2002-09-06 Thread james boylan

Hi,
I know these mails piss everyone off, but if anyone has any
recommendations as regards record shops or clubs in the above cities, I'd
really appreciate if you'd drop us a mail.

And just as regards the tragic loss of James Stinson...there's not much else
to be said really...I'd like to add though that the Transllussion records
have been among my favourite recently and I think stood head and shoulders
above a lot of the mediocrity that 'the underground' tries to flog us.

2002-09-04 Thread james boylan

I've thought about pitching at least one of my decks - especially when I'd
love to mix a Kraftwerk tune in with some Direct Beat tracks - I'd love to
kick Musik Non-Stop up to about +10 and jack it properly. What is the
chance of f*cking up the decks though?

Music Non Stop works OK at 45pm (pitched down to 8)I find.

It's definitely not the best way to do it, but I can't say I'd never do

mmm i dunno. i just usually think that tracks are done for some tempo

be. of course you need to always pitch up/down while playing but +16 is
way overkill. if playin house i try to keep in between -2 - +4, with
techno i can go up'n'down more but for example at +8 the bass goes
awful. kinda weak. and think about vocals of house-tracks at +16.
usually ruins the track totally.. kills the vibe totally because they
start sounding like how gabber-heads used vocals - pitched too up.

sorry if I have gone off on one but the uk pees me off with the lack of
Techno, the only thing coming to London that is new is the Marco
Carola..thank god for a new nite and some exciting prospects but shame
its
 on Thursday.

It's interesting that people should say this about the uk techno scene.
Maybe the problem is not only with the promoters but with the people who
support the scene. I mean, the line up for the Signal night was amazing.
And
the music at the actual night was so superb and interesting that I had
to

keep on running backwards and forwards between the two rooms.
Not only did the night have the drawcard of Juan (fantastic track
selection
and good mixing too!), but all the other artists featured were worth
going

to hear on their own merits.
Yet nearly every techno listener i know on this list and in the rest of
London chose to go to Lost. Why? I like Jeff Mills too but we've all
seen
him play loads of times at Lost and Lost has also not been really
special

for a long time. It's huge and crowded, Steve Bicknell always provides
3hrs
of torturously boring music and we've had a full 10 years of it!
Put your money where your mouth is and attend something different and
not

just the same old stuff which you complain about cause it's the same old
 stuff :)

from another mailing list:

BEAT ADDICTS- IMAGINATION (SWEAT/U.R)

gospel house number, on the flip is a deep detroit grooved out house

pretty much the same melody as a Rick Wade track I have on ATC (A Touch

I've got confuser 001 - if it is Marco Carola, it doesn't sound like him
as it's got a rough edge to it and his productions are usually quite
crisp-sounding. However I've not heard any Tobias Schmidt records so

Scmhidt's record are generally 'rough'and excellent, imho.

Hello all. I have a certain question concerning a certain record I
purchased a couple of months ago. The label simply reads 'Confuser' and
bears the names Tobias Marco. For the longest time I had no inkling
as

to
what the origin of this album truly was. As serendipity would have it,
I
was mindlessly leafing through an old issue of URB the other night, and
lo

and behold I see the name Confuser 1 in the reviews section. (If I
remember
correctly, the guest columnist was Regis.) From what I gathered the
artists
responsible were none other than Tobias Schmidt and Marco Carola. Is
this

correct? The tracks are amalgamations of samples from classic house and
techno tracks. Am I way off base here? Now, was this a one shot deal,
or

the beginning of a continued series? And is Confuser simply a project
name
or a label spinoff? Thanks in advance for the inside scoop.

   Rusty

RE: [313] Juan Atkins DEMF 2002 Set

2002-06-26 Thread james boylan

0. A pretty cool spooky soft intro, but I have no idea what.

That sounds like the same intro he played at the Lost gig in London, but
from there he started playing Maurizio et al.

1. Cosmic Cars, Cybotron
2. Clear, Cybotron.
3. Technicolor, Channel One.
4. Something odd -- Cybotron/electro old school, but with East Asian
riffs.
5. It's More Fun to Compute, Kraftwerk.

Atkins was involved with the first three tracks, obviously.

If someone knows what track number four was, I'd be just as curious to
know as James.

I think drexciya just keep on improving and moving on. A lot
 of people will
find out the 12 and album are great in a couple of years time IMO.
They're pushing the boundaries all the time.

Yes, I agree entirelyfar too many techno artists have become way too
complacent and just content to ape the traditional Detroit styles.

[313] Drexciya etc....

