They could! put millions of dollars into supporting their older components and building that support into future windows because frankly they have that kind of money, indeed they did this with xp after the initial release broke compatibility with windows 9x and dos. I don't dispute the fact that better languages than vb6 or better components than vb net could be created, however with the shear amount of software developed, developed with the components and tools that microsoft themselves recommended as you yourself said, they really should be responsable, particularly considdering that
not all the developers creating software in the early 2000's, software which still runs and is still being used are around anymore or able to do a complex rewrite of all their programs just because microsoft can't be bothered to support them anymore.a good example of this is the graphical Turrican windows remake T2002. It was developed in as you would imagine 2002, modified in 2006, however it was the student project of several German developers. Not only does it recreate many original Turrican style levels (with the original graphics, mechanics and gameplay thanks to a good word from the game's creator), but it also comes with a level editer. People have been using this editer to create level packs, some of which are virtually separate games in their own right. There are now close to 70 of these and new ones are still being written. However on windows 8 T2002 does not run properly. I suspect this is a direct X issue but have no idea, however it ha

Re: [Audiogames-reflector] I have no passion in life

2014-04-19 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — Off-topic room: wanderer

Re: I have no passion in life

Sorry it's been a while since I've posted on this topic, got a bit of writing to do. @slj, ditto with the visual gestures in conversations thing. The other day I was sitting and eating across the table from my brother and a friend of his. They're giggling like tweenage girls, and then suddenly my brother yells "chicken!" followed by this ridiculously huge explosion of laughter. My response, in quite a lot more words: "yo, you sure you didn't take something?" He comes back with: "I saw a picture of a chicken on facebook." Really! That must be incredibly, unbelievably hilarius! I mean, it's a picture of, a fucking chicken! Of course I probably missed something visual, and I was not paying much attention to the conversation, such as it was, but you get the point. I do get along quite well with older people, I actually get along better at school with my teachers than I do any other student. Most of the people in my school will tal
k to me if they need to, such as for a project, and are plenty nice and act pretty comfortable. As soon as the conversation tries to go deeper though, or there is nothing to talk about, it gets awkward, and when they're done talking to me it's again as if I'm not there. @Robjoy, I do live in a pretty quiet place, but there's not really a practical place to be outside, at least that I know of. Also, my family are very loud and come in and out frequently, and I prefer to be alone and not have people constantly looking at me. I've set a goal for myself to say hi to at least three different people in one day...it's a start, I suppose. @Turtlepower, I can relate to a lot of what you've said here. Getting a rush from meeting new people is not abnormal...well at least in my case, which isn't a very good example. Every time I'm really engaged with people I feel incredible. As an example, a little after I set up my facebook account (this was at my
blind school, but I'd actually made 3 friends), it was about eleven or so, we were up and most everyone else was asleep, and we were just...talking. I was actually, for one of the first times in my life, communicating equally, being responded to, having fun and joking around, with people who shared some of my interests and genuinely liked me. At times like this, when I'm actively engaged in a conversation with people, whether physical or online, I feel alive, Like I could quite literally do anything. Unfortunately this happens when people my own age talk to me in school as well. Someone will talk to me, and for a while I'll be energized thinking that perhaps I'm finally getting somewhere. Of course, the next day or day after they stop talking to me, and I'm left disappointed. I've been riding this cycle off and on for the past two years now, and I'm worn out. That's the main reason I don't actively look for things like a debate team or b
ook clubs in my area, and because I'm afraid the same thing will happen, might even get magnified. I'm also a pretty sensitive person; I've been told I act like a girl, as if that were a bad thing, because when I was younger I often had a hard time expressing my emotions, so when I did it could be extreme. Now that I'm older, I usually do not say anything at all. I cannot really confide emotionally in the friends I do have, because I might get the same reaction; I'm not a very strong person emotionally. I tend to be way too trusting, and if a person is acting friendly, even if I know they are not, I still instinctively want to trust and be their friend. If I'm not careful I tend to open my mouth a bit too much if I get talking with someone, sometimes it could be someone I barely know. As a result I probably overcompensate a bit now, but it's better than the alternative. For as long as I can remember I've wanted to be close to someone, physical
ly and emotionally, being able to trust each other implicitly and share whatever we needed to with each other, without fear of being scorned. This is what happened with the first (and last) girl I had a serious crush on: basically I reached out to her all at once, telling her how much she meant to me, and that I trusted her and wanted to be close to someone. Looking back I can now see that it must've been incredibly awkward for her, and unfair, because she's an amazing person in her own right regardless of my feelings; something I'd never told her until then. My point which I'm not making very well is that sensitivity is not a bad thing, regardless of what people say and what our society believes. I've had people make broad and insulting assumptions about me based on little things, and have for the most part learned to dismiss them. It does sting, and it's easier said than done, but it's possible. I suppose that's one advantage of not being in
volved with too many people, at least. I've had my fair share of bullying, but I think I've had it pretty good compared to some people on here, and it has mostly stopped in the last 2-3 years. As so

