[AI] Interactive CD for competitive exams
Well Friends An idea has struck me and I think, if put into actuality, it would benefit any aspirant of competitive exams. We read many books for such exams. Why can't an interactive CD be made for those books, maybe, one CD for one book, or it may combine a few books for particular domains. Such an interactive CD allowing persons to solve objective questions by choosing alternatives and giving feedback, has been made by MKCL for MS-CIT exam. I think it can be prepared by publishers for all sorts of competitive exams. Even blind aspirants would also get a lot from it as it would simulate the actual test taking experience and would dispense with the need to record the material or have it read by somebody or have it scanned. If anybody is aware of any such product, please let me know. or else, the idea may be mooted with some publishers. Re: [AI] my brief intro.
Hello Salman, Welcome to this group. I am using this list because I would like to ask you something which might be of interest to all of us. Recently I attended a seminar organised by NIVH in Kolkata. One of the speakers, Smt. Aloda Guha, told the house that in Pakistan, there is a rule that if a company has 20 or more employees, it is bound to employ at least one disabled person. Otherwise, the company will have to send to the state exchequer the salary of one employee every month. Best Regards, Amiyo Biswas. [AI] Gene Therapy Creates New Fovea
Friday, August 14, 2009 Gene Therapy Creates a New Fovea Treatment leads to an unexpected improvement in vision for one patient. By Emily Singer Twelve months after receiving an experimental gene therapy for a rare, inherited form of blindness, a patient discovered that she could read an illuminated clock in the family car for the first time in her life. The unexpected findings suggest that the brain can adapt to new sensory capacity, even in people who have been blind since birth. The patient, who remains anonymous, suffers from a disease called Leber congenital amaurosis, in which an abnormal protein in sufferers' photoreceptors severely impairs their sensitivity to light. It's like wearing several pairs of sunglasses in a dark room, says Artur Cideciyan, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, who oversaw the trial. At the start of the study, physicians injected a gene encoding a functional copy of the protein into a small part of one eye--about eight-to-nine millimeters in diameter--of three patients, all in their twenties and blind since birth. In preliminary results published last year, Cideciyan and colleagues found that all three patients showed substantial improvements in their ability to detect light three months after treatment. The researchers have now published new results of the study in the journal Human Gene Therapy, showing that these improvements remained stable after one year. And in a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, they describe surprising gains in one patient's vision. It was unexpected because the major improvement of vision had occurred within weeks after the treatment, says Cideciyan. Probing further, the researchers found that the patient appeared to be using the treated part of her eye like a second fovea--the part of the retina that is most densely populated with photoreceptors and is typically used for detailed vision, such as reading. The patient could detect dimmer light using the treated region than she could with her natural fovea. We realized she was slowly adapting to her newfound vision by subconsciously focusing her attention to the treated area as opposed to the untreated central fovea, says Cideciyan. It suggests that there is a plasticity, an ability to adapt in the adult visual brain. It's very encouraging, says Kang Zhang, an ophthalmologist and director of the Institute for Genomic Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, who was not involved in the study. The formation of almost another vision center has implications as we go forward for patients with congenital blindness. They might not be able to use their normal fovea, but they might be able to develop a new center of vision. Researchers now plan to study other patients in the trial to determine if they have experienced similar improvements. They also hope to figure out how to accelerate these gains, perhaps by using visual training targeted to the area treated with gene therapy. The scientists also say that the fact that patients' visual improvements held for a year after injection is promising. It means that for congenital or childhood blindness, says Zhang, there is the potential to at least stabilize, if not improve, visual function. Copyright Technology Review 2009. [AI] Pakistan blind cricketers denied UK visa
