If a composition doesn’t appeal to him, the 91-year-old doyen won’t mince

“What’s this ‘Vandey Matram’ that he (Rahman) sang?,” he

And ‘Jai ho’ may have helped AR Rehman scale new heights, but the song
isn’t even among his best numbers in the eyes of Manna Dey. “What’s
there in ‘Jai Ho’?” he asks

[arr] Re: Best Singer award

2010-02-12 Thread balajirajagopal
...i remember some reviewer posing the question

Does a sing become very good because ARR sings it or does he sing the best song
in the album!!! :

Either ways, it is really a pity he hasnt been nominated much for the best male
singer, particularly because songs like Dil Se and Rehna Tu are nothing short
of modern day classics!! I guess it will take a Grammy award for the best male
English singer to get the Indian awards jury to start recognising his vocal
talents!!! But then...if ARR does get a grammy for singing, you bet the
entire chorus in India would be - but it is not his best, he has song far
better songs in Hindi/Tamil!

Cheers,
Balaji

Nope to my understanding he's never won a Best Singer's award. He rarely gets
nominated too for the same.. And that's an irony as most of the songs he has

Therefore it always has been an irony when he does not get nominated but
some1 else does from the same album!!
Its happened b4.. and its happening again..

[arr] We are the world - ARR

2010-02-02 Thread balajirajagopal
Guys - If ARR indeed is involved in the We are the world project for the
Haiti victims, it is, very very good and surprisingly not much of discussion
seems to be on this! It means ARR has not just arrived but has been accepted
by the main stream American Music industry and that for an Indian musician is
like not just scaling Mt Everest but actually landing on the moon!!!

The other day while aimlessly browsing the tamil channels, I chanced upon an ad
on Vasanth TV (dont ask me but yes, there is a channel by this name!!) in which

also had Rashid Ali crooning Aditi. Sounded fresh and interesting. Hope this

[arr] Blue - worth a watch!

2009-10-18 Thread balajirajagopal
Hi - Caught up on Blue yday. Went there with zero expectations, given the rash
of adverse reviews on the Net. But I must say I was pleasantly surprised. While
it surely wasnt a great movie, it surely wasnt the pits that the reviews
were saying and most definitely not a 1 1/2 star that Rajeev Masand had given
it. And yes..i surely loved the BG score. I mean...in an action movie, the BG
had to be loud and fast. It cudnt be poignant and soft!! And the movie was not
boring, the stunts were decent and the photography/sound effects were top class.

Guys - Those of you who havent yet watched the movie, do check it out. It
surely is no worse that some of the hits of recent times!!

[arr] Re: ARR is very weak in selecting projects! What u think?

2009-10-17 Thread balajirajagopal
My personal view is that this is a very convenient and unfair comment to
make. Comeon, how many of you sincerely thought that JTYJN would be a monster
hit or that Delhi 6 would be disaster - and that too when the movie was being
made? It is all a question of how a director visualises the movie, storyline
etc when he talks to ARR. ARR must obviously have had some faith in the
Director/storyline/Producer when he signed those movies. He cannot be faulted
that they failed. Yes...one thing that ARR could look at is signing the big
banners. Having said that even a Yashraj films had a series of bloopers last
year. So, what does he do? He cannot be insisting that Aamir khan signs him for
every film or that Shankar or Mani Rathinam make a movie every 6 months (And
yes...pls do not forget that notwithstanding of its excellent music, Dil Se,
Thiruda Thiruda or even Iruvar were big flops!!

My request - Pls do a movie with Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra and Farhan Akhtar.
If not nothing else, at least the chances of the movie being a hit is higher
than for the other directors!!!

Balaji

sees Rahman offering his massiest sound in quite some time, but – as always
  – with enough cues that denote his going the extra step, even within the
commercial limitations. Rehnuma is perhaps the best example – starting with
a compelling bluesy base, it takes on a dazzling James Bond theme tone
  soon!
Aaj dil and Fiqrana are instantly likeable – the ones that expose a
surprising layer every day; they tread conventional patterns, but still
  hold
free-flowing phrases that one unravels rather reluctantly, given our need
for symmetry! Bhoola tujhe is sedentary and routine, despite the neat
orchestral nuances that Rahman adds thoughtfully. Yaar mila tha is Rahman
doing a full-on masala track; but he does deviate, remarkably, in the
antara! As for Chiggy Wiggy, this could have been any recent composer in
Hindi and from that perspective it is rather distracting – but the track,
particularly Sonu Nigam's vivacious taming-of-Kylie bhangra portion, is
addictive! The unexpected winner of this soundtrack is the hyper-energetic
Punjabi blast in the Blue Theme, complete with a bouncy orchestration,
incredible vocals by 6 singers and that minor, but startling `Bi-loo' call!
Blue is not path-breaking; but it is a thoroughly enjoyable, beautifully
  orchestrated soundtrack.

[arr] We are ARR's biggest detractors

2009-09-04 Thread balajirajagopal
Hi guys - After going through the plethora of postings of last month, I couldnt
help but think that more than anyone else, we as the so called die hard fans of
ARR are possibly his biggest detractors. And why do I say so? Read on...

1) If ARR composes a massy kind of music, we immediately slaughter it
saying...the music is too Pritam-ish or Himesh-ish or even VS-ish and not
befitting ARR

2) If ARR composes a very classy kind of music, the other set of yahoo group
members start berating him saying, it is too classy to be appreciated.

3) If ARR composes very good music for a flop film, we say he shouldnt be
composing for new directors but only established ones...if he composes for
established directors, we say he should be more open to working with new
directors!

