IE8 Session Handling and Multiple Login Issue

2013-04-05 Thread John Baker
We have a survey, that is emailed to Customers. This email uses a its
generic id to login and bring up the survey form; overall multiple log in.

So you have multiple users logging in with a single AR System user, ie a
single User form entry? I thought AR System didn't allow this and you're
bumping into the licensing code?

You could always implement an SSO solution so users never had to login,
and would login as their own user :-)

 Hmmm...

The first Swedish mobile phone call was made in 1950, and the first
 commercial
mobile phone system was launched in 1956.

There were only three very powerful base stations (cells?) in Sweden. The
bulky phones, which needed to be installed in cards, could be connected to
 up
 to three base stations.

Hi,
As Joe has mentioned, you need to apply the patch in the correct sequence
for a Server Group (Admin Server first). The instructions for these are in

Haven't tried it on a server group yet, but I don't see why you would need
to do any of that either. It doesn't alter the database structure so the
other servers in the server group should still be able to connect when one
has been patched.

But I don't see why you would leave some servers unpatched. I would do them
all one after the other..

The only thing I would do (although I do not see the need to) is stop the
service on the other servers too and declare a maintenance outage..

It will help to know what version to what version you'll are trying to move
from and your current architecture and environment.. Without which it is
only possible to give you very generalized information.

One advise that will work irrespective of what your architecture and
environment is, is that you got to give it a whole lot of more memory and
processing power than your previous version.

I have other than that not run into anything 'major' that's worth talking
about (considering that everyone these days knows you got to prepare your
apps if they have been customized, to compare the differences to create an
overlay layer).

Replicating ARS Installation on Linux

2013-04-05 Thread Nathan Brandt
Hello,

I installed ARS 7.6.04 on a RHEL 5.3 on top of Oracle.
Tomcat was installed at /opt/apache and ARS (with all the applications) was
installed at /opt/bmc. I want to replicate this setup on a different
machine. Just wanted to know if following would work

1. Using expdp take dump of ARADMIN schema on existing machine
2. tar zip /opt/bmc and /opt/apache folders on existing machine
3. Install Oracle on another machine say machine2
4. Using impdp restore ARADMIN schema on machine2
5. restore folders /opt/bmc and /opt/apache on machine2
6. Change ar.conf file to point to correct database
7. Change license key

Has anyone tried this approach?

Hi :)I'm not sure it'll be that easy. You also have a "/etc/arsystem/servername/" folder with "armonitor.conf" file for example. Then when you install ARS there are some manual steps to be applied if you don't install on root, for example some files to be copied, declaring RPC ports in "/etc/rpc/", check the "installation guides" for a complete list. You also have a lot of places where the server name is written, in files like ar.conf, all the "pluginsrv_config.xml" files, but also in database and some forms (attached files, reports...).If you just copy the files like this I doubt you'll be able to just start ARS.As for tomcat I would go for a clean mid-tier installation, should take minutes. On 05 Apr, 2013,at 11:36 AM, Nathan Brandt nathanrbra...@gmail.com wrote:**Hello,I installed ARS 7.6.04 on a RHEL 5.3 on top of Oracle.Tomcat was installed at /opt/apache and ARS (with all the applications) was installed at /opt/bmc. If you modify the object then you don't have to add it again. As packing

2013-04-05 Thread Hullule, Kiran
In addition to the following info, there are also hardcode server name
references in remedy workflow objects (those are currently in your database)
you would also need to take care of them as well.
Better option would be:

Export ARsystem tablespace with expdp or whatever you think is better.
Restore that on proposed remedy database server
Run remedy installer pointing towards the newly restored database server
Install rest of the application components one by one.
Whenever and wherever require remedy application installer will just lay down
the libraries and binaries instead of touching the actual database objects,
however this does not mean it won't remove the hardcode references , installer
will take care of that as well.

This can be good approach in my opinion.

Hi :)

I'm not sure it'll be that easy.

You also have a /etc/arsystem/servername/ folder with armonitor.conf file
for example.
Then when you install ARS there are some manual steps to be applied if you
don't install on root, for example some files to be copied, declaring RPC ports
in /etc/rpc/, check the installation guides for a complete list.
You also have a lot of places where the server name is written, in files like
ar.conf, all the pluginsrv_config.xml files, but also in database and some
forms (attached files, reports...).

If you just copy the files like this I doubt you'll be able to just start ARS.

As for tomcat I would go for a clean mid-tier installation, should take minutes.

3. Install Oracle on another machine say machine2

Can't create unique index in 8.1 on overlay forms?

