Hi Rawat,

 What was happening on screen?

Both of these are picturised brilliantly by Mani Ratnam
Udal Mannkukku is picturised on Mohanlal. It is actually the shooting of
a period film. Mohanlal comes as a warrior and fights a lot of sowrdsmen,
and rescues the girl (if i'm not wrong!).

Unnodu Naan irundha picturization is a masterpiece! !!! I absolutely
love it, and I've watched that part so many times Prakash Raj comes and
meets Tabu and tells his love... The mild lighting, the camera revolving
from the top, the base voiced Unnodu naan irundha in the background..
everything is perfect!!! wow i'm getting goosepimples even as I type
this!! All thanks to Mani Ratnam!!!

You can watch it here: http://youtube. com/watch?

(Unnodu naan irundha starts after about 2 minutes)

  What exactly are Iruvar's Udal_Mannukku_ Uyir Unnodu_Nan_
 Irundha?
Not songs by any stretch of the word. Some recitation or just dialogs?

 What was happening on screen?

ARR's albums normally don't have dialogs.

Already declared a superhit in India, Abbas Tyrewala's directorial debut Jaane

Released on July 4, Jaane Tu... Ya Janne Na had opened with a 100 percent

steady since then. Also starring Genelia D'Souza and a host of other

BRILLIANT - just brilliant! To derive inspiration from something as
prosaic as a moustache is a hallmark of a true poet indeed. I never
understood the meaning behind those lyrics till now. It's amazing how
VM straddles folk, classical, and contemporary ideas so well. No
wonder his collaboration with a similarly talented Rahman is a
perennial blockbuster!

Thanks Vithur, once again.

For the film Kizhakku Cheemayile, we had been to a village in

for a
song. We sat together to have breakfast. IN front of me, Actor
Napolen and
Vijaykumar were seated. Both were sitting with big moustaches. I
asked , as
to who are they in the movie ?. They are brother-in-laws. Radhika's
brother
is Vijayakumar, and husband is Napolean. The brother cries, when he
parts
away with his sister after marriage. The sister cries, bearing the
pain of
seperation. The cart is moving in the outskirts of the city. A song
has to
be written in that situation. When I was seeing both of these
actors, I
developed a desire seeing their moustaches. I asked the Director,
as to who
is the good man , and who is the bad man among the two.
Vijayakumar, brother
was a good man, and Napolean, husband would turn bad in the later
part of
the story. I started analysing their moustaches, and noticed that
Vijayakumar 's mush was a little peace loving one, and Napolean 's
was one
 which was desirous of violence.

This mush was the roots for that song Kaatalan Kaatu Vazhi ,
Kallipatti
pora vazhi . In that song, there would be a portion, as if sung by
Radhika
 ( the sister )

Anil val meesai konda annan unnai vitttu; puli vaal meesai konda
 purushanoda poi varuvaaa

Meaning :- I am leaving the company of my brother, who has got a
mush like a
squirril, and going with my husband, who has got a mush like that
of a
tiger. In this, squirril is vegetarian, and tiger means non- veg.
Squirril
's tail is a safe one, whereas the tail of the tiger is a dangerous
one.
Thus, leaving the safe company of brother, and going to the future
dangerous
company of the husband was portrayed in those lyrics, and the
inspiration
for the same was the moustache.

Oh. Moustache. I thank you for giving me the impetus to write those
lyrics.

Re: [arr] Next ARR release will be 3 months at the earliest

2008-07-17 Thread avyayan
Actually this would be a merciful gap - I am praying for a little
more time! I forget when we last had 24 Rahman melodies to soak in a
7 month period. And as is wont in such a situation, a few underrated,
less-heard tunes will get forgotten until someone picks it up again a
few years later for all of us to realize what a gem we had missed.
Ada being a prime candidate - it's almost criminal how such a
stunningly crafted album is being given short shrift in the media,
but more so by us in this group.

So, yes I want these 3-4 months to live and breathe this year's
bumper crop, let those glorious tunes saturate every pore. Here's a
survival guide:

1. Pick 2 melodies for the week; listen them on repeat until you know
every turn, nuance and riff.

2. Rate, re-rate and finally unrate, 'cos you know each is in a class
of its own. My rating inevitably falls into three categories: Love It
Too Much, Love It A Lot, and Just Love It.

3. Listen to his songs from a random year in the 90s - then shake
your head in amazement how they still sound as fresh as this year's
creations.

4. Revel in the bliss of living in his time.

By then, at least one of the expected scores will be out, and
everything will be back to normal.

