast (although not every week is Detroit
related).

Mix includes songs by: Raiders of the Lost Arp, $tinkworx, Unit 4, Joe
Lewis, Gino Soccio, Mr. Fingers, Phuture, DJ Yoav B, David Bowie, and
a handful more.

Enjoy!

Another great source for these questions is the Ableton forum:

You won't have to join a mailing list or anything either. Just search
for keywords like evolution uc33e/protools/midi/etc and you will come
up with tons of information/opinions/debates/etc as these questions
have been asked/answered 1000's of times.

As an ableton user I can attest to it's beautifully simple and
intuitive interface. Give the demo a shot. Not only great to get
started, but it has come a long way as well, and can be used for
complete production of tracks. This, of course, would be up to you.

Good luck.

Re: (313) CD Mixers

2006-04-04 Thread Adam Smith
If one does not own a laptop that could be an extra cost to consider.

That is not the case for myself, but after staring at a computer
screen for 9 hours a day typing code, and then spending countless
hours working in ableton and surfing the web on my own time, it's nice
to not have to look at a computer screen while DJing, it's my oasis
and escape, and let's my eyes rest and ears work for a change.

I recently heard a friend of a friend dj with traktor and he still
couldn't mix :)
(nothing to do with the software mind you)

On 4/4/06, Kent Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Given what these things cost, I'm not sure why one wouldn't just get
Traktor on a laptop -- it's a much more flexible, easier to way to
 mix.

That being said, I love mixing on the old Denon DN 2000s, because they
were really simple. Find your cue point once, instead of over and over
like with records, then drop the track in and tweak tempo. I also
liked picking up the controller in one arm and tweaking with the other
hand. People would ask me what instrument I was playing.

Both Final Scratch and the fancy CD players with platters seem to me
to be trying to preserve a paradigm for mixing and beat matching
that's inappropriate to the technology. Traktor is really easy to
beat match in, even if you ignore the 'automatic' beat matching.
And if you can't give up the wikki-wikki you can get Traktor with Final
 Scratch.

Of course, for me, the idea of paying hundreds of dollars for
something that REQUIRES you to have turntables in order to mix is
kind of crazy. That only makes sense in Ubercoolische world, where
the DJ equipment is something you specify in a rider, not something
you haul up and down stairs.

Once you learn to beat match in one medium it shouldn't be that hard
to transfer the skills to a new one. IMHO.

Re: (313) 313-itunes radio content?

2006-03-14 Thread Adam Smith
it's not specifically Detroit/313 music, but Tim Sweeney always puts
together a great mix set each week. Mixes include everything from old
to modern disco, Detroit, Kompakt-ish stuff, DFA stuff, among a lot of
others, but done in a way that is cohesive and just a great enjoyable
mix. It's actually a podcast that you can subscribe to, as opposed to
a radio channel, but it may be of interest.

Check info and past shows/playlists here:

He also frequently has great guests as well.

Hope this helps,

no kidding man, $10-$14 for a single 12 record is frustrating...

i hate to say it, but i've been pricing CD mixers lately. The fact
that Warp, Kompakt, Beatport, iTunes, and now Submerge all provide
great selections of MP3's is becoming very tempting and hard to
ignore.

Of course I imagine I will continue buying vinyl, only in smaller

I am using gmail for 313 and it seems to be just fine. I set up the

Another 313 subscriber pointed out the HTML vs. Text Email issue and
that fixed the problem (which was just a fault of my own).

I guess that doesn't really help you all that much, but thought I

Good luck!

(313) Carl Craig on Beats in Space

2005-11-16 Thread Adam Smith
I can't remember if anyone here likes Carl Craig or not, but just in
case, here is a set that was aired on beats in space last night:

http://www.beatsinspace.net/main.html

While you're there, perhaps last week's show may be interesting to you
also, Darshan Jesrani from Metro Area played some records, and played
them well.

Oh yeah, Tim Sweeney, host of beats in space, is no slouch himself.
I've never heard a bad mix set on this show. He covers many genres
over many decades in the span of any one show and does it very well.

Enjoy!

