RE: (313) Laurent Garnier @ The End London, 31/12/22008 9 hrs!
Hey Martijn, I went to this night so thanks for the link. From some of the tracks listed, it looks like the music on the night was better than I remember. I really can't recall hearing the Stooges or KLF in there ! I'm not the biggest Garnier fan but thought I should have one last night at the End. There was such a great atmosphere in there, it's a shame it's going to close. When it goes off in there it's up there with the best of them. I spoke to one girl who'd travelled down from Glasgow just because she loved the atmosphere in there so much. If only there was one last Mills appearance down there ... Re: (313) Metro Area, John Tejada on Fabric
I like the Metro Area Fabric mix. It has some cheesy talking from Morgan Darshan at he beginning of the mix which is unnecessary, but the mix itself is enjoyable. Even though a lot of the records played are from the late seventies, the mix still retains that 'clean' Metro Area sound. I noticed a lack of variety in his set, like the overall feel never changed. There were no moments where the sound gets a little darker, just everything plodding along in the same vein. Sometimes I think DJs think too much on the overall style without thinking about making people dance. Technically he was faultless, but just uninspiring. Still, to the extent that the way the do this obviously is in step with the latest advancements in the way humans consume media (why should this surprise us? They don't hit me in the heart like the best American hip hop, but they sound like themselves, not like they spent their youths in a pub listening to Biggie on their walkman, fantasizing about walking the mean streets of NYC. I'm very picky about hip hop as well. When it's on, it's Shakespeare-caliber word play backed by beats that make you want to cry. When it's not, well, it's like 99% of all musical culture -- crap. But to top it all, the engineers who designed and installed it about 3 months ago, came down on Friday night. Since then they've done it with a lot of their regular guests - basically Mills and the Belleville Three. (313) RE: Derrick May
That's mad, I didn't enjoy Bicknell's set at all. I agree about the small venue though. I'd previously only heard him at places like Fabric, Turnmills etc always felt that he was never as good as I was expecting. At P.P I was dancing right next to where he was DJing, I finally realised why he such a good DJ. Let him play what he wants in a small club with a loud system you're laughing ! He knows how to work those EQs is quite handy with a Pioneer mixer. Obviously the tune selection was dope too! Btw - he was shaking everyone's hand that night thanked my girlfriend for dancing all through his set. Then at the end he said you want one f*cking more, everyone shouted one f*cking more!! Then he dropped Lil'Louis 'Blackout.' I know it doesn't have much to do with the 'Falling Up' thread but I'm enjoying reminiscing anyway ;o) Paul Kendrick [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], 313@hyperreal.org .comcc: Fax to: 17/02/06 16:08 Subject: RE: (313) RE: falling up : cover or remix? / Derrick May Yeah that's the night. We are fortunately not advertiser supported, which means we are sort of living in a fools' paradise. ;) well, they get their funds of my tax money! So they are supported by governement money, collected from the citizens. No advertisment. But as I understand it, they have to reach a 6% market share to get some more funds or something. So what they want to get more people listening to their station, and that's probably why they are a bit more on the commercial side of things as they used to be five years ago. In the '97-'98 period they had every week a Dave Clarke show (when he was still a great dj, with a wide selection in music). And he once dedicated a whole show on Chicago Booty (Dj Funk, Deeon, etc.). That was awesome. Last year they had dj Godfather over, but this is the last half hour I remember as being great. They fill their time mostly with overrated hyped up electro inspired house with the same cold impotent synth sounds all the way thru. Ah well... hoping for a better time to come. Re: (313) Digital Soul Party/Detroit House Festival/Jeff Mills @ The End
