Andrew

Thanks for the help. I can see you've been rinsing this one with it appearing
in 8 shows! Unfortunately only one mix still appears
to be available (I presume the presence of a link indicates this) but I can't
get that one to go (Object not found) either.

But no worries as there are 2 alternatives for me:

1. The record is available at a shop - in which case I can check clips there

2. It isn't - in which case I probably don't want to hear it as if I do like
it I will then get frustrated at not being able to get
it and it will join the list of records I want but missed. So transitory has
the nature of vinyl become, with people only daring to
do small runs, that things get on this list all to easily now. The list is
getting big and I find it healthier just to rip it up
and not spend daft amounts of time ferreting out things I might want but missed
at the time.

As it is Shake was kind enough to drop me a line to say that it looks like
those copies weren't promos, the label only wanted to do
500, they're gone and that looks like the end of it.

The shame is I can totally understand a label doing small runs with seemingly
diminishing sales, they've got to keep viable (this
isn't meant to ignite a is vinyl dead? / no, indie bands are selling loads
of 7s! debate) but observing how things run at my
local shop it's obvious that it works 2 ways and all the limited runs are part
responsible for the diminution - sometimes they could
sell many times over what they get. I'll go in for a record and it's like no,
you missed that one when I am right on watching
their website for new stuff and live just round the corner.

In times past when there wasn't such a through-put of material I reckon a
record could be shipped in, sit on the shelf for a while,
have people gradually hear it out and about and rate it / hear about how good
it was and then it would slowly get picked up - a
sleeper. What chance of that now?

Francis

Thanks for the help. I can see you've been rinsing this one with it appearing
in 8 shows! Unfortunately only one mix still appears
to be available (I presume the presence of a link indicates this) but I can't get that
one to go (Object not found) either.

Apologies for directing you to a dead link, Francis. I just checked now
and see that show was
for February 4. I had taken the show itself off my server in order to
make way for a newer show,
but I forget to take the link off the show archive page. I'll get that
taken care of.

With all the renewed talk of this EP, I had already planned on playing a
track from it on this week's
show (which I'll likely mix tonight), and I'll still do so, along with
new material from Aux 88, The Black Dog,
Reade Truth on Planet E and lots more goodies (Kai Alce on Deep
Explorer, Florence
and/or Wladimir M. on Eevonext, Speedy J remixing Terrence Fixmer, Kai
Alce on

his NADTL imprint, and more).

I'm sure Shake is listening, and that the reason he hasn't chimed in

Personally, I wonder if he's interested in getting into the whole mix

Second, as Melody noted, several DJs had problems with that same

I started to say how much I liked his set at the festival, because I
love how he mixes it up track selection-wise. Nobody sounds like him

He quickly corrected me and said that it wasn't that good, and of
course the mixer issue came up. If I recall, he said good track

Wow, it's pretty early in the morning to read such asine comments and I
haven't even read the AP wire yet.

Before I begin, I have to take some responsibilty here, since I did
provide certain treats that obviously clouded his thinking. That being
said, lets debunk this myth of the same set.

1) The previous set couldn't have contained the new UR record since I
jjust handed it to Shake 5 min before he played it (great record by the
way everyone should go out and buy it, if you haven't already done
so) and I haven't spoken to Doc brown lately.

2) I'm sure the records you recognized were in fact his own records that
he was dropping, and as a fellow label co-owner, I hold no ill will
against someone dropping their own sh!t, especially when it's
fanf%ckingtastic.

3) Wow that's the first time i've heard someone complain about hearing
classics, I'm speechless on that one.

4) As for the mixer I'll take the hit on that one as well. I realized
that at times the low pass filter was pushed down on the right table and
I didn't intervene. I'm sorry that I ruined your experience, my bad. But
I noticed that everyone else was having the time of their lives, myself
included.

5) As for finding the fantastic music he dropped boring, that's your
loss. But then again I shouldn't expect that much from someone who
enjoys Anchorman over the 40-year old virgin. For those readers who have
no idea what I'm referring to, trust me when I say there's no
comparison, the virgin crushes the Anchorman.

Stay classy 313;)

you can find someone that has stored these mixes on his/her computer.
these mixes are:

- a two hour mix from a black nation records party in kalamazoo
(used to be available on the black nation website)
- shake's mix at the first demf, approx an hour and a half
(used to be available on groovetech.com)
- recording from a party in paris, france: paradise massage
(used to be available on d-i-r-t-y.org or .net)

i hope someone still has that bnr mix!

please familarize yourself with the mixer

Those who have bravely ventured forth to play records
(or CDs or DATs or MP3s or whatever) to the public also
recognize checking the equipment with the previous user
rather than winging it as a sign of professionalism.