Re: (313) DJ Mag Poll

2005-11-02 Thread Adam Smith
I agree whole-heartedly! The club music pumping at the clothing store
is really obnoxious, and it is a real turn-off. I did have a better
experience at a small Brooklyn furniture store the other weekend.
Walked in and they were playing Kraftwerk. I thought, I don't care
what this place sells, I'm going to look at everything in here and
enjoy my shopping experience.

(Not that this has anything to do with the DJ Mag Poll)

Adam

I find it really difficult to buy clothes or shoes these
days because the music most of these shops pump
out is utterly appalling. I wish they would at least turn
the volume down. As it is, I usually turn around and
head for the exit after about 30secs

(313) New bits...

2005-07-10 Thread Adam Smith

Picked up a few new things this weekend, may be of interest.

I went searching for the Carl Craig album, which I found, so that was
exciting. Great stuff!

I was surprised to see there was a new Aril Brikha 12 on Music Man,
called Prey For Peace. Highly recommended of course. It sounds like
you want it to. This was a nice, exciting surprise at the shop.

Recloose - Dust on Peacefrog - a little late on this one, had not
heard it at all and was unable to listen to it at the place I found
it, but Tom Cox's praises kept ringing in my head. Needless to see
was not disappointed at all, great record!

Emperor Machine - Part 1 Part 2 on DC recordings - kind of on that
spacey disco tip, Part 1 includes an Idjut Boys mix, which is
ridiculously good IMHO. Part 2 is great also, but not as strong as
Part 1. Check those if you're into that chicken lips/lindstrom vibe.

Tokyo Black Star - Psyche Dance ep - Sonar Kollective - not really
sure how to describe, I guess in that space disco realm again, but
very atmospheric and truly wonderful, kind of a subtle tune, but ears
would surely perk up if this were played.

Jesper Dahlback - Polyhouse ep - DX, I love this guy's music. One
side has wonderful piano throughout, kind of an old school house
feel, but a little tougher I guess. Probably the worst description
ever, but check it out...

I'm sure this has been mentioned here, but the new Isolee album is
great! I really dig it. I find that it is more dancefloor oriented
than his previous LP, Rest, which is just fine with me. Several great
tunes on it for sure.

Enjoy!

Adam

ps - I heard Lindstrom Prins Thomas DJ/Play Live yesterday here in
NYC and I must say it was spectacular! They played for 3 hours and
rocked it. Outside at the PS1 Moma Museum courtyard, 1000 dancing,
drunk fools grooving to the best modern disco. Highly recommended if
they're in your area, not to be missed!!

2004-07-30 Thread Adam Smith
Jesper Dahlbäck - Russian folksong

I love this guy's music, he could beat on a bucket with sticks, sell the
recording on vinyl, and I'd buy it...just can't get enough.

Just picked up:

Hugg Pepp - Bagarberta ep - Dahlback (Like I said above...)
Tread - Last Resolution - Third Ear (really nice, sort of similar to Tony
Watson's Passages on Ibadan, just not as HUGE)
Ricardo Villalobos vs. Jay Haze - Prefer Summer - Contexterrior (weird
minimal thing)
SCSI 9 - Mini - Kompakt (really beautiful detroity summer-ish music, not the
normal weird kompakt stuff, although I like that as well)
Derrick Carter - Choice, A Collection of Classics - Azuli (just catching on
to this series, I know I'm a bit late here.)

Enjoy your weekend!

Kenny Larkin - Smile (finally got this!)
Dj Ivoryman - Funky summer explosion (funk mixtape)
Jesper Dahlbäck - Russian folksong
RJD2 - Since we last spoke (this is the kind of hip hop I like)
Erykah Badu - On On (Summer in Sydney remix)
Various - I-Robots (compilation of 80's Italo electro gems)
Gerd - Arkests Blaze

Hmm .. not much of 313 related stuff there.

