An old pillow my guide dog Kirk sleeps on and my bed. I suppose I could use the wooden slats from my bed but I'd have to throw off the matress first and if I needed a weapon right now that would just take too long, so I'm essentially hosed.

Re: Computer power cycling loop issue

Mine was on for more than 30 seconds before I realised the fan was a problem, turns out the blades were stuck on the fan's power wire. Unfortunately since then I've found my processor temperature going up to the 70 degrees region just with light web browsing for an hour or so. I'm probably going to replace the CPU cooler but I'm concerned if it might be something wrong with the processor since its overheating previously making its temperature rise, I'm loathed to spend the money on a new cooler if it won't help but I don't see any other way to find out.

Thanks for the suggestions but like I said it turns out it was the CPU fan. The system's not that old, it's an Ivybridge I7 so losing it now would hurt especially since money is really tight.Just as a note, no I can't see the bios info since I can't see anything. I needed sighted help to finish the build, but only as far as connecting up the front panel power/LED connectors and getting windows running.

Computer power cycling loop issue

2015-02-25 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : cx2 via Audiogames-reflector

Computer power cycling loop issue

I was wondering if anyone here has heard of such an issue. For a while now my self built desktop has on occasion rebooted around the point where I would anticipate the power on self test has just finished, but it started fine the second time. However just a few minutes ago it got stuck in a loop where it was doing this repeatedly, and when it had got past it I had no sound so had no idea whether Windows had booted or not. Several tries later I finally got into windows to find Jaws insisting the computer needed reauthorizing and one of the fans seemed stuck on full bore, it was fairly high pitched so I suspect it was the graphics card fan. A reb oot fixed the fan stuck on full power but Jaws kept insisting it had no authorisation, an issue I've come across on occasion in the past, but turning it off for a minute or two fixed this like it has done previously. Of course I am concerned this is a sign of a deeper underlieing problem so that's why I'm asking here.P
art of the trouble is it doesn't happen often so I can't ask someone sighted to see what happens on the screen, I just can't cause it to happen on command. Any thoughts are welcome.Edit:It seems particularly persistent today. In case it matters I'm running win 7 64 bit and Jaws 13, I know my hard drives are connected because it does boot properly some of the time and I'm using an SSD as my primary.

Re: a really cool, neat way to get around

Some regions allow you to buy an iPhone directly from Apple, this iPhone would then be sim free and able to be used with any carrier and any service package you wish. That said without some kind of data connection Uber wouldn't work because it sends the request for a taxi over the internet, you can of course use wifi for this or tether your iOS device to the internet connection from another device which supports it.

Uber does not use a telephone number. The terms on which you can get an iPhone depend on your region and what is available there, but the activation is necessary for all iOS devices and is no more complex than the usual set up questions you get on a new windows computer. iPads can have GPS but only in the wifi plus 3G version, the pure wifi version doesn't have GPS.

Availability is limited, it wasn't available in my part of the UK either. It's also worth noting that the company has a bit of a reputation when it comes to privacy matters and seems somewhat boorish, they actually used data from their system once on their official company blog to show statistics of what they called the "ride of shame", essentially people taking a taxi home on a sunday morning. That's the kind of mentality I'd expect from a 14 year old.

Complete immersion is a big ask, getting the resolution right while making sure the equipment doesn't distract you with its own weight or attachment method is really difficult. I have heard of attempts at gloves back in the late 90s but of course the problem is how you would use any controls along with where the content would come from. Limited haptick feedback already exists in the form of rumble, and in the seemingly now dead force feedback technology, but going much beyond that is very difficult. That said there was a mouse with some kind of thing on it that let you feel what the mouse was running over, I forget the name and it never got any traction but an interesting concept all the same.

It seems the only difference between this and my 5.1 roccat cave headset is the motion sensing, and the ability to use it with a mobile device. How it will fare at these prices I'm not sure, a lot of it depends on the audio quality and the quality of the companion software as well.It seems to have been funded with plenty of time to spare, though from the sounds of things I don't think they really needed the kickstarter. It looks like one of those cases where a company uses Kickstarter to drum up interest in a product and to offer preorders, the delivery date is only june and they even say the moulds are ready to go so it's just a matter of production, quality control, packaging and distribution.

What I will say is the chances are the balance of genders is probably such that most users are men looking for women, and that things are very difficult if you're not in a good job since most of the genuine women seem to be those whose busy careers don't leave them much time to find someone.

What operating system are you running? It doesn't sound like a standard Windows feature so if you are running Windows you may need to look to third party software you have installed. Also a bios password should only limit access to the bios, unless you have it set to request on boot which would only affect the boot up and not log off, so I don't see that as being the issue unless something very strange is going on.Edit:Hmm, so there is a lock option in Windows, I never knew that was there before. I'm curious though why you want to lock your computer if you're logging off.

If a wireless keyboard comes with its own dongle it's often but not always using its own radio system, your old wireless keyboard is probably one of these not a bluetooth one so that's why it may not be recognised as a bluetooth device. Are you pressing the Fn key instead of control? Some keyboards have the Fn key left of control and some to the right. Holding Fn while pressing the function keys usually swaps between them acting as volume up/down/whatever and the actual numbered F key as well.Hope some of this helps.

The reason blacklisting is not avoidable is it's implemented on the network's end, there's a list of phone IDs which all the carriers will block. This is something I've only heard about in relation to making stolen phones unusable, but it doesn't surprise me sadly that carriers would use it this way harsh as it seems. I'm just relieved Apple haven't offered them the ability to remotely brick the phone, which I imagine the carriers would be all over if they could get it.

Re: Where to sell old equipment

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll see what I can do. I'm not greedy, though donating it to the RNIB would also cost me money to have it sent by courier because they don't have anywhere around me and the local institutions probably wouldn't know what it was much less what to do with it.The event within the family isn't so much the problem as the fact that my mother's suddenly got what you Americans would call a bug up her butt about moving over as fast as humanly possible, I'd thought about it before but I had planned to take this year to save money and figure things out then my mother suddenly went from being quite off putting in her caution about the idea to pushing with everything she's got and it's kind of turning things topsy turvy. I could let her go and follow when I'm good and ready but she's the only sighted assistance I have, I rely on her to help with my mail which yes I could use a scanner for but I really can
't be arsed and I'd never remember plus I need her to help give my guide dog Kirk a decent run since I just don't know the dog walking routes and when it gets muddy or icy using a cane while holding onto the flexilead would be fairly hair raising. It's not like we need to rush, the... family event isn't due until around the end of September and it isn't happening directly to my mother so she has plenty of time but she has a tendency to be inconvenient about these things.I can't really say the details right now because it's of a personal nature and it's not for me to make the decision to tell everyone, lets just say my mother suddenly has a burning need to live closer to my sister and her husband. I'm sure you can all figure out what I mean from what I've said.

