   Friends,

I have been seeing some of the mails since Endhiran music has been

There have been good, bad as well as outright ugly emails. This had me
 thinking,
who are we as fans, what role do we have and since we are in a group,
 is there a
decorum we need to follow ? Do we just allow all opinions or do we try
 to always
be appreciative. I do not know all the answers, but this set me across
 a thought
process which I wanted to pen down here.

Since this is a AR fna group, what is the dictionary definition of a
 fan ?
   (reproduced from m-w.com)

   Main Entry: 3fan
   Function: noun
   Etymology: probably short for fanatic
   Date: 1682
1 : an enthusiastic devotee (as of a sport or a performing art) usually
 as a
   spectator
2 : an ardent admirer or enthusiast (as of a celebrity or a
   pursuit) science-fiction fans

If we take this definition, we are more or less (most of us)
 enthusiastic
devotees/admirers or enthusiasts of AR, right ? And to enlarge this, we
 should
be admirers of his entire body of work or his body of work over the
 total
duration. Now, this does not mean we have to admire every song or album
 that he
has ever churned out. At the very least this means that we need to have
 a
context of the man, his music and his entire body of work. We need to
 be
sensitive to the fact that the music is an input of many people like
 the
director of the movie, producer, context of the movie, scene, emotion
 etc.

Are we really fans of AR or his music, if we just react to every song
 and album
as a standalone piece of work ? Isnt that primarily a function of our
 like or
dislike ? What has AR and his music got to do with our like or dislike
 ? Let me
give the example of food - I love avakai (kind of pickle in andhra). If
 I feed
it to my american friend, telling him it is the best thing in the
 world, he will
run away ! Now, most of my american friends enjoy steaks (beef), I can
 never
ever eat one ! Does this mean avakai or beef is good or bad ?
 Absolutely no, it
is just a function of my like/dislike, my upbringing, my culture etc.

Now, what does one do if you dont enjoy a certain AR album or song ? If
 we are
just reacting to our like/dislike at that point in time, then we will
 praise the
song we like and rip the song we dont like. Infact what is happening is
 the
individual is just reacting to his/her like/dislike, AR or the song has
 nothing
to do with it. This will happen for any song or any musician they will
 hear. But
if you are really a fan, you will go with a positive intent to enjoy
 the song,
because you know the musician and his large body of work and know that
 you can
expect quality stuff. You are patient, you invest more energy as you
 are a fan
and take all possible efforts to not miss the quality music, you have
experienced in the past. It is possible that you might still not like
 the music.
I have not liked many of AR's songs or albums. Many times it is also a
 function
of how I am feeling at the time. I might be neck deep in work issues
 and not
find the effort to enjoy the music. Or I might be going through some
 personal
issues and not be in the right frame of mind to enjoy AR's music at
 that point

 like it.

There are certain experiences in life that change you as a person and
help you grow into a better individual. For me, these defining
experiences happened during those years that I was a student of AR
 Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory.

As I look back on that journey that has evolved me into making music
my life and profession I feel KMMC happened a little late in my life
but I strongly feel it couldn't have come at a more right moment than
this. I had a keen interest in music since childhood, listening along
with my grandfather to his thousands of carnatic collections including
M.Balamuralikrishna, Thyagaraja, Ramadas, and many Annamayya
Keerthanas and instrumentals. I recall composing rough tunes for fun,
even before I started learning music formally. But it wasn’t until AR
Rahman happened, that my passion for music grew beyond words. I became
a devout fan of Rahman Sir ever since Bombay had released. I remember
skipping my school continuously to go to the theatre where Bombay was
being played just to listen to the music and the background scores.
And with each of his releases after that, his music became a daily
 fuel for me.

I had completed my Engineering degree in Chennai and was working a
mundane software job. Of course, my body was there, but my ears, mind
and thoughts were just tunes, melodies, rhythm and one man- AR Rahman.
So when I heard news that Rahman Sir was going to open his own music
school here in Chennai, which offers courses in western classical
music, various areas of music technology, instruments, and vocals, I
thought to myself, “If I wanted to give my passion for music a chance
to grow and give a chance to live my dream-job as a composer, THIS was
it.” And what better opportunity to learn at an institution developed
by a man who I worshipped and looked up to for so many years. So
without hesitation I applied for an audition. Now I wasn’t at all sure
I would get in and did not even tell my family or anyone else about
applying to the school. I thought to myself by auditioning I would at
least catch a glimpse of the school and studio, and if lucky catch a
glimpse of Rahman Sir. So I was super surprised and was just in utter
disbelief when I got that call of acceptance and my family was even
more shocked when I told them that I am going to resign my job and
join KMMC. So here I was literally on cloud 9, about to begin a
journey that I had only dreamt of all these years.

