I'm wondering where they got the number 28 from? They were in sets of 3, and there are 9 groups of windows. That makes 27, unless there is a single one that belongs elsewhere. Anyone know? RE: [AsburyPark] Re: This is an absolute outrage
Ah, I see now. Thanks for clarifying :) They must be HUGE panels if one panel fits under 3 windows. In that case, taking into consideration the historical value, I would think that their value would be much, much more than $100k! Keeping my fingers crossed for a good outcome~ Jenni -Original Message- From: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com [mailto:AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of arcman210 Sent: Friday, March 30, 2012 12:23 AM To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com Subject: [AsburyPark] Re: This is an absolute outrage They're from the three sides of the buildings (north, south, and east). Each group of three windows would have been one panel. The north and south side each have 9 window bays, and I'm assuming the ocean side would have 10 bays (not commonly seen or photographed). Where were these panels stored when they were taken down? And why weren't they put back up when the work was done? They've been down for well over a year, maybe two (the article says MM claims they were stolen in late 2011), and I can't tell you the last time I've seen workers doing anything on that area of Convention Hall (or any part of CH for that matter). --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jenni jenni@... wrote: I'm wondering where they got the number 28 from? No, but for each person who feels comfortable and happy buying that one cup of coffee, most are going to come back another time and spend more $, bring friends or business associates, etc. It will keep the place in business if you keep the people happy without sacrificing all the profits, and encourage them to make it a comfortable place where they can meet people for coffee, lunch, etc., word of mouth is also the best advertising, so that person with the single cup of coffee who stays an hour may end up sending multiple others. RE: [AsburyPark] Re: Downtown paid parking went into effect today
What I'm not understanding here is that it was just pointed out that during the day, Mattison Ave is completely empty. So, there seems to be plenty of parking at the current time. I can see that the parking that is available will fill up quickly as businesses grow, and there should be plans in the works to accommodate that, but it seems perfectly reasonable to park on Mattison to grab a cup of coffee, or whatever... is it just that people are insisting to park directly in front of whatever business they're frequenting? RE: [AsburyPark] A Bit of History...
Very interesting, thanks for sharing!!! The big question now, is: are these two amusements still being stored? Wouldn't it be wonderful if the Ferris Wheel could be installed along the boardwalk, and the original Palace carousel could be installed in the Carousel House at the Casino? Wow. Jenni -Original Message- From: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com [mailto:AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of wernerapnj Sent: Saturday, October 15, 2011 9:27 PM To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com Subject: [AsburyPark] A Bit of History... or... Missed Opportunities... 1888 Carousel House and Palace Recent History By G. DOROTHY SABATINI June 8, 2004 In the summer of 1998, a hundred years after the carousel house within the Palace Amusements building was constructed, a story broke of its eminent demolition. A vast curiosity caught hold of some prior residents and visitors to the Jersey Shore regarding this 1888 treasure. Due to a quote in an article about the pending demolition, Asbury Park Historical Society founder, Werner Baumgartner, was contacted by a number of individuals who were interested in doing whatever they could to help save one of the last pieces of the history of Asbury Park. Greg Raymer, of Colorado, was one of the interested parties. In speaking with Baumgartner, he said he had been in contact with the Mississippi theme park owners who purchased the Ferris wheel from Henry Vaccaro. According to Raymer, the park was closing and selling the Ferris wheel. It was being sold for $5,000 and the theme park had a possible purchaser willing to pay $4,000. Raymer was a frequent visitor to the shore area, and especially to Asbury Park. He loved the shore so much that he created a Jersey Shore themed pizza restaurant in Colorado. On a trip to the theme park in Mississippi where the Ferris wheel and carousel were being dismantled and sold, he made a videotape of the still-standing Ferris wheel, which he forwarded to Baumgartner. The Ferris wheel, along with the original carousel, had been sold to the park in 1989. Raymer said because the park was closing, the items needed to remove by October 30, 1998. Another interested party, a Long Branch resident, who contacted Baumgartner after he heard the Ferris wheel was up for sale, said he was willing to donate $2,500 to the historical society for the repurchasing of the Ferris wheel because he would like to see Asbury Park have a part of its history returned. In the meantime, an unnamed benefactor, who had serious resources, came forward and contacted Baumgartner about saving the Ferris wheel, and possibly the Palace Amusements building itself. Baumgartner showed the videotape Raymer made to this businessman and he became very interested in preserving these historical landmarks of Asbury Park. The, aforementioned, benefactor sent representatives to the site to assess what needed to be done in order to dismantle and pack up the Ferris wheel for transport. After which Mr. Benefactor began serious negotiations with the owner, Mr. Williams, to purchase the wheel. Williams informed him he also had the original carousel up for sale. At the time, the benefactor did not want any publicity interfering in the