Re: [arr] HT Brunch cover story on ARR

2007-10-28 Thread Ramesh R
This is an excellent read. Thanks for sending it, Gopal.

What irks me however are the poses that the photographer has had ARR do. The
regular pics are fine. It's just the 'Titanic' pose, and the
reclining-in-deep-thought pose in his studio that are annoying. I do recognize
that it's simply awesome to capture an artist in his moment of peace or
excitement or elation. But it's downright insulting to set up all this with a
fake moment. Is there anyone who thinks those two pictures were ARR's own
genuine actions/pose?

ARR being such a humble and down-to-earth person went out of the way to oblige
them. The interview even mentions his discomfort in posing for the pictures.
I'm glad ARR stood his ground in not granting them what they wanted in the
picture with his wife. It's a shame that for all the great nuggets in the
article it had to be marred by those artificial poses. Don't these fellows have
anything like a journalistic integrity?

I second that Thulasi, couldn't agree with you more.

I had to dedicate two hours for penning this review. I appreciate
those who

First things first: ARR is doing re-recording/BGM for ATM. It's
confirmed
from reliable sources. Don't keep on spreading rumors. Rather, start
 spreading this information.

Understand the reality: You cannot have ATM songs in a movie like
Boys and
the vice versa is also not possible. ARR has come up with some working
numbers to suit the image of a hero who has the potential to hit
deep. So,
free your mind and enjoy the songs given by the musical genius.

A bit of history- The lesson learnt: Till 2001, if an ARR song
doesn't catch
me instantly, I used to keep rambling like many in this group (!). I
remember how bad I felt about mudhalvan songs initally. Later I
realized how
those songs grew in me. Similar case happened with Alaipayuthey. I never
liked yaaro yaarodi, evano oruvan. But later, I realized how ARRs song
create a swinging shift thereby making someone to rethink what
he/she has
thought about it initially. Okay there you go! That's ARR for you. I
made
something firm in me. i.e. Not to take any quick decisions for ARR
albums.
This strategy has worked great for me. For example, I never liked tu
bin and
lukka chuppi from RDB initially but I believed that ARR's song will
grow in
me. Later I felt that lukka chuppi is a gem of a song and tu bin
bataye a
 golden gift from ARR.

Bottom line: Accept ARRs songs as it comes and it will definitely strike
gold in you simply because, music from ARR is not a result of ARRs
work but
ARRs blood. A man who has dedicated his life to music and a man who
has the
courage to experiment new sounds and genre of music. A simple
example: When
did rap become famous in regional movies? Only after ARR bought rap
stuff in
 alai payuthe.

Okay, lets dive into the subject of this mail.

 ATM Review:

After Laggan, all songs in an ARR album have caught me instantly
only in ATM
i.e. m hearing all songs without skipping from day 1.

My pick of the album: Merlyn Monroe (just a shade sweeter than all
the other
 magnificent songs in the album)

 Album rating: 10/10.

Bottomline: A versatile Rahman in show. ARR makes music sound easy
but it is
not easy. ATM has a bunch of complex compositions. Kudos to all
lyricists.

   *Ellapugazhum*

 Brilliance of ARR

ARR's voice and rendition; Great and mesmerizing. ARR adds life to
the song

The use of electric guitar - that's ARR for you

Magnificent use of chords that pump the adrenalin (sample 4:02 - 4:10)

The way the song ends.. Scintillating!

Reverberating chiming section throughout the song - ARRs mind in play

Constant energy-sprinkling percussion which sounds great in 5.1

 *Merlyn Monroe*

 Brilliance of ARR

 Stylish Stylish Stylish

The way the song begins is too sexy. LOVE IT!

Notice that there are *NO* percussion in this song. Just the chiming
sounds
with bass guitar does the trick for the song. That's ARR for you again

Amazing additional programming. High-tech sounds embellish the song

Casual rendition by male singer and female voice getting quite squeaky..
This balance has worked out great in the song

Mesmerizing male and female alaaps. A

 complex song to execute.

 *Valayapatti*

 Brilliance of ARR

Check out different layers in the song. All unique but very tough to
compose

Raaga and corresponding alaap. Just magnificient! Come on, could anyone
merge both folk and carnatic genre?? Only ARR can handle it so
professionally. Result: A magnificient song like this

Use of nathaswaram.. ARR makes even that instrument sound so pleasant to
 hear.

The connection between both charanam and pallavi is too good. Folk +
carnatic + percussion alaap (dheem thanaku dheem)

Use of bass guitar and making it play all along when the raaga alaap is
 rendered. This is vintage ARR.

Use of Naresh and madhumitha is commendable

 *Kelamal*

 Brilliance of ARR

Only ARR can handle melodies like munbae vaa, kaatril(from GF) and a
song
like this.. All are melodies but fall info different percussion
genre. Just
 awesome.

Ketu rasitha padal ondrai bit is amazing and mesmerizing. An alternate
version of it in the middle of the song is just scintillating

Singer selection has again worked out beautifully for ARR.

The song decorated by various versions of chiming sounds

Kokilam Kokilam bit is very much hummable.

A simple percussion handled so professionally to suit a melody like this

 *Maduraiku*

 Brilliance of ARR

Again, the instrument melam sounds professional when ARR uses it. This
aspect as always been very unique for ARR. He does something to
make the
instruments and singers voice to suit the mood of the song. That's the
 brilliance of ARR

Song beginning is very catchy and suits village mood

me..But its really disheartening to c lots of negative reviews on this
movie..hmmm I want to put in my thots on d so called reviews given by lots of
ppl here..

