(313) The Escape Velocity

2021-05-27 Thread cnd

Hey 313,

Its bound to get a thread eventually. Worth clocking on Axis, techno
magazine and expounded digital series. It is 2021, I haven't got to
grips with the downloads yet until autumn I reckon - heavy volumes out
already more coming. I'm planning on delving in like sci fi novels.
Chinese artist, Orlando Voorn and some new names I haven't come across
before starters for 10

https://www.axisrecords.com/escape-velocity-magazine/issue-two/

My father used to have bookshelves of half-decent american scifi, the
prolificness of Axis' ASD catalogue takes me back..

Also curious about the rotary mixer out of Switzerland.

cheers

Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) became Strand which then became
self-aware as Harbonder(?). There used to be a flash animation to prove
it. I used to listen to the Messages series while reading The Republic,
very melodic but file under difficult to mix to. Links too to Puzzlebox,
Hubble ep. Enjoying the new Mirror Touch btw, file between Digital Soul,
End to End, Metamorphic.

Tbh I prefer Suburban Knight's last ep on detroittechno, seditious
single track. Helps with the politic.

Great recommendations all around! Glad to read all of the talk about
Strand. They don't really miss.

Suburban Knight's rework of Prince's Erotic City, Derotic City is
pretty fun to my ears:
https://detroittechno.bandcamp.com/album/listening-systems

Also like the sound of Mike Schommer's brand new one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9nzY22thQY

Stumbled upon this MM mix from a few years ago the other day that I
didn't know existed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c04U4MY6lVg It is
a longer version of a similar track on the digital version of Taken
Away.

And have also really been enjoying Brian Kage's stuff lately:
https://michigandermusic.bandcamp.com/ His productions vary a lot in
terms of style which I like. He has also done a lot with Luke Hess as
Reference, Omar S and has been mastering quite a few Detroit records
as of late including those from Norm Talley and Delano Smith.

I'm by no means an authority on Strand, but they had a release on
Frictional and one of those tracks "Zephyr" was also on the True
People comp as Kech and B. Bonds back in the day. That was my intro to
them in any case. It looks like Brian Bonds was replaced by Brian
Boyer along the way.

Yooooo.

A couple of (313) things I thought people would want to know
about.

New Strand https://strand313.bandcamp.com/album/silicon [1]

Newish Russ Gabriel on Ferox.
https://russgabriel.bandcamp.com/album/off-centre [2]. I like his
other recent
stuff, but this is back on top form for me. Like he is drifting
somewhere
in between his '00s less techy output (of which I am a huge
admirer) and
the recent return to techno.

Some Nuron releases I'd missed. https://nuron.bandcamp.com/music
[3]. There is
also a new 2x12" Likemind reissue that I need to pick up before it
goes
https://www.rubadub.co.uk/records/likemind-06 [4].

Placid Angels - Touch the Sky
https://figure-music.bandcamp.com/album/touch-the-earth [5] (note,
for some
reason the digital release is priced much higher at Bandcamp than
other
stores for some reason I am struggling to fathom).

Kyle Hall's MPC Dreams
https://kylehall.bandcamp.com/album/mpc-dreams [6]

Urban Tribe reissue (which is incredible)
https://urbantribe.bandcamp.com/album/urban-tribe [7]

Loads of other great stuff about presently, but this was the
topical stuff
I don't think I've seen mentioned.

Cheers,

Nope. I seem to remember being aware of an industrial T.H.D. at that time but I
didn’t know who was in it until just now from your email. The name change was
unrelated to them and came about due to a [redacted] issue as a result of

@Tristan
No worries. Your version is more salacious and probably makes for better press.
Thanks for the compliment.

@Nathan
Those Radiohead remixes were done on a lark as part of a remix “contest” back
when “In Rainbows” came out. They were posted to a website that stayed active
for close to a year, I think. I put “contest” in quotes because there were no
prizes. Still, it was a fun exercise.

Usually, my goal with a remix is to keep a prominent aspect unaltered and try
to compose something completely new around it. With “Nude,” the vocal track
plays from beginning to end as it does in the original song. “Reckoner” uses
just a vocal snippet but it stills follows the same philosophy.

