I was great to meet you too!

I'm glad you got those shots of the Philly band in their glittering
Chinese costumes. They were amazing.

I'd love to see some pictures of the fireworks esp. if you have
anything that looks sequential. Now that you've seen Allen's
paintings you know why.

You take wonderful pictures. Your judicious cropping made our house
look good!

[AsburyPark] Re: Bicycles, Parking and Pavillions

2008-07-07 Thread lindagriggsartist
In Florida they have bike lanes on the boardwalk.
I'd like to have a clearly marked bike and roller blade lane here.

Bloomberg recently declared bike lanes green lanes or something like
that. Anyway, he painted them green rather than just having them
defined by white stripes and pictures of bikes. it's amazing how much
more the taxis and cars respect that lane now. They used to just
drive right over it and use it for a turning lane.

And biking in the street where you can't see the water is not an
acceptable substitute for the pleasure of biking on the boardwalk.

Now that gas prices are up there's an increase in ridership on NJ
transit and people are telling me that I've got it made being able to
do everything including go to my beach house by public trans bike.

I think this is a marketing opportunity for Asbury, environmental and
economic.

[AsburyPark] town wide yard sale?

2008-07-02 Thread lindagriggsartist
My neighbors and I want to have a yard sale but I thought it might be
nice to have a town wide yard sale. Ocean Grove has two a year and I
really enjoy them.

Tom Gilmour suggested that it be on a weekend when nothing else is
happening.

Does anyone have any suggestions about the best weekend/month?

[AsburyPark] Re: after the fact rant

2008-06-27 Thread lindagriggsartist
It is really weird. There was a kind of 'maintain radio silence'
about it.

But the event itself was wonderful and not hurt by it.
The only loser was Asbury Park in that the town missed the chance to
brag about it.

It's like there's a disconnect between what's really great about the
area and what people wish was great about the area.

As an aside, since I didn't grow up around here I don't know what the
town used to be or what it's reputation currently is. But I had to
laugh when a friend of mine said, If you don't want to the boardwalk
to be cookie cutter, if you want it to reflect the local culture, you
should have a Children's Tattoo Parlor...where they can get covered
with little, tribal tattoo stickers and get magnet piercing jewelry
and little bandannas. I can't help it. I laugh everytime I think
about it. Well, it is a possible use for the shipping containers!

(I wish the upcoming jazz fest was really jazz and not smooth jazz.)

[AsburyPark] Re: Fast Growing Empress Trees - cultivated are not invasivie

2008-02-18 Thread lindagriggsartist
The wild ones are invasive but the cultivated are sterile.

I wonder how big the canopy gets in a contained landscaped as
opposed to the 50'spread in an open landscape.

Even though it's ornamental in it's flowers and fragrance it seems
like with that much canopy it would surely qualify for a shade tree.

Regardless, there are a lot of other trees on that website.

Thank you for reading the post.

[AsburyPark] Fast Growing Empress Trees for Main St. beautification.

2008-02-16 Thread lindagriggsartist
I was looking at this site for myself
http://www.fast-growing-trees.com/EmpressTree.htm
and bought a tree that I'll receive in April so I can't vouch for it yet.

I was thinking maybe this would be something good to beautify Main St.
We can't look to the landlords to beautify or to new business to come
to an ugly street. I can't imagine waiting for the city gov't to get
it together to do anything. From what I've read on this listserve
that sounds like the way to kill an idea.

It seems more effective to take some Green Gorilla type initiative.

This sort of thing takes dedicated volunteers esp. if the trees are
paid for with a benefit. (I'd donate art, as usual.)

I know there are problems with this idea: some landlords don't want
trees near their water pipes; the city might destroy the trees saying
they have their own comprehensive plan for dealing with city 'hot
spots', etc. But if this idea has legs we can figure it out.

[AsburyPark] Romani (Gypsies) in Asbury Park. History and Musical contribution

2008-01-24 Thread lindagriggsartist
Hey all,

Of my many fun projects, one is collecting information about the
cultural contribution of the Romani people. I gather the information
and donate it to the Romani Archives at UT Austin. My own focus is
the American South but since I'm here now...

If any of you have stories, photos or references that you can share
please let me know.

I've seen two references in 4th of July, Asbury Park by Daniel Wolff.
The first is on page 94 and is only useful in that mentions a band of
Gypsies camped in the area in November, 1910.

The second reference is to the West Side and the Italians, African
American and Gypsies that played music there. I can't find the page
number now. I'd seen it when I was reading a borrowed copy.

BTW, you can read my article on Pennsylania Dutch German Gypsies at:

[AsburyPark] House full of stolen bikes

2007-12-19 Thread lindagriggsartist
This past summer and friend and I went to Cookman for drinks. Were
biking home very late and about 3 sheets to the wind.