One question, Why?Unless you want to be a classical scholar and read virgil and plutarch in their original languages or study the history and litergy of the catholic church, I'm not sure why you would want to speak latin. As for help, well it's not really something you can just learn like that, I'd recommend finding a classics course if your interested and doing the thing properly, though be certain you know what your getting into. Regarding latin as a spoken language, well Latin was! a spoken language for  several hundred years (by the romans if nothing else), and it's possible to learn, although nobody  actually speaks it as an everyday language anymore and it's only really used for historical purposes sinse it became the language of scholarship for so many years. Occasionally modern books are still  translated into Latin, I even heard there is a Latin  translation of Harry potter, but these are usually mor

Re: Bop it Beats

I have a few more things to add after playing the game some more. Classic mode is very much in the vain of previous bop it games, as the maximum score is 250. Salve,The thing is, you cannot just learn Latin in a few weeks or months. I, for example, am learning Latin in school, and it's definitely not that easy as expected. You can, of course, do it if you learn vocabulary and loads of grammar, for example the "Ablativus Absolutus", the "Particip Perfect Passiv", "Particip Praesens Activ" as well as loads of word-endings, combined with the futur grammar, the past, et cetera.I'll give you an example:Maybe you know the movie "Life of Brian", my currently favourite one, even if it is from the late 70s."Ire" is the latin verb form for "to go".In the movie, the main character, Brian, was writing "Romanes eunt domus" onto a wall. He actually wanted to say "Romans go home", but written like that, it would mean "Humans called "Romanes" go the house".So, the officer forced him to decline the word "
;ire": to go. This would be like the following. You first need to know the six word endings for plural and singular persons:o: Is: yout: he/she/itmus: wetis: you (plural form, for multiple persons)nt: theyWell, now you should be able to decline "ire":eo: I goIs: you goIt: he/she/it goesImus: we goitis: you (more than one person) goEunt: they goThe singular for "Roman" is "Romanus". The plural form is "Romani".Let's head back to "ire".We now know how to decline it, but in this case, "ire" is an order! The singular in this case for "go!" is "I!" So, what's the plural? "Ite!""Domus" just means "house/home". Since you want the romans to go to their house/home, you have to form the following sentence:Romani ite ad domum! You see, it's
a lot more difficult than English or other, still existing lanuages. Hmm, maybe Chinese is still one of the most difficult languages, Latin is definitely a lot of easier! NOTE: Not every sentence can be verbally translated. You sometimes need to reform the translated sentences so it will actually make sence to you and the others.Example: Ad Forum ascendo.Rough translated, just read and written from left to right, it would mean "To the market I go up". In this case, you have to reform the sentence, so it means "I go up to the market."If you think you're up to it, you may try translating my signature.Hints:Dare: to givefacere: to make / to do somethingIf my Latin magister reads this, please do not blame me if I made any mistakes. Re: [Audiogames-reflector] The Eventual Famine

2014-04-19 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — General Game Discussion: Quasar

