Re: [313] Influencial radio shows

2002-06-07 Thread Paul V

Hey Gord and all;

When Chris Twomey had his show on 89.5 (New Power) it was a pretty strong
few hours. It was on Sunday evening as well which made it twice as nice.
One of my faves from that was the Miss Djax guest spot.
He had lots of other great guest as well but my memory draws a blank for
names.

When jungle was more my thing I used to love listening to the Rinse Out show
on 88.1 on Sundays when it had it's 2am - 7am slot. They used to have guests
in from the Saturday before and I used to stay up till 7am listening. It was
worth the sleep loss.

If that's your sentiment, then you'd probably relate to Solvent's track
off the Disco Nouveau compilation called My Radio (it's an ode to an
old radio show on CFNY in Toronto). That one brings me to tears.

Though I didn't grow up listening to Mojo or CFNY (hey, I grew up in
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), I did listen to a couple of very influencial
radio shows when I was a wee lad. When I could stay up for it, Night
Flight from 12-4am on Friday and Saturday nights on CKER used to play
hip-hop and RB. And I don't remember the name of it offhand, but there
was a long running show on the university radio station (CJSR) from
2-4pm on Saturday afternoons which played hip-hop and electro (it was
all the same back then).

Also, if anyone has any mp3s of Mojo's shows, I'd love to hear them.

if anyone hasn't seen these programmes yet (theres 3 in total)
then check out the deep house page (www.deephousepage.com)
where you'll find episodes 12 on the message board section
(home page - message board - viewing room)

highly recommend 1 2, 3's ok but more to do with the UK music scene.

brommage dub on svek (the first one, not the second) is the bomb. if you
want to

hear it it comes in at 24 minutes on my house mix at

the top, it's not on the svek release)
also check out stuff on mosaic records, some is more dubby than others.

Hey, I want to get more of the deep dubby stuff on CD (or mp3's). I have
the Maurizio, Vainqueur, Decay Product, and Deep Chord CD's. That's
pretty much it for store bought CD's. On order, I bought Fluxion: Vibrant
Forms II, and the self titled Rhythm and Sound CD. I found out about
Rythym and Sound because I was listening to this mp3 mix and it dropped
Rhythm and Sound's Imprint in the middle of the set. It was the deepest
dubbiest thing I've heard!--and thankfully the playlist was posted so I'd
know who made it. I saw on the CD that the track is over 16 minutes long!
I just hope that it doesn't have any reggae (sp?) vocals dropped in like
*some* of their songs. And after hearing that Mill's Every dog... has
vocals, I lost hope in just 'buying' any Mill's release that comes
out--because vocals can make techno sound very tacky if not done right.
Well, on the mp3 front, I know DJ Mary has that one great dubby mix at
techno.cz, but too bad I can't find more great mixes online. I think that
deep dub stuff is too underground or obscure for many people, even in
techno--it's too bad.

New paragraph.---

Well, I also bought Vladislav Delay's Anima Cd. From the outset, the
reviews were mixed, but I liked the fact that it was one big 62 minute
electronic music experiment (so said the reviews). I'd like to hear it
for myself though...the clips sounded cool . Personally, I've listened
to a bunch of the Chain Reaction Cd's and I'm
not totally impressed with all of them--some
of them just aren't dubby enough, you know? Hmm, enough rambling, later.

Damn, that show sounds dope! You guys are lucky over there. I can't
imagine seeing anything that in depth on American TV these days. The
closest thing I've seen to something like that was a program on PBS one
time a few years ago. It was a documentary, that I think was of Canadian
origin anyway, about Hip-Hop and Electronic music. In addition to De La
and Grandmaster Flash, they had a brief segment with Derrick May talking
about the Detroit sound. Anyone ever see that? (I apologize if this has
already been discussed to death on this list)

-J

Just watching tonights episode, pretty mad.

Hearing Joey Beltram talk about how he couldn't understand how he got
labeled as a techno
producer after making Energy Flash and that to him it was just a house
tune. I think it
really says a lot for the New York sound of the time. When I interviewed
Frankie Bones he
said that none of the music from Detroit really began to filter into NY
until

the early
90s and that all the early Nu Groove stuff that they all did really was
concieved in
isolation from techno.

I have to say, its a pretty good programme and has been telling it
pretty

much how it was,
even if Derrick May did slate England for labelling music too much :)

2 guys from Ontario, Canada...prolly best known for Spatial Specific
(that

must be 6-7 years ago) which was released via +8. There were a few more
singles back then and another full length a few years ago (Floating in
Shallow Water?). Their stuff is quite dense, very blurred around the
edges/sounds drug-fogged sorta beat laden ambience with some vague
hip-hop
sensibilites tossed in. Reminds me of old DJ Spooky when he was good,
but

not as, um, death-tripped. They recorded under other aliases as well.

Lately these releases seem to be a little hit and miss. The really good ones
are in strong demand so you have to keep an eye out/
I was really impressed with the last Stewart Walker Release, Jeff Mills -
Metropolis and The Latest Pacou album. You have to give Tresor credit for
releasing a number of different sounds instead of keeping hard and driving.
They are steps ahead. They have put out some great Cd's recently as well,
The Dan Bell Mix is amazing as is the Herbert Lets all Make Mistakes mix.

I picked this record up in the shop yesterday and wasn't too impressed.
Is it just that release or what? I have heard this group talk very highly
of Tresor, so that's why I was confused...

