Alex,

Care to trade an SB3 for permission to use it in our marketing

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Upgrade SB3 Power Supply with outboard DAC?

2006-06-02 Thread Heuer

From personal experience:

1. Linear PSU with analogue outs is big improvement over stock
2. Standard PSU with external DAC is big improvement over stock
3. Linear PSU with external DAC is big improvement over stock and
smaller (but noticebale) improvement over mods 1 and 2.

ALAC and FLAC show no difference in sound quality but FLAC uses less
server processing, lower network bandwidth and added SB3 functionality.

Sean- That would be great. It would be neat to see what your power
looks like compared to mine. I think I have pretty good power in my
home and I have looked at it on the scope, but alas I don't have a
scope with the resolution that lil' bad boy has.

How could you test to see if the AC noise effects the DAC output?
Would feeding a sine wave to the SB and viewing the wave (close-up)
with both power supplies reveal anything?

Understood...yet there are DSP's used in the professional audio

SlimDevices do not announce products, or even talk about them, until

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Should I get a DAC?

2006-06-02 Thread extenso

From reading a lot of opinions on the subject, it seems to me that
high-end systems benefit most from including an external DAC. I guess
my gear is somewhat midrange: Cambridge 640A amplifier, System Audio
1750 speakers, and, of course, the SB3, which is the reason I began to
read about DAC´s. My music source is an iMac with ALAC files feeding
the wired SB3. Anyone experiencing significant better sound (whatever
that is...) with a DAC feeding a reasonably good mid-level system?

This is something that only you can answer. You're the one who will be
listening to the device. Let me say this: I have a mid-level system,
am an amateur audio engineer, and think of myself as discriminating in
the audio field. I feel no compulsion to mod my units. I enjoy them
perfectly the way they are. If I were to upgrade I'd be sinking money
into my speakers long before I ever touched the SB. There are other
folks, however, who would not be able to enjoy their SB's as they do
without having modded them. Buy one and see how it sounds. If you
feel compelled to mod, then by all means mod.

2006-06-02 Thread ezkcdude

Sean, at that bit rate (2.8224Mbps), one period is 354 ns. Obviously
that is several orders of magnitude greater than the jitter rates you
gave. I had always thought (or been told) that samples could occur at
any time during a clock cycle, which would mean the jitter should be on
the order of the clock frequency (or reciprocal time period). Also, how
does this bit rate you gave link to the oscillator frequency, which is
something like 12MHz, right?

Hi All,

Thanks for your comments on this topic and the offer for the SB3 is
unexpected! A few words of explanation. The photo is taken in an
extension to the house in which there are large windows on each side.
The green reflection in the SB3 is actually trees outside. I considered
a polarizer but it had the effect of reducing the readability on Classe
TFT. Personally I think the quality of the display on the SB3 matches
that of the classe pretty well (despite a 40 fold price
differential!!).

For those using film, thats excellenttherein true quality lies.
Most of the images on http://ajmitchell.shutterpoint.com have a film
version too (Fuji reala on minolta 7). I am also looking into 6x12
wide120 format for landscapes which are my real love.

I have some more SB3 pictures taken in the same setting, and I'll post
one or two more over the weekend.

Alex
ps. I would love to see a photo forum or even better photo
contestcould be interesting to do some long exposures for the
display.

No. If you don't have a superior external DAC into whatever you are
plugging the coax into then use the RCA outs and use the internal SB
DAC, it is of excellent quality. You're worrying over something that
will in all probability make no audible difference whatsoever in your
system IMO.

The best thing about having an external DAC is that you can buy yet
another component, have more interconnects, show if off to people and
brag about it.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Should I get a DAC?

2006-06-02 Thread Phil Leigh

Well - the internal DAC is very, very good but can be bettered - at a
price. If I were you, with that system, I'd worry about other things
rather than the DAC.

Oh yes - and in so many ways!
Don't fall into the trap of thinking that bits are bits - it just
ain't so.

Hi Fi World (one of the whackiest publications on the planet) has just
given the SB a 5 globe review - hurrah!...and this from a mag that
thinks anything not analogue is inherently wrong (how sad - never
mind).

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB mod on not mod, what to expect vs CD player?

2006-06-02 Thread Phil Leigh

BB - I think we are basically agreeing.
I am not a fan of v. expensive interconnects/mains cables etc - but I
can hear a difference between OK cables and rubbish cables.

My amplifier remark was a bit flippant (I apologise) but I do strongly
believe that the cables are as much part of the overall systems as the
output transistors or the regulation caps (for example). Not every amp
sounds the same - that's what I was really trying to say.
Regards
Phil

But back to the FIR filters: does anyone know much more about these

Well - they are sophisticated in some ways - but not in the way we'd
appreciate! Pro sound reinforcement is a whole different bag of
spanners...

and yes, FIR filters is part of the TACT proposition - some people will
disagree with the following, but IMHO you are better off trying the TACT
approach than trying to home brew your own solution...

Ok, good, this is what I was looking for. Would really love a chance
to hear for myself what a properly set up TacT system can do.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SMPS vs Linear: Jitter

2006-06-02 Thread ModMike

It is an interesting idea, and a familiar one. I've heard of other
products with a switching PS that contaminate the sound quality of
other gear -- either placed nearby, and/or plugged into the same power
strip.

One thing I notice, however, is if I listen with headphones to the SB3
on the standard switching PS, and then with the linear PS, the
difference is still very noticable, possibly even more so.

There may be something to that... the headphone amp uses an LDO
regulator from the 5V input as opposed to the higher internal voltage,
because it needs more power than the DAC and op-amp rails need. Also
that chip is known to be able to modulate high frequencies into the
audio range (we needed to add some shunting caps when it was found that
they could pick up the 2.4G emissions). Both of those are worth further
investigation wrt to SMPS vs Linear question. However, neither factor
affects the RCA outs so I'm not worried about those from what I've seen
.

Definitions:
http://www.answers.com/topic/theory says a theory is:
A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts
or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is
widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural
phenomena.

A hypothesis is:
A tentative explanation for an observation, phenomenon, or scientific
problem that can be tested by further investigation.

The difference is VERY important. Common misunderstanding and misuse
of the word theory can lead to all sorts of silliness, as we have
seen in the courts recently...

On the topic of this thread, I am pleased to see this sort of testing
being done. Someone once said if you're not producing numbers,
you're not doing engineering.
