I can't put to words my joy that Rahman Sir has won 2 Oscars!! After
BAFTA win I wrote an article as a tribute to Rahman Sir, so after Oscar
win I found it fitting to write one more. I've written about a
condition called Rahmania - which is a condition of sheer joy or
exhilaration when exposed to music of Rahman Sir's music (Familiar
feeling isn't it?). Here is the link, I hope you like my humble mark of

Implying that ghazals are the only true form of music is very arrogant. I
believe Jagjit Singh is just another opportunist having his 15 secs of fame in
bashing Slumdog. Very obviously he has not heard the full umbrella of Rahman's
compositions and expecting Rahman to cater to his genre is very demanding.
Nobody asks Jagjit Singh to come out with a Carnatic, Rock or Hip Hop number.
His main forte is ghazals and we dont demand him change, expecting Rahman to
compose for every genre in the world overriding the theme in the movie is not
practical. Glad to see Aadesh Srivastav and Alka Yagnik defending Rahman with
valid points

Subject: [arr] When you are number one, there WILL be a bullseye target on your
back

If happens everywhere. It's the nature of the beast. Jealousy, envy,
whatever it is. When you're the top of the game, THE top, you will
have shots coming your way. It is to be expected.

Rahman is the best. He is receiving lots of attention, praise, etc.
The comments by Mr. Singh to me are not surprising given that I knew
that one of these days, someone would open their mouth and say
something negative about ARR. It was bound to happen. And it WILL
probably happen again. Someone will speak to the media and say
something sarcastic, or negative about Rahman, similar to what Ismail
Darbar said about Rahman a few years ago.

What bothered me about Mr. Singh's comments is that even if he didn't
mean to attack Rahman himself, the way his comments came out sounded
very accusatory and insulting, essentially saying, What Rahman has
accomplished is really not that great given that he has not composed
ghazals since ghazals are the ultimate and superior form of music.
His tone was arrogant and of superiority. Why couldn't he have just
said I would love for Rahman to compose ghazals since films today
don't have a lot of them. Rahman is talented and versatile enough to
compose ghazals. It is obvious that Mr. Singh has issues related to
anger and bitterness over his life and the fact that he is not getting
many film assignments. A person of his age and stature shouldn't be
making such impulsive and blunt remarks. I would expect that from a
junior artist or someone much younger.

When people make such comments about how Rahman uses only Western
tunes, did they ever hear his soundtracks such as Water, Earth,
Lagaan, Bose? What about songs like Piya Ho, Naina Neer, Na Shiqua
Hota, Mujphe Toofan, Sarfarosh Ki Tamanna, Desh Ki Mitti, Ghooparani,
Tere Bina, etc. etc.? You would get the feeling that they think that
Rahman only composes songs like Pappu all the time!!

Actually the competition for best music as i see is between ARR ARR ARR
and SEL i.e. Jodhaa Akbar JTYJN (although contemporary, the songs are
amazing) Yuvraaj (if it is as good as the author suggests, as I haven't
heard it yet) and Rock On!(SEL have rocked everyone and potentially
revived Indian rock scene, Sindbad the sailor!!).

Re: [arr] A.R.Rahman isn't a good judge of scripts

2008-10-16 Thread ashwin
The author mentions that movies by new directors that were hit were
backed by strong personalities. Lagaan was produced by Aamir Khan.
Rakeysh Mehra himself admits that without Aamir the movie was not
possible, hence again the movie had strong backing.
As I don't watch Tamil movies I can't comment on them.
However, i'd say that a good script rendered badly on screen can also
spoil a movie. But with the kind of movies being churned out of
Bollywood, ARR's choice seems spot on, with a few exceptions obviously
like Lakeer, Kisna. But I'm glad he did compose music for them!
So an interesting observation indeed!

Wow! That is hilarious indeed, and what better time to read it than
when you can do with a good laugh? I loved the last sentence even

Actually, I had the same thought when I heard Kahin to. Although, it
might just be a coincidence that Rahman Sir mentioned his liking for

yes melodious songs with simple orchestration with meaningful (or
mushy) lyrics seem to be a trend right now.

Re: [arr] Jakkubai Music

2008-06-07 Thread Ashwin Saravana Kumaar
All know that Rajini launched the movie JAGGUBHAI in 2004 with KSR as
director and ARR as MD. Infact ARR himself comfirmed that he composed
a song for that movie. But since the movie was shelved, ARR used the
song in AH AAH - ANBE AARUYIRE.

ARR compensated KSR for this shelved project by working in GODFATHER.
The movie took ages to see lights and ultimately the qaulity music
for that movie went unnoticed.

Anyway, with regards to the current version of JAGGUBHAI with Sarath,
I think its not worth doing a movie that gonna be a political
propaganda (whatso ever be the original storyline).

Would it be Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak once again with the arrival of Jaane Tu...
Ya Jaane Naa? This is the first feeling one got the moment the first look of
this Aamir Khan production was out. Marking the launch pad of his nephew,
Imraan Khan, Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Naa seems to be another innocent love story in
the offering sans any unnecessary mush, hence going truly with contemporary
times. With pretty girl Genelia D'Souza opposite Imraan in this campus flick
and A.R. Rahman as the composer, this Abbas Tyrewala debut directorial venture
(he also doubles up as a lyricist here), JTYJN, is a promising flick arriving
this summer. Does the music hold up to the promise? The answer is - Yes!

