Problem when install ARsystem

2012-04-05 Thread Mahmoud Mahdy-Mohamed
Dears,
I'm facing a problem while installing ARS 7.6.04 first; it is related to JRE, I
already installed JDK 6 but the following error appears:-
Enter the path to the JRE that you want to use with AR System. If a JRE is not
installed on your system, install JRE 1.5 or later before continuing.
Please help.

2012-04-05 Thread Shiju John
Hi,
Make sure of the following things.

If you are installing 64 Bit ARS server, then you need both 64-bit JDK-JRE,
as well as 32 bit JRE.

You can mention the respective paths while installation.

Thanks and Regards,
Shiju John.

Adding indexes to BMC class forms

2012-04-05 Thread Atul Vohra
All,

We are using ARS / Atrium / ITSM 7.6.04 with the latest patches.

I wanted to add indexes to few fields on the following classes (forms):
BMC.CORE:BMC_BaseElement - TokenID, DataSetID
BMC.CORE:BMC_HardwareSystemComponent_ - SystemName
BMC.CORE:BMC_LogicalSystemComponent_ - SystemName

For the BMC.CORE:BMC_BaseElement, I added the index to the Class using Class
Manager and that reflected on the remedy form as desired.

SystemName field is on BMC_SystemComponent class (an abstract class), that
based on the abstract class functionality, pushed to the asset forms of its
children (in this case BMC.CORE:BMC_HardwareSystemComponent_ and
BMC.CORE:BMC_LogicalSystemComponent_)

The issue is now that SystemName field being on an abstract class, I can add
the index to that abstract class in the Class Manager but it does not get
pushed along with the field to the child class forms.

I am not sure how to proceed here:
Do I add the index to the BMC.CORE:BMC_HardwareSystemComponent_ and
BMC.CORE:BMC_LogicalSystemComponent_ forms from the Dev Studio? Will it be done
with overlay? Will any future change to these classes drop the manually added
index?

Any thoughts?

Regards
Atul

Which OS?

On a Unix OS, with the JDK, the JRE is located at JDK Path/jre. So if my

ARERR [331] You do not have write access (for this entry) to field

2012-04-05 Thread Brian Schwieder
I have a custom form that I need to allow users with Read access to update.
However when they go to save they get ARERR [331] You do not have write access
(for this entry) to field

Permissions wise, the field has Public - Change, Submitter - Change,
Unrestricted Access - Change, and General Access - Change.

The field also has the flag Allow any user to submit set to yes. The submitter
mode is set to Locked.

So what am I missing? Do I need to register my form somewhere?

The only way a person with a read license can update anything is if you have
Submitter Mode = Locked (in the Admin Console - Licenses tab) and the user
is the submitter of that record.

2012-04-05 Thread Shellman, David
With us and older versions, the form would appear to start to open and present
it in white. No other information would be displayed.

When a form is opened with the desktop client, form data and work flow is
written as ARxAdmin.arv and ARxSy001.arf in a directory associated with the
form. These directories are usually under a Home directory. If the individual
does not have write permission to the directory structure, the forms will not
open.

It is a graph of our code progression over the versions -- kinda neat.

I did the image - as an inline email image. (via Google Mail)

Which - BTW - to do that -- just grab an image and drag it into the body of the

At a loss with Mid-Tier 7.5 Patch 6

2012-04-05 Thread Christopher Pruitt
We are installing the BMC Remedy Mid-Tier 7.5 Patch 6 on a brand new server and
encountering some java errors that Technical Support can't seem to resolve. I
was hoping someone on the list has encountered this before and can't give me
some pointers as to a resolution.

Here are the details:

OS/Version: Windows Server 2008 64 Bit R2 Enterprise Edition
ARS Mid-Tier Version/Patch- 7.5 Patch 6
WebServer/Version- Apache Tomcat Server 5.5.28
JSP Engine/Version- Tomcat 5.5.28
Java Version - 1.6.0_30 (32-bit)

Installed Java 6.0 32-bit version
Installed Mid-Tier version 7.5 patch 6 and selected the Tomcat default install
along with it.

I added the following to the Java tab on the Tomcat Config tab

-Djava.library.path=C:\Program Files (x86)\BMC

Launched Mid-Tier Config page. Got the login screen. Entered the mid-tier

Re: Large Character Fields even Larger?

2012-04-05 Thread Kemes, Lisa
Possibly. I was able to move the data from our current production (7.6.04 SP2)
to our old production 7.1p7 and run my workflow and I didn't get any errors.

It looks like when a field was updated with a filter the character limit didn't
matter (if it were manually updated through user tool or midtier it would have
popped up an error). That was in 7.1 p7.