There's a rotor setting for languages. You make sure it's turned on in the voice over settings, then do the twist with two fingers until it announces language, then just flick up and down to choose your language. There are also rotor settings for rate and volume, though volume only controls the speech volume so it's usually best to leave that one maxed out so you don't find VO drowned out by any other sound you might have playing.

Item chooser is where you can type a few letters of something and it'll look through the screen for it. It's a bit like a combined headings/links/whatever list except it looks for the text at any point in the item, so for example if you type log it'll still find a link that is titled account login.Apps very much depend on what you want from your phone, though for navigation Ariadne or BlindSquare both work well enough. You can also get colour and light edetector apps which come in handy if you've no useful sight like me while tap tap see lets you send a picture to be recognised by a server telling you what an item is or even what text is on it in some cases.

Re: Major Upgrade For Windows Users's On The Way, For "Free!"

The issue really is that most people on Windows use the major branded software packages, and these brands will likely be unwilling to share their profits with Microsoft via their app store. Like I said with iOS for good or ill the app store is necessary, and for the Mac there have been enough users unfamiliar with the ecosystem to make it worthwhile combined with the number of people who already have an Apple ID from the iOS app store or from the iTunes store. The problem I see is the Windows app store potentially being full of nothing but odds and sods, and they really need to get the big names on board. Chances of them doing this with games is slim because of Steam as well so that's doubly awkward.

Re: extracting sounds from .dat files

Or to put it more simply, .dat isn't a file format it's just an abbreviation for data. People come up with various different ways of storing various kinds of data, which can sometimes include sounds, in a single file for whatever reason and use .dat to signify that it's a file that is required for the program in some way. .dat is just a catch all extension they use when the file doesn't fit with any existing file type.

Re: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Given Murphy is constantly complaining about Dresden's attitude I'd say it's Dresden's issue, he even seems to allude to the fact that he knows it's a problem. It's probably a reference to the whole hard boiled detective who knows "women are trouble" but still can't stop himself helping them stereotype.I'll agree I'd like to see more of the way the world runs, though I do like that they allude to for example the red and white courts having mundane business interests which both promote their interests in various ways and gives them a source of revenue. Sometimes it gets a bit much when you have large evil organisations with access to any resources they want shy of nuclear weapons yet no visible explanation of how this works. Perhaps supplaments for the Dresden Files RPG will give more of this information. To be fair Dresden has lost the demonic and undead parts, though it edoes increasingly seem in recent books he&
#039;s gaining a lot of unnecessary gimmicks. I did find some interest in the way the interplay with the echo of lashiel went, though I was disappointed Harry's big reveal to Michael about the coin was met by a simple "I know".As for normal, that depends on your definition. Murphy is still a normal human technically speaking, she's going a bit vigilante more recently but she's still only using guns and other mundane tools combined with knowledge she's picked up along the way. Marcone and Hendrix are only baseline humans though Marcone is the first mortal to sign onto the uncili accords and has a damn valkyrie on retainer. Charity Carpenter is technically only human, though she did once have magical talent and her husband used to be a knight of the cross.I'm also a little weirded out by the redheaded werewolf Andy. She's virtually never been single through the entire series, she just seems to bounce from one romantic partner to an
other even after one of them got killed. Yes she's described as being gorgeous but come on, take a breath once in a while.

Re: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Oh Harry Dresden can definitely be a bit annoying when it comes to women, though it's almost worth it for the ammunition it gives to Bob. Part of the fun of Harry is how colossally bad he is with people, heck in the first book he went to an official function held by vampires dressed as a cheesy B movie Dracula knock off. That's up there with going into a dwarf bar and ordering a short, or going into a werewolf bar and asking for a doggie bag. I'd say at least some of the idiocy in the first couple or so books is overplayed and not believable, like his going to Bionca to talk to her about the dead girl and accidentally convincing her he was making a threat against her or going to the lycanthrope garage in the second book to ask questions but once the author gets his feet under him Harry's smartarsery is fairly amusing. Suicidal, but amusing. The other fun part of the books is as you alluded to, the way the characters decide they're down the rabbit hol
e anyway so they might as well just do the crazy stuff like a zombie T rex or an invisible boat blaring out we will rock you at full volume just because. Probably not the most realistic actions in the world but at this point who gives a crap, it's unashamed indulgence.

Also I never said don't ask, and I never said things are as easy as they should be. Beurocratic inertia and apathy are a problem just about everywhere you look when it comes to service provision. Part of my point was you have to expect at least a certain amount of effort to be involved even in a perfect system. 10k is a lot of money and they need to be certain that it is justified, in an ideal system your disability department would support you in making your case of course but there would still need to be a case made. You can't just hold your hand up and say "I'm blind, can I have 10k please" and nor should you be able to, there needs to be at least a little give and take involved. In the real world you need more giving of the boot than you honestly should have to but since when has being blind been simple?

Re: Major Upgrade For Windows Users's On The Way, For "Free!"

I think we might have ended up with this freebie year even if 8 hadn't been a dud, MS are losing market share and not all of it is down to the horrors of Vista and 8 though they were certainly large contributors. Apple's success with mobile devices has led to an increasing number of people buying macs, both because they were impressed with the mobile device and decided to give Apple a try for a laptop or desktop and because they were looking for the extra interoperability. The update changes are welcome. I don't know how Apple has handled Mavericks or Yosemite but from Snow Leopard through Mountain Lion, or with iOS, they're still using infrequent updates even for security which may give MS a slight edge here. It's something I think operating systems need to move towards anyway and it's good to see Microsoft start the ball rolling where Windows is concerned. The question mark though is how much are MS hoping to make out of their windows ap
p store. Apple for example already had experience and a solid server platform from their iTunes music sales, both convincing people to sign up to yet another digital store and the possible birthing pains inherent in a relatively new service which has as yet seen little load could cause them large problems. There's also the fact that they will need a good selection of software to convince people to use their platform, and developers may not use their platform unless they have a certain volume of sales to prove it is worth their time. Apple again had large numbers of people with Apple IDs from their music service, and the way they force developers to use the app store for iOS apps means many developers probably figured they already had the account to upload software to the mac app store so they might as well use it. Android has the benefit that many mobile device users weren't necessarily sure how to install software manually on Android, and even those that were had the issu
e that it was a new ecosystem and there weren't any large brand names in the android software market making buying directly from developers less than viable. Windows has a user base which is relatively used to installing software manually and a variety of large brand names many of whom sell their products by digital download thus making the convenience of having a library of software packages to peruse less relevant. Sure MS could force you to use the Windows app store for Office but people will probably just use it for that then forget it exists, they're going to need some products that truly captivate people's interest rather than making it an "oh great I have to use the bloody MS app store to reinstall Office again." It needs to be something people want to use, not a chore people have to put up with.

Re: Major Upgrade For Windows Users's On The Way, For "Free!"

