Nice to see that Mr. Fingers remix now available at the full 8min 17 sec vs
the 90secs or so that was on the album. In new Moodymann remix news, this
came out August 26 but just learned about it today:

Happy Birthday, Dan Sicko

2020-09-26 Thread Andrew Duke
Happy Birthday, Dan. "Daniel S. Sicko [26Sep1968-28Aug2011] was a music
journalist and scholar of techno music dedicated to legitimizing Detroit
techno and establishing its place in music history. He earned a B.S. from
the University of Detroit in 1990 and established a career in digital
advertising, ultimately serving as a Creative Director of the Detroit
office of the advertising firm Organic, Inc. Early in his career Sicko was
a freelance writer for *Rolling Stone*, electronic and underground music
periodicals such as *Alternative Press* and *URB*, and the digital
technology magazine *Wired*. He also founded *Reverb*, one of the first
periodicals exclusively devoted to digital music. Sicko is perhaps best
known for his book *Techno Rebels: The Renegades of Electronic Funk* (first
published in 1999 and reissued in 2010), which is widely considered to be a
groundbreaking text with regard to the history of Detroit techno music. *Techno
Rebels* chronicles the genre's origins as an underground movement led by
Detroit's African-American high school students. Sicko also gave lectures
on the Detroit music scene and was a key figure in the establishment of the
313 Mailing List (a 1990s mailing list critical for enthusiasts of Detroit
techno). Throughout his career Sicko engaged in extensive researches on the
Detroit music industry and on electronic music in general, for which he
conducted dozens of interviews with Detroit-based techno artists and
producers."

like Moodymann (not an artist I hear in the apartment unless I am playing).
Asked and was shown the album playing: yes, indeed, he has remixed Dua
Lipa. It is on her new release and whereas the other songs are very short
and abruptly segued, Moody's remix of "Break My Heart" is last and gets to
stretch out at 6min11secs so likely the full rx and not an edit. While he
has certainly remixed a few other vocalists since Norma Jean Bell and Jose

Re: New Terrence Dixon

2020-08-27 Thread Andrew Duke
Terrence Dixon is an incredible musician. I WAS a big fan until recently
when I finally grew tired of his bullying: sending abusive messages to
myself and many others (I have seen the screenshots) because of the ongoing
campaign to bring #TheTaker (a Detroit DJ who runs Transmat) to task for a)
unpaid royalties to people including Thomas Barnett, Blake Baxter, Dr
Motte, Cisco Ferreira, Eddie Fowlkes, Michael James b) not crediting
collaborators correctly c) most importantly, the growing number of reports
from many women that #TheTaker takes advantage of women as he benefits from
the 1988 Belleville 3 marketing still 32 years later implying that he is an
innovator. Terrence Dixon remixed one of my songs released in 2009, so when
I deleted all things related to him including his remix of me it was
particularly painful to know that a man once a hero to me is no longer
viewed the same way.

New Robert Hood & Floorplan

2020-08-02 Thread Andrew Duke
Robert Hood did a great DJ set July 20 for Boiler Room's Streaming From
Isolation series. There were some who didn't get why a Black man might get
political and just wanted wanted him to play instrumental music; the
negative comments on the mix's YouTube link are certainly telling in many
ways. Now looks like the times where he was playing samples of activists
speaking could have been him debuting new material; he has 3 new songs out
soon (details in the link); one features Tamika Mallory speaking about
George Floyd's murder and another has the voice of the late great Dick
Gregory. (I have featured samples from the later in live performances
often):

new Inner City LP & KMS interview

2020-07-18 Thread Andrew Duke
Anyone who has followed my posts on here over the decades know that Kevin
Sanderson is my fave Detroit artist with Juan Atkins a close second. Have
finally had a chance to give the new Inner City LP a few focused listens
and it takes me back to that happiness felt when I first heard "Big Fun" in
1988. Whereas Kevin Saunderson usually does some spoken word, on the title
track to "We All Move Together" that is handled by Idris Elba. There are 11
vocal songs: 8 with Steffanie Christi'an and 3 with Zebra Octobra. Was
unfamiliar with the latter; found some songs from her from a few years
back: downtempo with focus on socio-political concerns including Flint and
area water crisis. Zebra Octobra def holds her own here. My only
disappointment was that the song I raved about here 2 years ago (that was
"Heavy" and had an incredible remix from Carl Craig) is not here in the
same version. Lyrics and music are tweaked and it becomes "Dance". Perhaps
had to be changed as released originally on KMS and not Armada like
"Believe", "Living In A Dream", "Need Your Love", and "Save Me" have been.
In this interview published in Forbes, Kevin talks about the concerns we
have shared here about "whitewash"ing at music festivals and Black
underrepresentation:

Re: Terrence Dixon stream

2020-07-17 Thread Andrew Duke
I have been a fan since I first played Terrence Dixon in 1994. When he
remixed one of my songs in 2009 (released in 2010), it took me a while to
wrap my head around it. Like that remix and his music and reworks of others
and especially his live sets: TD does exactly what he wants. That is a good
thing. So many others afraid to take risks, afraid to do something
different, worried what others think. TD just does his thing.

new Niko Marks: "Carry Me" ft Trina Williams

2020-07-14 Thread Andrew Duke
Niko Marks has a tune called Carry Me out on his U2X productions this
month. A vocal tune that comes in two versions. It is like old school Inner
City meets Robert Hood with a new twist and laid-back vocals a la Paris
Grey: stabs and filters and vox. If we weren't in COVID times and I had a
club gig I would be hammering this in every set. Keep an eye out for it.

