[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Help needed: convert 24 bit WMA Lossless into WAV

2007-01-26 Thread Heuer

I have transcribed most of my vinyl using 44.1khz sampling at 24 bit
depth and it works fine on the SB3. If you read the SB3 specs you will
see it is capable of up to 48khz sampling and 24 bit depth so going any
higher is not going to work.

You could try something like Soundforge to recode the files to 48k/24.

In my case my 44.1k/24 FLAC files will not be recognised by Nero or any
CD player and will only play on a PC or when burned to DVD-A. The Red
Book (CD audio standard) is 44.1k/16 bit.

2007-01-26 Thread ModelCitizen

Not dead sure this is the correct forum for this post, but assuming you
have written here because you are audiophile inclined then no, EAC with
Lame is totally the wrong thing to to. Lame produces the MP3 file
format, a lossy format. You should use EAC plus Flac which produces
lossless files. If you set up EAC correctly (which is fiddle but there
are loads of tutorials around) and keep the .cue file then you will
never need to re-rip again as you will have a perfect bit for bit copy
of the CD.
Apple and Windows also have lossless file formats but personally I'd
never trust either of the two companies not to change something about
their file format that could lead to you having to rip them all again
just to get them to play in their newest player. Flac is the main
format used by most people here I think and the Squeezebox can decode
it to pcm, saving passing pcm over your wireless/wired network (i.e.
over 50% saving on bandwidth).

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: A Cut-Rate Audio phile’s Experience With a Linear Power Supply

2007-01-26 Thread dpac996

one can only tell if it makes a difference in the context of one's own
system. If your ancilliary components are susceptible to RF
interference in such a way as to manifest the problem to the audio
band, then yes, replacing the SMPS with a linear may make a difference.

After coming into some understanding of the cascaded regulation, I see
no reason why a linear would make the power supply, at the chip level
in the analog stage, any bit better than the stock SMPS. But hey it's
one guys opinion and there is a current market for it. In the
audiophile loony tunes business if you build it they will come.

cheers!

If it's just a question of RF interference there's no need to spend much
at all on a linear. I've just received a linear supply which cost $10

The problem with cheap linear PSUs is that they use cheap transformers
that, even if they don't produce a mechanical buzz, generate large
magnetic fields that can induce hum in analogue circuitry. Swings and

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Upgrade Advice

2007-01-26 Thread toaster75

Hi there,
I have had my SB for a few months and am very happy with it and it's
functionality. However I have noticed that compared to my Marantz cd
52se the sound is a little bass light.

My system consists of an SB3 connected to a Audiolab 8000a using Van
Den Hul 102mkIII, and a pair of mission 773e. Music filesare all
encoded in FLAC using EAC. I listen to all sorts of music but a large
proportion of bass heavy music!

Now admittedly my system has never been adept at playing the music i
really like but with this new lack of low end grunt the situation has
got to a point where iam prepared to do something about it. The only
trouble is where do you folks think i should start?

Should i invest in a DAC, Amp or speakers? Budget is flexible but
no more than £500... Iam prepared to go secondhand.

Looking forward to your suggestions.
Thx

I usually agree with tomjtx, but not this time. If what you want is
better bass, why not get a good subwoofer? Short of getting (probably
pretty pricey) full-range speakers, this would seem your best option.

That will affect the sound a _lot_ more than a dac would. You could
probably get a used rel strata for that price.

You can also set up digital eq using inguz http://www.inguzaudio.com

It all starts at the source. The lower end that you're now missing can
never really be returned by the downstream components.

Either get a good DAC or have the SB3 modded, including a good power
supply. I think the DAC would be the surer bet - certainly easier to
change again if it doesn't suit your tastes.

I don't agree here. The OP seems to have a frequency response issue, and
didn't like his original bass all that much. A new dac is _not_ going to
make cheapish speakers suddenly able to give good bass. Simply won't
happen. A good sub will, and if it's a really good one like the rel, it
can stay in the system through many upgrades.

The power supply thing is certainly _not_ a magic bullet, in my
experience. Got some elpacs cheap on ebay, stuck one in my system:
neither I nor any of my friends can tell the difference. YMMV, of
course.

Yes, there are dacs that sound better, even lots better. No, I don't
think that would be a good place to start in this system. The sub
_will_ give better bass, no question. And it can still be around later
if/when the OP buys a lavry/benchmark/mytek/citypulse, whatever.

I would say it's

meaning, whoever decided the source was the most important component of
the audio chain (rather than the speakers) must have had something

I have never heard any difference in interconnects at all. But I tend to
buy decent ones, such as Kimber PBJ, mostly one the weakest link theory.

Balanced connections have many theoretical benefits many of which are
easily shown. They are vastly more resistant to noise.

But balanced connections have zero impact on impedance mismatches.
If the driver and receiving components are mismatched, changing the wire
is not going to change the impedance on either end.

RCA jacks were chosen for hi fi because they were cheap as surplus
World War 2 gear when the returning servicemen got their GI bill degrees
and started the hifi hobby. They have continued in consumer gear because
they were used by earlier consumer gear.