(Yes, I'm on summer holiday and went a bit record shopping :-))

Site has a nice interface, good listening samples, and other cool features

RE: (313) record insurance (OT)

2004-07-01 Thread Adam Smith
From what I understand they're covered by home owner's or renters insurance
policies, at least here in the states. Considered the same type personal
property as a mountain bike or television. I just added an extra $10K-20k to
my insurance policy regarding the total value of my personal property. This
is also where I find real value in having my collection listed in Discogs.
Hopefully no one ever has to experience this, but if there were a fire and
every piece of vinyl you owned went up in flames, then you have some type of
record/proof of what was lost. Of course you may not be able to recover out
of print titles, etc. but you could receive some type of financial benefit
by having insurance and a record/proof of what was lost. I am certainly no
expert on the subject though. I would highly recommend looking into it. We
work too hard to buy all these precious vinyls to have someone/thing take
them away so easily.

Speaking of, it seems like I heard Derrick Carter lost his house/record
collection to a fire a few years back. Anyone know about this or am I
dreaming this up?

I would have thought that they were covered under house insurance. Mine are.

To be honest though, unless the burglar knew a)you had a load of records and
b) knew about records themselves it's unlikely that they'd steal them
because they're bulky and heavy. It's much more likely that they'll just
nick your electrical equipment.

Hi

Do people insure their records?

If so, where? and does it cost alot?

My new house is wayyy too easy to break into for my liking, and I just know
one day I'm gonna catch some 12 yr old dangling half way outside my spare
room window with a load of records under his arm. (Probably before I get a
chance to insure them).

and, to be honest, they're about the only thing I own that is worth
anything.

That was a plus of living on the 11th floor. If some spiderman type could
climb 11 floors to get into my flat, he'd have been welcome to my chit.

any ideas?

sorry to be OT, I have no idea of who to ask though.

Thanks

RE: (313) Rane SSL

2004-06-28 Thread Adam Smith
I know nothing about this product, but we had John Tejada DJ here in Atlanta
last week and he was using it. This was the first I had heard of it, it
looked pretty cool. Since I have never used FS either I can't really say if
it was better/worse/different, but what I can say is that Tejada is a killer
DJ and knew how to use the product quite well.

Here is a link to a few photos of him in action, you can't really see the
interface in the photos, but his powerbook is over to the right of the
turntables, click either forward or backward for a few other photos as well:
http://www.latenightessentials.com/gallery/viewer.phtml?gal=tejadacount=23

As I was watching him in action I was wondering if it's a tough transition
to go from using a bag of 100+ records at a gig to having an infinite amount
of music to choose from that must be searched on one's laptop harddrive. I
don't typically know song names, but know I want to play that Perlon song,
so I flip to the Perlon sleeve when DJing. Anyone have experience with this?
How are the search features set up? Search by artist, title, label, genre,
etc??

Microworld album on transmat is faaantastic!!!

Minto told us it was great, so my buddy Dan picked it up at the Festival
that day. We listened to it in the hotel room that evening (goes well with
whiskey and cokes). Next day I picked up my own copy at festival. Following
day I told another friend it was great, so he picked up a copy as well. We
listened to it a couple times on the drive back home after movement.

My favorite tune is DB. So catchy, smooth, and beautiful! Also, is that a
Talking Heads sample in the song TV?? Exotica is lovely as well, great work!

Will this be released on vinyl?

Haven't heard any of them except the Omar S 002 and I think it's great! I
made a discovery the other night by pure accident. The vocal cut, B-side
(labeled Detroit on mine), second song is the entire vocal from this song:

http://www.discogs.com/release/221094

Never heard of it or the artist until a couple nights ago. I picked some
records up from my parents house when I drove down for a visit and I had
this old Street Sounds record with old breakdance songs from the early
80's on it. The only song on the record I was familiar with was 'Din Daa
Daa' until I skipped through this song by Midway. And I thought man I know
that vocal!

Just an interesting tidbit in case this hasn't been discovered or posted
previously...

This is a helpful tool to use when the odd site comes through that's not in
a language you speak:

http://www.google.com/language_tools

It can translate web sites if you enter the URL, or you can enter in a block

There are many language-to-language translation combinations. Doesn't
translate precisely, but well enough so you can clearly understand what the
site or article is saying.

