Re: [313] Help ! -- track ID - 80's electro fun track w. vocal...
There's also a very nice bootleg that was available from Ibadan that layed the "The System" vocal over Kerri Chandler's "Atmosphere." The vocal and that track really work well together. There's even a version of the vocal in Spanish. Re: [313] Question: Final Scratch
I would imagine that a large part of FS's appeal for Saunderson is that he wouldn't need to carry a heavy box of records. As I understand, Kevin has a bad knee and is unable to carry his own record box to gigs anymore. A little laptop with the horsepower required for FS weighs about 4 to 5 lbs. Your average flight case with a 3 hour gigs' worth of records is about 40 lbs. -Eli Bingham SF, CA, US - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] Juan Atkins in SF
Well, with all the talk back and forth about Juan, I thought I'd let you all know that he threw DOWN Thursday night in SF. Best set that I've seen him play, period. Classic techno, hard techno, new house, old house, disco, classics, and electro, dropped and mixed with remarkable skill. He even played E.S.G. "Moody"! The party was still packed and pumpin' at 2am when I left, and I heard it was still going strong at 3am. [313] kms afterparty (was Re: [313] Re: DEMF 2002: The Sexy Adventures of Carol Marvin313)
I was at the KMS party. The highlight of the festival for me personally, I guess. But that lineup isn't right...I arrived around 2am and D-wynn was on...Doc Martin followed, and then Master Reese...Derrick May played last. Not sure about the lineup in the front as I was enthralled in the back all night, but I know that Gene Farris played in there. Coxy wasn't around. Wasn't he supposed to be "sick?" Jim Masters came through though - he was stumbling around on the dancefloor for awhile trying to pick up ladies. The Works was serving a mean "cranberry juice with extra ice" until 7am. Is this normal in the D? -Eli On Wed, Feb 20, 2002 at 03:51:36PM -0500, Matthew L. [313] New winter mix available online
Hello folks! Winter is upon us here in the Northern Hemisphere, and we all need something to listen to while we huddle indoors. With that in mind, I've once again uploaded my latest mix CD for your MP3 enjoyment. As usual, I've included a tracklisting. You can get the mix at: http://ugrad.csua.berkeley.edu/~lye/elib18.mp3 There's also: http://ugrad.csua.berkeley.edu/~lye/elib16.mp3 http://ugrad.csua.berkeley.edu/~lye/elib17.mp3 if you missed them before. For those in the SF area, don't forget our Kenny Larkin party on Saturday Dec 8th. Info at 415.820.4876, or email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks, Eli B P.S. Yes, this mix does have 313 content. --- BEGIN TRACKLISTING --- DJ Eli B - Deep In Winter 2001 1. Soul Designer (aka Fabrice Lig) - Detroit Sound - FComm This is from Fabrice's "EP1," which I believe is his first full release for FComm. My favorite of all his latest records, this release is his usual beautiful detroit influenced melodic techno-house, but with much better production than anything before it. 2. Bushwacka! - Zebidee - Oblong This EP might make my top ten of the year, despite its nostalgic old-school feel. Both sides are included on this mix. This one is more of a mid-set track that sounds like 3 tracks in one: a big chord melodic number, an acid house track, and a funky techno track. 3. Jamie Anderson - In Two Minds - NRK The Jamie Anderson album rocks and there are two tracks from it on this mix. This particular cut is a spacey techno/garage hybrid. 4. Technasia - Force - Technasia Just love these guys...I'm sure you've heard this one before. 5. DJ Sneak - Juicy Beats - Magnetic DJ Sneak's new label is 3 for 3 so far - all good bangin' funky stuff with a decidedly raw edge. 6. Baruka - Play It Loud (Original) - Monoid Eukahouse re-released the long mix of this awhile back, but Monoid had the sense to put out the original which I prefer. The new remixes on this double are pretty much cack though. 7. Carsten Fietz - Fly By Wire - Choke I've been sleeping on the Choke stuff for awhile but not anymore. This is a nice big bass track, really evil. Most of the stuff on the label is in a lighter, spacier vein. 8. Tim Xavier & Charles Little - Jackie's Chant - Contaminated Surprisingly good techno tool from Contaminated, good pitched down that is (i think this is at minus 5). Chunky tribal techno with some light chords and chanting sounds late in the track. 9. Steve Rachmad - Sinosphere - Sino Technasia's new sublabel Sino has put out a blinder here, definitely one of my tracks of the year. Deep, eerie tribal techno with some gorgeous sounds. Not too little, not too much, just rght. Look for a new Sino soon by John Tejada with a Rachmad remix. 10. Octave One feat. Ann Saunderson - Black Water (E Dancer Dub) - Concept UK E Dancer remixes Black Water, already stunning, and takes it on a super dark, late night tip. 11. Bushwacka! - Chorus - Oblong Off the same Oblong 12", this is an old school piano anthem redone for the new millenium with gorgeous production. Those who don't like a little obvious emotion in their techno should probably skip it. 12. Jamie Anderson - Puesta De La Sol - NRK Again from the new album...More garage/tech from the man. 13. Gemini - Body - NRK Really old Gemini classic from '97 that I found lying in the back of a bin. Every track on this EP is ace...this is one of the particularly deep cuts. 14. Soha - Gabbeh - Basic Julien Jabre and DJ Gregory as Soha are making some of the best deep house around right now, period. Their Africanism record blew my head off when Derrick May played it at the KMS afterparty in Detroit, and I've been a fan ever since. The latest Basic is some extremely deep, trippy stuff. The quality of the sounds here cannot be emphasized enough... The flipside of this record is the best cut but I like this one as well. 15. 4Hero - Fleur (King Britt remix) - Talkin' Loud Just awesome. Another track of the year. Can't really describe it. 16. Shake - Stereotype/Detroit State of Mind - Frictional Crazy abstract breaks and downtempo to settle your mind out at the end... Shake is the man! He performed amazingly well at the DEMF despite being crippled by multiple sclerosis. --- END TRACKLISTING --- - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] speaking of hawtin... (was Re: [313] Hawtin + Aphex Twin -> NY Times)
