agreed, frustrating. i should not have to pay $25 for the privilege of
knowing that they are out of stock. yes i would have joined eventually
anyway, but i did so *today* with the intent of picking up a device.

I rang them to confirm that it would take 9 months, and that message

So i guess its eBay or wait a month.

i bought new on ebay for 250
but i suggest you buy used, since it's activated already
if you buy new one you need to get sim card with data plan from your

after you activate it you do not need any phone plan for development

I tried purchasing from the market place, but it doesn't have New

 Could you please help.

Ask a friend in the US, or any other country for that matter, if they'll

There are cards similar to SIM cards on CDMA handsets, these are
called RUIM cards. Although it is possible to have CDMA phones without
any cards at all. Not sure about Verizon since I am not based in US.

But ADP1 will only work on GSM phones, not CDMA.

There is a solution without SIM card.
Check this site first.

http://www.android-unleashed.com/2008/11/howto-install-non-market-apk-apps-on.html

then, if adb is enabled, go to the folder that is installed adb, type like
below.

adb shell echo app.setupwizard.disable=1 /data/local.prop
adb shell reboot

I hope this helps.

p.s. In fact, I have no G1 Dev phone. I got this information from

[android-developers] Re: Android Dev Phone 1 DOA, or more correctly, DSAA

2009-01-12 Thread Khakionion

My Dev Phone 1 is DSAA as well. I plugged it in, let it charge for
the three hours that the manual recommends, then turned it on to begin
the setup process. While I was on the phone with T-Mobile, fixing an
issue with my data plan, the screen went blank, and the green LED in
the earpiece stopped flashing. I tried turning it back on, resetting
it, no luck. Tried plugging it in to the charger, removing/reinserting
the battery, nothing, not even an orange charging light. The phone is
completely unresponsive, even tried removing the SD/SIM chips.

Guess I'll be calling support tomorrow to get an RMA on this, because
there's absolutely nothing I can do, the thing is a brick, even though
the only thing I did was charge it and attempt initial setup.

[android-developers] Re: Android Dev Phone 1 - can I gain access to replace/add system fonts ?

2009-01-01 Thread Margaret

I have not got it now

mawei...@gmail.com

2009/1/2 shimo...@gmail.com shimo...@gmail.com:

 Hi,

I bought the Android Dev Phone 1, to use it to develop apps, and port
my existing Palm OS applications to the Android platform.

Amongst other things, I thought I'd have access to it's internals -
mainly to replace the system fonts with ones including Hebrew
characters - so I can add Hebrew contacts support to my apps.

I cant seem to be able to replace/add the fonts in the system/fonts
 directory - since it's read-only.

Is there a way around this on the Dev Phone ?

 Thanks in advance.

perfectly vertical, but the right side should be at an angle at the
bottom of the port and then go completely vertical half way up. I'll
try a little ASCII art here:
_

A 'normal' miniUSB port has sides that are mirror images of itself and
look roughly like the right side of the port on the Dev Phone 1,
albeit a little less perfectly angular.

A 'normal' miniUSB cable will work with the Dev Phone 1, but a Dev
Phone 1 specific cable will *not* work with a 'normal' miniUSB port.
Based on your description I wonder if your phone has a 'normal'
miniUSB port instead of the custom one and you've got a wall charger
with the custom connector, as it should have. If you can provide some
more information on your connector configurations that would be great.

[android-developers] Re: Android Dev Phone 1 DOA, or more correctly, DSAA

2008-12-29 Thread dbkin...@gmail.com

I got another quasi-DOA just before Christmas.
The phone will run for about 1 min and then lock up.
The screen usually keeps displaying the last image, but the phone will
update or not respond to any input.
After a lockup, holding power+home does not turn off the phone, I need
to remove the battery.
I tried charging the battery overnight, no difference.

At some point, I was able to put in my google info quickly enough to
get past the setup stage.

At one point I tried timing the lockups under various use cases.
The phone seems to run fine for about 45-60 seconds.
The 45-60 seconds is from when I first push the power button.
 * I've tried running without a sim card -- still locks up.
 * I've tried running without the SD card -- still locks up.
 * I've tried going into recovery mode -- still locks up.