  1.Why compare???
Guys,v very well know ATM is a perfect commercial movie and u
know Vijay comes as some Super hero who has this extra ordinary power of
forseeing wat s gonna happen in future(don't know for how long directors r
gonna stick to d same old stories, huh)After having such a story line, how can
one expect to this album with roja, dilse kind a music huh plsss..ARR has
perfectly done justice to his job by offering great foot tapping music..If u
visit these vijay forums d music's reach is perfectly felt der..Der r still
lots of places wer ppl don't even know if der existed a movie Uyire, for those
ppl Rahman had to do some music and he has done with style..so plss before u
compare,do it with stuff like God Father, parashuram,New no issues..For me ATM
is d best commercial movie given by our Boss..

2.No Remixes pls!!Not this director pls!!
Utter nonsense!!ARR himself doesn't like remixes tat v know but
wen d story requires it he has to do it..Tats wat is required of a MD wen u
score a music for a movie..and god tat ponmagal song doesn't deserve to b
criticized so much guys, pls give it some time...now comes d axe on d
directors..d same set of ppl wer crying few yrs bak tat rahman is not doing
music in tamil and now wen he does it he s being criticized..if u think
maniratnam and shankar can alone bring d best out of our boss,v ll have to wait
an entire year for one rahman album..Guys many ppl like me hardly understand
hindi, for me an album by ARR in tamil is like a festival time..so pls I need
Rahman to compose more of tamil songs for tat albums like ATM r a real answer
guys..

  3.Early Reviews!!
One thing I hate in this forum is ppl queing up to give in der
reviews as soon a album is released..Even b4 I cud grab a cd for myself I saw
lots of reviews both positive ones and negative ones..many wud just go by wat u
guys say and think its not even worth getting d cd..is this wat v r here
for???If u dint like it wait give it some time and den start posting in ur
views,pl this is my very very sincere request…

  4.Too much of analysation!!
  I don't know anything in music,don't know wat u guys r talking
most of d time..But d fact tat v r all his fans is wat v r here for..my sincere
advice to lots of music pundits here is don't analyse an album like ATM with
all ur extraordinary skills in music,it ll surely b a letdown..just forget
everything and enjoy and I am sure u ll love it immediately..

  5.D so called Reviews!!
  the Rahman touch is missing
todays is a sad day for rahman fans
this reminds me of tat song
Guys pls give it a break..Its so disgusting wen someone in d name of a fan
questions Rahman's capabilities..If u dint like it put it in a way tat doesn't
hurt fans like me ok..say u feel it s like tat and not general statements like
d above ones..

  6.My take on ATM!!
Finally, for me ATM is just a fabulous album..its bin quite
sometime tat I ve liked an entire album but ATM has made me feel it..Its like
yuvi 6 sixers for me..wow valayapathi, merlin menroa, ella pugazhum just bowled
me over..According to me this album is well above Godfather and can equally
place it near shivaji..

We all know RahulDravid is a technically brilliant batsman,
occasionally he plays a dhoni kind of innings according to d NEED OF D
HOUR,does tat by any way question Dravid's technical brilliance??its very
similar with our boss too..V know his brilliance, occasionally movies like this
shows our boss' versatility..so plsss don't make absurd remarks based on ur
opinions in public forums like this..Enjoy ATM guys and lets keep waiting for
Jodha akbar..

Very well said, Wasim about the expectations. I agree with you.

I also hope they have good lyrics for hindi and think it's ujjaiynee only.

 Hi all,

I had a couple of questions, please chime in if anybody knows.

 1. Re: ATM - Couple of songs have been credited to Ujjaini. Is this
the same Ujjaini from Saregampa Challenge 2005? Because, if it is
then it's great to know that Rahman is tapping in the talent emerging
from these competitions. I would love to see Rahman give opportunity
to Mauli, Sumedha or Amanat from SRGMP C2007.

 2. Re: Sivaji(Hindi) - Does anybody know who is doing the lyrics in
Hindi? I seriously hope they rope in Javed Akthar sahab or Prasoon
Joshi for lyrics. A lot of dubbed albums have suffered the fate of
 bad lyrics when translated.

p.s. I have been hooked on ATM. The album keeps growing on me, all
songs hold their own. Whoever has done the Remix of Ponmagal, has
done a great job. But the tortoise of the album, which has slowly and
steadily won the race of winning my heart is Kelamal Kaiyile. I
didn't like this song in the beginning, I thought it was average, but
wow, it was just my brain trying to understand what is going on in
that song. It has some serious experimentation - with tamil song and
subtle techo/trans beats. Only Rahman can think, create and deliver
 something like that.

People talk about expectations from Rahman albums, having too high
expectations etc.. Honestly I do not have any expectations of Rahman.
I'm a devotee of Rahman, and take whatever he has to offer, as a
boon.

All that is good and successful comes from God, all that is bad and
failure is because of myself - Rahman himself (I can't remember the
exact phrase but it was to the same effect.)

 Always,
 Proud to be a Rahmaniac.