2013-04-05 Thread laurent matheo

Hi :)I just tried to create a unique index in 8.1 and I failed to do so in some cases. On a custom form I can create unique (or not unique) indexes simply using the list which is in "unique index" column in the form "Definitions" tab, "Indexes" part.Though if I want to do so on a "base" form (let's say "HPD:Help Desk") I can't.I overlay the form.I go to "Definitions" tab, the "Indexes" part, I choose overlay type "additive" and I can click on "new" to create a new index, I can choose fields, works ok, BUT I can't choose if the index is unique or not, it seems it's set to "No" and you don't have the "list" to choose "yes".As a test I created a simple regular form and tried to define an index, I could see the "list" in "Unique" column so I can choose "yes" or "no" (03.png):I don't actually create the index and I converted my custom form to "base" and I tried to create the same index on the overlay, so:- I overlay the form.- I go to "Definitions" tab, the "Indexes" part, I
choose overlay type "additive" and I can click on "new" to create a new
index and this time no way to get the list so I can't select "yes" (04.png):The workaround I found is to:- I overlay the form.- I go to "Definitions" tab, the "Indexes" part, I
choose overlay type "additive",- I save the form,- I switch to "base development",- I open the form,- I go to "Definitions" tab, the "Indexes" part, I add the index there (I can choose "yes" or "no" there) ,- I save the form,- I switch back to "best practice" mode,- I open the overlay form,- I can see my index,Do you have the same behavior?Best regards.Laurent._ARSlist: "Where the Answers Are" and have been for 20 years_

2013-04-05 Thread Longwing, Lj
ARS 7.5

With all of my varied experiences in Remedy, Flashboards are NOT something
that I have ever needed to build or use...so I go to the community for help.

I have the need to build an 'aged tickets' report, showing something
relatively simple like counts of tickets that are 1 week old, 1 month old,
older, that sort of thing...probably in a bar graph...but can't seem to get
it to display things in the manner that I expect, so I was hoping that
someone with more hands on experience might be able/willing to help.

Hi,

By the way, here is a picture of the Swedish mobile phone MTA v2 from 1959:

Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://rrr.se

 All,

Even though it is not Friday, if found that today (April 3) marks the
40th anniversary of the first cell phone call

So since we all use them and abuse them, maybe we need to give them
the gift of cleaning our cell phone, letting them sleep in or even
buying them a nice dinner (some bits and bytes would be nice.

Re: IE8 Session Handling and Multiple Login Issue

2013-04-05 Thread D Dussie
The generic id is read restricted, acccessible to all support groups.

We have sso, however, we will need to give floating/fix license user write
access to survey form - which the users could manipulate unfavorable, after a
customer using the generic has submit survey. We have seen similiar incidents.

Possible a bug .. but its alway been like this since we had remedy 92, version
1.x on UNIX. The survey has been in place aleast 6-10 years..You can have
multiple logins, different users, as long as it is a different IE session.
with exceptiong for floating license user, they cannot login multple times,
regardless of new sessions.

Its an issue with how IE8 handles session, was hoping SW00293926 would fix it
in the upgrade to 7.604 SP 4, but same issue.

The only problem working with Working Lists is that when you create new

Renamed objects do not appear to be renamed either and sometimes at random
it does refresh the list to reflect the new name. I have not seen a trend as
to when that happens and when it doesn't

I wish at some point they fixed that although it does appear like its been
done that way by design - to perhaps not perform a search on every new save.

Hi,

If you export a packing list, I have seen that objects are sometimes missed.
I
have no clear pattern as to when this happens, but it happened a lot at a
7.6.04 site I was working on some time ago.

Check that the objects in question are actually in the def file.

You might want to try rrrexportdef.exe -packlist ..., it will not miss any
objects.

Hmmm...

The first Swedish mobile phone call was made in 1950, and the first
commercial
mobile phone system was launched in 1956.

There were only three very powerful base stations (cells?) in Sweden. The
bulky phones, which needed to be installed in cards, could be connected to
up
to three base stations.

That might not work if the value in 'DavidsEmployer' is BMC Software. For
performance reasons do not forget to index DavidsEmployer.

I wonder if you add another set fields action to set DavidsEmployer to BMC
Software if it would be caught in the testing phase..

On a custom form I can create unique (or not unique) indexes simply using the list which is in "unique index" column in the form "Definitions" tab, "Indexes" part. 2013-04-05 Thread John Baker

BMC seem to scale back their partners and increase the number again on
an almost yearly basis. There are only a finite number of decent AR
System consultants in the world (BMC certified or otherwise) and whether
they have X or X*5 partners, the people don't really change - all that
changes is the end cost to the customer.

At JSS, we're happy to work with anyone who wants to be a partner:
whether that's a single consultant who has other things to worry about
than SSO. Or, a BMC partner who wants to be known as the company that
delivered a great, secure, cost effective SSO solution.

One thing is for sure, with David's long list of BMC internal contacts
and customer knowledge, he will soon be snapped up by a partner.

Re: Can't create unique index in 8.1 on overlay forms?

2013-04-05 Thread Joe D'Souza
Then it looks like a bug.

Thanks for sharing so if I ever encounter this I know what to do to
workaround it :-)

Usually another way to work around such things is export to xml def files
and import in place after altering the def file - just in case you do not
want to go to the base development mode when things like this do not work. I
did that a lot with many of the bugs in the earlier releases of the 7.6.04
server.

Have you checked existing data in that field to make sure it was already
unique before you created a unique index?

