 Please provide guidance and resources.
 Thanks

With the same credentials, I can log in from one desktop and not from others.
It throws up "This user is not active"

[AI] Blindfolding sighted to sensitize causing more harm than good

2016-04-13 Thread Arvind A
https://longmoreinstitute.wordpress.com/2016/04/11/teaching-the-sighted-about-blindness-in-a-way-that-doesnt-suck-leave-your-blindfolds-at-home/

Teaching the Sighted about Blindness in a Way that Doesn’t Suck (Leave your
Blindfolds at Home!)
Posted by esbeitiks in Uncategorized

For years, well-intentioned teachers have used simulation activities to
teach sighted people about blindness. You put on a blindfold, stagger
around a building for a few minutes, and typically rip the blindfold off at
the end with a newfound gratitude that you aren’t one of those poor, tragic
blind people. Understandably, blind people have criticized this educational
“tool” for causing more harm than good, when all it simulates is the first
few moments of seeing nothing. Who wouldn’t be completely traumatized by
being thrown into the world without learning the many alternative ways of
doing things?

After taking a tour of the state-of-the-art San Francisco LightHouse for
the Blind and Visually Impaired that will open June 10, I am excited to
report that new options are coming, (and you can leave the blindfold at
home!). Just teach your students about the design and access features in
this new building, and maybe if you’re really lucky, like I was, you too
can take a guided tour with project manager Elizabeth Freer (sighted) and
project architect Chris Downey (blind). This lesson will leave sighted
folks with a stronger grasp of how blind people navigate the world and how
really smart design to minimize barriers might make doing it even easier in
the future.

The building is located at 1155 Market street. LightHouse bought the entire
building, but will occupy the top floors 9-11 and rent the other spaces.

Here’s what happens when blind people have the clout and the resources to
call the shots with an appreciation for beauty and a sense of playfulness.
From floor to ceiling, the project team has worked eighteen-hour days to
ensure that the building’s design incorporates what can only be described
as an aesthetic of blind and low vision users. Different textures on the
floor distinguish between highly trafficked paths and workspaces. Lights
and sounds direct people towards exits and determine what direction they
are facing (as 95% of blind or low vision people see light). Acoustic
designs throughout provide important cues, from how to operate the
audio-visual equipment to what else is going on in the community space.

Chris Downey holds white can and wears hardhat next to Elizabeth Freer,
also in hard hat, as they both talk to one of the building workers.
A brief pause on the tour while Chris and Elizabeth test the sound of the
newly installed fans in the training kitchen. Another obstacle: safety from
fires vs. the need to minimize all background noise.

And it isn’t all utilitarian. Wood on the handrails and the edges of tables
are satisfying to touch, just as the floor texture was also chosen so that
cane tips had a pleasant sound and feel for users getting from one of the
plush small offices to one of the many open areas to share coffee and
converse.

Together, every detail lets visitors know that they’re in the center of a
very happening place to be. As blind architect Chris Downey put it for San
Francisco magazine, “We wanted to convey the idea that this is an exciting
place and promote a sense of possibility as opposed to the idea of fear.”

I won’t spoil all the building’s secrets before their big launch, but the
whole experience blew me away (and luckily for me, I will get to visit this
space often as the Longmore Institute partners with the LightHouse to run
Superfest: International Disability Film Festival). After the tour,
Longmore Institute Director Catherine Kudlick remarked, “I was near tears
at a few points. It really feels like the dawn of a new era for blind
folk!” But even better yet, the design team didn’t limit their focus to
blindness and considered all forms of access, for example, for Deaf people,
wheelchair riders, little people, the needs of families. At the Longmore
Institute, we know how challenging this can be from our efforts to maximize
access while designing the “Patient No More” exhibit. Competing
accommodations can be difficult to negotiate, but the art of striking the
right balance is so very worth it when it succeeds, bringing different
disability communities together.

So, educators who feel that impulse to teach your sighted students about
blindness, look to the SF LightHouse instead! When the building opens,
sighted visitors will see people new to blindness training alongside old
hands updating their tech and cooking skills. They’ll see blind staff
people working in nearly every aspect of operations, including Executive
Director Bryan Bashin.

As Paul Longmore once said, “Prejudice is a far greater problem to overcome
than any impairment; discrimination is a bigger obstacle than any
disability.” Here’s to replacing those traditional simulations of blindness
that leave participants feeling sad

I agree to haresh sir. product development should be done with proper
testing by real users. unfortunately recently many many programmers, IIT
people, have launched devics, apps but they are all limited or not really
useful. these people never consult properly with blind. I remember
somebody mentioned accessible chesss board what is it? where it is? it was
mentioned blind organizzation helped? and so many other android apps.
one good success story is of I I t Delhi smart cane. they did good testing
with blind group of people.
we need usable products not just symbolism development in the name of blind
for publicity. Simple eye is a really good concept. we need better
understanding or someone should explain it properly. at present we are lost
on how to use it efficiently and is it replacement for talk back or it is a
partial product?

please help and provide info on simple eye.

To start with, our problem is to understand what this app can do and its

I think, for this, it is necessary to have a podcast which gives in
detail how the various tasks can be done entirely by gestures without
looking at the screen. For this, you need to train at least 1 blind person
 who can do the recording.

Another point to consider is that the app should be fully compatible with
Talkback and there should not be any conflict how various tasks are done
 by Talkback.

Let us know in which city your developers are based where we can get a
blind volunteer to get trained up.

It is very much necessary to work this project up having our close
participation in the lifecycle of this product.