Pakistan blind cricketers denied UK visa By Aleem Maqbool BBC News, Islamabad Pakistan's cricketers are worried they will not be able to defend their title Earlier this week it was members of a pipe band from Pakistan that were denied visas to travel to Britain, now it is the country's blind cricket team. Pakistan's blind cricketers are the reigning world champions. The squad members have just finished attending a nine-day training camp, ahead of what was supposed to be a four-match UK tour (on the invitation of Blind Cricket England and Wales). But the team's visa applications have been rejected. The UK Border Agency says it did not have sufficient evidence to be convinced the players would return to Pakistan once the tour was over. 'Hurt and insulted' Sitting in his Islamabad home, beside a table packed with sporting trophies, is the chairman of the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council, and former blind cricket captain Syed Sultan Shah. It feels like we are being denied our rights Syed Sultan Shah, Chairman of the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council He says he is stunned by the decision: We provided letters from our council, and from the Pakistan Cricket Board, who confirmed they would cover all costs, he says. The English Cricket Board supplied our names and passport numbers. The Pakistan ministry of sport gave us official leave to travel. We all signed affidavits to say we would return, and if we did not, our families would be penalised. What more could we do? When we toured the UK in 2002 and 2006, nobody stayed behind. We just want to play cricket. Mr Shah says the players had all taken leave from work, and that hundreds of thousands of rupees (thousands of pounds) had been spent on the training camp, new kit and on the visa applications themselves. But it's not the money. It feels like we are being denied our rights. We are all very hurt, very disturbed and feel very insulted by this, he says. No apology The UK Border Agency insists its ruling is justified. We will make no apology for maintaining tough border controls created to prevent abuse of the immigration system, it states. If applications do not contain the necessary evidence and we are not satisfied individuals will return at the end of their visit their visas will be refused. The statement adds that UKBA is committed to facilitating sporting, cultural and arts exchanges. Eighteen of the 21 Pakistani players and officials that applied to travel, including the manager and assistant manager, are totally or partially blind. Many were part of the team that won the World Cup on home soil in 2006, at a tournament in which England also competed. As a blind person, playing cricket changed my life, says Mr Shah. I can't tell you how much confidence it gives us, and what it took to win the World Cup. But this has really been a big blow. And we are worried we won't be able to defend our title in the future. The next World Cup is scheduled to be held in England. To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Young achievers steal the show
Bangalore: Sixteen-year-old visually challenged student Kavya dreams of becoming a lecturer. Her disability has not kept her from pursuing her vision. Hailing from a poor family in Devanahalli, she scored 80% in her SSLC exams. Kavya was one among the awardees felicitated by Governor HR Bharadwaj on the occasion of Independence Day in Raj Bhavan, on Saturday. Another achiever was Shivananda Pattanashetty from Saidapura, Bagalkot. After losing his father at a young age, he was brought up by his mother, a daily wage labourer. Without much help, he scored highest marks in SSLC exams in his taluk. Sushmitha Dhanapal was another such face. Born with mobility and cognitive problems, the 29-year-old works as assistant librarian in Telecommunication Organisation. [AI] Read your way to CAT
Reading skills are important to succeed in CAT. A considerable proportion of the marks in the English section is allotted to reading comprehension (RC). 80 out of the total 360 marks allotted to the section in the test amply highlight its importance. Successful handling of the section needs the ability to read and understand quickly and then, to interpret the same for specific questions. Good reading skills can go a long way in enhancing aspirants' performance in CAT. For all its importance, however, reading skill development is also often the most neglected part of CAT preparations. This stems either from a wrong notion that such skill is innate or from a feeling that we have always been reading as part of our education and hence, no need to improve it. However, many aspirants fail to understand that reading skill is important not just in the RC section, but in the entire paper. The test has in general had either a large number of questions or fewer but difficult-to-understand questions making it difficult for candidates with poor reading skills to go through the complete paper. Every year, many candidates fail to pass the exam because they miss out on a number of easy questions, as they are unable to read all the questions in the paper. The only way out of the problem is to improve one's reading skills. The reading skill consists of two parts- Reading speed and comprehension skill. In previous CAT papers, a reading speed of around 300-350 words per minute led to a good performance. Comprehension skill involves the ability to understand the idea, flow of thoughts and logic in the passage as well as being able to remember or quickly locate critical words, phrases and numbers. Reading skill development must therefore be handled at two levels - Improving speed and enhancing comprehension skills. Reading speed is a function of reading style. Aspects of reading style that reduce reading speed include vocalising and sub-vocalising (pronouncing words in the mind as we read them). Another factor that influences reading speed is the eye-span. The greater the eye-span, the fewer the number of eye-movements required to cover each line, resulting in faster reading. The speed is also dependent on familiarity with the subject of the article. Re: [AI] How could a blind man watch the snow?
