Of course there are a lot of clubs but in my personal opinion they are crap.
Apart from the Robert Johnson Club (which is okay most of the time) there is
Sven Väth's club Cocoon (Ricardo Villalobos and other djs), the U 60 (Chris

RE: (313) Detroit In Effect/Whatever Happened To The Future?

2004-04-30 Thread Arne Weinberg
(- right not it's the 'Cologne' school, Kompact, Dial et al which gets my vote
for genuine
 unforeseen music, imho).

But if you're honest the Kompakt labels also follow a typical route, something
we know as the Cologne sound, means they also don't invent anything really
new. They have their own sound which all of the artists you mentioned have
(Juan Atkins, Kenny Larkin, etc.) but in their sound they are also repetive
that's a simple rule in music you will always be repetive in some way
If Let me think is really 14 years old that it's much more impressive of
course as it still sounds fresh and not dated.

RE: (313)Kenny Larkin was: radio playlist - 25/4/04

2004-04-26 Thread Arne Weinberg
I can't understand why you are talking about pop songs? I don't know if you
heard this new track by Kenny but I only can say that I don't see the pop
appeal in this tune.
Like you said, it's not the next new style he is inventing here but I also
don't think that this was his goal. If you mean pop song as a track with a
message and a certain feel than this new track from Kenny is pop, okay! If you
mean an airplay compatible tune then you're wrong, sorry! it's a retro (I
hate that word!) housey piano track with a smooth feel and nice melodies. Not
more but also not less! I still think the most important thing in music is if
you get an impression, a feel, an athmosphere when you listen to tracks. Having
a mesage is much more important that having invented a new style without what
we call soul.
I don't need the newest super-duper mega software generated synthesizer sound
if it doesn't catch my ear and most important my mind and soul

Haven't heard the album yet, so I can't comment on the rest of the new
material, but this track certainly couldn't be described as a massive leap
forward or new direction for him.

I personally don't have a problem with this since the 'old fashioned' skill
of making a well constructed and composed tune (in other words writing a pop
song) gives me as much listening pleasure as wondrous and startling
developments in the process of song making (see K-Led for a prime example of
 the former).

As Fabrizio was saying the other day, there seems to be an interest in past
forms from many 313 producers at the moment, maybe this is because they are
into writing pop songs at the moment - something that seems much more
prevalent in the older soul and funk 313 styles.

Any avowed futurists out there who are dismayed by this 'retrograde' activity?

Re: (313) Kenny Larkin - Pop/Ava

2004-04-26 Thread Arne Weinberg
Hi Ken and Dan and all the other 313 members

I totally understand now what Dan meant with pop pop in the ususal way
is something more negative in my opinion but in the way that Dan and Ken are
talking about it I can only agree!
I didn't mean it offensive in any way, only didn't understand what Dan was
saying about that Kenny Larkin track.

Maybe I was sounding a little bit to angry or something because I can't stand
the innovation topic no more. This discussion is s old and boring that I
felt bad in that moment because like I said in my opinion it's the message in
the first place. There are Black Sabbath tracks that still have more message
than any Limp Bizkit or HIM tracks ever can reach and those Black Sabbath
tracks are 30 years old! And still people do music with only a drumkit, two
guitars, a bass and a singer why has electronic music to be always the next
innovative thing? Look at Drum and Bass and what happened to it with all its
fast innovations???

So as you can see I misunderstood it a little bit and therefore I'm sorry!
Thanx for taking Beauty in decay as a reference :-)

Greetz, Arne

Hey Arne, Dan could well be referring to a track like 'Beauty In Decay'
here, when he mentions the word 'pop'. So in this sense, it's not
derogatory - *defn. not a bad thing*. 'Beauty In Decay' is after all (to me)
a bit of an early-decade marker. I mean 'pop' here, more relates to
something where the changes and the texture are not so widely divergent from
the 'classical' song structure that it bears no relation to it.

Personally, I favor what's well done and I know innovation comes in many
forms - including that innovation within an already existing style. I am
just puzzled when people try to imitate past moments *verbatim as it were.
What's the point? Apart from focusing on the bottom line - which is anathema
imo when it comes to this music, not that it should be completely
irrelevant, but I'm not going to be impressed by a crass pursuit of it all
 the same.

This I think we all agree doesn't apply to any of the tracks which we're
 talking about.