Re: [arr] Two boons... My Take

2007-10-28 Thread arr pavan
My take on two boons :

  1. I will ask God to give two more A.R.R.s. (Two Clones.., mmm no..,
Perfectly three ARRs of same calibre. Equally we have three ARRs without any
single difference in talents and appearances between them)

  2. I will ask ARR to send one ARR to London to work for English/International
projects. One ARR to stay in Tamil Nadu permanently to compose for more south
indian film projects. Third ARR to stay in Bombay to work in Bollywood other
North Indian projects if offered.

P.S.: If one ARR does this much Social Service for Poverty, TB, Cancer,
Mental Disability etc. with his music, Imagine how much charity work, Three
ARRs can give to this world through their Rocking music ? These two boons
ultimately fulfill all kinds of fans with quality of music plus quantity? WHat
you say ?

Re: [arr] My ATM review

2007-10-28 Thread $*$ PaVaN $*$
Wonderfull review Thulsi :)

Thulasi Ram [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I had to dedicate two hours for
penning this review. I appreciate those who take time to go through this.
Thanks.

First things first: ARR is doing re-recording/BGM for ATM. It's confirmed from
reliable sources. Don't keep on spreading rumors. Rather, start spreading this
information.

Understand the reality: You cannot have ATM songs in a movie like Boys and the
vice versa is also not possible. ARR has come up with some working numbers to
suit the image of a hero who has the potential to hit deep. So, free your mind
and enjoy the songs given by the musical genius.

A bit of history- The lesson learnt: Till 2001, if an ARR song doesn't catch me
instantly, I used to keep rambling like many in this group (!). I remember how
bad I felt about mudhalvan songs initally. Later I realized how those songs
grew in me. Similar case happened with Alaipayuthey. I never liked yaaro
yaarodi, evano oruvan. But later, I realized how ARRs song create a swinging
shift thereby making someone to rethink what he/she has thought about it
initially. Okay there you go! That's ARR for you. I made something firm in me.
i.e. Not to take any quick decisions for ARR albums. This strategy has worked
great for me. For example, I never liked tu bin and lukka chuppi from RDB
initially but I believed that ARR's song will grow in me. Later I felt that
lukka chuppi is a gem of a song and tu bin bataye a golden gift from ARR.

Bottom line: Accept ARRs songs as it comes and it will definitely strike gold
in you simply because, music from ARR is not a result of ARRs work but ARRs
blood. A man who has dedicated his life to music and a man who has the courage
to experiment new sounds and genre of music. A simple example: When did rap
become famous in regional movies? Only after ARR bought rap stuff in alai
payuthe.

Okay, lets dive into the subject of this mail.

ATM Review:

After Laggan, all songs in an ARR album have caught me instantly only in ATM
i.e. m hearing all songs without skipping from day 1.

My pick of the album: Merlyn Monroe (just a shade sweeter than all the other
magnificent songs in the album)

Album rating: 10/10.

Bottomline: A versatile Rahman in show. ARR makes music sound easy but it is
not easy. ATM has a bunch of complex compositions. Kudos to all lyricists.

  Ellapugazhum
  Brilliance of ARR
ARR's voice and rendition; Great and mesmerizing. ARR adds life to the song
The use of electric guitar - that's ARR for you
Magnificent use of chords that pump the adrenalin (sample 4:02 - 4:10)
The way the song ends.. Scintillating!
Reverberating chiming section throughout the song - ARRs mind in play
Constant energy-sprinkling percussion which sounds great in 5.1
  Merlyn Monroe
  Brilliance of ARR
Stylish Stylish Stylish
The way the song begins is too sexy. LOVE IT!
Notice that there are NO percussion in this song. Just the chiming sounds
with bass guitar does the trick for the song. That's ARR for you again
Amazing additional programming. High-tech sounds embellish the song
Casual rendition by male singer and female voice getting quite squeaky..
This balance has worked out great in the song
Mesmerizing male and female alaaps. A

  complex song to execute.
  Valayapatti
  Brilliance of ARR
Check out different layers in the song. All unique but very tough to compose
Raaga and corresponding alaap. Just magnificient! Come on, could anyone
merge both folk and carnatic genre?? Only ARR can handle it so professionally.
Result: A magnificient song like this
Use of nathaswaram.. ARR makes even that instrument sound so pleasant to
hear.
The connection between both charanam and pallavi is too good. Folk +
carnatic + percussion alaap (dheem thanaku dheem)
Use of bass guitar and making it play all along when the raaga alaap is
rendered. This is vintage ARR.
Use of Naresh and madhumitha is commendable
  Kelamal
  Brilliance of ARR
Only ARR can handle melodies like munbae vaa, kaatril(from GF) and a song
like this.. All are melodies but fall info different percussion genre. Just
A simple percussion handled so professionally to suit a melody like this
  Maduraiku
  Brilliance of ARR
Again, the instrument melam sounds professional when ARR uses it. This
aspect as always been very unique for ARR. He does something to make the
instruments and singers voice to suit the mood of the song. That's the
brilliance of ARR
Song beginning is very catchy and

My take on two boons :

1. I will ask God to give two more A.R.R.s. (Two Clones.., mmm no.., Perfectly
three ARRs of same calibre. Equally we have three ARRs without any single
difference in talents and appearances between them)

2. I will ask ARR to send one ARR to London to work for English/Internation al
projects. One ARR to stay in Tamil Nadu permanently to compose for more south
indian film projects. Third ARR to stay in Bombay to work in Bollywood other
North Indian projects if offered.

