Re: [AFMUG] System Release 13.3 available

2015-01-16 Thread Mathieu
Hello,

I tried v13.3 successfully on two PMP450 AP.

but on a PMP430AP and a PMP400AP, I lost ethernet link in both case
after the upgrade.
these are remote sites, so I'll have to drive there to see what happens.

I tried on a third AP (400) at my office. Even the lights on the AP are
off after the reboot. It seems totally bricked.

Should I open a ticket with the support to get new units ?

Licensed vendors can’t use many of the tricks unlicensed, or low frequency,
vendors get to use.

Well right, we need more bandwidth per link, but also that in many areas
there's no links to be had, so we have to make do with what we have.

For instance in that spot I'm working on the GigE links for, there's no 6 GHz,
11 GHz and only 2x horizontal 18 GHz licenses available. It's not exactly
suburbia or HFT alley, either.

I think the next step will have to be IP20 type solutions from more vendors.

Patrick is talking all kinds of engineering finesse that lowers how much signal
LTE needs to work well by like 10 - 15 dB. I wonder how much of that would help
licensed links. The thought there is that having more signal to work with means
that higher QAMs aren't as fragile as without that fanciness.

Roadmap to 10G via licensed, anyone?

All good points, not sure they address Erich’s issue of needing more bandwidth
per link without multiple antennas per link on the tower. I think he’s saying
an IP20 class radio is too expensive, and over the next few years lots of us
are going to need that kind of radio.

10 GHz unlicensed would help. I sometimes think the license protections are a
bit excessive.

Maybe loosen the geographic restrictions on 7 GHz and 13 GHz?

Maybe some effort into getting 4 GHz and other legacy PtP bands opened back up?
They don't have a ton of room and don't allow for huge channels, but some is
better than none and maybe since the HFT guys care more about lower latency and
less about throughput, they''ll build longer hops and leave our 11 and 6 gig
alone? ;-)

You could drive around to all of the HFT sites and look for links that are no
longer there, but still licensed. Document. Come back 30 days later and
document again, submit to the FCC (or wherever Liz says is best) and have those
licenses revoked. ;-)

But yeah, I do like Ceragon's 4x4 setup. Two radio heads, four transmitters,
two licenses, tons of bandwidth.

The conversation goes deeper. In several areas we are out of spectrum, it may
be due to HFT or just plain out. So most WISPs if they have deployed Licensed,
they have to deal with what spectrum they have.

Re: [AFMUG] best sync settings for 5ghz fsk, 450 ptp and 450pmp

2015-01-16 Thread Ken Hohhof
I don’t know if it’s best, but where we have FSK colocated with 450, we have
these settings:

FSK: 75%, 10 miles, 2 slots
450: 83%, 10 miles, 2 slots

Once the FSK is all gone, we would probably change the 450 to our usual setting
of 75% and 8 slots. For simplicity, we didn’t want to change the FSK settings.
If we expected the FSK to be there forever, we would probably have used
different numbers.

But it’s really just a matter of playing with the frame calculator.

Can we setup an AF2015 list just for the show? I don't know how easy or

mostly show related traffic on it.

Samsung makes commercial cell extenders (AKA femtocells) that will

Haven't seen anything that will handle LTE yet, but they've been

[AFMUG] epmp 1000 2.4 antenna options.

2015-01-16 Thread brandon
We just recently got our first batch of this equipment and are going to
start to deploy it next week. Since the force 100 seems to only be in 5ghz I
am curious what others are using on connectorized units that need a bit more
than the integrated units can do. It's always better to have actual real
world experience on what to order to cut out some of the trial and error and
piles of stuff on the shelf. The vendors all have great idea's on what I
should use but I tend to take that with a grain of salt.

Thanks guys.

Brandon

The big rat came when I was working on my brother-in-law's farm when I
was a teenager. A mother rat had somehow taken up residence in a corn
silo. She made a whole family/nest inside that giant silo.

We were pulling out corn to feed the cattle, when her whole nest came
out the hopper. She was bigger than a cat! Yow! She was running
around trying to figure out where to go, and all I could think of was
how to hit her with the shovel! Geeze was she big.

SAF Integra S will move 474 uncompressed, up to gig with header compression.
SAF is coming out with a WS that will have a louder radio, though loses the
compression.

Alcoma moved 660 megabit, but without header compression, though I believe has
a louder radio.

SIAE is still 56 MHz, but has a louder radio than the Integra S.

Trango Lynx is around the above guys in price and per formance.

Important things to consider: maximum uncompressed speed on a link, 99.999%
uptime uncompressed speed, price. Something that's balls fast most of the time
may not be fast enough for you during weather.

Re: [AFMUG] 6 or 11ghz best option for higher capacity ?