In KMMC I took western classical vocals and composition as a major
with a prior knowledge in carnatic vocals and keyboard. As soon as I
entered the conservatory compound on the first day, I could just feel
the aura of positive energy all around. The school had almost like a
homely and soothing atmosphere with wooden floors and furniture,
accented with warm curtains, large middle-eastern rugs, a beautiful
grand piano and a picture of Rahman sir's father in the main reception
area. More than this it was my fellow classmates from all corners of
the world, and the amazing faculty that made those years the most
 memorable.

Moreover, being part of KMMC I saw Rahman Sir in a whole different
light, and my respect and devotion towards him grew to infinite
lengths. During the first week he came and interacted with us in
person and asked us our ambitions and goals. I still remember when I
asked Sir at that time to hum a few lines of New York Nagaram, what he
said in response will forever stay with me. He said. Guys don't stick
 only onto New York

Re: [arr] Endhiran - Initial Reactions - Mixed Feelings

2010-08-01 Thread sunder s
Guys,

ARR has done so many genre of music, if you want melody there are huge
collections in his whole set of composition, classic, hindustani, fusion,
rap etc etc. There are albums which contains mixture of these genre of
music, some having same genre, sangamam is purely classical, boys, enthiran
are purely western, sivaji mixture of both... so depending on what director
asks arr delivers them, so dont compare music of one album with another,
that doesn't make sense. If songs are like sivaji then people would say
songs are same like sivaji, nothing new, if it is not like sivaji we say i
expected something like sivaji

All I would say for those who doesn't like enthiran, take a break go and
listen arr's old albums and hear enthiran, you will feel the difference.
Still you are not satisfied, go and hear other music director's music, this
will really help.

that reminiscent of Don Davis/Navras?), the African vocals in Kilimanjaro,
the bizarre, saccharine classical section in Chitti Dance. I can't listen to

[arr] Song growing - Is it due to music or Lyrics

2010-05-19 Thread sunder s
Hi Everyone,

This question was running through my mind after for quite long time and
ravaan has created more confusions. Initially I had the feeling that since
the new music is new to us, the arrangements of the music is new to our
brain which takes time to grow on us. When ravaan released, it took time to
grow on me, and when i was fully into ravaan , ravanan got released. Since
the only difference in ravanan is only lyrics I didnt like it when i heard
first time. Now I like ravanan more than ravan. Now I am back to square one.

Song growing is due to music or lyrics. Some one clarify.

2010-05-17 Thread sunder s
I feel it would have been better if arr didn't include the rap part into
this song, i feel the mood of the song is getting disturbed by the rap part
even in sruthi's portion. wht u guys say?

On Sun, May 16, 2010 at 2:54 AM, satish_srini satish_sr...@yahoo.comwrote:

The Tamil was of a very high standard and I initially wondered how I was
going to do it, but thankfully it has come out well. This was how A.R.
Rahman described his experience of working with the anthem for the World
Classical Tamil Conference which was released on Saturday.

Apparently, the tune for the anthem came to him immediately, but production
was quite another matter. It took two to two-and-a-half months, but we were
working with a large crew – almost 70 singers, Rahman, dapper in a rich
reddish-brown kurtha with an embroidered panel running down the front, told
reporters on the eve of the function to release the anthem.

All of us together worked on the anthem – There was TMS [T.M.
Soundararajan], Yuvan [Shankar Raja], Shruti Hassan, P.Sushila…(to name a
few). Basically, I have been busy in Hollywood and also touring. Therefore I
was working on a tight schedule and was available only for two or three
days, so people who could come then joined us, he said to a question on how
the singers were chosen. A new verse on Kamban and Avvaiyar was added almost
when the composing was over, and had to be incorporated into the final cut.

TMS begins with Pirapokkum Ella Uyirkkum, the first lines of the anthem
composed by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi. Some of the other top playback
artistes featuring in the anthem include Harini, Hariharan, Benny Dayal,
Srinivas, Vijay Jesudas, Naresh Iyer. Rahman's nephew G.V.Prakash and sister
Rehana have also joined the ensemble.

The thing about this anthem, Rahman says, is that it also features singers
who have distinguished themselves in other genres of music such as Carnatic
(Aruna Sayeeram, Bombay Jaishree, Nithyashree and Soumya), folk, Sufi
(M.Y.Abdul Ghani, Khajamoideen, S.Sabumoideen), and even rap (Blaaze).
Another key aspect is that three generations of singers have participated.

Responding to a complaint that the words in his songs were often drowned
out by the instruments, he says, I think you will hear the words in this
song. In fact we have kept the instruments to a minimum so that the words
are clear. The traditional Tamil nagaswaram and tavil blend melodiously
with the guitar and drums, even as the carnatic notes wind seamlessly with
 the rap.