4) If ARR uses established singers like Alka Yagnik, we say he should be using
the new talent. And if he uses new talent, we immediately start feeling
concerned that the likes of Hariharan, Udit N, Sonu N are being ignored!

5) If ARR doesnt win an award, we rip the judges apart. If he wins the award,
we immediately say he should have won the award for some other movie and not
the current one which is way below his standards!!

6) Till the teaser trailers of an ARR release comes, we keep talking about the
album. Once the trailers come, we start moaning the music (that too even
without hearing the full song on good acoustics) saying it is crap and not ARR
standard. And then what do we do? Immediately start talking of his next
release!!

Comeon guys...what should the poor guy do? Should he stop composing?

Cheers,
Balaji

Thats what made him say once

You people listen to some promos in some cheap laptop headphones and start
reviewing the songs as bad. There is so much of hard work which goes behind
 a song.

Lets pls wait for the full album to get released. Lets listen to it for a

[arr] Re: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s next : Paanch Kaurav

2009-06-06 Thread balajirajagopal
so, will the kauravas too battle it out on the streets of Delhi??? Frankly,
I feel ROM feels his biggest claim to fame is his having studied at DU!! The
earlier he comes out of his Delhi fixation, the better for him

‘I don’t get the point of intervals’ | Article on ROPM

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was in the city for just a few hours. But he didn’t
take much time to get nostalgic.

 “Chennai
is not new to me. I have literally lived here for the last five years.
I came here to meet AR Rahman to discuss music for my films. I was also
present in the city when Rang De Basanti (RDB) and Delhi-6 were
 screened,” he says.

Rakeysh is upbeat about the city’s Mozart.
“I have worked with AR Rahman in two of my films and I feel at home
with him. After he won the Oscars, we talked for half an hour! I also
met him as soon as he returned to the country. I heard that a huge
crowd gathered at the airport to receive him. Guess I missed that
scene,” he chuckles. He is equally effusive about our Ulaga Nayagan, “I
saw Dashavathar with Kamal Haasan. He has the most expressive face,”
but adds, “I was disappointed I couldn’t see ‘actor’ Kamal in it.”

His recent movie, Delhi-6, received a mixed response at the box office.
And, Rakeysh accepts that with a smile. “I’m both happy and heart
broken with the results of Delhi-6. Certain aspects of the story worked
 well. The songs
have almost become anthems. But, I wasn’t able to
tell what was running on my mind and transcribe the thoughts on to the
screen. Well, it’s all a part of life. I’m a story teller. There is no
excitement in telling the same story again and again. A filmmaker
learns the most while he’s making a film. After making RDB and Delhi-6,
I have gained more knowledge. I discovered why I make a film,” he says.

 Though
his movies are commercial (read song and dance) in nature, Rakeysh is
tired of them. “It will look idiotic if a cop bursts into a song in
between the story. So, I weaved songs with the script in RDB and
Delhi-6. But, I don’t get the point of having intervals. I was forced
to have an interval in my films for economic reasons. I don’t think
attention spans are decreasing, at least, not in the entertainment
 business,” he says.

Rakeysh believes that the market will expand
only if a filmmaker tries out new things. “Audiences are humans. It’s
ok to make them feel uncomfortable because their sensitivity will make
us experiment. Unless we give them things on a new platter, they won’t
know which they like the most,” he says.

Rakeysh reveals that he is currently working on a few scripts. “My
next film, Paanch Kaurav, will be an adventure film, based on
mythology. The film will be set 100 years ago and I’m sure it will be
better than Lord of the Rings or any other film in that genre. It will
be a fantastical film,” he says.

And, it doesn’t stop with that. “I’m writing the script for Bhairavi,”
he says and adds that he plans to make a film on the romance between
Mirza and Sahibaan, which is likely to have his Delhi-6 pair, Abhishek
Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor, in the lead.

 But he’s more excited
about producing films for young directors. “I’m planning to produce
movies with young talents. My first movie will go on the floors this
September,” he says and adds, “I want to work with newcomers. You never
thought you would get a captain from Ranchi!”

 Rakeysh is also
quite clear about his formula for making his films. “When I make
movies, it’s more like a personal experience. It has to challenge me,
excite me. Slumdog Millionaire is one of my favourite. How do we expand
our cinema? That’s the challenge Slumdog... throws at us. If I can
achieve that, I’m a perfect filmmaker. After all, I have just arrived,”
 he signs off.

[arr] JAI HO @ NO 5 In British Charts

2009-04-04 Thread balajirajagopal
Good news...Jai ho by ARR/PCD is one of the highest climbers this week in the
British Singles charts. It has climbed an incredible 15 places up from No 20
last week to reach No 5 this week. Let's see whether there is enough momentum
to carry it further up the charts. Keeping fingers crossed.

Okay..the subject matter was more to get your attention :)See the attached
link, ARR feat PCD version of Jai Ho has zoomed in at # 20 in the UK Top of the

would mean a canned live performancebut still, I guess it is a first for
ARR as he makes his entry into the UK charts! Way to go ARR...lets see how much
further up the song travels in the charts...

[arr] Re: Do u want any change in A R 's music- Ur suggestions

2009-03-07 Thread balajirajagopal
Well...here goes my 2 cents but not just his music but also his projects...