2015-01-16 Thread Ken Hohhof
I would first talk to your frequency coordinator about what FCC channel widths
can be licensed in what bands. I’m not sure 40 MHz channels exist in 6 GHz,
and I believe you’ll find an 80 MHz channel width means you need to license 2
adjacent channels. There is no benefit to having a radio that does 80 MHz
channels if that’s not what you license, other than maybe having consistent
equipment across your network to simplify sparing.

removes the feature.

But seriously I would permit whatever the tech finds to be easier to
align. If they're better with numbers, let them. I personally can't stand
the alignment tone since I can't really hear what's better or worse.

I would first talk to your frequency coordinator about what FCC channel widths
can be licensed in what bands. I’m not sure 40 MHz channels exist in 6 GHz,
and I believe you’ll find an 80 MHz channel width means you need to license 2

In 6 GHz, is 60 really 60, or is it 30+30 contiguous?

I’m thinking it might be easier to do XPIC on the same 30 MHz channel than to
find 60 MHz of available spectrum, but I haven’t done anything in 6 GHz, mainly
because of antenna size. Yes the FCC did relax the antenna rules to allow down
to a 3 ft dish, but realistically that won’t give you enough gain unless it’s a
short link, especially given that 6 GHz is subject to multipath fades. So
bottom line I haven’t kept up with what you can do in 6 GHz, so I could easily
be wrong or behind the times.

A lot of people are tone deaf, but I think it's more rare than color

The tone alignment has always worked very well for me.

I happen to be color blind, but it has not been a major problem for me.
I still see colors, but I think the intensity (or something) is
different. I usually do not have trouble separating the colors in cat5

Does such a thing even exist?

Apparently this must be a bit like being color blind. The tone is
really easy for me to use, far easier than looking at the numbers.
Yet I have been at sites with certain installers that claim they can't
hear any difference as they move the antenna around. I'm just standing
there scratching my head as they go right past the sweet spot.

Now if we are talking about 2.4 Canopy FSK, the tones are pretty
useless. 3.65 and 5Ghz

Re: [AFMUG] System Release 13.3 available

2015-01-16 Thread Ken Hohhof
I hear people say they can’t do tone alignment all the time and I don’t believe
it. Supposedly only 4% of people are tone deaf. Hey, I cannot sing the same
note as the person next to me, but I have no trouble doing tone alignment.

When I get such people to use an amplified speaker, I find they suddenly like
tone alignment.

Also I consistently find bad installs done “by the numbers” that would have
been known at the time if the installer used tone alignment. We have lots of
problems with multipath here in flat corn belt country, and you can tell right
off from the varying, warbling, or mushy tone that something is not right.
Sometimes you can also hear that you are aligning on a sidelobe. We also have
a ton of wind turbines, which affect the signal in unpredictable ways even if
the blades are not directly in the path, especially if there are multiple
turbines along the path. You can hear the tone varying in time with the blades
spinning. If you are aligning by the numbers, all this will be averaged out.

Also since you have constant feedback from the tone, but someone reading you
numbers is only going to give you feedback every few seconds, you can do a more
exact alignment with tones. With numbers, in reality you are more likely to
just be close to the peak not dead on it.

You should certainly do linktests and check the SNR before declaring it a
successful install, but I really believe installers should be instructed to use
tone alignment when it is available.

Just like I get climbers who pooh-pooh using a voltmeter to align licensed
links, and just want the numbers called out to them. Unless you have dB
readout right on the radio, voltmeter on the BNC is the best way, instant
feedback, very precise. I especially like how Exalt makes the voltage
basically a dB value so you can also tell if you are getting what was
calculated.

Well you definitely don't want to give them a firmware update that removes
the feature.

But seriously I would permit whatever the tech finds to be easier to align. If
they're better with numbers, let them. I personally can't stand the alignment
tone since I can't really hear what's better or worse.

I’m thinking it might be easier to do XPIC on the same 30 MHz channel than
to find 60 MHz of available spectrum, but I haven’t done anything in 6 GHz,
mainly because of antenna size. Yes the FCC did relax the antenna rules to
allow down to a 3 ft dish, but realistically that won’t give you enough
gain unless it’s a short link, especially given that 6 GHz is subject to
multipath fades. So bottom line I haven’t kept up with what you can do in
6 GHz, so I could easily be wrong or behind the times.

compression yields a lot at 64byte packet, but yields much less at 256byte and
larger...it's a curve.

Also if your upgrading a long 5GHz link with 6Ghz, you'll probably be slightly
better off even if the calcs say 'low uptime'. 11GHz will 'swing' during rains
more than 6GHz obviously so the higher gain from the same size dishes helps
there. Licensing a wide single polarity is always cheapest...

though on the old fiberglass dishes by now and have not seen that problem.

