both very good, although I think the magnificent dance has been overplayed by self-consciensly 'eclectic' DJs who all seemed to discover it when westway to the world was released. If you're only going to buy one I'd sod both of these and hunt for mustapha dance (the flip of rock the casbah) came out on CBS in the UK and Epic in the US. Oh, and it's got the greatest sleeve ever made. or you could go the less purist route and just buy super black market clash. -s There's another release with the magnificant seven and the magnificent dance on the flip. both are worth getting. they've been repressed and are easy to get. they're on epic or cbs _ Express yourself with cool new emoticons http://www.msn.co.uk/specials/myemo

it's been shut for over 2 months now with the last night being the british murder boys tour end of july with surgeon + regis live. the venue's been sold and is being converted to a restaurant apparently. a restaurant there? bloody hell. I was always surprised that there was a club like the Orbit in Morley, but it's still not as wierd as a restaurant being opened in that cavernous space. Re: (313) GPO & Acid House Connection
whoah there... check the census again, liverpool is 439,000 whilst manchester itself is 392,000. What I presume you actually mean is 'greater manchester' (which as the mondays are from salford is what we have to include), but since this is not a city you can't compare this to liverpool, you'd miss out st helens, widnes, runcorn (and christ wouldn't we all like to miss out st helens, widnes and runcorn - and bloody skelmersdale for that matter) and birkenhead, which has produced the north west's most recent success story. This brings up the population to 1.3m, as opposed to Manchester's 2.4m; smaller, but certainly not a sixth of the size, and a far bigger conurbation than anywhere in the UK apart from London, Birmingham and Leeds/Wakefield/Bradford, and has certainly produced more music, even in recent history, than the last two. The second point is far more prescient, Manchester at the time of factory - despite the limited success of the buzzcocks and the fall, was not a major musical center. Remember that for most of the early eighties Liverpool, ZTT and Erics were focused on to the expense of manchester, and even when factory first surfaced it's biggest selling act were from merseyside. Even after New Order's success, there wasn't what we'd recognise as any scene around the city, and the only people taking any chances on the bands in the area was Factory. It was largely as a result of the Mondays that the rest of the country took notice (and gave us, er, northside - great). In any case, as you point out, the UK is very much smaller than the US; so the idea of 'east-buttfunk' is a bit anathema. Your nearest musical center is only an hour's train ride away, so being stuck in the musical backwater of, say, late-seventies sheffield is far less of a disadvantage than being in minneapolis at the same time. -s or Liverpool. Wuh? Me thinks it's time Mr. Earle paid the UK another visit. :) Your megalopoli seem to be a bit confused with the inclusion of da pool (no offense Scott). ;) Other than this trouble-with-fact, I am 100% in agreement with your sentimonies, to invoke a Simpsonism. According to the 2001 census, Liverpool has a population of 439,000, which is not quite twice the size of Lambeth, the largest borough in London. However, there are something like 19 boroughs in inner London, so Liverpool is by no means a juggeraut of Engligh metropoli. Manchester is roughly 6 times that size, and Glasgow well outranks it. I think Bradford is about the same size, and how many people outside of the UK have heard of it? To put this in American terms, Omaha is over twice the population of Liverpool, and England is dense! But like I said, I agree with your sentiments, just not the Liverpool bit. :) _ Sign-up for a FREE BT Broadband connection today! http://www.msn.co.uk/specials/btbroadband
re: (313) ARCOLA
The sample's "uptown" from dirty mind (and I thought the Rakim was "I know you got soul" - possibly with bits of paid in full but I'm not sure); and that arcola record's outrageously good, isnt it?. Anyone seen their live PA thingy? I understand it's coming to Wang soon... So did you pick up that Shake / Soundhack record as well? it'd probably be my other recommendation of the week. I haven't offered a record recommmedation to 313 in some time, so that probably carries little weight to my suggestion, but check out ARC 000 on Arcola. It is Warp records from Sheffield, yeah you know home of early home of Aphex, Speedy J and Autechre etc, it is an offshoot of Warp that concentrates on a more 4/4 approach. This record features a track that has really nice germanic percussion over a Rakim sample. I don't dig the marriage that much but on the flip is a wicked slice of disco riddled pasty madness. It seems to hold a Prince sample in it too. Challenge to the geeks - what sample lives within? _ Tired of 56k? Get a FREE BT Broadband connection http://www.msn.co.uk/specials/btbroadband