We passed a house with a garage behind it. The garage door was open
and on the lawn were about 20 or 30 bikes. A woman on the lawn was
talking with a man in a white panel truck who was loading the bikes.

It took me till the next morning to realize what I'd seen. I always
wondered why you never saw your stolen bike locked up somewhere else
in your town. They were taking them far, far away for resale, I guess.

I didn't know Asbury very well so I couldn't reconstruct what street I
was on.

Sure wish I could.

[AsburyPark] Re: Fresh Direct - increase in property values.

2007-11-30 Thread lindagriggsartist

Last year a guy in the Lower East Side in NYC recently got Fresh
Direct to service his street just by organizing the tenants and
calling Fresh Direct.

Again, I don't know if this is even something AP residents and
week-enders need. Myself, I'm still working my way down the South
American corn aisle at SuperExtra. And can I just say, Peruvian corn
rocks! But in the unlikely event that I get sick of the beach and we
rent out our place for the summer, I suppose it might help.

Or does this not apply because in Asbury everyone has a car and they

Although I'm a fan of Wegmans, Delicious Orchards is still the place
 to go
for the freshest produce. A former student who works there tells me
 that each
night, huge amounts of day old perishable produce is given away to
employees
 or food banks when practicable.
I've never found wilted anything there. And, like Wegmans, if you
stay away
from the yuppie exotics and specialties, their prices are not higher
 than at
 the supermarkets.

Actually, I'd welcome another Green Market try in AP. The Greek
family that
gave it a go at Fifth and Main a few years ago were very personable,
 but
 they folded.

New York City facilitated the Green Market at Union Square which is
now
quite famous as a city farmers' market and very popular.
When it started in the mid-seventies, most people were afraid to go
there
because the neighborhood had a bad rep.

They're so profitable now that they too are able to donate (to City
 Harvest)
at the end of market days.

I hear ya'. I never found being belligerent to be productive.

But this is the second time they've come into our yard without
permission.
We talked with them about it the first time but perhaps they took
politeness as a form of weakness? I've had this happen to me before.
You do unto others and set an example of cordial behavior and if
the other person is a self serving bully they just see it as a green
light for more aggression.

The first time someone from DL strolled into our yard it was at the
beginning of the summer. My husband was sitting at the picnic table
having a cup of coffee and a tattooed, Italian guy twice my husband
size, carrying a crowbar, came walking up the little walkway between
the houses into our little yard blocking the exit, trapping him.
Don't freak out., he says.

My husband practically sprayed coffee. What do mean, Don't freak out!

My husband went over to talk to them about it but I guess he was too
polite or something...anyway, they didn't take the message to heart.

So the police did the job for us and they advised us not to speak with
them again.

When the police get involved with feuding neighbors they only see
what happens when the tension escalates. They never see it when
people resolve anything on their own through talking. It's kind of
like...you don't ask an emergency room nurse which kind of motorcycle
she likes best.

I'm writing a letter to Don Sammett (thanks to advice given me on this
list) and I'll post it first before sending it in the hopes of getting
more advice and feedback.

On, on,
Linda

Good thing you called the cops.
You might also have a legal issue with them if their smoker is
impacting your lifestyle. They really need to be made to understand
that they are part of a community and that it benefits them to be
friendly with their neighbors. Maybe you could extend them some kind
of olive branch in order to help them become more friendly. It doesn't
sound like they are going to make the first move, so it might benefit
 you to make an attempt.

[AsburyPark] Re: DL BBQ broke into our yard -draft, letter to Don Sammett

2007-11-29 Thread lindagriggsartist
Any comments, corrections, qualifications are greatly appreciated.
Now, I'm going to go to work on approaching the owner.

Don Sammett
Director of Planning and Redevelopment
Asbury Park City Hall
Fax: 732 502-5738

Dear Don Sammett,

We are writing regarding the vent for the meat smoker at D L
Barbeque, 1206 Main St. Odors from the smoker vent blow into
residential windows. We believe the vent should be above the roofline
of neighboring houses and apartments.

1206 Main Street is three stories tall in the front but only one story
tall in the back. The vent is in the back of the building, level with
the windows of second story apartments and the second story windows of
nearby houses, 709 and 709 ½ Fourth Avenue.

During the summer we couldn't open the windows while the meat was
smoking or our curtains, sheets and pillows would smell like barbeque
smoke. Even on beautiful nights we had to close the windows and run
the air conditioner, increasing our utility bill. It cost us money so
they can make money. We don't know yet how the sound and smell will
affect our property values.

When we bought our house at 709 Fourth Avenue, this building housed
The Mercy Center. Prior to that it was a bakery.