No one mentioned anything about his set at Nikita last Friday in SF. I just wanted to drop a quick mention of it, and I must say, as someone who has critized Richie's more recent (read: '99 up to present) sets, I was really impressed. About an hour to an hour and half of bangin' (but not the drumcode-stiff type bangin', more inna funky vein), and then almost two hours of beautiful, deep, minimal, bliss. One of the most emotional sets I've seen him play...There was actual melody! And no 909 stupidity. I really felt like he's started trying to take people on a journey again. I thanked him for it afterwards and he said that he was really into it that night as well. Maybe the final scratch thing has had a positive effect on his programming...it was definitely reminding me of the richie of old... -eli - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[313] speaking of sylvester... (was Re: [313] song id)
...i wonder if anyone could comment or shed some light on an old 12" that i found the other day. i sometimes make a habit of trolling the used soul and rock vinyl bins in out the way record stores - you'd be amazed what you can find sometimes. in this case i was in the rasputin's in beautiful downtown pleasant hill, california. along with some $1 morris day and the time twelves (ahem), i found an old sylvester record. its a double a side 12" on "megatone records," apparently based in the castro in san francisco. its dated 1985. one side is "take me to heaven," the other side is called "sex." now, its definitely inna '80s eurodisco stylee - cheap unsequenced drum machine programs and live synth playing. the production is by "ken kessie and morey goldstein" (?) with remix by "ian levine" (???). really really long tracks with typical campy sylvester vocals, but tons of great '80s synth basslines and over-the-top linndrum drumrolls to sample. the funny part is that "take me to heaven" is ludicrously fast for a disco record. i played it with house and it came in at -8, so i'm guessing its close to 140bpm (but with sylvester being the way he is, at -8 he sounds just fine). anyway, anyone know what the deal with this record is? who are these people? who the heck is "megatone records"? i've seen one other record on megatone and it was a patrick cowley production, something i-f would drop. sorry for the sorta non-313 content... -eli On Fri, Nov 02, 2001 at 10:51:58AM -0500, Sean Deason wrote: > Sounds like Sylvester. but dont you mean "...mighty real"?? > sean deason > > -Original Message- > From: Samuel Hobbs [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Friday, November 02, 2001 10:49 AM > To: 313@hyperreal.org > Subject: [313] song id > > > just wondering if anyone can remember the name of the > disco singer that sang the song that goes "you make me > feel...so real!" i think it is on salsoul > records. > -sam > > __ > Do You Yahoo!? > Find a job, post your resume. > http://careers.yahoo.com > > - > To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > - > To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

i have a white label of the remix so i have no idea who did it. it's pretty darn good. one side is just the original track, in fact its pressed off the original master (says kms70 in the runout). the other side (kms77 i believe) takes out the tribal elements and beefs up the bassline a lot. gives it more of a house feel i guess. still has that goofy breakdown. -eli On Fri, Oct 05, 2001 at 09:57:47AM +0200, Jongsma, K.J. wrote: > One of my favorite Gary Martin track is Casa Cougat on KMS. well, i was there for his whole set, a blinding one by the way, far superior to any of the ho-hum sets that he's played at 1015. of course i can't identify any of the more faceless stuff, but some of the tracks that did get a big response were: marco carola - 7th question - question mr sliff (aka adam beyer) - jelly tracks - jericho electric deluxe - electric deluxe - plus8 mr. g - g's strings - duty free some of the stuff of the player label, but i don't know those tracks well enough - think a housier, slightly more cheesed up version of user that discount baby record on playhouse, can't remember the name marco carola - drumcode 22.5 the thomas heckmann remix of join in the chant my memory is getting hazy - those are the ones that i definitely still remember. that party was DAMN HOT - decibel is in serious need of a ventilation system. i saw a few of the e'd up folk who were looking in serious danger of heatstroke. as for shopping, i think you can buy almost all of the above on groovetech. :) -eli On Thu, Jul 05, 2001 at 10:10:47AM -0700, Bulger, Tim wrote: > I caught Richie here in SF doing a DJ set over the weekend and he totally > destroyed the place. hi folks! this is a longshot but i'm REALLY hurtin' for this one. i saw teddy douglas from the basement boys twice in the last two nights here in sf. what an awesome dj, and a super friendly guy to boot. unfortunately i was unable to get a proper id on a absolutely slammin' record that he played on both nights. here is what i know: the title is something like "i wanna be you." the record has a black sleeve with red lettering, and a black label with red lettering. one side of the sleeve said " ... records." its a big tune, based around a strong male vocal and a stab pattern. the only other description that i can give is that the vocal is sort of a stuttered shout that hits at the same beats as the stab. it also sounds pretty old. -eli

derrick may in sf...