Write your own music review of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na First things first - when
the best of the best of 2008 would be written down, the number 'Kabhi Kabhi
Aditi Zindagi' would definitely find a mention. Crooned by newcomer Rashid Ali
who is being introduced by Rahman on Bollywood musical arena, the song is
beautiful from the word GO, the moment guitar strings mark the song's
beginning.

Rashid's voice is just perfect for an actor who is being launched in a youthful
romantic entertainer and the singer utilizes the big platform to the fullest.
While Abbas' lyrics go truly with contemporary times, it is a nice change to
hear a Rahman composition in a truly mainstream cinema rather than the
historical/period/ issue based films for which he has been creating music for
quite some time now.

In true Rahman style, he gets together a bunch of singers for the track 'Pappu
Can't Dance'. Well, this is the track which is supposedly a spoof on Salman
Khan's on and off screen image and has been making news in last few days. The
song's beginning has a rhythm which has formed a part of the racy proceedings
in the first teaser of Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Naa that had kick started the film's
promotion a few weeks back.

Anupama, Benny Dayal, Blazee, Tanvi, Darshana, Satish Subramanium and Aslam
come together to sing about this character called 'Pappu' who has seen all the
riches in his life. Since the day he was born, he roams around in the best of
the cars, has a body to die for, boasts of an impeccable style, but alas, can't
dance to save his life. Hence the title - 'Pappu Can't Dance'. A fast moving
fun song, which has a campus setting to it and also appears in a 'remix
version', 'Pappu' is a song which should be fun when watched on the big screen.

It's a new sound at the very beginning of 'Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai (Aditi)' that
hooks you on instantaneously. This very rhythm stays throughout this song which
is crooned for the female character of the film, Aditi, by yet another relative
newcomer Runa. If the song's haunting tune wasn't enough, the way Runa renders
the track makes it one as the sad theme of the song conveys what the
protagonist is going through. A number about a girl remembering the times gone
by with the boy she loved, 'Jaane Tu' is composed in a style, which is similar
to that of 'Zara Zara' [Rehnna Hai Terre Dil Mein] and hence can be expected to
grow over a period of time.

The song is later heard in a version meant for the film's male protagonist Jai
and is titled 'Jaane Tu Meri Kya Hai (Jai)'. This time around the beginning is
even more somber and takes it's own time to reach the stage where Sukhwinder
Singh comes around to hold the center stage. The pensive mood is conveyed well
yet again though this time around the version is even more somber.

Guitar is at play once again in the number 'Nazrein Milaana Nazrein Churaana'.
The best song to arrive after 'Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi', 'Nazrein' deserves
to be the next song in line for promotion. Packed with youthful energy, the
number has a Rahman stamp all over it and goes in perfectly well with the
film's campus mood. In fact just one hearing and you are sure to carry the
number along for your next camp fire outing.

Yet again, it's an array of singers - Benny Dayal, Satish Chakravarthy, Naresh
Iyer, Darshana, Shwetha, Tanvi, Bhargavi, Anupama - who come together but never
once does one feels like trying to find out the singer

it repeats the first line from the song Kabhi Kabhi.

I was surprised myself that Guru won Best Music award that too in the

deserve the award. Although I have heard only two songs of Metro so I
may be wrong in comapring with TZP and Guru. I consider bin tere kya
jeena as one of Sir ARR's greatest works. I see it in this way : TZP
and Guru both had fantastic music, and both deserved the award. (Also,
remember SEL vs ARR in music category for Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai??)

About BGM I can only say that I loved Guru's BGM, but since i havent
watched too many movies, I cant comment on the award.

Coming to RDB versus Omkara, barring the title track, i think music of
RDB is miles ahead. khalbali is such a a deep and moving song,
enhanced with mind-blowing orchestration, and the lukka Chhuppi is
just par excellence. And I think tu bin bataye deserved more
recongition, it is so heart rendering!

No one can replace any one. IR was not a replacement for MSV, ARR was
not a replacement for IR. Similarly, YSR is not or cannot replace
ARR. There is no replacements for legends and one can't be compared
with other. YSR should stand on his own.

There is got to be something out of this world to beat ARR.

guys...its been in the mind of ppl that...yuvan will overtake
rahman in next few years...

yuvan has been consistent in his form of music he gives..still it
is good...

the whole world expected ARR to give out his best in
ATMeventually it didnt do wat we expected...

the problem is rahman's music is 'slow poison' kind of music.we
need to hear it 10+ times to get with the tune and lyrics...

on first hearing..ppl say its totally a crap...

but yuvan makes impression imdtly after the release..

is the age factor has taken a toll on his form of music

cos rahman at this age gave his good...better. ...best form of

[arr] Re: Pronounciation ( Diction)

2007-09-02 Thread ashwin
I'd like to say that pronounciation varies from region to region. I
remember our Hindi teacher would pronounce van(hindi word for forest)
as bun, and he is a proper north Indian.

I personally dont find any probem with Rahman Sir's diction. If
anything, i find it to be quite distinctive and actually like the way
he pronounces some of the words.

I agree with KunalWould you say that because somebody had the Theen taal
(tabla) in a song...nobody else can use it. If somebody else used it, would you
actually be shocked. Its just a sequence of beats / notes. The true gift would
be using it a place where it sounds not just good but great.

People make Loop CDs and sample banks specially for composers to use in their
music. I dont think there is any composer in the world who has worked without
samples and loops. When it is made specially for them... why not use it ???

A silent user here (but also a composer),

Hi guys and girls,

Me as a omposer do use lots of samples, not in all my music. Ofcourse

I'm not the only one who uses these samples.