1) While even big banners like Karan Johar/Yashraj etc do give big duds, at
least the marketing of the music is done full throttle (unlike some of ARR's
best compositions which have bitten the dust due to lack of publicity (Ada) or
atrocious scripts (Sakarrakati). So, ARR must score music at least for 2 big
projects a year (minus the Mani Rathnam and Shankar which he will anyways be
doing)

2) Not sure whether you guys will agree with me but I see a big difference in
the new singers introduced by ARR in say...the early 1990s and now. While
singers like Sujatha, Hariharan, Shankar M and others have gone on to achieve
great laurels, the current bunch of singers (with the major exception of
Karthik) like Madhushree, Naresh Iyer, Javed Ali etc have somehow been able to
do well only under ARR ie they hardly have any big songs from the other MDs.
Can one venture out to say that perhaps ARR should be more careful when he
gives chances to the new singers?

3) Would luv to see ARR collaborate more with artistes like Bryan Adams,
Youssou N Dour (like someone already suggested), Elton John etc. How about a
compilation of English songs with different artistes on one album? A sure shot
winner!

4) Again as someone said, ARR pls do a bit more of Rock music. I really cudnt
help but think how Rock on would have been under ARR's baton!

5) Notwithstanding whatever others say and I am sure I am gonna be absolutely
crucified here, I still feel that ARR's songs are definitely a lot lot better
than his BGM. He probably will have to look a lot more deeply into his BGM
programming

6) ARR Sir - Udit can just not pronounce tamil words. Why are u still giving
him chances in tamil? Pls ensure that pronounciation is given paramount
importance in your compositions (along with the lyrics which at times seem to
be drowned in the music)

7) I know this sounds crazy...but I would luv to hear ARR sing songs for other
MDs also. More than anything, I am sure it will be different experience for him
as well. Lets say...a ARR singing for Vishal Shekhar or a SEL. I am sure this
will encourage the other MDs to up their ante too as they will know ARR is not
going to sing unless the song is absolutely fantastic..

Anyways...just my thoughts

Cheers!
Balaji

He has to drastically improve the clarity and pronunciation of the words
in his songs. Several words are getting bogged down in louder music in
several of his songs. In several of his songs, the beauty of lyrics
doesn't get highlighted because of this problem. In several songs, I

That brings me to a 60 year old story. Lata ji had a humble upbringing
in a traditional Marathi family where they spoke Marathi, not even
Hindi, though he learned Hindi. But she was quite poor in Urdu
 pronunciation.

The producer/ Director Mehboob Khan (Mother India) was very particular
about language usage in his films and some small bit person filled him
wrong information that Lata's pronunciation is very poor, urdu even
worse or nil. Mehboob Khan told MD Naushad saab not to get Lata sing
 for his films.

They were doing probably Andaz (Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Dileep Kumar) then
(1949). Naushad saab knew Lata a little by that time and could sense her
melodious potential. So, Naushad saab retorted that music is his
department and producer/ director must not interfere in it.

The tussle went worsening and entire crew soon got divided in two sides
 fueling the fued.

Anyway. Naushad was also a force to reckon with at that Mehboob Khan
realized that he couldn't just kick Naushad out on this point, so he
told naushad to go ahead with her for one song and if he finds any
single mistake in her pronunciation in that song, then Naushad wouldn't
use her ever after for his films.

Naushad took the challenge. He taught and taught and taught Lata ji. Not
just him but several other MDs are known to have helped in her development.

Everybody was apprehensive, and the first song was recorded. There was
not a single mistake in her pronunciation in that song, Mehboob Khan
also liked the song and her voice and that founded a lasting association
 beneficial for all.

If you hear the songs of 40-60, you would find such a clear
pronunciation of each word, each letter, each sound that just can't be
 heard nowadays.

ARR is known to give a lot of freedom to his singers, but it seems that
he needs to invest Naushad saab like

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra thinks out of the box and it's more than
evident now. First AKS, then RANG DE BASANTI, now DELHI 6. A two-
 liner
of the story may give you an impression that it's similar to UTV's
earlier outing SWADES, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker: An
American
 of
Indian origin returns to his roots and decides to stay back in
 India.
But DELHI 6 bites more than it can chew.

Set in old Delhi, the screenplay [Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Prasoon
Joshi, Kamlesh Pandey] takes its own sweet time to come to the
 point.
In fact, the entire first half is dedicated to the sundry
characters
in the bylanes of old Delhi, where several stories run parallel
with
the main plot... The two warring brothers [Om Puri, Pawan
Malhotra]
and the wall that divides the two; the daughter of the house
[Sonam
Kapoor] aspires to be an 'Indian Idol' contestant; a moneylender's
[Prem Chopra] wife has an illicit relationship with one of his
lecherous debtors [Cyrus Sahukar]; an 'untouchable' [Divya Dutta]
makes more sense than the so-called thekedaars of samaj; a friend
of
the family [Rishi Kapoor] has still not forgotten his first love
[Tanvi Azmi]. Oh yes, there's also a 'Kaala Bandar' who spreads
 havoc
in the locality. Really, Rakeysh tries to pack in multiple
stories
 in
  those 2.18 hours.

But, alas, the problem is that barring a few individualistic
sequences, you don't carry the film home. The film is engaging in
 bits
and spurts. Worse, it tends to get monotonous, preachy and boring
 and
the end is so bizarre, you actually want to ask the writers, 'Hey
  guys, you okay?'

Let's cut a long story short: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra misses the
bus
  this time.

DELHI 6 tells the story of a young American boy Roshan [Abhishek
Bachchan] of Indian origin, who comes to India for the first
time,
 to
drop his ailing grandmother [Waheeda Rehman]. She wants to retire
 and
spend the last leg of her life back home; dissolving into the
soil
 she
  was born in.

