Re: System not recognizing my login
Dwayne, It is possible in v7 to do that. Configuring.pdf has this to say on page 311: Authentication-Chaining-Mode: This parameter enables the administrator to use more than one type of authentication on the same system. The values for Authentication-Chaining-Mode are as follows: 0—Use the default behavior as in releases prior to 6.3. 1—Use internal authentication as the primary method; then use external authentication via the AREA plug-in as the secondary method. 2—Use external authentication via the AREA plug-in as the primary method; then use internal authentication as the secondary method. If the Authentication-Chaining-Mode is set to a value of 1 or 2, the Authenticate- Unregistered-Users parameter will be ignored. If the Crossref-Blank-Password parameter is enabled, and Authentication- Chaining-Mode is set to a value of 1 or 2, users who have a blank password in their User record will be permitted to log in to the system without a password (that is, a NULL password). It sounds like a close fit to the behaviour your describing. Recon engine with Linux crashes
Everyone, I need a bit of help, as I am new to Remedy in general. We're running a ARServer 6.3 patch 20 on a Redhat Ent 3 server with 4 procs, and 4 gb of ram. On our DEV machine we're running Oracle 10g (10.0.1.2) and ARsys, plus the midtier. We have CMDB 1.1 patch 3 and we're attempting to Reconcile SMS imports to the Asset Mgmnt application. The problem we run into is that most of our Recon jobs abort with no telling errors written to even the debug level log. Sometimes when we start the recons, there's around 50 meg only free memory on the linux box, by the top command. However, the machine never runs out of pyshical memory, it just jumps up and down alot. Our consultants are saying that this lack of resources when we start the job is the cause of it's death. However, not being an Linux expert, I am not sure 50 megs of free memory is really a lack of resources... ARServerd is the largest process on the box and it's only ever at 500 mb or so of memory. So what gives? Why does the recon engine crash? ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org ARSlist:Where the Answers Are
Indexing in Remedy 6.3
Greetings List! Management has asked me a couple questions regarding Remedy Indexes. Still considering myself an amateur, I gave my best guess as I understood, but they would like to confirm. They would like to know: 1) How exactly does Remedy Indexing work? 2) In 4.5 we had case-insensitive searches. In 6.3, I've not been able to find this. Does it exist? How do we activate it? I tried searching the archives, but I always came up with too little or too much- if anyone knows of past-posts that would help as well, I'd be most grateful! Column Width problem when printing web arr report
ARS 6.3 Windows 2003 Midtier 7 Patch 2 IE 6 Oracle 10g HD 6 We have an .arr report for solutions that our requests can use to print solutions from the web. When they press the Print button on the solutions form from the web, the arr report is displayed in IE. The report shows the solution number, the summary and the details of the solution. You can scroll to the right to see the entire summary and description if they are lengthy and the fields have no carriage return. The problem is column width when printing. When they choose FilePrint in IE, if the solution summary and /or description fields don't have a carriage return or are length they truncate. People on the client use these same solutions. If the solution summary and/or description fields are short enough it is not a problem but frequently they are longer than 30 characters. I've tried changing the report from portrait to landscape and more is captured when printing but is still truncated. We don't want to have to add carriage returns to all the solutions and somehow make sure people add carriage returns at a certains point. I've changed the .arr file field widths but these changes do not show up on the web. I logged into the web config tool and looked at Report Settings. There weren't any settings to check. Changed AR User Preference form for my userid, even though I'm using the web. At the report tab, changed width for reports. This made no difference when on the web. Tried changing the arr report to narrower columns, displaying columns, displaying records, and long fields wrapped. The web ignores these settings. The AL on the print button shows Report Type: AR System, Target: Screen, Operation: Run, Location: Reporting form Name: Name in the Report form Location is New How can I get the solution .arr report on the web to use report column widths in the report or at least fit on the page when printing? ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org ARSlist:Where the Answers Are

Re: Mid Tier Installation 7.0.1 Patch 001 JDK error....