And what are his favourite lines from the anthem? For some one who added a
line in Tamil in his Oscars acceptance speech, the answer was predictable:
Semmozhiyaana Tamizh mozhiyaam, the line that runs right through as the
 chorus.

Hello friends,

I have made an instrumental version for the song - Munbe Vaa from the movie
Jillendru Oru Kadhal (please correct me for the spelling as i don't know Tamil).

This is one of my favorite song from the ARR's Tamil vertical. Well this is the
first time I have done a instrumental of a tamil song. I have just added a
intro part and have done little tweaking towards the ending part. The original
song is so melodious and that is the reason i have not experimented much in
this instrumental. I hope u all like it. Do send me your comments. Thanks.

Please download it from any of the below link:

4shared Link:
http://www.4shared. com/dir/7667141/ fdda5ac/sharing. html

There is some error coming on Mediafire while uploading. So as soon as it gets
rectified, I'll upload it on Mediafire on post the link soon.

Regards,
Aakash Shah

Sujatha is also good but her renditions are limited. Sujata cant much come out
of her creativity like anuradha did her vocals. Its a fact anuradha learnt both
carnatic hindustani for most of years under some best gurus. This helps her
to reach that complicated brigaas vocal patterns. Thats where rahman give
freedom to singers choose the best from them with his gadgets. Else :) by
collecting their creativity, rahman stealing all credits owing to singers
instrumentalists. People who are not used to classical music will be thinking
all these suggested by rahman which is not so. In all the cases of creative
part of that extra
vocals, full marks go only to the singers which is not much known to the minds
of commons. Thai mannay vannakkam is also excellent  rare to see rahman shouts
vande mataram in middle. He looks casual doing these. thanks 4 videos.

Hi,

I was looking through my old VHS tapes, and chanced upon this video which I
recorded when I was a kid! I was so excited to see this again after about 12
years! And, of course, I wanted to share my excitement and happiness with
everyone here - in the arrahmanfans Yahoo group!! I've converted from the video
from VHS to digital format and have uploaded it youtube.

(If you find the audio/video quality to be poor it is because it is a 12 year
old video extracted from an old and dilapidated VHS tape!!!   Please excuse!
:P )

About the event:
This was during Independence Day Celebrations in 1997 or 1998 (I'm not sure!!).
A huge set, which was a replica of Andaman Cellular Jail, was erected at the
Marina in Chennai, which served as a backdrop.

A.R.Rahman performed 4 songs -Vande Mataram-Revival, Thamiha Thamizha (bit),
Bombay Theme Music and Maa Tujhe Salaam. Singers Sujatha Mohan, Anuradha
Sriram, Flautist Naveen performed in this show.

another nice sad number is Solvayo Solai Kili from Alli Arjuna by SPB
Swarnalatha. It stuck thru youtube clip just posted. same raga in Colours
album [now late Sri.Kunnakudi Vaithyanathan (violin) with Rahman
(arrangement)  zakir hussain (tabla)]. Rahman didn't give much in this raga,
one of reasons may be :(  it is one of maestro Ilayaraja's favorite who has
given varied expressions in this raga.

Hai all,
This news came in India today.

She's got music in her genes. And by her own admission, she's
literally grown up in A.R. Rahman's company.

But what's special about Sana, the 18-year-old daughter of lyricist
Mehboob, is that after Usha Khanna, she's probably the only woman
music director.

I've been touring with A.R. Rahman on his international shows since
I was 14, says Sana, who has trained in Western Classical Piano from
the Trinity College of London.

I am listening Sakarakartti and truly enjoying it (though not
understanding a single word). This is my first ever non-Hindi album as
I am not from India and don't understand Tamil, Telagu etc. However it
was a fantastic experience to give it a try and I hardly felt any
difference because afterall it is our boss whose music is not bound by
any boundaries, language or whatsoever. I am really loving Taxi taxi
and Marudhaani songs and also I miss you da. ARR rocked as always.
Elay is the weakest on the album. Chinnamma and Naan epoudhu are not
new to me though I am really impressed how well these songs are
transformed with the new lyrics, especially Naan epoudhu.

Okay now to the point, would you guys guide me what are ARR's best
non-hindi albums (which have not already been used/dubbed in Hindi)
which I should listen after Sakarakartti? I will really appreciate it.