In America, having led a very western lifestyle, Roshan is not
familiar with the sites and smells, the food and culture, the
 religion
and beliefs, this huge melting pot that India is. He believes that
Dadi had left her family and loved ones back in America, only to
realize that how wrong he was.

The warmth and affection of the neighbourhood embraces him with
open
arms. Amidst all this he meets the beautiful Bittu [Sonam
Kapoor],
 who
wants to break free from the typical Indian social structure, to
 whom
Roshan is destined to lose his heart.

That Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is an accomplished storyteller is
 evident
in several individualistic scenes. Note the scene when Vijay Raaz
slaps Abhishek and Abhishek slaps him back. Also, portions in the
second hour, when a Baba [Akhilendra Mishra] triggers off the
Mandir-Masjid talk and divides the two communities, is very well
structured. The sequences are disturbing and the writers and
 director
succeed in exposing the fickle-minded people residing in the
 locality.

But the screenplay isn't foolproof. The romantic track is the
 weakest
link in the enterprise. The love story falls flat. Also, the
ending
 is
so abstract that an average moviegoer would find it difficult to
comprehend what the actual culmination is. The sequence in the
end,
when Amitabh and Abhishek have a conversation, looks weird. In
fact,

a final set of nominees for the best BGM. Instead, a week before the
awards, the technical awards winners are announced and best BGM is
one of the awards in this list.

As for the best playback male, ARR is not in the final list of
nominees, which is

Farhan Aktha - Socha Hai (Rock on)
KK - Khuda Jaane (Bachna Ae Haseeno)
KK - Zara si dil mein (Jannat)
Rashid Ali - Kabhi Kabhi Aditi (JTYJN)
Sonu Nigam - Inn Lamhon ke (JA)
Sukhwinder Singh - Haule Haule (Rab ne bana di jodi)

P.S--- Full list of the various nomination categories with the

Guys - Dont you think it is time we cut the chain of mails on how so
and so perceived SdM and whether it was right or wrong? Personally, I
found SdM absolutely over rated. But that is not the question since
whether I like it or you like it is not what gets a movie an oscar
nomination. There are so many things going into it including (and
this is most important) how the critics sitting in Hollywood look at
the movie. For instance ARR has indeniably done scores for movies far
far better than SdM (if someone is objecting to that, all I can say
isu must be living under a rock!) but this (SdM) is the movie
that has showcased ARR to a western audience like no other movie
before.

Priyan has given his views on the movie. If you agree to him, well
and good...if you dont, even better. This is a free world where
everyone has a right to a view. You can have a different view from
others but to expect others too to echo your own views is, at least
according to me, absolutely jeuvenile and immature! Comeon this is a
ARR fan group not a SdM fan group!!

Sorry if I have hurt anyone of you. Lets talk about the music of D6
which is awesome and in a class of its own instead of bothering about
whether IR wished ARR or whether Priyan is correct in his views about
SdM!!

2008 has been a groovy year for 'Modern Day Mozart' with his
stupendous musicals of quirky genres. Yeah, set at the historic
backdrops of Ancient India, Rahman spelled his trenchant score
for 'Jodha Akbar' directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar. Everyone had a
penchant for his assorted tunes of high-toned orchestral voices and
percussions for 'Azeem †O- Shaan- Shehanshah' and a mesmerizing
Sufi-type number 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja'. Musical tune for 'Jashn-E-
Bahaara' would never fade from anyone's senses….

Perhaps, hop-skipping on a contrastive grounds for 'Jaane Ya Tu
Jaanena' with cool peppy numbers, all the songs happened to be ducky
ones for young lads and missies. In fact 'Pappu Can't Dance Saala'
has been used for a promo song by Indian Electoral Commission
as 'Pappu can't vote Saala'.

Poignant melodies of 'Tu Hi Meri Dosth' and 'Dil Ka Rishta' from
Subash Ghai's Yuvvraaj have been rendered with top-notching feats.

Aamir Khan's 'Ghajini' fetched more expectations with Rahman's
tunes turning to be chartbusters. 'Guzarish', 'Bekha' and what not,
the entire album has been swaying across far-flung corners of the
globe.

Finally, his Big Year ends with Hollywood's 'Slumdog Millionaire'
directed by Danny Boyle. Fetching best accolades, A.R Rahman won
Satellite Awards by International Press Academy. Also he has been
nominated for 'Golden Globe Awards' for the category of original
score.

Well 2009, it's gonna be a great exciting year for Rahman as he
gears up to spin with his magnum opus' of Mani Rathnam's
bilingual 'Raavana' and 'Ashokavanam', Rajnikanth-Aishwarya Rai
starrer 'Endhiran †The Robot', Kamal Haasan's untitled project and
his Hollywood movie titled '19 Steps', Pawan Kalyan's Telugu
movie 'Puli' directed by SJ Suryah. Of course, he has more plans for
his Music School of 'KM Music Conservatory' that he launched in March
2009.

IndiaGlitz conveys its heartiest wishes for a bright, happy and
colorful New Year that he may spin with his splendiferous tunes in
forthcoming 365days.

I think the answer is in the interview itself where Sonu says he had
recorded the song first with dummy lyrics and later when the actual
song was to be recorded, he wasnt available. As a matter of showing
respect to him, ARR retained the original humming of Sonu!

