He did a Mix for the online magazine Fact here in the UK - don't think I was that impressed at the time but I'll maybe revisit it. There's a new Oliver Who Factory thing coming on Planet E by the way - if you like their stuff it's great - epic, swirling and off beat in equal measures (might be ruined by the keyboard Saxaphone riffs for some!!) it's pretty different from most other Planet E releases I can think of in recent times. Didn't see any chat on the Eddie Fowlkes 12 that came out a few weeks ago either - Let my nuts hang. Great chugging Detroit House with all of Eddie's catchy riffs playing off each other over immaculate House beats. I wouldn't say there is a huge amount of music coming out of Detroit that's being missed at the moment on the list but it does surprise me occasionally when stuff like that doesn't merit a post. Be that as it may, I haven't heard anything he's done I haven't liked to some degree and a lot of it has my vote of confidence. That doesn't mean he hasn't made a bad track - it means I haven't heard anything I'd toss out with the trash yet, and I've heard a few 12s and this full length. In my book, that equals 'worthy of continued investigation', at least. Of course mileage may vary, but I don't normally hold my own ears subject to consensus. I've had them for almost 50 years and they've gotten me by quite nicely thus far through a good many trends. :-) j

(313) Nice find of the weekend
was digging around the used bins and found Likemind 03 http://www.discogs.com/release/6140 for $2.00 what gets me is the mad prices these records go for now - were they limited or do they just not show up in shops that much (people hanging on to them?) I'm surprised that Goldmine hasn't caught on to the fact that techno records are trading hands for insane prices now and they've become collectors items most dance 12 are pretty banged up but that would mean that a mint copy would be worth so much more I suppose that the world of the record collector still belongs to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan crowd eh? Re: (313) Nice find of the weekend
I have Likemind 01 and it's a classic record. I believe that most of the Likemind records are limited to 500 (though I could be wrong, UK people speak up!) and I had thought the label owner left the UK to Nepal or Tibet for spiritual awakening... I just checked the archives and there's a Wealth of info on Likemind: http://elists.resynthesize.com/search.php?list=313q=Likemindsubmit=go According to this post, Lance indicated that he is rumoured to have moved to Tibet: http://elists.resynthesize.com/313/1998/10/25771/ Likemind was owned operated by Paul Smith aka Nuron/Fugue. I was told by a UK friend that several years ago Paul decided to give up music and moved to Tibet to be a monk or something crazy like that. Regardless, neither he nor Likemind has done anything since. This looks like a good time had by all direct from the WANG email alert system: This Saturday WANG heads outdoors for it's first all-nite open air party of the summer. We put a huge amount of effort into these events, which are totally free to attend, as we think they have the most amazing vibe of all the parties we put on. We are lucky enough to have use of the musical might of: The Fairshare Unity Soundsystem to help bombard your senses with a bass that sings like no other. Line-up confirmed so far is: Lula Electro Elvis (WANG) Mark Broom (Pure Plastic) Radioactive Man (Control Tower) Dead Silence Syndicate Band (totally mental full live drumbass band with electronic drums and all-sorts) Warlock (Rag Bone) Noyeahno (Rag Bone) Post Human (Seed) Ardisson (Seed) Brucey Bonus (Seed) Julian Fairshare Unity J Stretch (Rotter's Hip Hop commando) Disco Dave (WANG) Matt Vernon (Analogue City) George Skull Hull (Baselogic.net) Ed Chaimberlain (WANG) We will also have a small chill out system provided by Baselogic.net According to the met office the weather is supposed to brighten up by this weekend, but we have a large marquee organised just in case The location for this party is somewhere in the east of England on the Norfolk/Suffolk borders, a couple of hours drive out of London more location info to follow shortly We have also updated the website and it now features some photos from last year's outdoor WANG, and one of the photos taken outside of the last WANG at The Premises. While we're on the subject, http://www.creativesynth.com Run by my friend Darwin Grosse -- there is a Detroit connection -- I went to Jack The Nation in Chicago with Darwin, Stewart Tracy Walker, and Mike Dvorkin, and saw DJ Rolando and Traxx. That was the party that got shut down because someone bust a pipe in the bathroom, and all the power cabling for the PA was under 3 inches of water... I stood watching Traxx next to Kelli Hand, and lit her cigs for her, completely star struck. Aux 88 was supposed to play but bailed for one reason or another. [313] nice electro / greets
I'm a newbie to this list. After lurking for a week, this my first post (in years... I'll explain some below). I'm a little surprised at this thread. To me, electro is so much a part of the fabric of Detroit -- the foundation for ghetto-tech, etc. Anyway, two cents on nice electro: 1. Hashim - Al Naafiysh (The Soul) -- Already mentioned, but worth emphasizing. 2. Twilight 22 - sure, Electric Kingdom, but also Siberian Nights 3. Any of several cuts by Newcleus. Jam In It, may be familiar, but check out Computer Age (Push The Button), Jam On Revenge, and Destination Earth (1999). A lovely cassette, that was. Rhino has a four part Street Jams: Electric Funk series that is fantastic. I don't think I've seen this mentioned here. Tracks that make me cry (or at least still give me goose bumps once in a while): 1. Clear, Cybotron. I can't decide between a bunch of Juan Atkins things, so why not one of the most important songs ever created in Detroit in any genre (IMO, based in part because it stood up to so much late night airplay)? 2. Octagon/Octahedre, Basic Channel. 3. Trans-Europe Express. Kraftwerk. Also, Numbers/Computer World 2. About me: I was really plugged in eight years ago. I was a card-carrying member of the Midnight Funk Association as a tyke. At my height, I had accompanied Morgan Geist to one of the Packard parties (before he got famous) and I had blabbed an awful lot on mw-raves. I do believe I even met the Marmoset. But then my career sent me to the electronica purgatory of Utica, N.Y. and I lost touch. I'm in Rochester, N.Y. now. I was able to check out DEMF last month on a visit to the folks. Inspired, I signed back up here. And I have a lot of catching up to do. Anyway, greets. A final note: Anyone have an .mp3 of Mojo doing his MFA rap? (I'll bet someone does). I would die for that. The significance of the whole thing eluded me when I was 12 and taping songs off his show. Back then, radio seemed to suck less. JOHN KOHLSTRAND ROCHESTER, N.Y. The last issue of URB (Bjork on the cover) also had a nice piece about the influence of Hip Hop (or 'bling bling) on IDM (guess you could say the influence of bling bling on blip bloop..hehe). I was really happy to see this article, as the genre's influence on one another has been especially present recently (check out the new Dntel on Plug Research, some tracks also show this). It was refreshing to see it spoken about in URB. The article even touches on yet another white genre being influence by black music (the article praises Timbaland and the early productions of Dr.Tre to name a few).