I thought it was a wonderful idea -to touch and feel the snow or just listen to the snow crackle and understanding its presence in silence. Beautiful and very poetic. I think the blind man analogy is basically for effect. Subramani -Original Message- From: accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Kotian, H P Sent: Monday, August 17, 2009 10:35 AM To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: [AI] How could a blind man watch the snow? Hello all I am allowing this posting for members to reflect on the mindset / enquiry; prevailing about prevalent notions on visual disability. Harish Kotian Moderator hi not sure whether this is an OT. Thought this might interest some of AI members. If you share this view please post it. regards rohith Saying it with silence There was this very beautiful line that I read in Orhan Pamuk's novel, 'My Name Is Red'. He wrote about a blind man watching the snowfall and smiling to himself. That line stayed with me for a long, long time. How could a blind man watch the snow? I pondered. I know that when the sight is taken away, the other senses become sharper. The blind man must have felt the cold air around him with the tiny snowflakes brushing his cheek; he must have caught a puffy, wet ball in his hand and had felt it melt in his palms. But did he hear the snow falling? Somehow I believe that he actually listened to the snowfall, more than he felt it. He must have listened to the silence of the falling snow. He listened, because he was silent inside, in his own wonderful and special way. Often silence makes people uncomfortable, accustomed as they are to the noise and commotion of the world, but silence is all about coming home to ourselves. When we sit in silence we relax and slip into an exquisite nothingness. We look within and drop our opinionated mind and learn to feel everything around us more deeply. When the incessant chatter of the mind stops and we let the quietness around submerge us, something sacred is born within. Nietzsche said that our greatest experiences are our quietest moments. Needless to say, it is only in silence that we are capable of listening. Like that blind man watching the snowfall and smiling to himself, we learn to listen more when we are silent. Silence is the basic ingredient for entering into our intuitive mind and to resist the cacophony of meaningless noises outside. It is interesting to note how Silent and Listen have same letters but are arranged differently. We humans have a tendency to talk more and listen less; much of it is because we have forgotten the art of waiting and allowing ourselves to grow silent within. Nature has no trouble in remembering this art. Nature thrives on silence. We never hear the footsteps of moon when it appears on the sky. We don't hear a loud bang when the sun comes out and the stars burst open in the sky. Their arrival is always wrapped in a glorious silence. Look how the tree knows it! It remains bare, beautiful and still; waiting for the new leaves, knowing that the old has gone and the new will soon be coming. The tree waits in silence. Just like tree, when we are silent and waiting, something beautiful inside us keeps on growing and it is this stillness and silence that gives birth to creativity. Often it happens that when we wait in silence, life rushes back to fill those crevices in our souls. There are times when silence becomes the most potent way of communication and is more effective than words. We all have at least one memory when we have faced that eloquent silence of our elders such as parents or teachers when we have felt a cold fear at the bristling silence of their fury. When their silence had scared us more than angry words. When just one quiet look had had us behaving better than a harsh reprimand or scolding. Lovers all over the world are said to communicate with silence. Understand each other's silence. The famous telepathy between two people who have strong feelings for each other happens in a compelling silence. In a business world the salesmen are taught the art of persuasive silence. After he has urged the potential client to buy some product and the customer is contemplating quietly over what the salesman has described, the well trained salesman remains absolutely silent during this important hiatus. Often he gains his sale by using this important tool. Undeniably, silence needs a special kind of power and authority of mind and saying it with silence needs a certain 'command of language'. To say nothing is often more difficult than expressing the anger, love and betrayal with words. However, being silent with a natural and calm stillness within is like a spiritual reflex. Analyze it too much or think too much about it and it degenerates itself into something superficial and edgy. If we become self-conscious about silence then we begin to work against it. We rush to fill it with inane talks and
Re: [AI] Interactive CD for competitive exams