Re: [arr] The Loudness War

2008-07-17 Thread Pradeepan R
Thineshan, Thanks for sharing this info with us.
and as you requested, maybe Gops Vijay can let ARR be aware of this
problem..

I see that in Guri - Ay Hairathe - when HariHaran reaches high pitch at
around 02:55, the Bass Violin/Cello/
causes distortion. this happens in Car Stereo as well as Home Stereo..
This happens with Audio CD (Sony BMG)
Could this be because of similar issue ?

On Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 4:00 PM, Thineshan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hey guys, this is about a problem that has been haunting audiophiles
 in the modern age.

I am sure you all have atleast one pyramid CD of Rahmans. Put this in
and listen to the songs, now find the same songs from another
distributor (alai oosai, ayngaran), you will notice that the volume is
noticeable higher. This is because of the loudness war. Distributors
nowadays are increasing their volume levels to sound better, when
what is at stake is audio dynamics. Some of you might be wondering why
this might be a problem (just reduce the volume and its all fine).
However, what happens is, there is a maximum volume level that a CD
can accept (this is called a loudness ceiling). basically u cannot
increase the volume higher than this level, so what distributors do is
increase the parts that are not at their maximum. The end result? We
get tracks that have a constant volume (static) without any dynamics.
What ARR might have initially planned to sound soft and subtle now
sounds loud. This causes distortion and no matter how much you reduce
the volume on your speakers to match lets say the volume levels of a
pyramid CD, that distrotion is still there because the original has
 been altered.

This was not that noticeable till we heard mayilirage (what a track
that was!), but because ARR designed that track with very very high
dynamics especially with the bass tabla, when audio distributors
increased the volume, those sounds that were already at their maximum
now sound distorted and so the complaints by many people about its
quality. Let me tell you all something, ARR made no mistake with its
quality, its all distributors fault. I also noticed the same problem
with guru (tamil) version -- aaruyire around 4 25 when she goes nee
ilatha iravoa. The hindi version (Sony BMG) was CRYSTAL clear, but
the same song at the same places had distortions in tamil (Ayngaran).

For the time being, lets contribute to this discussion about which
distributor has the better quality. IMO, pyramid tops them all! Let me
know what you all think. Remmeber dont just look at volume levels, but
observe the dynamics. low volume doesnt necessarily mean better. You
can put ur tracks into programs like goldwave and observe the
waveform. I have done this with some tracks and pyramid scores! but
unfortunately i only have pyramid and ayngaran.

This problem must be stopped now otherwise we will hear damaged music
like mayilirage and aaruyirae (fortunately its not evident like in
these tracks). This is a form of harrasment. I know there is are sound
engineers and audiophiles in this group who know WAY more than me and
have been aware of this from day one. I just wanted to share something
that I thought concerns all of us who love quality damage-free music.
I request people like Gopal and Vijay to look into this matter and
inform ARR so that he is aware of this(i am sure he is) and he advises
 the distributors regarding the same.

[arr] Taal Se Taal intro........one of the best ever?

2008-07-17 Thread Chord
Taal Se Taal Mila from Taal is one of my all time favorite songs,
period. What I find most captivating is how the song begins and
evolves bit by bit..first the water droplets, then the soft
Taranas by Sukhwinder the dholak, ghungrus, more droplets, then the
steady, mesmerizing rhythm with full ghungrus and dholak. Heard that
Rahman asked the dholak player to tie ice cream sticks on his hands to
create a certain percussion sound. Alka's singing is extremely
beautiful and never shrill, like she often sounds.

I find that the intro of Taal Se Taal is probably one of the most
brilliant, original, innovative starts to any Hindi film song ever.

TIDBITS ON ARR :) It seems like, when ARR records harmonies, he gives
the pieces two hours in advance to the singers, ask them to practice
well, with what all feelings they get. And then he patiently goes for
the take. His Patience while recording makes every singer feel his/ her

Both these artists have a passion for Sufi music and Rahman worked
well with his famous late Uncle, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab. Surprised
Rahman has not chosen Rahat for one of his own compositions yet. I
think it's only a matter of time. When they do come together, watch
out.

LOVELY! What seemed like a trivial song at first now is one of the
most meaningful I have heard. Do I see the beginnings of
environmental consciousness here? Can this song make youngsters think
twice about buying a bike or car? And growing more trees?

Na Muthukumar has nailed it with this one. Great work!

And thanks for the translation - would never have picked up the mix
of colloquial tamil and English otherwise.

PS. But I love Coke Zero :(

Hi All,

Another ARR Album has released and we see a lot of copy/inspiration allegations.

