J.T. wrote a couple of months ago (Oct 18, 2006) regarding the rerelease of convextion - miranda: If the matrix release doesn't go forward -- or perhaps before it goes forward -- there will be a re-release on down low with only the original track and a new track, mastered at dm, just 300 copies or so. I kinda like this idea since tho it would be a re-release, the re-release would be even more rare, both old and new versions would be special..but we'll see what happens. just dug this old mail up to ask a question. will 'miranda' be rereleased through downlow or will it only be rereleased through matrix? pre-orders on the matrix rerelease are huge from wat i've heard, so i should probably preorder it now. on the other hand i'd rather not buy a 2x12 when i can get the same track on a 12 especially when the 12 is a really good pressing. jurren _ Hotmail en Messenger on the move http://www.msn.nl/services

First, what's your general reaction to vocal tracks? And does it bother you when some of these vocalists can't quite cut it? i mostly listen to the vocals as another instrument. so the tone of the vocal in relation to the rest of the track is way more important than what is sung, and even the quality of the singing. i can imagine loving a track i which the singing is actually quite bad, but where it works in connection with the rest of the music (joe lewis 'midnight dancing' comes to mind). terry brookes 'breaking cycles' is a vocal techno track i love, the new terry brookes vocal track however the vocal didn't work for me. though the quality of the vocals on this new track are probably better than on breaking cycles.

RE: (313) What Do We Think Of This? ( DJ Mag Poll)
a late reply to the (short) discussion from last friday on DJ mag's top-100 poll, because i think it is an interesting subject. i agree with the retro-vert mailing posted by ken and what dr. dog posted earlier. 1. yes, the dj mag top 100 is utter crap, and i don't care who's in it or not, and who's made the top 5; 2. however, it's a fact that the vast majority of the public that pays for tickets to events or clubnights does care about the top 100; 3. therefore promotors care about who's made the list and who hasn't (and they therefore will also care about who hasn't made the list, or who's fallen off the list); 4. therefore the vast majority of events and clubnights will pay money to book someone who's made the list, and will not book someone who isn't popular with those people that bring in the money (which in the case of events are not only the visitors, but more importantly companies that would like to use an event to advertise their products); 5. this will reduce the number of bookings for 'unpopular' dj's, the exposure of these musical styles in magazines, etc. so i think you should ask yourself whether or not you think this is good for 'unpopular' music. who will benefit from a decrease in exposure? we have talked about sales in techno going down, and the bad financial times that have allready meant the end of big shops and distributors. small labels are struggeling, and we moan about some of our dj hero's playing sets adjusted to their audience (stacey pullen) just to be able to earn a living. what would be the effect if for instance derrick may, laurent garnier and dj bone made up the top 3 in the next DJ mag top-100? i don't have the answers to these questions, but i think it would be an interesting subject to discuss. jurren