Pranam Sir, Certainly a good idea. I know about one such CD, when I was preparing for clat, my father bought a cd for me of Maths. That was prepared by Pebbles. In that cd, we could choose How many questions to display, in how much time we want to do that, and once we solve a particular question, it also shows that how much time you have taken to solve the question. Obviously, solution to the given problem if answer is not right. So for example, I could choose 20 questions to do in 10 minutes, I could do first question in 40 seconds and second in 21 seconds and so on. Sounds really fantastic no? But here comes the problem of accessibility! The audio of the questions was provided But: 1. We are unable to select anything. Say how many questions, how much time etc... 2. Jaws was not reading anything since the content was designed in flash and accessibility was a major problem with this product as accessibility guidelines were not followed while creating it. One more product of the same company I remember, it was for English learning but again that was totally inaccessible. This particular company and few more like times group, india today group etc produce excellent products in CDs, but none of them is accessible. I also contacted the pebbles people, but failed to get any reply from their side. Another example of rapidex computer course can be given, they give one cd with their book, in which they provide video mode and audio with video mode, but again the cd is not accessible with screen readers. Re: [AI] needy help require in fire fox add in
Hey, I think I have not been clear What I want to do is this. When you go to Send Space or Rapid Share, you press the link of the file to be downloaded. If it is done through FDM, there is --as I understand-- an option to schedule the download. For example, if I want the download to start at 3.00 am in the morning, I schedule it accordingly. But, unfortunately, the files never get downloaded in spite of keeping the system on and the connectivity at full strength. Once the download doesn't happen, I try pressing shift+S in order to restart the download. Even then, the download doesn't happen. I have to delete the current download, go back to the original link, click on the download link and re-schedule the whole thing afresh. Now, my question is why the scheduled downloads are not happening, while I could download anything currently? Re: [AI] Pakistan blind cricketers denied UK visa
This is plain stupid. What do they want in order to feel satisfied? DO they want signatures on their bloods? Now of course, we understand why Britain is not safe despite having the world's biggest database of DNA information, covering almost the whole country with CCTV and guarding their borders. Re: [AI] needy help require in fire fox add in
That is because, You see, where as sendspace or rapidshare, allow, instant downloading. I mean, if you start as soon as you click on okay button, it will start. If you tell it to schedule, or Let me decide later, start manually, the links get disactivated. That's because they want to see that the free users, dont get any resuming facility, and just to make sure, things are at right condition. Even if the file was downloaded 50% and if your internet drops, its gone. You'll need to restart the download, by clicking on the original link, because, the old link expires, as soon as the manager stops it. Even though the connection might be switched on, but the download has been paused. So, the sendspace or rapidshare, understand the links as pause = stop. So its no use to schedule it. You can schedule the downloads, only when you have a premium account on a site like sendspace or rapidshare. I see fileflyer allows resuming, And mediafire's link is active for 1 day. after a day, the link gets de activated. I mean the link after you click on download button. It is a blow to International Cricket for the Blind for sure. George, many of these cricketers have traveled earlier too. There seem to be very less possibilities of denying visas due to documentation problems, else they would have been highlighted as a defence by them. Firstly Thanks a lot for the enormous responses to my query. Glad, that a lot of competent buddies came in with productive inferences, and have preferred helping me. So, what should I do now, as a lot of suggestions came in, what’s the final conclusion? As told, the harddrive had been completely formatted once, and still the problem persists. Some of you have suggested reformatting with all the partitions, while some have suggested using good antiviruses. one more brutal has observed, that the official websites of the antivirus softwares had been blocked by the viruses of my system, or something. What happening is that, no website of antivirus is getting open, as the message comes “can not find server”. Note: I’ve already tried with quickheal, avira, caspersky, avast, etc, not even opening the websites. What’s the suggestion now? I mean, a final conclusion? If I go to format the whole system again, what are the things need to have care at most, so the problem don’t persist again? Inputs required. Aisha sahani. Hello sir: What Amar has said in his mail is very true. Many companies or the manifacturers of such Cd's, hardly consider the issue of accessibility. I also bought many CD's to improve my French and English, but found them to be very useless as they cannot be accessed with our screen readers. Re: [AI] extremely severe problem, help please!