A fave of mine, Jon Dixon has a new EP out end of this month on 4EVR 4WRD

and De'Sean Jones. EP certainly an appropriate title for today. For those
not familiar, he is a wiz on the keyboards and has performed live with
Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Timeline and worked with tons of Detroit's finest.

Re: WaPo article about blackness & techno

2020-07-09 Thread Andrew Duke
Definitely need promoters putting more Black as well as female and LBGT
artists on bills. Can't remember the name of the most recent European
festival cited, but some artists who perform at other festivals had a
thread on Facebook about certain European festivals booking the same
lineup--and the majority were white and male--over again year in and year
out. Even when doing things in these virtual times for streaming, no excuse
for lineups made up primarily of predominantly white and male artists. I
was happy to be introduced to a new artist--The AM--over Movement weekend.
She plays excellent electro mostly Detroit and need to see her booked
outside of Michigan.

Second that that Shawn Rudiman Conduit album is stellar. Released on the

his forthcoming EP called "One For Choutsugai" features Eva Soul on vocals
(she's from Hamtramck and has sung on records for Rick Wade) and includes a
remix from Niko Marks. Still digging the Eternal Student's "Hear ME Though"

DEMF 20th anniversary party yesterday

2020-05-28 Thread Andrew Duke
Some awesome music at yesterday's 20th anniversary DEMF party; Norm Talley
did a tribute set to Mike Huckaby and The AM played electro from Drexciya
and related. K-Hand, Hotwaxx Hale, Terrence Parker, and DJ Godfather were
other Detroiters with stellar sets (the running order matches the posters
except Brian played last after TP). Most performed at Urban Bean (once
housed Blake Baxter's record store). Highlights for me were Keith Tucker
performing live as Optic Nerve from his home studio and Lou & Ken from Scan
7 making their machines sing right there on the streetfront. At this point,
the shorter vid at link below has the first few hours and the main video
has the rest. Don't let the gaps between sets throw you off. Keith starts
at 6hr20min into the long video and Scan 7 right after him:

Re: What after-parties did everyone go to?

2020-05-26 Thread Andrew Duke
Some great Detroiters in the ones you mentioned. Though no Detroiters
involved, my fave has been the
Virtual Industry Brunch that happened yesterday and still available at
twitch.tv/club_bubble1
And, like, if that ain't a Drexciya reference, then what is, eh? ;)
2 hour live set from Shawn Rudiman and 2 hour DJ set from Titonton Duvante
were killer; Christina Chatfield
did a stellar 90 minute live set and Pat Bosman played a ton of Detroit
gems in his DJ set. Plus lots of other goodies
including a modular set from Edmonton's Clinker. Was geared up to release
an album from him 15 years ago, but
got soured on running my label when a couple of other artists thought it
was going to make them big $.
I watched it all yesterday live and as I type this am re-enjoying all the
goodness.

Axis announces artists out this Fall

2020-05-19 Thread Andrew Duke
Axis just announced Detroiters Gerald Mitchell, Amp Fiddler, and Eddie
Fowlkes will have new releases out on the label this Fall, alongside some
non Detroiters. Lots of new material coming is great to see. Shawn and John
mentioned next are not from Detroit but hope you'll forgive this
update: Shawn Rudiman has a new album out June 5 on Pittsburgh Tracks. It
can be simply described with one word: wow! Truly a techno & electronic
music masterclass. John Tejada follows up the recent EP on his Palette
label (featured a Plaid rx) with a new project: John Tejada Presents Future
Stars: A Compilation Benefiting Macmillan Cancer Support Featuring Students
from Tejada’s CalArts Music Production Class. Terrence Dixon has new
material on the way and Scan 7 are staying busy, too. These 4 are all
artists I support who have been innovating for 20+ years, some more than
25. I urge you to support actual innovators instead of buying re-releases
from fallen icons.

This month will see the release of new material on Mike Grant's Moods &
Grooves label. Artist is Eternal Student aka Detroiter Marvin Prather with
"Hear Me Though". There are two originals plus two remixes of the title
track. One of the remixes involves Brian Neal who has featured on Reggie
Dokes' Psychostasia imprint. Digital in a couple weeks and vinyl when the
COVID-19 situation passes.

Take care everyone.

new music from Eddie Fowlkes and also Thomas Barnett

2020-03-19 Thread Andrew Duke
Music helps in the good times and also helps in challenging times like we
are currently facing with the COVID-19 situation.