2002-06-24 Thread james boylan

Appeared to have touched a few nerves in my comments about Drexicya...

Of course its not all about innovation etc...I like a good tune as much as
anyone...I just think that Drexciya (amongst some others) are ahead of the
pack because they try to extend their sound a bit. More of a defense of
'Harnessed the Storm' than a critique of techno

Speaking of great electro, 313ers should check out the new 12 by Irish act

I was listening to Model 500's 'Vessels in Distress' the other night and the
percussive arrangement is trademark booty. I know there's loads of other
records that you could probably say the same thing of though. Just an
observation.

Btw, when is Update gonna be available in Europe?

Also, nobody's mentioned the new Low-Tec album 'Secret Corner'. Absolutely
loving this at the moment. Does anyone have any info or a discog on this
dude. I've only one other thing by him on Playhouse, which is also sweet.

detroit
techno/electro and caberet... I think someone once wrote/said'to
truly
understand bootie, you have to understand the Detroit caberet scene' but
I

 have never understood the link

.just to clarify my understanding...in the UK a caberet act would be
old

crooners in tuxes and ladies dressed in glittery custumes doing song and
dance...all glitz and glamour...sort of thing youd find on a world
cruise...uk

 ppl...Jane Macdonald anyone ? arf !!

I mean UR at a caberet (as i undersatnd it) seems surreal...Hope I
dont

 sound like a crazy foo'..

So the question iswhats a caberet in Detroit ??

Did many 313ers go to Lost on Sunday night? If so then what's the general
opinion?
Personally I thought the venue was poor but then I'd been to it before for
a 'Together' NYE party. It's just a warehouse with poor sound quality. I
thought the queues for the cloak room and bar took the piss and why do
ticket holders have to que with non-ticket holders?
I didn't hear all of Juan Atkins but I wasn't impressed with what I did
hear. The 'train-wrecks' were terrible and he didn't even look confident.
Was this Juan Atkins or a door man who filled in for him coz he didn't turn
up?
Thankfully though Derrick May saved the night. What a complete contrast
from Juan! May had a lot of energy and his mixing was quite good. I think
both of them might have had to battle against poor sound (it was better
near the front) no monitors but May was much better and more in control.
So to those that have been disappointed when Juan hasn't showed - don't
worry about it, you didn't miss much.

Well 'Music' on the last Madonna album was straight up Electro beats, plus
Madonna's twitterings.

It kinda reminded me of some of Mad Mike's stuff...eg. The Swarm

I actually saw the sheet music for 'Music' at the music store. With guitar
chords! Apparently there's just G major through the verse, and G minor
during

the chorus...

Akufen from Montreal is definately one of the most interesting artists i've
heard in a while. He sort of fits your description, so check out some of
his stuff on Perlon, Background, Trapez, A Touch of Class, Hautec, and the
list goes on and on...

I've got an ep on Trapez alright which is excellent...can't remember the
artists name though (Silikome or something like that)I must say I do
find a lot of the minimal stuff really boring...when it's good it's really
great though.

Heyall - hope you've had a good weekend. New purchase on Saturday was
Maurice Fulton's Ladyvipb Stories of a Broken Heart and Recovering which
I will HIGHLY recommend to anyone with even a passing interest in broken
beats, deep house, or jazzy techno. It's become somewhat of a sacred CD for
me already. The last number almost had me in tears - it starts of with a
balls out tribal rhythm, it really sounds like they are giving it all
they've got. then a melancholy piano piece - real simple - plays over the
top but it's in like 1/2 or 1/3 of the tempo of the rhythm. doesn't sound
right but it's really cool - and the combined frenetic energy of the drums
and the sadness of the piano made for me one of those moments that just
opens the heart.

Anyone have any web links to more of Mr. Fulton's work or any info on him.

About music -- new Theo Parrish -- was playing in the store yesterday
Dirty Rhodes track -- does it get any better than this? Brilliant
minimal jazzy deep house... on the one hand very loopy, on the other
constantly changing up in subtle ways, and throughout rubbing your
ears with that slightly distorted gritty Rhodes -- like double ought
sandpaper buffing your brain to a shine...

I actually thought this was a bit of treading water for Theo- I still
liked
it but not enough to buy it

I picked this up, too. Maybe not quite as strong as some other releases,
but

still, for me anyway, head and shoulders above most. I had a bit of a
nightmare yesterday with it, though: whilst I was in bed with a hangover,
my

girlfriend's dad came round and built some shelves. He didn't move the
records underneath first, though, and they got covered in brick dust! I
managed to save most of them (especially the Love Hangover) but the new
Theo, Nathan Haines Earth Is The Place and Barry's Music Maestro Please
got it bad - though with Dirt Rhodes it's hard to tell whether it's
properly fucked or if it was like that in that first place. If this ever
happens to you: don't brush it off, run it under the cold tap.

