Re: Buy vs. Build

I tip my hat to BMC/Remedy for holding a unique session dedicated solely to
the AR System . . .

Now, what about those complimentary developer kits?

When you look at BMC User World Sessions schedule this year, it is pretty
obvious what the direction of ARS is as far as BMC Software is concerned. No
mention of the ARS product only OOTB products listed.

I was planning to go but NOW I don't see the value in going and am finding
it VERY hard to justify the trip to management.

That initially means laying off and then eventually hiring
people.
This has some implications in terms of active development in
the
product lines and other things. Also, Microsoft has deep
pockets.

Can BMC weather the storm? Is bankruptcy an option?

Seems like Microsoft got into some hot water over its
licensing
practices. Is this a healthy image or a good place to be
in?

Seems like there were problems as well:

trying to
drop all premonitions and have an open view of all sides.

Why not use a Restricted Read license? It can then login from multiple
IPs, and since you don't need to update anything it should work fine.

Subject: dynamic infopage built in remedy - how to bypass login page

This is my first question to this list.

My Remedy DEV skills are fairly basic, but I get along okay for our
needs.

I am running ARS 6.3 on a UNIX Solaris system (Oracle DB).

I have a form that I wish to make "publically" available on our
intranet... I am hoping to bypass the login screen in some fashion.

In our environment, only support IT people are using our Remedy system
and will know what to do at the login screen. I do have Guest access
enabled.

I have a form - nothing complex, some tables that pull in some data -
that I hope to replace an old, ugly, manually-updated HTML page on our
intranet. I have everything configured nicely except for the fact that
as it's in Remedy, the direct access link will take you to a login
screen that a significant number of users won't know what to do with.

My first thought was that I could encode the direct access URL to
pre-populate a username and let Guest access take care of the rest.
This actually works nicely... for the first user who hits the link. The
second person who hits that link gets a message advising that the
username (encoded in the URL) is already in use.

I could create a piece of java script that randomizes the username
component of the direct access URL (have it populate the pc machine name
or something), except I am hoping there's another/simpler/within-remedy
solution.

Basically, I want people to be able to click the link, bring up my form
(which is mainly a dynamic info page, no records will be submitted from
it) and get straight to the page without a login screen.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Max Eisenberg

ITSM completely out of the box

2008-07-25 Thread David K Hill
Hello,

I'm looking for companies who have successfully implemented ITSM completely
out of the box? (Except of course the usual Data Configuration Changes).

What I am looking for is contact information for those companies that have
successfully implemented the ITSM Suite out of the box with the normal
Foundation Data configurations or any development teams who have successful
implemented customized (external forms and workflow) that takes advantage of
the API/Web Services interfaces with the ITSM Core Suite (No modified
modules etc).

Also; if anyone has successfully migrated from the HP Service Desk CMDB to
the BMC Remedy CMDB product.

Perhaps the answer se are available on a web site or list somewhere; but I
missed it.

Thanks so much.

Re: dynamic infopage built in remedy - how to bypass login page

2008-07-25 Thread Chintan Shah
Hi Max,

Are people just going to view the form or submit records too?

Is "readrestrict" an option available for you?

If yes, then probably you can have a custom JSP page and using Javabeans you
can do  LDAP Authentication and then after successful authentication you  can
re-direct them directly to your page. You can even pre-populate  certain fields
from LDAP on form if you want to.

Here is how you can re-direct through read-restrict license in your custom JSP.

Is it working on IE 7 below?

Have you recently configured Mid-tier to be behind a load balancer? This
could return invalid sessions if you have not configured it for sticky

Our organization pushed out IE7 last Friday and currently there is one
user having trouble with an app using MidTier since then. Unfortunately, we
have not been able to figure it out and have been going round and round
trying different things since we can't duplicate with any other user. She
receives the error ARERR 9201 - invalid session when performing almost any
action in the app. Wondering if anyone else is having this problem or have
any suggestions on where to look for resolution or a workaround. We are in
the process upgrading the dev web server to MidTier 7.1 but need a
workaround/fix until then.

