Yeah i was also dejected!...
even there's no booklet.

It is just a CD created to capitalize on the SDM hype.

Those who might not know. Sitarist Ravi Shankar has actually done some
bollywood films, some with songs, dances, melodrama and stuff, some
seriously made.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0788170/

# Gandhi (1982)

# Meera (1979) (as Pandit Ravishankar)

# Godaan (1963)

# Anuradha (1960) ("Sanware Sanware Kahe Mose")

# Kabuliwala (1956)

# Vachan (1955) (lyrics: "Chandamama door ke, pue pakaye bur ke, aap
khaye thali main munne ko de pyali mein")

Though the songs were ok, they weren't divine by any standards and
hundreds of songs of bollywood composers have given thousands of songs
better than his songs in these movies.

Ustad ji and myself are no one to assess who is the greatest composer.
We all have our individual preferences for music. We are discussing here
not the greatness but the award. And the fact is: when Ravishankar ji
has done movies and his movies didn't fetch him oscar, what is the point
in saying that he should have got it? It is ARR who is getting awarded
and getting nominated, though I concede that this is no criteria of
judging the greatest composer.

My favorite Devotional song would be "MAA TUJHE SALAAM" from VM. To
me, devotion to motherland is most valuable and comes first in the

Rightly said.

And when one Indian composer eventually gets his due from the West,
other Indians like Ustad feel uncomfortable with it.

He mentions Ravi Shanker and Vilayat Khan. Probably, he wants only
non-mainstream classical people to get awarded. Does it hint that he
might be considering film composers to be lesser mortals?

ARR is now 100+ album entity. Casting aspersions on 2 seconds of his one
song is reason enough for Ustad ji to undermine ARR's 99+ other albums
and 1000+ other songs. There should be some proportionate representation
of total population versus the surveyed population to make the
statistics convey some meaningful conclusions about the entire
population. Here, the statistics doesn't fit.

"In a rare conversation from the U.S., he says, “Yes, it is a matter of
pride for the Indian film fraternity. It has put Indian film music on
the international scene and Rahman deserves a lot of credit. But it does
not signify that Rahman is the greatest composer for films in India.”
--

I think that is a reasonable statement. ARR himself wouldn't ever call
him the greatest composer. He is humble enough.

But, nobody has declared ARR greatest composer for films in India.

Then, whom is Ustad ji contradicting or confronting or correcting?

So, even though there seems nothing wrong on surface on the above
comments, there is some deep underlying resentment that caused the
statements to come out in the first place.

Millions of people keep on saying billions of statements and carrying
billions of thoughts, but we don't bother to give statements on each of
them. But, we do give our views only on those few of those statements,
that, our heart feels, could be correct.

Let's leave the analysis at this juncture.

Chord.. the sentence

is not sitting right..
IR has reduced but he is pretty much composing even now.
Coming to the point..
Lemme us think this other way around.
"If ARR is not allowed to use any Technology.. will he be a failure?"
My opinion is that ARR will still manage to be a humble legend.

Re: [arr] Re: More sour grapes

2009-02-02 Thread Aakarsh
Hi!

Firstly, i dont think that there is a direct lift there. Probably the raaga is
the same. "Ae Ajnabi" is composed in "Gambheera Naata" and i am not completely
sure if the cited song too is the same raaga.need to play it and see.

Coming to his comments that our yesteryear composers too would have achieved
equal fame, if their work was popularized and also perceived in right
perspective... it is natural for him to feel so, because he is a classical
musician, a veteran and a legend. And having seen it all and done it all in his
generation, naturally he will feel so.

Why him, tomorrrow, when we all grow old, we will will definitely look up to
ARR's work in same way... looking at composers who will emerge out by then. Not
that those new composers will be equally good or bad... but those set of new
composers might click more with the audience  of that time, while we all, in
this group, might still prefer a Zubeidaa or a Dil Se.

Classical musicians know the length and breadth of music (even ARR will agree
to this). and some tinge of criticism will always be there. Why, even I would
prefer a 'Jiya Jale' or a 'Piya Ho' over SDM Soundtrack. Ofcourse, i am happy
that ARR is getting recognition, but then i wish he gets it for morre
classical, serious works. I personally do not like this 'Western' label
attached to his music. Agreed, that it is fusion, and i like the fusion too,
but over long-term, i definitely prrefer Classical, be it Indian or Western
Classical.

