Yes you are wrong... if you search the group archives you would see that i visited AP several months ago after being subjected to all the positive hype about how its been rebuilt, restored, remade, blah, blah, blah. What a huge disapointment.. i posted my thoughts about how could so little have been done in 6 or 7 years...i wrote about the horrible treatment of the bandshell building and how cheap the container buildings and monotonous stucco looked. There is something seriously wrong down there and the locals seem to be blind to it...the popular chants being 'its better than it was' and 'so much has improved in the last year' or 'give it time'. I think you all need to get out and go someplace where real redevelopment happens, it doesn't take years, glorify shipping containers, stucco over historic buildings or drive the town into financial ruin. Last i heard the entire beachfront was supposed to be done by Memorial day, it wasn't, then i heard Labor Day... it it all done ??? == Gab, Your missing a very significant aspect of Asbury Park. Many people have never been here yet follow the news and care about the City. Its reasonable to have expectations based upon the news hype thats put out. Most likely you have not followed the workings here as long as others who may not even live here ? By all accounts this entire redevelopment should be completed by now. Thats what the public was/is told. Is it any wonder that a visitor is disappointed by shipping containers, vacant lots, monotonous architecture and little to show for all the hype? Werner Yahoo! first i would like to see it in a form that is accessible to non wonks. it is total greek to me in its current state. i would think the city or the budget committee would make it accessible to citizens in a way that is easily comprehensible. only one person expressed any desire to talk about it. maybe a way to look at it is...doesn't really matter what has happened in the past, or who did what. but just...what do we have? what do we need and how can citizens help? Why do you have to explain this? If everyone allegedly believes in equality then everyone is the same. Unfortunately this is not the case today for some reason everyone things that they have more rights than everyone else. They don't want equality they want more rights than everyone else. I really think you should publish! You impress me as being someone who really cares for the City, didn't want the publicity, but garnered it, after the way you were kicked to the curb! Very disgraceful! Like the Bushes, this City seems to not care for intellectuals; you know, people who actually KNOW something? The scientific world both you and I emerged from, makes us all the more curious, to present FACTS, instead of the fairy tale being dished out to an unknowing public. New people wouldn't KNOW that Asbury Park has a Master Plan, its original design and what it's founder, whose probably rolling over in his grave, would be more sympathetic, if they actually KNEW the History! The commercial aspects of Asbury Park were its' boardwalk, amusements like the Palace and the Swan boats, the City Pool, the movie theatres, all gone except the Baronet and Paramount, (Is the Savoy intact), were the draw to weary city dwellers and North Jerseyans. I only have to say that I live in Asbury Park, anywhere I go and the questions come like a flood! I only say positive things but I wished Asbury had kept a Carousel, its' symbol and draw! Hey, I can go anywhere and have cocktails, but when I think of the boardwalk, I see the monorail, the teacup rides, miniature golf, Madam Marie and the kitschy stores and candy shops! I keep my memories locked up in this tiny head; of my children who thought Asbury Park for kids, was a little bit of heaven and of this place being Coney Island, south! All I know is, I moved here from a very large city, to what I thought was a piece of New England, only to learn this is a Mid-Atlantic State! Looks like New England in November, especially 11 stories up, where I am; a little bit of Heaven. RE: [AsburyPark] Re: On Asbury....
Hi Mike---If you ever think cats have no use for people except for food you need to experience a heartbreaking encounter with three little senior cats we just took into our sanctuary. They lived at Phillips Seaview Towers with their owner, a woman who had her leg amputated. She cherished these girls, giving them her heart and soul. At the untimely age of 50 something she passed away a few weeks ago. Luckily a wonderful Russian woman who lives there, Olga, got in contact with us the day before they were going to be taken away to be euthanized. They are with us now and are the sweetest, most adorable cats you would ever want to meet. We call them The Golden Girls! Ellen Carroll has been nice enough to ask Don Stine to do a story for us in The Coaster next week to make people aware of the need to plan for your pets in case of health or economic crisis. Of course The Golden Girls will be featured as we would love to find a loving home for them. To get back to the point, when Tabitha, Noelle and Pumpkin came to us they did not care about food. They were grieving for a love lost and all they wanted was comfort and a warm body to snuggle against. They are doing better now but still only want to be loved!!! There appears to be huge contradiction in your concerns. On the one hand you write about discussing the City budget and questioning political leadership. On the other you don't care about redevelopment timelines. They are in essence the same topic, how do you reconcile separating them in your Asbury Park view? Werner I guess I just care about different things than you do. I have no problem with the progress of the Boardwalk. If its been slow due to shady dealings thats one thing. But if its simply red tape, financial situations, permits unplanned for I can understand that. and while it may provoke an eyeroll when there are boards across a new staircase, in the big picture i just cant get too upset about it. is the city communicating about the failure to meet the timelines? I think in general, any leadership in government should always be questioned. And it would be great if citizens were willing to talk more freely and intelligently about decisions and people in power and not based on any personal affiliation or benefit. It would be great if governments fostered citizen participation...meetings filmed, documents easily accessible and free of charge (PDF). My concern about city dealings comes from being a NJ citizen all my life and witnessing some pretty mediocre behavior coming from the dais. Ultimately what is beginning to bother me more is not the behavior of leaders, but that of citizens. Long discussion, but we are basically trained to be unquestioning workers and consumers. its what our public education was created to do. Yahoo! Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi Mike---If you ever think cats have no use for people except for food you need to experience a heartbreaking encounter with three little senior cats we just took into our sanctuary === Thanks, Debbie. Interesting piece here about changing attitudes regarding men and cats: Sorry, Fido, It’s Just a Guy Thing October 5, 2008 from _http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/fashion/05cats.html?ref=stylepagewanted=all_ (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/fashion/05cats.html?ref=stylepagewanted=all) IF you ask Adam Fulrath who is the love of his life, he will barely blink an eye before responding: Parappa. Mr. Fulrath, a 37-year-old design director at Time Out New York, keeps five photographs of Parappa, a shorthaired, bicolored, mixed-breed cat, on his desktop. He knows that it might be considered a little weird that a grown man would be so enamored with his kitty, but Mr. Fulrath, who is into video games and comic books and calls himself a “straight, geeky guy,” doesn’t care. “She’s my primary relationship,” he said. Mr. Fulrath is one of a growing number of single — and yes, heterosexual — men who seem to be coming out of the cat closet and unabashedly embracing their feline side. To that end, they are posting photographs and videos of their little buddies on YouTube and on Web sites like _menandcats.com_ (http://menandcats.com/) , and Twittering about them to anyone who will listen. Indeed, it seems that man’s best friend is no longer a golden retriever, but a cuddly cat named Fluffy. This movement, such as it is, is in direct contrast to the most notable in the recent spate of reports about the relationship between a man and a cat, which were far darker; they focused on a young actor who was recently on trial in New York City for killing his girlfriend’s cat — he said it attacked him — only to have a jury decide after several days that it could not reach a verdict. If it had been a little less violent, that case might have been more in line with what the world seems to expect of men and cats. The image of the crazy spinster cat lady persists, and plenty of people do wonder about a guy with a cat. As a writer on _adventuresofacitygirl.blogspot.com_ (http://adventuresofacitygirl.blogspot.com/) put it: “Single men and cats are like a burger and broccoli. Separately they are okay, but together it just seems off.” But those who see a growing link between men and cats see that attitude (not to mention the cat slaying) as old-fashioned. Clea Simon, who wrote “The Feline Mystique: On the Mysterious Connection Between Women and Cats,” said: “I do think it has become more acceptable for men to own cats — partly for practical reasons, like the growing realization that they’re better city pets, and partly the whole acceptance of our cross-gender traits that men crave intimacy, too.” Stacy Mantle, the founder of _Petsweekly.com_ (http://petsweekly.com/) , a magazine for pet lovers, said that men are becoming more “cat literate” because they themselves are evolving. “It’s the unevolved members of the species who tend toward abuse of cats — and oftentimes, women and children,” said Ms. Mantle, who owns 18 cats. Although there are no hard (or soft) statistics (it is rare to find an owner, man or woman, walking a cat in public), it seems that single, heterosexual male cat owners are on the rise. Over the last few years Sandra DeFeo, an executive director at the Humane Society of New York, said she had seen an increase in the number of single, straight men who are adopting cats. Carole Wilbourn, a cat therapist (yes, really) in Manhattan, said that the number of her single, straight male clients has risen about 25 percent over the last five years. When the Web site _PetPlace.com_ (http://petplace.com/) asked its readers, “ Do Real Men Own Cats?” almost 84 percent of respondents said “yes.” “Only intelligent, aware, caring men love cats,” one reader said. And in a 2005 survey by Cats Protection, an animal welfare agency in the United Kingdom, the majority of the 790 people who responded said it was cool for a guy to own cats. This line of thinking does not surprise cat lovers, many of whom believe that only pillars of virility and masculinity would dare to own one. They are quick to point out other well-known macho cat owners: _Ernest Hemingway_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/h/ernest_hemingway/index.h tml?inline=nyt-per) , _Mark Twain_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/c/samuel_langhorne_clemens/index.html?inline=nyt-per) , Victor Hugo and _Marlon Brando_ (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/b/marlon_brando/index.html?inline=nyt-per) , who reportedly found a stray cat on the

You're right, which is why AP and the shore in general is ripe for an alternative press. The Ledger thinks Jersey ends at the Raritan, the Press has been utterly useless for ten years now, and the Coaster seems well-intentioned but not given to much in the way of investigative reporting. A weekly, like the City Paper in Philly or the Boston Phoenix, would give writers the opportunity to fully explain, magazine style, issues pertaining to a particular aspect of city life - so instead of just reporting what was discussed at a council meeting, the paper would give a complete background, like Maureen does as AsburyRadio.com, and really explain why this matters to the person reading, whether they're a doctor on Grand Ave. or a tattoo artist on Main. Find out whether its red tape or shadiness that's keeping things in limbo. Find out why so and so was indicted or why someone was suddenly fired for no apparent reason. Education, redevelopment, crime, social issues, health issues, everything could be covered. And then you round it out with arts coverage. Make it free so you can pump circulation to attract advertisers while also encouraging people who don't normally read the news to do so. They pick it 'cause Method Man's on the cover, but they keep reading and find out why MM missed YET another deadline and then maybe they get pissed off enough to go to the next council meeting. I know, another pipe dream. It can't hurt to imagine. Yahoo!