I have seen what you describe I think when I had FW 13.1.2 on the AP and
13.2 on the SM. It would resolve upon running a linktest but then come
back. Went away by making sure everything was on 13.2. Might have been a
fluke though, FW upgrade involves a reboot, never know if that was what did
it.

We are converting one of our oldest sites to 450.

Does anyone know if the older dishes have problems with the 450 SMs?

Some of these dishes are 10 years old. I wouldn't think so, but you never
know until you ask.

The big rat came when I was working on my brother-in-law's farm when I was a
teenager. A mother rat had somehow taken up residence in a corn silo. She
made a whole family/nest inside that giant silo.

We were pulling out corn to feed the cattle, when her whole nest came out the
hopper. She was bigger than a cat! Yow! She was running around trying to
figure out where to go, and all I could think of was how to hit her with the
shovel! Geeze was she big.

Re: [AFMUG] 6 or 11ghz best option for higher capacity ?

What is my least expensive option for getting more bandwidth in 6ghz or
11ghz ? Right now I have 366mbps (56mhz 256qam) would like double or better?

during rains more than 6GHz obviously so the higher gain from the same size
dishes helps there. Licensing a wide single polarity is always cheapest...

As far as XPIC on 30 MHz vs. 60 MHz it all depends on the environment.
If x-pol is needed to clear a channel, it isn’t going to be available on
 the orthogonal polarization.

I’m thinking it might be easier to do XPIC on the same 30 MHz channel
than to find 60 MHz of available spectrum, but I haven’t done anything in 6
GHz, mainly because of antenna size. Yes the FCC did relax the antenna
rules to allow down to a 3 ft dish, but realistically that won’t give you
enough gain unless it’s a short link, especially given that 6 GHz is
subject to multipath fades. So bottom line I haven’t kept up with what you
can do in 6 GHz, so I could easily be wrong or behind the times.

I would first talk to your frequency coordinator about what FCC channel
widths can be licensed in what bands. I’m not sure 40 MHz channels exist
in 6 GHz, and I believe you’ll find an 80 MHz channel width means you need
to license 2 adjacent channels. There is no benefit to having a radio that
does 80 MHz channels if that’s not what you license, other than maybe
having consistent equipment across your network to simplify sparing.

Are you buying everything new? Ask SAF what bands work with your proposed
link. Consider dish size.

Now with possible bands, see what are available from a frequency

What is my least expensive option for getting more bandwidth in 6ghz or

Also if your upgrading a long 5GHz link with 6Ghz, you'll probably be
slightly better off even if the calcs say 'low uptime'. 11GHz will 'swing'
during rains more than 6GHz obviously so the higher gain from the same size
dishes helps there. Licensing a wide single polarity is always cheapest...

It's really 60. Ours does 1.4Gbps, 700Mbps full duplex (if every packet

As far as XPIC on 30 MHz vs. 60 MHz it all depends on the environment.
If x-pol is needed to clear a channel, it isn’t going to be available on
 the orthogonal polarization.

In 6 GHz, is 60 really 60, or is it 30+30 contiguous?

I’m thinking it might be easier to do XPIC on the same 30 MHz channel
than to find 60 MHz of available spectrum, but I haven’t done anything in
6 GHz, mainly because of antenna size. Yes the FCC did relax the antenna
rules to allow down to a 3 ft dish, but realistically that won’t give you
enough gain unless it’s a short link, especially given that 6 GHz is
subject to multipath fades. So bottom line I haven’t kept up with what
you can do in 6 GHz, so I could easily be wrong or behind the times.

30 MHz in the 7 GHz band, 30 MHz in some 6 GHz, 60 MHz in the rest of 6
 GHz... IIRC.

I would first talk to your frequency coordinator about what FCC channel
widths can be licensed in what bands. I’m not sure 40 MHz channels exist
in 6 GHz, and I believe you’ll find an 80 MHz channel width means you
need to license 2 adjacent channels. There is no benefit to having a
radio that does 80 MHz channels if that’s not what you license, other
than maybe having consistent equipment across your network to simplify
 sparing.

11ghz integra doesn't exist, and when it does in april it's just 60mhz!
Should I even be considering a 60mhz radio? Seems like 80 is the way to
 go?

I guess what I'm interested in is what is the cheapest 6 or 11ghz 80mhz
radio in terms of bits/hz or should I just use the lumina in 2+0?

So I have a lumina on 11ghz 56mhz that I need to upgrade, what is the
most economical option for more capacity ? Saf doesn't really have much
besides 2+0 right now (maybe that's my best option?) So I was thinking
about trying another brand something with maybe 80mhz channels ? What are
my options that won't cost an arm and a leg ?