P.S.: If one ARR does this much Social Service for Poverty, TB, Cancer, Mental
Disability etc. with his music, Imagine how much charity work, Three ARRs can
give to this world through their Rocking music ? These two boons ultimately
fulfill all kinds of fans with quality of music plus quantity? WHat you say ?

Rahman himself.
Did anybody watch that? Can some one get me what song was it?

Yes..Many has different opinion...even i thought BOSE is just waste of
money, but when i listen ARR music in Bose QC2 and when you compare the

but i should say even Sennheiser is beautifully crafted to produce very good
music...My friend has this one...ARR music sounds greatly on
Sennheiser as Gomzy

My roommate is a very die hard fan of Ilayaraja... but when he started

[arr] Re: My ATM review

2007-10-28 Thread izham_jamal
now tats d brilliance of Thulasi Ram...hehe...gud job

--- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Thulasi Ram [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:

I had to dedicate two hours for penning this review. I appreciate
those who
take time to go through this. Thanks.

First things first: ARR is doing re-recording/BGM for ATM. It's
confirmed
from reliable sources. Don't keep on spreading rumors. Rather, start
 spreading this information.

Understand the reality: You cannot have ATM songs in a movie like
Boys and
the vice versa is also not possible. ARR has come up with
some working
numbers to suit the image of a hero who has the potential to hit
deep. So,
free your mind and enjoy the songs given by the musical genius.

never
liked yaaro yaarodi, evano oruvan. But later, I realized how ARRs
song
create a swinging shift thereby making someone to rethink what
he/she has
thought about it initially. Okay there you go! That's ARR for you.
I made
something firm in me. i.e. Not to take any quick decisions for ARR
albums.
This strategy has worked great for me. For example, I never liked
tu bin and
lukka chuppi from RDB initially but I believed that ARR's song will
grow in
me. Later I felt that lukka chuppi is a gem of a song and tu bin
bataye a
 golden gift from ARR.

Bottom line: Accept ARRs songs as it comes and it will definitely
strike
gold in you simply because, music from ARR is not a result of ARRs
work but
ARRs blood. A man who has dedicated his life to music and a man who
has the
courage to experiment new sounds and genre of music. A simple
example: When
did rap become famous in regional movies? Only after ARR bought rap
stuff in
 alai payuthe.

Okay, lets dive into the subject of this mail.

 ATM Review:

After Laggan, all songs in an ARR album have caught me instantly
only in ATM
i.e. m hearing all songs without skipping from day 1.

My pick of the album: Merlyn Monroe (just a shade sweeter than all
the other
 magnificent songs in the album)

 Album rating: 10/10.

Bottomline: A versatile Rahman in show. ARR makes music sound easy
but it is
not easy. ATM has a bunch of complex compositions. Kudos to all
lyricists.

   *Ellapugazhum*

 Brilliance of ARR

ARR's voice and rendition; Great and mesmerizing. ARR adds life to
the song

The use of electric guitar - that's ARR for you

Magnificent use of chords that pump the adrenalin (sample 4:02 -
4:10)

The way the song ends.. Scintillating!

Reverberating chiming section throughout the song - ARRs mind in
play

Constant energy-sprinkling percussion which sounds great in 5.1

 *Merlyn Monroe*

 Brilliance of ARR

 Stylish Stylish Stylish

The way the song begins is too sexy. LOVE IT!

Notice that there are *NO* percussion in this song. Just the
chiming sounds
with bass guitar does the trick for the song. That's ARR for you
again

Amazing additional programming. High-tech sounds embellish the song

Casual rendition by male singer and female voice getting quite
squeaky..
This balance has worked out great in the song

Mesmerizing male and female alaaps. A

 complex song to execute.

 *Valayapatti*

 Brilliance of ARR

Check out different layers in the song. All unique but very tough
to compose

Raaga and corresponding alaap. Just magnificient! Come on, could
anyone
merge both folk and carnatic genre?? Only ARR can handle it so
professionally. Result: A magnificient song like this

Use of nathaswaram.. ARR makes even that instrument sound so
pleasant to
 hear.

The connection between both charanam and pallavi is too good. Folk +
carnatic + percussion alaap (dheem thanaku dheem)

Use of bass guitar and making it play all along when the raaga
alaap is
 rendered. This is vintage ARR.

Use of Naresh and madhumitha is commendable

 *Kelamal*

 Brilliance of ARR

Only ARR can handle melodies like munbae vaa, kaatril(from GF) and
a song
like this.. All are melodies but fall info different percussion
genre. Just
 awesome.

Ketu rasitha padal ondrai bit is amazing and mesmerizing. An
alternate
version of it in the middle of the song is just scintillating

Singer selection has again worked out beautifully for ARR.

The song decorated by various versions of chiming sounds

Kokilam Kokilam bit is very much hummable.