Pardon my interference. I disagree they dont listen to A.R. songs. When they
listen to it you wont be knowing. Excluding the fanatics of A.R., other reasons
constitute, India is mostly of middle-class. They are thrifty. They are
satisfied with online players mp3 downloads. With it they have the option
of selective songs / repeated listenings. On the contrary if you think the high
earning people are spending category which is not true. They are the ones who
are conscious of money when comes to spending. To my experience as a counter
sales person, people come out of qualis / honda cars with attracting perfumes
master cards. They enquire with us about new releases. Browse all the rows of
CDs including that of A.R.'s new ones, spend an hour and exit without buying
anything. They update themselves what is the latest with shops for shopping
atmosphere. But actually getting on with the Internet. Secondly for others who
are not aware of  A..R.s
new releases, time personal interest does matter for them in these things to
see it secondary which is one of the realities.

To praise one and ridicule another is not a done thing. Besides one should give

yes vithur, our boss teaches us many things in our life through his interviews.
There is a saying in tamil called Atchaya pathiram, which means the content
never reduces at all from the vessel how many ever times u try to empty the
same. Similarly Rahman also has such a quality, when u try to dig more and more
from him you will get more and more in life. There is lot more to learn from
him.
Vithur, as you said we should stop fighting. First of all this is not a group,
its full of various individuals. We should all have a common thinking and we
should have a common goal, we should try to help each other in that process.
Only then we can called as a group, this is what our boss wants too. lets try
to understand the basic idea(if not the core) of what rahman has offered to
this world both in terms of music and life and follow the same.

Kamal Hassan woos A R Rahman
Hi Friends ... Check this... :-)

Kamal Hassan finally signs music maestro AR Rahman for his home production,
Marmayogi . It is going to be Kamal Hassan's next venture after Dashavtaram .
Kamal himself will co-produce, direct and act in this film.

Rahman was in Mumbai for a short visit, when he revealed his next venture. A
smiling Rahman in a black suit discloses, It's strange, but Kamal and I have
never worked together. We stay in the same city, work in the same industry, but
we have never got an opportunity to work together.. But this is an interesting
project and I will be working on the tracks as soon as I reach Chennai.

However there were several rumours doing the rounds about Rahman turning into a
film producer. This question actually got the composer to burst out laughing.
He retorts, Me and produce films? When will I compose music if I am dealing
with production hassles? Even I have heard that I have approached Aamir Khan
and Kamal Hassan to direct a film for me. Well, it is utter rubbish. I am not
trying my hands at screenplay either. I will leave that to the experts.

It can be recalled that before this, Kamal Hassan's film was backed by Bharat
Bala Production along with Adlabs. Though Marmayogi will be made in Hindi it
will be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu.

Re: Multiple emotions in single song of ARR??? (Re: [arr] Re: A ditty to make aditi smile)

2008-06-04 Thread Sunder
There are quite a few songs with  multiple emotions, one that i remember
is Daun song from meenaxi where the song is actually a happy song, and suddenly
it shifts to a very painful feeling for a minute or so then shifts back to its
original mood, thats really bindblowing.
For me Meenaxi is one of the best composition of our boss till date. In my
mobile Potters village is the ring tone for many years :-)

For your question if ARR has switched emotions, you can find out that
In Lamahon ke daman mein from JA is a very good example.

right up there with ARR SEL, who compose for the situation rather
 than impose item music.

could you please elaborate what is imposing an item music?

Mayya Mayya and Bidi were composed for two
totally different situations . Bidi suited the situation in the film to
the T. One would expect a nautanki number to be loud .

I don't subscribe to this situation bit. ARR has also composed songs
which were loud and were good. (examaple? many, his earlier youth songs,
like muqabla)

VB has also composed songs which were subdued and contemplative (Machis
- Pani Pani re)

so both MDs are capable of giving both and all types of songs.. As such,
Omkara didn't really have a nautanki situation. It was VB who wisely
composed a song having nautanki mahaul so the visuals were made in a
nautanki situation.

NOw, as for as mayya is concerned, it was exactly the similar situaion
-- a professional girl dancing to public, in which various MDs have
given Jumma Chumma de de which was loud, and Tezab's
ek-do-teen-chaar- paanch-chh which was deafeningly loud. and we all know
how popular these went to become.

But is was probably the first time when such a subdued, almost at a
whispering level, song was composed for such a public dance situation.
ARR went against the established norms and still came out with a gem,
a winner, a piece of art.

I was just highlighting that in the same year, two songs composed by ARR
and VB show that ARR's creation is miles ahead of VB's creation.

I didn't say Bidi was bad song. I did mention that Bidi was a good song
and I like that one also a lot. I like VB also, though far-second to ARR.