As a concept, I liked this product but I am afraid, I could not do much

On a final note, we have a dedicated list for mobile phone and its

 Hello Friends,

I am the founder at Kriyate, the company behind SimplEye. I wish to thank
you all for your excited response to SimplEye.

Through groups like yours, organisations in network, direct conversations
with users and on social media, we learnt a lot of feedback about the
launcher. I understand that the simplicity and Braille typing are the most
appreciated features of the app and request for more features is the most
 common demand.

I wish to share that we are an India based company, with all design,
development and testing being done here. Hence, we prioritized India for
our product launch. And now that we are hearing so much about our product,
we want to make sure we include all your suggestions in product upgrades
and make sure you get absolutely the best experience and nothing less. Our
intention was to start with a basic platform and make it super-useful with
your help. I see we are on that path.

To this end, I am covering some of the requests below:

 - Application Quit bug: we noticed application wasn't quitting properly
and was reopening on some phones. We have corrected this and new version is
 available for download.

 - Braille Keyboard gestures: most users were very fast in typing but found
space and delete gestures as speed breakers, we have improved this (and
other gesture) and it will be available soon after Diwali.

 - Braille Keyboard as a separate app: I know many of you loved the idea of
having this keyboard in your android launcher. We have taken this up too,
and it will be available by end of October.

 - Also, as a bonus, we are adding Navigation feature in the launcher. You
will be able to use this to locate yourself, hear the direction on compass,
search for locations and step-by-step navigate to them, and save
 destinations and markers on way.

Friends, I again want to emphasise that we are closer home than you think!
We will be happy to upgrade our app to better suit your needs so thank you
for your suggestions and keep them coming.

there are nogs working in the name of blind welfare recruit 100% sighted
staff untrained and not with helping attitude. Very very few cases where
sighted are able to equally understand and empathize with blind persons’
life and needs. Mostly that happens in the cases when they have family or
close one with vision impairment. rest ngos recruited sighted people are
just so called trainers doing 6 to 7 hours comfortable job doing nothing
out of the way.

recruitment of sighted teachers in blind schools should be reduce. also
the special B.Ed. programmes for the blind should not be occupied by the
 sighted trainees.
on the other hand, in the highcourt of bilaspur in the case nfb vs cg
government, cg government pleaded that they could not find qualified blind
candidates in chhattisgarh to fill the vacancies reserved for the blind. it
is right upto some extent, because there was no blind applicant for the
vacancies of teachers in social welfare deptt of chhattisgar. in such cases
government has no option to fill the vacancies with other disabilities or
with the sighted candidates. however, the highcourt has given time for 6
month to the secretary to excercise the matter again.
Most of the NGOs are running shops on the name of blind welfare. but,
the case may be same for the sighted people where the NGOs are working for
 various welfare programmes.

Subject: Re: [AI] braille BUDGET 2014

Lets start with the fact that Braille is important even today-there is
no dispute or difference on this statement amongst us.
Now lets see the issues in perspective-
 1. We have a problem with texts not reaching the students in time for
the academic year.So the government has budgeted for improvement of old
braille presses and setting up new ones. Great laudable initiative.
 a. Has anyone amongst us spoken about the quality of reading by our so
called braille teachers? Unless we demand quality education from both
inclusive and special schools we are not going to go further. The basics of
education for a blind child is braille and I am sorry to see the condition
of braille reading in this country. For this we can blame our teachers and
for the bad quality of teachers we can blame the NGOs to some extent, who
train and certify such teachers. Who is going to bell this cat?

The problem of material may soon get over because of this budget but
then who is going to use this material and who is going to decipher it for
 our young ones?

 b. I cannot comment on the financial issues of running a braille press
because I have never gone into that area with any NGO. there are many who
 can comment on this issue.
 c. The quality of material churned out by these Braille presses- I
cannot comment from my own knowledge but I am told by many people who use
these presses that the quality is not so good now because the proof reading
 is not good enough.
 d. The issue of distribution, merging with technology and widening the
reach of these presses others who deal with these matters can fill us in
 with.

 2. Notes with Braille marking-great initiative on paper
This has been in the pipeline for quite a while.
 a. The possibility of actually being able to distinguish marks whether
braille or raised numbers or some tactile indicators depends upon the paper
used and on how we use the notes. Therefore I think it is a great initiative
but may not result in much. RBI is going to come out with Rs. 10 notes in
plastic-maybe that can be a test case for the tactile markings.
 b. The number of persons with congenitle blindness is reducing because
of better nutrition, eradication of smallpox etc. The number of late blind
is increasing for various reasons including the fact that people are living
longer and may get age related diseases so the kinds of users is changing.
This does not take away from the fact that braille is important but
acceptance of universal design is important too.

We must also focus on the other 3 items mentioned in the budget-all
these have been on the anvil for a while.

 Also we

Thanks for all the suggestions. But
These guys had come to JJ hospital Mumbai, after being refused at
Jalgoan Civil hospital, and they were redirected back. Matter of
jurisdiction was the reason given.

What is the disability upon which a certificate has to be given?

Does this vary from state to state or hospital to hospital?

These guys, due to their economic and educational background, are not

them a lot.

Dylexia would fall under the Mental Retardation category and not Mental
Illness under the existing framework of disabilities defined under the
 PWD
Act - though the two are very different from each other. However, CBSE
doesn't insist on the disability certificate which may be required under
the PWD Act to avail various concessions for dyslexia.

Hence, a certificate from a psychiatrist/psychologist should do. However,
it would be advisable to approach a competent medical board (generally the
district hospitals) with the existing medical papers from the specialist
doctors etc for for issuance of a disability certificate.