[arr] Interview of ARR in Mail Today

2008-12-21 Thread balajirajagopal
There was an interview with ARR in today's Mail Today magazine (Delhi
edition). Hadnt even heard of this paper before!!! It was a full two
page interview by someone named Sharin Bhatti. As always, some of
inclusions in the interview/writing was factually incorrect like saying
ARR next year is doing RKS's London Dreams MR's remake of Lajjo with
Aamir and Kareena. And suprisingly no mention of Blue (which according
to me will be the JTYJN ie a darkhorse of 2009). I am too lazy to sit
and write the whole interview, however some of the few vignettes of the
interview were (All the below is according to ARR)

1) Worst song - Que Sera Sera ie he thought he could have done more
justice to the song and that it became a hit due to Madhuri Dixit and
Prabhu Deva

2) Favourite song - Khwaja Mere Khwaja

3) Favourite instrument - Guitar

4) Favourite singer - Hariharan

5) Like to be reborn as - ARR. Also, he very clealry said he chose to
convert to Islam out of choice and not because he was ashamed to being
a Hindu

There was a para on how he bonded well with Aamir who apart from Mani
Rathnam (suprisingly no mention of Shankar here but I dare say to a
North Indian, Shankar is just another South Indian director!), the only
other person ARR is willing to trust is Aamir Khan. He also talked
about how he enjoys bonding with Rakesysh Mehra and Aashutosh
Gowariker. And very surprisingly, he considers Deepa Mehta's trilogy of
Earth, Fire and Water as the biggest visual accompaniments to his
score. The interview also has a bit of dope on the season's current
flavour ie SdM. There are a couple of nice pics - one with Nelson
Mandela and the other with his wife.

There was a short para by Mani Rathnam and Shekhar Kapur on ARR. A very
interesting remark made by Mani Rathnam in this column was that ARR
always keeps his prayer beads near the keys of his piano whenever he is
composing.

If someone can scan the interview and put it up, it will be great! But
on the whole, it was one of those usual interviews without anything
pathbreaking...

And such type of attitude here I find sickening.

Sonu is a polite person, he doesn't make odd comments. ARR has used
him

Sonu
is capable and hardworking, and he has every right to say if he

A source close to Rahman reveals, ìRahman works only at night

because
Yashji owing to his health could only work in the day. He also
insisted that Rahman should record only at the YashRaj studios
and
even stay in the studios during the recording.î Apparently,
Rahman
agreed to all this but what transpired after this is what
angered
Rahman. When it came to Rahman's fee, Yashji offered him an
extremely paltry sum and when Rahman protested Yashji
reportedly
said, ìYou should consider yourself lucky that you are getting
to
compose music for a Yash Chopra film. This is a privilege and
not

is a
legend himself. He excused himself from the meeting and never
returned. Later Rahman asked his office to tell Yashji that
Rahman
   wasn't interested in his project.

Yashji tried getting in touch with Rahman but the latter has
been
avoiding him. With little choice left, one last heard that
Yashji

ARR Interview to Sun TV on Sakkarakatti ( Absolutely rocking one )

My heartfelt thanks to Sun TV for organizing this wonderful
interview, and
also for deputing a logical and a reasonable interviewer to
interview the
Meastro. He asked logical questions and it was a great treat.

 INTRODUCTION

The Interviewer starts off by saying this

When some one went and asked Swami Vivekanada, as to who is the
person who
is always successful in life ?. for which he replied, Whenever
some one
demeans you, be true to yourself. When some one praises you, don
get swayed.
That is the hall mark of a true successful man. I keep remembering
one man
's name always, when I remember these words from Vivenakanda. A man
with lot
of awards, achievement, rising number of success figures, and
surrounded by
praises always, but still unchanged by the same smile, the same
simple
laugh, and sweet speech. The man whom I have been referring to, is
not an
alien born in some corner of the world. He is our own native, a
person born
on the soils of Tamil Nadu, a person who is bringing fame to each
and every
Tamilian across the globe, a wonderful brother and is none other
than the
 Musical Storm A.R. Rahman.

Come , lets go and meet him.

Q :- There are so many Film Directors waiting for you, to make
films, only
if you compose music for them. In your success endeavours so far,
Sakkarakatti has also been listed now. What do you feel about the
success of
this film music ? How did you accept this project and accepted the
film ?

AR :- I have earlier worked with Kalaipuli Dhanu with Kizhakku
Cheemayile.
He was the person, who introduced the Director Krishna of Jillenu
Oru
Kaadhal to me. At that time, he was telling me that his son would
be doing a
film, and asked if I could do the music for the film. I was busy at
that
time. He told, he is ready to wait for any amount of time. Usually,
people
say like that, but after three months, they would come and ask for
a tune
saying that the heroine is leaving somewhere etc .

But they waited for 1.5 years with patience. Whenever I used to get
time, I
used to give them a song. So, its not my success, but its their
success that
they waited patiently. It's a success to the trust that they had in
me.
Prabhu is also a very patient guy, and he has religuosly spent
time for
making the song good, with all graphics.

( A new version of Taxi Taxi was shown…. Just AWESOME ….)

Q :- You were talking about working with Dhanu Sir. And this is
your third
film with him. What would you like to say about the human being
Dhanu ?

Ar :- Everyone has his own quality, and the quality in Dhanu Sir,
is that he
uses his talent to the utmost extent. Its only certain producers,
who spend
so much of energy in highlighting their films to such extent.

Q :- Normally, when people remember the word ' Taxi, they think of
a means
of conveyance. But now, people are associating it with the song from
Sakkarakatti. Has this been specially or purposefully laid for
attracting
the youngsters, or is it comes natural to you ?

AR :- Every three years, there is a change in the trend. The trend
has been
changing since the 90s. 92 it was different; 95 was different and
98 was
different….. Now the trend is towards reggae style, Spanish, etc …
So, we
thought of getting all those styles in the song. Actually, this was
a last
thought that we got. This song was composed in the fag end.
Originally, the
song was of a different tune , like a bhangra type. We had to
modify the
same, and in the last moment, a magic happened. We wanted a song
like an
 engine.