Speaking of which, here’s a link to a Matthew Dear remix I did for a Vintage
King remix contest. I don’t know where you can find the original version of
“Can You Rush Them” now. Again, I kept the original arrangement, vocals, drums
and some sound effects. Where my version has a sort of jazzy, Bossa nova chord
progression, his original version was more of a drone in D…or G, I don’t recall
which.

Anyway, I’m glad to hear you liked the Radiohead stuff, as well as some of our
other stuff.

Have always dug Strand’s stuff. I remember listening to their remix of
Radiohead’s Reckoner repeatedly. It was part of a remix comp I think? Just
found it again now on Soundcloud.
https://m.soundcloud.com/harbonder/reckoner-radiohead-remix-2
Agree that the latest release great. Can’t get enough of Idiom.

Who is Strand?…indeed. Being somewhat of an authority myself, I can safely say
that Strand is and and has always been Brian Bonds, Kech and Brian Boyer (me).
Before that, we were T.H.D. on Serious Grooves. We are from Detroit, although
there are several other Strands out there that hail from different places.
We’ve done things a bit low-key over the years, which accounts for the
uncertainty as to who’s who. I’m glad people are interested enough to ask, even
if they don’t get it quite right.

Cheers,
Boyer

Re: New 313-relevant stuff

2021-05-13 Thread John Sokolowski
Great recommendations all around! Glad to read all of the talk about Strand.
They don't really miss.

Suburban Knight's rework of Prince's Erotic City, Derotic City is pretty fun to
my ears: https://detroittechno.bandcamp.com/album/listening-systems

Also like the sound of Mike Schommer's brand new one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9nzY22thQY

Stumbled upon this MM mix from a few years ago the other day that I didn't know
existed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c04U4MY6lVg It is a longer version of
a similar track on the digital version of Taken Away.

And have also really been enjoying Brian Kage's stuff lately:
https://michigandermusic.bandcamp.com/ His productions vary a lot in terms of
style which I like. He has also done a lot with Luke Hess as Reference, Omar S
and has been mastering quite a few Detroit records as of late including those
from Norm Talley and Delano Smith.

Yo.

A couple of (313) things I thought people would want to know about.

New Strand https://strand313.bandcamp.com/album/silicon

Newish Russ Gabriel on Ferox.
https://russgabriel.bandcamp.com/album/off-centre. I like his other recent
stuff, but this is back on top form for me. Like he is drifting somewhere
in between his '00s less techy output (of which I am a huge admirer) and
the recent return to techno.

Some Nuron releases I'd missed. https://nuron.bandcamp.com/music. There is
also a new 2x12" Likemind reissue that I need to pick up before it goes
https://www.rubadub.co.uk/records/likemind-06.

Placid Angels - Touch the Sky
https://figure-music.bandcamp.com/album/touch-the-earth (note, for some
reason the digital release is priced much higher at Bandcamp than other
stores for some reason I am struggling to fathom).

Kyle Hall's MPC Dreams https://kylehall.bandcamp.com/album/mpc-dreams

Urban Tribe reissue (which is incredible)
https://urbantribe.bandcamp.com/album/urban-tribe

Loads of other great stuff about presently, but this was the topical stuff
I don't think I've seen mentioned.

Cheers,

Re: New 313-relevant stuff

2021-05-13 Thread Tristan Watkins
I forgot to mention the new Reggie Dokes as well.
https://reggiedokes.bandcamp.com/

It's superb. I forgot to mention it because I balked at the $28 digital
cost, and picked it up at Juno after my latest Bandcamp haul. I always try
to support artists directly, but being asked to pay this much extra through
Bandcamp baffles me a bit. I've probably spent far too much time pondering
this question lately, and suppose maybe this is a Patreon-alike approach,
but I really struggle to wrap my head around paying this much of a premium
for digital content. Dunno... Not wishing to start a thing, just something
that also cropped up recently with the Placid Angels album. I know Reggie
Dokes encouraged people to buy directly through Bandcamp for this release,
so thought it was only fair to share that link, but thought I should own up
about not buying it there myself...

In any case, the new album is great, and you should buy it somewhere.