And i am sure, even ARR's preference is the same.

Friends, try to understand the state of mind of a classical musician, and take
comments in stride, even if we cannot agree with him. Because they are purists
and highly knowledgeble. Some misgivings will be there, but we cant expect
everryone to be totally perfect. So, chill.

[arr] Re: A.R.Murugadoss to do Ajith's 50th film

2009-02-02 Thread Dinesh
So far all ARM movies had diff MDs. He never did repeated any same MD
at all. So for him to use ARR or Hj is doubtful. But since this is a
Tamil movie, im guessing it should be HJ or YSR. If ARM does a Hindi
film, then he will go to ARR.

A small observation... By God's Grace, Ilayaraja is alive today.

Chord.. the sentence
"..or even Illayaraja etc. had been alive today with.."
is not sitting right..
IR has reduced but he is pretty much composing even now.
Coming to the point..
Lemme us think this other way around.
"If ARR is not allowed to use any Technology..will he be a failure?"
My opinion is that ARR will still manage to be a humble legend.

2009-02-02 Thread sath.murthy

As we all know that they both created a blockbuster in the boxoffice and
the film broke all the previous bollywood records.

Guzarish, Bekha, Kaise all are wonderful songs. Out of 5 , 3 are great.
what more do we want?

What happened to Sakarakatti, that had great songs but flopped in BO.

ARR had and still having more flops in the BO even though the songs were
beautiful, but failed just because of the narration and screenplay by
the directors. Murugadoss did a perfect screenplay that appealed to the
masses.

Yuvaraaj had some mesmerizing numbers by ARR, but. movie flopped,
songs didn't reach the normal people other than ARR fans like us.

I can go on and on with this kind of list.

[arr] If classic composers were around today.........

2009-02-02 Thread Chord
I don't like to compare composers of different times using blanket
statements. The Indian film industry has a rich history of brilliant
composers, each with their own unique strengths and contributions.
ARR is another in a series of brilliant composers. Is he THE best
ever? I can't really answer that. Is he THE best to me? Sure!

What if RD Burman, Madan Mohan, Naushaad, or even Illayaraja etc. had
been alive today with their same talents but with the luxury of sound
technology and computers. Would their music also reach across globally?
Would love to hear your thoughts. As far as I'm concerned, nobody has
EVER combined different genres of world music more beautifully than
our ARR. How does ARR compare to other composers in the past just in
terms of pure melody? Originality?

Please please please do not turn this discussion into a "Illayaraja is
way better than Rahman" or "RD Burman is nothing compared to AR
Rahman" type of warfare. I'm just curious to know your thoughts about
the above.

[arr] Daily email has gone up tremendously

2009-02-02 Thread Jags
Hi fellow ARR fans,

Is it just me or has the number of emails being exchanged through the groups
increased by leaps and bounds. 5-6 years back I used to get 1 email digest
every 2-3 days, infact even before slumdog I think I would probably get
about 2-3 digests per day. Now its like 5-6 digests per day or even more.
Its getting increasingly difficult to read every mail.

I recently started my first job after education and I have a request for
everyone to please make sure you edit the subject line so that it makes it
easier to pick the message one wants to read. While working fulltime I am
not able to devote enough time to read all emails so if we are able to
manage the subject line better atleast I won't miss out on any information.
I hope you understand that I don't mean to disregard anybody's views but in
my attempt to keep track of all emails I have used up a lot of time.

On a different note, I am so happy for ARR and Delhi 6. Not that anyone will
really question ARR's talent, but Delhi 6 came at the right time. After a
plethora of nominations for SDM to reinstate that SDM may or maynot be his
best work (based on some unqualified critics) but he continues to churn out
world class and unique music with every album. You just cannot discount the
fact that no two albums in a broader sense are the same. While with Luck by
Chance I have started to think SEL has become very predictable in their
compositions. You can pretty easily pinpoint what the next line or chord
progression would be. I hope they improve and give us many more DCH/Johny
Gaddar/Rock On.

