RE: (313) Detroit In Effect/Whatever Happened To The Future?
(- right not it's the 'Cologne' school, Kompact, Dial et al which gets my vote for genuine unforeseen music, imho). But if you're honest the Kompakt labels also follow a typical route, something we know as the Cologne sound, means they also don't invent anything really new. They have their own sound which all of the artists you mentioned have (Juan Atkins, Kenny Larkin, etc.) but in their sound they are also repetive that's a simple rule in music you will always be repetive in some way If Let me think is really 14 years old that it's much more impressive of course as it still sounds fresh and not dated. Greetz, Arne

RE: (313)Kenny Larkin was: radio playlist - 25/4/04
I can't understand why you are talking about pop songs? I don't know if you heard this new track by Kenny but I only can say that I don't see the pop appeal in this tune. Like you said, it's not the next new style he is inventing here but I also don't think that this was his goal. If you mean pop song as a track with a message and a certain feel than this new track from Kenny is pop, okay! If you mean an airplay compatible tune then you're wrong, sorry! it's a retro (I hate that word!) housey piano track with a smooth feel and nice melodies. Not more but also not less! I still think the most important thing in music is if you get an impression, a feel, an athmosphere when you listen to tracks. Having a mesage is much more important that having invented a new style without what we call soul. I don't need the newest super-duper mega software generated synthesizer sound if it doesn't catch my ear and most important my mind and soul Greetz, Arne Dan Bean [EMAIL PROTECTED] schrieb: I don't know how old it is, but in terms of style it easily could be. Haven't heard the album yet, so I can't comment on the rest of the new material, but this track certainly couldn't be described as a massive leap forward or new direction for him. I personally don't have a problem with this since the 'old fashioned' skill of making a well constructed and composed tune (in other words writing a pop song) gives me as much listening pleasure as wondrous and startling developments in the process of song making (see K-Led for a prime example of the former). As Fabrizio was saying the other day, there seems to be an interest in past forms from many 313 producers at the moment, maybe this is because they are into writing pop songs at the moment - something that seems much more prevalent in the older soul and funk 313 styles. Any avowed futurists out there who are dismayed by this 'retrograde' activity? Re: (313) Kenny Larkin - Pop/Ava
Hi Ken and Dan and all the other 313 members I totally understand now what Dan meant with pop pop in the ususal way is something more negative in my opinion but in the way that Dan and Ken are talking about it I can only agree! I didn't mean it offensive in any way, only didn't understand what Dan was saying about that Kenny Larkin track. Maybe I was sounding a little bit to angry or something because I can't stand the innovation topic no more. This discussion is s old and boring that I felt bad in that moment because like I said in my opinion it's the message in the first place. There are Black Sabbath tracks that still have more message than any Limp Bizkit or HIM tracks ever can reach and those Black Sabbath tracks are 30 years old! And still people do music with only a drumkit, two guitars, a bass and a singer why has electronic music to be always the next innovative thing? Look at Drum and Bass and what happened to it with all its fast innovations??? So as you can see I misunderstood it a little bit and therefore I'm sorry! Thanx for taking Beauty in decay as a reference :-) Greetz, Arne Hey Arne, Dan could well be referring to a track like 'Beauty In Decay' here, when he mentions the word 'pop'. So in this sense, it's not derogatory - *defn. not a bad thing*. 'Beauty In Decay' is after all (to me) a bit of an early-decade marker. I mean 'pop' here, more relates to something where the changes and the texture are not so widely divergent from the 'classical' song structure that it bears no relation to it. Personally, I favor what's well done and I know innovation comes in many forms - including that innovation within an already existing style. I am just puzzled when people try to imitate past moments *verbatim as it were. What's the point? Apart from focusing on the bottom line - which is anathema imo when it comes to this music, not that it should be completely irrelevant, but I'm not going to be impressed by a crass pursuit of it all the same. This I think we all agree doesn't apply to any of the tracks which we're talking about. Ken Well the reason I mentioned the track initially is because I played it on the show on Friday, so yes, I have heard it ;P As for pop, what I meant was the aspect of composition that is about creating melodies and pleasing chord changes/harmonies as opposed to the rhythmic/repetitive aspect. To my ear, the Larkin tune is quite 'pop' in this sense (amongst other things), but then I'd also say that 'Codebreaker' or 'Strings' are pop tunes. I agree that atmosphere is very important, this is something that lasts throughout a track (hopefully) whereas pop is about an instantaneous hit or series of hits. I think pop is important for techno, and many of my favourite tunes are those with great pop moments ('Game One' springs to mind). But I also love music totally devoid of pop from Mills or Basic Channel. :) You wrote: I can't understand why you are talking about pop songs? The whole album plays out like an album should, a full context of itself, with each song becoming a part of a greater whole, which is very enjoyable as a listener. All of the compositions include somewhat basic production methods, but used in a sort of finesse that really uses each part to its potential, instead of relying on tons of layers to tune out things that don't quite work. The very industrial-inspired vocal work is pretty non-descript and not over-the-top or cheesy, as one would suspect simply given the description. The heavy use of delay and reverb gives every production a lot of space and feel, ala Consumed, but the songs all have more of driving presence akin to the direction of earlier albums (sheet one, musik). I agree to Tom's opinion. Of course you will recognize a Jeff Mills record when you hear it but that's a sign for his unique production style. And nobody can tell me that Mills doesn't even try to create something new. Those tracks are really complex but also very good. And I don't want to start a discussion about the artistical approach of Jeff Mills' music here again... ;-) I also heard the upcoming Part 4 of Every dog has... (Axis 30)... another good part! Melodic, deep Detroit Techno from this mastermind filled with groovy percussions, nice synth chords and strings that make clear that music from Detroit still can hit you directly into the heart. Blue fantasy aimes on the dancefloor with some cool Hihats, a deep kick and some brilliant synth melodies. Winter long is my personal favourite track on this 12 inch, as it starts with those typical amazing John Beltran string chords and brazil influenced percussions combined with a cool bassline before the tracks finally kicks off with some serious beats after 2 1/2 minutes. Simply brilliant! Inca is more minimal than the other tracks and also very dancefloor orientated with a very catchy rhythm arrangement and some minimal sparse synth chords, reminding a little bit on Aril Brikha for example. Also featured on the 12 inch is a remix of Inca by Josh Wink that doesn't add too much new to the original version. [313] New Transmat artist?
Hello folks! I received a new 12 on Transmat by an artist I have never heard of before he is called Rodenbush and I really like the deeper track on the b-side. Can anybody tell me more about this artist? I also heard the next Transmat 12 by John Arnold today. really great stuff! On the A side is a very nice brazil jazzy house track that reminds me on the last John Beltran album. Really sweet! And on the other side are two tracks that sound a little bit like some Recloose stuff the winner is definitely side A. Cheers, Arne -- °°° www.arneweinberg.de STARBABY Rec. DOWN LOW MUSIC NATIVE Rec. Module played a very dark(for seattle)live set that got all us west coasterners out of our shell, then Brendon played a two hour live set, need I say more? This was probably the best party, barring Random Noise Generation, that Ive seen in Seattle. Both sets can be downloaded off of www.robotrash.com. The links are at the bottom of that page. Hopefully a little of its vibe will transfer through those wires. enjoy! chana _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- °°° www.arneweinberg.de STARBABY Rec.