OK, to give credit to VB, let me say that even ARR has never given a
song in the genre of VB's Machis - Chhod aaye ham teri galiyaan. That
song was complex in the sense that this single song had three songs
basically -- a chorus mukdha, then solo stanzas, and then there is a
sudden switch to a sad version at Dil Dard Ka Tukda Hai. And the
freshness, the spontaneity conveyed by the song, it was just superb and
ARR has not given any song like this.
--

Back to ARR, which are ARR's song in which there is change of emotions
in between? Not two different songs or different versions of same song
separately shot in a movie, but a same, single continuous song showing
two or more emotions, like VB's above song, say sadness and happiness,
or anger and calm, or comedy and seriousness? Frankly, I am not able to
come up with any single song of ARR that has switched emotions on-the-fly.

To clarify, there was the song from movie Black Mail MD: KalyanJi
AnandJi, naina mere rang bhare which starts with a happy note and in
the middle switches to sad mode at kajra mera kajra.

another one is Sharabi (one of the rare best of Bappi Lahiri) song
Intehaa ho gayi intzaar ki which starts with a sad, lost-hope note but
when Jayaprada comes it becomes all fun-and-dance at Lo main aa gai.

So, has ARR given any such song(s) or has he always remained on single
emotional track?

or more aptly, hear every note

One of the greatest enjoyments for me being an ARR fan is to try and
anticipate what he will come up with next in his creative universe.
To try and delve into his mind and uncover some of the creative
elements of his music making process and to see how he continually
evolves as a composer is just absolutely fascinating. New
soundsnew musical concepts .so wish I could just visit his mind
one night in one of his creative meditations as he comes up with
original tunes. How does he put the pieces together to create a song?
Why did he choose this sound over the other? Why this particular
song structure? So many questions... .so much curiosity... . We
are so privaleged to recipients of his gifts that keep on giving after
they've been given!

Subject: [arr] THE ART OF LISTENING

'THE ART OF LISTENING'

A: Mr Krishnamurti, last time we were speaking together, we were going into
beauty, and just as we came to the end of our conversation the question of
seeing and its relation to the transformation of man which is not dependent on
knowledge or time, was something we promised ourselves we would take up next
time we could come together.
K: Sir, what is seeing, and what is listening, and what is learning? I
think the three are related to each other: learning, hearing and seeing. What
is seeing, perceiving? Do we actually see, or do we see through a screen
darkly? A screen of prejudice, a screen of our idiosyncracies, experiences, our
wishes, pleasures, fears, and obviously our images about that which we see and
about ourselves? So we have this screen after screen between us and the object
of perception. So do we ever see the thing at all? Or is it the seeing is
coloured by our knowledge, mechanical, experience, and so on and so on, or our
images which we have about that thing, or the beliefs in which the mind is
conditioned, and therefore prevents the seeing, or the memories which the mind
has cultivated prevents the seeing? So seeing may not take place at all. And is
it possible for the mind not to have these images, conclusions, beliefs,
memories, prejudices, fears, and without
having those screens just to look? I think this becomes very important because
when there is a seeing of the thing which I am talking about, when there is a
seeing you can't help but acting. There is no question of postponement.
 A: Or succession.
 K: Succession.
 A: Or interval.
K: Because when action is based on a belief, a conclusion, an idea, then
that action is time-binding. And that action will inevitably bring conflict and
so on, regrets and all the rest of it. So it becomes very important to find out
what it is to see, to perceive. What it is to hear. Do I ever hear? When one is
married, as a wife or a husband, or a girl or a boy, do I ever hear her or him?
Or I hear her, him, through the image I have built about her or him? Through
the screen of irritations, screen of annoyance, domination, you know all that,
the dreadful things that come in relationship. So do I ever hear directly what
you say, without translating, without transforming it, without twisting it? Do
I ever hear a bird cry, or a child weep, or a man crying in pain? You follow,
sir? Do I ever hear anything?
A: In a conversation we had about a year ago, I was very struck by
something you said which I regard, for myself, personally, immensely valuable.
You said that hearing was doing nothing to stop, or interfere with seeing.
Hearing is doing nothing to stop seeing. That is very remarkable because in
conversation the notion of hearing is regarded an intimately associated with
command. We will say, won't we, now hear me, hear me out. And the person thinks
that they have to lean forward in the sense of do something voluntarily.
 K: Quite, quite.
A: It's as though they have to screw themselves up into some sort of
agonized twist here. Not only to please the one who is insisting that they are
not hearing, but to get up some hearing on their own.
K: Quite. So does a human being, Y or X, listen at all? And what takes
place when I do listen? Listen in the sense without any interference, without
any interpretation, conclusion, like and dislike, you know all that takes
place, what happens when I actually listen? Sir, look, we said just now, we
cannot possibly understand what beauty is if we don't understand suffering,
passion. You hear that statement, what does the mind do? It draws a conclusion.