On the other hand the new release from Mikeal Jonson was pretty sweet and
also aan EP called killer. That one is bad as hell (for all you hard

human feel, you can hear him mixing and touching the records, some of the
double work he does is amazing. This is an alltime favorite. I was listening
to it so loud in my discman on the subway the other day that some lady came
over and told me turn it down. I was s into it.

I really want the Vinyl version , the Pacou track is outstanding.

  speaking of cim ...

 Yes, let's.

I wanted to post a My 313 Year post last December, but I ended up in
the hospital instead, so it never happened.

If I had, I was going to say that the best two records I heard all last
year
both came from 313 listmembers. CiM's Reference and Sean Deason's
Allegory
Metaphor are two amazing works of musical genius, fully-realized
albums

in this day age of the disposable Napster-driven isolated individual
track.

I like to think I'm pretty good at what I do, but when I hear records
like
these, I just have to stop and marvel at the creativity of the human
mind.

I would like to hope that everyone reading this list owns these two
albums -
because they're both masterpieces, and you should support the home team!
:-)

 - Greg

P.S. I've met Nigel Richards' Playboy girlfriend - she's nice and
beautiful.
I had to talk to her 'cos I saw this 611 bag next to her at an
event!

Common Factor is AKA Mr Nick Calingaert. He's clocked up quite a few
releases now, mainly on Planet E ('Pisces Groove', 'Expanded EP' etc),
but he's also put stuff out on labels like Paper and SSR. He's a great
DJ (although he hardly plays out in Chicago) and also performs an
excellent live P.A (with MPC 3000, Juno et al). I guess you could
describe his music as House... but it really has an overall modern club
sound (much like alot of the current Planet E 'sound'), that takes in
alot of electronic music's influences (both recent and distant). If
you're into Detroit flavoured music... I'd definitely recommend
tracking down some of his releases.

Detroit has so much history, coming from Toronto I was unaware of the

be open.
there is also a motown museum located on grand boulevard west of woodward

Another bundle of music that's come my way just recently that the list may
care to know about:

D-related:

Theo Parrish: Segments From The Fifth Wheel (Moods Grooves)
- as deep and abstract as you'd expect.

Black Noise: Step Into The Darkness (End To End)
- Mike Grant Therapy debut Mike's new label with two strong cuts.

Scan 7: Home Soil (End To End)
- Trackmaster Lou returns.

Funk D'Void: Desperado (Soma)
- includes an excellent Octave One mix of 'Barnabeats' from the fine LP.

Jeff Mills: Metropolis 2 (Tresor)
- 3 track vinyl single inc. 'Robot Replica', 'Flood' and 'Revolt', out 9th
April.

Others:

Andrea Parker: The Dark Ages (Quatermass)
- Brilliant dark electro 5-track CD (3 on vinyl), really brooding,
threatening stuff, co-prod. by David Morley - essential! Out 16 April.

Gaiden: Hit The Switch (Music Man)
- Steve Stoll Patrick Codenys (Front 242) joint project. They must have
been having an off day. Cack.

Lunar: Free-Return Trajectory (Stripe)
- something to listen to while we wait for the next REAL Red Planet record
to show up.

Re: [313] jeff [EMAIL PROTECTED]/flame bait?

2001-03-01 Thread Paul V

Very true statement Diana,

Techno was about taking an idea and expanding on it and never looking
back. Creating a new sound and letting the energy and excitment which
surrounded techno be expressed in the music. A lot of tracks were probably
produced on a Sunday after a good night of music and partying.

Techno has come to the point now that the Major equipment producers are
making gear which is geared towars a certain sound which the consumer might
be after, alas the groovebox.

I think that the generic sounds of techno have all been used to death now
and good tracks using these sound rely on different rhythms or baselines.

The most innovative tracks are using sampled sounds, this is how producers
come up with their own sound.

Now that techno has come out of the clubs and undergrouind and into the
street I think we should look to the street to provide the sounds.

pardon me for possibly sounding moronic or a non-gear
head...BUT why is it so many people strive to have the
equipment or know the equipment of supah DJs like
Mills, May etc? Why want to be like or sound like
them?

One reason why I fell in love with electronic music is
because it was filled with sounds I never had heard
before. If current producers want to sound like one
another doesn't that just produce stagnation in the
field? Isn't it better to find out how (insert name
here) made the name by toying around rather than them
just giving you the answer so your own flavor is
given? That's one reason why I fell backwards when I
heard Rotar for the first time-b/c it was diff't and
left field from any other track I heard at the time.
Rich, Gianelli, Mills, May they are all followed
because they did stuff in the past with out people
giving them answers. It was unique and fresh. If we
keep chasing equipment answers does that mean unique
and fresh will eventually evaporate?

Icons and pedestals are for pop music.

ok, flame me now. Oh.please.flame.me.

alton miller track I.D

2001-02-26 Thread Paul V
I was re -istening to one of my favorite mix house sets on Betalounge last
night and re-remembered a track which I've been searching for the name of
for quite some time.

if anyone can help me out I would be thankful beyond belief.

the set is - alton miller from Staple- 01/15/00

the track is at approx: 01:12:00:00

the vocals go stop looking for your suitcase ,,, you don't have to go
I keep trying to tell you I'm sorry but.. you wanna deal a mightly
blow.It's just a misunderstading I didn't mean it.

this track is super sweet man, I can't remember the last release that was
this smooth and complete.

Thanks ya'll
