Atrium 7.6.04 SP5 Upgrade Issues

2014-04-09 Thread Simon Ellis
Since we upgraded our 7.6.04 SP4 environment to SP5 for ARS and Atrium to fix a
memory leak within our CMDB we've noticed that for our ADDM dataset populated
with a sync from ADDM the number of CI's normalised and reconciled has gone
through the roof against what is actually coming through from ADDM. Previously
we had around 11000 CI's normalised each night against the ADDM dataset and
some 40ooo CI's reconciled as well. Normalization normally took just under an
hour and recon around 2 hrs. Now were seeing nearlt 4 CI's normalised each
night and around 16 CI's reconciled as well, with normalization taking some
7 hrs and recon upto 4 hrs and both jobs now cross one another.

Has anyone else who has upgraded to 7.6.04 SP5 Atrium had any similar issues or
can anyone suggest anything untoward that may be happening.

We've had the ADDM sync turned off now for two days and we're still seeing huge
numbers normlised and reconciled each night, yet no updates are coming in from
ADDM.

Re: ADDM Synch to CMDB

2014-04-08 Thread Simon Ellis
I've had a look, and the boxed reports don't really give me what I'm looking
for. We have recon running against the ADDM dataset every morning at 01:30hrs,
and I'd like to know in the 24 hr period when the recon job has run, how many
CI's ADDM has pushed through into the dataset ready for recon. The reason
being, we recently upgraded ARS Atrium to 7.6.04 SP5and since then, recon of
the ADDM dataset has doubled in length of operation and the number of CI's
reconciled has gone up from approx 40k a night to approx. 150k a night and I'm
trying to identify as one method of analysis if ADDM is suddenly pushing
through a larger number of CI's or not.

There are reports inside of ADDM, and I'm currently on 8.3 (about to upgrade to
10) so my options may be a bit different from yours. One that may be helpful
to you is the Hosts that failed last CMDB sync report. You get to it by
clicking on the Reports tab, going under the Atrium Discovery Deployment
grouping, and a few there, most notably the one that I suggested.

If there are specific CIs that you want to verify, going into their record you
can see a CMDB synchronization section on them that gives you useful statistics
on them.

Mid Tier Oddity

Either within our DEV environment which we have just upgraded to SP5, the mid

Hotfix, when you open an Incident and go an expand any work notes created
against that Incident we are seeing text encapsulated between html tags...

spantest/span

They are however not present in thw work info history. Wasn't present before
we recently upgraded the mid tier components.

Anyone else seen this oddity? I have logged it with support and await there

Re: Why does the ARS Service take so long to start?

2014-02-19 Thread Simon Ellis
In our server group configuration start up of each server takes about 8-9
minutes, but that's due to partly BMC delivering our solution with every

Based on the feedback here and off the list, would you all consider a start
time between 2 - 3 minutes to be acceptable? I'm used to seeing a pretty long
start time but after upgrading to 8.1 it does take a little more than two
minutes, being just enough time for Windows to display an error about the
service taking too long to start.

to ADDM) but I'd think that probably is one of the limiting factors of startup.
My suspicion is that BMC's increasing reliance on plugins, which seem to be

It would be an interesting test to have two pieces of the same hardware with AR

Shawn,
In later versions of Remedy, you have the options to utilize multiple threads
during the startup. As Rick points out, the main thing that Remedy is doing is
pulling metadata out of the DB and storing it in RAM. So, there is a direct
correlation between how many forms/fields/etc that you have, and how quickly
you can get them out of the DB and into memory that determines how quickly your
Remedy starts. Do you have that dedicated Fiber channel between your DB and
App server that Remedy recommends? :)

If someone has found a way to get it to start up in less than 30 seconds, you

Development Question

2014-01-21 Thread Simon Ellis
Seemed to have stumped myself In a multi tenated solution i've created a
new panel on the HPD:Help Desk form,
added a panel holder and additional panels within that. The new panel is only
visible to members of one company.
The People records have the Company listed in the Access Restictions box of
there people record. To establish the permissions for this tab, I mapped a
role to a group and through DEV studio set permissions for the Panel so that
role/group only have access. In our DEV environment where i developed this, it
works like a dream, if you have the company listed in your people record under
access restrictions no problem you can view the tab and you can log and search
for tickets for that company. If you don't you can't see the tab/panel and you
can't log tickets for that company. When i've moved this through into our Test
environment, users with the correct access restrictions can create and search
tickets
for this company but can't view the new tab/panel. As the administrator i can.
Permissions of the form are identical.