Last month I bought a sample bank: Uberschall - Da Nu RnB, Hip Hop

Drum Loops and Samples.

I was really glad hearing these awesome samplestill suddenly I

heard a simmilarity between a sample song called Hip Harp and Munbe

Munbe Vaa!!!

I was really shocked, it was like A. R. Rahman used these samples but

played them in adifferent range! it sounds like a complete lift! Even

the beat measure of this sample is a clear copy of the rythm used by

A. R. Rahman in Munbe Munbe Vaa!!!

I like you guys to hear these samples, but pls give me a good link

where i can upload these files.

Warning : DO NOT GET SHOCKED HEARING THESE SAMPLES, THESE SAMPLES ARE

MADE BEFORE A. R. RAHMAN'S MUNBE MUNBE VAA!!!

I can say, that everybody uses samples, wheter they are beats or

sounds. Every producers gets inspired by some samples. Even A. R.

Rahman, the biggist composer of these times, uses samples in his

music arts.

Do not reply stupidness untill you heared these samples, otherwise you

are fooling yourself and others. First listen to the sample and then

give you're opinion.

Sorry for my bad English:P

Subject: [arr] Is it me or that snare too loud?

Hello Rahmaniacs,

I was listening to Guru again, just like every other day. I know, I
know, most people have moved on to Sivaji. I still have the hangover
from Guru as I'm trying to absorb Sivaji. Wow, every song in Sivaji
is so unique and like always slow poison. Well, going back to Guru,
Tere Bina in particular.

It's definitely one of the best ARR songs, plus him singing it puts it
in another league completely. But if there is one thing I wish was
different about the song is the snare beat. Although the use of snare
itself is great, I find the pitch and volume of the snare a bit out
of place. I'm not critisizing Rahman, because as a fan I have come to
realize many a times that some of the unusual sounds in his songs
are intentional. Only the master knows his work and all we could do
is try to understand it. So, whether the snare bit there is
intentional? I don't know. May be it was Rahman's decision, may be it
was the work of the sound engineers. I'll never know. But I do know
that I would have appreciated the song a tab bit more, if the snare
hadn't been that loud.

The song itself has a very hindustani/sufi elements to it, as it is
inspired by Sajna tera bina by NFAK. The singing and instruments
for the most part are also along the same lines, if there is one thing
different about the mood of the song is the snare beat. The snare
sounds like it is out of a pop/rock/english song. Again, that is
intentional, I'm not surprised by that, it is Rahman after all, and in
fact I feel it's great fusion. But I can't ignore the sharpness and
volume of the snare that it sometimes sounds like some kind of timer
ticking. And its volume level varies throughout the song. I feel as
if it was added on top of the song after the whole song was done.

It sounds great when it starts at 00:20
All of a sudden there's a sharpness/volume increase at 00:39
It goes through minor changes in between and gets completely dropped
at 02:06 - The song sounds great without it.
It re-enters at a moderate level again at 02:47
It is well-blended with the background beat between 03:00 and 03:58
Then you can hear it in varying degrees until the song ends.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I've had to turn the volume down
during certain parts of the song due to the snare. I know what you
are thinking, What is he doing complaining about the little things?

Well, I'm a Rahman fan, and by definition it means that I do pay
attention to and care about minute details in Rahman's songs.

But another thing I know about myself is that I have very sensitive
ears, I sometimes pick up sounds that most people in the room do not.
And that could just be a contributing factor to the whole situation.
So I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same way about the
snare being loud or is it just me after all?

Regards,
Wasim.

[arr] Is that the CD Cover? Not impressive

2007-03-30 Thread Ashwin Saravana Kumaar
The so called CD cover with AVM Musik label is not that impressive,
even ayngaran's release version cover looks better. I hope this is just
the 3D sticker (maybe such colours and backdrop r ideal for 3d/hologram
stickers) and not the actual CD/Audio Cover.

[arr] There is no more the same old fun excitement of audio releases

2007-03-29 Thread Ashwin Saravana Kumaar
There use to be a time, when there were no big audio release
functions, audio hits the stands silently. But some how fans get to
know abt the audio release details. At the same time there use to be
a lot of excitement while grabbing a copy of the audio b'coz it is
only at that instant we get to know how many songs or who is singing
and other such details. And then breaking the seal and listening to
the songs 1 by 1, is a great experience.
It is a well known fact that it was ARR who initiated the audio boom
in tamil industry. And others started capitalizing it. We can say 90s
was a golden ers for tamil audio industry, especially 98-99 when all
MDs were at top form (ARR had nearly 8 tamil releases that season). I
sure all audio buyers of 90s would have felt the same excitement.
Now, though we have hi-tech facilities, we don't have the same old
excitement. Songs gets leaked b4 release, pirated audios and mp3 hits
the stands. Poor audio investers, they find is difficult even to take
back their money.
But even at these hard conditions Rajini's movie or it's audio
maintained those sort of excitement. But in the case of Sivaji, the
excitment is only going to be half. B'coz half of the album is out
already. But still I am pining up hopes for the other half and also
expecting some more programming in the leaked songs.
But what ever be the case, we don't get to feel the some old
excitement that use exist in mid 90s.

[arr] I still believe there is a suprise packet awaiting for the fans.

2007-03-22 Thread Ashwin Saravana Kumaar
According to 1 report, it seems Shanker has plans to have few songs
(maybe appearing in the audio) and scenes that will not be a part of
the movie. They will be used for promotion of the audio-movie and give
a different idea about the final output. Their intensions are to
suprise the fans when the hear the actual audio and watch the actual
movie. If my calculations are correct then I feel that these 3 tracks
have been deliberately released by AVM Co to make the fans April(4)
fools. If my calculations are wrong then it AVM Co who are going to
be April fools.