The Metamorphosis of Twookie Wonder Brown is almost 15mins of P-Funk
dopeness, even has the comic book style artwork like you used to get in
Parliament albums. B-side is a track from Celebrity BBQ Sauce album.

Another Day EP was a Los Hermanos release on the same label from late 2020,
uplifting gospel house on the main track.

All great recommendations Tristan.

I picked up the Nuron 2x12". Very clean pressing. I always thought
Nuron/Fugue was perhaps Stasis or B12 but maybe really is a return of the
mystery racing car driver.

The Parabellum Detroit compilation from Rick Wilhite and Delano Smith is
out on vinyl now having been on bandcamp for a while and full of big names

New 313-relevant stuff

2021-05-10 Thread Tristan Watkins
Yo.

A couple of (313) things I thought people would want to know about.

New Strand https://strand313.bandcamp.com/album/silicon

Newish Russ Gabriel on Ferox.
https://russgabriel.bandcamp.com/album/off-centre. I like his other recent
stuff, but this is back on top form for me. Like he is drifting somewhere
in between his '00s less techy output (of which I am a huge admirer) and
the recent return to techno.

Some Nuron releases I'd missed. https://nuron.bandcamp.com/music. There is
also a new 2x12" Likemind reissue that I need to pick up before it goes
https://www.rubadub.co.uk/records/likemind-06.

Placid Angels - Touch the Sky
https://figure-music.bandcamp.com/album/touch-the-earth (note, for some
reason the digital release is priced much higher at Bandcamp than other
stores for some reason I am struggling to fathom).

Kyle Hall's MPC Dreams https://kylehall.bandcamp.com/album/mpc-dreams

Urban Tribe reissue (which is incredible)
https://urbantribe.bandcamp.com/album/urban-tribe

Loads of other great stuff about presently, but this was the topical stuff
I don't think I've seen mentioned.

Cheers,

Re: the 313 hyperreal synth discussion

2020-12-21 Thread cnd

Hi Hue, Jodie, list

First of all, apologies for being cryptic and obtuse. Second of all
slightly retarded.

I guess my point is that (although admittedly yes this is not a
synthesizer product) this is a fine example of techno american
engineering craftsmanship. These bags have lifetime guarantee,
transporting rekids from gig to gig. These are created by my man Case
and his machines. Not quite the same as squeezing 60 records into a hip
hop joint - will purchase the right sp-1200 whatevs evetually but rupert
rosinthrope samples are my key concern. Afterall, who samples the
beatles?

So yes, I'm retarded as this is a synth thread but I'm not derailing. It
just didn't look like the thread plugged in, get me? Perhaps it's a slow
burner but we can all see that long and successful synth threads don't
necessarily survive simply on the basis of starting them with the correc
rule set, despite intentions righteously observed. I guess I was being
contentious because, Denise aside, it is nice to hear from a certain
professor David Powers that he is still in the material domain having
posted perhaps unplugging the system some time back. Why not
cross-pollinate 2 threads?

Third and forth, anyone fancy sprinkling some afghan red seal into a
little strand thread or new anthony shakir rumours business? I for one
was prob being a bit too trigger hippy whilst awaiting one of those very
very rare end of year top 20 20 from emerging and recalling it taking me
all the way back to what had not just passed us all by. Forthly, as an
environmental programmer, my stratavarus keys were lost on me in that my
machine is the dancer. Any chance of learning the rules of how to setup
a footwork thread Barny?

Am I koalified to be this contentious? Well I studied evolutionary and
adaptive systems at sussex. When I was a kid I had a Betamax. Why.
Because we couldn't afford VHS and Rambo was eighteen-rated anyway.
Dude, finding those cassettes was a motherf6ckR.

peace

C

p.s. thread away I'm no dictator-anarchist, you've clearly got a few
unplayed cards if you wanna start a synth thread Wilma be my guest xx

p.p.s how do you make that London bruk sound anyway?

Don't worry, the main grief-giver is gone, likely hunkered down in their
Ypsi spite-bunker, telling anyone who'll listen how lame this e-mail list
is.

Frankie Hutchinson is right on, and more than just her words. The focus of
Discwoman (on women/nonbinary/people of color) created careers for new,
unique voices in dance music, and she's had to deal with a lot of dragging
from people who can't handle the idea of people other than white men
calling the shots.