Do a select distinct count and then a select count on that field and see if
you get a different result.

Subject: Can't create unique index in 8.1 on overlay forms?

Hi :)

I just tried to create a unique index in 8.1 and I failed to do so in some
cases.

On a custom form I can create unique (or not unique) indexes simply using
the list which is in unique index column in the form Definitions tab,
Indexes part.

Though if I want to do so on a base form (let's say HPD:Help Desk) I
can't.
I overlay the form.
I go to Definitions tab, the Indexes part, I choose overlay type
additive and I can click on new to create a new index, I can choose
fields, works ok, BUT I can't choose if the index is unique or not, it seems
it's set to No and you don't have the list to choose yes.

As a test I created a simple regular form and tried to define an index, I
could see the list in Unique column so I can choose yes or no
(03.png):

image001.jpg

I don't actually create the index and I converted my custom form to base
and I tried to create the same index on the overlay, so:
- I overlay the form.
- I go to Definitions tab, the Indexes part, I choose overlay type
additive and I can click on new to create a new index and this time no
way to get the list so I can't select yes (04.png):

image002.jpg

The workaround I found is to:
- I overlay the form.
- I go to Definitions tab, the Indexes part, I choose overlay type
additive,
- I save the form,
- I switch to base development,
- I open the form,
- I go to Definitions tab, the Indexes part, I add the index there (I
can choose yes or no there) ,
- I save the form,
- I switch back to best practice mode,
- I open the overlay form,
- I can see my index,

Do you have the same behavior?

Best regards.

Laurent.

I watched the movie Moneyball a few nights ago. Billy Beane

As of April 5th, I'm no longer an employee of BMC Software, Inc.

While my disclaimer has always stated that my participation in this
group wasn't an official function for BMC, obviously this turn of
events puts a significant kink in my continued involvement in the

This has been an amazing 7 years of my career and all of you are the
reason for that. This is the most vibrant, animated and supportive
group I've ever had the pleasure to be a part of. I've met many of
you in person, talked with even more in virtual space, but I feel
like a part of a family with all of you. I will truly miss the
opportunity to represent the brand and products that you channel so
much passion and positive energy towards.

the Send-Event run processes fail as well. Even with the * option.

I couldn't get the example from the manuals or help files to work either.
Does anyone know if this is fixed in v8? My only option that I can see is
to Open stand-alone Window, but that isn't as controllable.

loaded. That could be one possible cause without knowing the flow of your

Re: OT: April 3 marks the 40th anniversary of the first cell phone call

2013-04-05 Thread Doug Blair
There is a world of difference between mobile phones and cell phones. Mobile
hones in the 1950's and 60's were essentially a pair of one-way radios that had
a base station connected to the POTS network. We had those behemoths in the
'States too, with a rack of equipment about the size of a suitcase installed in
the auto's trunk. I don't think the base stations are still around.

Cell phones are much lower power, have lots more base stations and can do a lot
more than just talk :-)...

This is true. It won't support the *, # and what's called the A, B, C and D

Re: Approval Central Write Access Error

2013-04-05 Thread Gadgil, Abhijeet
Does this manager who is approving have any of the application write licenses?
Or
Does this manager have a user fixed license?

If answer to one of the two questions above is TRUE, you will not hit this
error.

Pl check as such.

Have you reviewed the fields causing the error. Doug Mueller has posted to the
list in the past a review of how Remedy is able to do approvals that update an
existing record with a read license.

This is a BMC application. Just the normal approval central console. Nothing
customized about it.

Thank you,

Is this a BMC aplication or a custom application. If it is a customer
application you do need a write license.

Good afternoon,

We are using 7.6.04 and the managers are receiving the attached errors when
they click on approve. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

Your guidance is much appreciated.

Re: Can't create unique index in 8.1 on overlay forms?

2013-04-05 Thread Dale Hurtt
After you change the index to unique, and if you have the ability to do so, you
might check to see if you can import the changes into another system. I once
had a def that could not be imported because it indicated that the base forms
had a conflict. The problem was more complex than this, but the bottom line was
that the overlay I was trying to import did not like that the base forms were
different on the two systems.

Also, I wonder if the overlay will contain the index information, given that
you added it to the base. If it is not in the overlay, you will probably have
to make the change to the base form on the other systems by hand.

Let us know what you find out.

Regards,

Dale Hurtt

Re: AR 7.1-AREA-cert8.db

2013-04-05 Thread Reif, Doug
Andrew,
7.5 was the first version to support cert8.db
In some cases we were able to get ARS 7.1 to work with the 7.5 LDAP libs in
order to have cert8 work on 7.1.
It didn't always work and since it's unsupported, we didn't go all out trying.
But you may find it not too difficult to use the 7.5 AREA LDAP files along
with the Mozilla libs that ship with 7.5.

I currently have a cert7.db being used with AR 7.1 for AR External
Authentication (AREA) but we need to update our certs in the cert7.db. When we
add the new certificate, it creates a cert8.db. Does anyone know if the
cert8.db will work with AR 7.1?

Thanks in advance.