Smallfish is probably the best, though if you're down that way the bi-wire shop is supposed to be good - I've never managed to make it myself, but their online catalogue is good and if I remember rightly you have to make an appointment any more. I'm sure Amanda's lurking somewhere here with the address or the URL. Stinky's is pretty damned amazing. It's spread over three floors, the middle floor having a balcony which overlooks the bottom, and the top one having a glass floor so that you can stand on the top floor and look between your feet down to the bottom. Don't take too many drugs and do this (or maybe do... whatever). very nice inside, generally tastefully decorated as far as clubs go whilst managing to be competely unpretentious, and although I never made it out last time I was there I'm told that the basement opens out into a garden, which might well put the icing on the cake. Basically it seemed to me to be the best after-hours venue I'd ever been in (and it's quite cheap as well). I've heard him twice and he was complete turd; very percussive, hard, nasty loop-based bollocks for the entire night, but then I was dragged down to see him a third time for a friends birthday and he completely blew me away; not as tricksy as the first few times, but his tune selection was fantastic and he'd slowed down quite a bit; dropping kraftwerk and I think even some cabaret voltaire in and out of a very funky techno set (in the orbit -hah!)... However, I have no obligation to help you say what you want using my resources. But, just as I have an obligation not to try to stop you from saying what you want, other people have an obligation not to try to strip you of the right of doing as you will with your mind and body. Further, none of these topics must be taboo. If it makes you uptight to talk about them, then it's probably a very healthy thing to explore them, gingerly if necessarily. "Freedom of speech" is one of the core principles of the United States' charter. Speech can be a threatening thing. Some belief systems have a hard time withstanding free communication. Some flourish. The basic guarantee of freedom of speech in the US is frequently ignored and often fought against by people who feel threatened by it. For those who take the freedoms of our society for granted, wake up and smell the coffee. Free speech is one of the key reasons we have a free society. I'm not looking for a fight, it just makes me sick to constantly hear: don't' say this... don't say that... don't have an opinion... blah blah blah... if someone sends and e-mail on 313 and i don't agree or i dislike his/her views, i for one will NEVER tell them not to say this or that, it's there right to express themselves. no, zero is supposed to be the point at which the arm balances exactly, so you'd balance the arm as best you can (so it's suspended mid-air) then wind the inner circle around -i.e. the one with the numbers on it, not the weight itself- until it points to zero. You can then set the weight to it's recommended setting (for most stanton/orthofon this is around 2) which all being well should play the record at it's best fidelity and, of course, not grind your records down too much. Personally I always find this to be a little too light for DJing, especialy if your table is liable to shake. -s I mean the screw-mounted weight at the end of the tone arm. Often, the actual cart will indicate the correct setting to which the weight should be calibrated - meaning the numeric dial also on this weight. RE: (313) re: best decks
I'm still undecided on whether the torque is better or worse. Although it seems logical to get as much as possible, when I tried mixing on Vestax I missed the ability to drop a record back into time by dragging my finger across the edge of the plate as I could with 1200s; although unexpectedly had no trouble moving back to technics again. I am pretty convinced that once I got out of this habit (bad for the motor in any case) I wouldn't mind. The only thing I am sure I would miss on technics is the +10 pitch control. I never had to use the +50's but I've often found that I was agonisingly just-out-of-range on the technics and had to piss about subtely speeding the other record up / down it's not the first time I've heard doubts about the build quality, but don't know anyone who's had them long enough for it to be an issue. their mixers have always been pretty nice mind. -s From: "Neil Wallace" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'Langsman, Marc'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,"'seth redmond'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,<313@hyperreal.org> Subject: RE: (313) re: best decks Date: Wed, 20 Nov 2002 10:49:55 - I got one pdx 2000 (as it was all I could afford at the time) and I really love it: -50% is actually really useful as use you can mix things at half tempo to do some weird x2s, having a reverse button is also very useful and yes they seem to have quite a lot more torque - which may not be a good thing if you play out a lot as after using vestax technics feel very light and you