 Na. Muthukumar speaks

In Sakkarakatti, I have written three songs. Elay, Taxi taxi , I
Miss U da.
. Today, the CDs of Sakkarakatti have been a great hit amongst the
public.
Specifically, the song Taxi Taxi has got the rank No. 1 amongst the
previous
20 years of Tamil Cinema. Rahman Sir wanted friendship to be
described not
in a negative manner, but still highlighting the negativity in a
positive
manner, and gave us the initial lyrics as Taxi taxi, nanbaa Nee
oru
Ilavasa taxi. If you write like this, it would be of great fun
also.

 Kalaprabu speaks

The Hero of the film SK is Shantanu Bhagyaraj. Vedika and Ishitha
are the
two heroines. As I had told before in many interviews, Rahman Sir
has
given us six boons and not merely six songs….

 Blazeee speaks

It was really a blessing to be part of this song, when Mr. Rahman
gave the
idea about this song. Everyone would feel like dancing when you
listen the
groove. That itself is a magic, in the way, the song was started
and all.
When I wrote the English lyrics for this, Kalaprabhu

Ghatam Karthik Talks – Part 2

Do you play only the Ghatam ?

GK :- I specialize only the Ghatam. I also do the Konnakol ( Sort
of a
dyeing art). Very tight in your rhythm, and very fast in your lips..

I did one special thing for one song for Rahman. I played the
chalangai. The
song Innisai Alapadaye from Varalaaru. The song if full of
complicated
rhythms. Myself and Mr. D.A. Srinivas ( Mridangam Seenu), played .
After we
played , Rahman decided and said, I cant ask any timing player to
put a
chalangai for this. You have to do it by yourself. He was very very
correct. It was wonderful of him to think that lines. Not only as a
musician, but also from the dancer 's angle, the footwork has to
gel with
the mridangam. It was a very tough song, and we had north Indian
bols in
that. South Indian variety, and we really freaked out. Rahman told,
us to do
whatver we thought of doing. He gave us so much of freedom, and we
played it
cut loose. It came out very well, and that was one of the very
popular songs
 in that film.

Actually, for percussionists, Rahman is a very favorite person.
What is the
 reason behind it ?

GK :- Basically, he enjoys rhythm. He is a very good fan of
rhythm. Leave
alone the capabilities, ( as a lot has to be spoken about that
aspect). He
is able to enjoy a Carnatic rhythm, a folk rhythm, African beat.

He is able to take out the best out of the rhythm. He is able to
bring out
the best in every artist. That is his basic trick. He knows what to
get from
whom. As he is able to enjoy the rhythms himself, he is able to
find out ,
what would satisfy the people 's taste. He knows, which rhythm to
put to be
put to which song, to suit the correct situation, and that's why all
percussionists have lot of respect and adoration for Rahman.

*Most Liked Concert of GK *

Each concert, we try to give our best. It was a Sivarathri day, and
we
played our Heartbeat Concert in Kashi. The stage was put on the
Ganges, on
the topsy side of two boats. Litreally, Ganges is flowing under us.
It was a
fear mixed happiness sort of a situation. Thanks to Lord Shiva,
that we
 could play better.

  Re- Recording Experience

I have played for Re- recording also. In the film Boys, in all the
scenes,
when Actor Sendhil appears and says, Information is wealth, the
comedy
track was played with the Ghatam. It was a wonderful experience,
and I loved
 playing it.

Sivaji was an all time hit of Rahman. As a musician, I liked the
Background
Score in the scene, when the fight happens in the Music Shop (
Vaada vaada
Vayil beeda piece). The usage of all Musical instruments for a
fight
sequence is Rahman's creativity. The usage of a Musical Shop for
the fight

[arr] Re: Abbas Wants to do #39; Boys #39; in Hindi ... Is it true ??

2008-07-07 Thread balajirajagopal
I feel Abbas definitely did justice to the way the songs were
positioned in the movie ie just because all the songs didnt find a
place in the movie doesnt mean they were badly picturised. And the
end of the day, people want to see is a well made movie and not a
Chitrahaar. Having said that, I feel if Abbas did remake Boys it will
be great and my choice for Sidharth's role would be Shahid Kapur!
Such great songs Boys had and in my view most of the songs of Boys
had a Pan India feel to it. So, I dont think much of tweaking is
required.

And pls no dubbing of Boys movie into Hindi. If done, it will suffer
the same fate as most of the other dubbed movies ie no patronage!

Cheers !

[arr] Re: One of ARR's most underrated and best soundtracks

2008-06-21 Thread balajirajagopal
Guys - Dont know how many will agree with me but my take on this is
that compared to ARR's strike rate of good music, the other MD's are
much lower (my figure would be that easily 80% of ARR's releases would
fall under the good music category. The exceptions would be one off
like Parasuram etc). It's just that due to either non or low publicity
of the audios, the sales figures dont come up. All MDs fall a victim to
this but in ARR's case, it seems to be much higher. A recent case in
point would be Ada - wat a CD but unfortunately extremely bad
publicity!! Considering all this, according to me some of ARR's most
under rated tracks would be

1) Tehzeeb - just did not get the praise it deserved particularly for
ARR's efforts in giving Ghazals a different twist!

2) Kabhie na Kabhie - Awesome music - lousy movie and even more
pathetic publicity for the audio/movie

3) Bose - Probably his best in the millenium

Cheers!

