Not sure if I ever posted the update for my FedEx claim on the KW-1 mod iron, but they did finally pay up. Well, $473 and change, the price I provided from Dahl's most recent (2004) online catalog plus shipping apparently. They managed to break one of the cast iron frames from severe mishandling, over the short 200-300 mile distance between Maine and Vermont. On an package of approximately 35-40 lbs! Seems the only holdup was getting some kind of 'statement of value' for the item, before they would pay out what was insured for (or at least, close to it). Lessons learned: proper, appropriate, extra packaging is not enough. Over-over packing can't hurt, but no guarantees. When it's your turn, it's your turn. They have claims adjusters who (in my opinion) want to see just how determined you are to press your claim. If 50% of the people get discouraged, that saves them a lot of $. Be persistent, get your ducks in a row, keep good records of all contacts. Lastly, be aware that when you provide a value with documentation, this is likely what they will go by. If your figure is less than the insured amount, tough luck. I could only find one source, fortunately it was close to the insured value. Hauled the transformer along on a recent trip to pick up a transmitter in north central Maine, stopped by WZ1M's place with it. Hypot testing showed the windings are still good, no shorts or other internal damage. We seem very inclined to participate in activity on 75M in the new expansion, but has there been any increase in activity in the expanded portion of 40M? Mike, my experience with 40 has been a lot different due to the more 'propogationally-volatile' nature of the band. Someone mentioned over the long weekend that 40 had started to settle down some, so perhaps we'll see better opportunities there soon. I know there has been some AM activity down much lower on that band. Folks need to get used to the idea of finding an open frequency and using it. Simple as that. If half the people who say I tuned down below but didn't hear anyone actually put out a call, think of the activity there'd be. Waiting for someone else to do it for you won't provide good results. There are maybe 2 dozen folks down between 3705-3725 regularly, not counting the Canadians. A few more if you add the guys who use 3685. I hear Brian, Kent, and the old dawg down there when the band is quiet enough, so I know there's regular activity in other parts of the country too. Old habits just die harder for some folks. The 160 ant is on the 'to do' list, that should help my signal. Was using the 80m low dipole into a T with a large broadcast dummy load into the other side. It works, but that's about it. Re: [AMRadio] IARU - VP ARRL contact by WD5BZO
The B/C committee of Region 2 was chartered with developing the revised Region 2 band plan based on the structure and fill of the existing Region 1 band plan with regional and frequency differences taken into account. Since the voluntary Region 1 band plan has been in existence since January 2006, what rules are the amateurs in these countries covered by Region 1 following. We know that a number of U. S. amateurs have worked European stations on 75 over the last several months. Are the European amateurs actually limiting their AM bandwidth to 2700 Hz. Pete, wa2cwa No. But the Region 1 band plan carries the following preferred mode and usage note: All modes - CW, SSB and those modes listed as Centres of Activity, plus AM (Consideration should be given to adjacent channel users). This appears to grant an exception to the 2700Hz bandwidth provision, since that is too narrow for DSB AM to operate, and the statement regarding consideration of adjacent channel users implies that AM signals would be expected to occupy more than the standard 2700 Hz bandwidth. Not that it's desirable for AM to be reduced to a footnote that grants non-compliance in the form of a special case exception, but the Region 2 plan doesn't even contain that. Instead, AM is relegated to 40m plus a few narrow windows in 75m, 20m and 10m, but no AM operation at all is recommended on 160m, 15m, 17m or 12m. I had an R390a shipped by UPS. They managed to bend the front panel. It worked but a crystal filter was bad also. They really had to drop it from a height. I put in a claim and the adjuster showed up and took pictures and left. I got a letter a couple of days later stating that the claim was denied. I called the guy who sold it to me who told me he just dropped the R390a at a UPS store for packing and shipping. They originally denied the claim as item improperly packed They eventually coughed up about $450.00 when they were given the proof that their UPS store had packed it. On the topic of the HRO-50 - Is anyone familiar with a product detector mod that plugs into the NBFM socket and uses a single 6J6? This one gets around the usual problem of having no way to turn on the BFO when in the NBFM position. The stock AM detector is disabled and BFO runs all the time, with the plug-in providing both AM and CW detection. It's pretty clever, just wonder who deserves the credit. 73, Bob W9RAN __ Our Main Website: http://www.amfone.net AMRadio mailing list List Rules (must read!): http://w5ami.net/amradiofaq.html List Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/amradio Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html Post: mailto:AMRadio@mailman.qth.net To unsubscribe, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word unsubscribe in the message body.