Can't fathom out if i've missed something out, done something in DEV that i've
forgotten to move through

any ideas?

Same here. We actually finished our QA and about to start UAT on our upgrade
from version 8.0 to 8.1p002.
Found a few timezone related issues which we are working with BMC to resolve.
Our users are global with some areas of the application using site local times.
For us timezone is very important, other than that we did not see any
stability issues so far.
Our current production version 8.0 was also very stable. It has been in
production for more than an year.
We are on linux6.x and Oracle11. So far seems to be stable.

also encountered issues with the mid-tier and the use of a reverse proxy as

Hi,

We are planning the upgrade from 7.6.4 to 8.1. Wondering what others have
experienced with a 7.6.4 to 8x upgrade. Our company feels this upgrade is
going to be “very difficult.” We have never archived any data. There were over
100 hotfixes applied to 7.6.4. Besides the release notes, is there any
documentation to help with this painful process ☺ Are there any gotchas?
Recommendations?

Another weird thing is if you bring a new incident up within the User Tool the
Incident ID field displays the Incident ID numberThought it might be a
cache issue... have flushed both server and local caches and still via the Mid
Tier it's displaying the phone Number. our other environments which are
identical are fine

If it's a regular form, it should just show up, but if it isn't showing up,
your form must be in a deployable application, which means you need to create a

Fine-tuning or adjusting configuration parameters after installing CMDB or other AtriumCore applications

2013-10-03 Thread Simon Ellis
Currently in the process of carrying out the suggested activities in
https://kb.bmc.com/infocenter/index?page=contentid=KA370107

Have an issue when applying Plugin-ARDBC-Threads: 4 12 in the ar.conf.

What i am observing is activities within the User Tool become un responsive
when accessing areas like the System Information form. In our dev environment
BMC Support suggested making the following parameter changes:

Private-RPC-Socket: 390620 4 6 to Private-RPC-Socket: 390620 10 15
Private-RPC-Socket: 390635 4 10 to Private-RPC-Socket: 390635 10 20

This worked there, and i could keep the Plugin-ARDBC-Threads: 4 12 in the
ar.conf as well. However as i've gone through to applying the same changes to
our test environment, i can only get the tool to work properly with the
Plugin-ARDBC-Threads: 4 12 parameter commented out in the ar.conf file.

Anyone had similar issues applying these changes? What's the significance of
the Plugin-ARDBC-Threads: 4 12 parameter? Can i just leave it out?

Tis is all on a linux setup. Have ensured the correct owner and group are

Cannot see any java out of memory errors that maybe impacting the reports being

Hi All,

I have created some pretty large AIE and Reconciliation Engine jobs in a
development 7.6.04 environment. I have exported both the AIE configuration and
the Reconciliation jobs to .ARX files. I am having issues importing them into
my production environment using Data Import. When I run the import against the
AIE ARX file, I only get the CI Class Mappings imported. I do not get my Data
Exchanges, Relationship Class or AR System Form Mappings imported. When I run
the import of the Reconciliation jobs, I get nothing. has anybody imported
these files into 7.6.04 and what tricks did you use to get everything over?

Thanks!

Atrium Upgrade to SP4

2013-05-05 Thread Simon Ellis
Completed an upgrade of Atrium to SP4 last week and have gone to verify the
aitrium integration engine and have noticed that post upgrade the file name
path in all our mappings for any of our data exchanges has changed.

For example pre upgrade the path to where the data file was located was
specified in the mapping as:

/appl/BMC/AtriumCore/aie/service/data/NewTCNZ_ComputerSystem

Post upgrade the path specified is now:

/appl/BMC/AtriumCore/aie/service/datadata/NewTCNZ_ComputerSystem

It's changed everything to look up everything in a folder called datadata which
doesn't exist. I'm now stumped as to how to correct this.

I can export everything out of one of our NPE environments and place over the
top. I can export everything to an .arx file and manually amend the entries
and then import them back in.

IS there any better way of correcting the file name path in a mapping?

Anyone know why this happened?

I am trying to install ARS 7.6.04 SP4 It never asks if I am upgrading. The
system bombs out at the very end. It tells me that the database information is
incorrect. I looked in the BMC KB and all I could find there was that my
server name was too long!

FQDN - xxRemedy7tx.xx.org
Alias - xxRemedy7tx.xx

I used the standard xx#x# password.

Any ideas?