need to use a much gentler touch and yeah skipping is virtually non existent which I believe is due to the tonearm being designed to produce no lateral force perpendicular to the tonearm instead all the forces run parallel to the tonearm (or that's the theory anyway) Build quality wise I would say that echnics still have the edge insomuch as touching the deck with the needle on the record doesn't seem to make a noise thru the speakers whereas at high volumes if you tap the vestax you can hear the tapping. _ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Pelican neck is particularly good, kind of like a mini-smallfish, and whenever I go into Vinyl Exchange I always seem to pick up early KMS records and the like for a quid fifty. Actually you missed easily the best shop in Manchester... the truly awesome Beating Rhythm, a block away from vinyl exchange at al. Endless racks of northern, disco, (and a few reggae) 7s, all lovingly labelled and organised by people with true pride in their product (oh, and occasionally pretty damned rare and a teensy bit expensive). I'm not even making any attempt to bring that back on topic. and that's just about it. Sorry but the shops really are better in Manchester. Re: (313) O/T Liverpool UK
you'll have a job with record shops I'm afraid. They're all a little sub-standard. The pick of the bunch is in the palace on Slater street. Can't remember the name, but you go inside and down into the basement, and it's a badly laid out second hand shop with a fair range of techno, electro & house (down the stairs on the right, do not whatever you do go left or you''ll find yourself surrounded by box sets of fantasia XXIII tapes and Sy and Dougal CDs), but be warned you will have to dredge through a few racks of coal to find the diamond. Avoid 3-beat at all costs. It'll have one or two detroit records in there (since sometime voodoo DJ Andy Nicholson works there and has a hand in the buying) but apart from that it's really quite bad. full of scallies listening to nasty hardcore and frankly rude staff (Andy Nich quite definitely excepted, light brown hair, glasses, knows his stuff and is a nice bloke)... I've a bit of a personal axe to grind with the shop since last time I was in there they tried to charge me £15 for a TLS record on warp (with a 7 quid sticker on it), on the basis that it was an import... 'what, imported from f**king Sheffield?' Probe's not exactly full of techno but I have a soft spot for it and it may be worth a go; just over the road from the palace. Besides it's been open for almost a quarter century and had a hand in the liverpool punk scene so you could just go for the historical interest (moved from it's original HQ though which was far better). And you might want to try Hairy records in Bold street. To my mind one of the best second hand record shops in the country, although again no techno (a few decent early house records if you search though). and that's just about it. Wildly off-topic by this point but... The soundtrack which was released for this film is totally different to the actual score, they've re-worked most of the tracks, rapped over them, that kind of thing. It's pretty good, mind, but it missed a few ace tracks (esp. the music when he's practicing on the roof). Anyway, I seem to remember there was a 4-track vinyl promo doing the rounds when the film came out. Did anyone pick it up? and if so, what was on it? Oh, and a bit of pointless movie trivia, the indian guy they mistake for Ghost Dog (Stupid F**king Whiteman) was Gary Farmer, who played exactly the same character in Dead Man... Perfect film. -s There was a thread recently about movie soundtracks... don't know if this one was mentioned then but showing tonight on Chennel 4 at 11.40pm is 'Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai' which has a wonderful dark hip-hop soundtrack by The RZA that many on this list will really enjoy. RE: [313] cleaning vinyl
remember all you chemists out there: like dissolves like! ;) well, yes, but since most dirt will be lipid based (greasy fingers and all) this would mean you'd have to pour oil on your records. Not good. Basically vinyl is PVC (poly-chloro-ethane), it's incredibly stable as long as you don't affect the chlorine atom. Anything with a fairly high electronegativity will screw with your records, fairy liquid is low so it won't warp them, but bleach (being about the highest you can commercially get) will f**k your records like a two-dollar whore. Use any anionic solvent, such as ethanol or lighter fluid, and you'll get no residue and a clean shine. If in doubt rub a bit between your fingers, if it feels greasy it's probably chock full of -ve ions and will leach the chlorine from your pvc. alkanes / alkenes such as lighter fluid are particularly good, since they only consist of a long chain hydrocarbon which is almost totally chemically inert (as long as you don't set light to it of course). It will also evaporate clean away in a few seconds. have fun. -s _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] ?? copyrighting DNA tunes ??