A simple percussion handled so professionally to suit a melody like
this

 *Maduraiku*

 Brilliance of ARR

Again, the instrument melam sounds professional when ARR uses it.
This
aspect as always been very unique for ARR. He does something to
make the
instruments and singers voice to suit the mood of the song. That's
the
 brilliance of ARR

[arr] ATM - My View/Reaction

2007-10-28 Thread Sam Sujith
1. Ellapugazhum: Requisite big opening to the song...nice to hear
the claps, vocals and the guitar chug to achieve the bigness of the
sound, instead of the trumpets and timpanis and such...also, the
opening sounds are very minimal and still owing to their sound design
convey the bigness properly...but then, the ensuing rhythm is a let
down..kind of wimpy...though the rhythm seems to carry the song, its a
letdown for me...I like the way the song is tuned...a straight forward
minor scale tune, with no elaborate ornaments and all...and eschewing
the tired pallavi-charanam format...But why the Michale Jackson like
imitation at one point? It may or may not have been intentional, but
kind of robs something for me... I like the solo horn(s) in the
interlude...the arrangements become dense and light at the proper
moments conveying a nice punch (hey thoda after the first charanam for
example)...a very different end to the song with some high pitched
vocals...

2.Ponmagal: Couldnt quite warm up to this song...the rap turns me
off...liked the charanam though...nicely built up, and ARR even
samples the original singer from the old original song at couple of
points...that was a nice twist...

3.Kelaamal: Another disappointment for me...depending on my mood. Of
most of the times I heard this song, it sounded tired..the tune,
arrangements and all...Blame my perceptions, but the tune sounded
nomadic...couldnt quite get the direction of it...seemed to
wander...And the arrangement was a bigger let down...standard 4/4 kick
and bass, with some gated sounds and arps and some bells and
whistles...The violin pieces only added to the normalness of the
song...I guess I would have loved this song, if it were given some
Narumugaye like arrangements...On the other hand, if I am in a good
mood, I can just listen to it as it as and not be bothered by it...but
its not happening much with this song...

4.Nee Marilyn: Now this I adore...the playfullness in the song is very
evident without beating me over the head...nice buildup right from the
beginning...the DJ naan phrase is absolutely tasty...the singers had
the perfect delivery...the FMish synth lead, the portamento motif are
delicious...also love the way the song is structured...in short, I
like everything about the song (lyrics I dont understand)...and best
of all, I can bob my head to it..

5.Maduraikku: The tune sounded vaguely familiar...but I love the
timbre of the voices...made a huge difference...I love the way the
charanam is tuned...and the way the female singer finishes off the
second charanam is an absolute delight...made me wish that she had
sung the whole song in that octave...her timbre is raw and beautiful
there...I have never been disappointed in general by ARR's nadaswaram
solos and they dont disappoint here either...the drums sounded a bit
weak and cramped for me though...it cud be the speakers...but I
remember the rhythm sections in Sangamam being more punchy, breathy
and spacey, and Sangamam employed a huge range of percussion...

6.Valayapatti: Another delightful song for me...A natural progression
for Kummi Aadi...or rather a better version of Kummi Aadi...love the
introduction, the female voice introducing the more sombre part of the
song...the following arrangements make a better sense when viewed over
the course of the whole intro, rather than the individual parts...how
they say about sum being greater than the parts...and then some
instruments introduce us the valayapatti melody line and the male
singers just rush from there...the whole pallavi makes for an
interesting listen...with the male voices being rumbunctious and
rushed, while the female lines are subdued and relaxed...couldnt make
out much out of the first interlude, probably works better on the
screen...the charanam arrangements are very nice again for me...pa pa
ni sa lines are introduced as swaras by the male vocals in the first
charanam, while the female sings some lyrics to the same tune in the
second charanam...and the remaining lines are the same pattern over
diffeent set of notes for the male and female voices...like it when
the whole chorus joins in saying the raga name...observe the weak and
strong accents of the bars when saying kalyani, bhagyasri, neelambari
versus sindhubhairavi...a change from where the vocal emphasis is more
rhythm oriented to something lyric oriented...I am a zero in carnatic
, but I like the way swaras sound...neways, I think I am ramblng
on...but this song works for me...

overall, i cud appreciate ARR doing varied projects at the same time,
but from this album, I would come back and listen to nee marlin and
valayapatti frequently, and i wud listen to ellapuzhagum and
maduraikku now and then...what i mean is it cud have been a better
album, so in a sense, some sort of disappointment...Now ARR definelty
knows better than me on how the songs are and how they shud be
like, its just that for my tastes, it wasnt a complete match...not
that it matters what i feel or

Re: [arr] ARR music + Bose Headphones...

2007-10-28 Thread kaissiom
If I may add my 2 cents:

I have been collecting quality headphones/audio equipment, and from my
personal experience I can say that in my opinion Bose is overrated. I
have couple of Bose headphones (+ Bose HomeTheater) and they are great
at reproducing bass, but they really compromise in reproducing mids
highs. So, if I really want to emphasize on bass, I listen to it on
Bose, but my $70 Aiwa HP-AK100, which I have for regular use,
outperforms Bose in other areas.

I also prefer Sennheiser over Bose. Just the fact that Bose doesn't
even disclose their frequency ranges/specification is really
frustrating because you can't compare Bose with other headphones based
on specs.

But it really comes down to personal preference and your ear for
detail. My mom can't tell the difference between Bose and RCA.

If you are really in the market to buy Bose headphones, I recommend
you consider these as well:

1. Bang Olufson A8 earphones:
http://www.bang-olufsen.com/page.asp?id=46

2. Sennheiser HD 595:
http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/icm_eng.nsf/root/05343

3. Etymotic ER.4:
http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er4.aspx

And if you want ultimate headphones...then these:

1. Shure E500:
http://www.shure.com/PersonalAudio/Products/Earphones/SEModels/us_pa_se530_content

2. Denon AH-D5000:
http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3456.asp

I'm currently saving up for E500, it has three dedicated drivers to
cater to highs/mids/lows and they have fit them all in a plug, let's see.