Another good one is also:

The Convergence LTD album 12 sampler includes the Serving Principles and

the convergence ep (VIS099) is ok, in particular the john tejada remix...
some of the vocals are a little dodgy I thought. The Electricology vinyls

On those rekkids some of you were asking about including on the mix
Plastic Dreams... nah.
Dominator - definitely not. I fell to peer pressure on this one when it
came out though. The guys at the local record shop were pushing it -
saying it's a huge hit, you'll love it. The thing is they'd usually be
bang on with my taste. I just bought it without listening - I don't
know... I just never liked Dominator.
Horsepower - almost made it. I had it in my hands, but decided against
it.

I almost didn't want to put Digeridoo on as well - but a couple of
people asked me to include it.

Maybe I should do a part 2. ;)

Cheers!

Didnt see this posted so here's the info:

PRESS RELEASE

FIRST PLASTIKMAN LIVE SHOW IN 9 YEARS
ANNOUNCED TODAY

Windsor, Ontario

March 2nd, 2004

Richie Hawtin announced today the first Plastikman live show on
plastikman.com. The event will take place June 3rd, 2004 in Montreal,
Canada as the opening event to this year’s Mutek festival (mutek.ca).
It

will be the first live performance of Plastikman material since 1995.

Hawtin describes the show as a rare, one-night performance
incorporating

multiple media with the artist controlling all parameters of the event.
As with his DJ sets, he will also involve unprecedented new artistic
technologies — all developed and customised for this show.

The following entities are partners in producing the show:

Mutek — www.mutek.ca http://www.mutek.ca
Derivative Inc. — www.derivativeinc.com http://www.derivativeinc.com
Crush Inc. — www.crushinc.com http://www.crushinc.com
Ableton, AG — www.ableton.com http://www.ableton.com
Digidesign — www.digidesign.com http://www.digidesign.com

Turkish video artist Ali Mahmut Demirel, who directed the eye-popping
video for the ‘Disconnect’ (novamute/Minus) single, as well as new
media

event producer/curator Kevin McHugh have both contributed to Hawtin’s
plans.

Previous Plastikman live shows have achieved almost mythic renown.
Artists, critics, and fans still talk about performances at Glastonbury
Festival, Tribal Gathering, and underground events in Detroit. In the
years since, Hawtin has increased his profile as a DJ and producer,
constantly updating, innovating and pioneering new technologies. The
current Plastikman album ‘Closer’ is out now on novamute/M-nus.

2004-03-03 Thread Adam H
It rained _really hard_ that night. I thought I was going to get stuck
on the freeway. The gear he used seemed to take up a garageworth of
space. Definitely pre-mp3-ableton-ni-powerbook.

I remember Terry Mullen playing blackout right before the show started,
then silence, screams, lights on peoples clothing with sunglasses, drp,
more screams, music starts, graphics start on the video screen, total
craziness for the next ~40 minutes. Trancendence was very different.
It was on a floor of a skyscraper right there in downtown Toronto. It
didnt feel underground at all, very big event in a large open space.
No video screen to accompany the music but the speakers emitted an evil
red glow at points. The music had a tighter feel from the Spastik
show.

Geez that happened 10 years ago, I feel old.

Dang kids today with their music collections in little iPods and
studios in little notebooks. Why in my day we walked miles in a bad
part of town with 100 pound record crates, in the snow, barefoot, and
we liked it. If gear couldnt give you a hernia or put you in debt it
was no good I tell you. New fangled computers matching beats for you,
pffft:P

hi Adam-
I also caught him live for the 1st time in 94 at Spastik in Detroit
too (was it really 10 years ago? holy shi*t), but missed
Transcendence, which may have been even bigger? Pre-mp3,
pre-Traktor, pre-Ableton, it was nearly pre-Clinton for god sake. I
gotta give him credit it was a mindblower of a party, the complete
experience. I mean at the time it was about as literally as 'techno'
as you could get in the US, I still may even have the flyer somewhere
(how sad am I). There was a pile of live gear / rack / PA stuff and
then if i recall he played some records. There really aren't parties
like that anymore in the US, at that scale (and venue and volume) in
Detroit, that still have a very underground feel with that level of
talent and almost fetishistic overwhelmingly huge sound systems. I
remember his parents were in the crowd, and there were some contorting
+8 dancers up on speakers peeling off layers of lycra clothing? (do i
have the right party here?? yikes, it's all a blur, hahh)

I kept thinking we're all gonna spontaneously combust it was so hot,
packed in, everything was covered in black plastic and dripping in
human perspiration. The sounds themselves felt like they were
dripping, it was intense. I'm sure whatever he'll do now from a
performance standpoint will be completely unique and innovative as
that's just his style, he's not one for nostalgia just for the sake of
it. Especially with the near-freakish control he usually has over
every element of the parties, from technology, audio/visual setups,
wanting the latest of everything, etc.