Hail ARR,
Jagdeesh

[arr] "I am happy for A.R. Rahman" - Vikas Swarup

2009-02-02 Thread Vithur
Books - In Conversation with Vikas
Swarup
ZIYA US SALAM

His more salt-than-pepper hair does not quite go with his persona. He writes
briskly; once he wrote 20,000 words over a weekend! He talks fast too;
cheerfully as well, making it almost impossible for him to sound ponderous.
He sprinkles his sentences with a liberal dose of humour. And refrains from
saying the obvious. He may not exactly be in love with "Slumdog
Millionaire", Danny Boyle's film based on his debut book Q&A, but is
diplomatic enough not to criticise the film in public. He is not your
everyday writer. He is, in fact, an everyday bureaucrat, who "moonlights as
an author".

Welcome to the world of Vikas Swarup who until the other day was yet another
diplomat with pretensions of wielding a pen. "We might as well open an IFS
School of Writing," he jokes hours before the premier of "Slumdog
Millionaire" on the sidelines of the recently-concluded Jaipur Literature
Festival. A little away from the crowd, he decides to pick up Mohammed
Hanif's A Case of Exploding Mangoes and transforms himself into a stillness
so unexpected of a man who exudes life and energy.

What does he have to say about the movie? "A visual delight. 'Slumdog…' is
an evocative title more suited to the film," he says, then stops. A shade
strange, considering when he speaks there are few commas and hardly any full
stops.

Candid talk

Prod him a bit more and Vikas takes recourse in the sayings of Sanker
Mukherji, the famous Bengali writer whose books were adapted for the big
screen by the legendary Satyajit Ray. "Sanker once said, a book turned into
a film is like a daughter given away in marriage. And the film is like a
son-in-law. A wise man never says a bad thing about his son-in-law!"

Vikas may not have his tongue firmly in his cheek, but he is willing to be
candid. "When I saw the film I was not shocked. I was never invited to the
sets and I learnt a writer is not an integral part of production. I got no
invitations for the Golden Globes either. When they were happening in Los
Angeles I was in Pretoria. But post-awards, I did some 35 interviews in two
days in London! I did not know the Golden Globes were that huge!"

He is indeed frank without sounding scathing! How is that possible? "I don't
have to write every day. I am not the kind of writer who would say if he
cannot write he cannot breathe. I am happy even without writing. Often
writers make you reach for the dictionary. I would rather have them reach
for the hanky. I am your ultimate role model as a writer. I have no formal
training in writing, did not study literature. I write the first draft of my
first book and it becomes a hit! If I can, so can you. For me putting
together the first book was nothing but a challenge: if I too can be
published! In the end it turned out to be sickeningly easy. I don't even
know about the genre of Q&A."

The actual writing

He makes it sound so simple, in fact beguilingly simple to write a book that
has been translated into 36 languages! "The Dutch and Swedish translations
came ahead of the English. I wrote the book in 2003, it was published in
2005 and the film scouts asked me in 2004," he says, ready to walk down
memory lane one more time. "It was quite some time back when I started. I
wrote the first draft over two months in London. My wife and kids had
preceded me to India. I was alone. I had solitude. I wrote four and a half
chapters and sent to 10 agents. None of them responded. One day I was
surfing the Net and came across Peter Buchman who offered to help. He asked
for two chapters on mail. He replied within 24 hours. I was thrilled.
Writers don't get response that promptly from any agent or publisher! He
liked what I wrote. I consulted Patrick French too who advised me not to
sign for the book if the agent asked for money. Peter came and all went off
well. Then I wrote like a maniac as I was about to be posted as a political
counsellor to Pakistan where there is no concept of beginning or ending the
day! Once I wrote 20,000 words over a weekend to meet my deadline."

Reactions

T`hat is fine, but was not the Government a shade perturbed by the contents;
the focus on India's underbelly? "There is nothing diplomatic about the
book," he says diplomatically. Asked to elaborate, he says, "I did not
present India Shining. Indian reality is too vast, too complex. The book
only offers a slice of Indian life. I have never lived in Dharavi but I have
been to the slums. More than research I needed empathy as a writer. The
Government gives you that artistic freedom to write. I did not face any
interference in my writing. In fact the only time there was pressure on me
to edit part of the book was when I got a call from the American publishers
who wanted to edit some dark portions. I said go ahead but if you do that,
40 per cent of the book would be gone and you won't have much left!"

Well, not much

Be it Dard-E-Disco, Chak De India , Rut Aa gayi Re from 1947 Earth, Chaiyya
Chaiyya , Ramta Jogi from Taal, Kava Kava from Monsoon Wedding , Jalwa from
Fashion and Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire... This singer has been
consistent in singing chartbuster numbers. Sukhvinder Singh got candid
with Renuka
Vyavahare about his Oscar nominated song ' Jai Ho ' and his reaction to him
deserving a Grammy for is vocal talent.