I was at The End on Saturday to witness Mills absolutely rock the club! He was on top form, mixing up Disco House in with the Techno. It was the most varied set I've heard him play (other than Plastic People). The system in there was sooo loud. He'd have two records in the mix, the system sounded like it was operating at it's maximum level .. then the next record would drop it got even louder. Great atmosphere in there as well. I would recommend anyone that can make it to go to this : SUPERCONDUCTOR – 3rd BIRTHDAY Friday 23rd July @ MISSION, Heaton’s Court, Leeds. 22:00-06:00 Tickets are still available for Superconductor’s 3rd Birthday party, kicking off at the Mission in two weeks time over two rooms with: JEFF MILLS (3 decks, Roland 909 and DVJ-X1 set) ROBERT HOOD ANDREW WEATHERALL DAN MOORE, ALEX BOWEN, SCOTT McGILL, TONY ADAMSON Jeff Mills will now also be performing with the new Pioneer DVJ-X1 during his three hour set, which enables the DJ to manipulate DVD’s in exactly the same way as they would music. Jeff premiered this new technology at the Sonar festival this year in Barcelona and will now be showcasing the equipment at Superconductor this month. Find our more info from the Superconductor website: www.superconductormsuic.co.uk Tickets for this simply unmissable party are still on sale at the usual outlets (details below). Don’t miss what could be a once in a lifetime opportunity to catch two of Detroit’s original pioneers and visionaries side by side, for what should be an unforgettable night of the finest electronic music that Leeds is ever likely to see. __ This email has been scanned by the MessageLabs Email Security System. __

(313) Jeff Mills comp on Azuli
This 'Choice' comp got released yesterday I have to say it's excellent! I picked it up on CD, but I think i'm gonna have to pick it up on vinyl as well. From the sleeve notes it looks like a few of the tracks are pretty rare. There's some cool disco on CD 1, this disc juts gets better as it goes on. I guess most 313 heads know the tracks on CD 2 already, but every one of them is worthy of being on the comp. RE: (313) Sonar 2004: It Rocked!!!!!
I caught more of their set than I'd have liked to. I thought they performed well live, but I would have been happy just to hear 'Unfinished Sympathy' maybe a couple of others. Massive Attack definitely aren't what you want on Saturday night at Sonar. They went off I was quite relieved, then they came out for an encore - another 3 tracks!! Re: (313) Sonar 2004: It Rocked!!!!!
I too thought Mills' set was amazing. I loved the way he used the old footage of Donna Summer, Chic Sugarhill Gang - it was like they were performing live with him. He played 'We are the Robots' as well - that was a definite highlight. I don't hear enough Kraftwerk in clubs! Mills was in the local record shop as well, signing new 7' records handing them out. Surprisingly, it wasn't even that busy in the shop. G. Williams, Graham To: 313@hyperreal.org [EMAIL PROTECTED]cc: m Fax to: Subject: (313) Sonar 2004: It Rocked! 23/06/2004 23:20 Good Bits Francois K Sonar Day Friday This was great; a great introduction to Sonar by day, Francois K banged it out, on such a hot day as well. Hey played records for a while then Mutabaruka ranted on for a while, kind of lost interest in this bit, but he finished and Francois K changed the music, he played Star Dancer and the place went mad! He also played Strings of Life and naturally the place went mad again. Richie Hawtin V's Ricardo Villalobos Sonar Nite Having never seen Hawtin play anywhere, and after hearing people rant on about Villalobos, I decided to check this out. Naturally our group was late in arriving at Sonar by nite, we arrived in about 1:45am, so missed the start, wandered over to the room they where on. A massive room, It was great, totally blown away by there set. I would definitely go see them again. Matthew Dear Sonar Nite Friday I can't really remember much about Matthew Dear, but I do remember really enjoying it and having a great time, although there seemed to be some small technical difficulties with the sound, but it didn't really matter. Agoria Agoria banged it out, but not the usual boring hard techno, again can't remember the tunes he played but the place was going mad, I just remember having a good time. Jeff Mills Sonar Nite Saturday Jeff Mills was amazing, I've seen Mills play in Dublin and London, but this was my favourite of them all, I half expected not to be impressed with Mills, but he was brilliant, he played a few classics like The Bells etc. Halfway through his set the Sonar Model (one of the faces of Sonar 2004) came on stage with a camera to take pictures of the crowd (although