 Dear Arvind,
Creating Templates is a good idea for letterheads. You will need to create
separate templates for different paper sizes.
To create a template I suggest you take the following steps
 1. - in a new word documenttype out the company name etc in the header
and address in the footer. Format them as you like it and you can also
include logos. Adjust the margins and the paper size. Get sighted
 assistance
if necessary to make sure the appearance is as desired.
 2. now save this file as a word template. In the save as dialog box in the
save as type combo box make sure you choose Word Template *.DOT
Now whenever you will open this template, a copy of it will open
automatically in a new document. This new document will have your letter
head. You should type out the letters and take printouts.
The templates will not change unless you specifically open them for
 editing.
 Hope this helps.
 Prashant

 letter1 on carriage of persons.pdf

 2

 No.: 21-1/2010-AED

 Date: 13th Jun 2011

 To

The CEOs of all Scheduled Domestic Airlines

 Subject: Carriage of incapacitated passengers.

 Sir,

DGCA has issued Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) Section 3, Series M, Part

 I
 on

Carriage by Air of Persons with Disability and/or Persons with Reduced
 Mobility. In

accordance with the provisions of the above mentioned CAR, no airline
 shall
 refuse to

carry persons with disability or persons with reduced mobility. Airlines
 are
 also required to

formulate a detailed procedure for carriage of disabled persons or persons
 with reduced

mobility and publish the same on their website.

It has been observed that information available on the website of
 scheduled

domestic airlines in this regard is very sketchy and incomplete. Further,
 reports have been

received in this office that one of the scheduled domestic airlines has
 denied boarding to

the blind passenger. It may be stated that blind passengers fall in the
 category of

incapacitated passengers who do not require any medical clearance or
 special
 forms and

only require special assistance at the airport or in
 embarking/disembarking.

In view of the above, all the airlines are directed to formulate a
 detailed
 policy for

carriage of disabled persons or persons with reduced mobility including
 blind and publish the

same on their respective website. All the airlines are also directed to
 make
 the same available

at different airports and also sensitize their employees in this regard.

Non-compliance of the above instructions will be viewed very seriously.

 Yours faithfully,

 264

 (Lalit Gupta)

 Deputy Director General

Re: [AI] An Excel question - would appreciate a quick response

2011-02-08 Thread Arvind Bhartiya
Hi! Vamshi:
Data sometimes spills out of the cell and jaws will not normally alert
you if that has happened. But there is a way that you are alerted in
such a case once you move to that particular cell.
Activate jaws verbosity by pressing insert v. Then hit c couple of
times till you hear cell text visibility . By default this is off.
press space to turn it on and hit enter.
Now if you come over a cell with data spilling out jaws will alert you
by saying for example cell a1 overlapps to cell b1.
This is an indication that data in cell a1 is overflowing to cell b1
and you can do the needful.
Hope this answers your query.

Alternatively, you can go to format menu, cells, alignment tab, and
wrap the text of that particular cell so that the content in the cell
gets adjusted in more than one line without increasing the width of

But I don't know how to know which are the columns that need to be

its an autoUpdatable kind of box which will expend automatically and

Re: [AI] Now listen to Kama Sutra anywhere, anytime

2010-08-06 Thread Arvind Bhartiya
Dear Rajesh,
Pasted below is the article as it appeared in the Times of India today.

Imagine having to read out an instruction from Kamasutra while trying
to get the move right – difficult right?

This age-old flaw has now been taken care of, by releasing the world’s
most famous sex manual in the form of audio books.

Now all you have to do is listen to the audio to get your moves right.

Beautiful Books, of London, has commissioned actor Tanya Franks to
read aloud from the treatise, including its most notorious chapter,
On Sexual Union, which describes 64 different ways of making love.

The books can be downloaded for 8.99 dollars.

Kamasutra is based on ancient Hindu philosophies and was first
translated into English in 1883 under the guidance of Victorian
explorer Richard Burton.

Now there’s no need to feel embarrassed by reading a copy of this
wonderful and important book in public – simply download it on to your
mp3 player and liven up your commute to work, The Guardian quoted
Simon Petherick, the managing director of Beautiful Books, as saying.

When I was asked to read the Kamasutra I felt nervous and excited at
the thought of it,” Franks said.

“When we finally did it I was completely relaxed and we had a great
time. The only thing missing was the cigarette afterwards, she added.

[AI] Mumbai Marathon 2011

2010-07-29 Thread Arvind Bhartiya
Dear Friend,

Retina India solicits your support and participation for the
forthcoming Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2011 to be held on 16th
of January, 2011.

One of the key objectives of Retina India is to create awareness about
retinal disorders and the marathon will help us achieve it. Your
participation can also help in collecting funds for the various
projects of Retina India.

The marathon has 3 main events, the full marathon (42.2 kms), the half
marathon (21.1 kms) and the dream run (about 6 kms). You can
participate in any of them by registering for the same along with the
requisite fee.

What we plan to do:
1. To have at least 300 participants in the dream run running for the cause.
2. To have at least 100 supporters running the half marathon
3. To have at least 50 running the full marathon for Retina India
4. To have a sizeable participation of visually challenged for the
dream run. There will be volunteers to run with.
5. To have all participants sport the Retina India logo prominently
so as to get maximum visibility

What you have to do:
1. Register yourself, your family and friends to participate in an
event. (Details can be found on their website www.procamrunning.in or
you can call their Event helpline number – +91 22 42020200 (Mon to
Sat, 10 am to 5 pm). In case you reside out of Mumbai and cannot make
it for the run, get your well wishers in Mumbai to run and support the
cause.
2. Then inform us about the registration particulars
3. Inform your well-wishers that you are running for the cause and
they can send in donations, as much or as little as they want, to
support your cause and effort.
4. Run for your cause - run for Retina India.