Robert Palubinskas sent the fire inspector and fire official regarding
uniform fire code, chapter 3, and they found no problem. Prior to
that Bill Grey inspected the vent and found it working properly.
Because it had been a bakery he felt the vents were grandfathered in.

But a meat smoker was not grandfathered in any more than a coffee
roaster would be.
We understand that Americas Cup had to submit plans for approval
before installing its coffee roaster, which vents above the roofline
of the adjacent apartments.

Asbury Park needs both viable business and stable property values in
order to thrive. We are certain that both can work together and in
this case I'm hoping something as simple as venting above the roofline
will enable that.

We look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
Linda Griggs and Allen Hansen

Was it the tattoos, his size, the crowbar, or that he was Italian that
frightened your husband? Come on Linda, I expect more. Are their

[AsburyPark] DL BBQ broke into our yard.

2007-11-27 Thread lindagriggsartist
Okay...

So we arrive in Asbury on Friday afternoon and our gate was open and

They left the gate swinging in the wind, letting any passerby know

[AsburyPark] Re: Buy the Coaster read: Main Street as...DL BBQ

2007-11-09 Thread lindagriggsartist
I agree Main St. is ugly and it's way too ugly for a point of entry

But I envy the people that will be near a market or dress shop.
Fasano mentions DL BBQ as a positive move.

I wish I could see it that way. That BBQ place opened it's vent on
the roof above my backyard. The noise of the vent is like a jet but
that doesn't bother me like the smell. We can't open our windows when
the smoker is cranked up otherwise our sheets and pillows and curtains
will smell like BBQ.

We had just finished renovating our house and this is really going to
affect our property values.

I've got nothing against the owners and cooks. The restaurant
business is tough. Good Luck to them but I hope they get to move to
Cookman. Anyway they rented the place from Monmouth properties. When
we bought our house it was the Mercy Center. Before that it was a
bakery.

I talked to the inspectors about it, of course, and they agreed it's a
bad situation but in AP if something stinks and it's grandfathered in
there's no fixing it unlike situations in NYC (23rd st. Crispy Creme
was cited and had to vent it's donut grease smell up 8 stories above
it's neighbors windows).

[AsburyPark] Would web cams help?

2007-10-22 Thread lindagriggsartist
If we can't wait for the city to install cameras, would web cams help?

Apart from the technical issues, there are the safety issues.

If the footage is used in court, and there's a revolving door on
prison, could the criminal figure out which house had the camera and
come back for revenge?

Still, a ring of web cams and signs in the park saying, This park is
protected by video surveillance through Neighborhood Watch

Could it help?

[AsburyPark] Tapitia has a liquor liscence the best waitress in Asbury Park

2007-10-09 Thread lindagriggsartist
I love Tapitia. It is my favorite inexpensive restaurant in Asbury Park.
I love the oysters with ranchera sauce, the ceviche, the gorditas...
The only thing I didn't like about Tapitia was the lack of Margarita.
Oh sure, you could order a Squirt and add taquilla but I've never
been overly fond of the White Trash Margarita no matter how highly
Saveur magazine rates it.

Now they have really good margaritas too.

And Elizabeth is the best waitress in Asbury Park.

[AsburyPark] Litter problem easily solved - more public trash cans empty existing ones

2007-04-24 Thread lindagriggsartist
I know people try to use the public trash cans because they are always
full.

The guys at the hardware store have to clean up the spill over all the
time.

I don't have a car so I walk Main st from house to train and I see
every trash can is full and spilling over.

Plus there aren't enough trash cans. There isn't one on the corner of
Fourth and Main at all. The convenience store owners have a trash can
indoors but kids buy candy and get outside before they unwrap it.

For an experiment I put a trash can I didn't need by the side of the
store. I put cinderblocks in the bottom to keep it from blowing away.

A couple of days later it was about 1/2 full of little candy wrappers.

[AsburyPark] I bought in Asbury because it's Bike Friendly

2007-02-21 Thread lindagriggsartist
I can't state this emphatically enough. My husband and I bought our
house in Asbury Park because of the bike friendly attitude of NJT and
Asbury Park.

We considered buying upstate because that's where most artists are
going but we would have had to invest in a car.

The country upstate is beautiful. It's all trees and pine needles
and water. It smells good.

But we bought a urine soaked crack house in Asbury Park because I can
bike from the Lower East Side to Penn station, bungee cord my bike to
the rack, then bike 5 minutes to the house.

It's a shorter commute than driving upstate.

It turns out our house had been taken over by dealers and gangs and
had created a lot of problems for the neighbors to say the least.
So I don't think I'm off base when I say that the entire block of
Fourth and Main has benefited from a bike friendly policy.

I tell all my friends that are looking for a second home about how
great the cycling is.
