Looks absolutely fantastic! This will be on regular rotation in the coming
months.

Andy seems to have the kind of record collection where if you go to his house
before going out to the club, you end up staying there and not going out to the
club ;)

Hey there!
Signal Records in Logan Square on Diversey had quite a bit of house and techno
the one time I went there. They are somewhat new. They have a second location
too I believe.

There is also Hyde Park Records if you want to venture down to the south side.
They would have mostly house over techno.

Technotourist activities could include going to the site of the original
Warehouse and the honorary Frankie Knuckles Way, and trying to find where the
Muzic Box was :) Cheers!

Great recommendations all around! Glad to read all of the talk about Strand.
They don't really miss.

Suburban Knight's rework of Prince's Erotic City, Derotic City is pretty fun to
my ears: https://detroittechno.bandcamp.com/album/listening-systems

Also like the sound of Mike Schommer's brand new one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9nzY22thQY

Stumbled upon this MM mix from a few years ago the other day that I didn't know
existed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c04U4MY6lVg It is a longer version of
a similar track on the digital version of Taken Away.

And have also really been enjoying Brian Kage's stuff lately:
https://michigandermusic.bandcamp.com/ His productions vary a lot in terms of
style which I like. He has also done a lot with Luke Hess as Reference, Omar S
and has been mastering quite a few Detroit records as of late including those
from Norm Talley and Delano Smith.

I'm by no means an authority on Strand, but they had a release on Frictional
and one of those tracks "Zephyr" was also on the True People comp as Kech and
B. Bonds back in the day. That was my intro to them in any case. It looks like
Brian Bonds was replaced by Brian Boyer along the way.

OK, at the risk of sounding out of touch...who is Strand...? it says that they
are from Detroit and have been at it since 91..I have the Strand releases on
Delsin but I didn't realize they were from Detroit...

Yo.

New Strand https://strand313.bandcamp.com/album/silicon

Newish Russ Gabriel on Ferox.
https://russgabriel.bandcamp.com/album/off-centre. I like his other recent
stuff, but this is back on top form for me. Like he is drifting somewhere
in between his '00s less techy output (of which I am a huge admirer) and
the recent return to techno.

Some Nuron releases I'd missed. https://nuron.bandcamp.com/music. There is
also a new 2x12" Likemind reissue that I need to pick up before it goes

Placid Angels - Touch the Sky
https://figure-music.bandcamp.com/album/touch-the-earth (note, for some
reason the digital release is priced much higher at Bandcamp than other
stores for some reason I am struggling to fathom).

Kyle Hall's MPC Dreams https://kylehall.bandcamp.com/album/mpc-dreams

Urban Tribe reissue (which is incredible)

Loads of other great stuff about presently, but this was the topical stuff

Anyone been scoping on this weird Mancunian 'Ourtime' label at all?
Picked up a nice short lp Unconditional and a trancey release by 'Stark'
called Balance from VU prior an Internet refit. Internet refits are
generally caused by change, techno lists don't generally get on with
change until after it happens, but then Jeff Mills is ok again, etc. For
my own part, there's a nice almost hiphop number I wouldn't have minded
a bit of messin' with, tbh/f.

Also, lookout for Marc Mac with Jah-Maye-Kah

John Beltran had a great year but didn't quite make the list somehow, and

Whenever a new DeepChord record came out, Huck always had it taking up prime
real estate on the wall at Record Time.

Huck was also on the artist selection committee for the 2002 DEMF. If I had to
guess, he is the one who booked DeepChord to play what I think was their first
live set ever at the festival that year.

Also doing it for me, as I'm listening to new shit in another tab, the New
Derek Carr - Pursuit Part 1 and 2 on Sushitech.

It's fucking fantastic, I know most of y'all are already familiar with his work
form the past releases on too many labels i don't feel the need to retype here.

But this album is exactly what we all need to hear and be playing out right
now. Fresh new music with nods to the past, without being overly derivative.

5 1200s, mics, flames or whatever emoji of your choice you need to realize
this is dope music.