Arguing with these people is like fighting with a pig in the mud. After a while
u will realize that while u r getting dirty, the pig is actually enjoying it.

They are out there in the mud.
They are calling u for a fight.
They will hurt your ego.
They will exploit your love for ARR.
They will do anything to get you into the mud and fight with them.

Because,
They want to have fun.

Better stay away.

  In Vairamuthu Neram today,

  He speaks,

For the film Kizhakku Cheemayile, we had been to a village in
 interior
parts of Tamil Nadu. Dir Bharathiraaja requested me to write lyrics
 for a
song. We sat together to have breakfast. IN front of me, Actor
 Napolen and
Vijaykumar were seated. Both were sitting with big moustaches. I
 asked , as
to who are they in the movie ?. They are brother-in-laws. Radhika's
 brother
is Vijayakumar, and husband is Napolean. The brother cries, when he
 parts
away with his sister after marriage. The sister cries, bearing the
 pain of
seperation. The cart is moving in the outskirts of the city. A song
 has to
be written in that situation. When I was seeing both of these
 actors, I
developed a desire seeing their moustaches. I asked the Director,
 as to who
is the good man , and who is the bad man among the two.
 Vijayakumar, brother
was a good man, and Napolean, husband would turn bad in the later
 part of
the story. I started analysing their moustaches, and noticed that
Vijayakumar 's mush was a little peace loving one, and Napolean 's
 was one
  which was desirous of violence.

This mush was the roots for that song Kaatalan Kaatu Vazhi ,
 Kallipatti
pora vazhi . In that song, there would be a portion, as if sung by
 Radhika
  ( the sister )

Anil val meesai konda annan unnai vitttu; puli vaal meesai konda
  purushanoda poi varuvaaa

Meaning :- I am leaving the company of my brother, who has got a
 mush like a
squirril, and going with my husband, who has got a mush like that
 of a
tiger. In this, squirril is vegetarian, and tiger means non- veg.
 Squirril
's tail is a safe one, whereas the tail of the tiger is a dangerous
 one.
Thus, leaving the safe company of brother, and going to the future
 dangerous
company of the husband was portrayed in those lyrics, and the
 inspiration
for the same was the moustache.

Oh. Moustache. I thank you for giving me the impetus to write those
 lyrics.

2008-07-17 Thread Kalimuthu
http://entertainment.oneindia.in/tamil/exclusive/2008/rehman-karunanidhi-music-school-170708.html

Music Director AR Rehman called on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Official sources here described the meeting held at the Chief Minister's
Gopalapuram Residence, as a courtesy call. However, sources close to Rehman
said the discussions centered on the music school and university being
established by him in Chennai.

At present, the school is functioning in a temporary building. By the end of
this year this school will be shifted to its newly built Meenambakkam
campus. In this meet, it is said that Rehman requested the CM to make
possible his presence in the inaugural function and need some help from the
government side to complete the work speedy.

Re: [arr] Taal Se Taal intro........one of the best ever?

2008-07-17 Thread Gomzy
Thats right. And if you have expereinced this in a very good theatre ( not
any of these multiplexes please)
the feeling is completely different. The whole theatre revebrates during the
song. Simply amazing.

On 7/17/08, Chord [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

[arr] Re: The Loudness War

2008-07-17 Thread avyayan
To be absolutely honest, I am noticing this far too often in Rahman's
soundtrack CDs. In Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah it was starkly evident in
the parts where they hit the high ..o-shaehnshah...farma nava. In
Guru, Jaage Hain when the choir hits the crescendo. In JTYJN, Kahin
to had some parts where this distortion was noticeable. In fact the
only album this year where I did NOT notice this was ADA, and maybe
Sakkarakatti (have yet to give this the max quality treatment on my
headphones).

Oh, and all the above examples are in the Indian (i.e., Original Sony/
T-series, UTV music) CDs, not distributors. What annoys me is that
ARR has one of the most sophisticated setups in the world to produce
fantastic and pure sound, but we the listeners have to put up with
such crap cos of commercial short-changing? Maybe that's why Pyramid
went out of business - they cared too much about quality. Sigh...

Here's what KM Musiq should do. Produce pristine-quality SACDs of all
of Rahman's soundtracks to date. It will cost more - but those who
can afford it will buy them for sure. And those who can't now, well,
isn't that a good enough reason to work hard and earn more :)

Thineshan, Thanks for sharing this info with us.
and as you requested, maybe Gops Vijay can let ARR be aware of
this
 problem..