Oh without doubt it's a gamble, but then it's got to the point that every new release of Windows is a roll of the dice.I think the hardware refresh issues are more related to the majority of users who wouldn't know how to upgrade their version of windows even if they wanted to, or don't even know it's possible in the first place.  A fair amount of this is undoubtedly due to the abortions that were Windows Vista and Windows 8, but the sheer lifespan of XP and the stubbornness of non technical people *cough*Dark*cough* (no offence) means prying people off of XP would have been an achievement in the first place. Now yes that plays into what they said about reducing hardware refresh lifecycle in a sense, except I believe they have it backwards.  People aren't uninterested in new computers, people would probably be interested to buy new ones if they came with XP even so it isn't down to the specs required for newer versions of Windows
. It's not a lack of interest in hardware because Windows isn't appealing, it's the negative connotations of Windows that's holding back hardware sales in at least some cases. People make do with crappy or half broken computers because they're so afraid that the newer versions of windows will mean they have to learn everything completely from scratch all over again, and for many non technical people that wasn't an easy experience in the first place.Back to Microsoft, if they don't regain some momentum they're dead. They can either keep going the way they have been and slowly dwindle away, or at best become a second or third place behind someone else, or they can take a shot at recovery. They might blow it but I don't think that's as likely, though of course still possible. I think they'll probably end up at worst slipping a little ground or at best clawing back at least some of their market share, I don't see this be
ing a fix for them so much as an effort to stabilise their situation, but in my opinion it won't be any worse than another Vista or 8 would be and there's always that chance we might be surprised. I know if 10 ends up any good I'll strongly encourage my mother to move off of my old XP laptop which she insists on still using even though the keyboard's half broken.

Victorious, good to know. My experiences were admittedly around ten years ago and it was rather awkward to say the least. I ended up having to invent my own notation which I can't remember any of now.Camlorn, $10,000 is a lot when you need to get the university's beancounters to sign off on it. Even having a third party produce the braille on the university's behalf could be tricky to get past the beancounters simply because it involves a new outgoing to a new supplier. I'm not saying this is right but we have to be realistic, and regardless of the benefits a $10,000 expenditure would need to be reviewed by some relatively senior people because that's quite a chunk of money. Sure it might not break the bank for the university but they can't just drop that much cash on something without going through proper process, though often it should be easier to get the process moving than it is in the real world.

Simple answer, the screen reader companies just haven't focussed on the problem. The more complex answer, as someone who took a unit in discrete maths, is that there doesn't seem to be any recognition of the more advanced symbology built into the screen readers. As Dark says there are likely problems with perceiving the equations via speech but often we simply don't get the chance to even try, because the screen reader doesn't read the notation for things like implication and equivalency. Don't even get me started on things like ven diagrams and Dextra's shortest path.

Re: My Dream Machine

I'd definitely go with an SSD for the operating system at least, and a pair of 6TB spinning drives would still be overkill for most uses but would at least give you redundancy or extra speed depending on if you used raid 0 or 1.A zeon processor is impressive, though if you ever intended to build it I'd scale back to a high end I7. My 3770 is more than enough for everything I do and the potential for overclocking is there if you get the unlocked version. For cooling if you get a case with double 12cm fam slots I'd definitely suggest the Corsair H100 hydro or any updated model they might bring out, you'll need twice as many fans as you might think for it to get the most out of it though since you can put two fans on either side to push and pull the air through. It's a 240 by 120mm radiator that fits in, as I alluded to, a pair of 12cm fan slots next to each other. As for fans, I favour Akasa Viper fans which get 85cfm and still run on PWM, or ma
ybe the Akasa Apache which are a little slower but quieter and have dust resistance. 55cm still isn't bad though, and the arctic silver is your best bet.For case again make sure you have the double 12cm fan slots, and ideally if you can get it have a seperated PSU compartment. As an example the Coolermaster HAF Stacker series are designed for high air flow, thus H A F, have masses of fan positions, and is made up modularly of cases which stack on top of each other. People use the ATX case for the motherboard, the mini ITX case with front mounted power supply for their PSU and possibly hard drives, and a mini ITX case with rear mount for a PSU on top but without a PSU for either water cooling radiators or multiple high end graphics cards. This seriously helps by seperating the major heat sources.Power supply should be fine though I myself like the Corsair GS850, I've got one myself and on my I7 the fan actually never runs because it doesn't need to. It no
t only adjusts its fan speed depending on load but turns it off when it isn't needed, it also has extra long cabling to help reach the far ends of your case and the cabling has sheathing over them to stop them being harmed if they end up rubbing against something. Any of the high end Corsair PSUs would be excellent. Most motherboards include built in ethernet so I'd save the expensive network card. I'll also say that most of the time you're either using ethernet or wifi depending on where you place it, any good quality 802.11AC card should do fine. Not sure the fan controller is needed unless you really want a knob on the front to turn the fans up and down. If you want temperature sensors you might consider using Arctic F12TC temperature controlled fans instead, they include a temperature probe on the end of a wire which controls the fan directly, though I'd avoid the pro version which has weird mounting things and I'd probably avoid it for
your CPU radiator. As for other odds and ends, my experiences with a Soundblaster Recon 3D combined with Roccat Cave 5.1 headphones have been good so that's definitely a good choice of sound card you have there. I'd agree you might as well swap the DVD writer for a Blu Ray drive, either a DVD/CD-rw and BD-rom or a BD/DVD/CD-RW. Bluetooth and card readers depend very much on what you need from the system , they'll either be must haves or not matter in the slightest but if you do use memory card readers I'd definitely consider a 3.5 bay card reader. If you don't already own one a mechanical keyboard using Cherry MX switches is also nice, for a good tactile response go with the Cherry MX brown for quietness or blue for audible response as well as tactile feedback. The colours are the names of the switch models, you can find them in most good mechanical keyboards and have no impact on the keyboard's external colouring.Hope you don't mind t

Take a look at the home and student version of Office, it's for any non-commercial use pretty much so home use is fine. It's less expensive than the business version. You also won't need to worry about touch on a desktop unless you have a touch screen monitor, which noone has anyway because they're expensive and a mouse works just as well.As for only being able to log in via the cloud, if MS did do that it would be a major ouch so I'm cautious about assuming that will be the case. Speaking from previous experience with dos games back when I was a mainstream gamer you not only needed to tell your game what model of sound card you were using, or at least what model it was compatible with, but also the hardware address information such as port number, DMA and IRQ. Dos games had to control the soundcard directly so they needed to know exactly how to communicate and where, ever since Windows 95 a little thing called DirectX allows games to make sound without needing to know all of that. In fact the games are using their own sound drivers since dos itself has no sound capacity. Are you sure the windows startup noise was chimes and not a ta da? That was what I recall from 3.1. That said I don't believe the windows startup noise has ever been played through the internal speaker which can only bleep, it was always a wave file.

Re: just got a Iphone6 plus, cases and questions

They have their moments. There are also incidents though like them forcing Microsoft to remove windows media player from Windows XP, and forcing Microsoft to set up a browser choice window the first time you try using the internet to ask what browser you want. I can see some sense to the browser choice thing but making Microsoft do it and not Apple is just pointless, and even then I'm not convinced it's a sustainable position as new browsers get released and old ones cease to be updated.