A: Yes, of course it does. Because the idea doesn't conform to nature and
other people have other ideas and they want to get theirs embodied. Now we are

Hi Guys

What a concert it was. Really Mindblowing, the selection of songs and the way
it was executed, everything was so perfect. Still I couldn't believe that I was
there in the show. Most of the time I was busy in capturing the songs in my
cam, there are around 2.2 GB of video tht I captured which I will try to upload
as soon as possible. As many have told what exactly has happened in the
concert, I have only one thing to say, My life is fulfilled after seeing him
perform live on stage. The highlight is the the Kwaja mere kwaja song, I saw a
round light ring(ooli vattam) behind his head when he sang that song, what a
devotion he showed. Thats why god has given him such a musical gift to him.

As Lakki said, we were in touch but due to the crowd we were unable to meet.
Hope we all will meet soon.

By the way if any of you guys took some good pictures send it across to me and
the group as I concentrated only on videos and forgot to take pictures :-)

Take care

Subject: [arr] Sharjah Concert in detail

(sorry – long mail. Some interesting tidbits towards the end)

Exhilarating experience, as expected. All this waiting didn't go wasted.
Concert started on the dot at 8.30 pm (10 pm IST) and ended at 12. Three and a
half hours of sheer bliss!

Fans
A few of us met up at the concert: Fameeb and friends; Mehroof; Riyaz; Aravind;
Vishnu and friend; Sreejith and sister; Sunil; myself. Was also in touch
through the concert with Ganesh; Siad; Sunder; and later Anand. (Sanjay – would
have texted you if you had posted your number earlier.) Was wonderful getting
to meet you all; we have a good number of people now; lets try and keep the
spirit alive..

Concert
The professionalism was evident through out and also the hard work that would
have gone in to stick to the timings and the flow to be smooth. The absence of
a Compere didn't seem to bother anyone as there was hardly any gap between the
songs. It showed the amazing team work as everything was going like clock work.
Blaaze came in a few times just for the very essentials like to set the feel at
the beginning and later to introduce the musicians. ARR also did his part to
interact with the audience. He highlighted that this was the 10th anniversary
of his first concert in Dubai and that in itself is a great achievement for a
performer like him. He thanked everyone tremendously at the end for the support
and said mischievously that he hoped to do this again after 5 years – the grin
on his face showed that he anticipated the no, we want sooner, we want more
shouts..

The organizers also seemed to have done well, though at times they seemed a bit
confused. Except for a few glitches like opening the gates one hour late (6
instead of 5) and slight lack of coordination with Security personnel,
everything seemed set. Snacks, drinks, etc were available and they also printed
out booklets with some of the singers introductions, etc which was useful..

Apart from not having a compere, there are a couple of other differences that
caught my attention in comparison to the previous Dubai concert. First is the
extent to which ARR's live vocals have improved – almost to the point of being
totally flawless now! I can only imagine the hours of sadhakam / practice he
would have put in the past years to reach where he's now. Truly amazing!
Second is the absence of dancers for some key danceable songs like Chaiyya
Chaiyya. True to his word (he mentioned this during the press conference), he
has ensured that the focus would in fact be on the singing. For those songs
where dancers were involved, the choreography was good and so were some of the
visual effects. I am however slightly on the fence regarding the solo dancer in
blue for the 'Tere bina' song – still trying to figure out if I liked the idea
or not!

Songs
Hindi dominated slightly but there was a good mix of Tamil as well. Karthik and
Benny stood out for their lively and high energy performances. Hariharan and
Blaaze interacted well with the audience. Nithi gave some beautiful renditions
and certainly Chitra, Naresh and the others as well. Our man's singing was the
surprise package of them all – excellent vocals and unbelievable presence on
stage. He even took it a step further after the 'humma humma' song making the
audience sing the humma part. Soo not him but it was fun to watch him
interacting so nicely with the audience!

Following are the songs sung with time it started and the singers:
08:40 JAGE HAI (Guru) à Chitra, ARR
08.42 KHALBALI (RDB) à ARR
08:48 KADHAL ROJAVE / ROJA JANEMAN (Roja) à Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam
08:53 BARSO RE (Guru) à Neethi Mohan, Mohamed Aslam
08:58 LOSE CONTROL (RDB) à Blaaze, Mohamed Aslam, Naresh Iyer

09:00 3 minutes with the Guitarist (anyone know his name?)

has to do something with the personality. Even Cat Stevens had that

JS: I think you've got that kind of a healing voice.

ARR: I am not sure If I even have a voice! Mine is not that kind of
voice. I can't go deeper than a particular limit..

JS: I feel that your voice is mesmerizing.

K: I think John Denver's voice is soothing.

ARR: That's the kind of voice I am looking for.. Anyone has it here?
It's not that other voices are not special, but I am just missing that
one special quality. There are other extraordinary singers like him
(Points at Krish) here. His next film Chakravarthy will be coming
soon.