Before the event we shall get in touch with all supporters and inform
them about the details like assembly point, volunteers, support etc.

Those wishing to volunteer to run with the visually challenged may be
required to attend a sensitization cum training session to enable them
to do so.

Efforts are being made to run the dream run as a group.

Registrations for the half and the full marathon have already begun
and usually get filled within a week of opening. So you need to act
now.

Registrations for the dream run will start on 1st of September 2010
and usually get full within the first few days.

For sending us your registration particulars or for any specific
information or suggestions, write at i...@retinaindia.org or to
Retina India, Ridhi Sidhi Bhavan, 2nd floor, 2/12 Babu Genu Road,
Mumbai 400 002. You can also check us on the web at
www.retinaindia.org.

You can also call Arvind Bhartiya on 022-2205 2308 or 98200 19584.

Retina India can achieve its objectives only if you step in for it. So
come, lets all run for the support of the cause and for ourselves.

With warm regards
Arvind Bhartiya

Dear Amar,
I have some policies with HDFC and Gics taken a few years back and i
am paying additional premium. Recently there was a case filed by a
disabled person petitioning that since the disabled are less mobile
and take extra care while moving out their chances of meeting with an
accident are infact lower and thus no extra premium should be charged.
I think that the lower court had decided in his favour but the matter
has been appealed in a higher gourt. I regret i don't have the case

 Dear All,

I often see that a single mail is composed, which has to be sent to
multiple persons. Best example can be greeting messages.
Now what I see is that though there are multiple addresses in the mail to
whom the mail will be sent, but when I open the message, I only see my
address. Same applies to other persons.
So to conclude, though there are many addresses in that single mail, but
one can only see his or her address in the 'to field'.
The object behind this is to respect everybody's privacy.
So any solution or any suggestion on how to protect everyone's privacy by
not disclosing others's email addresses, while sending mail to masses is
 welcomed.
In this case, two things are not possible for me.

 To send everyone individual mail.
 and
Last but not the least, not to send the mail itself to anyone! :)

 Amar Jain.

Yesterday's polling was an novel experience, atleast for me.
I was in front of the EVM and After going through the list of
candidates i just did not feel like casting my vote for any of them.
so I asked the officer on duty what is the option. He very politely
guided me to a register where i acknowledged that i have come to vote
but do not wish to cast my vote. and thats it.

This in effect means that we can actually vote for none .

 Friends
Yesterday, I had positive experience about accessible elections for VI.
The list of candidates along with their serial number, name, party name
and symbol in Braille was hung for VI to read.
All the buttons on the EVM were labeled, unlike last elections when only
half of the buttons contained the labels.
However, they insisted on filling up the form for escort which was done
in the past, but we succeeded in convincing them we were casting our vote

totally independently and so no need for such a form.
Finally, due to presence of journalist accompanying us, and good sense of

a few poll employees, they were convinced about non requirement of the
 form.
Accessibility is well covered in a few local dailies.

[AI] For the benefit of RP patients

2009-09-30 Thread Arvind Bhartiya
Here's why we should be on the RP Registry.

Information about the Indian Retinitis Pigmentosa Registry

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a term given to a group of hereditary
retinal diseases that are caused by a multiplicity of genetic defects
leading to a slowly progressive retinal damage. Night blindness,
progressive visual field defects, and visual impairment are common
symptoms of the disease. RP and allied diseases usually strike early
in life, leaving otherwise healthy individuals significantly vision
impaired or blind for life. The current worldwide prevalence of RP is
considered to be about 1:4000, while recent studies in India have
indicated that prevalence in India is possibly 10 times higher than in
the western world. There is presently no cure for this disease,
although progress in fields of stem cells, gene therapy, cell
transplant and artificial visual prosthetics including a retinal
implant appears promising. Some of these clinical trials are currently
on-going elsewhere in the world, and are likely to come to India soon.

Registry or a database is a collection of patient information, usually
kept at a central repository. This information can be either collected
from the patients themselves, or is requested from physicians, other
healthcare providers or hospitals/clinics/nursing homes, or any other
medical facility.

The web-based Indian RP Registry will help evaluate epidemiological
factors related to RP, thus highlighting and drawing attention to the
enormity of the problem in India as well as its social and economic
consequences. The data collection and analysis will help policy
planners and advocacy groups to set priorities and allocate resources
judiciously. The registry will also keep patients informed about
various treatments for RP, and allow patients a chance to interact
with other patients. With the information available, referring
physicians would be able to better manage their RP patients, while
maintaining continuity of the patient-physician relationship. This
patient database will allow access to authorized people, with highest
security measures in place to prevent unwelcome intrusion. Patient
confidentiality will be strictly respected.

The main objectives of the registry are:

Obtain current and future prevalence of RP at the national and
regional level in India
Conduct epidemiological clinical research studies
Dissemination of information about new treatment/s to patients, and
act as important resource for conduct of clinical trials
Disseminate information for planning early detection programs
Respond to national and local concerns about the disease
Provide information to citizens, legislators, and health professionals
To obtain a better correlation of the clinical course of RP to
specific genetic variations
Collect clinical data and the impact of RP on Quality of Life (QOL)
Better understanding of the relationship between clinical parameters
such as visual acuity and visual field loss impact on the person’s
daily activities
Policy planners require solid estimates of disease prevalence to
determine the likely benefit of these and future therapies

If you are a RP patient, or have a family member, or know someone who
does, please forward this information to that person.