Re: The Eventual Famine

Unfortunately, I find the trend in the industry seems to be away from backward compatibility rather than toward it. Take the latest generation of gaming consoles, for example. Both the Xbox 1 and PS4 have no backward compatibility with previous games or most previous accessories such as controlers. Before I make my next point, I want to draw a clear distinction between Microsoft dropping support for XP, the operating system, and supporting programs written in languages that were new under XP. As far as Microsoft dropping support for the XP OS, I think it's high time they did that. Microsoft has to devote resources to keeping up with cyberattacks that were never imagined when XP came out, and making sure they get patched and pushed to users. I found part of a post from Microsoft that I think sums it up quite well:“From the year that Windows XP was built, cyber attacks have increased in sophistication.  Systems receiving regular updates get the protections they need based on the latest cyber threats.  But at some point an older model of any product will lack the capability to keep up and becomes antiquated.  Obsolescence for Windows XP is just around the corner.Cybercriminals will work to take advantage of businesses and people running software that no longer has updates available to repair issues.  Over time, attackers will evolve their malicious software, malicious websites, and phishing attacks to take advantage of any  newly discovered vulnerabilities in Windows XP, which post April 8th, will no longer be fixed.”That said, I am in agreement that Microsoft could do a better job of updating languages and technologies, rather than recycling them and coming out with new ones every few years. I tend to agree that a day will come that the older games are no longer playable. That said, I think there is a somewhat inflated view of the difficulty of getting older games to work under windows 7 and 8. Yes, some games may require the installation of additional components or installing to a different folder to deal with permissions issues, but the issues are far from insurmountable.Lastly, everything gets outdated eventually. Someone pointed out being able to buy old Nintendo games to play on the newer system, but this is unfortunately the exception rather than the rule. I may be mistaken, but I believe that the games in that cases are versions that have had their core components updated to run on the newer system, rather than any significant backward compatibility. If the later was the case, Someone would've probably come up with a cartridge reader adapter by now. Even Apple has stopped supporting and updating OSX versions earlier than I believe 10.7. Also, programs for the mac that came out around the time many of the classic games did are not even runnable on modern macs due to a complete change in processor architecture and apple dropping the backward compatibility with the old one.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172532#p172532

Re: latin

Hi Paddy. interestingly enough, while I've never studdied latin, I did spanish at school, and am currently learning to speak Italian, in order that I can sing in it convincingly. Both languages have a very similar scheme of altering the endings of all verbs and most nowns as you describe, although Italian uses more pronowns than Spanish, and often has some quite formal ways of saying things. For example, for most Italian verbs if you are talking about events in the past you can't just say "I went home" you would need to say "I have traveled home" There is also similarly an imperative form of each verb which you would use in giving orders to people directly as well, for example when in the Simpsons episode set in Itally side show bob says "Manjate" for lets eat, that is actually incorrect, what he said ws "you eat" he should've said "Majete" (note I might have my italian spellings wrong sinse I
39;m learning it primarily to converse in).I don't actually find it that difficult, though I imagine if I hadn't been familiar with the way spanish works I wouldn't have found Italian as easy. All I need now is a decent English/Italian dictionary, preferably on the Iphone that can give me the odd words and bits of vocabulary I might need, sinse my teacher has gone through a lot of the gramma with me.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172534#p172534