Re: BBC application for PC: does it exist?

It may but you may have issues with speed, and if your VPN has a usage limit of some kind you may have issues with that.Like I said virtually all on demand services have location restrictions of some kind, for example I can't go onto the on demand service of a US TV network and use it for the same reason. It's for complicated legal reasons, short version is they only buy the rights to something for the region they broadcast to, or in the case of the BBC where they make their own content not limiting it would harm their ability to sell rights to broadcasters in other countries. It's all about money sadly.

Might be worth checking whether VMWare has any sound drivers included, sometimes you need to have VMWare install its own drivers onto the virtual machine for the virtual sound card it uses to work. At least I seem to think that's how it worked when I played with a Windows VM some years ago. Whatever you use will need to be set up from within the VM so I don't think VDMSound will work though I could be wrong.

Re: just got a Iphone6 plus, cases and questions

TIFKAM?Oh and I feel I should translate a few of those "computer wootery" terms as Dark likes to call them. You've probably heard vaguely of IP addresses, everything connected directly to the internet has to have one and that includes web sites. For a long time it's looked like we're going to run out, IPV6 is just a way of expanding the number of these available. We've had a bit of a reprieve on this thanks to routers but one day, maybe a long while off now but eventually, just like the analogue to digital TV switchover the old system will end up being either disabled or unable to access the whole internet for lack of space and IPV6 will become essential. It's a bit like running out of phone numbers so you add extra digits, theoretically yes they could adapt older systems to understand the new system but we've been down that road w
hether or not we agree it just isn't going to happen.Improved memory support means you can actually have more than 4GB of memory, some of the earlier examples of Windows trying to make this work actually slowed the computer down when you had more than 4GB but my Win 7 machine runs flawlessly with 16GB. You might never need that much memory and that's fine but it can help with things such as converting sound or video files from one format to another, editing audio, keeping PDF readers or web sites with flash from bogging down the system like they tend to do, or just having a lot of different windows or tabs open at once so you can refer back to them while you work on a document.Win 7 has very nice support for multiple sound devices. This might seem strange, but you could do what I do and use your standalone sound card for your headphones and use the integrated sound that came with your motherboard or graphics card for speakers. Sometimes I just want to sit bac
k and not have to worry about headphones, but the headphones are without a doubt what I use for serious listening because they both give me better sound in full 5.1 and block out some background noise. Since I'm using a desktop this means I don't need to mess around behind my desk with cables to achieve this, and given my 5.1 headphones have 3 connectors it takes a bit of playing around to get them in the right places every time I hook them up, but I also don't need to change my settings between 5.1 and stereo because I can leave my soundblaster card on 5.1 and the other output on stereo, thankfully the setting for this is independent for each output device.USB 3 allows external hard drives or flash drives to copy files faster, you might not care about this but it can cut down the time it takes to make backups. It also has potential for scanners or syncing mobile devices such as iPhones or transferring to your victor stream's SD card.I hope you have
n't taken this as some kind of personal attack or disrespect from myself, what you do is ultimately your business and no one else's. Just remember that everything has its time, and when it comes to electronics but most especially when it comes to computers and computer like devices that time can be surprisingly short. We all agree that Microsoft's strategy regarding its interfaces is idiotic bullcrap but none of us can expect to have any meaningful impact, and sooner or later the tidal wave sweeps us all along with it. Or to put it more succinctly, the only constant is change.

Re: just got a Iphone6 plus, cases and questions

I had a long post but it got eaten so I'll just list a few things I find have improved with my newer system, I'm not sure they count as "modern conveniences" but there you go.Ten to fifteen second start up time, that's to the point where my screen reader is up and the system is useable. All this is thanks to a solid state hard drive, something XP could technically use but managed incredibly poorly so as time went on you had serious issues. I've had this system a year and it is as fast as the day I set it up, plus SSDs never need defragmenting, in fact it harms them because of the extra wear it causes.I can'tn remember the last time my screen reader suffered slowdown, it's fully responsive all the time even when I'm doing something in the background like defragging my second hard drive or opening programs left and right. All this is thanks to better handling of multiple cores, meaning however busy my system gets there's almost always one core with enough free capacity for my screen reader to run smooth as silk.Search box in the start menu. Can't remember where the hell that setting is that you need to change? Just type it in and it'll usually come right up, it's saved me rummaging around the control panel quite often. As for backward compatibility, don't be so sure. Win 95 broke most major dos games that came out in the early 90's in some fashion or another, Magic Carpet actually ran at ten times the normal speed or so for about 30 seconds until it crashed completely. Only games that came out immediately before Win 95 had a chance of running and many of these simply put up an autorun box saying "You need to reboot into dos mode", trouble is... the dos mode didn't include drivers for your CD drive so you couldn't play the game because it required the CD in the drive to run like with many modern console games. XP flat out killed any mainstream games that didn't support Windows 2000 which XP was built on top of, as XP approached developers got wise this time and started putting in Win 2000 support for a year or two before XP came out as a safety measure but it still caught many games which suffered frequent and random crashes and utterly utterlyscrewed up colour pallets, and those were the lucky ones. We're lucky in regard to audio games because their relative simplicity has isolated them from the worst of this, mainstream games having much more complexity in terms of code find this a perpetual problem.Making VB6 run on Windows 8 would be like trying to put the wheel from a Ford Model T on a car from the 70's, it'll take a lot of jiggering about just to make the thing fit and then you've got problems with things catching on each other as it goes round, the wheel shaking and rattling about, and so on. They could make it work I'm sure but it would never be quite right, it wouldn't benefit that many people, and the longer they tried to keep them working together as future versions come out the more difficulty they'll have with the two clashing. It's like analogue TV, it gets to a point where you just have to draw a line under it and move on just for the sake of everyone's sanity. That said newer browsers which support HTML 5 will allow video content and the like to be more accessible, since it reduces the need for the evil that is Flash which can only be a good thing.I'd truly love for them to stop pissing about with the user interfaces, I just can't bear to leave myself open given the amount I rely on the internet. Even just my name and address could be used to steal my identity, and even if I'm careful and don't visit any dodgy sites there have been a number of occasions where the adverts on a perfectly legitimate site such as those provided through google ads have contained something nasty that will compromise your system. The issue isn't the site you go to in many cases, it's what gets left on your computer from various places and it can easily track everything you enter on a site. It doesn't matter how well encrypted Amazon or wherever is when it's recording what you type. I really don't want someone doing something like applying for a £10,000 loan in my name because they managed to snag as little as my name and address.