Please ask the person/s to answer the questions that are given below
in an email, or at least to inform at the email retinain...@gmail.com,
so that we can either try to call you to get the information, or try
to send you a hard copy of the form for you to fill and send back.
Please do not forget to give us the contact phone number and the
address of the person.

Well, I believe turning play sounds in WebPages, does not prevent one from
launching, say, a radio show in one's media player and listen to it. It only
prevents automatic playing of sounds on a webpage.

I am open to Corrections if wrong.

I have no permanent solution right now though, turning off Play sounds in
Web Pages would not be a good option. What if you would want to listen
something online for instance, Eyeway Radio Show?

In fact, developer should provide an option for user to play / stop the
 audio on their site.

I think pressing escape silences the sound clip.
For permanent solution, go to internet options in control panel, then go to
advanced tab, in it go to multimedia options by arrowing, and then tab to
play sounds in WebPages and make it off by pressing the space bar.
I hope that should solve the problem.

Subject: [AI] language errors, please pay attention.

hello accessindians, greetings for the day.

i'm not sure if this can be considered as an off topic post, but since
i think its a forum about uplifting of differently able peoples, and
their better future, growth and development, i thought i'd bring this
 topic to attention.

before going further, please understand that i'm no linguistic expert,
and i'm not trying to offend anybody personelly, i'm here to learn
 and share whatever i observed.

i also understand that india, is a country of unity in diversity, and
various accessindians comes from a different background under
different circumstances and varied educational qualifications, which
indeed forms a group of people having different knowledge, skills, and
are expert in their own respective fields.

what i've observed and noticed is, lately, i've been reading mails
from accessindia with drastically distorted, and utterly
malfunctioning form of english, which not only makes reading
unpleasant, but also doesn't convey the message in its entirety.

this leads to total confusion and further time consuming,
not-so-useful threads of emails on a particular subject, all together
defeating the purpose of getting the actual problem solved.

so i'd humbly like to request 1 and all, to please be a little more
careful before firing an email to the list, and kindly use spell
checkers provided by default with most of the email clients, or if you
are more like a web mail user, please take time to write down your
message in microsoft word, and run spell checker to iron out the
errors, and then use copy paste features to put your message in the
 message body.

 alternatively, you can also visit,
 www.tinyspell.com
to correct your spellings on the fly, in real time as you type, as i do.

the program is fairly accessible and i've done its extensive review of
it few months ago, which, hopefully can be located in accessindia mail
 archive.

please understand that i'm not being a snob or trying to prove my self
a superior to anybody, i'm just trying to point out my observation.

please forgive me if anyone got offended, but i suppose, these small
spelling errors in CV's, and job applications plays a very big part.

so i'd request you all, to sit down, frame up and compose the message,
review and then send it to the list for the best results.

 with warm regards,

 ruchir.

[AI] virtual library - download 2.5 million e books - free

2009-07-04 Thread Arvind Bhartiya
hi!
one can now download about 2.3 million e books free.
The links to the collections will be worldebookfair.com

this article is from the economic times
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Internet-/In-virtual-fair-download-25-mn-books-for-free/articleshow/4736961.cms

the article is reproduced below.

NEW DELHI: You may be sitting with a laptop in your Noida apartment,
surfing the net in a New York library, or just browsing in a Cape Town
cybercafe - anyone anywhere can attend this book fair. Of course, you
can't run your finger over their spines or quickly scan the synopses
on their back covers - these books have neither.

But a few mouse clicks is all you need to access them. For a month
starting Saturday, over 2.5 million books will be available for free
download at a virtual book fair - the fourth eBook Fair sponsored by a
number of e-libraries including Project Gutenberg, The World Public
Library and Internet Archive. The links to the collections will be
worldebookfair.com.

According to Roberto Gorrieri of the World Public Library, the first
three 'fairs' averaged one million downloads per day and a sizable
section of the traffic was from India. ''My guess would be about 1/4
of all downloads were done from there. The most popular titles were
technology related titles,'' he told TOI in an email interview. No
surprise as technical books, especially the imported ones, cost a
bomb.

But it is not just the techies or casual readers who download. Even
humanities students have become intimately familiar with the world of
e-texts. Recently, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed
a plan to do away with text books altogether and push for the use of
ebooks in schools. For graduate students in India, there are more
texts - some of them notoriously difficult to find in stores - and
less time to procure them.

Sappho's poetry, prescribed in MA English course is one example;
Kesari Mohan Ganguly's translation of Karnaparva, is another.
Alberti's On Painting was found and circulated online. ''Etexts are
much easier to access and are far cleaner than photocopies,'' says
Sakshi Chopra who completed her MA in 2008. Later, for BEd, she used
etexts of John Dewey's Democracy and Education and Paulo Freire's
Pedagogy of the Oppressed. Nandita Dubey, a final year history
student, used etexts for her dissertation on Shahjahanabad.

I use a comb or a cigarette packet, but they are not suitable, or not decent

I am afraid, a signature is more risky than an LTI if you consider the

Yes I am disabled so it is difficult for me to vote- getting someone to

However if you dont go see what damage you will do: 1. The Bombay,

2.The Election Commission has constantly taken a stand that there are
not many disabled who vote so we have to prove the EC wrong. this helps
in making the facilities better for the next elections.
 3. You are part of the numbers that make up a class so if we are a big

 4. If you want to be part of Society and you want to be treated as a

  5. We are educated and the part of the educated middle class that

There may be several other reasons which I cant seem to remember this

 Hi friends

As there is a discussion on gmail's advanced features, I have some
basic doubts to be clarified now.
 1. How to delete a contact from the contacts list?
I remember once Srinivasu posting something in this regard saying it
has something to do with the basic html view. Is that it or did we
 manage a solution for that.
 2. In yahoo, we can know whether we have already readd a particular
mail or not. Is there such an option in gmail?
 3. Can we store phone numbers in gmail contacts as we do in yahoo?
 Awaiting guidance.