I see that in Guri - Ay Hairathe - when HariHaran reaches high
pitch at
 around 02:55, the Bass Violin/Cello/
causes distortion. this happens in Car Stereo as well as Home
Stereo..
This happens with Audio CD (Sony BMG)
Could this be because of similar issue ?

Hey guys, this is about a problem that has been haunting
audiophiles
  in the modern age.

I am sure you all have atleast one pyramid CD of Rahmans. Put
this in
and listen to the songs, now find the same songs from another
distributor (alai oosai, ayngaran), you will notice that the
volume is
noticeable higher. This is because of the loudness war.
Distributors
nowadays are increasing their volume levels to sound better,
when
what is at stake is audio dynamics. Some of you might be
wondering why
this might be a problem (just reduce the volume and its all fine).
However, what happens is, there is a maximum volume level that a
CD
can accept (this is called a loudness ceiling). basically u cannot
increase the volume higher than this level, so what distributors
do is
increase the parts that are not at their maximum. The end result?
We
get tracks that have a constant volume (static) without any
dynamics.
What ARR might have initially planned to sound soft and subtle now
sounds loud. This causes distortion and no matter how much you
reduce
the volume on your speakers to match lets say the volume levels
of a
pyramid CD, that distrotion is still there because the original
has
  been altered.

This was not that noticeable till we heard mayilirage (what a
track
that was!), but because ARR designed that track with very very
high
dynamics especially with the bass tabla, when audio distributors
increased the volume, those sounds that were already at their
maximum
now sound distorted and so the complaints by many people about its
quality. Let me tell you all something, ARR made no mistake with
its
quality, its all distributors fault. I also noticed the same
problem
with guru (tamil) version -- aaruyire around 4 25 when she goes
nee
ilatha iravoa. The hindi version (Sony BMG) was CRYSTAL clear,
but
the same song at the same places had distortions in tamil
(Ayngaran).

For the time being, lets contribute to this discussion about which
distributor has the better quality. IMO, pyramid tops them all!
Let me
know what you all think. Remmeber dont just look at volume
levels, but
observe the dynamics. low volume doesnt necessarily mean better.
You
can put ur tracks into programs like goldwave and observe the
waveform. I have done this with some tracks and pyramid scores!
but
unfortunately i only have pyramid and ayngaran.

This problem must be stopped now otherwise we will hear damaged
music
like mayilirage and aaruyirae (fortunately its not evident like in
these tracks). This is a form of harrasment. I know there is are
sound
engineers and audiophiles in this group who know WAY more than me
and
have been aware of this from day one. I just wanted to share
something
that I thought concerns all of us who love quality damage-free
music.
I request people like Gopal and Vijay to look into this matter and
inform ARR so that he is aware of this(i am sure he is) and he
advises
  the distributors regarding the same.

bred musician who has jammed with some of the biggest names in the
industry has completed what he calls a `dream project': A classical
contemporary band called `Karnatrix' and a new album named `Namaste'.
John started off his career with big names, way back in 1985.

Sivamani, A. R. Rahman the Kenyan Jo Joo, who is no more, and John
had formed the band, `Roots,' which rocked Chennai and other Indian
cities for about four years.

That was fun. We gelled as a group. We did our own music, new
compositions. We jammed with numerous artistes like T. V.
Gopalakrishnan and Kadri Gopalnath. Then Dileep (Rahman) got his
first film. He told us that he would give it a try, earn some good
money and be back. But after the first film there was no coming back
for him. By then Sivamani and his drums had become very popular and
the group had to be wound up. We still keep in touch and sometimes
even think of regrouping, reminisces John.

Settling down in Chennaithrew up a slew of opportunities for John.
But before all this happened he had to virtually slug it out. I gave
up studies after my pre-degree at St. Albert's College, Kochi. Along
with this went hockey, even after being selected to play for the
State. I began learning the guitar from Emil Issacs at Kalabhavan. In
those early days I played for many bands, like `The Hijackers,'
before we formed `Resistance.' This group performed live across the
country for about six years. My decision to choose music as a career
naturally stunned my family. I realised I had to fend for myself. I
went to join Taranga Nisari School of Music at Thiruvananthapuram but
ended up teaching there. That was a turning point.

The then principal of this music school was Roger D. Jhanke a reputed
US-based pianist. It was he who trained me in Western classical
music. He was there for nearly three years and when he left I did
too. For a year John worked as an instructor at Sainik School,
before deciding to seek his destiny in Chennai.

It was during those few years in Thiruvananthapuram that John met
Supreetha, his student and later life-partner. He has a 22-year-old
son Siddharth who is studying animation.