[arr] There could be a suprise in the Sunlight song when the actual album is out.

2007-03-18 Thread Ashwin Saravana Kumaar
Ofcourse, I admit the fact that this 40sec sample is from the movie
Sivaji (This time around the fourms have something really from Sivaji,
and not a fake one). But we can expect some suprise when the album is
out. According to the intial reports, this was the song that was
composed by ARR with his laptop. The song was composed tentatively for
the shoot to go ahead on time. It was also said in the report that ARR
was asked to work on it with some more additional programming. So, I
feel that this sample is the tentatively made piece and not the final
output. Maybe, I could be wrong also.

Post Rang De Basanti and Fanaa we haven't heard much from Aamir Khan
on the filmi scene. However the actor, off late, has been pretty
busy
with acting, production and rumouredly also ghost direction.

Firstly he is producing Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na that marks the
directorial debut of script writer Abbas Tyrewala. Recently rumours
had it that the film has been renamed to Main Hoon Na Maqbool. This
is hilarious, exclaims Abbas Tyrewala. Perhaps the rumour
originated
from the fact that Abbas happens to be the writer of both Main Hoon
Na
and Maqbool. But Main Hoon Na Maqbool is a better title. I should
have thought of it before, he adds teasingly. The title of the film
is confirmed as Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.

Speaking about the cast of the film Abbas says, Aamir's nephew
Imraan
Khan will be seen as the male lead. He is Aamir's sister's son. I
can't divulge much about him at this moment, but he is definitely
one
actor to watch out for! Genelia D'souza of Tujhe Meri Kasam and
Masti
fame has been finalized to play the female lead.

The film about young love is almost reaching completion. Says
Tyrewala, We will be shooting continuously till the first week of
April. A few months of post-production after that and hopefully then
the movie will be ready for release!

So is Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na a period film? No, it is not a period
film, says Tyrewala, But it is not very modern as well. It has
sensibilities of five years back. While Aamir is producing the
film,
PVR Cinemas is presenting it. A. R. Rahman is composing the music
for
 this film.

Being an Aamir Khan production we question Abbas if there is any
possibility of Aamir Khan making a cameo in the film and he
confirms,
Aamir himself will not be seen anywhere in the film. However there
are a lot of other actors in the film who will make a special
appearance including Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Arbaaz
Khan
 and Arshad Warsi

Apart from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Aamir is also producing a film
called
Tare Zameen Par that is being directed by Amol Gupte. Aamir plays
the
male lead of this film. He will also be starring in the remake of
Tamil film Ghajini that pairs him with Ayesha Takia. Finally there
is
Mani Ratnam's Lajjo where he is cast opposite Kareena Kapoor.

 Could you ever listen

What cynicism exists in this group! How can one be so
 judgemental?

Essentially what Jatin Lalit are saying is that their album KKHH
sold

more copies than Dil Se. First of all, those were the facts. And

secondly, they are not belittling the music of Dil Se at all! In

fact, it shows that the current phase of music listening is wired
to

listen more to 'entertainment' music than 'classic' music.

I have grown tired of people putting down other music-director' s

music, implying that only Rahman can create good music. Of
course, I

believe with all of Rahman fans, that he is the best. But, even

Rahman appreciates good music by other people. The focus should
be on

good music, not on rebelling against non-Rahman music.

Jatin Lalit have been praised by even Rahman at times, as having

their own original style of music. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai till date

remains one of the most popular love songs of this generation.
Pehla

nasha, all songs from DDLJ, Khamoshi, Ghulam, Sarfaroosh, Chalte

Chalte, Yes Boss, and all the way to Fannah -- they have some

impressive line up of gems. And something JL really brought to

Bollywood was the youth feel combined with RDBurman touches, to

provide very up-beat and feel good music. And as far as the genre
of

marriage numbers is concerned, Jatin Lalit do take the cake with

bringing in a new dimension to that.

It is indeed unfortunate for Bollywood to have lost this talented
duo

to personal conflicts. However, lets not forget their
contribution to

  good music.

[arr] Re: Muqala Muqabula- Most famous song

2006-05-26 Thread Ashwin Saravana Kumaar

During 1994-95, there use to be 6-7 hindi songs inspired by Muqala
Muqabula within a same countdown episode in Hindi channels like ZeeTV,
JainTV etc. When Kadhalan was dubbed into hindi, the original Muqala
Muqabula took the No.1 spot while the other inspired songs took the
succeeding spots. Those days the whole countdown show looked like a
Muqala Muqabula Special.

Anu Malik was taking abt this in frustration in a interview during
that season, where he stated that all directors-producers come to him
and ask to compose a item song in their movie with Muqala Muqabula
tune. He was also taking abt using Ottagatha Kattiko tune in the hindi
movie THE GENTLEMAN, and said that ARR was informed abt the usage of
the tune and was given credits.

It may be possible. Usually Mani sir finishes off the talkie portion
quickly. But he takes time for song picturisation and post production
work. It should be mentioned here that he finished off both AE and

thing, Aamir Khan says that Mani sir had signed him and shoot will
start in Oct, so possible.