...tore it up last saturday night to a packed, up for it room at 550 barneveld. one of the best sets i've seen, period. the man is at the top of his game. juan atkins threw down some interesting records afterward, but the crowd had really thinned out by that point and he didn't have much to work with. -e
Re: RE: [313] Focus Commercial no ufos?
I have a vinyl version of an old network comp (retrotechno: detroit emotions electric) which includes a very strange remix of no ufos. way way too much 808 through the unsequenced delay box on that one. :) -e On Wed, Nov 15, 2000 at 11:18:18AM -0500, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > It's not the original that was released 15 years ago, it's sort of a > 'modernized edit'. laurent garnier live in sf
i went down the justice league this past saturday to check out laurent garnier's live set. he hadn't played in sf in over three years, and i'd been kicking myself for missing him the last time. i still wish that he'd come out here to play one of his legendary marathon dj sets, but a live gig is exciting nonetheless. spundae productions chose to throw this event at the justice league...to my mind, a somewhat questionable decision. garnier's music is BIG anthemic love parade techno, and the sound system at the jl simply is not up to the task of reproducing it - the thing just has no "oomph." i'm not sure what else would have been available that night anyway - 1015 was hosting josh wink. another problem is that the jl becomes very uncomfortable when crowded, and garnier got a very big turnout. i have never been shoved so many times in one night. all that aside, however, he put on a fantastic performance with a fairly minimal stage setup. garnier stayed stage-left behind a flat panel display, some sort of sequencer/sampler combo, and a mixing board. the sax player was front and center, and a keyboard player stood stage right. as far as i could tell, everything was done live a la the advent - garnier sequenced the music with mute/unmute and directed the backup musicians with hand signals. no dat tapes here! the only triggered part of the performance was the video backdrop tha seemed keyed to certain parts of the performance. garnier warmed up with mellower material, working in an electro version of "greed" and a beautiful montage of "acid eiffel" and "the man with the red face." after a very enthusiastic response from a crowd that was probably about half european (including a six foot eight fellow that danced around the entire night wrapped in a huge french flag), garnier declared "we're going to get a big harder now." i'm not going to bother to describe this stuff, you just have to see and hear for yourself. all i can say is that its amazing what techno can do when it has a BASSLINE. the energy of the crowd and the band was in top form...what struck me immediately was the coordination between the live musicians and the electronic elements controlled by garnier. the crowd showered garnier and his band with love and we were treated to not one but TWO very long encores. as garnier put it, "it took me three years to come back to san francisco. now i remember why i came." here's to garnier's return sooner rather than later. -e

just wanted to drop a quick note to give mad respect to smallfish and their crew. they hooked me up more than any other record store in london, showed incredible depth of musical knowledge, and were the only people that i met in the whole of england that were as nice as tom churchill :>. their store rocks and they got me the DSR record on warp for a fiver! so go check em out! plus8 in sf
three years ago, i saw richie hawtin for the first time in a sweltering loft space at 117 minna st. 700 ravers crammed into a low ceilinged room designed for about 450 people, with the only ventilation provided by a single window all the way at the back and a couple of fans at the front. at several points in the night it was literally raining condensed sweat from the ceiling. that night, richie played for five hours, and forever changed the way that i saw music. he played _everything_ - from warped aciiid to the manic electro of j saul kane to the raw aggression of speedy j to clattering tribal house to concept-style minimalism to soulful detroit, with all points in between. his mixing was smooth and adventurous, but like any good dj he seemed to know that it wasn't so much how you played but what, and when. no matter how hot it seemed, you were literally compelled to keep dancing. "richie is a god," a friend muttered as we stumbled out at 7am. and no, i was sober thank you. the flier for the party, appropriately called "a diet for the sick," identified richie only with the name plastikman and the ubiquitous alien logo. at the time i owned the two plastikman albums available at the time, and was fascinated by the possibilities they presented. what sort of person would produce such alien music, and what would they do