What a pain in the scrote. The manual says to adjust the coils for the low end of the band, (in this case, I'm using coil set D 1.8-4.0M GC 3,5-4.0 BS) and there aren't any adj. available. I looked in the in each coil set and I can see the coil but it looks as though it was designed not to be adj. and I'm hesitant about attempting to adj. them. The only one that has an adjustment for GC is D-4. It worked well on 160 but it was damn near deaf on 75M. I wanted to make it back to standard but its a real tough go. I should have left well enough alone. Well, in for a penny, in for a pound. Re: [AMRadio] Spark gap transmitter
A DC buzzer. When power is applied, it will make and break rapidly, transmitting a continuous noise when the switch is on, or when the key is down. I once connected a morse code practice key with such a buzzer, and a 1.5V D cell battery, to an antenna, and it was audible on the AM broadcast band for several hundred feet. Mike, My book indicates, like many National receivers, on D band a single loop of wire inside of the coil is bent to add/subtract inductance. Re: [AMRadio] To ship or not to ship
The only way to get any satisfaction out of UPS is to file a claim against them in small claims court. With the proper photos and testimony via a notarized letter from the seller that the item was 100% when it was shipped, you will win a judgement nearly every time. Many times, UPS will pay upon receipt of the notice from the court that they are being sued. It is not worth their time to try to defend a suit for a few hundred dollars. Their whole idea is to make trying to collect from them so much trouble that the average individual will eventually just eat his loss and go away. A letter from the court gets their attention. Re: [AMRadio] HRO-50
Finally, some one actually read the manual! The alignment is actually quite simple once youve been thru it once. The way we determined which way to move that wire was to insert a plastic rod with a piece of aluminum glued on one end and powdered iron on the other. Re: [AMRadio] To ship or not to ship
Whenever I ship something really valuable via UPS, I take pictures of the item, both before and after packing, and I mail them to myself as postcards. It's cheap insurance. You must also take care to use a new, properly taped box and adequate impact-absorbing material: UPS and other carriers love to wriggle out of paying based on old box or inadequate packing claims. Sorry to say that Small Claims isn't the first avenue I'd take on a claim: in Massachusetts, it costs about $75 *just to file a claim*, so that eliminates most small items right at the start. For larger items, consider insuring with a separate agency and professional crating. FWIW. YMMV. 73, Bill W1AC [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The only way to get any satisfaction out of UPS is to file a claim against them in small claims court. [AMRadio] 572B's going Legacy?

[AMRadio] Just a thought for laughter and memory
I would think that most of us ain't no more spring chicken (rosters) anymore, so I though I would ask this in light of some of the serious exchanges that I've read/deleted over the AM band plan ala IRAU/ARRL recently. Question: What was your favorite April QST April Fool's article, or one that could have qualified? I remember from years past The Vertical Beer Can Special and also the ham who wrote the article on the compact antenna mounted atop the roof of his high rise New York apartment building with the radiating element being a red light bulb with comments on all those he contacted on the bands using the antenna aks dummy load. Of personal note, I remember years ago when we were having a big family/friend cookout in my backyard with all the young family/children energies going on, I tried to assemble a beer can vertical or at least get all the element parts collected. You can imagine the rest of the story with all the other young non-ham fathers attempting to assist me in advice and physical efforts. Did we succeed ? Well I'll say this. We did get the antenna high enough to resonate on 6 meters then we just kind of lost interest in the vertical extension element assembly for some reason as each can was becoming more difficult to 'solder' to the next, :-) then all of us going back to play with the kids and eat more hamburgers and watermelon even though we had plenty of aluminum raw materials left over to probably make a 160 meter vertical. Remember those times? Have happy thoughts this coming month with you families as they are (the years) each numbered. Question: What was your favorite April QST April Fool's article, or one that could have qualified? I think my all time favorite (and the one that destroyed the most equipment) was the one about the dummy load made of RG8/U coax. It was a section about a foot long with PL-259s on each end. On the far end was a Tee connector, with a 12 loop of coax between the open ends of the Tee. The LETTERS column was hilarious the next few issues... like the guy who actually made one (he was far from alone!), and hooked it to his shiny new Hallicrafters SR-2000 Hurricane and put his final amp tubes into orbit around the moon!!! Second prize went to the Electron Accelerator antenna. The graphics showed a dipole, with electrons wandering around randomly in a lotta space inside of the wire near the center of the antenna. Maybe an eighth wavelength down the antenna, the wire size was suddenly REDUCED, forcing the electrons into nice, orderly, tightly packed streams! Honorable mention goes to the guy who published the NASA Cycles to Hertz Conversion Nomograph!!! [AMRadio] ARRL Great Lakes Director on IARU Bandplan