Point well made. Although Maruti does sell more than mercedes, when
it comes to class and perfection, comes nowhere near it. Maruti is
aimed at th aam junta. Where as a Merc is for those who enjoy and
afford the best. Same way Himesh targets the masses, he makes what
ppl want. Where as Sir ARR make music, which is a class in itself, he
doesn't compromise quality to suit taste of the masses. But somehow I
think this discussion is a bit irrelevant, Sir Rahman has only
recently had a huge success with RDB, so his music still is very much
popular. Also to judge by sales of audio is has lost it's relevance
as u've said b4 me that ppl download mp3 and stuff.

 rather
resorted in downloading mp3's. ARR was the most selling music
director…once…when his albums were selling like hot cakes. I
still
remember whenever his music album releases I used to buy it first
from the store and play it even b4 the radios play it. But things
changed lately. Nowadays people who buy cds or cassettes are
those
who are either anti-mp3's , or those who want to buy the original

who
dun have computers or who dun know to search in the web. How many

Himesh Reshammiya on the other hand can't even come close to ARR
 in
terms of standards of music, but surely he can topple ARR in
terms
 of
sales. And why is that ?? Every auto or taxi u drive in north
 India,
u can hear his music playing. And believe me they are one of the
 most
people who still buy cassettes. Every music channel u put on the
 tv,
u c his music playing. The audio cassettes companies like t-

 unbearable
it is, u still can't avoid his crooning. Its like with his music,
 its
paisa vasool for everyone. The directors, producers who attract
 huge
crowd bcoz of his chart-busters. The dj's and remix kings who
 remix
almost every song of his and thus make money and put it in album.
 The
audio companies which market 5 songs and 5 remixes of the same
 songs

hi,
I don't think he should take up the Global warming cause because
for one thing it's highly controversial and for another not entirely
correct. Yes the Earth is warming up but up to what extent is it
caused beacuse of human involvement, if it is, is not very clear. It
can just be an environmental trend, like it was global-cooling till
80s. Then also the Earth has experienced the ice-age. So we must
understand that the Environment is dynamic. So it may cool down or
warm up without human invlovement. SO this is one cause that he
shouldn't take up. But if it is conservation of forest and wildlife,
then they r the real issues. By the way I have a yahoo forum
called Save_the_tiger, but till now no1 seems to be talking any
interest in it. So I think, that if Sir ARR takes interest in the
isses i've put forth, ppl will be more aware.

A R R has helped TB, Cancer, Poverty, Tsunami ..etc victims, can he
do
something about Global warming , Pollution ?

It isn't a one man army job cos it is upto us people to also help
in conserving the environment, from say not using plastic bags to
using a cycle , saving water etc.. the list is endless

I believe A R R and we have a great deal to help atleast slow down
this calamity. there are reasons to be alarmed for instant the Time
Mag say the Global Temp will rise to 66 degrees by the mid of this
century !!! A top British scientist says the temp will increase by
3
degrees in the following 5 years - If those things don't sound
 alarming , i don't know what will.

 I LOVE ARR's music, personality , he's a great guy, i believe he
we
can do something about it, we guys should help. There is no point
in
blaming other countries, cos global warming effect will hit every
soul in every corner of the earth.

what can we do ?, suggestions, ideas are most welcome.
let's not stop by just suggestions, post ...etc, it has to be
 implemented!!!

 c y a
 amith
You can should make a difference, Let's put India First

PS: Rahman's music is not good, yes it isn't , because his music is
beyond good, brillance !!!. Hail ARR.

I agree totally that Yeh Jo Ds hai Tera was picturised very well. I'd
say one of the best picturisation of a song that i've seen.

Re: [arr] Is Rahman a complete Director's Choice?

2006-04-07 Thread ashwin
HI,
Well either change his attitude accord'g to every director's
musical tastes.., as you say, or not work with directors at all who's
musical taste isn't good. That will mean lesser no. of albums per
year, well it's not too many as it is, but then each will be a gem.
And I think quality is more important than quality.

Thx for ur support karthik. SJS is ok compared to ks.ravikumar.
he's the worst tastes of music in rahman's group. in 'muthu film,
rahman did most of the songs in his own style, but after that,
rahman put songs for ks.ravikumar's tastes. for eg. in 'thenali
film (in 5, 2 to 3 songs were for ks.ravikumar), then padayappa..
now 'godfather film.

i'm not blaming rahman g, bcos he gives 5 to 6 tunes for every
situation, but the director is the fina decision maker. then rahman
gives 100% full effort to mould the selected tune present it to the
audience, but the result is for only the selected catchy tunes..

in A Aa film, 'Thaluvuthu naluvuthu song.. is also added in ur
list.. other listed songs by u r very correct karthik. what u hv told
for 'parasuram film songs r 100% right. also for udaya film, except 3
songs, others r for director's needs. so, our boss should consider
for these directors, he should do his own style of songs in future..

but in the common view, v hv to say thx for ks.ravikumar sj.surya
for book'g often rahman for his big projects, so v can forgive their
musical tastes. personally i can tell that sj.surya is nice compared
to ks.ravikumar like directors... kulo.

 I support what Kulothungan says.

Take for example E20U15, I think ARR went by the directors taste
and approval. Even Aha..Aaa, he okayed songs which were instantly
liked by SJS, but I know ARR wouldn't have been entirely please with
a couple of songs in that film. He should rather not release a song
for shooting unless he was convinced by himself that its upto his
standards. Not all directors are AG, MR or ROM. We have SJS who has
great filmy brains and good pair of ears but not a musical taste as
refined as the directors I have mentioned.