Jurren? stealing isn't really the right word, but if you use someone elses composition, you will need approval of the composer (assuming the composer still owns the rights to the composition) to perform or record the performance of the composition. i don't know if the rotating assembly has received permission to cover the song. under Dutch law the composer is entitled to being credited as the author of the composition (article 25 Dutch Copyright Act). so it is up to the composer to decide whether or not he/she wants to be credited. But for Carl, Derrick and all the others who have been ripped off by these crooks, it should be quite a lot easier. They know exactly who they are And it's not that they're so p*ss poor they can't afford a lawyer are they? Especially when it's such a clear case theyre going to win. So why they haven't done anything yet is beyond me. Let's hope it's only a matter of time. 1) i don't think it is that much harder for rolex etc to find out who are behind the 'fake' watches, than it is to c2 and co. to find out who's behind those bootlegs. the biggest problem will be to gather evidence that clearly shows who is responsible for producing these bootlegs. without clear evidence, they have no case! 2) like dave allready pointed out, thusfar they have only bootlegged defunkt labels: phierce city, incognito, buzz; or compilations: panic in detroit, carl craig remixes, it is therefore more than likely that either the owners to the copyright no longer have interest in these records, or there are multiple owners to the copyrights on the records, all of which makes it more difficult to take action. further, all you will achieve is that they'll have to cease production/sales of the records they have bootlegged. as soon as they decide to bootleg something else, the sh:t just starts all over again. and the compensation or damages you will/may receive are slim compared to the costs you'll have to make. btw piracy (counterfeit) is considered one of the largest industries of today. the us government even suspects that al-quada and other terrorist organisations get their funding from piracy, as drugs are becoming more and more hard to ship/trade. counterfeit and piracy are estimated to represent 5 to 7 % of the total trade in the world. Thomas D. Cox, Jr. wrote: so here's whats really interesting to me. i know how the economics of pressing records works, it usually requires selling a pretty large amount of records before you break even, and thats even when youre using tracks that you arent paying the artist for. since these guys need to pay for the mastering and plating and sh*t, are they really making much if any money? and if youre bootlegging and not making money, is that as criminal? especially if youre going to the lengths that HTFR (if theyre definitely the ones at fault here..) and having color sleeves and whatnot made, you really cant be making too much profit. well, let's take a look at it from a purely economic perspective. investors (here bootleggers) will base their investment on the likelyhood of return of their investment, or the possible size of the profit. regarding the bootleg of records a couple of factors are relevant: - mastering and pressing of records is expensive; - in general sales of records is going down-hill. i think it is therefore safe to say that the profit margin on these bootlegs is huge. so yes, bootlegging is a crime. the only reason they can get away with it is because the costs of litigation are too high for the artists/labels getting bootlegged. now to the bootleggers that do that little extra to make the records look real... the bootlegs are still easily recognisable, as they are still new as opposed to those records that were released 10, 20 or 30 years ago. but all they do is look the same, the sound quality on most is horrible! so in a year or two you'll be digging through the second-hand bins and come across a copy of relics for $10! woohoo, you spend your hard earned cash on the record, take it home, and find out it is the bootleg, they sounds terrible. i have allready bought that panic in detroit lp that way. and believe me, you feel pretty bad if you've decided not to buy the bootleg because a) you oppose to bootlegging , and b) you've heard reliable reports that the soundquality suques, and then end up with a bootleg, because it looks just like the real deal. jurren

(313) shake last night
a short report of last night, to let those that missed it know what they missed ;) marsel threw a little party last night in amsterdam, and he brought shake over to play a couple of records. only heard shake dj once before a couple of years ago (utrecht '97 ?) so i was really looking forward to it. woke up with the worst hangover in years though, so i spent most of the day recovering from the night before, but finally found the energy to catch the train around 10 pm. walked into the venue round 12, where the party just started to take off, shake was allready playing and the dancefloor slowely started to fill up. so what did mr shakir play i hear all of you think. what i can remember: mmm 'donna', snoop 'drop it like its hot' (45 rpm!), club scam 2 (both 'floor filler' and 'plugged in'), 'fact of the matter' :D , talkin heads 'once in a lifetime' (c2 edit?), first choice 'let no man put asunder' edit, krikor 'peeping tom', radiohead 'idioteque' and finished with pepe braddock 'burnin'. i think i heard some soundhack sorta style tracks come by, and some more disco and some italo (sounded like italo, dunno what it was though) and some more of his own work. all in all a great night, spoke to a couple of people i hadn't seen/spoken to in a long time, and didn't even get too drunk :) so thank you mr shakir for last nights soundtrack, and thank you marsel for bringing him over! jurren

Re: (313) A possible reason for so much off-topic...
what i think plays an important role in the decline of 313-techno being discussed on this list compared to, say 4 or 5 years ago, are a couple of factors: 1. most people now subscribed have been on this list for a long time, and have allready heard/read all the who is drexciya threads etc. so once a question pops up, it either gets answered quickly, or it passes everyones attention, as it seems irrelevant. 2. the knowledge available outside of the list has grown enormously. was the 313-list one of the few places to get information on drexciya, s.i.d., retroactive records or santonio echols, nowadays a google search will provide you with information, where a couple of years ago all you got was a link to a recordstore when typing drexciya into google. 3. if you go back to the '94 archives, and up to the late 90ies, a lot of information is shared on the period from '86-'94. all this information is now common knowledge, so it doesn't get discussed anymore, whereas a couple of years ago it made up for 20% or so of the total information flow on the 313-list. 4. and perhaps not as much techno is coming from detroit as it was a decade ago, where the rest of the world has caught up. all these factors combined, result in a decrease of on topic posts. jurren (who forgot to add orgue electrique's 'texas brooklyn heaven' on creme to his best of 2004 list) _ MSN Search, for accurate results! http://search.msn.nl