Raise your hand if you have an ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend that just

learn how to auto-delete their psychotic emails from your Gmail
 account.

Rather than a Block button like many email clients have, Gmail has a
powerful Filter feature which you can use for all sorts of purposes,
 but for today's
lesson we'll use a filter to automatically delete messages from a
 specific (and likely obnoxious) person.

 Filtering Emails in Gmail

If you are reading one of the emails from the extremely annoying
person you wish you had never met, you can click the Create a filter
link right next to the search boxes up near the top of the page…

If you chose Filter messages the From box will automatically be
populated with the person's email address, though you can write in
 their email
address, or even their name. I'd go with the email address, and then
 click the Next Step button.

On this screen, you can click the Mark as read checkbox, and then
click on the Delete it checkbox. This will send their messages
 automatically to the
 trash can.

Clicking the Create Filter button will make this filter active, and
you'll find it listed under Settings \ Filters in case you want to
 edit or delete
 it.

You'll notice that the message isn't permanently deleted, as it will
sit in the trash can for 30 days until it empties automatically.
 Somehow that seems
appropriate if you are open to any patch ups in future,,, maybe? :)

 regards,
 ruchir.

Re: [AI] personal views on dell vostro 1510 laptop

2009-01-08 Thread Arvind Bhartiya
dell has one more with xp. i recently got dell vostro 1600 with xp home loaded.

On 1/7/09, ruchir falodiya ruchir.falod...@gmail.com wrote:

i'd like to share this small story of buying a laptop with you all so
that, any1 of you who is going to buy a desktop or a laptop can keep

recently, my dad needed to buy a laptop ( because i've taken his intel
centrino for my use so he felt pretty lonely without his laptop )

i wished to go with him and shop my self, but my studies and exams
 wont let me do that.

first, despite he being in delhi, i sent him all the way to indore to
buy it, because the venders there are in close contact with me.
note: always check back with 4/5 venders before reaching to any conclusion.

this vender was a very good friend of mine, so i told him what my dad
or, i, in future needs from the new box i want to pick.

strangely, i've came to know, that the manufacturers, in hope to
promote windows vista, has disabled IDE( integrated digital
electronics ) port for accessing hard drive.

sadly, windows xp uses this port and vista uses something else ( which
 i cant recall now)

i've found this problam with hp, soni, compaq, and honestly, i'm
pretty sad to see this microsoft's monopoly to promote an operating
system, which is not as good as xp.

at last, i've found with his help, that dell vostro's 1 model still
 have its bios unmodified.

although being my friend, i double checked on internet about whatever
he is saying is true or not( always remember to double check venders
 words on internet!)

he was right, so we ended up buying a dell vostro 1510.

i extended the provided ram from 2 to 3 gb for better performance, and
after that, it costed me around rs. 43000

 the specifications are as follows.

 intel cor 2 duo
 2.0ghz
 250 sata hdd at 7000 rpm's
 combo DVD player

firewire port for connecting the laptop to other displays ( projectors
 for example)
 bluetuth 2.0
 lan, and wireless.

the display is somewhere around 15 inches and it ways around 2.78 kg's

i'm not sure about many of its exact specifications because dell have
 various flavers of vostro.

by the way, vostro is the corporate range of laptops from dell, which
 strictly aims at better performance.
it have black appearance and the external looks arn't that attractive
as far as i can tell.
but internal processing speed and other things seems pretty good

so if you are searching for a fast, good performing, stable laptop
under rs. 5, this could be of a look.

 with regards,

 ruchir.

 Hi,

The question of the hour is which model of Apple Ipod is your friend
 using?

 1. Rockbox supports a few models. You can check out the list on
 www.rockbox.org.
 2. Ipod Nano 4th Gen has the feature of enabling spoken menues, so it is
accessible with out using any software.
 3. Ipod Shuffle does not require any accessibility support as it does not
 have a screen.

 Hi all,

saved me a lot of running around with taxi drivers.

I have also been able to verify where they are going and to question
them regarding the route they are taking. It just gives you that much
more control. You can of course use the program while walking too.

You can also add favorites such as your house, your friend's house etc
and other places that are not on the map. The maps though are quite
comprehensive at least for Delhi and Gurgaon.

If you want to reduce your data usage, you can download the maps from
 http://access.mywayfinder.com.
 Note:
India is a separate region so do not click on asia when on this site.

The favorites are stored on the wayFinder server so, even if you
change your phone, you can synchronise them to the new phone by
choosing the relevant option from the favorites dialog. Also, in terms
of licensing, if you change your phone, you just enter your activation
code on the new phone and you are done. The licensing model is user
 based and not phone based.

THE ULTIMATE IN NAVIGATION TECHNOLOGY NOW IN INDIA

The GPs based navigation system for persons with blindness or low vision
 is
right here. Saksham Trust Introduces Way Finder Access software for mobile
phones in India. As per our mission, the software comes at a special cost
 for the country.