ARR, cannot score music like, enge enge...Dolna, kathakali
etc..Come on..these songs did not connect with the public at any
level..
where as songs of NEW and aah..aa to an extend went up to B and C
level, but still some of ARR's signatures were missing. What I am
saying is ARR should use his style in these songs also.

then abt rahman's commitment in LOR album, my personal worry abt
rahman is 'he is always the director's musician. consider'g the fact,
all directors can't b a 'maniratnam, 'shankar, 'subash ghai etc.. for
these people, rahman's policy is 200% right regd giving the songs in
their tastes, but for others, rahman can't impress his music on poor
audiences. i always support raja for giving his own kind of music for
the film's purposes not for the director's own interests. so,
mostly he got success, but gained a worst name against the directors
r from other creators.. whether the result is right r wrong, raja is
the only reason ie., nearly 90% for his own decisions. so, my request
is rahman should change his attitude accord'g to every director's
musical tastes..

[arr] Re: Is ARR A Complete Composer.............?

2006-04-07 Thread ashwin
here's my reply,
I think most ppl fret abt Sir ARR being an electronic composer
only because they r not well acquainted with his work. Regarding
the electronic issue, r u aware Sir ARR did not use a single
electronic instrument to get a periodic feel to Lagaan?(According to
Extraa Shots on Max). If you listen to his period movies you'll find
only a minimal, if any, use of electronic instruments. He used Czech
Orchestra for Bose, Mangal Pandey. And by the way Water is on the
way, I'm sure that u won't complain of electronics after listening
to that beautiful soundtrack. Now you can't expect movies like Rang
De Basanti to have symphony, it's a youth movie like many that SIr
ARR has composed for. Just look at the sheer versataility of His,
from Arabic, Karniatic, Hindustani, Western classical, Hip Hop, rock
n' roll(RDB bgm), to folk of GOd knows how many places. And still you
say he's not a complete composer. This doesn't belittle Sir ARR's
work but shows your lack of exposure to ARR magic. My due apologies
for being so blunt.

MD.Accordiong to me, ARR is miles away from becoming a complete
composer. It has been almost 15 years since he has come in to the
industry and he is yet to compose a complete symphony.ARR recently
performed in a renowned london based philharmonic orchestra and to
our disappointment he hardly impressed anyone as a conductor.ARR
was
only the 2nd Asian to have performed at the Royal LOndon
Philharmonic Orchestra after Illayaraaja. Please dont think i am
just against ARR. ARR himself confessed that he failed miserably as
a conductor and promised a much better show next time.
Coming to his composing, he has showed his class in a lot of
songs. His electronic music pleases everyone in this world. But to
me
music is not only the electronic rhythm, pure orchestration is what
a best composer strives for. With due credits to ARR, he has
orchestrated mind blowing pieces. But the amount of orchestration he
uses as against his usual rhythm is very meagre.Symphonies are all
about orchestration. As an indian,i would want ARR be known as a
great composer and conductor because nowadays we can see number of
music directors coming up with their own electronic rhythms in
varied styles, but can anyone of you single out a great
orchestrator
among them.Giving a hit song is not all about music.Eventhough ARR
started his carrer with a lot of orchestration, he has relied more
on elctronic rhythm than orchestration, which is the purest form of
music.I would love to see ARR as an orchestrator than an electronic
 composer.
Please note that I have not posted this message to hurt
anyone.i just found this topic to be intersting and i have just
aired my views.hope you all take it in the right sense. It is
because that I really admire ARR, I had to disagree with a few of
you. Your valuable comments are welcome.

Mr. Fawad,
If you are not an A R Rahman fan sorry to say but you are in a
very wrong place, go find a Nadeem-Shravan forum, if there is one.
But now that you have mentioned them, yes Nadeem-Shravan are good,
barring their copying. But they are nowhere near the class of Sir A R
Rahman. They compose the very conventional songs that sell, but are
only for their time. Whereas Sir A R Rahman brings a freshness to the
stagnant music, without thinking twice whether it sells. The face of
music was changed forever by Sir ARR, with his album Roja. And if you
don't think that song of Roja, Sapnay, Dil Se, and all those immortal
albums were melodius, u've got another think coming.

I'm not sure if i read that right. Was KKHH more popular than Dil

ARR has faced some tough competition. the time of Taal there was Hum
Dil De Chuke Sanam. At the time of Lagaan, Dil Chahta hai and Gadar.
At the time of RDB we've got HImesh crooning hits with a nasal twang.
But inspite of this competitions Sir ARR's albums are still fresh

[arr] Deja vu

2006-03-14 Thread Ashwin Kamath

A lot ofmessages have beenposted about how other composers "copying" rehman's tunes. I would not be that harsh to say the other composers copied the tunes. Here is my take on this.I have a feeling that when you listen to a song for a long time it kind of imbibes itself inside you. Then it starts reflecting in your work.Take Dus Bahane...(rocking number no doubt)but listen carefully to the openingbeats before the singer starts with 'here now;here now'. Now play taal se taal mila, listen to the humming after the initial water drop sounds. Voila we found a match. It would not be wise to sayVishal Shekhar copied these tunes. Its just that they are influenced by Rehman's songs so muchthat it starts showing up in their work. Hell if I started composing music tomorrow, it would be the same case.
So most of the times if certainnotes are similar to a song composed by someone else - it is merely a deja vu. The other song is influencing your song in an indirect way. I would consider such songs as a compliment to Rehman's song rather than take out my knife and rip apart the composers. With all due respect composing music is the mostprecious talentwhich only few people are gifted with. So lets not drag down other composers just to prove our point. On the flip side, we also have some composers who copy songs noteby note. You cannot do much about them. Just stop buying their music. Here is some food for thought The tram sequence bgmfrom yuvawhichgoesas "anjaana anjaani" sounds like the spiderman theme song. You know the one that used to play in the cartoons. Now I doubt if anyone will raise a finger against
Rehman. So just chill guys and enjoy the great music from the maestro.