situation, so he asked Baumgartner not to reveal his name, until he was able to secure the purchases. Williams and Mr. Benefactor agreed on a purchase price for both items. Mr. Benefactor wanted to store them at one of his properties in Monmouth County until he could find a suitable place to erect them in Asbury Park where they belonged. Of course, the most suitable place would be the Palace Amusements Building. Though the fate of the building was still precarious, Mr. Benefactor was also considering negotiating with Mr. Carabetta (owner at the time), and the City, regarding purchasing the building. During the first week in December 1998, Mr. William Sitar, the CEO of Sitar Company, came forward and announced that his efforts of the previous several months to bring Asbury Park's Ferris wheel, and carousel, back to New Jersey had finally paid off. It took four tractor-trailers to load all the parts, and within a week the convoy arrived in Tinton Falls with the items, where they have been stored on the site of one of Mr. Sitar's properties, the Twin Brooks Golf Center. Through the combined efforts of these individuals, William Sitar, owner of a large real estate company, as well as other businesses in NJ, Gregory Raymer, owner of the Boardwalk Cafe and Pizzeria, a Jersey Shore themed business in Colorado, Werner Baumgartner, historian, and founder of the Asbury Park Historical Society, the original Ferris Wheel and carousel, which once stood inside the Palace Amusements building for almost 100 years returned to the Jersey Shore, after ten years in a Mississippi Theme Park. Speaking of the wheel, it isn't really a Ferris wheel. The original carousel pavilion, a 100 foot square structure part of the Palace Amusements building, was built to house

I think that the art aspect is wonderful, but why limit a city that's always been so diverse with just one thing? Let's not pigeonhole Asbury - rather, let's embrace its diversity, and utilize that. As for the question earlier about where the Revision would relocate to, there are a few ideas, but the first one is that if the Casino is rebuilt as it was supposed to be, there would be plenty of room to move it inward some, perhaps the area where the old fun house was? Or, better yet, it could use another building that is currently empty - last I checked, there was still nothing in the old Hitching Rail / Higgenbottom's Pizza Pub building adjacent to the Pony, that is longer and narrower but I think roughly the same square footage as the Carousel House. Also, aren't the upstairs areas of Convention Hall still not being used? Just a few thoughts! RE: [AsburyPark] Re: Beach Fees after Labor Day?
There are no lifeguards on most SC beaches. The few beaches that do have lifeguards are state parks so they require an admission fee. My thought on this has always been that it's great to have the lifeguards and charge a fee, but that residents of that county (or at least that town) should not have to pay. Which leads me to my next question, and maybe I am beating a dead horse here--why does New Jersey continue to put up with beach fees? No other state in the entire country charges for beaches unless they are part of a state park. And every state I know provides lifeguards, beach maintenance, etc. as part of their state budget. In the most densely populated state in the country, there is no excuse for this except poor budgeting. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Groups Links Yahoo! I had just moved from Asbury to OG the winter that we had the huge Nor'easter, I think '91 or '92... I can't say for Asbury, but I know that we were the only ones who didn't leave OG during a mandatory evacuation, and the power was out on my block for 6 weeks. The side of OG near Broadway was back up faster, I was on Pitman so not too far from Asbury, and we were the last ones in the county to get back up and running. I think that all of Asbury was out for at least a week or so, though. I remember that even Seaview Mall in Ocean was out for around a week, their emergency generator came on for a bit but then failed. RE: [AsburyPark] Re: Upperclass boardwalk and downtown?
Is this group really that bent on color now? I don't understand why this is an issue... I also thought that this group was not only for people who currently live in Asbury Park, but anyone who has concerns about it and loves the town. Since we're posting online, and don't see one another (unless anyone knows another outside of this group), we don't see what one another look like, which really shouldn't matter. So, here's me. I currently live in Charleston, SC I grew up on Unami Ave in Wanamassa, just a few blocks from the Sunset Bridge. I spent much of my youth at or near the Asbury boardwalk. I lived as a young adult in Asbury, at 301 Sunset (the beige/brown house on the corner of, I think, Webb) I have always loved the character and architecture of Asbury Park, and have always greatly wished for it to become safe and restored to its original beauty I miss Asbury Park, and wish that it were safe (and affordable) for me to move back there. I still think of this area as home Oh, and for those of you who are really particular about what color someone's skin is, I happen to be white. Personally, I could care less what your skin looks like as long as you are a decent person. That's me. Anything else you want to know, please ask. I'm on this group because I care about this city. I still like the idea someone had on here awhile back. Make the assistance - section 8, welfare, food stamps, etc, contingent on the kids having acceptable grades. Also make it contingent upon the parents attempting to get work or better their lives in some way. If the pattern is broken, the problem will gradually be reduced, if not eliminated. The trouble is that it's passed down from one generation to the next, in rapid succession since a generation in this area is often 14-16 yrs. RE: [AsburyPark] Re: the guy who couldn't read...