Key Features of Way Finder Access

.What is around you: Whether you are walking or travelling in Bus,
taxi or in a car, you will know what is it that you are crossing and what
 is
around you. Nearest places appear at top of the list. Whether it is a mall
or your favourite restaurant or a petrol pump or an office complex or the
crossings, you will now know all of it. You will also know in which
 direction you are moving.
.Where am I: A press of a key now can inform you the name of the
 street you are on.
.Door to Door Route guidance: You can now choose starting point and
destination and your mobile phone will give you detailed guidance about
 the
whole route. It will inform you how much to go straight and when to turn
 and
in which direction. Warning is given before the turning and instruction to
actually take the turn is given in loud Indian English clear voice When
 you
are at the turning. You can review the whole route before also.
.Automatic readjustment if you take a wrong turn: Even if you take a
wrong turn, the route is reworked and you are again given step by step
voice instructions to reach your destination.
.Create your own points of interest: You can mark your home or
friend's place or your office location and after that can easily choose it
as your start point or destination for creating the route for journey.
 Thus
you don't have to keep searching the addresses of places you visit often
 in
 the map.
.Full accessibility: All the above features are fully compatible and
accessible with your talks or Mobile Speak software. Thus, you can do all
 the above mentioned things independently.

So, Gone are the days when a Auto Driver could take you for a ride through
extra long route or to ask hundreds of people about where an address
 exactly
is and how to reach it.

What do you need for this revolutionary technology to reach your hands?
.A mobile phone which is capable of running talks software. In
technical language, any symbian 2nd or 3rd edition series 60 handset.
 .Talks software 3.1 or above
.A blue tooth GPS receiver or a handset with inbuilt GPS Receiver.
.GPRS Subscription from your service provider
 .Way finder access software

The Special Cost: The Way Finder Access Software is introduced in India in
9700 Indian Rupees. The same software sells at 399 Euros or 26000 Rupees
 in
 International market.

 How does it work?
The GPS Receiver gets exact place where you are from the satellite. This
information is fed to the Way Finder Access software. The WFA server has a
very detailed map of India. It is able to search your location on this map
and provide with information about what is around you.

If you want to store any mail in any label, check the check box of

 mode.
Now scroll down till you hear the name of the label created, for
instance Tiku Raj, then tab once and press enter. Now as you move to
that mail in the in box, you will see the name of the label preceding
the subject of the mail. And also you will see the label as a separate
folder containing the mails you have moved into that as a heading.
If you don't want labelled mails to appear in the in box, check the
check box of mails and press enter on archive. And if you want them to
appear back in the in box, go to links list and press enter on all
 mail.

Today, Apple released a new version of iTunes bringing it to version
 8. Apple also announced new iPod Nanos.

Briefly mentioned in the Steve Jobs keynote, is the ability for iTunes
to now be used using VoiceOver in Mac OS X and Window-Eyes in Windows
 XP or Windows
Vista. VoiceOver and Window-Eyes are screen reading software for blind
 and visually impaired users.

 From Apple:
 Block quote start
iTunes 8, which is screen-reader friendly for both the Mac and the PC,
provides compatibility with VoiceOver in Mac OS X Leopard and
 Window-Eyes 7.0 for
 Windows XP and Windows Vista.
 Block quote end

Not mentioned during the keynote is the accessibility features of the
 new generation of iPod Nano.

 From Apple:
 Block quote start
The new iPod nano (4th generation) — the world's most popular music
player — introduces spoken menus that let visually impaired music
 lovers browse and
select songs without viewing the screen. Instead, you'll hear a
synthesized voice speaking the names of menus, songs, and artists.

To take advantage of spoken menus, you will need:
 List of 4 items
 • iPod nano (4th generation)
 • iTunes 8
 • Mac OS X v10.4.11 or later
 • Windows Vista or Windows XP Home or Professional (Service Pack 3 or later)
 list end
 Block quote end
Not only is this great news for blind consumers but this is great news
for consumers who have a hard time reading small text. Blind and
 visually impaired
music fans have been largely ignored when it comes to accessible music
 players. Kudos Apple!

you never fail to impress with your insights.

in step 4, you mention to copy to root of disk.
how is this to be done. Please enlighten.

On 8/25/08, ruchir falodiya [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 hello all at accessindia.

sometimes, we want to automaticly run a software, or load some program
from a CD without doing anything or going anywhere.
the good example could be, running the jaws setup providing speech, or
 loading portable version of NVDA.
in normal cases, if we normally write files to a disk, we need to
take sited help on a different computer, for navigating folders of CD
 and running the exact file.
however, the actual difference between a normally written disk and an
autorun cd, is just 1 file with 2 lines of instruction.

the file, which makes this difference, is called autorun.inf
if the basic settings for how windows handle disk haven't be changed,
as soon as you insert the disk, your operating system ( windows )
checks for this autorun.inf file and executes the instructions with
 in.
this, file can be created useing simple note pad file, and needs to be
saved with the name of autorun.inf
note: the name should be autorun.inf,
 not autorun.inf.txt
also, this file should be saved on the root of the drive, and not
 under any sub folders.
the syntax of autorun can cover a lot of topics, such as creating icon
of the disk, creating different submenus for different tasks, etc
i, however, in this article is just covering a single aspect of
autorun, and that is to automatically open/run a file.

this, i can explain taking an example of some program/file to
 demonstrate the actual syntax.

suppose i have NVDA's portable version, named nvda_portable
the executable file to load NVDA, is called NVDA.exe located inside
 the nvda_portable folder.
note: please configure any file/software/settings before writing to
the disk. after this, no actual changes can be done.

 steps:
 1. open note pad
 2. write these lines to the file
 [autorun]
 shellexecute=nvda_portable\nvda.exe
 3. save this file with the name of autorun.inf
 4. copy this file to the root of the disk.
 5. copy the nvda_portable folder
 6. write all these files to disk.

next time, as soon as you insert this disk into any computer having
sound card, the NVDA will automatically load, and will start giving u
the speech output like a screen reader.

same format can be used for creating autorun of any other file, for
example, the setup of jaws, powerpoint presentations, mp3 files, and
 many more.
also, do not put the default drive letter in autorun file such as
 shellexecute=e:\jaws_setup.exe, because, different computers have
different drive letters assigned to a CD
 you should right,
 shellexecute=jaws_setup.exe
 or,
 shellexecute=softwares\speech\jaws\jaws_setup.exe
the location specifyed inside autorun.inf file should be exact
location of that file on the disk.
also, due to security reasons, autorun may not properly work on all
USB drives.( however, they will surely work in all cd's)

hopefully, this information could be useful for some of you.
all your suggestions, feedbacks and views are welcome.