Hugo, I agree. I saw some other messages in this thread where people stated that they were running Tomcat with IIS (or JBoss) but I have found that Mid-Tier runs quite well with Tomcat alone. I am also confused by the SDK vs JDK debate. Some people say SDK is enough while others say you need JDK and Mid-Tier apparently asks for it as well, although I do not remember anymore if it specifically asked for it. I remember that somewhere during the install process, you specify 'Other' if you use neither ServletExec nor IIS and it seems to work. I was using the BMC document about the Apache / Tomcat with Mid-Tier. Again, Apache does not seem to be needed at all to run Tomcat. We specifically tested that and all looked ok. As a matter of fact we didn't see posted date/time differences on email received requests, mid- tier requests, requests through OV - nothing. The only issue was the posted one where the time in the Admin Tool is wrong. Re: DST and consequences
Another point for some 5.x environments. We are running ESP's License Monitor Plus but not with our dev server. Will keep an eye on it if it needs restarts and take into account the impact on stats that it collects. We don't have any automated license juggling based on it to worry about. If we aren't upgraded by Oct/Nov this stuff will raise its head again. My Oracle DBA isn't worried about 9i patching. It looks like the timestamp field types are impacted and there is a timezone table after version 8. The benefit to the hassle of patching everything, involving Unix sysadmin and Oracle DBA and yourself, is being able to put DST to rest as an issue and just to avoid confessing to all your customers that you aren't patched to deal with it twice per year. ann ~*~ ~*~ ~*~ A. We don't use these things in a way that it would matter. No mention of Java specifics in that table for ARS 5.1.2. Also, the Mid-Tier 6.3 will be off an hour. Looking at patch 20, java then needs patching. Given how simply we use Remedy Help Desk and lite Change, I can't see why this makes much difference. Web client customers don't take an hour-by-hour view; it isn't that granular for them. Also, in April the old DST rules kick in and the difference should be corrected. Right? So, some things will be off for web client activities by an hour for a month I don't mind patching Mid-Tier 6.3 to patch 20, although I'd like some reassurance that it will work with unsupported ARS 5.1.2. That seems risky for other reasons. I've asked my unix sys admin about moving the dev server clock to March 10 to follow Remedy through the change and to test the clients. I wish we weren't stuck at ARS 5.1.2 but I've no support yet for hardware to be otherwise. We may even survive Vista, IE7, and DST but something will get us eventually. I really appreciate all the time people have taken to post information about this and other issues. Maybe if someone else was considering being ornery about riding this out, this will help the process. Re: upgrade for DST
David, If you don't mind me asking on the list - Is staying on 6.0.1 really an option if one wants support, regardless of the DST issue? It seems that technically 6.0.1 would fall off support in May, anway, from what I read of the support policy. I think 7.0 will have been out for a year in May, and 6.0 was released over 2 years ago... BMC Software provides Full Support for the current version/release of all its products as well as one release preceding it (C-1). Additionally, BMC Software will provide Limited Support to the C-2 release for 12 months after the current release has been made available. Regardless of the number of supported releases, BMC Software will always provide at least Limited Support for a version/release for a period of at least 24 months from the date on which the version/release became generally available (GA). ... or how does BMC see this? Printing on the web using arr report column width problem
ARS 6.3 Midtier 7 patch 2 HD 6 Oracle 10g Windows 2003 We have an .arr report for solutions tht our requesters can use to print solutions from the web. When they press the Print button on the solution form from the web, the arr report is displayed in IE. The report shows the solution number, the summary and the details of the solution. You can scroll to the right to see the entire summary and description if they are lengthy and have no carriage return in the text. The problem is column width wehn printing. When they choose FilePrint when in IE, if the so summary and/or description fields don't have a carriage return or are brief, the solution truncates when printing. People on the client use the same solutions, but we have column width control on the client side. Most of the time the summary and/or description data is more than 30 characters wide. I've tried changing changing in IE the print to landscape and more is printed but is still truncated. I don't want to have to add carriage returns in all the solution summaries and descriptions after only 30 characters. When you run the report on the client they would look strange. I went into the web config mgr and looked at Report Settings. Nothing there to check. Changed AR user preferences at the Report tab. Increased the width but made no difference; this was probably for client not web. How can I get the solution .arr report on the web to use print out column widths as designed or at least fit on the page when they print them? Re: Adding custom Permission Groups in ITSM 7
Rebecca, If you're creating a new permission group, then you'll need to work out the format of the records in the LIC:SYS-License Permission Map form and create a new record to represent your new permission. One of the easiest ways may be to export the records to a CSV File, work out which fields are important and are populated across all records, then edit the csv file to create one new entry for you to import in again. I think this is how this was done on the last project I worked on that required the same functionality. As far as I am aware there is no out of the box method for you to create new permission groups to use within ITSM, unless you just want Support Group or Multi-Tenancy Company functionality). This is considered to be a customisation, so you're effectively on your own. The CTM:People form is only designed to be used for ITSM users working with ITSM functionality out of the box. If you've got custom applications or custom permissions in your environment, then you'll need to customise data used by the CTM:People form to allow users to belong to the custom permission group. Re: ARS Training location/instructor recommendations