Professional audio is all balanced using XLR. No theory, just fact.
From the mic, to the preamp, mixers, recording device, mastering, etc.
it is all balanced.

I do agree that wire can be a LCR filter network. And I believe this
network could have audible impact. But the high end obsession with
megadollar cables doesn't match up with what happens in studios and live
ventures, IMHO, YMMV and all that.

Perceived bass extension can be improved with a good linear regulated
power supply. Further results are greater spaciousness and
naturalness. There are those that disagree, sometimes based on
experience, sometimes on ignorance and/or scepticism. But for some of
us the effect is obvious - I am posting my opinion for you here and not
looking for a debate with the naysayers. If you give this a try, just
make sure you let the new power supply burn in first - until the caps
form the sound will be worse. Whether you are looking for better
quality bass, or you just want more quantity of the existing bass is
something that's hard to tell - if its just more quantity you want then
the sub may be the best suggestion, but that's not how I interpreted
your post either.

Interesting - so if you buy PBJ or better then single ended cables are
irrelevant too?

You and I experience vastly different realities Pat, but I am not
looking to start a debate so will leave this one here. Thanks for the
response to my questions.

 and Skunk wants some too!

 Is that right, Skunk?

Oops, I realized that right after I posted it. What I actually meant
was:

I want some of whatever was in that source-first KOOL-AID.

I always thought the expression came from the The Electric Kool-Aid
Acid Test (either the actual events or the Tom Wolfe novel), but
apparently it's from the Jim Jones cult massacre of 913 people- some of
whom willfully drank the cyanide laced Flavor Aid popsicles. So it goes.

Jan, what I meant was that you obviously believe the source is
important, which I agree with. I don't think a great source can
overcome a mediocre receiver though (not that your's is mediocre). But
if you have a balanced 2ch amp sitting there and a balanced DAC, but
choose to use the receiver- that would be taking the source-first
ideology to new heights. Amplification may be solved as opaqueice is
fond of saying, but all the extra circuitry in the receiver is less
than ideal... IMHO.

Actually , totoro, I could agree with you as well.

I agree with everyone. As Jim mentioned it's source first. He liked the
speakers with the old source, but the Sb3 sounds different. Maybe the
old source warmed the low end, or the Sb3 deals with bass transients
better with a linear supply (as richidoo once theorized).

Whatever the case, a new sub *could* fix it- but OTOH a new DAC may
well negate the need for the sub _and_ the power supply. The Sb3 could
even mimic the warmed output of the cd player with digital equalization
(but then you'd still need the power supply!).

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Replay-gain and Amp clipping Question

2007-01-26 Thread CFP

Here's a rather newbie question that I've been thinking about for a bit.

Which of these is theoretically worse for the speakers and/or more
likely to lead to amp clipping:

A) Untouched modern rock/pop track with digital clipping being played
back at 90dB average. The amplifier's volume is set to -25dB to achieve
this SPL.

B) The same rock/pop track but replay-gained down 10dB to avoid digital
clipping. Now to get the same 90dB SPL as Scenario A, the amplifier's
volume has to be at say, -10dB.

Basically the question is does replay-gain (or any other form of
turning digital level down) increase the likelihood of analog clipping?
Thanks for any input.

I am not following you here. The PBJs are under $100, not thousands.
With a $2000 transporter, the weakest link argument says you should not
use $5 radio shack cables.

I've never heard any difference. There may or may not be any on single
ended. For things that have balanced, I use balanced. YMMV.

Skunk, you're most probably right, and for the music part of my system
I would prefer to go straight from balanced dac to amp. But this is
part of my surround system, so I also need the amp hooked up to the
receiver, a Denon avr4800. And in my defense, I started my system
upgrade with getting new speakers, BW 803. Then I got a new amp, Rotel
RB1090. So I'm working my way back to the source. :-)
I still need to do the test though, hooking up the SB3 analog out
straight to the amp, to see what difference skipping the, admittedly
mediocre, Denon receiver makes...
Note btw that the RB1090 has balanced input, but I don't think they are
real balanced input like, say, a Krell. At least, that's what I
understand. So I'm not really sure if it would be so much better to
drive the Rotel through the balanced inputs...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Really though, am i getting the best out of this Ripping

Model Citizen --

I rip FLACs with EAC in secure mode + accurate rip. However, you also
mentioned .cue files in passing. I have a vague idea of what they are,
but had a few questions that maybe you could help me with.
1) I understand their value if you want to burn an identical CD at some
later date (using EAC, eg), but what does the Slimserver software do
with .cue sheets that is superior to just the plain old FLACs?
2) Where do you store .cue files -- all in one directory, or do you put
each one in the directory with the FLAC files?
3) What's the best/most automated way to get EAC to create them?

Thanks,
muski
(apologies if I should be asking in another forum...)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Replay-gain and Amp clipping Question

2007-01-26 Thread Phil Leigh

Digital doesn't clip in the same way as analogue in the replay chain.
The clipping is already on the CD/WAV so the replay volume has no
effect on it.
However, some DACS react badly to a 0dB signal (which should not be
present on properly mastered material). So lowering the digital volume
by a very small amount will avoid this problem...but the clipping is
still there as I've explained.