T: When is that movie coming up?

ARR: (Laughs) Only today, did the last song get complete.

T: They have been making the film for a long. All the excitement just
dries off if it takes forever to release.

ARR: Probably because they are using too many animated sequences in
the movie. But if the film is good, the wait does not matter.

T: Are you going to work for the film, Chennaiyil Oru Mazhai Kaalam?

ARR: I am not sure about the title but discussions are on with Gautham.

if you guys want to listen to how uniquely ARR mixed bass guitar,
listen to margazhi thingal (sangamam). i dont think neone has ever
mixed a bass guitar for a carnatic song. sounds terrific. latest case
- valayapatti (the use of bass guitar once again for the carnatic
aalaps) tremendously intelligent arrangement, just goes to show that
bass guitar is a very powerful accompaniment for carnatic song (like a
violin).

Bass guitar arrangements in ARR songs has been one of the things

Keith Peters also has never forgotten to thank ARR in any of his

Yes i totally agree with you that today all the other music directors are
exactly a xerox of ARR (infact color xerox), so it is difficult to maintain the
orginality. For that reason ARR has to do lot of hardwork, infact he is doing
more than his 100%.

I don't understand one thing, if he tries something new you people say ARR is
lost his magic, and he doesn't do that you people say its resembles like his
previous compositions bla bla... comon guys grow up...

For that matter i cried once when i was listening to Lukka chuppi from rang de
basanti and yeh jo des hei tear in some other occation

One important thing what chord mentioned in his earlier mail. When rahman came
he introduced a new type of music to the people in india. His style was totally
diffrent from the contemporary music directors that time .So everything he
delievred that time was something people got to experince diffrent from others.
and then we know , he set that trend and somany people followed his school. That
time people could listen to a song and tell that its that new guy's song .
While today its gone.its tough to diffrentiate for a non-rahman fan :-).

apart from this aspect as chord said , for me rahman's standard of music
composition
has improved a lot from those days.I feel rahman can easily deliver a
raakkozhi randum muzhichirukku or pennalla pennalla even now but it won't
stand apart . But rahman with what he was that time i don't expect a yeh jo
des hei tera or khalbali from him.

I would say ,that time he could just deliver the gifted talent he got and it
got easily accepted and stood apart. where as today, he is putting immense hard
work on top of his gifts to stand apart.

I used to cry when i listen to Porale ponnuthayi from Karithamma

I want the same magic back in Rahman music.I dont care Subash k jha

You mentioned hardly any songs unliked in Rahman's earlier days.
Be

Whenever ARR travels abroad for concerts, he never puts his accordion or some
of his instruments into the Main Baggage center. He carries them along with his
hand baggage, and practises wherever he find it suitable to. Though carrying
them would be highly painful all the time, he doesn;t mind that , and enjoys

[arr] ARR's favourite singers

Hi guys,

I know there are quite a few stat-gurus in this group, here is a small question
for you. Who is the favourite male singer and favourite female singer for ARR,
and how many songs did they sing for him, what are all the songs, and is there
any song that both his male and female favourite singers sang togather. I guess
one way to get his favourite singer is to find out which singer has sung more
songs under his compostion.

Hi shafi, Vithur

I totally agree upon your views but the question how come he is able to
maintain the same dedication, sinceirity for the past two decades since he came
to the industry with so many critics, so many problems another one of this
caliber is Sachin tendulkar. For me their life is like meditation. They are
very focused and their mind is as clear as water. Their life is like a water
drop on lotus leaf, take life as it comes. I guess thats the secret of their

I dont know whether somebody mentioned this earlier. But ARR liked 2 songs out
of the 4 songs presented by the individual teams so much that he could not
decide as to which song to be selected as judges' choice. He suggested that he
can mix both these songs and make a new song. Unbelievably, he immediately
jumped to the keyboard and mixed the songs so wonderfully that the entire
audience went berserk.

It is only a person who has amazing musical sense and immense devotion to music
who can listen to 2 songs and immediately do such a thing. All those who feel
that ARR can be compared to other composers in the industry has to watch this
episode and understand (as we have understood long back) that there is one and
only one ARR and he has no competition.

Thanks for this interesting subject, Gops!! This could be very very long one...

I'll start with my favorite, Roja.

1. Opening sequence... Wasim Khan's arrest... what a masterpiece that is...

2. When the Kashmir is first shown in the movie... early morning time,
soldier's having parade n' suddenly bomb blast happens... fantastic music
piece there... ends with another bomb blast...