I just finished taking the v7 Admin Part 3 in Downer's Grove with Dan Gerrish. I also had him last year for Part 2. Dan did a great job. The part 2 class was quite large (14) and he managed the time line very well. This past class was very small and was a lot of fun since we were all experienced and dictated the speed. Dan gives a very clear explanation and is able to answer questions thoroughly. As will all classroom settings wierd things happen and those were all investigated and a resolution/cause determined. We didn't feel rushed nor held back. I took a class with Lenny years ago and it's true, he is great but very hard to get a class with. Lenny was just recently promoted and although will still be teaching it is likely that task will be diminished. Now if you're talking location and te is no issue nor time away, then Pleasanton would be my first choice. Been there many times and it's always great. Quite frankly, although the instructor is important ...what's really important is how you take in the information and the questions you ask to insure you understand what you're learning and how you're going to apply it back on the job. The composition of the class is also important to how it goes. I prefer a group that wants to learn not just show off hoping to get your future business. Re: Remedy 7 Performance Inquiry
I wish I had good news, but our testing has shown otherwise. IMHO, the mid-tier 7.x has severe problems with effectively caching the applications from the AR server. On our highest-powered test box we have mid-tier on an 8-core Win2K3 server with 12 gb RAM and both the Tomcat servlet and web server as installed by mid-tier 7.01. It is a 64-bit machine, but Tomcat and mid-tier cannot take advantage of that being 32-bit. IIS is not involved, although on the 64-bit Win2K3 where I have installed IIS and ServletExec they are not noticeably slower. IIS and ServletExec are 64-bit capable, but mid-tier is still 32. The 32-bit OS installs of either combo (Tomcat/Tomcat web or IIS/SE) are somewhat slower, but they are also mounted on half the hardware. The ITSM 7 application consoles and forms take over one minute to load the first time they are accessed - up to 1.5 minutes for the bigger ones. Almost all of the CPU load while this is happening is on the AR server (dedicated 4-core with 10 gb RAM). You can usually see one very quick db access to the SQL Server (also a dedicated 4-core with 10 gb RAM). The AR Server appears to max out one CPU, so it must be the single admin thread, and stays that way for the full time of the form load - up to 1.5 minutes. If you manage to get the barely documented prefetch configuration working, the initial load times for those forms successfully prefetched drops into the 15-20 seconds range. With or without prefetching, after the form loads the first time, it loads within 2-3 seconds afterwards - but only for users with the exact same permissions groups (a joke in ITSM 7, where everyone is going to have a different combination of the dozens of permissions required for all of the applications). Other users may still get the 1.5 minute initial load time if their permissions are too different. If they work in the application a while and happen to open a form that was not prefetched or cached, they will go from a 2-second response time on forms they were accessing to a minute or more on the new one. The reactions of our test users to this irregular and laggy work environment has _not_ been favorable. Throwing more hardware at it is not the answer - the 32-bit apps can't use what I have now effectively - and we are already split out to 3 separate servers, one for each function, with gb NICs on their own gb switch. By the way, the initial cost of a prefetch after the web server restarts is about 15 minutes of continuous load on the AR server, during which the application displays degraded response times even in the User tool. Normally, the footprint on the AR server of opening forms in the User Tool is a single CPU spike at 15-20% for a second and the form loads in 2-3 seconds based mostly on complexity. The AR server takes an even smaller hit once the form is being loaded from a cache on the mid-tier, but when it misses the cache (not cached yet, not prefetched, different permissions of user) the load is HUGE - and the delay again exceeds 1 minute on large forms. I have been unable to obtain prefetch scripts from BMC that have been designed to properly support the ITSM 7 application and its permissions model, and I refuse to do the work of their entire benchmarking organization (that they were so proud of at UserWorld) and try to figure it out for myself. I have been told by support that this will be addressed in the next release, but they could not tell me if that meant maintenance release or product point release. At this point, we are very disappointed in the inconsistency of mid-tier performance, and are disinclined to inflict it on our user community (~300 support staff and 45K active customers with read licenses). My hope is that BMC will address these issues in whatever maintenance releases come out between now and out target implementation date this summer. We are in a Windows environment and are moving to 7 with a potentially large customer base in a Tenancy model where there may well be 1200-1500+ licensed users. Most will be floating licensed/casual users with 6-10% fixed heavy users. In our testing the mid-tier seems very slow but we do have a single server sharing IIS, SQL and Apps for this test box, we plan to push the web client. In classes the systems with 2 GB RAM choked on some processes. Can someone please share real experiences, good or bad, with regards to performance of the mid-tier and what might be suggested as hardware sizing suggestions for the system? In addition to increasing the timeout, disable callbacks where they aren't needed. See the Configuring guide: See External-Authentication-Return-Data-Capabilities in ar.conf section. To quote the guide: A bit mask that allows you to specify the return data capabilities for the current AREA plug-in. This setting does not control the AREA plug-in, it merely describes the behavior of the plug-in, allowing for server optimization. Acceptable values are as follows: Bit 1 (Value=1)—No email address will be provided. Bit 2 (Value=2)—No notify mechanism will be provided. Bit 3 (Value=4)—No group identifiers will be provided. Bit 4 (Value=8)—No license information will be provided. Bit 5 (Value=16)—No notification user validation should occur. The default is 0, meaning the server will attempt to retrieve this information from AREA. A value of 7 will allow the server to potentially reduce the number of AREA related calls during notification processing. A value of 16 will allow the server to avoid using AREA for notification user validation and information retrieval. Use this setting for sites using a form of AREA that applies user names as email addresses and where there is no benefit to accessing an authentication database. You can eliminate all the calls by using a value of 31. This should be configured to match the information you store and retrieve from the directory. Re: Information about table returning no. of licenses consumed in remedy
Enable server statistics, which can be configured from your admin tool's server information dialog. You will need to define a collection interval. For the purpose of license information, the cumulative queue will suffice. The name of the form where the information is stored is named Server Statistics. There are several relavent values you will want to use: floating licenses, fixed licenses, read licenses, total licenses, etc. Axton Grams On 2/19/07, Tarun Kumar SHARMA [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, I want to create a dashboard of license consumption in remedy at any point of time everyday.