The world of dance music has room for all sorts of people, even white men
;-) but it's clear that the black erasure needs to stop. And the people
feeling attacked over this issue need to open their ears. When
under-represented (and underpaid) artists & DJs are given a chance, they
enlarge and deepen the music. The whole idea that 'affirmative action' is
reverse racism is so stupid. What happens when an effort is made to
include the underrepresented? It exposes whole worlds of talented artists
that were previously ignored.

So this thread so far is 3 white guys talking, so I'm going to shut up now.

Re: Business techno & Detroit 313 list

2020-08-18 Thread David A. Powers
Andrew:

I don't think there are any easy answers to the problems this article
brings up, and especially, these are problems that no individual can solve.
They can only be solved by COLLECTIVE ACTION, something that is especially
difficult during a pandemic. That means that those of us who really want to
make a better future are going to have to connect, come up with strategic
plans, and actually work together to take concrete steps to bring change in
the real world.

I don't have any easy answers, and I'm personally in a situation where I'm
trying to avoid becoming homeless again, so I'm not sure to what extent I
can do anything beyond looking out for my own survival at the present
moment.

BUT, I do think I have some idea of the questions that we need to ask and
work on together, if we are serious about creating a different situation:

* How do we move beyond empty symbolic gestures to create systemic change?
How do we do it in an organized way that doesn't just amount to moralistic
virtue signaling done by individuals that doesn't change the larger
structure?

* If the music industry is driven by profit, and the profit motive
incentivizes behavior that often results in unjust treatment of people
based on things like gender, race, and class, how is it possible to make
any substantial change within the context of capitalism? To what extent are
concepts of justice compatible with the ideas of free market competition
that are supposed to underlie capitalism? To what extent does the idea of
individuals in competition itself always create a kind of pyramid shaped
hierarchy where there are only a few winners at the top and everybody else
ends up at the bottom, to create a situation where there are more
opportunities for all talented musicians, and all talented serious working
musicians have the opportunity to perform and get paid fairly for their
work?

* What kind of organizations would allow us to create events with more just
outcomes? How should those organizations be structured? How will they
survive and be sustainable in the context of capitalism and an industry
driven by the pursuit of profit?

Business techno & Detroit 313 list

2020-08-18 Thread Andrew Duke
[I am still shaking my head about the extended insanity that erupted on
this list the last time I shared a link to dweller (their Juneteeth post
compiling a listing of 60 articles related to techno's black history.) Not
in a mood to be trifled with. Do some deep research before you give me
grief again about my posts aiming to inform and possibly start discussions
done with respect. Black is spelled "black" in their posts (likely stylized
lowercase presentations) and I am posting this (below) verbatim. Ash Lauryn
has written for them. Her sister, The AM, is one of the best new DJs out
there. And yesteday I literally deleted all music from and related to Kevin
Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Terrence Dixon, and Scan 7 from my collection.
Those artists have been HUGE for me, some for 32+ years, but I am not
interested in supporting artists who do not truly support women in a world
already full of so many challenges. Check my Facebook if you want more info
about how I feel. Check Jeff Mills' FB page where people fell over
themselves yesterday to like the sharing of a June 11 article that trotted
out more B3 repetition and failed to, once again, acknowledge women. Not
leaving the list, but getting tired of little effort being made to provide
what this list could be if more contributed. There are so many talented
voices here who remain silent. Debate earnestly with diplomacy; take a deep
breath and reread before you post, though: the internet is forever. Andrew

By the way, I nuanced what you didn't yourself. You tweeted, for
instance:

the 313 listserv is a place where racists & sexists thrive.

the 313 Detroit techno listserv is a place where whitesplaining is
the name of the game. & if you don't whitesplain & don't support the
whitesplainers full tilt, you're villainous.

techno and toxic whiteness are BFF. boyfriends 4ever.

the 313 listserv is a place where mostly elderly white men will tell
you who to listen to and who to like and what to think about it.

on the 313 Detroit techno listserv, i'm accused, by kent williams,
the elderly white man moderator, of making the list a shadow of what
it used 2B. it's been dead [Skull] 4 years. boring AF. it's a shadow
of its own death.