What irks me however are the poses that the photographer has had ARR

reclining-in-deep-thought pose in his studio that are annoying. I do
recognize that it's simply awesome to capture an artist in his moment
of peace or excitement or elation. But it's downright insulting to set
up all this with a fake moment. Is there anyone who thinks those two
pictures were ARR's own genuine actions/pose?

ARR being such a humble and down-to-earth person went out of the way
to oblige them. The interview even mentions his discomfort in posing
for the pictures. I'm glad ARR stood his ground in not granting them
what they wanted in the picture with his wife. It's a shame that for
all the great nuggets in the article it had to be marred by those
artificial poses. Don't these fellows have anything like a
journalistic integrity?

2007-10-28 Thread haja nawaz
very nice review buddy...ON initial hearing i dint like valayapetti and ella
puhalum...
but i saw many people rating ella puhalum as the chartbuster one ...i am not
able to digest it as the opening song of vijay after the aadungada song ..
(Taste differs)...Of course it sounds different and may be a different
opening for vijay...

but now i m very much into the valayapatti song ..it is th toughest and most
beautiful composition, i wud say

but do anybody note that the madhurai song sound similar to mathadu
malligai from arunachalam...only at the end of the charanam..

also 'Kelaamal' song has some touches of aagaya vennilave,an ilayaraja
song...

not much but when i hear these two songs every time it reminds those 2 songs
...

But ARR has done RICH AND DIFFICULT COMPOSITIONS VERY EASILY IN THIS ALBUM..
I M PROUD TO BUY THIS KETTAVARELLAM PADUM ALBUM ON THE FIRST DAY ITSELF...

 ATM Review:

After Laggan, all songs in an ARR album have caught me instantly only
in ATM
i.e. m hearing all songs without skipping from day 1.

My pick of the album: Merlyn Monroe (just a shade sweeter than all the
other
 magnificent songs in the album)

 Album rating: 10/10.

Bottomline: A versatile Rahman in show. ARR makes music sound easy but
it is
not easy. ATM has a bunch of complex compositions. Kudos to all
lyricists.

 Brilliance of ARR

ARR's voice and rendition; Great and mesmerizing. ARR adds life to the
song

The use of electric guitar - that's ARR for you

Magnificent use of chords that pump the adrenalin (sample 4:02 - 4:10)

The way the song ends.. Scintillating!

Reverberating chiming section throughout the song - ARRs mind in play

Constant energy-sprinkling percussion which sounds great in 5.1

 *Merlyn Monroe*

 Brilliance of ARR

 Stylish Stylish Stylish

The way the song begins is too sexy. LOVE IT!

Notice that there are *NO* percussion in this song. Just the chiming
sounds
with bass guitar does the trick for the song. That's ARR for you again

Amazing additional programming. High-tech sounds embellish the song

Casual rendition by male singer and female voice getting quite
squeaky..
This balance has worked out great in the song

Mesmerizing male and female alaaps. A

 complex song to execute.

 Brilliance of ARR

Check out different layers in the song. All unique but very tough to
compose

Raaga and corresponding alaap. Just magnificient! Come on, could
anyone
merge both folk and carnatic genre?? Only ARR can handle it so
professionally. Result: A magnificient song like this

Use of nathaswaram.. ARR makes even that instrument sound so pleasant
to
 hear.

The connection between both charanam and pallavi is too good. Folk +
carnatic + percussion alaap (dheem thanaku dheem)

 Use of bass guitar and

What irks me however are the poses that the photographer has had ARR
do. The regular pics are fine. It's just the 'Titanic' pose, and the
reclining-in-deep-thought pose in his studio that are annoying. I do
recognize that it's simply awesome to capture an artist in his moment
of peace or excitement or elation.

Don't these fellows have anything like a
 journalistic integrity?

good for me..But its really disheartening to c lots of negative reviews on
this movie..hmmm I want to put in my thots on d so called reviews given by
  lots of ppl here..

  1.Why compare???
Guys,v very well know ATM is a perfect commercial movie and
u know Vijay comes as some Super hero who has this extra ordinary power of
forseeing wat s gonna happen in future(don't know for how long directors r
gonna stick to d same old stories, huh)After having such a story line, how can
one expect to this album with roja, dilse kind a music huh plsss..ARR has
perfectly done justice to his job by offering great foot tapping music..If u
visit these vijay forums d music's reach is perfectly felt der..Der r still
lots of places wer ppl don't even know if der existed a movie Uyire, for
those ppl Rahman had to do some music and he has done with style..so plss
before u compare,do it with stuff like God Father, parashuram,New no
issues..For me ATM is d best commercial movie given by our Boss..

2.No Remixes pls!!Not this director pls!!
Utter nonsense!!ARR himself doesn't like remixes tat v know
but wen d story requires it he has to do it..Tats wat is required of a MD
wen u score a music for a movie..and god tat ponmagal song doesn't deserve
to b criticized so much guys, pls give it some time...now comes d axe on d
directors..d same set of ppl wer crying few yrs bak tat rahman is not doing
music in tamil and now wen he does it he s being criticized..if u think
maniratnam and shankar can alone bring d best out of our boss,v ll have to
wait an entire year for one rahman album..Guys many ppl like me hardly
understand hindi, for me an album by ARR in tamil is like a festival time..so
pls I need Rahman to compose more of tamil songs for tat albums like ATM r a
  real answer guys..