BMC KB Solution:
You need to have the short server name for the Server Name field during the SP4
installer.

Database access errors are another possible cause, check the install log for
messages such as:
{Description=[Failed to check database connection,DB server],Detail=[ORA-01017:
invalid username/password; logon denied]}

The database error is likely the password is incorrect and it is recommended to
type the password even if you see the password field already populated.

Error Messages at the end of the install:
1) LOG EVENT {Description=[[SQLERROR] [DESCRIPTION] Failed to get database
connection],Detail=[[SQLERRORCODE]=1017 [SQLMESSAGE]=ORA-01017: invalid
username/password; logon denied]}

It will help to know what version to what version you'll are trying to move
from and your current architecture and environment.. Without which it is
only possible to give you very generalized information.

One advise that will work irrespective of what your architecture and
environment is, is that you got to give it a whole lot of more memory and
processing power than your previous version.

I have other than that not run into anything 'major' that's worth talking
about (considering that everyone these days knows you got to prepare your
apps if they have been customized, to compare the differences to create an
overlay layer).

Hi All,

I watched the movie Moneyball a few nights ago. Billy Beane (general
manager for the Oakland A's) had advice for delivering bad news - just give it
to 'em straight. So here goes.

As of April 5th, I'm no longer an employee of BMC Software, Inc.

While my disclaimer has always stated that my participation in this group
wasn't an official function for BMC, obviously this turn of events puts a
significant kink in my continued involvement in the ARSList. :-) Note that
this is in no way a result of the April Fool's posting that I sent out... lest
someone jump to an errant conclusion. I won't be able to discuss any details
of the situation, but you guys deserved to hear the news straight from the
horse's a er... mouth.

This has been an amazing 7 years of my career and all of you are the reason
for that. This is the most vibrant, animated and supportive group I've ever
had the pleasure to be a part of. I've met many of you in person, talked with
even more in virtual space, but I feel like a part of a family with all of you.

Haven't tried it on a server group yet, but I don't see why you would need
to do any of that either. It doesn't alter the database structure so the
other servers in the server group should still be able to connect when one
has been patched.

But I don't see why you would leave some servers unpatched. I would do them
all one after the other..

The only thing I would do (although I do not see the need to) is stop the
service on the other servers too and declare a maintenance outage..

I have done this mostly on Windows with no gotchas or anything to report.

I've spent a LOT of time on this with BMC support and I wanted to know if
anyone else had similar problems and how they fixed it.

Essentially we can not get FTS to remain stable. It will always eventually
crash and need to be restarted, which essentially means restarting ARS since
its' a plugin.

We have Suse linux servers in the server group that are VM's. The mount points
where the application is installed is pretty fast NAS (SAN? one of the two) and
the index files live here as well.

BMC has told us - by way of Lucene, which is the underlying product - that the
actual mechanism that writes to SAN/NAS drives is not good for the types of
file operations which FTS does in order to do it's work. Essentially we always
end up with some form of file lock or read error. In short, you have to have
an actual physical drive hooked up the box to make this work.

That's NOT happening in our environment.

Essentially there's a problem - BMC is saying they support VM's, but FTS can
use virtual disks - and it's not really BMC's fault so much as the fault of the
underlying engine.

Anyone else run into this? Heck, we are getting FTS errors at times when it's
been turned OFF for weeks.

ADDM Synchronization causing AR Server memory leak

2013-02-04 Thread Simon Ellis
HI,

Has anyone encountered a situation whereby the synchronization of data between
ADDM and AR Admin server has caused the physical memory on the ar server to be
chewed up?

We are seeing between 6% 8% of physical memory on our ar server is being
chewed up on a daily basis whilst the ADDM synch (which runs continuosly) is
turned on. We've turned it off a couple of times recently and memory has then
remained static. Turn it on again and it goes up. Currently we're getting
about 20 days before we have to restart the stack as all physical memory and
swap has been consumed.

Memory Leak Main Admin Server (Unix)

2013-01-29 Thread Simon Ellis
Has anyone experienced physical memory leaks on there main admin server in a
server group configuration? We're running 7.6.04 on RedHat 5 with 4 ar
servers. The three ar servers the users connect through via the mid tier show
stable physical memory at between 40% 50%, yet our main admin server is
progressively comsuming between 4% 8% physical memory each day and it doesn't
get released. Currently we're getting about 20-25 days before we have to
restart the stack.