Re: The Eventual Famine

I'm in agreement with Quasar on this.  While it would be great for Microsoft to continue supporting XP, at some point it is no longer about money, and is instead a limit of what can be done with the older technology.  A big part of "Supporting" XP would be keeping its security up to date, and this is the one area where I have to completely agree with their decision to abandon it.    They could have continued to support XP if it were not for the security side of things.  Dark, you are correct that outside companies can do a fine job taking over to handle XP security (as some have).  Up until a few years ago, every computer in my house (usually several) ran XP with only service pack 2 installed.  A decade of using XP, without the latest service pack or patches, and I can only think of 1 or 2 times when a computer got seriously messed up due to some sort of virus or malware.  This was partly due to third party anti-virus s
oftware, me knowing what to do and not do to keep my computer safe, and possibly luck.    When supporting XP, Microsoft cannot rely on people using third party software or luck to stay safe though.  It's a technicality.  When a person backed into the side door of my car, they called it totaled even though there was just a dent.  There was a tiny bend in the car's frame which would cost more to fix than the car was worth.  Sure they could have just repaired the door and ignored the dent in the frame (which is what I wanted them to do), but technically they have to return the entire car to a certain standard without leaving anything out.  I do think Microsoft could easily continue to support XP in the other ways, but because they can't maintain the right security standards they technically cannot "support" it anymore.    When it comes to older games not working on modern/future windows, I really do thi
nk that is overblown as well.  In the middle of 100 people talking about how they play some VB6 game on their windows 8 machines, you'll get some random post exclaiming that old VB games will no longer work once people have to switch over to windows 7 or 8!  It's funny really, and clearly shows that they are more interested in spreading some sort of panic, than realizing that people are already doing exactly what they claim they won't be able to do.  Now I'm probably exaggerating a bit here, but funnily enough, not that much.    There is only a very small chance that a VB6 game can't work on a windows 7 or 8 machine, and that is about how they designed in.  A developer could have used specific folders to save files to, which the new UAC does not allow.  That's just about it.  Everything else can be solved by simply registering a few files.  In addition, registering them for one game means you don'
t even have to do it for the rest.  It's a 1 time deal.  The UAC situation is no different than a developer who foolishly designs their game to run specifically from C: drive, and the game fails to work when someone is running it from a separate hard drive.  I've seen people make that same mistake, and it is more a failure to think ahead than a problem with old software.    Will all VB6 games stop once windows 9 comes out?  I have no idea.  I know the planes didn't fall from the sky when the year 2000 rang in.  I also know a lot of people who swore they would.  People are ALWAYS waving their arms trying to get people convinced that such and such program won't work anymore once the next version of windows comes out.  I have heard those claims since as long as I've used a computer.  Whenever I do sit down to play games, I play classics that came out between 1994 and 1998, and they all work just fine
on my windows 8 computer.  I have this dusty old CD spindle that has these CDs from when I was in high school and each new windows was supposed to mean I had to toss them into the trash.  I'm still waiting for someone to be right.  Oh I'm sure one day they will be, but I generally stop listening to a school of thought when it has been consistently wrong for 20 years.  When the day comes where I toss these old games into the trash because they can't work, it won't be because a doomsday poster was correct, it will be because he was lucky.  LOL!    So in summary...  I agree that VB6 can't be officially supported due to security technicalities.  VB6 games still work just fine on windows 7 and 8 (unless the developer made a poor design choice with how they save their files).  VB6 games will probably still work long into the future because I've never seen anything to make me think any different.

The new updaters open up a console window to display status - percentage completed, that sort of thing.  It's also where you'll see error messages. If you're using the new version, it might be failing because of permission issues.  There have been a couple of people who have had trouble updating because they installed in program files as admin, but tried to update or run as a regular user.  It's best to install mush-z in one of your own documents directories to avoid that problem.Alter Aeon MUDhttp://www.alteraeon.comURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172549#p172549

It'll take years for the US government to allow such a thing and just as long to convince the country that the blind could handle it. Lukas, with that error happening before the debuglog.txt file is created, it means the program is not being given permission to write to the disk.  Are you running the game from your hard drive?  People have had this happen when trying to run the game from within the zip archive, and also from write protected flash drives.  I do seem to remember someone having this same sort of situation when their anti-virus was set to launch Swamp within a "quarantine" folder because it was not on a "trusted" list.  I'm not sure if any of these will match your current situation, but they may help.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172554#p172554

Re: latin

@Camochek, about Iramic and old russion it's something I've simply not heard of, heck regular Russian is likely hard enough for an English speaker . Though as I said if there are works from the  Russian orthodox church you wish to study fair enough, just the same way latin would be useful if you wanted to studdy original works from the Roman catholic church.Latin does seem to have made it's way into a lot of things, from final fantasy 7, (the sephiroth one winged angel), to epic metal performances like Luka Terreli. Indeed I believe that as for so long it was used purely as a language of litergy and sacred works the sound of latin has become a signifyer for something powerful or important. One thing that particularly amuses me is when latin is used for names of related things. my favourite of these is the main character's sword in Gene wo
lfe's shadow of the torturer series, it's name is terminus est, which according to a friend of mine literally translates as "it ends here" which is a good name for an executioner's sword .URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172558#p172558

You always have a way with words aprone. I couldn't have put that post any better my self. What i am starting to realize for me at least, is that xp is really only a nistalgia trip. I can run all of my xp programs on windows 7 or 8 with no problems. Like aprone said, it's usually only a matter of registering some files, and your all done. The only real problem i have run across is trying to figure out how to get sound working in some older dos games, but i know there is a fix somewhere. Wose case would be to run a dos virtual machine if i really wanted to. So, i think as long as people keep appreciating older software, there will always be a fix, because people will work to keep the old software working on newer systems. Even if microsoft doesn't support something, doesn't mean there isn't a 3rd party willing to do so.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172559#p172