He came into contact with the film industry while at
Thiruvananthapuram. That happened through M. G. Radhakrishnan. He
taught me the basics of Carnatic music. We used to have heated
arguments on the different genres of music. I could never agree that
Indian classical music was more comprehensive than any other. It was
a view that I had to alter later. The first film that I worked in was
Priyadarshan's `Poochakku Oru Mukoothi.'

But his Chennai sojourn opened up new vistas. `Roots' was the
certainly the launch pad. Through this band John was soon finding
himself in the company of illustrious musicians. One show that still
remains etched in memory is the one at the IIT campus in Chennai with
the `Epidemics.' I had the fortune to share the stage with violin
maestro L. Shankar, the redoubtable Zakir Hussian and the brilliant
Vikoo Vinayakram. It was a mind-boggling show. We went on to do a
benefit concert and even recorded a album with the `Epidemics' that
somehow was not released.

That disappointment was forgotten when John had two albums
released. The first one was with the Chennai-based rock band `Sign
of IV.' The other one, in which I was the co-producer, was titled
`Four/Four.' I still maintain that the former remains one of the best
rock albums to have been produced here. He recorded with L.
Subramaniam, co-founded the Carnatic fusion band `Brahmma' along with
Ganesh and Kumaresh, recording albums and performing live concerts;
performed with the mridangam master Karaikudi Mani in Hyderabad and
Chennai and joined Kanjira exponent Selvaganesh and German
saxophonist Rainer Putsch at a unique show at the Music
Academy. Another memorable show was again at the hallowed Music
Academy where we had a fusion concert with Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna,
Vikkoo Vinayakaram, Rainer Putsch, T. H. Subash Chandran, Joel
Almeida.

In 2000 John, nspired by the struggle of the survivors of the Bhopal
disaster, founded a rock group `The Banned.' They organised a live
show that we called `No More Bhopal' for an audience of over 5,000
students at IIT, Chennai. The show was featured on Channel V and we
also went on to release the album titled `No More Bhopal.'

By this time John was also evolving as a musician. From the hard rock
guitarist who believed that his music was the best, he was gradually
realising the immense possibilities of Indian classical music. Now,
after all these years, he began to understand how true M. G.
Radhakrishnan was in those long debates.

John co-founded `Yakshas,'

[arr] Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai song to be added from tomorrow

A new song added in Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, July 17, 2008 - 17:31 IST

Everyone has been singing praises and talking about Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane
Na. Over two weeks since its release, the film has gathered worldwide
fame and adulation. Imran and Genelia have become stars overnight.
Looking at the positive response from the audiences, Aamir Khan and
Abbas Tyrewala have now given the audiences another reason to watch
the film again.

Few days back, Aamir had put up a debate on his blog,
www.aamirkhan.com, asking his fans whether he should or should not add
the female version of the track, 'Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai' sung by Runa
picturised on Genelia Dsouza in the film. Apparently, Aamir and Abbas
felt that the song should be deleted in order to match up with the
pace of the film. Hence, it was not a part of the film when Jaane Tu…
released on July 4. Now, since Aamir got feedback from a number of
people that they missed this song in the film, he has decided to add
it to the film.

The female version of 'Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai' will now be added to the
film from this Friday (July 18) and will run for a week. Moreover,
depending upon the response they get for it, Aamir and Abbas will
decide if the song should remain in the film or not.

Now is that a good enough reason to watch the film again or what?

Chord I completely agree with you. It is as if you are describing my
feelings about the song. Taal se taal is my most favorite ARR song and
exactly as you described the start-up is out of the world. Especially
it is heaven when it fully enters to the full mode with all dholaks
etc. Mindblowing. Last days once when I played it in my car, my
Tunisian friend said it is the best he heard from me till now.
Because of the rain effects (water droplets in the beginning and then
the rythm) I always love to play it when it is raining. Salute to our
boss for creating a masterpiece like this.

steady, mesmerizing rhythm with full ghungrus and dholak. Heard that
Rahman asked the dholak player to tie ice cream sticks on his hands to
create a certain percussion sound. Alka's singing is extremely
beautiful and never shrill, like she often sounds.

I find that the intro of Taal Se Taal is probably one of the most
brilliant, original, innovative starts to any Hindi film song ever.

you have observed over the years?
*There's a revolution on in the music scenario now. It can be termed as
'revolution', but there is no music in it. Everything is done by the
machines, it's no more about creative composing. The latest music has too
much of techno sounds and less of music. For me, it's no longer music, it'
just sound. And, the exposure this music is so much, that there is hardly
any difference between a flop song and a hit song. It is all about pumping
in a song and turning it into a hit by playing it 100 times on a radio
station or on TV.