Re: just got a Iphone6 plus, cases and questions

Okay, first up Microsoft don't really wave the security bogeyman so much as they wave the new interface. Their entire marketing strategy is effectively look at the new shiny, which is stupid. In my case I simply got to the point where I felt the security issue was more painful than the jump to the new interface would be, though at this point you might as well wait to see what happens with windows 10 than buying 7 or 8. There's also the fact that Windows has actually included measurable improvements to security like user account control and the malware removal tool that comes through every month. As for VB6, oh if only 'twere so simple. It would take a lot of testing to make sure the newer technologies hadn't broken anything in VB6, the older a technology is the more effort it takes to keep it working smoothly in combination with newer ones. Most of all though, VB6 as a platform is crap. It had its advantages in its day, namely that it made development a l
ot simpler, but it is very processor inefficient and porting the games to newer versions of visual basic which do actually exist shouldn't be that much of a problem. Have you ever looked at the system requirements on an audio game where they exist? There's no reason tank commander couldn't theoretically run on a 486 perfectly happily except for the small fact that VB6 places an overhead on the code, the short version is VB6 doesn't directly instruct the computer instead it requires an interpreter which slows the process down significantly. At one point Microsoft even released a free version of visual basic specifically for small projects like these, the only excuse really is raaargh why should I bother upgrading my game when the computers these days have ten times the power needed to run this inefficient crap and there are rough workarounds for newer systems that don't like it. Read that last sentence carefully, you're using such characterisations yours
elf here so I felt it fair to return the favour.

Re: starting out with a guidedog.

That isn't how direct debit for electricity works, direct debit is if you are being billed in a post pay system where you receive a monthly or quarterly bill. Many rented properties instead of having the usual postpay meter have a prepay meter with credit, that way if the tenants disappear the landlord isn't left footing the bill. This credit is bought in shops using either a card or a key, the key essentially being a similar size to a particularly long flash drive but with a proprietary connection, and certain shops have a reader that the card or key goes into. You pay the shop for the credit, the shop puts the credit onto the card or key and presumably pay the utility company on your behalf.I suppose it is possible they could run a direct debit straight onto the meter, though if so I haven't heard of this. It's also very likely you'll either end up accumulating masses of extra credit or else running out, and believe me you will use a lot more gas
in winter than summer so it all varies depending on the weather among other factors. As for shopping remember you'll have to get your shopping from the shop to the taxi and from the taxi to your home. I usually use a backpack for shopping so I'm limited to what I can fit in the backpack, since I need one hand for dog or cane and the other for finding doors and just generally feeling out for things. Between that and the potential communication difficulty with the staff in the shop, not to mention the fact that it's easier for me to find an alternative in the online shop if they don't have exactly what I want, I just find ordering it far easier. I usually get something like two weeks worth of stuff in from ordering online then grab anything extra I mighght want in the local shop. It's always a good idea to give these kinds of things a go before you move out on your own, that way you don't find yourself having to rely on an arrangement you have
n't tested and getting stuck. I'm sure your parents would be willing to let you sort out some shopping for them as a test run if you wanted. You'll also never, ever meet members of your preferred gender if you live like a hermit and even if by some miracle you did they wouldn't be interested in you. If that doesn't bother you that's fine but it's worth being aware of.

Amusingly in reference to Dark's point London only got public sewers because the smell one summer reached the houses of parliament and all the MPs found it unbearable. Up until that point effluent literally ran in the streets, the roads were actually built with stepping stones so you could cross without wading through the effluent. Without flushing toilets or running water people often simply emptied their chamber pots out of the window.Sometimes it really is down to the government to fix things, and often they need a royal kicking up the arse to get it done.

Bear in mind the limits on what you can physically carry, unless the taxi is also happy to let you unload your trolley into their boot and then unload their boot at your home. I personally order groceries online and find that the best solution for me but I'm perfectly able to go to the shops in my town if I need or want something without having to wait and without having a minimum spend. Good examples are going to the chemists for either prescriptions or other medication including painkillers and cold remedies as situations dictate, going to the bank in person to sort out anything that needs it, or going to top up my prepay meters for gas and electricity. A lot of rented homes here in the UK, at least in this region, have prepay meters and while we can't read them without sighted assistance in many cases they will beep when they're running low and we can certainly put some money on the card or key and top them up ourselves.Staying inside all the time also jus
t isn't healthy, either physically or emotionally. You can safely ignore all this codswollop about fresh air being good for you but sometimes you just need a change in environment and not to feel like you're doing nothing but sit around all day. Being able to make and meet friends is also good for you, even for intraverted types like us. Intravertion doesn't mean you don't need or want friends, it just means you're more likely to have a small circle of friends you know well rather than lots of acquaintances you barely know at all.

You're the best person to make that decision for yourself, just don't rule it out for the future. I avoided getting a guide dog for a number of years in large part due to my lack of confidence in my ability to care for another living creature, though I did used to be somewhat nervous of dogs which I learned from my mother. Eventually I decided I'm in my late twenties, I should have more confidence in myself, and here I am having had Kirk for just over 3 years.Like Dark said it can be difficult in the beginning, especially if like me you never felt bothered about dogs, so if you do get a dog ever be prepared to give it something like six months at least and also be prepared for a tough six months as you get used to things.Dark, I've had issues with Kirk's toileting and sometimes throwing tantrums and getting overexcited the whole time I've had him. When I've approached the trainer he's been frustratingly casual about the whole t
hing, no doubt some of the problem is from the fact that Kirk is never as bad when the trainer is around. I don't feel comfortable putting in a complaint about it though so it looks like I just have to do the best I can, I just see it as Kirk's quirks at this point. It doesn't help that Kirk is very stubborn and wilful when he wants to be, and going to the toilet is one of those times. Even on the few occasions I've managed to get him toileting regularly in the garden he still manages to save something for the run.

First up VB6 is around 15 years old now, it's perfectly possible to upgrade software to newer versions of VB but many audio games have simply been left languishing without support and David Greenwood is frustratingly stubborn in his clinging to VB6. That being said I don't see why MS couldn't simply release older systems like Windows 98 for free "as is" without warranty for the purposes of virtualisation, it's not like they're making any money from it and it's completely unsuitable for modern systems in any case. Also just as a note many of the older games released on modern consoles aren't emulated, they've been ported which means the consoles aren't backward compatible the games were just modified to run on a modern console and as you state they charge for this, I previously got the impression you expected this for free so I apologise if I misunderstood.Regarding updates in general, I seriously agree they shouldn'

Again I got the impression you expected an updated version of XP for free from comments referring to the amount of money Microsoft has, frankly for me the ideal situation would have been if they maintained the same interface between editions so that for example Vista was an evolution of XP not a redesign and it focussed mostly on practical features not "Look how shiny this shiny new interface is, look at all the shiny buttons, did I mention it's shiny?" Some software companies, and Microsoft are the chief culprit here, try too hard to create a revolution with every new version and fall flat instead of going for the slow and reliable evolution. In fact that was why I originally bought my Mac, however between hardware pricing and various other primarily hardware factors I've been put off buying a replacement so I'm sticking with Mountain Lion on it which is now

For me the irritation of Windows and its continual redesigns were outweighed by the hardware support and security, I'm still running 7 and I don't have any plans to rush into Windows 10, in fact I'm very wary of it, but for me the negatives of Windows 7 even as an unknown before I first used it were outweighed by the negatives for XP. Re: just got a Iphone6 plus, cases and questions