 Ken

Well the reason I mentioned the track initially is because I
played it on the show on Friday, so yes, I have heard it ;P

As for pop, what I meant was the aspect of composition that is
about creating melodies and pleasing chord changes/harmonies as
opposed to the rhythmic/repetitive aspect. To my ear, the Larkin
tune is quite 'pop' in this sense (amongst other things), but then
I'd also say that 'Codebreaker' or 'Strings' are pop tunes.

I agree that atmosphere is very important, this is something that
lasts throughout a track (hopefully) whereas pop is about an
instantaneous hit or series of hits. I think pop is important for
techno, and many of my favourite tunes are those with great pop
moments ('Game One' springs to mind). But I also love music
totally devoid of pop from Mills or Basic Channel.

 :)

Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, as I haven't yet
   seen
anything about it.

After giving Closer a few listens, I have to say that I'm very
 impressed
at not only the musical quality but the way in which Plastikman was
 able
to keep that traditional Plastikman sound, yet meld it into a new
 album
   that
isn't walking on exactly the same ground that he's walked before. The
   whole
album plays out like an album should, a full context of itself, with
 each
song becoming a part of a greater whole, which is very enjoyable as a
listener. All of the compositions include somewhat basic production
methods, but used in a sort of finesse that really uses each part to
 its
potential, instead of relying on tons of layers to tune out things
 that
don't quite work.
The very industrial-inspired vocal work is pretty non-descript and not
over-the-top or cheesy, as one would suspect simply given the
 description.
The heavy use of delay and reverb gives every production a lot of
 space
   and
feel, ala Consumed, but the songs all have more of driving presence
 akin
to the direction of earlier albums (sheet one, musik).
This album is a marvel in keeping pace with expectation without
dissapointing the faithful followers of a specific sound, while adding
   some
new elements. Definitely Plastikman, but at the same time, definitely
   new.
Buy on site.

Re: (313) Plastikman - Closer

2003-08-05 Thread Arne Weinberg
In my opinion the new album is much more Plastikman again than the last ones.
Richie concentrated again on the sound he got famous before he did such IMHO
crappy stuff like the Orange 12. This is a worth foolow up to Muzik and Sheet
One adapted to 2003. Will definitely be one of the important albums of 2003 for
sure.

in especially with the synthy opening. I think Ping Pong and Headcase are
very good also. When listening to the albulm I think its important to keep
in mind that it is a concept albulm, bringing you closer into the mind of
Mr Hawtin. I think the vocals are a very important part of the albulm which
relates directly to the concept behind it all. I'm constantly amazed on how
dark the albulm feels. I will agree with Dennis and say that it is a must
buy when it comes out in October.

Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, as I haven't yet
 seen
  anything about it.

After giving Closer a few listens, I have to say that I'm very impressed
at not only the musical quality but the way in which Plastikman was able
to keep that traditional Plastikman sound, yet meld it into a new album
 that
isn't walking on exactly the same ground that he's walked before. The
 whole
album plays out like an album should, a full context of itself, with each
song becoming a part of a greater whole, which is very enjoyable as a
listener. All of the compositions include somewhat basic production
methods, but used in a sort of finesse that really uses each part to its
potential, instead of relying on tons of layers to tune out things that
  don't quite work.
The very industrial-inspired vocal work is pretty non-descript and not
over-the-top or cheesy, as one would suspect simply given the description.
The heavy use of delay and reverb gives every production a lot of space
 and
feel, ala Consumed, but the songs all have more of driving presence akin
to the direction of earlier albums (sheet one, musik).
This album is a marvel in keeping pace with expectation without
dissapointing the faithful followers of a specific sound, while adding
 some
new elements. Definitely Plastikman, but at the same time, definitely
 new.
  Buy on site.

Innerzone Orchestra was totally different thing and I think there is an obvious
reason why Carl uses so many different monikers for his records. Nobody can
really expect Carl to do only bedroom listening stuff because he did some
absolute classic soulful deep listening music. Nobody can expect that Carl only
does his future jazz records liek Innerzone or Detroit Experiment. And nobody
can expect from Carl that he only does dancefloor stuff like Paerclip People or
Tres demented.
What I want to say is that he has very different facettes and we should be glad
that he releases those different styles. And Carl Craig is not a musical
machine, so he can make tracks that might seem not to be genious as usual
Music is a question of taste.

hello dear listmembers!