[arr] ARR needs to concentrate on BGMs in Tamil movies

2006-03-06 Thread Ashwin Saravana Kumaar
In past few tamil movies, ARR's BGM work was average. He mostly
reworks the song tunes and present them in instrumental form. I
recently heard the 14 additional tracks from Ah Aah. I am sad to say
there was nothing special in them to release it in audio form. There
was only 1 theme which keeps repeating nearly 10 times. The remaining
were instrumental versions of the song.
When HJ and YSR are receiving good review for their BGM work, its sad
that ARR lags behind in that dept for the past 2-3 movies.
At the same time ARR is ROCKING in hindi movie BGMs. This may imply
that ARR gets less time to work on BGMs for tamil movies.
Its hope ARR to ROCK with tamil BGMs too in upcoming movies,
especially Sivaji. ARR has always done decent job for Rajini movies.
No 1 can forget the Oongal theme in Padayappa. And I really admired
his BGMs in BABA. He has really done great job even though he was not
given enough time for that.
Some recent articles stated that ARR is keen to rock in all depts in
his upcoming movies. Lets hope for the best.

A Look Inside the Mind and Soul of Composer A.R. Rahman

   By LISA TSERING
   India-West Staff Reporter

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The superstar was down-to-earth, with an
easy
laugh, self-deprecating air, and an ingratiating willingness to
speak
from the heart. A.R. Rahman traced his career from pre-Roja to
post-Rang De Basanti in an intimate, satisfying onstage chat at
Stanford University's Dinkelspiel Auditorium Feb. 14 during the
   school's Pan-Asian Music Festival.

Visiting ethnomusicology professor Natalie Sarrazin prefaced the
conversation by tracing the history of what film music was like
before
a 25-year-old Rahman burst on the scene in 1991 with Roja.

Sarrazin offered a fascinating look at the history of Hindi
film music
with its penchant for absorbing international influences and its
unwritten rules. Each example was illuminated with a charming
snippet
of video, from films such as Shree 420, Sholay and Dilwale
Dulhaniya
   Le Jayenge.

There are certain 'codes' - iconic sound images - that recur in
Indian film music, she said. The timbre of the Indian female
voice
is quite prominent, you hear large orchestras and soaring
violins, and
a wall of sound ... rising violins are a code for a love song.

Rahman turned it all upside down, she explained.

The first thing he did was to take the orchestral introduction
and
completely get rid of it. Cueing a scene from the Tamil film
Gentleman (Rahman's Tamil compositions were not overlooked
during the
evening), she demonstrated how Rahman brought in one instrument
at a
time, creating musical tension. To cheers and shouts from the
audience, Sarrazin moved on to musical scenes from Rahman's
scores
that have become icons themselves: Mani Ratnam's Roja (the witty
Rukmani Rukmani), Bombay (Tu Hi Re), the Hindi version of
Yuva and
Dil Se (Chhaiyya Chhaiyya); Tehzeeb and Saathiya.

He often puts two incongruous styles together that somehow
seem to
work, Sarrazin observed, with a clip from Lagaan's
English/Hindi song
O Re Chori and Sushmita Sen's jittery Shakalaka Baby
(Nayak),
which was one of his hit songs reworked to great effect
in Bombay
   Dreams.

As much as his fans and fellow artists love his music, Rahman is
notorious for taking his time on each project. I have a nice
relationship with all directors, but I drive the producers
crazy, he
joked. Mani [Ratnam] tells me the story that he told me for
Roja, 'I
need five songs, and I need them yesterday.' I was gone for
three
   months.

Working with lyricists, too, has its quirks. Sometimes Gulzar-
sahib
or Javed-sahib will give me just a title. Other times, they
want the
tune first, then they'll give the lyrics.

One of the reasons Roja was such a departure from the style of
music
at the time was the way it was recorded, explained Rahman. At
the
time, there were these huge recording halls, with 50 violins,
he
said. But I was doing commercials in my own studio. When Mani
wanted
me to do the music, I said, 'Let's do it at my place.'

I called my musician friends to come for the session, but at
the last
minute they all ditched me! I think they had all been offered
more
money somewhere that day, he said, laughing along with the
audience.

But my mother said, 'God will provide.' I ended up recording
[the
instrumental version of ]'Choti Si Asha' by myself, on a
keyboard and
sequencer. I thought I'd need to bring in 50 violins, but Mani
said
'No, just be yourself. Follow your instincts.'

Since he got his start writing ad jingles, wasn't it
intimidating to
take on the soundtrack to an entire three-hour film, asked
Sarrazin.
I was terrified in the beginning, replied Rahman. But then I
learned that if I could write a piece of music that was 30

Yup this a lot of funI got some of them+ Hiccups in "Koku Saiva Koku" from Muthu + Birds tweeting in the opening of "Kuluvalilay" from Muthu + Faint wind howling in the opening "Kaatre" song from Rhythm... + Watersounds in the opening "Kaatre" song from Rhythm...also in Karuthamma + Obviously how can one forget the train sounds which were immortalized in "Chaiyya Chaiyya" from Dil se + Crow croaks at the start of "Pettai rap" from KadhalanYou know when I go through this list, it seems that there is this small kid inside Rehman who is always trying to freak out and break away from traditions. [arr] Sir ARR on chanel V

2006-01-20 Thread ashwin
hi guys,
I saw Sir ARR, Prasoon Joshi, Rakeysh Mehra being interviewed
about RDB' music on Chanel V on a prog i think clled Boly V.They
talked about each song and how they happened. Sir ARR said Khalbali
was recorded in London(if i'm correct)in some different language,
Rakeysh Mehra said that they needed a hindi song, so Prasoon Joshi
came up with hindi lyrics. The lyrics of the title track, thodi si
dhool meri, was written by Prasoon Joshi after he'd tea right
after he woke in a morning. He faxed the lyrics too Sir ARR, and Sir
ARR came up with tune, and that evening every1 was humming the tune!!
there r many other things, though i can't remember clearly :-(. Any1
elses seen it?