Now it looks like it matters whether it's populated with a filter or manual in
7.6.04 SP2.

Thanks!

Lisa

Have the DBA's converted the data to unicode? That would explain the additional

Nevermind, when I increased it to 400,000 it now works. Why would it work in
7.1 p7 with 9, but I have to increase it to 400,000 in 7.6.04 SP2? The
data is basically the same.

Thanks!

We upgraded from ARS 7.1 p7 to 7.6.04 SP2 and I'm found that one of my large
character fields that I've set to 9 (for example) is getting errors that
the Character String exceed maximum size allowed: 536870919 when I try to set
it. It only happens to those records that do have quite a large amount of
characters, but this never happened in 7.1 p7.

I pushed it up to 2 characters and I'm still getting the error. Looks like
this is more on the DB side? Should I talk to my DBA?

Re: At a loss with Mid-Tier 7.5 Patch 6

2012-04-05 Thread Axton
What the errors are saying is that the java classes can not locate the
native libraries (.dll files in the case of Windows). I think on Windows
the native libraries need to be in the PATH environment variable. On
Unix/Linux, the native libraries (.so files) need to be in the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH or LIB_PATH. The quick and dirty way to fix this is to
place all the dll files into the windows\system32 directory. After
altering the PATH environment variable, I believe you will need to reboot
the system.

Re: Problem when install ARsystem

2012-04-05 Thread Logan, Kelly
Note that there is a tricky dialog in the installation, even if you have set up
64bit JDK and JRE and it has found them, it starts with the default of using a
32bit java for several things due to known issues with the 64bit
implementations. If these known issues are not a problem for you (things like
not being able to use OLE with Developer), then you need to uncheck the boxes
on this dialog that are checked by default. Then you will be using pure 64bit
java.

Re: Large Character Fields even Larger?

2012-04-05 Thread LJ LongWing
Lisa,

As I move through the upgrades over the years I often start experiencing
issues with my application that I didn't have before the upgrade. As I dig
into the issues I find one of two things

1 - The problem I'm having is a NEW bug in Remedy that's preventing
something from occurring properly that should work just fine, and did before
the upgrade

Or

2 - Remedy had what I call a 'functional bug' where something in their code
was not working properly.but now IS.and because it wasn't working properly
in the past, but allowed to do what I wanted, despite the fact that it
wasn't configured properly.I think it's #1, but it's really a problem in my
code, not theirs.

Your situation sounds like it might fall in the category of #2.where it
SHOULD have been throwing an error before.but because of a functional bug,
it allowed you to do something that you shouldn't have been able to do.but
now that they have tightened their net.your loophole is now closed J. I
consider these good things because it means they are closing bugs in their
system that cause unanticipated behavior.

Possibly. I was able to move the data from our current production (7.6.04
SP2) to our old production 7.1p7 and run my workflow and I didn't get any
errors.

It looks like when a field was updated with a filter the character limit
didn't matter (if it were manually updated through user tool or midtier it
would have popped up an error). That was in 7.1 p7.

Now it looks like it matters whether it's populated with a filter or manual
in 7.6.04 SP2.

Thanks!

Thanks LJ!

I agree that it's probably #2 as well. My fields are usually over 100,000
characters (or more) and no errors ever appeared even though I set it to 90,000
characters in the old system. When I increased it to a more accurate level in
the new system, no more errors!

There have been other things that I've noticed as well that 7.6.04 SP2 is
catching that 7.1 p7 never caught before.

Thanks!

And views are generally preferable as if (for whatever reason) the underlying
table gets renamed, you can still keep the same view name, and recreate the
view, keeping the view form in the AR System intact..

This is specially the case if the view form is against an internal AR System
table, where the table name across environments may not be the same depending
on the method you use to promote your customizations or development to prod.
Even if the table name is not the same, the view name stays consistent.

Thanks LJ!

I agree that it's probably #2 as well. My fields are usually over 100,000
characters (or more) and no errors ever appeared even though I set it to
90,000 characters in the old system. When I increased it to a more accurate
level in the new system, no more errors!

There have been other things that I've noticed as well that 7.6.04 SP2 is
catching that 7.1 p7 never caught before.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Look at the documentation surrounding view forms.. they have supported data
type.. varchar and nvarchar is not supported.. varchar2 and nvarchar2 in case
of unicode is supported. I do not have the documentation handy to quote the
exact pages and the text from it but I think its in either the Admin or the

Re: 7.6.04 bloted:want to clean house. but where?

2012-04-05 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza

I do not recall which exact version, but there was at least one version which
kept the old dll’s along with the new ones in the same directory. The dll
nameing format was dllnameversion.dll which allowed the new one to be
copied in the directory without needing to remove the older one, and the
installer didn’t clean them up.