Okay my suggestion: format is the right option for you. Before that, make sure, You have backed up the entire drive what ever is required by you. Second: Make sure hope so, that you have one of the latest antivirus with you. third: When you format the drives, make sure, you dont put your data there. Before putting any data, or connecting to the internet, just install your antivirus first, after the drivers are installed. I mean, drivers first, and then the antivirus. Then after you've installed the antivirus, connect to the internet, and receive the updates. Next: Final, put back your data, and enjoy. and while putting the data back, make sure, if any virus alert is shown, make sure you take an action, like deleting it, and quaranteing it. I prefer delete anyway. Okay next: if you were putting the data back, and antivirus alerted you that there was a virus in it, make sure, you get rid of the CD/DVD after putting back the data. Sir have you ever tried any cd based product of Universal Publications? I am asking because I will order their cyber law cd but don't know about accessibility. Sir Aisha and Samual bhaiya, Don't you all think that instead of using antivirus you need to use such a product which has all like antivirus, antispyware and antirootkit? Re: [AI] interactive Cd's
Rightly said, we must write letters and do efforts. What I remember is, one of the organization in India is talking to publishers and asking for E-copies wherever possible. When I spoke to few course organizers and asked them to provide me soft copy, they said that there is some copyright issue involved in doing that so they couldn't provide me soft copies. I don't know about Indian Copyright Act and the problem involved in it, so won't comment on it. In US, section 508 that is what I know talks about accessibility. But in India first we have to change laws and even before that we need to make people or publishers aware that how we use computers, what is accessibility and how can they provide us accessible material. I remember previously few listers said that work is going on to improve our copyright act but don't know exactly everything about it. But yes, if that treety which was failed recently of WIPO which was allowing to make accessible material, if that gets passed in November-December when again the confrance is, then it will be easier for us to improve our copyright act that's what I think. Just now red Vanshi sir's reply, so to answer that, firstly the program needs to have accessible interface then only we can make scripts for that. Means, the program creators must have followed accessibility guidelines, then we can create scripts for that. Because scripts make it easier to use the program but it does not introduce accessibility. Don't know weather Java applications would be a good example of it, but if there is accessibility in Java application and then if we use access bridge, then those accessibility features can be used. Don't know weather its a good example or not but just trying to make understand. - Original Message - From: aisha sahani mailtoaishasah...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, August 17, 2009 6:31 PM Subject: Re: [AI] interactive Cd's true, i've bought some CDs for solving income tex questions, but could not identify anything with the help of jaws. at the outset, i thought that this may be the incompetency of my own, but i've discovered the problems with other visually impaired folks as well, which is really unfortunate. if i'm correct, US is pretty strict in the accessibility matters, and their fedral law regarding accessibility of matterials is rigid enough, which compells obligations on the manyfacturers to produce accessible prodicts. we must learn the same in india, because it's high time to do that, as this may be called our rising period. from my perspective, influencial people of community should take the responsibility towards making things accessible, at least the studdy matterials. for this, indivisual letters can be written to the major manifacturers, and government should be pressurised via different mediums meanwhile. intelectuals, let's make a difference! aisha sahani. Re: [AI] extremely severe problem, help please!
My suggestion is to have antivirus installed before installing drivers, some downloaded drivers may also invoke viruses. To my knowledge and experience, have confirmed virus on some branded driver CD. Make sure while formatting you are not connected to network. Above all, make sure to use NTFS Full / Complete option to format the drive. Lastly, to improve performance, try to install drivers using XP Add hardware wizard and not the autorun programs/application supplied on a CD. They add many unwanted things or if you can customize the installation then go for it. Re: [AI] interactive CD's
I just don't know for how long we will wait for laws to do right things anyways. Script writing is an alternate option to enable access and the chances are that the application will still not be 100% accessible and above all, the application should be accessible in general that is it should be usable with any or most screen readers. The Section 508, do not says the bla application should be accessible with JAWS or Window Eyes rather it says, the design of the application should render proper information through accepted accessibility standards. Copyright laws can not protect anything, students may still copy the information passed using inaccessible application to their notebooks and the notes will be in circulation for ages. (still remember getting Photostats of notes in college having dates 5 years back) and on top of anything all were the articles and paragraph from copyrighted books!!! hi, use a paid anti virus service which includes virus protection, spam protection and root kit protection. make sure it had a webmail protection such as a web guard, a mail guard, a spam guard, and finally a fire wall. you can get them from any premium security suit protections. Yes Mukesh bhaiya you are reaching to the list. Bhaiya you told right about copyright law, but when I asked them, they said the law does not allow us to make the data available into e-copy. Your experience shows the standard of the so called educated and 21st century people living in the country. Talking about publishers, one of the publishers S Chand, provides accessible material that is what I heard. I also red on their website I think that we can provide you accessible material in whatever way means in cd, in html etc you want. However I have not tried yet. Re: [AI] extremely severe problem, help please!