We have tried comparing IE settings, different user names, etc…sometimes
she is working but most of the time she is not. Of course, we have deleted
cache, cookies and history on numerous occasions. Another weird thing that I
noticed today is that when she logs out, the license tool still shows that
she is connected.

We would be grateful for any suggestions at this time.

I would not say "thou shalt not" but others might.

I just think we should install OOB only, and tell the customers that BMC
does not us to change their code.

That was a good one, thanks for sharing it and have a good weekend,

IE 7 and MidTier 6.3

2008-07-25 Thread Harbin, Erica M. (MSFC-NNM04AA02C)[SAIC]
ARS server - 7.0.1 patch3
MidTier - 6.3 (custom patch)
DB - Oracle 10

Our organization pushed out IE7 last Friday and currently there is one
user having trouble with an app using MidTier since then. Unfortunately,
we have not been able to figure it out and have been going round and
round trying different things since we can't duplicate with any other
user. She receives the error ARERR 9201 - invalid session when
performing almost any action in the app. Wondering if anyone else is
having this problem or have any suggestions on where to look for
resolution or a workaround. We are in the process upgrading the dev web
server to MidTier 7.1 but need a workaround/fix until then.
We have tried comparing IE settings, different user names,
etc...sometimes she is working but most of the time she is not. Of
course, we have deleted cache, cookies and history on numerous
occasions. Another weird thing that I noticed today is that when she
logs out, the license tool still shows that she is connected.
We would be grateful for any suggestions at this time.

Thanks!

Re: Fax to Attachment

Sorry, I just realized it was a TIF format fax that Faxback was sending and
the utility was processing. My mistake.

Subject: RE: Fax to Attachment

Hi Joel,

Here are some more details. Basically, this is what we were going to do for
that customer:

1. Have the fax come into a Faxback server
2. The Faxback server would SMTP email the fax as a PDF attachment to the
Remedy Email Engine account
3. The Email Engine would push the email record and fax attachment to a
processing form
4. The processing form would do a run process to save the attachment to a
directory on the ARS server
5. Another run process would run a program to scan the document for barcodes
and return the results to a file
6. Another run process would pull the bar code scan results from the file
back into a Remedy field
7. The bar code number results in the Remedy field (in a specific XML
format) would be parsed and set into other appropriate data fields
8. The appropriate bar code data field would be matched to the other schema
and the attachment would be pushed to that record

For #5, I found an awesome program that scans a PDF and prepares XML output
with all of the barcodes contained in that PDF (even if the barcode is
twisted or skewed). The program is only $85. You can find it at:

http://www.metois.com/Eymbarcode/main_eymbccmd.htm

I would be interested in knowing if you (or anyone else) implements this
solution, a tweaked version of it, or a better one. We will likely be
implementing this in the next fiscal year.

Another side note... In testing, we found some problems with multiple run
process commands running in sequence in ARS 6.3. This timing issue was
logged as a defect by BMC. They said it is fixed in ARS 7, but we haven't
tested it yet. But if you are going to implement, I would recommend going
with 7 if you aren't already.

Cheers,
Jeff

Hi Joel,

We designed a solution like this for a customer. We used a standard
fax-to-email with/PDF software (Faxback was the one we were looking at) and
another program that could be called from workflow that would scan the PDF
and yank out the barcode data.

If you contact me off of the list, I can provide you with all of the

We are starting a custom ARS application implementation to replace a current

to be able to duplicate. Unfortunately, we cannot access the current coding

The functionality we need to duplicate is:
After a requester has created a ARS record, they need to be able to fax a
paper copy of a document and have it attached to the ARS record
automatically.
Today they print a cover sheet that has several barcodes on it, including
the request number for the ARS record.
They then fax the cover sheet and the document to a fax number and the
'system' reads the faxed barcodes on the cover sheet and attaches the
document to the appropriate service request.