probably no film in the camera), the place was jammed at this stage so many more people there than Friday nite. Mills kept playing although he didn't seem distracted by her, but he certainly had a quick look at her... He was also playing the 909 and brought one to the front of the stage and got on his knees and played it in front of everyone. It looked great and sounded great. Totally impressed by him! They also had 3 cameras looking at the decks on the main stage so you could see from the back of the room... Miss Kitten Sonar Nite Saturday She played twice over the weekend, on Thursday and then again on Saturday nite to fill in for Carl Cox (definitely a bonus). Miss Kitten was great, can't remember the tunes she played with the exception of Stock Exchange at the end of her set. She rocked the place and was dancing around the decks and appeared to be having a great time! David Carretta Sonar Nite Saturday Only saw a small bit of Carretta, again he was rocking the outdoor part of the Sonar by nite. DJ Hell Sonar Nite Saturday Only saw a small bit of Hell, again he was rocking the outdoor part of the Sonar by nite. SonarLab (I think it was the Lab...) Sonar Day Saturday On Saturday afternoon, it was pretty relaxed in the Sonar Village, But at around 5 or 6 in the afternoon the skies where getting dark and you could hear the reliable sound of the 4, 4 coming from the SonarLab tent ( I think it was the SonarLab tent..), about 15 minutes before it started to rain, people started crowding into the tent, the kick drum was like a magnet the place was going mad, it was like 3:00am in the morning, it was jammed, then it started to rain, which made it even busier, definitely one of the highlights of Saturday afternoon was seeing the tent fill so fast and seeing everyone just going for it... I can't remember the exact time, somewhere between 4:30 - 6:00 but it was either DJ Nudge DJ Paul Naza (I could be wrong here.) Bad Bits Dave Clarke Sonar Nite Saturday Boring Boring Boring! He was $hit! I don't think e even smiled! Why was he the last DJ on Saturday nite?

As it's a bit quiet on 313 traffic today : On the other hand .. I see it as using the skills you've got to add something different to the mix, delivering the records in a new way ( in a way that most DJs can't.) I appreciate the skill involved enjoy the showmanship.

I think the visuals for the whole show were amazing. It was very cool how they used all the artwork from their album sleeves, it worked so well with the music. After all these years, they came out proved that their still the Daddies (or Granddaddies even!) Kraftwerk tracks have been on shuffle in my head since Saturday. Best thing i've witnessed during 10 yrs of enjoying electronic music - i doubt it will ever be bettered. I'm going to surmise that because Goldenvoice (Coachella festival promoters) probably paid them what they were asking, they probably figured Oh, Movement, another festival, we'll ask the same amount. What's ironic to me is that if you go to Kraftwerk.COM, you'll notice a lot of updates to it - there's interactive pages (if you will - it's all Flash) for lots of the well-known songs, and there's also a link called Photo. Click on it and there's only *ONE* photo. Guess where it's taken? On the other hand, if it costs (*waves hands in the air*) $2.1 million to put on the festival without Kraftwerk, and $2.2 million to put it on with them, wouldn't it have been worth it to spend the extra bucks??? I really wish Derrick May had tried harder - they're touring this year, it really was probably their only chance to get them for Movement, ever. (As for Mr. Eno - is he out of his mind? Eno never plays live. Maybe he'd come to give a lecture ... ) - Greg

RE: (313) Mills
I had my doubts about the whole DVD thing at previous Losts, but now I think it's a good idea. On Saturday he did build the anticipation by appearing on screen before he appeared behind the decks. I also quite enjoyed the Random Noise Generation segment in the club (even though I didn't think much of it when I watched the DVD?!) I think Mills can take this further by recording new, unseen segments of him mixing in the studio then using them in clubs. If he doesn't vary what the audience sees then it would become boring / predictable. He could also get other guests to record segments, then he could have whoever he liked appearing as a guest during his mix. It gives him more options I can see him developing the whole idea further.