3. After Ye Haseen Vadiyaan... Roja disappears husband searches for her...
awesome piano piece...

4. Rishi Kumar's kidnapping scene...

5. Terrorist Camp intro... ends with Rishi Kumar's closeup... another
masterpiece

6. Rishi Kumar tries to escape scene...

7. Rocking bass guitar piece when Military raids the [empty] terrorist camp...

8. Rishi Kumar escapes (actually the girl sets him free) all the terrorists
chase after him on the huge icy mountains... another masterpiece

Well, that's all for now... will post more later...

Sunder Bhai

I agree TOTALLY ! Rahman is long overdue for a classical and
critically hit album in Tamil. We have seen and heard quite a few
commercially correct albums recently. However, when we talk about
Rahman's classics, we always come upto to his pre-2000 movies.and
stop there !

I miss Thota Thota / Nathiye Nathiye / Vellai Pookkal / Nan
Padum Sandam / Raasathi / Pacchi Nirame kind of melodious songs.

Surprised about the 100% Tamil song selection ? Even though I am a
non-Tamil speaking person, I rate his Tamil songs HIGHEST amongst all
songs for the melody. When the Tamil movie songs were taken as
something standard, he dared to do different and he did it superbly !

Rahman has a strong foundation in Carnatic music and together with
his expertise in Western classical and rhythm, I guess, he is
definitely planning something which pleases the critics.

Yes, haven't heard NAVIN's flute in recent movies either.. .

Best regards
Dinesh Vaidya

My take on two boons :

1. I will ask God to give two more A.R.R.s. (Two Clones.., mmm no.., Perfectly
three ARRs of same calibre. Equally we have three ARRs without any single
difference in talents and appearances between them)

2. I will ask ARR to send one ARR to London to work for English/Internation al
projects. One ARR to stay in Tamil Nadu permanently to compose for more south
indian film projects. Third ARR to stay in Bombay to work in Bollywood other
North Indian projects if offered.

P.S.: If one ARR does this much Social Service for Poverty, TB, Cancer, Mental
Disability etc. with his music, Imagine how much charity work, Three ARRs can
give to this world through their Rocking music ? These two boons ultimately
fulfill all kinds of fans with quality of music plus quantity? WHat you say ?

[arr] To all Music reviewers

2007-10-27 Thread Sunder
Hi

ARR songs are at its best when a new album is released. When SOK released
everyone said it is not the best of rahman, and sivaji released they said SOK
is far better, now when ATM released they say sivaji is far better. I dont know
how people dont understand that is that rahman creates music freshly with new
ideas with each and every album and each and every song. Thats why when you
hear it fresh for the first time you dont undertand that, thereby you easily
say it is not good.

I would like someone of the reviwers to comeup with a new review of Roja -
Rahman's first film
Sivaji- Rahman's latest film(since ATM is relatively new, still it takes time
to grow on you, i chose sivaji).

If you compare the reviews of current review (roja, and sivaji) and the reviews
that was posted when the albums were released you can see a complete contrast.

[arr] Two boons

2007-10-23 Thread Sunder
Hi Guys

Consider two scenarios

1. If god appears and says you to ask for a boon(wish), what will you ask.
2. If our god(ARR) comes to you and ask for a boon what will you ask.

Sure each one have different wish. Like to know how each fan think.

Hi Guys,

This would be my answer perhaps !!!

1. If God Appears, I will ask and pray to him to grant immortality to our Guru
Rahman

2. If ARR comes and gives me a boon, I would want to be associated with him for
my lifetime, in Music by any means possible.

A master piece from ARR... like his voice a lot n the music is really
rocking will be a good intro song n the best for Vijay ARR's voice is
unmatched especially whn the song is about to end.

rating: 9.5/10

Ponmagal vandaal

A brilliant remix from ARR i feel this is better than Thottal Poo
malarum the rap was really nice overall the beats by ARR is nice n cant
be matched with any other song... a real treat to hear...

Rating:10/10

Mee marilyn manroe...

A good song with western blend... lyrics are the highlight of this song... the
locations must be an added advantage too

Rating: 9/10

Valayapathi. ...

Looked very ordinary when the promo was heard... but was really brilliant to
hear the full song... i had goose bumps whn i heard this song. naresh iyer
as usual has rocked.

Rating: 9.5/10

Kelamal

Well i was not happy with this song in the promo but now on repeated hearing i
like it except the gals voice in the starting everything is fine i din
like the voice whn she sings ketu rasitha padal... other than that i like the
lyrics n the beats...

Rating: 8/10

Maduraiku... .

A song that is totally away from usual ARR style but a good music n will
surely be one of the chart busters many will start luving this song after
the video is released am sure theatre will rock for this song

rating: 9/10

Overall i wud rate the album 9.2/10 now i know why ARR has this much fan
following... .. a really convincing album it has all chances to be the top
album of the year...