Our problem is that we have no idea how to build the same capability into a
custom ARS application.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: Advanced Search? - RESOLVED

2008-07-25 Thread William Rentfrow
I must have REALLY mangled the spelling of "identifier" for spell
checker to change it to "denier" below. My bad :)

Subject: RE: Advanced Search? - RESOLVED

This one was a little interesting...and useful - read on:

Some background - there is sensitive information in this system. I am
not really supposed to say what but I'll just call them "personal unique
identifiers" (PUI). For the sake of example let's say the field ID is
12345.

These identifiers can go into a case if appropriate.

We do NOT want people to be able to search on the identifier.
Consequently I added field 1005 to the form. This is a system field
which holds the content of the advanced search bar. When a person is in
"Query" mode the denier field is disabled so they can not type in it.
If they use advanced search you can run an active link that fires on the
search like this:

'Search Bar' LIKE "%PUI%" OR 'Search Bar' LIKE "%$12345$%"

You can spit out the appropriate "thou shalt not" error
messageHOWEVER - it turns out that adding the search bar field to
the view forces the "Advanced Search" button to disabled - this is
appropriate because the system field would be on there twice if it was
turned on and selected.

The answer - add the field to the form but do not have it in the view(s)
you are using. Since it's system field it still works correctly in the
workflow without being in the view.

Useful HTTPS information for Web Reports

2008-07-25 Thread William Rentfrow
We discovered something today via the help of BMC Support.

If you are using web reports with IIS + BOXI + Tomcat it will work. If
you install the ARWebReportViewer after you have Tomcat installed you
can choose to not install Tomcat. If you do this the integration
between IIS and Tomcat is not installed. Consequently, if you are using
HTTPS it will not work because the integration between IIS and the
Tomcat redirector, etc, doesn't work properly.

So - if you plan on using HTTPS to secure web reporting/printing - it's
best to install the Tomcat option along with the ARWebReportViewer.
Otherwise you have to manually configure the connector, etc.

No that's not the issue. I have change mgmt installed as well and
I can create change requests. I am not using requester console to create an
incident but going via the overview console to create the new incident. I
click on the first stage of the workflow and from the menu click next stage
and a form appears in which I am filling out all the mandatory fields
indicated.

Thanks
Sivarama

Re: Fax to Attachment

2008-07-25 Thread Jeff Lockemy (Northrop Grumman Mission Systems)
Hi Joel,

We designed a solution like this for a customer. We used a standard
fax-to-email with/PDF software (Faxback was the one we were looking at) and
another program that could be called from workflow that would scan the PDF
and yank out the barcode data.

If you contact me off of the list, I can provide you with all of the
details, if you are interested.

Cheers,
Jeff

Subject: Fax to Attachment

ARSlisters,
I was asked this question and drew a blank:

We are starting a custom ARS application implementation to replace a current
proprietary system. The current system has a faxing functionality we need
to be able to duplicate. Unfortunately, we cannot access the current coding
because it is proprietary code.

Thanks,
Joel

Re: Question: Approvals in ITSM 7 (Chg Mgmt)

2008-07-25 Thread Eli Schilling
Thanks for the reply Tauf. The approval process is configured so that
"all must sign". The issue only arises when ad-hoc approvers are
intermingled with system-assigned approvers. If the approval process
flows using only approvers set by automated rules there are no issues.

Thanks again!

Can you check to see at that "Sheduled for Review" phase, if it is set
to "One must sign" or "all must sign"

That may be the issue.

Subject: Question: Approvals in ITSM 7 (Chg Mgmt)

Greetings listers!

I've been seeing some oddities in our change approval process lately so
I wanted to kick this out to the list for feedback.

The Details: We're on AR 7.0.01 Patch 006 (Win2k3, SQL 2005, etc); we're
using Approval Server 7.0.01 and Change Management 7.0.03 Patch 006.

At "Scheduled for Review" we call the Change Management Chain process to
get manager approval. After approved it goes to Scheduled for Approval
where it awaits Change Manager (CAB) approval. So here's the catch...if
you manually add an approver before the change is in one of these
approval processes it screws everything up. Lets say I add 3 people
prior to the approval process...then move the change to "Scheduled for
Review" and my manager is added. If my manager approves before the
other 3 people the change moves to the next status. Sometimes we get
duplicate approvers and in trying to cancel the duplicates it can cause
the change to jump to the next status (per the Approval Process
Configuration settings) which totally screws everything up.