in a live setting? the mystery implied the unexpected. i'm still not sure of everything that i heard that night. fast forward to the year 2000 and "Decks, FX, and 909." the mystery of plastikman is gone, replaced with the bald visage of "richie hawtin." despite its pretentions as "serious art," the new de909 angle is mostly a triumph of slick marketing and 21st century multimedia capitalism - buy the cd, buy the vinyl, go to the show, etc. etc. etc. - most of all, buy into richie's image. in the web business where i earn my living, we call this "branding." earlier this year i saw the de909 show live for the first time, and i was impressed - the shock of the new has its power. but i remember remarking afterwards that i couldn't recall a single track that richie had played, save nitzer ebb. last night at the plus8 classics show in sf, i was much less impressed. john acquaviva did an admirable job of warming up, though some of the music he played earlier in the night was pretty darn cheesy (its john a. though, and somehow he can get away with records other people can't). he ended up providing the highlight of the entire night for me - his last record was red planet's "stardancer." hearing that at top volume on 1015's sound system was _almost_ worth the fifteen dollar admission price. richie stepped up to the decks at 2 am and proceeded to simply wallop the crowd for two hours straight (and presumably a third, though me and my numbed friends had left by then). technically, richie is a joy to watch. his dj technique is unparalleled - almost every record is manipulated beyond recognition through fx and elaborate mixing tricks. just watching his fingers move about the mixer and fx unit is entertaining. but the musical end result of all this fuss and bother leaves a lot to be desired. in many ways, i think that richie is a victim of his own sucess - having developed such a purebred sound to accompany his aggressive marketing and packaging techniques, he finds himself unable to experiment or push himself beyond the image of "harder than hard" that he has created. he has sold his soul to pure technique, but pure technique is ultimately numbing. without rough edges, without surprise, without hints of contradiction and feminine energies to leaven the unrelenting attack, there really isn't much to care about. all tension and no release makes jack a dull boy. and in a way, this is an inevitable result of catering to a very mainstream crowd - they want exactly what they expected when they bought into the "richie hawtin" package. as a friend put it, "when richie plays anything besides total pounding nazi music they just don't care." i found it interesting to see a whole lot of acquaintences of mine from three years ago at the plus8 show. but not the folks that i saw richie with the first time - these were the kids that would complain and put on an aphrodite tape or a happy hardcore record when i would try to get them to listen to some jeff mills or kenny larkin. there they were, up front and center and jumping up and down to the pounding beat. "richie is a god," they told me with extremely dilated pupils shining. hmmm. -eli
Re: [313] No Subject
i think the word you might be looking for is "participate"... if so, its a phil asher track from a double promo 12" on estereo. "phlash 3000" was the name of the double pack. i don't know if it was ever released, but originally it supposed to come out as two seperate 12's. the track you want is on part 1. the rest of it is a little too "noodly english wannabe jazz house" but that track is, as you say, hot. -eli On Thu, Aug 24, 2000 at 01:36:01PM -0400, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > on the download from the DEMF, Hannah plays this track that goes something > like this; "whatever you do , don't be late...don't be too late...something > something don't hesistate" it's Black men singing and it's hot. > > > Anybody know, I want that track. Re: Subject: Sv: (313) ID help
If the vocal side has a sample saying something about "house - house music," then... It's called Basstronic, by the Unknown DJ. Not sure of the label name but the cat # is DYF-016. A personal favorite of mine. I picked up a new copy last December here in San Francisco, so it is likely still in print. Distribution may be very poor however. I bought the record from Open Mind Music on Divisadero, so you might try giving them a call at 415.621.2244. They regularly get in new copies of all that old LA electro stuff. -e p.s. embarassingly I used to mix the instrumental version of this with the acapella mix of Nu Nu by Lidell Townsell. Now if anyone remembers THAT record I'll be really surprised. :) On Tue, 28 Sep 1999, environ wrote: > Regarding DJ Unknown/Unknown DJ and Techno-Cut Records... > > Does anyone know if/where these are available as re-issues? > There's a track by Unknown DJ/DJ Unknown on the label that is gorgeous, > I've been looking for it forever.