Rahman has won three Oscar nominations for Jai ho. Are you expecting a
Grammy nomination too?
I am actually a Slumdog Millionaire. I had nothing when I started singing
and few songs of mine have made me a millionaire! I am more than happy for
Rahman and his three nominations at the Oscars. The fact that Jai Ho has
been such a huge hit internationally itself is my Grammy award.

So all geared up to perform live at the Oscars with Rahman?
I am leaving for Chennai tomorrow and only then will I know what will be my
role at the ceremony. I have to first sit and personally wish Rahman for his
Oscar nominations.

Do you feel sidelined in spite of having sung a song which has become a
worldwide hit?
Working with Rahman means everything to me and frankly when I sing at live
concerts the audiences enjoy my song from Fashion (Jalwa) more than anything
else. My other song this year that has been a big hit is Haule Haule and I
am happy with all my songs. I have sung limited but different and interested
numbers.

Did you ever feel that Jai Ho and Slumdog will become such a huge hit?
I always knew that Rahman will be nominated for Oscars as well as Golden
Globe. I always call him Mr International as his music sounds very western.
He doesn't agree with me though and says "Sukhvinder, just concentrate." As
far as me predicting Jai Ho's success is concerned, when you record with
Rahman you have no clue which film the song is going to get used in. I never
knew he was going to use Ramta Jogi for Taal, Rut Aa gayi Re for 1947 Earth
etc so likewise didn't know Jai Ho will be in Slumdog! But always knew the
song was great and required me to sing naughtily.

So Rahman is unpredictable?
Absolutely, when Rahman, Gulzaar saab and I get together we just work for
our love for music and songs. Be it at any hour of the night, day, noon...
Rahman just calls you in his studio and makes you sing! Many a times you are
not even completely awake to sing!

What is next on cards?
I am planning to launch a music album with Rahman and his music school will
also be actively involved in it.

[arr] Delhi-6 is as much Prasoon Joshi’s album as much a s it is Rahman’s.

2009-02-02 Thread Vithur
Film maker Rakeysh Mehra, composer A.R. Rahman and lyricist Prasoon Joshi
come together after Rang de Basanti to give one of the finest score in years
for Delhi-6. The sum total of all the songs from the movie sounds completely
different from Rang de Basanti yet there are a lot of similarities: the
album has some of the finest compositions of Hindustani Raga based music yet
it has enough contemporary sound to make you groove. The moment you switch
on the album it takes you on a journey of the old walled city through its
lyrics and music and that itself is a triumph for the composer and the
lyricist. Anyone remotely connected to the ways and culture of old Delhi
would instantly identify with the music.

Like Rang de Basanti the album opens with a religious prayer, an Aarti as
opposed to the Gurubani in the earlier album. While the Gurubani was short
Aarti Tumre Bhavan Mein is slightly long but equally calm and spiritual. The
album gets going with the second track Arziyaan a Sufi Qawwali in praise of
Nizamuddin Auliya and many other Sufi saints which is a long standing
tradition of old Delhi. Javed Ali has finally proven why he has become the
chosen one for the genius composer. He has put his soul behind this song.
This is a major step up from the likes of Guzarish and other modern songs he
has belted out in recent past. Arziyan steeped in pure Hindustani
traditional singing style with tablas, harmonium and chorus with very
challenging Antras is a triumph for Rahman, Prasoon, Javed Ali and Kailash
Kher who after a long time has shown why he is the best at this genre.

It would almost be impossible for someone to replicate Ustaad Bade Ghulam
Ali Khan's thumri Bhor Bhaye for a Hindi movie. Shreya Ghosal is chosen to
perform this impossible task and she comes out sounding better then ever.
Except for one small blemish of a screech at a high note, Shreya has
rendered this thumri as only the Mangeshkar sisters would have done.
Newcomer Ash King sings the next song Dil Gira Dafatan in a soft and
sensuous voice as required for this slow romantic ballad. The song sounds
quite different from any Rahman number so far. With just a non stop minimal
chords and sudden strains of violins once in a while this song has some of
the Urdu vocabulary you would find only in a Gulzar song. Genda Phool, a
folk song, has all the ingredients of Namak Ishq Ka including the lead
vocalist Rekha Bhardwaj. The melody and the singing style though traditional
folk, Rahman fuses it with some modern techno beats. The outcome is simply
great.