It all depends on the software in question, the more complex the software the more likely it is to fail. XP isn't even built on DOS like 9X was, it emulates it like a poor man's dos box. As for things like VB6, in a sense I can see your point however the more of these things that remain the more work it takes to keep everything all working together. It gets to a point where the complexity of the operating system is exponential and technologies like that really, really can't be maintained forever. Imagine if the PS4 and Xbox 1 still contained a tape drive with support for ancient games from the ZX spectrum? Would it be cool? Hell yes. Would it  increase the cost of the product enormously for a relatively tiny proportion of the market? Equally, hell yes. There also has to be a cut off point for updates, it just isn't reasonable to ask a company to support a product forever when they aren't receiving any more income from it. How long that period is
can be debated but again would you expect Sony to provide assistance for a VHS recorder bought in 1995? computers move faster than home electronics which catches a lot of people off guard, and maybe they should provide updates for longer or maybe not but there still has to be a limit. Now if Vista had instead been an improved version of XP then great, that would have been exactly what I wanted, but there's no way this could have been viable as a free upgrade. Microsoft have many sins and can indeed be money grabbing, but at the same time we have to offer them at least some fair compensation after a certain point. Look at the availability of updates as a warranty period, but one that requires constant work on Microsoft's part, eventually you can't expect to get anything more from them without paying to extend that period of support. Now the question is how long is long enough to be fair to consumers without being so long as to bankrupt the company involved, beca
use if that happens consumers won't get any support or new software and there will be a lot of employees looking for new jobs.

Re: starting out with a guidedog.

Leaving the dog on their own seems to be something that varies from dog to dog and between trainers, I was specifically told it's a good idea to give them some practice just in case it ever becomes necessary. Some people do think of their dog as just a mobility aid indeed, but that isn't necessarily the worst thing in the world so long as it isn't taken to an extreme like with shutting them in the kitchen. Would you be comfortable with letting them share your house or flat relatively freely? Beyond that the care is mostly feeding and watering them once or twice a day depending on the dog, giving them a brush at least every other day or preferably every day, toileting them every 4 or 5 hours during the day time and needing to hoover more often than normal. Depending on the dog one run a week normally suffices, depending on your sight level you may need sighted assistance for this for example if you wouldn't be able to tell where the dog has gone to the toi
let to pick it up while they're running around a field or some such. Playing is a good bonding experience for the dog but again this depends on the dog's personality and how playful they are.Do you find yourself often getting your cane tangled up in obstacles like drain pipes, advertising boards and bike racks? If there's enough room a guide dog should take you around these, and generally mean you don't need to bump into things to find them. They can often dodge people too though that can be tricky because people do stupid things like suddenly moving in an unhelpful way, or in Kirk's case he decides they should move out of his way instead sometimes, he does get a bit of a big head on occasion. As Dark says guide dogs aren't for everyone and if you decide not to go for a dog that's fine, I just haven't heard anything here that would be a definitive reason not to have one.

Re: starting out with a guidedog.

Ignore facebook, you should know better than to take criticism over the internet. Yes it's annoying and insulting but it's a case of, as one famous actor said, opinions are like assholes... and it goes double online.I was told it's good to let the dog practice staying at home when you go out on occasion, in the event that it becomes necessary. I was specifically told though to try not to go beyond 3 hours if you can help it. If the weather is really, really bad then no you don't absolutely have to work them though you will still need to take them somewhere to go to the toilet even if it's only in your back yard, but short of unavoidable circumstances which would make it entirely impractical or be dangerous for you or the dog you really want to be taking them out at least 6 days out of the week ideally. Some people only use the dogs as a mobility aid, some even shut the dog in their kitchen when they're not working though I find that cruel
. It sounds like you should probably ask for a dog that is placid, from the way Dark has described his dog Reever on here it sounds like she spends most of her time doing an impression of a furry rug whereas my dog Kirk would be very unsuitable for you because of his sheer bounciness. The dogs are like people, they've all got different personalities and that's why UK guide dogs go to such lengths to match you with them.I hope I didn't cause any offence regarding US dogs, I was going by what I was told by a VI lady from the US who goes to my braille class. She said something about the dogs being trained to look at the lights to tell you when to cross, though as sighted people know just because the lights say it's safe doesn't necessarily mean it is. UK dogs have the same failsafe where the dog should refuse to cross if there's a car right there, we were told not to rely on it and it was only there to give us a chance if things went wrong rather th
 an being foolproof.

Re: just got a Iphone6 plus, cases and questions

While I understand what you mean about security bogeymen my bigger issue with newer versions of Windows is they try to innovate too much and fail, they flat out reinvent the interface with every damn new edition. For me the best changes are ones you barely notice consciously, performance, security and compatibility.I don't have a problem paying for updates for security, so long as we get performance improvements and support for new technologies like USB 3 and wireless N or AC. This isn't really any different from buying an update to your antivirus software. As for backward compatibility to the 70's? I don't think so. I was a sighted gamer back when 95 came out and the majority of games flat out stopped working, the DOS games just didn't like Windows, and XP did this all over again. I've done some reading up on why the change with Vista messed up so much software and it was mostly stubborn programmers not Microsoft, when they needed to acc
ess library files on the system they insisted on specifying the exact location when what they should have done is told Windows to find X library file. Microsoft had found it necessary to reorganise the files many programs use in order to keep things from getting confusing with the move from 32 bit to 64 bit, and they had specifically set up Windows to look for these files in both locations... except the way programs had been written overrode this because programmers often develop a god complex as far as these things are concerned, thinking they're always right and not trusting the OS.

I mostly use Syri for sending quick text messages, often when I'm just around the house so privacy isn't too much of a concern there, it's not something I'd want to write off completely.iCloud drive is a new feature in iOS 8 and yosemite which effectively makes your iCloud storage space act like a drive, as Sebbie says in a similar manner to dropbox, so it's like having a constantly connected USB drive. As for XP, the problems there are lack of support for newer technologies and lack of security updates regardless of the interface changes MS loves pushing on us all. Support for serial ata hard drives in XP requires additional drivers which is quite the cludge since it makes reinstalling should it ever be necessary a bit of a nightmare, and new hard drives are serial ata as standard nowadays. I'm also not certain about XP and support for USB 3, as well as newer wifi technologies. Most of all though your browser is vulnerable, and in ways a
ntivirus or firewall software can't necessarily help with. I made the move to 7 rather reluctantly and over time I've actually come to like the new start menu, the integrated search function was irritating at first but I slowly learned to appreciate it.If you're at all concerned with privacy or security, including any personal or financial information you enter into web sites, XP is just a losing proposition.

Re: Surviving something major like an EMP?