  3.Early Reviews!!
One thing I hate in this forum is ppl queing up to give in
der reviews as soon a album is released..Even b4 I cud grab a cd for myself
I saw lots of reviews both positive ones and negative ones..many wud just go
by wat u guys say and think its not even worth getting d cd..is this wat v r
here for???If u dint like it wait give it some time and den start posting in
ur views,pl this is my very very sincere request…

  4.Too much of analysation!!
  I don't know anything in music,don't know wat u guys r
talking most of d time..But d fact tat v r all his fans is wat v r here
for..my sincere advice to lots of music pundits here is don't analyse an
album like ATM with all ur extraordinary skills in music,it ll surely b a
letdown..just forget everything and enjoy and I am sure u ll love it
  immediately..

  5.D so called Reviews!!
  the Rahman touch is missing
todays is a sad day for rahman fans
this reminds me of tat song
Guys pls give it a break..Its so disgusting wen someone in d name of a
fan questions Rahman's capabilities..If u dint like it put it in a way tat
doesn't hurt fans like me ok..say u feel it s like tat and not general
  statements like d above ones..

  6.My take on ATM!!
Finally, for me ATM is just a fabulous album..its bin quite
sometime tat I ve liked an entire album but ATM has made me feel it..Its
like yuvi 6 sixers for me..wow valayapathi, merlin menroa, ella pugazhum just
bowled me over..According to me this album is well above Godfather and can
  equally place it near shivaji..

We all know RahulDravid is a technically brilliant batsman,
occasionally he plays a dhoni kind of innings according to d NEED OF D
HOUR,does tat by any way question Dravid's technical brilliance??its very
similar with our boss too..V know his brilliance, occasionally movies like
this shows our boss' versatility..so plsss don't make absurd remarks
based on ur opinions in public forums like this..Enjoy ATM guys and lets
  keep waiting for Jodha

  Stylish Stylish Stylish

The way the song begins is too sexy. LOVE IT!

Notice that there are *NO* percussion in this song. Just the
 chiming sounds
with bass guitar does the trick for the song. That's ARR for you
 again

Amazing additional programming. High-tech sounds embellish the song

Casual rendition by male singer and female voice getting quite
 squeaky..
This balance has worked out great in the song

Mesmerizing male and female alaaps. A

  complex song to execute.

  *Valayapatti*

  Brilliance of ARR

Check out different layers in the song. All unique but very tough
 to compose

Raaga and corresponding alaap. Just magnificient! Come on, could
 anyone
merge both folk and carnatic genre?? Only ARR can handle it so
professionally. Result: A magnificient song like this

Use of nathaswaram.. ARR makes even that instrument sound so
 pleasant to
  hear.

The connection between both charanam and pallavi is too good. Folk +
carnatic + percussion alaap (dheem thanaku dheem)

Use of bass guitar and making it play all along when the raaga
 alaap is
  rendered. This is vintage ARR.

Use of Naresh and madhumitha is commendable

  *Kelamal*

  Brilliance of ARR

Only ARR can handle melodies like munbae vaa, kaatril(from GF) and
 a song
like this.. All are melodies but fall info different percussion
 genre. Just
  awesome.

Ketu rasitha padal ondrai bit is amazing and mesmerizing. An
 alternate
version of it in the middle of the song is just scintillating

Singer selection has again worked out beautifully for ARR.

The song decorated by various versions of chiming sounds

Kokilam Kokilam bit is very much hummable.

A simple percussion handled so professionally to suit a melody like
 this

  *Maduraiku*

  Brilliance of ARR

  Again, the instrument

Heat of the beat, what's the big deal? even bol sajni from DSKR resembled to
Ghanan Ghanan.. all u have is 52 drums out of which sounds have to arise..
when we start prick on nano level things it becomes unfair.. infact, if not
a significant difference between yodha theme and JA bit, there is definitely
a percussion-usage difference. yodha was synthesized but JA bit gives an
archaic feel. that's all.

  Down music lane

  P.K. AJITH KUMAR

Veteran composer V. Dakshinamoorthy’s hallmark is the classic touch
he added to all his evergreen songs.

 Photo: S. Ramesh Kurup

Living legend: V. Dakshinamoorthy.

When P. Leela, who was supposed to sing a lullaby for the 1960 film,
‘Seetha,’ failed to turn up, music director V. Dakshinamoorthy decided to
introduce a new voice to Malayalam film music. Her name was P. Susheela, but
she nearly gave up on that song. “I can’t sing this song, the pronunciation is
difficult,” she told the composer. He didn’t pay heed to her.

The song was ‘Pattu padiyurakkam njan…,’ which remains a popular lullaby in
Malayalam cinema, nearly five decades on. Making Susheela’s golden voice heard
in Malayalam is one of the many contributions of Dakshinamoorthy.

“I had heard Susheela sing some Tamil songs and was impressed by her voice
and rendering; I wanted her to sing that song in ‘Seetha,’ but she had a
problem with the Malayalam letter ‘na.’ She just couldn’t get it right. I told
her that she should touch her teeth with the tip of her tongue. She got it
right finally, and we recorded the song the following day,” says
Dakshinamoorthy, who was in Kozhikode recently for a Carnatic vocal recital at
the Navaratri festival.