The only thing that seems suspicious about the phone, is that the
system recovery log complains that E:Can't open /cache/recovery/
command

Also, I haven't tried loading any new firmware on the device.

I haven't tried RMA'ing the phone yet because it works for a while --
it is not a total brick.
I want to have some concrete evidence that there is a legitimate
hardware issue with the phone...
Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,
-Derek

If you look at the FAQ of brightstar (
http://android.brightstarcorp.com/help.php) you will see the phone only gets
shipped with a US cable... the easiest solution if you want to wall charge
it is buy an adapter. You can buy them in any electronics store, it's just a
little piece converting the US socket to a xxx socket.

I'm confused. Are you talking about the 6-pin/4-pin USB wire that doesn't
fit? If that's what you're referring to, then you might want to try again.
It does fit, although the at first glance it might not appear to.

If you're talking about the wall-charger wire, I have no input for you on
that one since I'm in the US and it fits perfectly.

2008-12-19 Thread Jean-Baptiste Queru

On the wall side, the power supply should accept international
voltages (100-240V), so you just need a plain socket adapter
(shouldn't cost more than a few dollars). This was mentioned on the
ordering page.

On the device side, did you try to plug the adapter the right way?
(yes, try the other way).

BTW, the device also charges over USB.

 (yes, try the other way).

BTW, the device also charges over USB.

I received the phone last week but it came packaged with an incorrect

I've emailed both a brightstart email address from there web site and

I just want a power cable for the phone, can anybody give me some

Sorry for the repost.

Yes I can charge the phone with USB and yes the cable will connect to
the wall with a converting. However always charging over USB isn't
always convenient.

However the socket to the phone is incompatible with the phone. It
physically doesn't fit, different shape.

My phone was shipped on 15. Took 3 days from ordering day.

Arrived just now (Spain) :)

I placed an order on the 6th and it shows as departing on the 10th so
my guess is they are pretty swamped with orders.
I still haven't had any emails other than the original order
 acknowledgement.

My tracking details show a scheduled delivery for the 17th which is
hardly what I'd call EXPEDITED delivery from the USA to Australia -
mind you I expect delivery before that date as it hit Sydney on the
 13th.

[android-developers] Re: Android Dev Phone 1 and AT T

2008-12-17 Thread Al Sutton

HTC put built the 'phone so ultimately it's their say. The telecoms body
in each country decides which parts of the spectrum are available for
use for a given purpose, and the carriers decide how to use them.

At the moment the only phone which looks like it may support ATTs' 3G
network is the Kogan Agora, it's specs state it has a 850/1900/2100 MHz
UMTS/HSDPA trasceiver, so you may want to talk to them about testing it
on ATTs network.

The G1 has, according to HTC, the ability to support the global
standard 2100Mhz band for 3G and the 1700Mhz band used by T-Mobile in
the US. It does not, however, have the capability to support the 850Mhz
and 1900Mhz bands that ATT have used.

The biggest problem is that some countries (namely the US and Japan)
didn't follow the Interational Telecommunication Unions spectrum
allocation recommendations, which means that the initial standard of
2100Mhz for 3G couldn't be used in the US because the 2100Mhz band was
already in use for something else (and even after the US regulator freed
some space there wasn't enough to support the number of 3G users the
carriers were expecting).

Hope this is useful,

Al.

P.S. frequency band differences isn't something new to 3G, even with 2G
some of the US carriers were given the OK to deploy GSM equipment
operating on the 900MHz bands which isn't in use elsewhere.

It would be interesting to get to the bottom of this - so to speak,
and find out what exactly determines the frequencies and if the radio
 chip is modable.

this is a MAJOR oversite - I like the G1 but it is somewhat limited
without the 3G
anything we can do? Can HTC provide a hardware mod for this?

If ATT 3G service is on a slightly different frequency than T-Mobile
- can we get the matching radio frequency configured on the G1? or if
we need to install a different radio chip, I assume it is Qualcom, is
it available?, should it be available?