If Khoon Chala from Rang de Basanti established Mohit Chauhan as a singer
Masakali will propel him to big league singing. Easily the most popular
song, not necessarily the best, Masakali relies heavily on the phonetics of
the lyrics which forms the basis of the song set in an unusually low scale
to begin with. Mohit from the low scales goes up to a falsetto mouthing the
complicated lyrics efficiently over a steady rhythm and accordion being the
main instruments used. Hey Kaala Bandar falls in the same category as
Masakali but is more retro and funky with loads of English lyrics
interspersed with Hindi. The song though remains the weakest link in the
whole album might just become the most popular with the young listeners.

No Rahman album is complete without him donning the role of a singer. So
Rahman gets behind the microphone for Rehna Tu giving a sterling rendition.
The song mainly driven by the melody and lyrics, Rehna Tu sounds completely
serene and soulful. Tanvi Shah, Claire and Vivianne joins Blaze and Benny
Dayal for the title track Delhi 6 reminiscent of Khalbali and Pathshala..
Though the sounds are very much similar the structure of this title track is
more layered and the lyrics descriptive of the city.

Delhi-6 is as much Prasoon Joshi's album as much as it is Rahman's. Both
compliment each other so well that it is difficult to imagine one without
the other for this wonderful soundtrack. The year 2009 has already achieved
a benchmark with this album and it would take an inspired effort by others
to surpass it. Just the song Arziyaan for its Sufi traces, devotional lyrics
and soulful singing is worth every penny of this album.

Yuvvraaj took me a bit to latch on, but it continues to rise for me.
Dost, Muskura, Zindagi, Mohiney, Rishta.what amazing tracks...
The only downer was Shano. But, the other tracks more than make up
for this weak link. The arrangements in this album have so much
beauty...it' s just a beautifully ornate album as far as arrangements
with lots of delicacy and intricacy. Tons and tons of oozing melody
with great experimentation of various genres. To me, Yuvvraaj is a
big highlight of 2008 and one of Rahman's best. How he continues to
create such beautiful and ORIGINAL compositions is just mind boggling.

wow! what a resemblance. . i had this effect after listening to
vetrikodi kattu from padayappa, chale chalo from lagaan, jaage hain from guru
and the worldspace tune...
ARRs music has a magical effect.

heveanly, peaceful feeling [actually I'm unable to describe it properly] & I
want to stay in that for a while... so I have to stop the player before it
starts the next song...

Here are couple of other
 examples...

1. Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna [longer version] - You won't beleive me when I say
this, but there are few songs which are my all time favorites but which I try
to avoid listening! This is one of them... coz when this song finishes, tears
are rolling down my face freely & at the same time I feel emotionally charged!
& many times, that's it for the evening... no more songs after this one...

2. Inn Lamhon Ke Daman Mein - Not as profound effect as the above one, but
this one gives me different kind of indescribable feeling. At the second last
Ishq Hai Jaise Hawaon Mein [& the flute part after that], I have to stop
whatever I'm doing at that moment, I have to close my eyes & I have to
experience it... Everytime, it makes me do this... & again, no songs for next
30 mins or so...

Few other songs like these are: Chinna Chinna Asai, Meherbaan, Do Kadam, Zikr...

-Vishwesh.

Hi Neetika,

Here are the lyrics of Mann Chandre, Could you pls translate this.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Mann chandre nu raas naa aave,
Mann chandre nu raas naa aave,
Naa aave darwaas.
Jiggar daa saudaa kyon kar baithaa?
Mukdi jaandi aas.

Je lut jaandaa te lut jaandaa dil,
Hauke khaa ke chup jaandaa.
Je lut jaandaa te lut jaandaa dil,
Hauke khaa ke chup jaandaa.

Beparvaa daa ki kehna? Haaye!
Naa aave darwaas,
Jiggar daa saudaa kyon kar baithaa?
Mukdi jaandi aas!

Darad sautondaa, Bedardaan nu,
Bedardaa daa ki jaandaa?
Darad sataundaa, Bedardan nu,
Bedardaa daa ki jaandaa?
Bedardaa daa ki jaandaa?