We installed tcmalloc as a memory manager process back in October as any
caching activities (adding spg's/sla's) was consuming memory which in itself
was never being released. tcmalloc allowed us to stabilise that. None of the
log's are showing anything untoward happening on the box.

Apart from user ITSM activity we have ADDM synch into the cmdb, reconciliation
activities, normalization and AIE data exchanges going on.

Anyone else experienced or experiencing non releasing physical memory on their
admin servers?

We do have a ticket logged with support.

has to strip the enters out before it's even loaded into Remedy, which means

Re: Anyone on the list ever tried the TC Malloc fix for ARS (Applies to Linux ARS Servers Only)?

2013-01-13 Thread Simon Ellis
We implemented this back in October within our redhat environment. It does
work. However we are still experiencing memory issues when any system process
crashes and armonitor recovers. A couple of times when the recon process
crashed with a signal 11, the memory manager cannot handle it and the physical
memory justs goes up and up until eventually it gives up and we have to restart
the application.

But with everything okay these settings do work. Reaching activities are much
better with tcmalloc installed.

Re: ***Error: Number of tokens exceed the number of columns***

Hi there,

Another interesting fact is that the site entry is identical for all records,
so I'm importing say 100 CI's all for the same site and every other record is
skipped. I did look and see if there was any extra characters or magic spaces,
but nothing. Also with the dos2unix conversion of the csv all fields are
encapsulated within double quotes, but it's not every separated element. It
would be strange to put it round every other record when the proceeding one

Is there a reason you don't simply have Splunk configured to monitor the

Ken,
It sounds like your arserver was bouncing up against a upper memory limit.
This can happen sometimes with memory leaks that don't properly release memory
once used. A restart of the service brings the system back down to initial
minimums of startup. You may want to make sure that you are on the most recent
patch of 7.5 to ensure that any known issues are taken care of properly.

Ken,
It sounds like your arserver was bouncing up against a upper memory limit.
This can happen sometimes with memory leaks that don't properly release memory
once used. A restart of the service brings the system back down to initial
minimums of startup. You may want to make sure that you are on the most recent
patch of 7.5 to ensure that any known issues are taken care of properly.

**

We are getting this error intermittently over the past couple of weeks. The
most consistent time it is occurring is when trying to attach a largish
attachment (around 4MB). Some have also received it when trying to open an
attachment. Yesterday for awhile we were getting the error anytime the SDA's
were trying to attach any attachment to an Incident. I ended up restarting the
ar server service.

Has anybody run across something similar? (Arerr 300 when working with
attachments)

I have a support request in with BMC and waiting for a reply. The KB articles I
found did not seem to apply.

Thanks

Re: Bulk Load CI Relationships

We're trying to associate/relate hardware to contracts, don't think this does
it for us...

Shouldn't this be handled via the license jobs on the SAM Console in 7.6.4?
The way I've done it is to load the data in through various means to create the
CIs, and the license jobs (which you have to build, but can be fairly generic)
can relate them to the Contracts in an automated fashion. If you are on an
older version like 7.0.3 it's even easier since there is no need for license
jobs and the CIs just become related upon creation.

Thanks,

Is it possible with the tool to bulk load the relationship of a CI to a
Contract? I can bulk load through the Transactional-Contract.xls spreadsheet
via the Data Load Console the relationship between a contract and a Master
Contract. But I would like to be able to bulk load via any means the
relationship of a CI to be associated with a contract. Is this possible? How
would you implement this? Or where would I need to start looking to be able to
perform this function?

Looking at the Transactional-Contract.xls spreadsheet no other tab jumps out at
me as being able to perform this function.

7.6.04 Knowledge Management Search results

2012-09-25 Thread Simon Ellis
Hi,

got a customer request whereby when they perform a Knowledge Search within
Knowledge Management they wish to exclude from the returned results all
articles that are retired. Not sure where to start looking, certainly can't
find anything in the advanced search criteria they could set themselves, was
wondering if there was anywhere in the workflow i could look to see if i could
limit the returned results, but don't know where to start looking.

2012-09-25 Thread Simon Ellis
Thanks for that Carl, certainly does that for them, though they have asked for
a permanent solution whereby they don't need to specify whether the Article
Status is Published or Not...

Hi,
this is based on permissions.
If no RKM permissions are assigned, then the user will only see Published
articles. RKM Viewer and above can see all articles in Draft or a Review stage.

You can also specify in the advanced criteria to only search for articles based
on Article Status, but this would be for a set Status value.

Cheers
Carl