hmmm, just thought i'd add my two cents. the practice of this jetgroove website is highly questionable imho. i'd probably advice any labelowner to summon jetgroove to take all references to his/her label's releases off the website. basically jetgroove is trying to cash in on the fact that artists and labelowners have spend time, effort and money in getting their music out, and get noticed by the public. now jetgroove tries to generate attention to their PAID service making use of the hard work by other, whom have not given their prior permission. the fact that they place the names of artists and labels on their website, as if these artists and labels have granted permission, could possible even damage the good name and image of these artists/labels, should the practice of jetgroove turn out to be fraudulent or otherwise illegal. jurren _ MSN Search, for accurate results! http://search.msn.nl

the way i see it, there is nothing new to this judgement. every musical piece is subject to several rights. the composition of the music is protected by copyright / droit d'auteur; the text of the vocals is also protected by copyright / droit d'auteur (so you can have several copyright owners to one song); the musical performance (= the recording) is protected by (in the Netherlands it's called) Neighbouring rights, (i think it's what they refer to as mechanical copyright in the US). so in most cases the rights to the composition lie with the artist, where the neighbouring rights are with the production company (usually the label). using a one second sample, probably does not conflict with any rights to the composition. no matter how small the sample used though, it does make use of the original recording. so you are supposed to clear the sample with the owner of the neighbouring rights (the record company). now you can argue over the question whether or not the (recordings of) actual performance should be subject to protection, but as right now they are subject to protection, the owner to those rights should get compensation for the use by someone else. jurren _ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

Marsel wrote: with all this talk about nothing.. is detroit techno, techno from detroit only? or can it come from i.e. rotterdam as well? i'd say it has to come from detroit te be called detroit techno [that is, that's the tendency i see all around]. (detroit) techno started with rhythim is rhythim, model 500, cybotron, innercity, etc. that was called techno. than ur, robert hood, alan oldham and jeff mills came, and took the sound into a different direction. that was still called techno (detroit techno). other evolved techno sounds from detroit are still referenced by many as detroit techno. but how about b12, black dog etc? detroit techno? or something else? ig culture, 4hero, maurizio, kompakt or playhouse detroit techno? the way i see it, is that if it sounds like some techno (offspring) that originally originated in detroit, it will be called detroit techno. if however the evolved version was first released outside of detroit, it will not be called detroit techno. jurren _ Talk with your online friends with MSN Messenger http://messenger.msn.nl/

How about the DJ Rels Monk Hughes records? I am certainly not intimate with the whole Pharoah Sanders back catalog, but haven't recognized a single sample on either album. Anyone else? my guess would be that the rels stuff is sample based, and the yesterdays new quintet related material is at least partially sample based (so that includes the monk hughes) covers of songs by Roy Ayers, Azymuth, Weldon Irvine, etc. from Making Beats, the art of sample based hip-hop by Joseph G. Schloss: An unusually overt example of this philoshophy can be found in a cover version of the song Daylight that appears on the 2001 album Angles without Edges by Yesterday's New Quintet. The original version of the song was recorded in 1977 by RAMP on their album Come into Knowledge. It is best known among producers because a two-bar sample of its melody provided the basis for the classic hip-hop song Bonita Applebaum by A Tribe Called Quest on their 1990 album People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. As a result of being sampled, the previously obscure RAMP album became highly prized by hip-hop producers, sometimes selling for hundreds of dollars, untill it was reissued on vinyl in the late 1990s. On the Yesterday's New Quintet album, Madlib constructs a cover version of Daylight from samples of other songs (augmented by his own keyboardwork). Moreover, the rhythm of Madlib's drum track is not based on the rhythm of the original version of Daylight, but on the drum loop that A Tribe Called Quest combined it with to make Bonita Applebaum, taken from the blues-rock band Little Feat. In short, Madlib's version of Daylight is a virtuoso demonstration of production technique and knowledge, referencing the social and economic history of a commodity (the RAMP album), its use in the hip-hop community (Bonita Applebaum), and Madlib's own relationship to both. ... ok, i'll get my glasses (formerly owned by Elvis Costello!!), and my new annorak (bought off ebay, used to be owned by Liam Gallagher). jurren _ MSN Search, for accurate results! http://search.msn.nl