way off topic, but: this is extremely unlikely to come off... Firstly copyright is supposedly only applicable to work which is significantly original. But supposing they get around that (since so many people have). There has been a precedent set within the life sciences community that most genetic sequences aren't patentable. That is, those which are sequenced directly from the organism cannot be patented. Even though several US bioscience companies are attempting to change this, the weight of opinion is against them. Not just public opinion, more importantly, the financial clout of Celera / Maxygen et al is *seriously* dwarfed by Zeneca, Phizer, Sigma and the really, really big pharma companies - none of whom want potentially lucrative gene sequences kept out of their hands. The support of these companies for organisations such as the Sanger center or NCBI is enough to sway legal opinion in their favour, even in the US. Those companies who do have private sequences which they wish to 'loan out' such as the infamous Celera, have to govern their use through private contracts. The confusion arises since what is genuinely patentable is original techniques and, due to a rather confused ruling made (once again) by a rather ill-informed US court, this means the extraction method for every different sequence can in theory be patented individually. To analogise, this is as if people had been DJing for years but you managed to patent mixing 'I Feel Love' into 'French Kiss' (and instantly destroyed Derek May's mixing career). However at the moment (and for the foreseeable future) the only truly patentable sequence is one which is entirely artificial, and these are extremely few and far between. -s I think the deal here is that the copyright would be in the "sound recording rights" not the song "publishing rights". But it's a murky area and one thing we know is that whenever copyright or other intellectual property rights are involved, systems designed to protect the creator, performer and audience often end up being tilted toward the intermediaries who add no value at all to the music, art, photo or writing itself. _ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] kraftwerk bookies?
I'm surprised by this. Personally I couldn't agree less. I thought the book was pretty lacking in all departments. the research is pretty lazy with most details being rehashed from previous interviews, and Barr does his best to suggest that Kraftwerk single-handedly created all modern music (with occasional assistance from Bowie). Whilst the book's remit might have meant he was preaching to the converted I found it all a little tiresome. I fact this argument (which I'm just dying to believe anyway) would have been all the more convincing if he'd actually bothered to look into the contemporary work which also stimulated these genres rather than basically shouting 'Numbers!', 'Autobahn!', 'Very Influential!' ad infinitum. I understand Barr has worked for the NME in the past, and to be honest this is what "From Dusseldorf..." reminded me of, the same poorly argued sensationalism over and over again. In my opinion it wastes a great subject and I came away from the book a bit pissed off that I'd wasted my time on it at all. I'm in the minority here, but I'd advise you to steer well clear... great title though. -s > > Tim Barr's book is superb - he's one of the UK's finest > > electronic music journalists without a doubt and I highly > > recommend his Kraftwerk book... > _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

OK, first off, Muller was head of the Gestapo. For anyone in doubt, a quick web-search will tell you that. Re: [313] uk tech-house/layo & bushwacka
- you get dull-tech-house nights, you get micro-house nights, you get body&soul nights, you get looped-bangers nights, you get detroit-techno nights... You don't often get plain old good nights out" Probably due to the size of the place. I mean how likely is it you'll end up at any night which doesn't spell out it's music policy in advance. And by that I don't mean "would you go to it?", but rather, "would you find out about it in a city this size?". It's pretty hard -usually takes some damned clever flyer design- to get across a particular ethic without spelling out the playlist (i.e. tech-house, body and soul -whatever) and hence sticking to a particular genre, and with the competition being so stiff in London it's hard for anything small and interesting to get past those first few nights. I suppose the exceptions to this are the few people who have the clout / credibility to draw a crowd without sticking to one particular style (probably Andy Weatherall - again, or Warp's nights). but there aren't many... That said, I can't recommend the Rotter's Golf Club enough -s _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] jeff mills stars again