RE: [313] about the members

2002-02-02 Thread james boylan

About me:
James Boylan - grew up in area about 2 miles form Northern Irish border
called Monaghan, now living in Dublin and working as a sports sub at the mo.
 25 years old.

Like one or two other people on the list, the Network compilation 'Retro
Techno' turned me onto techno, especially 'No UFOs'.
I'd seen it reviewed in the NME and they gave it 10/10 (shock horror -
British press get it right). Subsequently bought CDs, but really discovered
Detroit techno music when I bought decks just over two-three years ago and
started buying vinyl. Also have a love of lots of other music from the
Smiths to KRS-One to deep house. Count myself lucky being in Dublin as one
or two clubs here played the real deal when it came to Detroit. Local
techno/electro and house DJs influenced me more than any visiting jocks I've
ever seen, although I thought DJ Bone was class when he played here. Hope to
get a gig one day myself. Went to DEMF last year (big up Dennis Donohue) -
highlights: Dopplereffekt and Ultradyne live and that little party in the
downtown cafe where Alton Miller and Brett Dancer where playing.

Pet Hate: Richie Hawtin's music. Very overrated I think.
Favourite Record: Sonic Sunset - Model 500

On the subject of artists from Dublin I got a copy of the Copper Beach ep
by Derek Carr yesterday. A stunning slice of deep techno. The guy got 500
pressed and took them round Dublin's record stores himself so I dont think
its got very far afield yet, but has anyone else heard it?

Yeah, it's very good indeed, Derek is playing live here sometime in March as
far as I know if anyone happens to be in Dublin at the time.

I've probably mentioned this before, but keep a look out for Dublin act
Decal, aka Decoy. They release stuff on Trama Industries, D1 and
Mass Transit. Generally, more on an electro tip, although the Decoy release
on D1 ('This town has lost its way') is techno. They have an album coming
out on Mike Paradinas' label Planet Mu (I think that's what its called).
They're also very good live.

I think some people are slightly embarrassed by the futurist

Well, yes I see your point. The same could be said for classical music.
Very few musicians have presumed themselves to be good writers as well. But
as a music enthusiast, I am interested in how the music came about, not in
a set of imposed ideas about what the music means.

itself...it really doesn't NEED notes right? I've got the cd, and it
would've STILL been played at full blast for nine hours straight on the
way home from the demf, without the notes.

But if you're going to add another layer to it...why not use a WRITER?
This is the jazz model more or less...and it works. Wynton Marsalis
doesn't write his liner notes...Stanley Crouch does. Now in some cases
the artist is a qualified writer in his/her own rightbut I'd argue
that these cases are the minority.

Re: [313] dd's 1st course in hygiene

2001-11-29 Thread james boylan

Freestate was by a guy called Rob Rowland, who also records for D1.

I think the next D1 record is by, or features, Mark Broom.

All the D1 boys (Eamonn Doyle, Scott Logan, Alan Carbery, Paddy Butler
James Walsh to name a few) are really great DJs aswell, if anyone is lucky
enough to ever catch them, although their club in Dublin (Model 1) is
currently without a home due to the rat population and unsavoury sewers in
their previous haunt Switch.

Here's hoping they do find somewhere soon, cos they've scheduled to bring
Drexciya over here to play in February.

eamonn
doyle and d1 records deserve recognition for their brilliant releases

I haven't heard that album yet but I've really liked each release on that

An entire weeks worth of events were recently

I've had the album for some time, and every time I

Yes... it even *looks* lovely... one of the few techno releases where the
sleeve art captures the texture of the music perfectly. That's the record
I'd have on while making my final approach into Cloud City...

A friend of mine has just gone off on his world travels, and he insisted
that I put the whole 28 minutes of I Wanna Be There on a mix tape I did for
his travels.

And, for me at least, the tracks really evoke a feeling of travel or a
voyage of some sort, particularly 'Neptune', which incidentally I think is
the greatest piece of techno ever.

Any comments on his releases?

I only have one of his records - I think it was his last one on Environ.
Liked it in the shop, but I obviously flicked through too quickthought
it was a bit dull and slightly naff when I listened to it properly at home.
Shades of Jean Michel Jarre I remember thinking.

I love Morgan Geist's stuff though.