  Full of anecdotes

He may be 88, but he can still regale you with many such anecdotes. “It is
the first tune that comes to my mind as I go through the lyrics of a song that
I retain in the final composition; first impression is the best impression
after all. And usually, the producer and the director agree with my choice too.
But when I composed ‘Kakkakuyile cholloo…,’ for the film ‘Bharthavu,’ the
producer T.E. Vasudevan wasn’t happy with it and there was no consensus. So I
composed another tune and it was decided that we should vote as they were five
of us at that time. My original tune won by a huge margin,” he chuckles.

This living legend in Malayalam film music says he never wanted to impose
music on the lyrics. “What I did was just apply music lightly on the lines.”
When he did that, we got immortal songs. He took a two-decade break after
composing ‘Vathil pazhuthilooden…’ (‘Idanazhiyil Oru Kalocha’). Recently he
recorded three songs for a film titled ‘Mizhikal Sakshi.’

It was with Sreekumaran Thampi that Dakshinamoorthy worked with in the
highest number of films. They formed one of the most fruitful combinations in
Malayalam film music, like Vayalar-Devarajan and P. Bhaskaran-Baburaj.
“Though I was just 26 when I began associating with Dakshinamoorthy, for
‘Cochin Express,’ I felt comfortable working with him. Our first hit together
was ‘Hrudaya sarassile…’ I would say Dakshinamoorthy was the first composer who
brought pure Carnatic music to Malayalam cinema. He knew precisely how to use
classical music in Malayalam light music,” says Thampi.

If one looks at Dakshinamoorthy’s compositions, Kharaharapriya would seem a
favourite raga. He explains why: “When I found that ‘Uthara swayamvaram…’ was
loved by people, I thought I would as well tune one song in Kharaharapriya in
all my films,” he says with a smile.

The Chennai-based composer, who would be visiting Kerala more often as he is
one of the judges of a classical music talent hunt on television, is surprised
that only a few of his songs are heard in ganamelas. “Maybe because they can’t
sing some of my compositions for K.J. Yesudas, like ‘Kattile pazhmulam…’ I have
seen only Madhu Balakrishnan attempt that song,” says the man who made his
debut in Malayalam cinema, with ‘Nalla Thanka,’ way back in 1950.

Unforgettable - Some of Dakshinamoorthy’s unforgettable melodies:

  ‘Ponveyil manikacha…’ (‘Nrithashala’)
  ‘Swapnangal…’ (‘Kavyamela’)
  ‘Hrudaya sarassile…’ (‘Padunna Puzha’)
  ‘Uthara swayamvaram…’ (‘Danger Buscuit’)
  ‘Kattile pazhmulam…’ (‘Vilakku Vangiya Veena’)
  ‘Shranthamambaram…’ (‘Abhayam’)
  ‘En mandahasam…’ (‘Udayam’)

Dude ! both Minnale Fanaa are his songs. Why HT did not clarify properly ?
The interview part is good. Thanks for this. I also agree to others views, it
is very silly to force ARR to give artificial poses like actors models. :(
ARR must not oblige to such not-so-good expressions. He can very well say no to
these things. If needed they can take some natural poses that suits the
situation. I think close associates friends of ARR must suggest this to him
soon and prevent in future. He should refuse to such poses. Moreover for a most
regarded MD these things may trigger comments by critics masses later, asking
him why he is allowing so ? Hope ARR can consider this strictly.

A.R.Rahman in a Lollywood flick

Who doesn't know the famous composer A.R. Rahman? Yes, he is the one
who rendered music for the best of Bollywood movies. Whether the film
makes business or not, his songs are sure to create waves all over
the world. Nah! We don't intend to bore you with stuff that you
already know. Our actor/producer Humayun Saeed has hooked A.R. Rahman
for his upcoming movie. The title of the film is still under
consideration but the musical score is all set to fit in the movie.
Great news for all the music lovers who want to see the Lollywood
music flourish just as the pop music. Humayun Saeed has recently
returned from Norway after selecting the locations of shooting and
plans to finalise the cast soon. After the turnover of Khuda Ke Liye,
Humayun Saeed is very optimistic about his movie and he ensures that
his movie will compel a lot of people to take their families to the
theatres. It's time to revive the culture of cinema in our country.
Nice thoughts Humayun!

Take care.

2007-10-28 Thread Thulasi Ram
this is what director bharathan had to say about remix in ATM

http://i23.tinypic.com/scyg44.jpg

transcript:

ARR has given six songs for the movie.
for a plot in the movie, myself, vijay and rahman were discussing that we
need a song similar to 'ponmagal vandhal'. when we were speaking about that,
i said it would be apt if we do a remix of that song. Rahman without
thinking otherwise, happily accepted to do the remix, without changing the
lyrics but changed the background score of the song. for this song, we
filled the floors with golden coins. gold sticks will be hanging everywhere
in the song. also, we brought 20 australian female dancers and made them
dance for this song.

Just a belief and hope it's not true.

But Kamal usually goes for Raja's music for Rajkamal movies.

I don't know when it all really started. There's a less possibility for them
to have had any differences. Perhaps, due to his friendship with Ilayaraja
he tries to avoid ARR as much as possible.

I sometimes wonder why does not he go for Yuvan at least. Yuvan / Harris
would have been a better choice for Dhasavatharam.