Some techno legends continue to release new music. Last month, it was Blake
Baxter with his "Into The Groove" collaboration with Abe Duque released on
Kevin's Saunderson's KMS imprint.

April will see new material out from Eddie Fowlkes and also Thomas Barnett.

Eddie has restarted City Boy Music and his "Knuckle Head" series will see
EPs released in April and May and a third to follow later in the year. The
first release is two songs, not sure about the others, and is out April 17.

Many don't realize that Thomas Barnett is the man behind "Nude Photo". He
operates the Visillusion label; the "Low Tech Funk" EP is due out the same
day as Eddie's release. A nice coincidence. "Low Tech Funk" features 3 new
songs from TB and 3 from friend Ecilo.

I'm lucky to have promos on both these and they are quite enjoyable and
recommended.

Wishing everyone all the best.

Kevin Saunderson & Carl Craig

2020-02-24 Thread Andrew Duke
In 1988, Kevin Saunderson was the musical "gateway drug" that lead me to my
love of Detroit electronic music and all things techno. As a DJ, I was
buying every dance-related 12", EP, and LP that came into Halifax NS and I
saw at the local radio station. When "Techno! The New Dance Sound of
Detroit" hit my local store, and Master Reese remixes of Wee Papa Girls,
Samantha Fox, Paula Abdul and others were in my sets, I was cemented as a
lifelong member of Team KMS. I am glad there is new Inner City album
scheduled for this year. The Chuck Daniels remix of their "Bad Girl" single
in 2017 (with LaRae Starr on vox) still puts a smile on my face:

https://www.discogs.com/Inner-City-Feat-LaRae-Starr-Good-Luck/release/10131660

Released December 31, 2018 is my fave more-recent Inner City single and the
remix from Carl Craig (in the game since 1991) is the stunner here, IMO:
https://www.discogs.com/Inner-City-featuring-Steffanie-Christian-Heavy/release/12393959

That one and the new album will feature vocalist Steffanie Christian
prominently. There's been a few singles in 2019.

Speaking of Carl Craig, I am still enjoying the "Detroit Love" comp he
released from Wajeed
https://www.discogs.com/Waajeed-Detroit-Love/release/14424764
and there's a new 2-tracker forthcoming on his Planet E from Detroit duo
Ataxia worth checking.

2001 Drexciya feature given "refresh"

2018-11-26 Thread Andrew Duke
I was lucky to interview the late James Stinson of Drexciya over the phone
in December 2001 (so nervous that I called BMG for a pep talk before the
call). Aired the audio on my syndicated mixshow and published a text
feature on my Cognition Audioworks website. The audio is a challenge to
listen to at times. Stephen Rennicks (who has tirelessly run the Drexciya

Great to have the audio for this 2002 interview now online. And such a
great wealth of info here not covered by myself or Liz Copeland. Cannot
overemphasize the tireless work Stephen Rennicks does at Drexciya Research
Lab. And, nope, not mentioned in the other thread as this only just made
available like this very recently.

Re: Why Drexciya Took Detroit Electro Underwater

2018-10-18 Thread Andrew Duke
Ronnie: Tuesday afternoon FB feeds showed me RA had published a YouTube
video titled same as this thread topic. As a HUGE Drexciya fan, I saved the
link to check when I got home from work. Didn't check the torrent of emails
and messages and notifications that turned out to be related. Tuesday night
I finally had a chance to check it. Tired from OT at work, my ears still
pricked up when I heard my own voice. In a Drexciya feature in 2018. HUH? I
listened again and clued in that my 2001 interview formed the majority of
the James Stinson spoken word heard. Liz Copeland's 2002 interview also
used. I was in shock as no credits. None. And I was already no fan of RA
and other sites like that. I conferred with friends involved in journalism
such as Kent (and Terry at 5 Mag in Chicago) to make sure I wasn't being a
jack-arse being upset about this. Cut to 48 hours later and I am so darn
exhausted. I don't think Liz Copeland aware, so envy the sleep she didn't
miss out on. RA has continued to be an arse. Like Fact a year ago, they
have not gotten back to me. I know they never will. And if there hadn't
been an uproar, certain the credits would never have been added. The Oct 11
feature about Resident Advisor and the site history itself rings so much
clearer in light of all this Oct 16 Drexciya "collage" nonsense posted on
RA. 313 is about Detroit. RA will talk about Detroit if that helps re
advertising $, of course. At least all this has caused more to hear the
voice of James Stinson. That and Drexciya music are what matter most in all
this debacle. Back to work for me. Andrew

Kero & Kyle Hall are releasing a 2-track on Detroit Underground (DU33)
January 22 as K2. "Zug Tools" will be out on Digital and Vinyl. One song
has almost an electro vibe, the other is four on the floor. Worth checking.
Just noticed this sounds almost like I copied or wrote a press release, but
nope, just the way it came out! ;) Not doing promo for any labels.