I mean... The 313 list might better be (passively or actively)
supported by its members, instead of openly accused of such
behaviour, right?

What do the other members think of this?

I'm quite sure that anyone who's able to communicate constructively
or at least neutrally in an interpersonal sense (which is simply due
as long as anyone doesn't cross lines with someone else), is welcome
here. Of whatever nationality, age, being a he/she/they, and with
any possible skin colour or religion. As long as the love for
Detroit and its culture is a structural link.
And whoever crosses lines in whatever sense to anyone, should be
able (or brave enough) to be confronted with that, get into a
righteous exchange, and take any eventual apt message, to get
straight with facts and people. They
should not be blocked or unsubbed necessarily, but anyone in such
interaction should be or feel invited to get into fair overthinking
and conclusion, based on healthy exchange - with anyone being free
of personal conclusion, but not free of interpersonal respect.
Unless anything bad will take over and gets installed. A forum only
exists by grace of anyone's constructive behaviour.

This, at least, is my way of looking upon this.

1. Pile on Denise Dalphond. What ever issues you have with her, complaining
about Denise is not on topic for the 313 list. Either contact her and work

Don't forget Streets of Rage 3! That whole soundtrack sounds like UR,
Mills, and The Advent sat in the studio and tried to see who could "out

2017-12-16 Thread Brian Prince
Yo Logic7, good to hear from you again.

Nice find! Yeah, a lot of the Japanese game composers in the early 90’s were
listening to records from Detroit and Chicago. Another great example is the
Streets of Rage 2 soundtrack from 1992 by Yuzo Kishiro:

https://youtu.be/_62PVfghXtc

(I dubbed the whole soundtrack from that game to tape so I could listen to it
on my Walkman on the school bus)

Hearing that stuff when I was 12 and 13 primed me for the Tresor compilations I
started picking up when I was 14 and 15.

Hey y'all... it's the member formerly known as Logic7

I've been on an old video game kick, particularly old vertical shooters like
Twin Cobra, Raiden, and the many bullet hell shooters from companies like Cave.
While getting my fix I ran across a game called Battle Garegga by
Raizing/Eighting. I'm playing for the first time a couple of nights ago in all
of it's early bullet hell goodness when I get through the first level. The
second level starts and the music changes and a melody of of stab chords starts
playing... And I recognize it almost immediately. I played for less than a
minute more and had to figure this out 'cause it sounded like a direct rip of
something I've heard before. I paused MAME and hit Youtube for old Mills and
UR, and I find the track: Jupiter Jazz by Underground Resistance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQv3dCkY2Tk
More Google-fu turns up the music from Battle Garegga; a double-CD composed by
Manabu Namiki, released last December. Among the track listing was the name of
the track for the second level of the game: Underwater Rampart (an obvious nod
to UR)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYbINBnYeFA
^^^ That's the original version from the arcade game. The game wold be released
for the Sega Saturn with a re-recorded version with different instruments
instead of the Yamaha YM2151 4-op, 8 part FM chip used in the arcade game's
system board (as well as the Yamaha DX100). With the composer's name, I ran
across an interview with him where he states this:

http://squareenixmusic.com/features/interviews/manabunamiki.shtml

"... I held a great admiration for techno music, and I had a good deal of
respect for the Detroit techno artists in particular: Derrick May, Underground
Resistance, and Carl Craig. The main programmer of Battle Garegga was also a
fan of their music. Inspired by their music, I almost felt that I had something
of a mission to take that energy and breathe life into the game's music.
Battle Garegga used FM synth and ADPCM synth for its hardware. This equipment
was obsolete compared to the standards of other arcade games in 1995, so I
needed to make full use of it to design the sound for this radical new shooting
game. I made use of all the skill I had accumulated with this hardware at NMK,
and I also studied Hitoshi Sakimoto's use of FM synth carefully.
The sound of Battle Garegga was influenced by my friends at Raizing, by Detroit
techno, by Summer Carnival '92 Recca, by FM and ADPCM (YM2151 and MSM6295), and
by the game music of Hitoshi Sakimoto and Shinji Hosoe, all of these people and
things I respect..."
Since he's also done music for Cave (creators of my favorite bullet hell
shooters), I'm now on a mission to find anything else he's slipped into his
games that have a very Detroit-inspired sound.