I already expected some serious email discussions on the new Planet E 12 by

But obviously I seem to be one of the first Carl Craig addicts that have this
record now.
Believe me, this is one of the hottest records of the year! Definitely! It will
blow away all the dancefloors on earth for the rest of the year.
I don't post a complete detailed review because I don't need to. There are only
5 words I have to use:
BUY IT AND BOW DOWN!

The record says: Thanks to Mr. Laurent Garnier for the edits... so also a big

Delsin suprises with some deep slamming electro! After the likeminded

Delsin-label brings another deeply talented electro artist. This
striking EP brings energetic stuff, reminding to the earlier releases

Dopplereffekt-like jam. The second track boosts all dust out of the
disco, with it’s hunting bassline and beats. First track on side b

Of course you will recognize a Jeff Mills record when you hear it but that's a

Those tracks are really complex but also very good.
And I don't want to start a discussion about the artistical approach of Jeff

Indio Indio EP Transmat [12 inch]
John Beltran returns with his Indio alias on Transmat after his excellent
Brazil flavoured album on Ubiquity Records with tracks that remind on his
brilliant album on RS Earth Nightfall. Melodic, deep Detroit Techno
from this mastermind filled with groovy percussions, nice synth chords and
strings that make clear that music from Detroit still can hit you directly
into the heart. Blue fantasy aimes on the dancefloor with some cool
Hihats, a deep kick and some brilliant synth melodies. Winter long is my
personal favourite track on this 12 inch, as it starts with those typical
amazing John Beltran string chords and brazil influenced percussions
combined with a cool bassline before the tracks finally kicks off with some
serious beats after 2 1/2 minutes. Simply brilliant! Inca is more minimal
than the other tracks and also very dancefloor orientated with a very catchy
rhythm arrangement and some minimal sparse synth chords, reminding a little
bit on Aril Brikha for example. Also featured on the 12 inch is a remix of
Inca by Josh Wink that doesn't add too much new to the original version. A
brilliant record of John Beltran giving hope that Transmat will reach their
high quality of the former days again in the future! (Arne Weinberg)

Re: (313) new Ratio release

2003-02-25 Thread Arne Weinberg
It's a veeery good one!
The Soul Designer remix is a winner! Very rocking but with the typical
trademark for him, the great melodic SH 101 sounds and some smooth strings
The Substance remix is typical Chain Reaction style with some dubby elements
and a cool piano chord. Nearly no beats, very reduced... great! For all Basic
Channel/Chain Reaction fans... the Memory Foundation remix is the looser on
this in my honest opinion. It doesn't add very much, sounds like an extra track
to fill the record...
In total a very good record...

(313) Moodyman question

2003-02-05 Thread Arne Weinberg
hello dear list members...

This might be a silly question for some trainspotters out there and I don't
know if this was already asked before:

I'm interested into that short piece of music that Moodyman has in his intro
and outro of the B-side of KDJ 007 (Moodymann-The city/Detroit---Don't be
misled) that comes just in for a moment together with those street sound
samples...
It sounds like an old Mo' Town song.

Does anybody which artist made this track and how it is called?

Many thanks in advance,

Re: (313) Re: new vinyl recommendations

2002-12-10 Thread Arne Weinberg
Hello folks!

Some recommendations? Okay, here we go:
Check out Titonton's new 12 on Starbaby (SB09) with the amazing Dan Curtin
remix. I think Titonton returns back to a more concentrated appeal of his sound
with this record. I had the impression that he got lost in his SH 101 action
and jazzy experiments on the last records he made... now he is back with a more
straighter stripped down to the essence release. Really great! And the Dan
Curtin remix is high quality as usual. More dancefloor orientated than
Titonton's original

Also absolutely recommended is the new LP by Kettel on Dub (DUBLP07) Beautiful
deep electronica that reminds me on Black Dog sometimes. Great electronic
sounds with lots of soul and athmosphere. Perfectly for some holidays of your
brain when you try to get rid of all the stress after a long day at work

I don't think it sounds any more 'trance' than 'Jaguar' did... :)

on the probably less expected 313-tip, really cheeck ian o'brien mix for
jazzanova - around now for more than a month.. straight 909 driven, with
detroit synths - very reminding to mayday's mix of inner city' praise

Yeah, a very epic tune, I've been playing this a lot... the Ayro mix is
great too in a little more laid-back style...

and do the cats think of the return of the martian on rp-11 ?
? the night of the wolf?