You would be better off waiting for the next Android phone. These
things are generally not interchangable. And really, this phone was
made by HTC for T-Mobile, it's of no surprise that it's designed to
work with their network and not a competitor's.

[android-developers] Re: Android Dev Phone 1 and AT T

2008-12-16 Thread Auauaua

ok - after a quick check
HTC G1 has the following specs - 3G HSDPA US Version: 1700/2100 MHz -
from HTC website
processor/chipset - Qualcomm® MSM7201A™, 528 MHz

ATT service - 3G HSDPA 850/1900Mhz
(here we are talking 3G frequencies only - Edge and 2G are available
and overlapping)

so - is this purely region/country related issue, i.e Canadian outfit
sells unlocked T-Mobil G1's with 1900/2100Mhz set
is it hardware or software set? FCC issues?
Anyone?

Last I checked, T-Mobile didn't have a presence in Canada. Which

From what others are saying around here, it's ATT who did this wrong,
using oddball frequencies.

right - the specs are in question on that Canadian site - the phone is

It would be interesting to get to the bottom of this - so to speak,
and find out what exactly determines the frequencies and if the radio

[android-developers] Re: Android Dev Phone 1™

2008-12-15 Thread mlott

Got my dev phone yesterday a few hours after the email from brightstar
g. GPS is very sensitive down to a few feet. For example on google
maps it followed me around the pool and placed me exactly on spot
within a second. Wonder what it does to battery life. There are
several mapping applications already on marketplace. So far I am very
impressed with the package. The phone itself seems a little cheezy
but in comparison to windows mobile, well, there isn't a
comparison. This OS on one of the nicer upcoming HTC devices will
give the iphone a real competitor.

[android-developers] Re: Android Dev Phone 1 + Shipping to Germany

2008-12-15 Thread Tim

Go to http://www.ups.com/WebTracking/reference and put your order
number into the shipping reference field and your destination and a
range of dates to cover when you ordered and you should see the
tracking details.
I placed an order on the 6th and it shows as departing on the 10th so
my guess is they are pretty swamped with orders.
I still haven't had any emails other than the original order
acknowledgement.

My tracking details show a scheduled delivery for the 17th which is
hardly what I'd call EXPEDITED delivery from the USA to Australia -
mind you I expect delivery before that date as it hit Sydney on the
13th.

The price seems fair, but adding VAT + Import Taxes would add a

Does Google ship all of its devices from the US or are devices for

[android-developers] Re: Android Dev Phone 1™

2008-12-13 Thread Doug Sims
I ordered mine on December 10 with regular ground shipping to Memphis. My
credit card was charged on Dec 11 (by Gotta Go Blue.) I've called the
Brightstarcorp number repeatedly since then and finally got through today.
I spoke with Dana who was, as someone else in this thread mentioned,
absolutely the nicest and most pleasant customer service person you might
wish for. She said my order was still in process and hadn't been shipped
yet. Apparently she's the only customer service person working on this.
I'm a little frustrated by the ordering fulfullment process at Brightstar
but appreciate the information Dana has provided.

I ordered on 12/9, and I called just now and was told by a lady named
Dana, that my phone is in today's queue and will be shipped from the
warehouse today.
It's a good thing I got 2-day shipping, I can't wait much longer. It's
looking like I won't be getting it until Monday. :(

2008-12-12 Thread Tammen Bruccoleri
I called and left a message with the Android Dev 1 Phone sales team,
inquiring about the status of my Dev phone which was purchased on 12.09.
Thinking that I would never even get a reply. I went to the water cooler and
came back, found a message on my voicemail. Donna or Dana pleasantly left my
FedEx tracking number and phone number to call back if I had any questions
or concerns. Not getting a tracking automatically was a bummer and I was
kinda concerned about my order. However, I have not seen this type of superb
customer service in such a long time. Donna or Dana if your reading these
threads your doing a great job !!! Can't wait to open this early Christmas
present... Should be at my door tomorrow according to the FedEx tracking
number.