Hi Fred,

I know you're busy 'nd all, but I have to say: that Monongahela Road

Unless of course, you can recommend something finer, non-Dust Science of

FYI, digital download sales don't amount to anything. Still waiting to

Yeah OK. That's cool. Nothing we don't already know. Shame there isn't much
new techno that good.

BTW when George Clinton was here in Australia he was asked about the
elevator quote. He said if he was stuck with Kraftwerk he'd f*** them in
the a***.

I suppose that shouldn't be a surprise to me, but I didn't know. That
makes some sense though. It seems almost impossible for most people to
make money making music these days.

It would have been great to be a producer during the 90's. I bought a
lot of vinyl then too.

It's remarkable how limited a lot of electro vinyl releases would seem
to be currently. It looks like releases of just 100-250 records for even
the most well known artists. Good releases have some rarity, yet demand
is not what it was either.

I tried to start a label beginning about 15 years ago. I probably would
have kept releasing vinyl, but 9/11 happened which seemed to suck the life
out of the dance vinyl world, I lost my job and didn't have $1500 to press
records, and after that, well, the whole world changed.

But weirdly, I've been selling this record again in Europe through
Discogs, so hey maybe it's time has finally arrived.

I miraculously still had the digital masters on a backup disk, mastered
them digitally, and uploaded them to BandCamp. As far as I can detect, no
one ever digitized and uploaded them before; whether that means I slipped
it into the marketplace just before digital music really caught on, or
maybe DJs thought it qualified as a secret weapon to hoard, I dunno.

Awesome again. Nothing personal but it only took me a half second to
switch over to the mix from the old Mike Paradinas tracks I was
listening to on Soundcloud (which are pretty much shite so far).

Any mix which opens with some Lardossian Cruiser is good in my book.

I tried to start a label beginning about 15 years ago. I probably would
have kept releasing vinyl, but 9/11 happened which seemed to suck the life
out of the dance vinyl world, I lost my job and didn't have $1500 to press
records, and after that, well, the whole world changed.

But weirdly, I've been selling this record again in Europe through Discogs,
so hey maybe it's time has finally arrived.

I miraculously still had the digital masters on a backup disk, mastered them
digitally, and uploaded them to BandCamp. As far as I can detect, no one
ever digitized and uploaded them before; whether that means I slipped it
into the marketplace just before digital music really caught on, or maybe
DJs thought it qualified as a secret weapon to hoard, I dunno.

vinyl release as well on MDR. Rob Hood (as Floorplan) also featured on the
 mix as well!

To me, this is good news, and I'm happy to be involved in something
of this nature, the link below has clips of the tracks on the mix-from what
I hear, it's going to be a good one!

Cheers and I'm happy to see sharing of great releases on the list!

Yes, roots.

Looking forward to go further in the discussion after you hear the music played

Preslav Lefterov, Thomas Cox, and Adam Ratana are Pittsburgh Track Authority.
Yes, Tom Cox aka Pipecock, the man who started many beefs on the 313 list, puts
his money where his mouth is.

I think it's a brilliant work, and these guys have a ton of vinyl out in the
past year.

Thought someone might care that Stingray is playing Thursday at F8 in
SF and friday Omar S and Aaron Fit Siegal are playing at the same
spot. Here's a nice Stringray mix with some weirdo named the
Sentinel's track featured in it.

Haha, I have no idea who that Sentinel guy is, but he sounds awesome ;) I have
never seen him play before, I'll see if I'm allowed to sneak out, being a new
dad and all, that stuff is tough! P.

RE: (313) Terrence Parker

2014-05-01 Thread Paul Kendrick
I have no real information on these no shows (just whats been said here) but I
do have first hand experience of booking dealing with him and he was a real
gent, his agent was a hard a** though, difficult to deal with if I remember
correctly.

I hope he sorts all this stuff out as his by far one of the best djs I ever
seen.