[arr] My take on JTYJN

2008-05-21 Thread balajirajagopal
Since practically everyone is posting a review of JTYJN, I thought of
posting one myself...just kidding...not a review but just my view on
the album

CD Packaging - Looks neat and quite youthful. All the fonts were of
the correct size and the colour combo was also quite adequate

Songs - Honestly, I liked all the songs and as someone wrote in one
of the reviews, this is one ARR album that doesnt require multiple
listens to get hooked on. I practically fell in luv with the album
the minute the guitar strings started for kabhi kabhi aditi. In terms
of my order of preference, the best 3 in the album wud be

No 1 - kabhi kabhi aditi - Need one say more? This is an absolute gem
of a song :)

No 2 - Kahin to...- Copy or no copy, this is a brilliant song wit
amazingly catchy loops chorus

No 3 - Pappu cant dance - This is an absolute wonder coz this was one
song that I just didnt like on the promos. Infact, I was telling
Swapnil just this evening that this was a lousy song. But two listens
on my CD Player and I cudnt help but hit the rewind button repeatedly!

All in all - a great album - a must buy!

Cheers!

Mad about Rahman, dil se These fans live and breathe A R
Rahman's

It was the year 1992. The film Roja was released and with
it,
   a new
music sensation blossomed in the Indian film industry,
attracting
   droves of
fans, mesmerized by his melodies. Their chotti si asha is
simply
   to have the
pleasure of listening to A R Rahman's music and perhaps,
watching
   him
perform live, and if they were really lucky, say a few
words to
   the musical
genius in person. Meet the A R Rahman Fans.
What started off as an e-group, set up by Gopal Srinivasan,
a
Bangalore-based consultant, is, today, a veritable database
of
   all things
Rahman. From several media interviews to rare recordings of
his
   tracks and
the inside information on when a new album will be released,
   these die-hard
fans are truly connoisseurs of Rahman's art. The intent
behind
   establishing
this group was straightforward — to use the power of the
internet
   to network
with Rahman's fans around the world so that we could share
the
   joy of
listening to his music. In many ways, it is Rahman himself
who is
responsible for the popularity of this group — his music
and his
   appeal
cutting across barriers. I am guilty of initially under-
   estimating the
global reach of his music — little did we realize that we
would
   have people
from so many countries across the world joining in, says
Gopal
   Srinivasan. And
indeed, today, the e-group has over 13,000 members.
On a rather sultry Sunday evening, a few members of the
group
   in
Bangalore gathered in front of the rose garden in Cubbon
Park to
   talk about
their passion. Quite befitting, considering that for most of
   them, their
love affair with A R Rahman's music began with the film Roja
   (rose), and
like his music, their devotion to his talent has only
increased
   from
strength to strength. Says Kangan Upadhyay, who works in a
   software company,
We heard the songs of Roja before they were officially
released.
   And
although I didn't know the language, I could relate to those
   songs.''
And she gives credit to the music director for her superb
   scores in
her II PU exam. At that time, the music of Alaipayuthe was
   released, and I
kept listening to it all the time while studying. I scored
99% in
   Maths. I
kept humming the songs in my mind even as I was writing the
   paper,'' she
 recalls with excitement.
The way Rahman's compositions revolutionized Indian film
   music is
something the fans immensely respect. He brought in a
whiff of
   freshness,''
says Balaji Rajagopal, a chartered accountant. He brought
to
   Indian films a
sound which was, until then, only heard in jingles,'' says
   Chandrashekhar
Ganesh, a techie. Earlier, viewers would walk
out of the theatre for a smoke when the songs would come on.
   Rahman's
music changed all that,'' says Gomtesh Upadhyay aka Gomzy, a
   techie.
He's even a good singer,'' says Vithun Kumar, a BE student.
   Adds
Shahnawaz Gaffoor, a techie, His music is international.''
Not surprisingly, Rahman's concerts are always a grand
event,
   akin to
international acts performing in India. And these fans
ensure
   they are there
to watch Rahman live. Most of them took off to Chennai
recently,
   when
Rahman performed there for a concert organized by The Times
of
   India. In
fact, it was during the 2005 concert in Bangalore when the
city's
   fans met
each other in person. They volunteered backstage and even
had T-
   shirts

One of the participants Abbas Tyrewala (dialogues Munnabhai MBBS) made
a very pertinent remark on the dearth of good scriptwriters in the
Indian (hindi) movie scene and said just like ARR arrived and gave a
different dimension to music and made ppl go back into the theatres and
listen to the songs, in the similar way one needed a genius script
writer to arrive at the scene (or something like this) Whoever has

also credited to ARR instead of HJ :)

[arr] Re: South Filmfare Awards - ARR

2007-08-06 Thread balajirajagopal
Unlike the regular hindi FF awards, the South FF awards dont have the
kind of 5 final nominations and 1 winner from the same. Just the
winner's name is announed.

And no...ARR didnt perform any song at the awards.