Revolution in the industry was brought by R D Burman, A R Rahman. But after
Rahman's sound experiments with machines, everyone started working on sound.
That's why everything we hear today sounds very similar to our ears.

*You have been through all the phases of this revolution. Which of these
scenarios was good for you?
*I am no one to judge what was good and bad. As far as my comfort level is
concerned, I am very comfortable with my work. I do not measure myself with
others or the growth of the music industry. I always compare myself on how
much I have grown in the past years. I am paying a lot more income tax than
what I did in my past (laughs). Now, I earn a lot, and I am very content
with the kind of work I have done and I am doing.

*Why didn't you try your hand at composing?
*I am already into composing for my albums. As for composing for films, I do
not have the temperament that's needed for the job. Hats off to the music
directors who have the patience to make music for others. I have seen the
best being rejected. I don't have that much of patience and I am satisfied
composing for my albums. Actually, it needs a lot of time to make music, and
now I am very busy with my stage shows, reality shows and playback singing.

*Have these television reality shows given a lot of impetus to artistes who
participate in them?
*Has it only brought business and recognition to the participating artistes?
We are the face of the shows. The reality show is being watched because
artistes like us are a part of it. People do not want to see just the
contestants that the show brings on stage. They want to hear our comments on
the contestants. If it wasn't for the specialist nature of our comments, the
director of the show could have invited some guru or a panditji from
Allahabad and installed them as judges in our places.

*
One sees you often arguing vehemently with the other judges on these shows.
Is it for real or are these just gimmicks?
*When it is a reality show, people want to see things for real. There are
many shows that plan out such things but, no one can say that about me. I
think I started this trend - I cry, I pull Alka Yagnik's leg, I get angry;
everything is natural and no one guides me to do that. Apart from that, the
editing also plays a very important role here. Earlier, such things were
edited out and the singing was more in focus. But now, the show wants more
of such controversy.

*Don't you think there has been a surfeit of talent hunt shows on TV?
*Yes, there has been a surfeit of such shows. Hence, today we see Ek se
badhkar ek and Superstar doing equally well. We had a lot of shows that got
in new talent, but these shows are doing good because of their uniqueness.
It's all about different formats now, it's no more about mere talent hunts.

*You have cut many albums. Do you think artistes should get a better share
in the royalties?
*We can't help that, that's the scenario in India. Here, people don't
respect an artiste's work. Here, the artistes work for others. We don't work
for ourselves. Outside India, artiste compose one album and the next three
generations do not have to earn their living. Whereas, in India, people are
capable of topping the charts, but they work for others and earn very little
out of their work.

*Is the issue not worth fighting for?
*We had taken a stand long ago. We wanted our next generation to gain from
it. Now, I have made my career and it is not going to affect singers like
us.

Unfortunately, the singers were never united.

*Are you doing anything for the Bengali music industry?
*I am never connected with that. I always wanted to sing for

On the reuqest of hundreds of people on Aamir Khan's blog, they have
decided to add the Jaane Tu.. song to the film. As the link says about
70% people suggested to add the song. I am really really really happy,
as Jaane Tu.. (Runa version) is my most favorite song from the album
and I was highly disappointed to not to find it in the film. Kudos to
Aamir for considering fans for this decision.

As i mentioned before i am a very hard and loyal fan of ARR. I spend
close to an hour or two reading the articles about ARR, I also go

college, and whenever our ARR casettes hit the shop, i went so early
in the morning to grab the first copy and kept on listening it. I
used keep my sound system volume so high, so that the entire street
can hear our thalaivar songs. Till i came to US, i had a big
collection of all his album casettes, and after coming here i rely on
 the online music.

I can go on and on about this, but no one can question my loyality
towards ARR, i guess that i dont need to prove anyone regarding this.

All i asked was the opinion of you guys about the comparison of those
songs and i think my post also clearly states that. I never made a
conclusion and i just wanted to make sure the said comment was false
by all means. I listened to both the songs around 10 to 15 times
 before posting that message.

I dont know that i check my emails that often, but i do check this
yahoo group so many times every day.

As soon as i read or hear any film or album that associates with ARR,
i feel so excited and happy and i dont have the right words to
 express those.

Even my 6 yr old son hears ARR's music everyday along with me. He
loves Taxi Taxi as of now, before he loved kabhi kabhi and jaane tu

are conducting Amazing Kids Awards, so they want to give out awards
who sang for A R Rahman. The age is between 4 - 14 years and the last

Hope the moderators Gopal / Vijay / Vithur or Rahmaniac could shed some
light on this. Can you please tell me who are the Child Artist who
worked for A R Rahman. The channel people think that the children who
got a chance to work with Rahman will be an absolute talent . So that
they want to give out the awards to them.