Here are some comments from the Great Lakes Division Director, Jim Weaver K8JE, regarding the IARU band plan proposal. - - - - - - - - - +++ AM Privileges -- Under Attack? +++ Definitely not! A few members contacted me with questions about the possible impact on US hams of a bandplan adopted by Region 2 of the International Amateur Radio Union -- IARU. The answer to the question is that the Region 2 bandplan has no impact on US hams. For background, the IARU is the International organization of national Amateur Radio societies from around the world. These societies include the Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC), the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) and the ARRL. Region 2 of the IARU covers the Western hemisphere. IARU cannot issue legally-binding rules or regulations. There are three regions in the IARU. Each of the regions has a voluntary bandplan. The Region 1 and Region 3 bandplans preceded the Region 2 plan. IARU Region 2 held a conference a few weeks ago. Among other actions, it adopted its new recommended bandplan during this conference. It is critical to understand that this recommended bandplan has absolutely no relevance to countries such as Canada and the US which have federal agencies (e.g. the FCC) that define and regulate Amateur Radio bands. In addition, IARU bandplans are merely recommendations to amateurs in countries that do not have such government agencies. There is no force of law behind the voluntary bandplans. The concern of some amateurs seems to be that the FCC will adopt the Region 2 bandplan; thereby reducing the US's frequency allocation for AM. One writer from the GLD said the FCC has previously adopted a number of practices recommended by the IARU. To this moment, he has not responded to my request to identify just which IARU recommended actions were picked up and adopted by the Commission. Similarly, a writer from outside the GLD has accused IARU President Larry Price, W4RA of a written attempt to manipulate International Treaty to reduce AM privileges. To date, he too, has not responded to my request for a reference to the source of his accusation. Finally, CQ Magazine has jumped into the fray by accusing ARRL of using the recent IARU Conference to further regulation by bandwidth. I enjoy reading CQ; however, as much as I enjoy reading it I equally strongly assure you that its editor has gotten caught-up in bad journalism. The basis for the editorial appears merely to be ARRL's publicly-acknowledged support of regulation by bandwidth and the fact that the Region 2 bandplan specified bandwidths. This logic is similar to claiming 1 plus 1 = 6. The fact is that ARRL did not participate in developing this bandplan. We had no representation on the bandplan committee. Could it be that in reality, the plan was developed in its present form because the delegates who drafted it believe this is the way it should be and that there was no dastardly conspiracy after all? Or is it too hard to believe in this day of ever-present conspiracy theories is it too much to expect that some things are done in a fully responsible manner? The bottom line to this small flurry of concern by some AM colleagues is that the Region 2 bandplan represents nothing to worry about. The IARU has no impact on US FCC regulations . . . the FCC has no apparent intent to act against AM in the foreseeable future . . . the ARRL has no thought of recommending the FCC take action against AM . . . and I will vote against any effort to get ARRL to recommend action against AM. My recommendation to AM operators is to relax and enjoy your favorite form of Amateur Radio . . . for a long time. - - - - - - - - - Email and AIM finally together. Re: [AMRadio] Subscribe to the ARRL ?
I keep wondering if any of these individuals who keep criticizing the ARRL actually are members. Haven't you been reading my messages at all? That's one of my main points in all this bruhaha: As a long-time member I expected I would have at least a small voice in the development of any bandplan changes. But I clearly do not... My respectful and gently-expressed messages to my Director and League officers regarding the IARU Region 2 bandplan have been ignored, insulted, attacked, scorned, belittled, and pooh-poohed. Re: [AMRadio] IARU - VP ARRL contact by WD5BZO
But this entire thread (or really the entire mentality) of somebody's going to steal my little red shovel and it's MINE is quite over the top. I encourage you to read my past postings on this matter. I have consistently made the point that a restrictive and limiting bandplan that does not match current practices on the bands - like the one that will go into effect in a month or so - is simply not a good idea. Not because it impacts any of my little-red-shovels, AM, or otherwise, but rather because it is not well-conceived and will likely lead to stress between amateurs that is is simply not necessary. Besides, the problem it seeks to solve doesn't even exist except in the minds of a few folks who want to CONTROL things. Without meaningful definitions in the plan of bandwidth and how to measure it, there will be endless finger-pointing among SSB and digital operators that can never be sorted out. Without room in the plan for full-carrier DSB AM there will be hams who claim that AM operations are not following the bandplan. And since good amateur practice in the FCC rules is becoming linked to following a bandplan, then the AMers will be the bad-guys. The same for other modes that will not fit into the new bandplan. And finally it does seem like the ARRL is using the IARU Region 2 bandplan as a way to revisit the issue of regulation-by-bandwidth that they have long sought. Designer of the Beer Can Vertical, Pete Czerwinski, W2JTJ, published in QST, November 1955. Here's a similar article published in QST, April 1956: http://www.qsl.net/w3bmd/beercanantenna.htm Back then, cans were made of tin, so soldering was easier then cans made from aluminum types today, if you were so inclined to build one of these things.