U.S. Says Many Apartments Violate Law on Disabled
 By
 CHARLES V. BAGLI

Facing potential lawsuits by the federal government, developers and
landlords in New York City may need to spend tens of millions of dollars to
 renovate
more than 100,000 apartments built since 1991 to comply with federal housing
laws barring discrimination against tenants who use wheelchairs, real estate
 industry officials say.

For 20 years, residential developers have complied with a city law requiring
them to ensure that all the apartments they build are accessible to disabled
tenants. Considered path-breaking legislation when it was enacted in 1988,
the city law essentially meets the federal requirements of the Fair Housing
Act, developers and city officials say.

But the United States attorney's office in Manhattan has sent letters to
about a dozen of the city's most prominent landlords and their architects
 saying
that some of their buildings were not accessible to persons with
disabilities, which would constitute discrimination under the Fair Housing
 Act. The
 recipients included Related Companies, the
 Durst Organization
, Rose Associates, Rockrose Development and Silverstein Properties.

The letters said that doors were not wide enough, and that kitchens and
bathrooms were not big enough to allow someone in a wheelchair to maneuver.
 Also,
the letters said, tenants could not install grab bars to lift themselves
in or out of a tub, because the walls had not been reinforced.

The federal prosecutor's office, which began sending the letters in January,
has asked owners for meetings, building inspections and all the records of
the design and layout of the apartments in specific buildings. Until
recently, the real estate industry had hoped that the matter would quietly
 go away.

But last week, the United States attorney's office filed a lawsuit against
one of the recipients, AvalonBay Communities, and its architects, charging
 them
with discrimination against disabled people by failing to provide sufficient
access at Avalon Chrystie Place, a building on the Lower East Side with 361
 apartments.

Now other landlords and developers - virtually everyone who has built an
apartment house in New York City since 1991 - fear they may be next. Along
 with
city officials, they assert that compliance with what is known as Local Law
58 satisfies the standards set by the Fair Housing Act.

This is not limited to these 12 or 13 buildings, said Steven Spinola,
 president of the
Real Estate Board of New York
, the industry's powerful lobbying arm. If there's a decision that Local
Law 58 does not meet the criteria for apartments' being accessible, you
 could
easily argue that every building built since 1991 wasn't built in accordance
 with the federal guidelines.

Mr. Spinola estimates that 100,000 rental apartments have been built since
1991, as well as thousands of condominiums. The cost of renovating bathrooms
and kitchens, one developer said, would be astronomical. Another said that
his company was already redesigning apartments for future buildings in ways
that would eliminate foyer closets to provide more room for entryways.

City officials, who had scheduled a meeting with federal prosecutors for the
day after the suit was filed against AvalonBay, promptly canceled it,
 furious
that they had not been notified.

In light of the U.S. attorney's lawsuit, we postponed our meeting so we
could assess the matter, Martha Mann Alfaro, a deputy chief in the city's
 Law
Department, said in a statement. However, we anticipate having productive
 discussions with the U.S. attorney.

Rebekah Carmichael, a spokeswoman for the United States attorney, Michael J.
Garcia, declined to comment, saying the office did not confirm or deny the

Edward M. Schulman, general counsel for AvalonBay, said the company's
housing was fully accessible to persons with disabilities.

Our buildings have been constructed in compliance with New York City's
Local Law 58, he said. We are at a loss to understand why the federal
 government
is suddenly viewing New York City's Local Law 58 as deficient and
 unsatisfactory.

This year, the landlords and architects enlisted the Bloomberg
administration to help push back the federal prosecutors. And the Real
 Estate Board hired
a former federal prosecutor, Sarah L. Shudofsky, to represent them.

[AI] right to informationn goes online

2008-08-04 Thread Arvind Bhartiya
Hello! friends,
our right to information has gone online and can be of immense use to
us. read on for details

: Filing queries under the Right to Information (RTI) Act has become a
matter of minutes with the Central Information Commission (CIC)
launching
an online system for submission of appeals.

The new system was started last week. Now all Internet and tech savvy
RTI users can file their complaints and appeals online,.

The RTI Act was passed by parliament in 2005 for promoting
transparency and accountability in the functioning of government
departments.

Every department has a public information officer (PIO) to whom RTI
applications can be submitted. However, if the user does not get the
information or
receives incomplete information, he can file first an appeal with the
appellate authority within the same department.

In case the applicant still remains unsatisfied, he can file a second
appeal to their respective information commission.

Now, the applicants will just have to log on to the website of CIC
(www.cic.gov.in) and click on the 'RTI complaints and appeal' link,
which will provide
them with an application form.

Filling of the form is very easy. The user has to just fill mandatory
fields like name, address, citizenship status, ministry, department or
public authority
that the appeal is against and whether the complainant is below the
poverty line,.

The applicants can even upload documents related to their complaint.

i don't know how accessible this site would be, since i have not visited it.
all the best.
