[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Help needed: convert 24 bit WMA Lossless into WAV
I have transcribed most of my vinyl using 44.1khz sampling at 24 bit depth and it works fine on the SB3. If you read the SB3 specs you will see it is capable of up to 48khz sampling and 24 bit depth so going any higher is not going to work. You could try something like Soundforge to recode the files to 48k/24. In my case my 44.1k/24 FLAC files will not be recognised by Nero or any CD player and will only play on a PC or when burned to DVD-A. The Red Book (CD audio standard) is 44.1k/16 bit. -- Heuer Heuer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2543 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32098 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Really though, am i getting the best out of this Ripping
Not dead sure this is the correct forum for this post, but assuming you have written here because you are audiophile inclined then no, EAC with Lame is totally the wrong thing to to. Lame produces the MP3 file format, a lossy format. You should use EAC plus Flac which produces lossless files. If you set up EAC correctly (which is fiddle but there are loads of tutorials around) and keep the .cue file then you will never need to re-rip again as you will have a perfect bit for bit copy of the CD. Apple and Windows also have lossless file formats but personally I'd never trust either of the two companies not to change something about their file format that could lead to you having to rip them all again just to get them to play in their newest player. Flac is the main format used by most people here I think and the Squeezebox can decode it to pcm, saving passing pcm over your wireless/wired network (i.e. over 50% saving on bandwidth). http://flac.sourceforge.net MC -- ModelCitizen Now what? one can only tell if it makes a difference in the context of one's own system. If your ancilliary components are susceptible to RF interference in such a way as to manifest the problem to the audio band, then yes, replacing the SMPS with a linear may make a difference. After coming into some understanding of the cascaded regulation, I see no reason why a linear would make the power supply, at the chip level in the analog stage, any bit better than the stock SMPS. Hi there, I have had my SB for a few months and am very happy with it and it's functionality. However I have noticed that compared to my Marantz cd 52se the sound is a little bass light. I don't agree here. The OP seems to have a frequency response issue, and didn't like his original bass all that much. A new dac is _not_ going to make cheapish speakers suddenly able to give good bass. Simply won't happen. A good sub will, and if it's a really good one like the rel, it can stay in the system through many upgrades. The power supply thing is certainly _not_ a magic bullet, in my experience. Got some elpacs cheap on ebay, stuck one in my system: neither I nor any of my friends can tell the difference. YMMV, of course. Yes, there are dacs that sound better, even lots better. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Replay-gain and Amp clipping Question
Here's a rather newbie question that I've been thinking about for a bit. Which of these is theoretically worse for the speakers and/or more likely to lead to amp clipping: A) Untouched modern rock/pop track with digital clipping being played back at 90dB average. The amplifier's volume is set to -25dB to achieve this SPL. B) The same rock/pop track but replay-gained down 10dB to avoid digital clipping. Now to get the same 90dB SPL as Scenario A, the amplifier's volume has to be at say, -10dB. Basically the question is does replay-gain (or any other form of turning digital level down) increase the likelihood of analog clipping? With a $2000 transporter, the weakest link argument says you should not use $5 radio shack cables. I've never heard any difference. There may or may not be any on single ended. For things that have balanced, I use balanced. YMMV. -- Pat http://www.pfarrell.com/music/slimserver/slimsoftware.html ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Which DAC chip is used by the Lavry DA10?
Skunk;174656 Wrote: Jan, what I meant was that you obviously believe the source is important, which I agree with. I don't think a great source can overcome a mediocre receiver though (not that your's is mediocre). But if you have a balanced 2ch amp sitting there and a balanced DAC, but choose to use the receiver- that would be taking the source-first ideology to new heights. Amplification may be solved as opaqueice is fond of saying, but all the extra circuitry in the receiver is less than ideal... IMHO. Skunk, you're most probably right, and for the music part of my system I would prefer to go straight from balanced dac to amp. But this is part of my surround system, so I also need the amp hooked up to the receiver, a Denon avr4800. And in my defense, I started my system upgrade with getting new speakers, BW 803. Then I got a new amp, Rotel RB1090. So I'm working my way back to the source. :-) I still need to do the test though, hooking up the SB3 analog out straight to the amp, to see what difference skipping the, admittedly mediocre, Denon receiver makes... Note btw that the RB1090 has balanced input, but I don't think they are real balanced input like, say, a Krell. At least, that's what I understand. So I'm not really sure if it would be so much better to drive the Rotel through the balanced inputs... jan -- jmourik jmourik's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7123 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31949 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Really though, am i getting the best out of this Ripping
Model Citizen -- I rip FLACs with EAC in secure mode + accurate rip. However, you also mentioned .cue files in passing. I have a vague idea of what they are, but had a few questions that maybe you could help me with. 1) I understand their value if you want to burn an identical CD at some later date (using EAC, eg), but what does the Slimserver software do with .cue sheets that is superior to just the plain old FLACs? 2) Where do you store .cue files -- all in one directory, or do you put each one in the directory with the FLAC files? 3) What's the best/most automated way to get EAC to create them? [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Replay-gain and Amp clipping Question
Digital doesn't clip in the same way as analogue in the replay chain. The clipping is already on the CD/WAV so the replay volume has no effect on it. However, some DACS react badly to a 0dB signal (which should not be present on properly mastered material). So lowering the digital volume by a very small amount will avoid this problem...but the clipping is still there as I've explained. -- Phil Leigh Phil Leigh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=85 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32131 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