Hope someone could help me on this. Looking forward for your reply.

[arr] Vairamuthu Neram - July 17, 2008

2008-07-17 Thread Vithur
In Vairamuthu Neram today,

Maniratnam asked Rahman to set the tune of the love song ( Pudhu vellai
Mazhai from ROJA ) to be like that of in Kashmir, and wanted the tune of the
song also to be chilling. Neither me nor A.R. Rahman could understand that.
How can the tune become chilling ?. Maniratnam wanted it to be like , a
chilling type, even when the song is heard. Nothing could be understood.
After hearing to many tunes, finally, he composed a tune in Kanada raga.
That is Pudhu Vellai Mazhai song tune. When you hear the tune itself, it
would be like that of a chilling nature. The sweeetness of the tune itself
is like that. The uniqueness of the tune is the same. Maniratnam wanted me
to write lyrics which will chill out . Initially, I wrote the lyrics like ,

Idhu Kashmirama, Ingu Kargalama. Yendhan Kovil Pura, indha kulir
thangumaaa. The song was considered to be excellent. Rahman liked it, and
Maniratnam also praised it. After everyone praised, Maniratnam told, that
for this tune, the lyrics cannot become more better. But, lets not have it
like this. I asked, Why ?.

Maniratnam replied, I am going to show Kashmir on the screen. Why are you
also reinstating on Kashmir by way of the lyrics. ?. Suppose, I lose the
opportunity to shoot the scenes in Kashmir, and take it in Ooty, then wont
it be a disgrace if the lyrics state that its Kashmir ? . Hence, Pls write
it in such a manner, that the lyrics are written in such a way, that no one
knows, where its is shot from. I got mesmerised, when I wrote the lyrics
for the song, Ilaya Nila poyigirudhu ( Illaarayaja 's composition ) . I
have wondered myself, if Tamil Language could be handled in such a fashion.
Maniratnam wanted such a song for this situation.

Then came, Pudhu vellai Mazhai Ingu poyigindradhu... After the song was
picturised, could I realise, the justification behind Maniratnam asking me
for such lyrics.

For a film by name Pudiya Mugam, Dir Suresh Menon was starting towards Sri
Lanka. He wanted a song immediately to Rahman. A. R. Rahman told him, to go
to Lanka, and and that he would compose it and send it to him. Suresh Menon
was telling that if the song wasnt there, there would be no shooting. Then,
Rahman looked at me, and asked me if I had some song in my store. I told
him, yes... I have been waiting for 12 years with the lyrics of a song.
I have been waiting for this opportunity. I gave the lyrics immediately, and
within 2 hrs, Rahman composed the music for the lyrics. , and by the next
day, it was sent to Sri Lanka. That song is Kannukku Mai Azagu .

POGO is conducting an awards for best child playback singers [ Amazing Kids
Awards ] . SO I got a call from Pogo today through my blog, whether any
child artist worked for Rahman recently so that they can give out this award
to that kid.

Any Kid worked recently ? I think the last child artist was

*Master Vignesh: *Yeh Tara Woh Tara - Swades

Correct me If I am wrong. In tamil, is ther any child artist ?

Some songs I can think of with child voices:
- Kuchi Kuchi Rakkamma from Bombay
- Kuch Bhi na Socha from Bombay
- Chor Chor from Chor Chor
- Chikku Bukku Railae from Gentleman
- chorus in Ek Tu Hi Bharosa from Pukaar
- chorus in Gurus of Peace from Vande Mataram
- Aditya Narayan from Rangeela Re from Rangeela
- Master Vignesh, Baby Pooja and chorus from Yeh Tara Woh Tara in Swades

I'm sure I'm missing many others- especially form non-Hindi films.

Taal Se Taal Mila from Taal is one of my all time favorite songs,

evolves bit by bit..first the water droplets, then the soft
Taranas by Sukhwinder the dholak, ghungrus, more droplets, then the
steady, mesmerizing rhythm with full ghungrus and dholak. Heard that
Rahman asked the dholak player to tie ice cream sticks on his hands to
create a certain percussion sound. Alka's singing is extremely
beautiful and never shrill, like she often sounds.

I find that the intro of Taal Se Taal is probably one of the most
brilliant, original, innovative starts to any Hindi film song ever.