And before I forget, Shawn Rudiman and Jordan (of juju and jordan fame) have a
release out on local label "love what you feel" out today, now I'm biased cause
these are my mates, but the music speaks for itself.

Get some! https://itma.bandcamp.com/album/ams-pit-love-what-you-feel-008

First off, I didn't come up with the idea that techno has something to do with
the future, Juan Atkins and then UR came up with these ideas, which means they
have ALWAYS been part of techno. According to the UR manifesto "Techno is a
music based in experimentation; it is music for the future of the human race."
-- Underground Resistance did. See http://www.undergroundresistance.com/

Underground Resistance is a label for a movement. A movement that wants change
by sonic revolution. We urge you to join the resistance and help us combat the
mediocre audio and visual programming that is being fed to the inhabitants of
Earth, this programming is stagnating the minds of the people; building a wall
between races and preventing world peace. It is this wall we are going to
smash. By using the untapped energy potential of sound we are going to destroy
this wall much the same as certain frequencies shatter glass. Techno is a music
based in experimentation; it is music for the future of the human race. Without
this music there will be no peace, no love, no vision. By simply communicating
through sound, techno has brought people of all different nationalities
together under one roof to enjoy themselves. Isn‘t it obvious that music and
dance are the keys to the universe? So called primitive animals and tribal
humans have known this for thousands of years! We urge all brothers and sisters
of the underground to create and transmit their tones and frequencies no matter
how so called primitive their equipment may be. Transmit these tones and wreak
havoc on the programmers!”

Second, raves were often not great--drug overdoses, sexual assault, cops
beating the shit out of people, promoters narking on each other shutting down
each others' parties, promoters throwing parties mostly to sell drugs. I'm not
discounting the positive aspects to say that the rave scene had a terrible dark
side, which is part of why they were able to shut it down as the US morphed
into a full police state following 9/11. (Btw, keep in mind that Joe Biden was
a big supporter of using crackhouse laws to shut down raves.)

Third, I understand dance music and having fun. I just DJed for six hours at a
work xmas party. I know how to make people dance.

But this is NOT a "RAVE DANCE MUSIC" list, it's a DETROIT TECHNO list, and one
of the things that sets Detroit techno apart is that it includes ambient music
and other sounds that are not meant for dancing, a typical example is Robert
Hood "The Exodus". Somehow the idea of "Detroit techno" as something different
and special seems to be lost. Maybe you don't like my idea of Detroit Techno--I
challenge you to come up with your own vision!

Nobody is preventing anyone from enjoying nostalgic house, but I'd like to talk
about MUSIC BASED IN EXPERIMENTATION, music that could help us create a better
FUTURE OF THE HUMAN RACE.

The human race might go extinct. If techno could help create the hope and
vision to work for a better world, than that would be better than dancing until
the world ends. Does everyone just believe shit is so hopeless that there is no
choice but to get as fucked up as possibility and blast that rave music as the
planet slowly poisons itself and commits suicide.

Why has everyone given up on the possibility that art--including "Detroit
techno"--could help inspire us to create a better world? Were the innovators
who created techno WRONG?!

Sly Fox & Corndog Records

2016-03-19 Thread John Sokolowski
About a year ago I was at People's Records in Detroit and came across this
release: https://www.discogs.com/Segv-Appian-Untitled/release/5906370

I am a sucker for most anything dubby and picked it up. Later I learned that
the label, Sly Fox, is actually a Detroit label and that they have a sublabel
called Corndogs. It is an apparent homage to those popular deep fried hot dogs
that people love talk about, and eat, at Movement. All three Corndog releases
are pretty tasty IMHO. The tracks range from dubby, to techno, to deep housey.
The pressing on the first release is all screwed up. You wouldn't want to play
it out but it is fine for home listening:
http://slyfoxrecords.com/catalog/corndogs001

Discogs has links to the full tracks on the second release:
https://www.discogs.com/Various-Corndogs-2/release/5906214

I picked up the third recently and it growing on me:
http://slyfoxrecords.com/catalog/corndogs003

I don't know much about the people behind all of these tracks but hope they
continue putting things out. Cheers!