I would fairly say so to use a all around antivirus, but I guess now since it is fairly effected, and the system is slow, its better to re-install the operating system. Yeah, I guess each antivirus would have its rootkit protection as well. Well if it doesn't I'm not sure, you can get a spyware protection, like spybat search and destroy, or Malwarebytes antivirus, etc. So antivirus plays a main role here. Sure dont connect to the internet, without any security. [AI] Please pray for early recovery of Shivani and Vikas from Access Ability
Dear list, There is little shocking news that i learnt today and thought many of you know Access Ability's Vikas and Shivani who recently were married. There were off to Himanchal for a personal trip with their family where their car was hit by a tanker from behind badly injuring all the four occupants. Vikas father succumbed to injuries, while all others are recuperating in hospital. Vikas is still in Chandigarh while Shivani and her mother-in-law were shifted to Max. http://samachaar.in/Shimla/Delhi_magistrate_killed_in_Himachal_accident_88655/ Reqest you to pray for their early revocery. Hai, 1. Please format and repartition your harddrive completely. 2. While formatting, do not select the quick option of formatting. 3. install the operating system using a different disk rather than using the disk which you have used so far. 4. Re: [AI] extremely severe problem, help please!
Respected Subramani Sir the Great, Fragmentation occurs when the operating system cannot or will not allocate enough contiguous space to store a complete file as a unit, but instead puts parts of it in gaps between other files (usually those gaps exist because they formerly held a file that the operating system has subsequently deleted or because the operating system allocated excess space for the file in the first place). Larger files and greater numbers of files also contribute to fragmentation and consequent performance loss. Defragmentation attempts to alleviate these problems. A defragmentation program must move files around within the free space available to undo fragmentation. This is a memory intensive operation and cannot be performed on a file system with no free space. The above explaination was copied from one site. Now I will try to explain what does formatting means. When we format our computer, our operating system gets deleted. Before we can use any hard disk, we need to setup some basic structure like partitions. Now when we format hard disk, we delete the operating system, the temperary files, the unused registry keys and lot more things. When we use format, there are two options one is quick format and other is normal format. If we use quick format, the temperary files etc are not deleted. I always recommend normal format. With this, I will also talk about the term wipe space. You must have hurd that even if you have deleted some file from computer, you can recover it using data recovery softwares. Have you ever wondered why so? Because there is one term wipe space. It stores the information of deleted files etc. So if normal format is used, we delete that wipe space too. If you are using CCleaner, then in advance options you must have seen a check box of clear wipe space. But it consumes lot of time. Sir I am not a tech expert, but still sharing whatever I know. So please excuse me for the errors. I really don't know about the precautions to be taken while defragging. For defragmenting, please do as this: Go to StartAll programsAccesseriesSystem toolsDisk Defragmenter. Select the drive to be defragmented from the list view, once analyze it, and then click on defragment button. Formatting requires sighted assistance. Backup the data before formatting. Insert the windows cd, if it autoruns, exit. Restart, and keep pressing enter right after restart means, before your windows welcome screen comes. Like how we go into bios or safe mode etc. Pressing enter should start booting from cd, if it doesn't, bios settings needs to be changed. Can't describe that, it is bit difficult. Once successfully booted from cd, follow the screen instructions, and you can format. Again, sighted assistance is required everywhere while formatting since no sound is there to help us. I don't say formatting is difficult or risky like other computer experts, the only thing is that it requires your attention and understanding of the instructions. For sure, once attention goes and misunderstanding comes, everything is gone! And otherwise, no risk, no game! Hope I was of bit help. Re: [AI] extremely severe problem, help please!
In Simple Language: Formatting is cleaning the house by throwing everything out and by reinstallation you try to get new/old stuff you need where is defragmentation is the process of arranging stuff in wish to get your house cleaner. In the process some things may get broken hence will have to be replaced. Technically: Formatting is the process of erasing the data from the disk and making it ready to store new data where as defragmentation is the process of collecting and arranging various parts of data of same file which wer at different location. This happens because we save data in the same file and there is not enough space on the disk to store the data in continuity of the previous data hence the system store different part of a file at multiple location. This inturn makes the file retrieval slow making the system slower. Hope this clarifies some if not all.