I can't tell you how many times over the weekend I saw
various big-name DJs explaining to each other the basic
working of a particular mixer. In 1992, there were three
or four basic mixer types (and only a handful of viable
manufacturers). Now there are dozens of basic layouts
and hundreds of variations. Sometimes even the basics --
where the cue volume is and how to set levels -- aren't all
that easy to spot, especially in a dark room (or DEMF
tent as the case may be).

I also know that equipment suppliers have to juggle things
to make it all work out -- nobody stocks only a single
model (you'd have to throw out all your inventory and
start over every year or two anyway, as the older ones
are discontinued), and the explosion in mixer types and
the excessive number of bells and whistles (literally, in
many cases) compared to even a few years ago is pretty
astonishing to see.

Criticize the track selection and mixing all you want, but
give the DJ some slack for the conditions that almost
always apply anywhere you don't own the sound system
yourself.

I'm going to chime in on this one because well...

 It's anyone's right to dislike/like a set.However,
when it's Shake...for me at least, it's a different
thing.

Shake is a good person. He is a businessman but is
always kind and at least straight forward. He has
always been-always will be. I grew up seeing his sets,
always with a smile and always willing to talk to
people, shake their hand.I remember the first time I
saw him with a cane and then when I saw him in a
wheelchair. It was quite a visual to see his health go
up and down.

Like or dislike, considering Shake's role in even
the existance of this like...I doubt you'll find many
of the old timers to agree with you. However, I hope
Shake isn't more of a dissapointment to you...but in
the long run perhaps someone who is more of a role
model in the music make or listen to.

Re: (313) Shake Friday

Have fun all of you - I was thinking of coming down to
see Shake in MCR as his gig here clashed with
Wildplanet live.

However I was informed that I had already commited to
going away camping for a friends birthday on a private
beach somewhere in the north of Scotland this weekend
so had to choose - chose Shake, had a great time, took
him a bit of time to get used to/ comfortable with the
setup (plus he had only flown over that day and had
probs with immigration apparently etc so not the least
stressfull preparation I guess). Anyway, he played
some great tunes (possibly even ones of the next Dust
release I would suggest ;-))
For those looking for perfect DJ'ing some were a bit
dissapointed but I dont think they are aware of his
health issues and I think that man deserves big
respect for still coming over here to do his thing. I
for one was certainly happy to dance about and listen
to him for a couple of hours and im sure you lot will
too.

Oh - and to ease my pain at choosing Shake over
Wildplanet, unfortunately Wildplanet had technical
probs and couldnt play his set so I didnt miss
anything and hopefully he should be getting
rescheduled.

Cheers

Unfortunately, I hear very little 313 type music in Chicago. What techno there
is here, usually is not of the deeper or 313 oriented variety.

So, as a Chicago resident, it doesn't surprise me at all that Shake hasn't
played here. It may be that Chicago DJ's are too territorial, or that the
house/techno divide has grown too big, or that in booking out of town artists
only big names are considered, but I just rarely see any of the Detroit
locals who are great coming into Chicago to spin. Though lately I've noticed
some slight improvement, in fact there seems to be a slight upswing of techno
events generally.

Now what we really need is a Chicago UR night, that would be so hot if some UR
crew would do a show here... we're so geographically close!

the house/techno divide has grown too big

I know this is the case here in atlanta as well. We rarely get good techno
unless late night essentials is involved and even then, it's mostly the younger
glitch head netlabel crew in attendance. Non of the real old timers on the atl
circuit because unless kai drops it on Saturday between shelter anthems and
calls it house, they are afraid. The great divide, eh?

or that in booking out of town artists only big names are considered

Dunno bout chi town promoters, but if they don't consider shake a big name,
they haven't done their homework. Dude's huge. Just ask germany :).

if youre expecting a technically flawless set, youll be
disappointed. if you like eclectic and funky sets mixed up in
about as interesting a manner as possible, shake is your man. he's
easily in my top 3 deejays ever. i cant say enough good things
about him.

Another Track ID on this great diverse shake mix,

At 28 minutes. it's got that midwest quirky melodic techno sound ala dan
curtin or titonton, but with crowd pleasing soulful lyrics I've been
searching for you, so very long. Thank you kindly.