I really don't have an opinion on what TP is doing...but I do have a couple of
thoughts

One-as I have also had the opportunity to perform with, and talk with
Terrence...I don't find him to be a 'superstar' dj...I find him to be almost a
total square peg. To me, that doesn't matter much. As I have been following
this, I've had a couple of feelings about it. One-many people enjoy kicking
you while you're down. And, two: This music business has always been a game
played by people with honest hearts against those who would rather eat your
heart for breakfast.

My hope is that he'll tell us all the story in some public way (whether he
'makes his goal' or not). I believe it could be a great cautionary
tale-because some kid with a good ear and stars in their eyes needs to know
that this business and life have a dark side. I've lived the good times and
the bad in music, and can say with great talent comes great pain.

I refuse to trash TP publicly. I do think that on its face this issue
looks horrible for him and his 'image.' As a believer in God, it also can be
difficult for the non-secular among us to not think of Televangelists begging
for money before 'God calls me home.' I only hope that he is able to make a
resolution.

Personally-I've been homeless TWICE, lost 75% of my records, all my memorabilia
and two different hardware studio setups already...and I've never, NEVER been
able to find an agent willing to work for me. One day it may happen.

However you look at this situation-it's really quite sad and painful to watch.
If you like being uncomfortable, it's a great drama.

I'll keep my eyes on something more positive instead.

LIke I said, I have no idea what happened with Terrence, and people who are
professionals should show up when they're expected and do what they do.
Missing gigs as a DJ is really hard to live down. As an example, Paul Johnson
got a reputation as a no show, and I think that it still effects the number and
quality of bookings he gets to this day.

I just want people to know that whatever happened, TP is a human being too.
There's a tendency -- and I'm not accusing anyone on this list per se -- to
pile on when someone's down, and I couldn't see it happen to someone I know and
respect and hold my tongue.

very sad to hear about TP's personal circumstances and i wish him all the best .
i do wish though that the issue with the promoters was handled a bit better .
most promoters are actually reasonable . you do get idiots same as in any other
job but i do believe that when you give good reasons for canceling shows to
promoters and give them time to find a replacement dj and working on solutions
with them then a good way can be found in resolving issues . i work with mainly
american dj's . 1 of those dj's had to cancel a whole tour of 10 dates last
december as his mom was out of the blue , diagnosed with a terminal illness and
he just wanted to go home , understandably so . i immediately reached out to
promoters and asked the said dj to also publish a formal statement apologizing
to fans who had already purchased tickets for some of those shows . 100 % of
the promoters were very supportive . we managed to reschedule all of the shows .

i heard that 1 of the promoters involved in the TP situation went as far as the
airport and he was nowhere to be seen . they got an email that evening saying
he could not make it and they feel that they were not even afforded a valid
reason for the no show !

my biggest worry with this situation is that , this fallout will impact other
dj's - just because they happen to be american . when i started working with
dj's beginning of 2008 . i approached several known clubs in europe and as soon
as they realized that i was working with mainly american dj's some went as far
as to say that they simply are not comfortable with working with american dj's
because they come with problems . i.e. , not showing up for gigs and general
attitude problems .

i feel in the last few yrs we turned a corner

(313) Chicago House Master Mix

2014-05-01 Thread Paul Wise
Hi guys, not really 313, but 312..it's only a digit out and i know
theres some fans of chicago house on here

This is a mix I did for Dj International Radio, using records
predominantly from 87/88/89.

Any excuse to do a Chicago House mix ;). These records make up the
spine of my collection, which has been built around the early years
86/87/88 from which so much good music was released. This mix is a
shade under 2 hours of 'Music that's good for your soul' to quote the
now sadly deceased Frankie knuckles. I've thrown in a few unavoidable
crackles and mixes that aren't synced to within an inch of their lives
make the mix a bit more organic than the usual offerings. To make
ilife even more difficult, as with all my mixes, there's never any
planning, I choose a first record and go from there, if I let a record
for its duration it's because it's either a brilliant record which
should be heard in it's entirety or I'm frantically searching for the
record I want to go with it (usually a combination of both. I hope you
enjoy listening to it as much as I did making it.

Mix is here - https://soundcloud.com/placid_88/placid-mmix