Again I do not recall if this was on the server side or on the client
installs.. It could have been both...

Re: At a loss with Mid-Tier 7.5 Patch 6

2012-04-05 Thread Pruitt, Christopher (Bank of America Account)
I tried every combination that all of you suggested and nothing worked. SO I
threw a deep pass and it fixed my Java issue.

This is what I did. I uninstalled Mid-tier along with Tomcat.

Reinstalled but put both Mid-Tier and Tomcat into the C:\Program Files\
directory instead of the defaulted C:\Program Files (x86)\ directory and now it
works. I don't know why this fixed the issue but I am not fighting it.

I want to thank all of you for your quick responses and it was the comment from
John Sundberg when he said ...move it all to c:\arlib that started me down
this path. I just love BMC installers sometimes.

We are installing the BMC Remedy Mid-Tier 7.5 Patch 6 on a brand new server and
encountering some java errors that Technical Support can't seem to resolve. I
was hoping someone on the list has encountered this before and can't give me
some pointers as to a resolution.

Here are the details:

OS/Version: Windows Server 2008 64 Bit R2 Enterprise Edition
ARS Mid-Tier Version/Patch- 7.5 Patch 6
WebServer/Version- Apache Tomcat Server 5.5.28
JSP Engine/Version- Tomcat 5.5.28
Java Version - 1.6.0_30 (32-bit)

Installed Java 6.0 32-bit version
Installed Mid-Tier version 7.5 patch 6 and selected the Tomcat default install
along with it.

I added the following to the Java tab on the Tomcat Config tab

-Djava.library.path=C:\Program Files (x86)\BMC
Software\ARSystem\midtier\WEB-INF\lib

Launched Mid-Tier Config page. Got the login screen. Entered the mid-tier
password, pressed enter and this appeared.

2012-04-05 Thread Jason Miller
There was some discussion regarding the Workflow directory in the thread
Delete contents of the workflow directory starting on 6/10/2011. David
Easter confirmed these files were not currently used by the system.

We archived them off without any impact on our older system however that
system never made it to fully production. We build a brand new 7.6.04
system... Which reminds me that we need to clean out the 3.35 GB on the
server that was built as 7.6.04 SP2 and only updated to AR SP3.

Re: View Form

2012-04-05 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza
Send a description (assuming you are using Oracle type describe table name on
the SQL prompt) of the table or view you are building this view form.

The data types that are definitely not compatible are db date and time type
data.. these would need conversion to integer data so you could create Date and
Time fields from it.. If you have date and time related info on that view form,
you are definitely looking at a little more work than just type casting..

Send a description (assuming you are using Oracle type describe table name on

The data types that are definitely not compatible are db date and time type
data.. these would need conversion to integer data so you could create Date and
Time fields from it.. If you have date and time related info on that view form,
you are definitely looking at a little more work than just type casting..

Look at the documentation surrounding view forms.. they have supported data
type.. varchar and nvarchar is not supported.. varchar2 and nvarchar2 in case
of unicode is supported. I do not have the documentation handy to quote the
exact pages and the text from it but I think its in either the Admin or the
configuration guides..

So it’s a case of ‘working as designed’. You may have to do some type casting..

I spoke too soon. Remedy will only use the Integer fields in this view now. It
doesn’t seem to like nvarchar. I will have to convert all the fields when I
create the new view.

View forms work against database views or database tables.

Sometimes it is better to create local views for linked objects

Automating this type of thing is quite simple with Meta-Update.

All hidden references can be adjusted within the script. You can either have
an extract/import philosophy or just connect to the source and target servers
simultaneously.

Note that structures have changed and again, Meta-Update is designed to allow
data automations across different structures.

Subject: Question on Migrating Approval Mappings?

Friends,

Prod is ars 7.1 itsm 7.1 RHEL 5 Oracle 11g

I have around 80 Approval Mappings in there and I want to bring it onto our
Sandbox env, ARS 77 itsm 77 beta. What is the best approach to bring that over?
Not Sure doing an Import of the data is the right approach(Since it has the
Support id, Person id references etc.,)? anyone who had this experience if you
can share your thoughts would be really helpful.

Thank you
S K

HTML and Plain Text emails

2012-04-05 Thread Mike Davis
We modified all of the notifications in SYS:Notification Messages with html
tags, bolding field names and a few other things. This works great, except that
the people with their email set up to receive in Plain Text format are seeing
the html tags in their notifications.

The email templates used under AR System Email Templates have the following in
them:

HTML
BODY

/BODY
/HTML

Has anyone tried to do this and if so, how did you accomplish your goal?