Thanks

[arr] South Filmfare Awards - ARR

2007-08-05 Thread balajirajagopal
All - I had the privilege of attending the South Filmfare awards held
on Saturday, 4th August at Hyderabad. Imagine my pleasure when I
found that I was in the same row as ARR - the only difference being I
was in what was called the Silver class while ARR was in the Gold
class and there was a sort of a barricade between the two classes.
Nevertheless, I had a clear glimpse of him. He was in a black suit
and accompanied by his wife. Actor Vijay was throughout sitting next
to him and in fact, was the one to hand over the best Tamil MD award
to ARR. A couple of ARR related stuff during the awards :-

a) When Shreya Ghoshal won the award for Munbe va, the compere asked
her to sing a couple of lines. You should see her feeling very
nervous and more than once telling on the mike - ARR Sir, I am trying
to sing the song. She then hummed a couple of lines - brilliantly
done, I must say!. No wonder when the giant screen panned to ARR, he
was giving a smile and gently clapping appreciatively once Shreya
finished her two line singing!

b) One of the biggest cheers during the evening (of course, the
biggest cheer was reserved for Chiranjeevi) was when Vijay announed
ARR's name for the award. ARR, surprisingly, made a small speech in
tamil thanking both Krishna (Director SOK) and KS Ravikumar (Director
Varalaaru) for the award, saying the tunes were selected by them).
Considering the venue was Hyderabad, I thought ARR would make his
speech in Tamil.

c) When Devisri Prasad got the award for the best MD in Telugu for
Bommirulu, in his thankyou speech, he made mention of all
the Jambavans like SPB, Yesudas, Susheela etc and finally rounded
off by screaming not to forget the Isaipuyal AR Rahman!!

d) Adhiradee of Sivaji was one of the songs which was danced
tobut must confess it was not a patch on the original
choreographed song!

e) ARR was throughout were calm, composed and with Vijay (were they
discussing something about ATM???). Very dignified was the word that
comes to be immediately.

f) When ARR went to collect his award, the song that was played on
the big screen was New York Nagaram and I must say, with the lovely
sound effects, the song was sounding even more brilliant! However,
actor Vijay while announcing the award was so morose that one felt he
was doing an unwilling chore rather than announcing a popular award.

The awards will be telecast on Suntv. Not sure when though! My take
on the awards - it was boring, utterly unprofessional and not a patch
on the regular FF awards (however, if one considers how ARR's live
rendering during the regular awards was botched up, I guess the South
awards were par for the ocassion!!)

Cheers!
Balaji

[arr] Pogo Award

2006-12-18 Thread balajirajagopal
Hi all - I was just surfing the TV channels on Saturday when I
suddenly saw an award ceremony on Pogo TV. The award was for the best
song of the year - as polled by the kids and the award went to (who
else!!) ARR for Masti ki Paathshaala from RDB. You then saw a beaming
ARR having the award in his hand (offline of course!) and saying that
he was glad that the kids thought this was the song of the year but
then mischievously said that he hoped that the kids dont take the
meaning of the song literally but rather think of Paathshaala more
seriously!!! After the speech was broadcast, the whole audience
clapped very loudly for a few secs...

Cheers!

[arr] Re: New York Nagaram being accused as a lift on itwofs.com - really absurd

2006-11-23 Thread balajirajagopal
Tell you wotto me, New York Nagaram reminded me a lot of the old
Rock band Kiss' superhit I was made for loving you more than any
other song!! Particularly, the opening stanza when ARR goes New York
Nagaram.is almost the same tune as the Kiss song...

[arr] India FM reviews The Rising......my view...

2005-07-17 Thread balajirajagopal
The other day I saw the audio review of The Rising by Joginder
Tuteja of India FM. Apparently, the reviewer was invited for the
audio launch of The Rising and at this launch, visual clips of the
songs were being played, based on which the review was done!!! Can
you beat it? I mean.when do you review an audio album? After
listening to the songs on a good music system for at least a couple
of times, analyse the nuances of all the songs, lyrics etc. And
instead of doing thishere we have a reviewer who has already
passed his verdict by listening/watching the audio visual clips at
the audio launch!! Ridiculous it sounds to me!! All along I thought
only Taran Adarsh was capable of ludicrous analysis but looks like
his brethren at India FM are all capable of doing the same!! While I
do not argue with the right of the reviewer to criticize the
album...still to review and criticize the album just by a single
listen and that too on the big screen at the audio launch is a bit
too much for me to digest!!

Cheers
Balaji

--- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Vijay Iyer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I havent heard The Rising yet. I will go and get my copy today and
its only been 2 or 3 days since its released so im sure more than
half or atleast half of the listeners on this group or worldwide
would not have had a chance to get the album yet - now with the
weekend yes ! a lot more albums will be bought.
The other half who have already had a chance to listen to the
album, I'm sure have not savoured it enough and 2 days is too less a
time to give a verdict on the semantics of the album.
But what disappoints me - and this is a trend im seeing over the
last few years is that the listeners keep harping and harping and
flooding mails with queries about the next release and when it does
happen, a whole flood of emails with ridiculous topics start to
bombard your inbox.
Sample this how would harris have done the rising? how would a
r r have done anniyan? the rising is not good hes lost it, he
produces shit tracks.while im not denying anyone the right to
criticise, all im saying is why wont you guys give it time ? An
artiste like Michael Cretu (Enigma) releases an album every 4
yearsto a layman most of his tracks might sound alike but if you
give it time, you start realising the finer aspects and after years
you still keep rediscovering something new - just like a r r's
songs..Im sure most of the group has not even been done with Bose -
there are just too many finer aspects in that album and 2 days is
all it takes to 'complete' the last rites of 1857 and look forward
to AAh AAh...
The funniest part is when he does commercial tracks, people want
him to focus on something different and now when he does something
different, they want AAh AAh commercial tracks !! Give me a break
folks !!
Lastly, if all of you as just listeners know so much about music -
as claimed and can give a verdict on the songs, arrangments,
singers, lyrics etc, surely a r r with all his knowledge and genius
and experience would know better. You think he would have worked day
and night sitting at his console (siping Redbull !!!) to produce
what you call 'CRAP' ?? You need to ponder..