If they don't get decent grades (or at least passing), the family loses the funding. We are paying billions of dollars in tax money for assistance programs for people who could care less about improving themselves, all they are doing is passing the same problem on to the next generation. There are, of course, exceptions - people who have fallen upon hard times and are doing the best that they can. That is exactly what the programs are designed for. But the vast majority that are on welfare or other government programs do not even try to better their situations. Laws need to be changed so that if they want the assistance, they earn it. If they don't want to make the effort, they lose the assistance and are on their own to figure it out. -Original Message- From: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com [mailto:AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of dfsavgny Sent: Tuesday, August 16, 2011 11:01 PM To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com Subject: [AsburyPark] Re: the guy who couldn't read... dont have to be good grades but improvement and trying. when there is an incentive perhaps parents will make be involved and that is what is missing. Asbury Park (was RE: [AsburyPark] Re: Black Like Me)
Hey, Oakdorf, I grew up on Unami... don't know your age, or even your name, but maybe we knew each other :) I went to Ocean, class of '88. On another note, I could care less about race as well. I grew up so close to the Asbury bridge, spent lots of time on and near the boardwalk growing up, always went to the Asbury beach when I was a kid. I loved the architecture from the time I was tiny, everything from the façade of Convention Hall, the copper of the Casino, to the big Victorian homes not far from the beach. As a young adult, I lived at 301 Sunset, first in a small second floor apartment, and then in the larger 1st floor apartment. And yes, we had both white and black (and a Hispanic family briefly when I first moved in) residents in the building, and we all got along just fine. I live in SC now, moved for work some years back, and would love to go back to NJ. I looked into it a couple of years ago, but I cannot begin to afford it. One alternative would have been to live in Asbury, since it's cheaper. Why didnt I? The crime. I realize that if the crime were eradicated, then it probably would no longer be remotely affordable. But it's far too scary as it is, and I dont want to have to live with that fear day to day. I'm a single woman, disabled, and not as able to defend myself as I was at one time. And these days, they don't just beat you up, they all have guns, even the kids. I miss Asbury. I joined this group because of that. I would really like to see something done to make it a nice place again. I remember when I was a kid, my friend's great grandmother used to tell us stories about Asbury Park when she was a newlywed and moved there with her husband. This would have been in the 19-teens or so. I dont remember the specifics of what she told us, really wish I'd recorded all she had to say! But, I do remember the general feeling of all she described. What a fabulous place. And it can be, again. FYI, racism is awful here in Charleston. Worse than anywhere else I've ever lived. It's one of the many reasons I want to get away from here. Here, all the whites hate the blacks, and the blacks hate the whites... or if it isnt outright hatred, at the very least they ignore one another... it is crazy. I dont see why we can't just all get along. We're all people. I have no idea, unless someone brings it up, what color anyone on this board is. For all I know, some of you could be green with pink polka dots. I could care less. What I do care about, is Asbury Park, and as long as everyone is busy squabbling about what color they are, nothing will change. I realize that since I'm not a current resident there, there's not a lot I can do to help, but I'd like to if the opportunity arises. Those of you who are current residents have much more power in this, because you're the ones electing the city officials. No, her name was Michele Lepore. I can't remember her grandmother's name now, but it was her paternal grandmother's mother. So this woman had a different last name. She lived on Sunset Ave, close to the Wanamassa bridge, on the south side of the street. I can't remember the exact house now, but it was probably only about 4-5 houses, maybe 6, down from the beach. And I think I remember correctly in that it was prior to 1920 that she moved there. She was quite elderly when I knew her in the early 1980s, probably in her 80s, and she had married as a teen. They honeymooned in Asbury, and then moved there within a year or so because they loved it so much. I've been reading bits and pieces of this thread. And, of course, I no longer live in Asbury, even though I do love the place so much! One thing that has come to mind. I remember when I rented an apartment in Asbury, many moons ago, that before I could move in, an inspector had to come out and give an approval for a c/o. The place was approved fine, but it occurred to me that if this was still being enforced - and being enforced on the west side just as much as the east - that it would force out the slum lords, which would in turn force out many of the tenants who instigate the crimes. Does anyone on here know if this is still a requirement, or if it is at all being enforced? Generally speaking of course, if the landlord takes pride in the property and keeps it fixed up, it attracts a better class of resident. Just my two cents! RE: [AsburyPark] Re: Two more shootings last night
No, race has nothing to do with it, and wealth doesn't always either. When I was a landlord (a house in MD that I co-owned), I was extremely cautious about who I rented to. I wanted references, and wanted to ensure that their previous dwellings were left in good shape, that they were not trouble in any way. Now I am sure that there are people who commit crimes that also are very nice tenants, but I think that is not common. It would seem that if the landlords have to fix the place up, they would be very concerned about it being kept nice, so would be more inclined to screen applicants carefully. NO! Haven't we lost enough of the city's architecture??? Clearly this is going in the wrong direction. Every time I see the rotting skeleton that was once the gorgeous Casino, it makes me sick to my stomach. RE: [AsburyPark] Re: How NOT to make a few thousand dollars an hour....