He also said the B1 track samples his daughter's voice and that it is his

Ok fair enough guys,
Of course I don't make the rules but was just asking what others thought. I
guess this would also open the door for anyone to post anything as long as
they're "familiar" with Detroit artists/sound or feel that what they are
sharing "sounds like it too" etc which I thought may be going a but too far
with it.
If that's the case then an argument could be made for a high percentage of
dance music out there (since it's so subjective), could it not? ;)

RE: (313) Movement, Music and Detroit

2013-05-10 Thread John Sokolowski

One exception is certainly Detroit Threads. I know that folks like Huckaby,
Theo, Kyle Hall, BMG and Juan Atkins personally walk their new releases into
the store. These are some of the names the owner of Threads has mentioned to me
and I am sure there are many others. They usually get about $5 cash for each
12" before it is sold for a few bucks more on the floor. If you are there at
the right time you will see definitely see new Detroit records before they pop
up on places like Juno.

Then there are the records that are released by Detroit labels for the
festival. Many labels have historically timed their new releases to coincide
with the festival. You get those in Detroit first. Some of these are also
exclusive to Detroit, such as Theo's spray painted Skteches, Deepchord DEMF
editions, etc. And then on top of that you have people like KDJ who pull out a
box full of mint copies of Shades of Jae and JAN to sell at the festival. When
it comes to this time of year, I agree with Darnistle's comment that Detroit is
the best place to shop for Detroit techno (and house for me). There is a bunch
of new stuff I have been holding out on because I know it can be had there.

(313) Juan + Moritz = Boarderland

2013-04-05 Thread John Sokolowski
Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald will release a collaborative album called
Borderland through Tresor in June.

The duo will debut the project with a live performance at this year's MUTEK
festival in Montreal. Although their shared production history dates back more
than 20 years (Atkins was the occasional third member in von Oswald's 3MB
project with Thomas Fehlmann, which released an album on Tresor in 1992),
Borderland will be their first album as a duo. The eight-track LP was recorded
during studio sessions in Berlin earlier this year, and will see release as a
series of 12-inches and a full CD album on June 10th, 2013.

(313) Electric Street Orchestra

2012-12-04 Thread John Sokolowski

New release from the UR camp!
http://www.submerge.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=DTR-01A&Category_Code
While a series of projects are slated for release under the Dirt Tech Reck
banner, the first is
the Electric Street Orchestra. Its inspiration is from
those who are called street people.
Those whose voices have been smothered
by mainstream goliathes. Forgotten people from a forgotten
city. It's also
steeped in the Detroit tradition of ignoring the notion of genre and taking a
broad
range of elements and inspiration to create something that is both new
and familiar. Bringing together
a constellation of Detroit's sonic masters.
DTR-01 takes UR's Mad Mike and Agent Chaos, house music
king Theo Parrish,
hip hop/house percussionist Dez Andres, and rock/funk master guitarist Duminie

Deporres, and joins them through the lens of Jeedo's vision of the
future.

Produced by Jeedo for DTR. Additional production and vox by Mad
Mike Banks, Chaos, Theo Parrish,
Dez Andres and Duminie.

Anxiously awaiting a little box in the mail with that Hood 7".

Really enjoying Kate Simko's record on Leftroom with the Jem Cooke vocal.
Catchy little bouncy tune. Also digging the new Life Recorder on Aesthetic

Great hearing about everyone else's newish shiz, keep em coming!

(313) New Detroit releases

2012-10-22 Thread John Sokolowski

Anyone picking up any new Detroit releases (artist or label)? Any
recommendations?

There seems to be a ton out at the moment. Over the last few weeks and months I
have seen new releases from KDJ, Recloose, Andres, Huckaby, Theo, Kyle Hall,
Dwayne Jensen, Deepchord, Rob Hood, Mills, Scan 7, and Jared Wilson. I am sure
there are plenty of others I am missing.

I haven't picked up much lately but am thinking of picking a few things up to
warm up those cold winter nights on the way. Any recommendations would be
appreciated as I have found online clips can be a bit misleading.

Cheers,
John

So not much of a review - the same storm that roared through Chicago and
