From personal experience: 1. Linear PSU with analogue outs is big improvement over stock 2. Standard PSU with external DAC is big improvement over stock 3. Linear PSU with external DAC is big improvement over stock and smaller (but noticebale) improvement over mods 1 and 2. Sean, at that bit rate (2.8224Mbps), one period is 354 ns. Obviously that is several orders of magnitude greater than the jitter rates you gave. I had always thought (or been told) that samples could occur at any time during a clock cycle, which would mean the jitter should be on the order of the clock frequency (or reciprocal time period). Also, how does this bit rate you gave link to the oscillator frequency, which is something like 12MHz, right? -- ezkcdude SB3-Derek Shek TDA1543/CS8412 NOS DAC-MIT Terminator 2 interconnects-Endler Audio 24-step Attenuators (RCA-direct)-Parasound Halo A23 125W/ch amplifier-Speltz anti-cables-DIY 2-ways + Dayton Titanic 10 subwoofer He's not hi-fi, he's my stereo. ezkcdude's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2545 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24392 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Would really love a chance to hear for myself what a properly set up TacT system can do. -- azinck3 azinck3's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3967 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24366 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SMPS vs Linear: Jitter
It is an interesting idea, and a familiar one. I've heard of other products with a switching PS that contaminate the sound quality of other gear -- either placed nearby, and/or plugged into the same power strip. One thing I notice, however, is if I listen with headphones to the SB3 on the standard switching PS, and then with the linear PS, the difference is still very noticable, possibly even more so. There may be something to that... the headphone amp uses an LDO regulator from the 5V input as opposed to the higher internal voltage, because it needs more power than the DAC and op-amp rails need. Also that chip is known to be able to modulate high frequencies into the audio range (we needed to add some shunting caps when it was found that they could pick up the 2.4G emissions). Both of those are worth further investigation wrt to SMPS vs Linear question. However, neither factor affects the RCA outs so I'm not worried about those from what I've seen . -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24392 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Phil Leigh Wrote: Maybe - I have no means of telling - it's just a theory... Definitions: http://www.answers.com/topic/theory says a theory is: A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena. A hypothesis is: A tentative explanation for an observation, phenomenon, or scientific problem that can be tested by further investigation. The difference is VERY important. Common misunderstanding and misuse of the word theory can lead to all sorts of silliness, as we have seen in the courts recently... On the topic of this thread, I am pleased to see this sort of testing being done. Someone once said if you're not producing numbers, you're not doing engineering.