I haven't cared for his last couple of albums (or straight
jackhammer-like direction of his DJ sets in recent years) as much as
his earlier more sparse material. The first 2 Plastikman albums (Sheet
One and Musik) I think are still much better than the new ones IMHO..
but frankly i'm still glad he brought back the whole Plastikman
concept to life. It's interesting and makes you think, whether you
love it or hate it. It probably all depends on if/when you got into
his music and what tracks you got into (or out of) first...But
anyone who can go to this live set will probably be in for the 'total
experience' -- it's no slouchy organization, every detail matters.

What did people expect with Soundtracks, a new genre?

On Feb 23, 2004, at 12:29 PM, Greg Earle wrote:

There's a good interview with Ralf Hütter in the October 2003 issue of
the
English fashionista mag Dazed Confused (Vol. 2 #6), done by David

In it I was surprised to see this 313-related bit:

[...] A common criticism of Kraftwerk, evident in responses to
``Tour De France Soundtracks'', is that the future has caught up with
their 70s science fiction of numbers and money flowing through
cyberspace,

home computers and automation. The catch-up has produced some positive
benefits. Up until the late 90s, performing in a country like Brazil
would mean packing the whole Kling Klang studio into crates and
sending it

by boat via Rotterdam and across the Atlantic. This slow process took
months out of their work. ``Now with the latest laptop digital
equipment,
technology has developed in our direction, so that we can even...''
[Ralf]

mimes the action of breezing through passport control carrying a small
item of hand luggage.

You might describe this conundrum as the William Gibson Effect.
Gibson famously wrote ``Neuromancer'' on a typewriter, talking up his
personal vision of a non-existent entity called Cyberspace. As one
critic
claimed recently, Gibson may now be writing better books from a
literary

point of view, but life has overtaken his stories. When Kraftwerk
recorded ``Computer World'' in a three year period between 1979 and
1981,

they had no computers in the studio. ``It was more like fantasising,''
says Ralf. ``Only two or three years later were PCs coming onto the
market.''

I ask if they discuss this issue and the possible reaction of critics
who demand a constant level of innovation? ``We don't submit to the
dictatorship of the new,'' he says. ``It means nothing.'' ``Tour De
France Soundtracks'' is an exquisitely crafted album that seems to be
influenced by all the music that Kraftwerk has catalyzed into being.
During a discussion on Kraftwerk's minimalism, I ask Ralf if he listens
to music by digital minimalists like Ryoji Ikeda and Carsten Nicolai.
He thinks for a moment. ``More, mainly Detroit,' he says. ``Maybe
Richie Hawtin is more to my mind...'' The sentence fades away.

(I looked for this interview on-line, but couldn't find it. The mag
has

a Web site at http://www.Confused.CO.UK/ but no archives ... )

RE: (313) bands

2004-02-18 Thread Adam Smith
I really dig this band called Pinback, one album in particular called Blue
Screen Life, really nice stuff, more lush sounds than grindy guitar noise.

Also, other band called The Mercury Program, no vocals, just nice lush
music.

And one other I dig is called American Analog Set, in similar vein as the
others, with vocals. Latest album Promise of Love is great.

Also, probably a little better known is The Postal Service, more electronic
than traditional band though. Pretty cool sounds there. Apparently the
vocalist is also in a band called Deathcab for Cutie, but I am not familiar
with them.

Hope this helps!