What they do here in Charleston, SC, is to put meters on all the spaces, BUT the spaces that are in residential streets have either one hour or two hour limits on them. The meter maids go around and chalk the tires so they'll know if the same cars are still there. It's not a great solution, but does deter some of the tourists from parking there. I think they could do MUCH better, though. When I lived in Asbury, it was a ghost town (late 80s), so parking was never an issue even 2 blocks from the beach. But, I recall what a nightmare it was for me when I lived in Ocean Grove (1st block from the beach). On most summer evenings, after a long day at work, I usually had to park anywhere from 3-10 blocks from my house, and that was after spending a lot of time driving around looking for a spot. Of course there are no driveways where I was, so the street was the only option. That was the main reason why I left that town, otherwise I loved living there. RE: [AsburyPark] Re: How NOT to make a few thousand dollars an hour....
FYI, the city of Chicago has a similar system, with the kiosks and numbered spaces. BUT, many, but not all, residents have resident-only parking on their streets, or part of those streets. It seems that they do this for the streets where residents have limited parking available, and also where there are businesses close by that are likely to cause others to want to park in front of their homes. The city has a system where you pay a small amount each year for a city sticker that goes on your car. Everyone living in the city is required to have one, but for those areas that are mandated resident only, the city sticker shows what section of the city you live in, so they can tell if you live across town but want to park there to go to the restaurant around the corner, etc. Seems like this might be a good approach for Asbury to take. [AsburyPark] Just outside of Asbury, in the 70s / early 80s?
Hi, slightly off topic as this was just outside of city limits, but does anyone remember a restaurant from the 70s and early 80s on the Asbury Circle called Gallagher's? Got into a conversation with a friend who also grew up in the area, I am trying to remember when it closed but especially what it was called in the earlier 70s when it was under another name. I can't remember what (if anything) is in that spot now, but if you're leaving Asbury via Asbury Ave, when you enter the circle it was on the right before the diner (if that's still there) and before you can veer onto 35 north. Anyone remember??? Thanks! Jenni [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Fazio, 41, acting captain of the truck company on the shift, went into the 400 Main St. building which contains 12 second-floor apartments and stores on the first floor at the corner of Main Street and Bangs Avenue, across from the city post office. No one was home in the one apartment that was gutted in the fire. Related * _Asbury Park Fire_ (http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Avis=B3Dato=20110110Kategori=MULTIMEDIA02Lopenr=101100801Ref=PH) Fazio was in a room in that apartment, which flashed over from the heat. He dove out of the second story apartment to save himself, Fire Chief Kevin Keddy said. Fazio suffered fractured bones secondary to his burns, Keddy said. Fire officials said they were waiting for medical authorities at the burn center to give an assessment of Fazio's conditions. Earlier reports were that it was at least second-degree burns, Mayor Ed Johnson said. Fazio's injuries happened on his 41st birthday. He was hired as a firefighter in 1994. The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, the county Fire Marshal's Office, and state Division of Fire Safety, were all investigating the fire Monday. The cause of the fire was still being determined. This is a big puzzle we're putting together and until we put all the pieces together, we aren't going to have all the answers,'' said Garrett Giberson, the city fire official, said. One apartment next to the gutted apartment also was damaged from the fire as well as a first-floor restaurant. In all, families from four of the apartments went to hotels, or homes of friends or relatives Monday night, said Leo B. Pratte, chief disaster and logistics officer for the American Red Cross, Jersey Coast Chapter. Residents from all of the apartments who were home Monday were housed and given food by the Red Cross at the nearby City Hall Council Chambers. Our immediate concern is for the health and well being of Jason and for the comfort of his family and safety and safe lodgings of the apartment residents,'' Johnson said.