Re: [AI] How could a blind man watch the snow?
I totally agree with you, Harish. Just as you've written, I am totally blind, yet I don't feel blackness at any time. Something keeps moving all the time and I always visualize people and even sounds and scenes. As for the article is concerned, yes, primary point is precisely as you said, how a blind man experiences a phenomena like falling snow, although the writer has given too much emphasis on the word silence. So our friends should not lose sight of the main point, not getting distracted either by the beauty of the words or by the absence of more details on how the blind man actually felt. In fact, if any of us has actually felt a snow fall, he/she must come forward and tell us about it. Regards, Sandeep At 06:49 AM 18-08-09, you wrote: Hi Subramani May be, However, the primary inquiry is how a blind person experience a visual stimuli. He later goes on to hypothise by the use of silence. How can a blind person feel happy in a snowfall which is a visual treat. How can he elicit response without the stimuli. This I guess is what he was trying to answer. For a sighted vision is the most important sensory input. experiencing snow is a multi sensoryactivity. So you have the touch, the ambient noise and even some arroma floating in that area which in entirety contributes to the feeling of joy. Absence of this visual input seems such a calaminity that the sighted can't appreciate the other sensory organs and dub that the other sense organs become sharper. This is what I call the mindset. There is one more thing that one can share on this subject. I am as such totally blind and can't percieve light. However, I don't experience darkness even under total dark condition. There is always something moving and some light and I guess my visual cortex would be active. With the cues comming in I tend to build up a visual frame and I don't do it deliberately. If I read a book which is well described visually and the voice is well modulated I do enjoy it visually as I was watching a movie. How is it with you guys? Should be interesting to exchange notes on it. I do fear this would generate heat on the list. I'll pull the plug when it becomes very hot. I have culled out the original posting for it was very long and those wanting to refer to it pl go to the first posting on it. More wonderful thing is to have it discussed in the list Wonder whether it has become a place to discuss philosophy! Yes, superimposition of blindness to bring home value of silence is a cheap gimmick and I have heard long sermons as to how closing your outer eyes or having them closed as a result of blindness is a wonderful blessing as it opens inner so-called eyes and elevates you to a higher level of appreciation etc. etc. The above article, as per my opinion, falls into the same category of non-rational subjective experience without any useful objective appeal... and make a blind person escape goat, too bad. The famous telepathy between two people who have strong

Re: [AI] How could a blind man watch the snow?
Okay, if the point is to have one consider whether a blind person can visualize the things in absence of visual stimuli and enjoy the experience using remaining senses coupled with such a visualization, then I would say that a person can visualize only to the extent he/she has actually seen the light or objects with eyes in the past. Here, the people who say we can visualize are late blind. I, being congenitally blind and having light perception, can visualize to the same extent as I have actually seen the things. For example, I could distinguish a bus from a truck by seeing its front hood only in the broad day light. So, I can visualize, not even in the dreams, the whole composition of a truck. Essentially, I mean, a person who has not visually witnessed the snow falling and glowing, or does not have any such analogous visual experience, can not visualize it in the same way, she can only borrow its descriptions half-heartedly, along with other sensory inputs. To give another example, I can never visualize beauty of the female form that is seen with eyes and is sufficient to uproot vishwamitra from his penance, but others who are blind can, for they have witnessed the appearance of a person visually. Still, I opine that article was not making this point. It was extolling silence and hinting at the possibility of a blind man enjoying the snowfall primarily to his being silent witness... However, I primarily want to know whether there are such CDs for competitive exams like Banking, Civil services etc. on various topics. [AI] College books just a click away
College books just a click away For students who have just stepped into college, a book bank could be a valuable resource. With the aim of helping students, Reach Book Bank has created an exclusive online facility that would help students use and access reference books. An online-only company, www.reachbookbank.com, is the brainchild of Shweta S., a young entrepreneur. I explored the possibility of creating a web-based book bank which would be able to of fer value to students, , she says. All the business is over phone or e-mail. They take orders for books and deliver them at people's homes or colleges within a day or two. Reach also has a separate charity section. All books they receive as donations, are made available free of cost to deserving students. ## Adieu. Saravanan.R __ I would like to learn a lot from you all.