One of the early string-infused soulful techno tracks I'd imagine...

Not one of my favourite Model 500 tracks but still great. Probably sounds
more like Derrick May actually now that I think of it. But of course one of
the great things about Juan Atkins is his versatility.

My favourite track on that 12 is actually Wanderer - just a bit more
unique and quirky I think.

Anyway, I'd say buy it.

Here's my first stab at it:

Okay. [faint]
Well ... I'm driving in a black on black *in* black Porsche 924.
Tempting fate.
My head is filled with techno beat, Metro Times, Face magazine.
Shadows out of time and space.
??? no place.

TIME SPACE TRANSMAT
[more vocals obscured under the chorus]

Contemplating contemptuously, the inferior designs ... and the
outmoded, underpowered and otherwise obsolete lifeforms.

TIME SPACE TRANSMAT
[more vocals obscured under the chorus]

How could she possibly walk in those shoes?

TIME SPACE TRANSMAT

Excuse me, but isn't that black leather micro length(?) skirt a bit much?
I mean, it really is overkill, isn't it?
She says, ???
The lights of passing vehicles reflecting in the mirrors and glass.
She looks at her watch, and I can see ... ??reflected?? dancing where
her eyes should be.

TIME TRANSMAT
SPACE TRANSMAT

The Porsche, not unlike a snake, sliding under the side of glass aquarium.
She slams the door behind her. And she reaches over and turns the
steering wheel all the way.
And she says nothing the whole time. She just sort of sneers at you.
And you see this: The distorted reflection of your face in her
mirrored sunglasses.

My favourite bit was always it really is overkill, isn't it?...

RE: [313] live sets

2001-08-30 Thread james boylan

The Dopplereffekt and Ultradyne performances at the Eyes Only DEMF 2001
after-party were both really special.

Inner City at DEMF too was greatlike everyone else is saying, Paris
Grey's voice was sweet.

I saw Random Noise Generation the first time they played in Dublin and they
were excellent...That was my first time to see a Detroit artist(s) play live
so I was extra excited.

Re: [313] Is Prince the root of all Techno?

The Batman soundtrack wasn't too badand the first track 'The Future'
at least shares a theme with techno. I'd imagine some of Prince's stuff
would have heavily influenced a lot of the early sexy techno like Where we
Used to Play and Just Another Chance.

Not to mention at one of techno's peak development years (1989),
Prince released the abominable Batman soundtrack.

A major feeder line maybe.

Consider that Mojo played a lot of Prince to a Detroit radio audience that
was especially appreciative. Prince proved the P-funk hypothesis.

Some building block tracks might include Controversy and Erotic City, but
there is that whole rock star thing that isn't quite in line with
techno...

For more dutch electronica bliss i would recommend all the tracks from
Stefan Robbers as Florence and Terrace. Especially the ones he recorded
for
GPR ('My mirror image' and Midioligy').

And if you still can find a copy buy everything on Shiver. Erik van den
Broek is one of Holland most talented producers. Subsonic Soundscape on
 Shiver is a must have!

I second that. I've been a long-time fan of the Shiver/Van Den Broek
material, but haven't seen anything newer in a while. Subsonic Soundscape
is

definitely a classic. While you're at it, see if you can track down any of
KJ's music. He's really diverse under his Moderator guise, and some of it
has a similar feel to this, some is more straight-Detroit from the past,
and

some hints at Tejada. Really excellent stuff!

picked this record up a few days ago 'silver screen shower scene',

good stuff, the original has sampled a bit from an old bobby orlando track
from 1983 'passion',
im hearing more and more samples of orlandos work in tech/house, ural 13
dictators used a bit from the 'passion' track aswell in one of their
remixes (robot systematic?) anyone listen to much of orlando's stuff? i
came across him in my dad's record collection, its cool hearing it in some
of the music today coming out of gigolos,laser-gun etc.

anyway, i like the laurant garnier remix the best, worth having in your
crate. dirty tech hats, driving bassline, just a good dance tool, and with
kittin's unique vocals- its good stuff.

if anyone's interested, Amazon UK (www.amazon.co.uk) are listing
Underground

Resistance's Revolution for Change compilation and also the classic
Detroit Retro Techno / Emotions Electric compilation on vinyl.

the UR is apparently 'usually dispatched within 24 hours' which suggests
that they've definitely got that one in stock. the Retro Techno is 'On
Order; is usually dispatched within 1-2 weeks' which suggests they may,
perhaps, be able to get copies.

anyways, if you don't have either of these records then i can't recommend
them to you highly enough!