And this got me wondering about Kraftwerk's fees. If it were an issue of

Final Scratch has allowed a lot of djs I know to sell off large chunks

originally posted on the tech-house list:

I've been silent on the best of 2003 list as i was
trying to pick from a bunch of records that i'm not
focused on right now. I'm in winter crazy mode which
lends itself to more introspective sounds and feelings.
so rather than try to put together a list of trax that
may or may not be a true representation (I never count
the number of plays, too drunk), I've decided to say
something that i really feel needs to be said.
I dunno 'bout 2003 but I feel Downlow records may well
be one of the most consistent, as well as consistently
overlooked, labels on earth. recently I posted a review
(or blabber more like) about some delsin records that
were recently released and that got me to thinking
about good techno labels that avoid the cliches of the
techno du jour and stay well into what they believe in.
Downlow is one of those. and though I believe one of
the label heads (minto I think) used to be on list (may
still be may not) I haven't heard much about them here.
Thats a shame. they've released nothing but top quality
stuff by leaders in the game (famous and not) and
judging by the soundbytes online for the next release
the moderator vs east island they ain't slowing down.
evidently these guys listen close to what buyers want
as well, I've never seen them release less than 4 trax
on a disc, sometimes I've seen 5 or 6 even. never got a
bad pressing...yet :) and they have full song streaming
soundbytes online at their site. plus they're one of
the few stateside labels to hold it down for original
melodic techno. got that off my chest. phew!

and before anyone asks, NO I don't know the label
owners personally ($tinkworx and minto), NO I am not
affiliated with them in any way except musical taste.
just felt that more people should give props where
they're due, cuz If you won't... who will? plus most
praise nowadays is just blowing sunshine so it's about
time someone spoke from the heart. peace y'all. stay
true. think forward.

anyone got any labels that are dear to the heart/sound
that they feel ain't getting proper exposure? (I'm
always up for new sources of great music) this kind of
topic may be well important to smaller labels in these
days of faltering sales etc. so Speak Up!

I agree wholeheartedly with Andrew's thoughts on

***Please note; though I agree with that nice email
about downlow records, it was Kamal Stoddard who wrote
and posted that email. Kamal had posted it on the
tech-house list and i simply forwarded it to the 313
and techno lists. Kamal wrote the email, I just
forwarded it. Andrew Duke

Minto and the boys
got it together. The latest East Island vs Moderator
 and Convextion releases
are absolutely wonderful, as is the not so recent Arne
 Weinberg 'Beauty in
Decay' record. Rumor has it that there is a full
length
 Convextion album
coming next year hopefully. I'm patiently waiting.

 Happy New Year to all.

originally posted on the tech-house list:

I've been silent on the best of 2003 list as i was
trying to pick from a bunch of records that i'm not
focused on right now. I'm in winter crazy mode which
lends itself to more introspective sounds and
feelings.
so rather than try to put together a list of trax that
may or may not be a true representation (I never count
the number of plays, too drunk), I've decided to say
something that i really feel needs to be said.
I dunno 'bout 2003 but I feel Downlow records may well
be one of the most consistent, as well as consistently
overlooked, labels on earth. recently I posted a
review
(or blabber more like) about some delsin records that
were recently released and that got me to thinking
about good techno labels that avoid the cliches of the
techno du jour and stay well into what they believe
in.
Downlow is one of those. and though I believe one of
the label heads (minto I think) used to be on list
(may
still be may not) I haven't heard much about them
here.
Thats a shame. they've released nothing but top
quality
stuff by leaders in the game (famous and not) and
judging by the soundbytes online for the next release
the moderator vs east island they ain't slowing
down.
evidently these guys listen close to what buyers want
as well, I've never seen them release less than 4 trax
on a disc, sometimes I've seen 5 or 6 even. never got
a
bad pressing...yet :) and they have full song
streaming
soundbytes online at their site. plus they're one of
the few stateside labels to hold it down for original
melodic techno. got that off my chest. phew!

and before anyone asks, NO I don't know the label
owners personally ($tinkworx and minto), NO I am not
affiliated with them in any way except musical taste.
just felt that more people should give props where
they're due, cuz If you won't... who will? plus most
praise nowadays is just blowing sunshine so it's about
time someone spoke from the heart. peace y'all. stay
 true. think forward.

anyone got any labels that are dear to the heart/sound
that they feel ain't getting proper exposure? (I'm
always up for new sources of great music) this kind of
topic may be well important to smaller labels in these
days of faltering sales etc. so Speak Up!