*In conversation with Radioandmusic.com's Shabana Ali, Abhijeet shares
insights from his musical journey over the years.*

 *Excerpts:*

*You have been in the industry for a long time. What are the changes that
you have observed over the years?
*There's a revolution on in the music scenario now. It can be termed as
'revolution', but there is no music in it. Everything is done by the
machines, it's no more about creative composing. The latest music has too
much of techno sounds and less of music. For me, it's no longer music, it'
just sound. And, the exposure this music is so much, that there is hardly
any difference between a flop song and a hit song. It is all about pumping
in a song and turning it into a hit by playing it 100 times on a radio
 station or on TV.

Revolution in the industry was brought by R D Burman, A R Rahman. But
after Rahman's sound experiments with machines, everyone started working on
sound. That's why everything we hear today sounds very similar to our ears.

*You have been through all the phases of this revolution. Which of these
 scenarios was good for you?
*I am no one to judge what was good and bad. As far as my comfort level
is concerned, I am very comfortable with my work. I do not measure myself
with others or the growth of the music industry. I always compare myself on
how much I have grown in the past years. I am paying a lot more income tax
than what I did in my past (laughs). Now, I earn a lot, and I am very
content with the kind of work I have done and I am doing.

*Why didn't you try your hand at composing?
*I am already into composing for my albums. As for composing for films, I
do not have the temperament that's needed for the job. Hats off to the music
directors who have the patience to make music for others. I have seen the
best being rejected. I don't have that much of patience and I am satisfied
composing for my albums. Actually, it needs a lot of time to make music, and
now I am very busy with my stage shows, reality shows and playback singing.

*Have these television reality shows given a lot of impetus to artistes
 who participate in them?
*Has it only brought business and recognition to the participating
artistes? We are the face of the shows. The reality show is being watched
because artistes like us are a part of it. People do not want to see just
the contestants that the show brings on stage. They want to hear our
comments on the contestants. If it wasn't for the specialist nature of our
comments, the director of the show could have invited some guru or a
panditji from Allahabad and installed them as judges in our places.

 *
One sees you often arguing vehemently with the other judges on these
shows. Is it for real or are these just gimmicks?
*When it is a reality show, people want to see things for real. There are
many shows that plan out such things but, no one can say that about me. I
 think I started this trend - I cry, I pull Alka Yagnik's leg, I get angry;
everything is natural and no one guides me to do that.

Do you think artistes should get a better
 share in the royalties?
*We can't help that, that's the scenario in India. Here, people don't
respect an artiste's work. Here, the artistes work for others. We don't work
for ourselves. Outside India, artiste compose one album and the next three
generations do not have to earn their living.

The kids who were part of Yeh Tara Woh Tara deserve it. Just yesterday I
was hearing this song and was thinking about the cuteness of children's
 voices. :o)

Some songs I can think of with child voices:
 - Kuchi Kuchi Rakkamma from Bombay
 - Kuch Bhi na Socha from Bombay
 - Chor Chor from Chor Chor
 - Chikku Bukku Railae from Gentleman
 - chorus in Ek Tu Hi Bharosa from Pukaar
 - chorus in Gurus of Peace from Vande Mataram
 - Aditya Narayan from Rangeela Re from Rangeela
 - Master Vignesh, Baby Pooja and chorus from Yeh Tara Woh Tara in Swades

I'm sure I'm missing many others- especially form non-Hindi films.

Which song ? what awards ?.

The child artist was G V Prakash kumar, and he has developed into a MD
  himself...

I dont think there are other recognised child voices that ARR uses...
  nowadays...

  Hi Gops/Vijay/Vithur and all Rahmaniacs,

Today I got a call from POGO TV. One Mr Duo called me and inquired for
 the
child artist who performed for A R Rahman. Actually, they came across
 the
blog www.rahmaniac.co.nr and called me to inquire this. They are
 conducting
Amazing Kids Awards, so they want to give out awards who sang for A R
Rahman. The age is between 4 - 14 years and the last day to send
 nominations
  is 30th July.

Hope the moderators Gopal / Vijay / Vithur or Rahmaniac could shed some
light on this. Can you please tell me who are the Child Artist who
 worked
for A R Rahman. The channel people think that the children who got a
 chance
to work with Rahman will be an absolute talent . So that they want to
 give
  out the awards to them.

Hope someone could help me on this. Looking forward for your reply.

  Best regards,
  Farzad

2008-07-17 Thread Thulasi Ram
spoilers are always famous in our group and this is a best example of one..

Raman wants everyone to vote for ARR which is totally valid thought and
share for a person in this group. there wasnt any question raised with
respect to this..