Ehh, horse manure may not have eaten the ozone but that isn't the primary issue with cars, it's CFCs and other chemicals that mostly eat the ozone. The issue with vehicles is greenhouse gases, primarily CO2 and methane, and livestock produce large quantities of methane which is far more potent than CO2, as does the decomposition of manure. There's also the quality of life factor, when I said air quality I meant specifically at street level.I never intended to say masses of people would die, I simply meant the cities themselves would be pretty effectively killed by people getting clear of them. That said I'll also note that compared to a lot of developed countries the US has a vast wealth of undeveloped land, while we probably have enough land here in the UK we and other countries in western Europe have far, far less of it than the US.

Trying not to laugh at the irony of Moffat trying to shove all the previous plot up a crack, something he would be better off doing with his current plots.I don't think we need to see the entire time war, though having the occasional glimpse may be interesting. I agree the idea of a war that twists and warps the timelines is more appealing to me than a conventional conflict, of course it's something that would be very difficult to  portray since we really can't imagine how such a conflict would work, it's just beyond our frame of reference. I'm sure there may be conventional battles in places, especially those which are time locked simply in order to either disable the time lock or to deny a strategic position to the opposition, but that just couldn't be the sum total of the conflict. The only way I can imagine the time war ending in remotely the fashion that it did is with the use of the moment, Galifrae would be destroyed butI can&
#039;t think of any other way to so severely cripple the Daleks and prevent them from immediately taking the galaxy for themselves.

If the speaker is faulty on a 6 it should still be under warranty surely? It's inconvenient but at least you don't have to pay for it.As for my comments regarding trains and signals, it's specifically subway trains as in those which run mostly through underground tunnels beneath a city which cause problems. It's the fact of going underground, either on the train itself or simply in the station, which interferes with the signal. Depending on where you live this will likely either be no issue at all, where I live there simply are no underground trains at all, or a massive problem like in London or certain cities in the US which make extensive use of subway systems in a similar fashion to how most of us use buses because it keeps the traffic seperated from the roads.

Re: Surviving something major like an EMP?

I know people can garden and so on but we're talking about a city here, I don't see their being enough land to grow that quantity of crops simply because roads and buildings are on top of the land instead. Come to think of it parks would probably be turned into farms which would be interesting, though the sheer amount of food a city requires? I just can't see that happening regardless of how many people have the skills, and the area surrounding the city would become either full to capacity with crops or else scavenged to worthlessness quite quickly. You just can't sustain such a high concentration of people in an area without bringing in food from outside, and even horse and cart would struggle to make an impact.Interesting side note, the introduction of the combustion engine actually had a major positive impact on the environment and air quality in cities simply because it cut down heavily on the amount of horse manure that needed to be cleaned out of t
he streets. Interesting how we now think of cars as such a negative thing in terms of the environment when it was such a great triumph for air quality at the time.

Re: A really good Dr. who related Youtube series

Well the problem with the huge battle is surely the Daleks would have bases somewhere? Where do they produce new Daleks, ships, supplies for both, and the resources to make all of those possible? Militarily speaking it is utterly implausible that an attacker could be annihilated in that way without leaving something behind, and with Galifrae gone who is left to mop up the remaining daleks before they can become a threat to the rest of the universe? Even a single Dalek supply base would likely be enough to rebuild the Daleks enough to threaten the galaxy without the time lords there to stand in their way, much less if there was a factory producing dalek travel units or even a dalek shipyard. Even assuming the daleks were throwing everything they had at Galifrae the support structure for their forces would still have to exist. In the real world the support structure is usually taken over or dismantled by the victors but all that was left was the Doctor and I don'tn see ev
en him being able to wage such a campaign against the daleks alone, remember that even a single dalek has always been portrayed as a substantial threat in and of itself.

Re: starting out with a guidedog.

A few differences in the UK to other places.Guide dogs pay for food and vet care, they have an account with the manufacturers and you just call up and order the food using your dog's serial number. That said as well as the six monthly checkn up it's a good idea to take your dog to weigh them at the vets once a month, they should assist you if you ask nicely and they're not too busy. Regarding toys just buy good brands and avoid toys with squeakers in case the squeaker comes loose, Kong is a very safe bet and produce not only the well known Kongs for throwing but frisbys and a stick shaped toy. I also find Buster a good brand, they produce cubes you can put treats in which the dog rolls around the floor to get the food out, they're actually styled as a six sided die. Pressed rawhide chews work very well, Kirk loves them and as a bonus they work to keep his teeth clean and you can even play fetch and tug with the rawhide rings, though it is probably worth
keeping a treat or a smaller rawhide chew in your pocket to give the dog in exchange for getting the ring back so you can use it multiple times. When I play tug with Kirk he lost interest in his rubber rings so I play with his rawhide rings then offer him a rawhide cigar after the session, I do let him have the rawhide ring to eat eventually but this just stretches out the amount of time you get out of the ring.UK guide dogs are not trained to help you tell when it's safe to cross the road unlike US guide dogs, so it's still down to us to tell when to cross.Booties aren't really necessary, however I would strongly suggest using a wet cloth to wipe your dog's feet if you suspect rock salt has been spread on the pavement or if it's snowy so cold snow doesn't stay in the crevaces of their feet. If you're planning on being out a long time then you may need to find an option to do this while you're out but if you're only going to
the shops then you can do it when you get home. When I first got Kirk I found it all very stressful, including the guilt that I wasn't falling in love with him in spite of everyone I meet out and about saying " I bet you love him already". Ignore them, they're idiots. If you're at all capable of loving any kind of animal then the bonding and playing will come naturally, it may take weeks or months but it will happen. Fortunately Kirk is quite cheeky and very people oriented so it meant he fell in love with me right away and was persistent enough that he wasn't upset at how long it was taking me to bond with him. Let the people from guide dogs know about your feelings towards dogs since it'll help them match you.Oh and yes yes yes, guide dogs UK do allow you to take a test walk with a dog though be aware it may not be representative of the final outcome. The dog I had a walk with was due to be withdrawn for both lack of confidence when
the trainers weren't about and inconsistent tension on the harness, I just couldn't feel what was going on through the handle and it was very stressful. The time I went for a matching walk with Kirk the difference was instantly obvious, the tension was far better so obviously the first dog Carlton just wasn't a good choice for a test walk.I can also recommend getting a food bin to keep your dog's food in, and if possible an additional set of talking kitchen scales to weigh their food. I have two sets of kitchen scales, one for me and one I keep in Kirk's cupboard for his food so the dog food doesn't contaminate my food and vice versa.

One way or another it's important your therapist know about this so they can help you fully and I know admitting things face to face can be hellishly difficult, you feel like you want to but your throat mouth and brain just seize up whenever you have an opportunity.Regarding the cane, it depends whether it's a roller or a tapper tip. In either case you want the edges of your sweep to be a little wider than the width of your body, with a roller you just roll it from side to side while a tapper you tap one side of the area you wish to sweep then lift and tap the other ignoring the area in between. The important part is to keep your arm still and your wrist loose. If anyone were to catch you it's always an option to say you're taking an online VI awareness course or something and you're trying to get the most out of it you can. Remember cane
s won't let you find everything so don't feel frustrated if it doesn't work the way you want, they also take a lot of getting used to so be patient.I know I've often found my magnanimous attitude towards gender has fluctuated depending on my mood, the worse my mood with my depression the closer to purely straight I seem to become. I figure this is me retreating towards the familiar and safe nature of my attraction to women, kind of the opposite effect you're experiencing in a way. I genuinely hope your therapist can help, and if I can do anything at all just ask.