Re: latin

At our school, we do not only learn Latin because we were just too lazy to learn French and as a resultatem, we were left alone with Latin or something like that. In fact, while learning Latin, you also learn about special events which happened in the past, like the great Pompeji event when the Visuv killed a whole city or about Hanibal from Carthago, who was trying to defeat the Romans. You also learn something about the culture in the past, what they were eating, what slaves were good for, etc.Sometimes we watch movies (not in Latin, of course) and make trips to special places. We also gather useful information from the text, while translating it. In my opinion, it is better to translate texts which describe different events which could have happened in the past, than just translating a randomized text like "Hello, what's your name? I'm someone requesting to b
e anonymus. When did you get the bus? At 6pm, but it arrived later. When did the bus actually arrive? About fiffteen minutes later, but I was too lazy waiting that long, so I took a taxi."You see, the other method is definitely more effective. Re: has anyone used emacspeak?

Emacs? Yeah, nice OS. Pity about the included text editor. No, seriously, I wouldn't waste your time with it, personally. Well, OK, waste your time with it, but only in order to experience what accessibility might have looked like, and not what it is. The fact is that it's an access jail, and is insufficiently competent to do everything that you need. Kind of like the world's cheapest note-taker, only less intuitive. At the risk of upsetting the Linux faithful, I still believe that the best access to Linux is to be found at the console, and with braille using BRLTTY. If you can do that, you really should.I have not tested ADRIANE yet, but that got a brief burst of enthusiasm so might be worth checking out. It includes a user space screen reader, too, which attracts my notice.
Perhaps that can help you?Graphical Linux needs to get better. Firefox with Orca is a horrible shadow of what it should be. URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172565#p172565

No, I don't think so. Newer cards tend to treat them as separate, but only expose one at any given time as the active device. I think this is supposed to be a safety mechanism, because for example the volume levels can be different. Also, if you have digital optical-out, then they may actually be physically separate devices, because in that case the DAC is outside the sound hardware.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172573#p172573

Stellar Aeon: What is it, and what do we know of it?

Hi all,If you've played alter for any amount of time over the past year or so you may have heard talk of this Stellar Aeon thing. Basically from what I know of it, Dentin is going to take the systems of alter aeon and make a space system out of it, make the game generate and destroy planets at will, since there will theoretically be no builders. What I'm curious about is if there will be player spaceships you can get at the beginning of the game or whether that'll be a high level thing. also, a space based game with the kind of Multiclassing that Alter aeon has? I don't know about you, but that sounds great to me.also since Dentin wants to make the game fully aotmated where he doesn't have to staff it with anyone while it creates content on it's own, makes me wonder how quests will work?URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172574#p172574

Re: Swamp, zombie fps by Aprone

It's good to see the perspective of people levelling characters now as well as having a character levelled in an earlier version of the game. The only thing that concerns me about the points Wills made is the suggestion that you should be able to get from level 1 to level 50 in a dozen or so hours of playing. I know that levelling is kind of the point but that seems like seriously fast levelling to me. I guess, if you're experrenced at the game and have time to do it, you could get a fair few levels in that time but I really don't think that levels 1 through 50 should just be considered an inconvenience. OK, stuff like trading and entering the last map needs higher levels but reaching those points should feel like achievements and not just the start of the game. I therefore propose the idea that there is a special system which is only useful for low level characters. How about if there's a separate trading system just for levels 1 through 30? Or maybe some piec
e of equipment which is really good but immediately breaks when you reach level 30 or something. These ideas will make lower levels fun but not make them interfere with high level playing. They'll make it worthwhile having a lower level character and doing the smaller missions so that it's a viable alternative to just fast-tracking to level 80.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172577#p172577

I agree that twelve hours is crazy fast. As you stated, level 50, and the other levels, are goals, not something to hit before you can really start playing. However, I feel like the items you can already get make it worth it; at level 8, you can find the longbow, and at level 20 you can get to sub2 for some really good armor. What needs to happen is an adjustment to the skills/armor, as we've been talking about, and perhaps an increase in low-level mission rewards, or a scaling back of said missions' difficulty.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=172579#p172579

If you intend to play your discs without ripping them first, then @tward's suggestion is best--go find a region-unlock firmware for your drive, and patch it.