[arr] my thoughts

2006-01-13 Thread ashwin
hi guyz,
I was wondering, why do we rate Sir ARR's music so highly? Is it
because he has his own style, is it because he has some of the best
artists in the industry with him, or is it something else? It was
then I realised that his music touches my heart. Whenever i listen
to Ae Ajnabee my eyes actually get filled with tears. When I
hear Vande Mataram i feel proud to be an Indian. When i
hear Khalbali i feel like dancing, and Hum hain iss pal yahaan
takes me some place else. He pours his soul into every song he
creates, no album other than Water can be the best example for it.
Sir ARR has changed my outlook towards life. I consider myself
priviledged to share a planet, in the vastness of the space, and an
epoch, in the immensity of the time with a genius called A R Rahman.
Long live Sir A R Rahman.

ash

[arr] Re: Anyone want to laugh?

2006-01-12 Thread ashwin
hi!!
ok u do have a point there, but just try dancing to a song
like Kehna hai Kya. It's not that Sir ARR is more keen to do
westernised music, but he has to make a song that suits the situation
in the movie. He himself said he hasn't sone any romantic movie for a
while and that's y he coudln't compose romantic tracks like in Taal
or Dil Se. About the lyrics, well, the same answer the song demanded
those kinda lyrics. I mean y do we conviniently forget the track Hum
hain iss pal yahaan? that was a romantic track 'coz the movie
demanded itt, It was sheer melody, gr8 lyrics and it was a hit. It's
when Sir ARR takes some more conventional romantc cinema, the ppl
will stop criticizing his music. And also let's not assume RDB's
music isn't doing well, it's been clmbing charts and after the movie
is released i think it'll reach the top.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

This guy may not be well-regarded in some other forum,
but I have to agree with a couple of his points:

  1) He has to give more time to create melodious
  music instread of this
rap and western tren. We want Jiya Jale, Kehna Hai
  Kya over Khalbali
  type of songs.
Absolutely. I am sick of hearing blaze or someone
rapping over the songs. Paatshaala and Khalbali and
songs like that really pull it down. Even the title
song is a disappointment. When Daler Mehendi harped on
and on about how he sang the entire song in 5 minutes,
our suspicions should have been raised. The sad part
is that Rahman himself seems to have taken just
another 5 minutes to create the magic of the song
after he has the singers recorded. The melody number
Tum Bin Bataye has some promising instrumentation but
seems too cliched and tries too hard to be a melody
number. I like the organ which sounds like a chorus
chanting during the verses, but the rest of the song
 is just meh.

  2) He has to take well know renowned singers to make
  his songs more
meaningfull. He has some vaugue thinking that only
  music directors are
powerfull and singers are non entity. Both md and
  singers have
contribution to make. When you take unknown singers
  you are actually
letting people not to buy your albums.
I wouldn't agree with this. The more reknown singers
in this album are Daler Mehendi and Lata Mangeshkar
and they were the weakest singers on the album. The
newer voices are really better. And none of them tried
to use an anglisized accent like Shaan in his
Mohabbat hai Mirchi song. I just cant stand that.

  3) He has to tell his lyricists to write something
  which people can
understand not something like Pathshala or Dakka
  laga bukka.
I felt the same thing. The lyrics of Paatshaala
sounded too much like those badly dubbed songs from
his Prabhu Deva era. If the album's claim to the
charts is this song, I really dont have much hope for
it's success. But Koon Chala and even the lyrics of
the title song are pretty neat. And Lalkaar has good
lyrics too. It's just the supposedly chartbusters like
Paatshaala that have cheesy, if not enjoyable, lyrics.

  4) Dont do period films. He is himself saying he is
  done with it but
  again taking assignments for it.
Well, besides Akbar Jodha and possibly Buddha, I cant
think of any other period films he is signed up for.
Maybe the mirage that is Mahabharatha. But seriously
it doesn't make a difference. He can really create
great period music like Iruvar and 1947. Right now,
it's his contemparary work that seems to be suffering,
 like RDB and Anbae Aayuriye.

He has to correct the above otherwise none of his
  album going to reach
the top 10. Except Swades and Yuva none of the last
  9 albums even
reached 5 lakhs unit sell. For ARR album usually it
  picks in West and
South. But now West has also rejected it.
I really hope the JoK rocks. I dont have much hope
with Shivaji, cos though Shankar albums become hits
(which, I agree, Rahman really needs badly), he seems
to get the worst out of his music directors. Indian,
Jeans and Mudalvan were really weak Rahman albums with
Boys just rising a little above these. And Aniyan is
possibly Harris Jayaraj's worst album. Pity, cos he is
 amazing too.

So, at the risk of not being highly regarded with this
group, I have to agree with this guy on a couple of
 points.