Anyone seen this type of behavior before?

Thanks!

Eli

2008-07-25 Thread Lisa Westerfield
Make sure the contact company field is the one that's filled in. It's confusing
sometimes because of the multiple company fields.

I've seen users get similar errors becaus they didn't press (enter) in the
requestor's information, so it didn't pull back the location information.

Just an idea...

To the best of my knowledge there is no way to manipulate (ie,
enable/disable) the web advanced search button through workflow so this
is rather vexing. If it is it means you are in search mode and it
should be available.

Using Source Control with ARS 7.1 and CMDB 2.1

2008-07-25 Thread Michelle L
Good Day, Fellow Listers:

ARS 7.1 patch 002
ITSM 7.0
CMDB 2.1
Windows 2003
SQL Server 2005
Visual Source Safe 2005

I have a few questions regarding source-control brands and versions used
with ARS 7.1, ITSM 7.x and CMDB 2.x. We've tried both Dimensions and
Visual Source Safe 2005 on ARS 7.1.

ARS 7.1 Questions:
1. Do you use Source Control with ARS 7.1 & ITSM 7.x?
2. If so what brand and version?
3. Does it work?
4. Can objects be packaged from the Source Control server?

CMDB 2.1 Specific:
1. Is it possible to use any brand or version of Source Control with CMDB
2.1?

2. We know that most CMDB changes are made from the Class Manager. How
would one capture those changes into Source Control? Our release process
doesn't typically include manual changes. We make the changes in dev,
package, release to QA/Staging, and then finally release to production.

3. Has anyone made an attempt to use source control with CMDB 2.x? If so
what brand and version worked for your environment?

Thank you in advance for your response.
Michelle

Re: Limiting Web Service Results

2008-07-25 Thread Frank Caruso
Yes ... and that does limit the number of results returned but it does limit
the number of rows fetched which was what I was looking for. I don't think I
made that clear

We are getting the following error (404) from Sybase when there are too many
rows being returned:
"Too many ANDS or ORs in expression (limit 1024 per expression level)"

Remedy is putting togetehr a query like: select * from ??? where c1 in
("1","2","3","4"). It puts each ID in the IN clause until it runs into the
Sybase limit.

 *Hi Frank,*

Yes, we can limit the number of rows returned while publishing the
 services in remedy.

While creating web service for the get operation or get list operation
in remedy, below the Qualification there is two options called *Start
 record* and *Max Limit*.

Where we can limit the number of rows return.

 Hope this helps...

Is there a way that a consumer of a Remedy web service can limit the

Or, is there something I can do to the web service in Remedy to only
allow so many results to be returned.

the HPD:Help Desk form in IM 7.03.

And we've flushed the cache, etc, on the mid-tier - but for some
reason the "Advanced Search" is always grayed out/disabled.

What gives? I feel like I'm missing something stupid but it's
been one of those weeks

Re: Limiting Web Service Results

2008-07-25 Thread Robert Halstead
Frank,

On a getList operation in the web service click on output mapping. Then
click on the child element under ROOT on the XML Data Type side of the
window. Bring up the properties of the getListValues element. Set the
MaxOccurs from unbounded to a specified number.

This is on 6.3 patch 20.

pretty obvious what the direction of ARS is as far as BMC Software is

I was planning to go but NOW I don't see the value in going and am

Re: Write access error when a "Read" only user try to modify his own Report on the web ???

2008-07-25 Thread Ben Chernys
Submitter Mode Locked means you cannot change the value of the Submitter field
even is you use the Merge API. It is a pretty benign thing to do as
(generally)the submitter field does not change. It allows those with read
licenses to update those records that they submitted.

Cheers
Ben

Please Read The Disclaimer At The Bottom Of This Email

If you want to avoid modifying ITSM workflow, you have two options.
Make your filter run before the ITSM filter or make execution order of your
filter above 930.
Other alternative is to create a filter which runs before the ITSM filter and
has GOTO action to after the ITSM filter and hence skipping its functionality.