No, Its not a bhajan.

i understand punjabi little bit

Its a song sung by heartbroken guy..

Man chandra means like abusing the heart(Bad heart)
(Man = Heart, Chandra = Bad).

its kinda like

My Bad heart is not interested in anything now(after the pain i got)!!!

"Jigar da sauda ki kar baitha, Mukadi jaye aas"

After the trade of heart, I am losing all hopes

If someone can provide full lyrics of the song, it wud b helpful to translate
as i can ask my grandmother to translate the words for me [She is my official
translater for all punjabi lyrics.. right from chaiyan chaiya, Dholna(Thakshak)
days.]

Even the picturisation of the songs would have been much better. Especially
i feel sad about Tu Meri Dost hai. Such a beautiful melody having
picturised very badly, which is a pity. Dont know what to say about Mr.
Ghai's creativeness on this.
But yes Yuvvraaj is a great album with the gems well weaved within itself.
and Dil Ka Rishta, wo what a gr88 composition and lyrics. I really
love the songs. It feels much more royal and respectful while hearing.

2009-02-02 Thread Srini Santhanam

Jodi movie was a hit? thats shocking to say the least.

Its one of the dozen movies taken JUST because he managed to get 5-6
remade songs from AR..

I remember how i was cheated into buying this cassette by the shop
keeper saying its a NEW album by AR!! but then Nendhikitten saw the
launch of a new talent 'Karthik' which till date remains one of my
favorite songs.

Cheers,
Srini

Its very unfortunate that the movie flopped, because of which the
songs went unnoticed.

The only downer was Shano. But, the other tracks more than make up
for this weak link. The arrangements in this album have so much

beauty...it's just a beautifully ornate album as far as arrangements
with lots of delicacy and intricacy. Tons and tons of oozing melody
with great experimentation of various genres. To me, Yuvvraaj is a
big highlight of 2008 and one of Rahman's best. How he continues to

create such beautiful and ORIGINAL compositions is just mind boggling.

It also sounded similar to " Azage Sugamaa" from Paarthale Paravasam... After
all, its Harris. So, it would always sound Rahmantic...

The story and the screenplay of the film was bit outdated. But overall it was
very decent movie which carried a special message to people. A.R.Rahman's music
gave richness to the proceedings of the film. Mr.Ghai has unique way of
directing the movies and was known to be "The Showman" of Indian
Cinema, Yuvvraaj is also very decent film which was directed well  but the only
problem with the film was the story of the movie. Mr.Ghai should had been aware
of the fact that such kind of movies will not work in recent times.

Problem with Yuvvraaj was week screen-play and lost script..
and songs were't filmed properly..
I remember here film' one two ka four' ..It had so nice
music composed by our boss..but story wasn't good enough.
I can not forget songs like 'sona nahi chandi nahi'/'khamoshiyan'
/ale ale..etc..

this music was aslo got unnoticed..

Yes the vocals are by Anuradha Sriram. Her choice for that patriotic song is
one of the best that ARR has done.

Delhi 6 has its own qualities..we can not compare
Boss' albums like this..Whatever he creates is according to
film, scripts, directors in mind..
you can not have Genda phool song in Ada/JTYJN kind of films..
All songs of d-6 are very much appropriate and are masterpieces..

Whatever it may be to different people..but our ARR rocks big time

[arr] A.R. Rahman on the cover of People Magazine

A.R. Rahman on the cover of People Magazine

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, January 31, 2009 - 12:44 IST

The film Slumdog Millionaire has been making headlines for the number of Oscar
nominations that it has garnered and the Golden Globes that it has won.
However, this one individual associated with this film has been blessed with
success at every step that he took in his career. But he has not once taken it
for granted; instead he has worked even harder to outdo himself. He is none
other than A R Rahman.

This month in People magazine, musician A.R. Rahman opens up about the
philosophy that makes him a great artist. The soft-spoken maestro attributes
his success as much to his tremendous talent as having “ethics, commitment,
passion and friendship”. After taking the international stage by storm with his
score for Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman is now intent on cementing his reputation
further.

Talking about his spiritual side, Rahman says, “It boosts my confidence,
instills humility and detaches me from everything else.” He in fact credits his
father for teaching him to respect people. “My father was a hard worker and
never judged musicians by their compositions. He had great respect for them as
people and I learnt the same.”