A few people have received theirs, in fact someone who lives about 90
miles from me got theirs. It seems that today Brightstar shipped
orders from 12/8 and 12/9. I called today and she told me mine was in
the queue for today, and that it would ship today. I never got a
tracking number from them, and the website doesn't display it either.
I used the Fedex Track by Reference tool, and it came up with the
order, and my phone had actually shipped before I called Brightstar. I
think that if they got your order, it shipped today.

[android-developers] Re: Android Dev Phone 1™

2008-12-11 Thread cyntacks

Hey guys,

Just an FYI, I called Brightstar yesterday to inquire on my order.
After calling a boatload of times and receiving the Sorry we missed
your call... message, I was able to get a human on the phone. The
woman who answered (who was EXTREMELY nice btw) explained that has
heard there may be issues with the shipping emails as others have
contacted her regarding not recieving them. But, she also explained
that the order process can take 3 days or so to physically ship. She
went as far as to tell me what order number they were currently
processing and where my order fell in the list. Lastly, she explained
she is the ONLY one taking calls for Android, hence the near
impossibility to get through on the phone...

With that said, this doesn't answer the disappearing order question,
but the rep. at Brightstar was really helpful.

2008-12-11 Thread nutha...@gmail.com

Following up on my earlier post...after failing to reach Brightstar
via phone, I sent an email and received a response in an hour or so:
Your order will ship no later than Friday 12/12. You will receive an
email with tracking information once it ships.

I never got any shipping email, but FedEx left a door tag, and
checking the shipping information, it matches the tracking ID from
Brightstar. Ironically it's shipping from about 20 miles away from
where I live.

So, I'm hoping to have a G1 dev phone tomorrow. I ordered Saturday
morning.

It seems Brightstar is a bit overwhelmed with this program, but I am
cautiously optimistic now. Patience!

[android-developers] Re: Android Dev Phone 1™

2008-12-09 Thread Pierre Bonnefoy
Considering it statesThe device currently costs $399 (USD) (including free
shipping in the US), and will be available for purchase in 18 international
markets, including the US, UK, Germany, Japan, India, Canada, France,
Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria,
Sweden, Finland, Poland, and Hungary. We will continue to expand this
program into new geographies over time. Check this page for updated
information.

As New Zealand is not in the list, I would consider that it won't ship
there. Sure that is frustrating. So a little word from a google staff member
clarifying how often this list could be updated would be welcome.

Thx

2008/12/9 Josh Roesslein [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If they are shipping internationally to other counties, I don't see why not
 ship it to New Zealand.
Not sure if the phone will work there, depends if its band frequencies
 match up with your carriers.
Hopefully a Google staff member can clear this up.

Justin when will the devices be available shipped directly from the UK

Are there any plans to ship from UK to UK people?

That is not an answer... that just quotes the web page, which as a
developer I have already visited myself hence how I already know the
cost!?
My question is when will the phone be available to buy direct from the
UK? i.e. from Google UK so that it gets shipped from Google in the UK
and hence I won't have to pay the import tax or the shipping.

I'm not sure why you're making the assumption you ever will.

Google just aren't set up to handle worldwide distribution of physical
goods efficiently, and I'm not sure that given the current economic
climate it's something they'd set up given that there are going to be
other methods of getting Android devices..

Just checked the shipping fee to France, it costs 180 USD!!! It is
almost the half of the price of device.

  Hi,
I'm really interested in the possibility of buying a AndroidDev
 Phone1 (--http://code.google.com/android/dev-devices.html), the

According to the site, it will be (?is?) available for order in
Germany, I can't find any information about the details though.
The price seems fair, but adding VAT + Import Taxes would add a BIG
amount of money to the final number (and a lot of hassle).

Does Google ship all of its devices from the US or are devices for
European Devs shipped from inside the EU?

To The Netherlands shipping and handling is $178.90. I even got a
phone call from the fraud prevention team of my credit card's bank
today, because they apparently found it a suspicious transaction.
Well, hopefully I'll now have a functional G1 soon.