I like it - it's not as 'instant classic' as some of the others in the
series but I think it's good. The Vintage Future 12 is good too, but the
Dark Energy 12 is the pick of the new bunch for me...

and oh, i can seriously tip harco pront!
just expect the unexpected, it's deeply funky

Yeah, big tip for the 'Skifo' EP! Playing it every day... also the Aardvarck
'Donkeyboy' on Music for Speakers with Harco Pront remix is dope...

(313) Aphex Twin? Ectomorph?

2002-11-15 Thread Arne Weinberg
Hello folks!

I have a record that comes without any info about the artists and therefore I
would like to ask all you trainspotters out there for a little bit of help.

It is a 12 in clear vinyl with a big coloured Radioactivity sign on the
labels. There is an info on the cover that tells: Mururoa - Stop it! All
profit made from this EP by participating artists and record companies will be
donated to charities that can help end nuclear weapons testing
On the back of the cover are more infos in french, italy, english and dutch
I really think that there are 4 different artists on this record like the cover
also saysfrom different places around the world ( The hague, Detroit,
London, Rome) have joined together
One track sounds really like Ectomorph and another like Aphex Twin!!

Does anybody know this record and can tell me more about it? Artists?

Basic Level bring you the final instalment of the year, and what better way
to wind up for the year than an exclusive live set from Shawn Rudiman.
Pittsburgh - based Shawn Rudiman got his start in music as one half of the
ebm/industrial group THD which formed in 1989. The duo released four
full-length albums on various labels including Cleopatra in the U.S. and
Hard Records in Europe. In 1997, Shawn headed into a new musical direction
inspired by the new sounds he had heard coming from Detroit and Europe. In
1998, he helped start a short - lived label named Hypervinyl and most
recently has developed a new label, Technoir, with partner Juan Allen. He
has also released killer twelves on minimalist stalwart Dan Bell's 7th City
 label.

Shawn is most known in the midwest for his jaw dropping live shows which
consist mainly of the vintage analog audio gear he has collected during the
years. His performances have been known to last over five hours in length
and are largely improvised on the spot.

Shawn is one of the most underrated live acts in the business, and drops in
to Glasgow for an exclusive UK date before setting off on his European tour.
Not to be missed. Residents Jamie Jonmac are on hand to provide manual

Think of Manuel Göttsching's masterpiece E2-E4. 60 minutes full of

without being boring!

Classical music on the other hand is a whole different kettle of fish

(313) New Theo Parrish 12

2002-10-07 Thread Arne Weinberg
I think Minto George already posted it yesterday or on saturday but I really
have to give it an extra special kick
I received the new Sound Signature 12 of Theo Parrish today and it is so
beautiful...
really amazing! One of Theo's best records in my personal opinion.

Theo Parrish - Solitary flight / Sound Signature 016

Solitary flight sounds like an very old movie soundtrack with nice strings
and piano combined with the typical rhythm work of Theo Parrish
Dellwood II is more in the normal style of Theo Parrish, means a little bit
more jazzy and minimal. Also great, even though it doesn't reach the quality of
the A-side IMO.

Stinkworx is definitely from North Carolina! 100% sure!
And it should stay an enigma who it exactly is. hehehehe
Stinkworx is also on the list, so he/she will lift the secret if he/she wants
to!

[313] New Transmat artist?

2002-09-17 Thread Arne Weinberg
Hello folks!

I received a new 12 on Transmat by an artist I have never heard of before
he is called Rodenbush and I really like the deeper track on the b-side.
Can anybody tell me more about this artist?

I also heard the next Transmat 12 by John Arnold today. really great stuff!
On the A side is a very nice brazil jazzy house track that reminds me on the
last John Beltran album. Really sweet! And on the other side are two tracks
that sound a little bit like some Recloose stuff the winner is definitely
side A.

Cheers,

Arne

Watch out for the upcoming new Interdimensional Transmissions 12.

Again some brilliant dark and funky electro from the crew

Just thought I should report an amazing party that went down on 9/11 at the
Baltic Room in Seattle. Module played a very dark(for seattle)live set that
got all us west coasterners out of our shell, then Brendon played a two hour
live set, need I say more? This was probably the best party, barring Random
Noise Generation, that Ive seen in Seattle. Both sets can be downloaded off
of www.robotrash.com. The links are at the bottom of that page. Hopefully
a little of its vibe will transfer through those wires.

 enjoy!