Though it is a Hollywood film that won him international acclaim (the Golden
Globe and Oscar nominations), Rahman says that it is the victory of the Indian
music. “My win is a win for Indian music. And I want to bring India more and
more recognition in the field of music.”

And now though the world is at his feet, for Rahman family comes first. “It is
too exhausting to have many films on hand. We all need a personal life. I need
to spend quality time with my family.”

The magazine also features Rahman’s mother Kareema Begum, who treats the
readers with an inside view of his life, “I have to send my grandchildren to
the studio to remind him to have his food.” That just goes to show how
committed he is towards what he is doing…

So all of us here at Bollywood Hungama say cheers to India’s very own
Beethoven.

charismatic, stylish, simple, innocent, deep, adventurous, daring,

I then realized who I'm describingARR himself. His music is a

Hey, I dispute that. :-)

I find D6 much better than ADA.

ADA has deja vu value when it reached us because our man had given such
music after many years (may be after priyanka) in that, but after
hearing it often, it is single-theme sort of. Not variety, really. And
he has given same genre of music earlier. Not getting able to see the
movie reduces the interest in its music.

D6 has variety, and has novelty. Our man never gave a Genda Phool
earlier. Arziyan is so soothing, compared to that charged muslim
devotional probably in Mangal Pandey or was it Bhagat Singh. Dil Gira is
  a Khamosh Raat genre song.

D6 is stunning AND IS A MASTERPIECE, more so than ADA.

Jagjit Singh, earlier this week, criticized AR Rahman for not using

Ghazals in his films, saying, "What does AR Rahman know about Ghazals?"

The noted singer has now said that he doesn't, in any way, want to

criticize Rahman's music. In an interview with a local newspaper, he

said, "Actually, what I meant was Rahman, being an innovative

award-winning composer who connects with today's Gen-Next, should also

include ghazals written by stalwarts like Gulzar in his film repertoire.

He also feels that Rahman has, of late, been restricting himself to

certain genres. "Of late, he has been confining himself to jazzy and

folksy-fusion Indipop. Since he is versatile enough, he should be able

to come up with fabulous ghazals and popularize them."

Yes, you are right, though it's modern in sound, the melody feel is
similar to Dil Se... Even I remember I predicted this last year and I

Actually I'm eagerly waiting for "Delhi 6". My expectations are
something dark and soulful music like Dil Se. If not melodies,
atleast Rahman will keep the sound feel of Dil Se / Swades.
Since "Delhi 6" is autobiographical movie of Director O.P.Mehra,
sure they'll have one or more solo songs by ARR. :) .. That'll be a
real delight!!

And my guess is, Ghajini will be entirely dedicated to Mainstream
music! (in between J.O.K / JTYJN)

feel 'Kwaja mere' has the most divine touch.

[arr] Jagjit Singh clarifies statement on AR Rahman

2009-02-02 Thread A.R.Rajib

Re: [arr] My love for Yuvvraaj continues to grow

2009-02-02 Thread rajab great
I saw the movie yesterday. For that storyline, Ghai Saab had given enormous
musical space for Rahman. And our Guru didn't disappoint. It was fitting to see
him in the end of credits. Probably if the film had bit more pace to it would
have been a hit.

Its very unfortunate that the movie flopped, because of which the songs went
unnoticed.

Dost, Muskura, Zindagi, Mohiney, Rishta.what amazing tracks...
The only downer was Shano. But, the other tracks more than make up
for this weak link. The arrangements in this album have so much
beauty...it's just a beautifully ornate album as far as arrangements
with lots of delicacy and intricacy. Tons and tons of oozing melody
with great experimentation of various genres. To me, Yuvvraaj is a
big highlight of 2008 and one of Rahman's best. How he continues to
create such beautiful and ORIGINAL compositions is just mind boggling.

patriotism.

Guys please help me.

[arr] Dil Se & Delhi 6

2009-02-02 Thread Sunil VG
For me, Delhi 6 is the Dil Se of this era. Songs like Rehna Tu, Dil Gira
Dafatan & Masakali are creatively as innovative and pathbreaking as Dil Se
Re, Chaiyya Chaiyya & Jiya Jale were those days. Sonically speaking, perhaps
there's not as much scope for innovation as there was during Dil Se. But let
us give credit where it is due. Delhi 6 is absolutely stunning. A
masterpiece of this era.

Sunil