Re: just got a Iphone6 plus, cases and questions

My understanding, and this may of course be wrong, was that your card info is stored with Apple just like with the app store or iTunes store and the chip in the iPhone 6 simply identifies and authorises the merchant to take payment through Apple, a bit like using pay pal except in person.I remember my otterbox defender case for my first iphone, a 3GS. That case was nigh indestructible but the big problem I had was I couldn't feel the click of the power button, I ended up having to press harder than necessary to make sure I activated the button due to the massively thick rubber over the button and over time this broke the power button and I had to get it replaced. I still use cases most of the time but since then I've never gone for a whole dustproof case like that, I'm presently using a cheap wallet case bought from Amazon and it does quite nicely allowing me to keep a few banknotes with my phone so I don't forget them if I go out anywhere.

Re: A really good Dr. who related Youtube series

Well like He Who Moans said, at this point the sheer number of false exits makes it feel like Moffat is just trolling us. When Clara finally goes I think a lot of people will simply say "about bloody time" thus robbing any potential impact they could squeeze out of the event, I already feel like that now so imagine how bad it'll be after another series of her. That's all assuming they don't end up in a death spiral leading to new Who getting canned which could happen if Moffat doesn't watch his step. The Who brand has a hell of a lot of good will but even that won't last forever.

Re: Surviving something major like an EMP?

I don't think the problem for survival would be computers so much as electrical transformers. As you already mentioned an EMP probably wouldn't hit the whole planet but if it were to it would take an absurdly long time to replace all of the major electrical infrastructure, not the cabling of course but a lot of the rest of it. I believe there was an incident in the 90's where Quebec got hit by a solar flare knocking out a bunch of its electrical grid by overloading the transformers and so on, replacing a large quantity even to the point of an entire US state would be something that would take years using the planet's whole manufacturing capacity for such hardware so replacing the entire world's hardware would take a ridiculous amount of time.Obviously there are plenty of people, not just survival nuts but people who had survival training in the armed forces, who have been on expeditions of various kinds both as part of work or just for a holiday and
so on, who understand how to cover the essentials for life but cities would pretty much be hosed. Once supplies of stored food ran out you'd be entirely reliant on deliveries straight from farms, which relies both on farm machinery working as well as a sizeable fleet of delivery vehicles. People living in cities would be almost entirely unable to contribute much to the effort given that cities have no natural resources of their own so they'd be reliant on hand outs, not to mention the sheer population density in a city being too much to allow for living off the land even if the city itself were to immediately fall back to forest. You'd probably get sizeable areas of slums in cities made up of people who lack the ability to do anything productive without power, remember even factories require electricity and even if we could produce generators to cover that we'd have a lot of trouble finding the fuel to run them without the international oil trade. That all
being said, last thing I heard they hadn't found a way to produce a large EMP without using a nuclear bomb so the EMP would probably be the last of our worries. As far as military matters go I understand that Noraad in Cheyenne mountain was designed to be shielded against EMP in case of a near miss by nuclear explosion so I can only guess most first world countries have some bunkers fortified against EMPs and if we knew it was a risk some steps could likely be made to offer protection to hangars and garages where necessary. This of course wouldn't stop the basics from working like rifles, the biggest problem would be the hit to radios immediately after the EMP and before a stopgap alternative could be put in place. That time window would result in massive coordination difficulties, but if and only if the EMP managed to knock out all the walkie talkies used by the military which is a bit of a stretch.

Re: just got a Iphone6 plus, cases and questions

Dark, NFC not NSF is near field contact. It's basically an RFID chip standard, the same thing used in contactless payment cards and the like, I know my bus pass has it as well. Having it built into a phone can potentially allow the phone to imitate various cards you may wish to use, however Apple's NFC chip is locked so it can only be used with Apple Pay. As I was trying to express previously the US still has only the old swipe and sign method for paying with cards so Apple Pay is a big deal there, here in the UK where we have both chip and pin as well as contactless cards Apple Pay is simply a non issue, and it isn't even available here as yet.The big reason I always use a passcode is more to deny a thief the use of my phone should they obtain it rather than protection of information, though the protection against identity theft is nice too. I've noticed Touch ID can be used for Amazon as well as purchases through the Apple app store and iTunes which is
also useful, but more than anything I like the convenience. With regard to the battery, it very much depends on your usage patterns and where you live as well. If you live in a poor signal area you'll drain more battery because the antenna will require more power to maintain a good connection, and if you lose signal often for example in a subway system you'll lose battery power as the phone maxes out the antenna to try and re-establish its connection with the cell network.

Re: A really good Dr. who related Youtube series

I've one major complaint about the christmas special, spoiler warning ahead...Aaarrrgh, I thought we got rid of the bloody woman then yet again she's right back there as if nothing happened, bouncing in and out of the series like some kind of demented space hopper. I'm sorry but Clara just needs to piss off already at this point, she's had so many occasions where it looked like she was going to leave then nothing happens I'm just getting really irritated. My initial impressions of Clara with Matt Smith were positive, though bear in mind she did follow Pond, and I found her strong in the first episode personally though this may just be my tastes but ever since then she's just really got on my nerves.

Re: just got a Iphone6 plus, cases and questions

As someone with a 5S I can tell you the touch ID is very useful for quickly unlocking your phone, if you need to make a quick call or send a quick message or anything like that when you're out and about you don't need to fumble about entering your lock code, so long as you're not wearing gloves at least. Each new iteration does usually improve the processor slightly but if you're happy with your current phone I wouldn't worry too much about that detail, however the available memory sizes have changed now, they leap from the basic 16gb right up to 64gb for the same cost as the old 32gb size. Here in the UK apple pay likely won't matter in the least since it's essentially contactless payment built into a phone, my understanding is those poor Americans don't even have chip and pin much less contactless so that's why Apple Pay has been such a big deal over there. If Apple were to open up the NFC to select third parties then perhaps it
might be more useful, for example using your phone as your travel pass and so on, but it is what it is right now.I also don't recall whether the 5 supported 4G data which is something worth considering if unlike me you spend any amount of time in areas with 4G coverage. I'm also led to believe the increased screen size of the 6+ has allowed them to fit in a significantly larger battery in relation to its power requirements, meaning that the 6+ tends to last somewhat longer between charges.Oh and I have to mention bendGate here. I have a friend whose brother works in handling the returned iPhones on contract to Apple, apparently the faulty phones can mostly be found as part of specific bad batches that come from specific factories where they've been skimping on the quality control in order to try and eek out more money from their manufacturing contract with Apple. I'm betting they've been stomped on pretty hard by now so I'd be surprised i
f anyone getting a new 6 or 6+ will have issues.