Sorry, but how many of these clubs have you actually been to? Not only does the Orbit have a fine sound system, and facilities which elicit few complaints; most importantly it has a crowd who have a clue. Who go to see the DJ rather than to say they've been to Fabric / Bugged Out / Whatever, and who will understand what it is Jeff's trying to do. What is more, clubs like Orbit, Voodoo, Atomic Jam etc will also charge the punters a clear tenner less than Fabric. I had an interesting conversation with James Pennington a few months back about the crowds in Bugged Out (based at Cream lest we forget) compared to Voodoo when he played (clueless fuckwits was, I think, what we settled on). Both clubs are in Liverpool, both supplied much the same standards of accomodation, etc; but if he'd stopped the music and played Cosmic Cars in Voodoo, people would have done more than stop and stare... By opting for the expensive, commercial end of the industry, Mills is neglecting the promoters and fans who have fought long and hard to convince him to return to England. To suggest that this is about the gender bias in clubs is naieve, ill-informed bullshit. -s P.S. Yeah, that's part of what it was about, but Levine was also known as being the main man for it. His parents owned some successful businesses in Blackpool, and he was one of the first Northern Soul DJ's to fly over to the US with the intention of going to old warehouses and shops to buy rare soul. I'm getting way OT here, but... I recommend a book called "Bass Culture: when reggae was king" by lloyd bradley. It's the whole story of that Prince Buster / Sir Coxsone / Duke Reid sound system war and as well as being a damned good read, Lloyd Bradley is one of the coolest b**tards alive, and I'm proud to be able to give him a bit of my hard-earned cash. Detroit connection? I seem to remember that LLoyd bradley once played with George Clinton. If anyone can remember which band that was with I'd much appreciate it... hasta seth Sometimes these battles were literally just that. If my memory of reggae history serves me right I believe it was Coxsone (one of the major soundsystem runners) who would send thugs out to the rival soundsystems to bust them up... guns, bottles, rocks, knives the real deal. He would often do this to find out what song was driving another crowd nuts. Remove the label and he can't do that. He may destroy all your equipment but he wouldn't find out that hot tune was. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
Re: [313] taking off labels
This was a practice picked up by the Northen Soul Djs in the UK who played almost exclusivly rare and old Detroit soul. actually, this is a bit wrong... Northern Soulies have always told the name of the tune. It was the importance of owning the track rather than knowing the name. Once it had been 'broken' they were all for telling folk since they'd be highly unlikely to ever get it, since some of the records were b-sides and outtakes which were never even released and were only found twenty-odd years later by trawling through warehouses. Also, they didn't all play old detroit soul. much (if not most) 'Northern Soul' was actually Mississippi based as -particularly around Wigan- the DJ's were after a particular 'driving' sound, and with detroit sound you just don't get the kick drums... It's an interesting point however that the sound in Yorkshire, mainly cleethorpes, (less famous and less well reported than Wigan / Manchester) is somewhat sweeter and more detroit based. A large number of northern soul DJ's will often toast their records trojan-style, including last time I saw them both Keb Darge and Dave Godin, and the same happens on some old (really really old) tapes. hasta, seth "talc" redmond _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
Re: [313] Drexciya was Venue Info
sorry, I had to interject... the last time this was discussed it was regarding Red Planet, and who was it let the information slip?... one of The Martian (or should that be one of the martians - this many-people / one-person thing plays hell with my grammar). if they want me pay my 7 quid for their records, then I have a right to be curious and it's up to them to be secretive. quite simply, if they wanted to be anonymous that much, they shouldn't have let it slip... I won't post it here flame fans, but if anyone wants to know they can check the archives at about november last year. - seth _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
Re: [313] -in defence of Oakenfold
I don't know the track either, and yes, he's the epitome of the overpaid underskilled DJ. (so please don't write back to tell me this) But (and it's a big but) it seems no-one remembers he used to be a pretty good producer. I guess a lot of the American folk haven't heard "Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches" by the Happy Mondays, or Oakenfold's genuinely good remixes of such. -and of all his generation, at least it's not as bad as the route taken by Mike "I used to play the hacienda you know?" Pickering. I'm getting all misty-eyed now, I might have to go find my copy of groovy train, and a beanie hat... Seth Don't know that "Bullet in the Gun" track you speak of but I'll make him a"Bullet in the Brain" track right now... ; PThe Kooky Scientiston 2/22/01 5:50 PM, Mad Wax at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:> hey! dont diss oakenfold, his bullet in the gun track was truly innovative!>> ;)>> mad wax>> That makes the hpDJ 40% better than Oakenfold!!!>>>> The Kooky Scientist>>>> _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