Hope this helps.

I think I figured it out - there is a "OOB" Filter running from the
ITSM 7 application called "HPD:INC:AR_003_ESCALATOR" - which runs if
$USER$ = "AR_ESCALATOR" with a GOTO execution order of 930.

I was looking at my escalation to see if I could set the "Last
Modified By" to something else, but I can't.

Any ideas?

Thanks again - your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Question: Trigger a Modify ?

2008-07-25 Thread Cox, Melvin E.
Modify will work as it is a modification to the ticket. Merge is an
action that occurs in an import or DSO type operation.

Re: Question: Trigger a Modify ?

2008-07-25 Thread T. Dee

2008-07-25 Thread T. Dee
I turned on Filter logging on the server and it shows "Failed Qualification".

However, if I manually hit the save button it shows the Filter running.

I looked at Last Modified By and it is AR_ESCALATOR.

There has to be a way to trigger a "Modify".

With my escalation I have tried a "SET FIELDS" - didn't work. Then I
tried a "PUSH FIELDS" - didn't work.

But I know my Filter is good because if I manually hit the save button
it fires.  I have tried 'TR.FieldName' != $NULL$ and 'FieldName' !=
$NULL$ - both do not work - I have turned on Filter Logging both
times.

This may sound as a stupid question, but how do you know your filter is not
firing when the escalation runs?
Also, did you check the last modified by/date on the record? Does it show
AR_ESCALATOR and a recent time?

An update, I've received the following stack traces during the
reproduction of this or something similar. Two signal 11's.

As a side note, one thing I think Remedy needs is the ability to
define joins with multiple data sources. Take the join in this
example, the base tables and the largest join are the only data sets I
need. All of the other joins are just clutter. This feature should
even be bundled with the ability to support unions, aggregate
functions, column concatenation, and all of the other things that are
possible on every db that Remedy runs on.

Re: Question: Trigger a Modify ?

Thanks Leonard - yes the Filter Fires if I manually set Field "A" and
save the record.

Re: Question: Trigger a Modify ?

2008-07-25 Thread T. Dee
I ran logging and the logs show it fails qualification with the TR.

I then removed the TR and physically changed some data on the record
and saved the record and my Filter did fire.

So I know my Filter qualification is correct.

The problem is how to trigger a Modify so my Filter will Fire. The
escalation "setting" the field is not triggering a Modify.

The escalation is working because I have a blank field (field "A")
database field that I am setting and my Filter says if Field "A" is
NOT NULL then do the action.

Any ideas?

Thank you!!!

Hi,

I changed the Submitter mode to locked and It works... Do you know what
is the impact of changing this "Submitter mode" from Changeable to
Locked ?

Thanks

Pascal,

Please verify three things...

1) Your using Submitter mode locked on the ARS server(s) in question.
2) The data row in question ( the report) shows field 2 ('Submitter')
as the correct $ USER$ value.
3) The fields that are being changed have 'Submitter' group change
access to them.

I seem to remember some bug with the Reporting forms/workflow that was
resolved somewhere in the 7.x line that affected how 'Submitter's
value was set and maybe even the permissions on some of the fields. If
any of the three above do not "look right" then I would contact BMC
Tech support and see if they think your at a version/patch level that
does not have this fixed yet.

Write access error when a "Read" only user try to modify his own Report on the web ???

2008-07-25 Thread Tournier, Pascal
Hi,

We have recently migrated to Remedy ARS version 7.0.1 and wanted to go
to the Web access interface via Mid-tier. My question concern the Report
functionality, when I create and save a new report by using the "Report
Creator" form with one user who have only a "Read" license everything
works fine but once this report is saved, if I would like to modify
something (like adding a new field in the Report) with the same user, I
get the error message saying that I do not have write access to the
different fields... So this is really problematic because I can create a
report with a user having a "Read" license but this user is unable to
change this report afterwards !!! Is there a way to fix that so that
user having a "Read" license can also modify their own saved report...

Thanks

Regards

Pascal
