[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Really though, am i getting the best out of this Ripping

2007-01-26 Thread ModelCitizen

Not dead sure this is the correct forum for this post, but assuming you
have written here because you are audiophile inclined then no, EAC with
Lame is totally the wrong thing to to. Lame produces the MP3 file
format, a lossy format. You should use EAC plus Flac which produces
lossless files. If you set up EAC correctly (which is fiddle but there
are loads of tutorials around) and keep the .cue file then you will
never need to re-rip again as you will have a perfect bit for bit copy
of the CD.
Apple and Windows also have lossless file formats but personally I'd
never trust either of the two companies not to change something about
their file format that could lead to you having to rip them all again
just to get them to play in their newest player. Flac is the main
format used by most people here I think and the Squeezebox can decode
it to pcm, saving passing pcm over your wireless/wired network (i.e.
over 50% saving on bandwidth).

When I rang NAIM to ask them about whether there were any likely issues
around using a Transporter directly into a NAIM power amp I was told by
Adam Meredith that the only thing that was required was the correct
output impedance and signal level. He didn't mention ultrasonics at
all.

I sold my last SlimServer 2 to a friend and he asked me what he should
run with it. I told him that on these forums the Aego-M had been
recommeded and he bought it. He's very pleased. We were both surprised
by quite a few things about it:
The weight of all the speakers - they are heavy!
The sound - it's very good indeed for stuff that looks like it's an
upgrade for computer speakers
The size of the speakers - the two main speakers are tiny. The bass
bin is large.
There is mid range - from the make up of the speakers it doesn't look
like there should be any but there is.
The bass - it's huge. There is setting on the bass bin... 1,2 or 3.
It's hard to imagine anyone using 3 or some using 2..
For 100 UK pounds they are phenominal.

But you need somewhere to put the bass bin. It's not pretty.

And the files you're streaming. You are much more likely to get drop
outs with higher bandwidth lossless formats like Flac than with highly
compressed lower bandwidth formats like mp3.
For reliability an all wired setup is definitely best, two wireless
hops is the worst. Most people use one wireless hop (to Squeezebox)
only.
With 128k mp3s you are quite likely to get perfect streaming across two
wireless hops as long as you have good signal strength. With any
lossless files the result is uncertain (although as Flac is decoded on
the Squeezebox itself it should perform best of all the lossless
formats as it will require a little less than half of the bandwidth of
other lossless formats which are decoded on the computer and streamed
to the Squeezebox as PCM)

Caveat: I may be wrong and often am.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Are there any PRat's out there?

2006-12-30 Thread ModelCitizen

I've use the SB2/3 with various DACS and also used solely the analogue
outs.
For a system such as you are planning you'll need a dac without
question. In my experience the next most important upgrade is to get a
linear power supply (like the Elpac), which can be got extremely
cheaply. I have no idea about the other Bolder type
upgrades/modifications.

Personally I didn't like the SB2/3 with the Benchmark Dac, finding it
tiring, harsh and rather flat and metallic (Others think the
combination sounds wonderful though). I also used an Arcam Black Box,
which was comfortably warm but vague and indistinct. The best one I've
used was a Perpetual Technologies PA-3 (sometimes with PA-1 upsampling
thingy and Monolithic power supply). This had all the detail of the
Benchmark but was not tiring or harsh and the sound appeared more three
dimensional.
I've not used the Lavry but would love to try it.

The Transporter sounds much better than the SB3 with any of the Dac's
I've tried. The sound is extremely clean and pure, and listening is
very comfortable indeed.

But, to put this into some sort of context, nothing I've tried sounds
as good as my NAIM CDX CD player which just seems to have more depth,
body, welly and sheer musicality than anything else I've heard.

With one's eyes shut and someone else switching between the
SB3/Transporter and the CDX, playing the same music simultaneously at
the same levels it is simple to pick out the CDX every single time.
Everything else sounds a little thin and insubstantial in comparison.

The difference is extremely apparent if one has smoked some weed.

I agree with all of these posts, in that, what sounds good to the

However, the original quote said that no pre-amp is best.
But, if the Transporter does not have a pre-amp how can it drive my
power amp? It must have a pre-amp (but no pre-amp is good, according to
CliveB).
And a follow on is... how on earth can I just unplug the Transporter
from my power amp then plug in into my pre-amp and it sounds fine
i.e it does not blow it up! The signals levels for a feed to a pre-amp
and a power amp vary by a magnitude but I don't have to tell the
Transporter what it's feeding, it just seems to know. How can that
be?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Why is "no preamp" best?

2006-12-22 Thread ModelCitizen

ClibeB's post in another thread has me confused and I was hoping that I
may get some input that would clear up my confusion.
cliveb;164218 Wrote:
> The best preamp possible is no preamp at all.
You can have a hifi set up wihtout a pre-amp? I currently use a
Transporter directly into a NAIM power amp. However I am under the
impression that I am using the Transporter's built-in pre-amp. Is this
not true? If it is true why should the pre-amp be better than than the
NAIM pre-amp I used to use?
NAIM dealers tend to say that using another pre-amp (rather than a
NAIM) can introduce "instability" (yup, I know... not too technical,
but then NAIM dealers tend towards the wooly rather than the
technical). Patrick Dixon has said on these forums that the pre-amp
should block very high freuencies (out-of-hearing range one presumes)
to work properly with a NAIM amp, otherwise "instability" is the
result. I assume that if this is the case with NAIM it might well be
the case with other power amp/pre-amp combos.
My experience is that not using a pre-amp with a Transporter "might"
produce a harsher sound (not tested as testing is very hard to do in
this case). I may well be entirely wrong about this though so please
take this observation with a dose of salt.

Personally I far prefer the sound of the Transporter to the SB3 Dac1
combo (which is what I had before buying the Transporter). I was never
happy with the Benchmark's cold, uninviting analytical 2d-ness. But of
course this is my personal opinion and is probably disagreed with by

Other dacs will sound different (better/worse depending on the person)
to the Transporter.

I'm only certain of the answer to one part of your question... you'd be
daft to use the Transporter with another Dac.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Questions on my setup

2006-11-28 Thread ModelCitizen

I had the same set up. For best quality output I used this set up:
Mute SB3 analog outputs (0), set SB3 digital output as constant (i.e.
without any volume control), leave Benchmark such that that the volume
knob is disabled (setting on back I think).
Then use the amp volume to set listening levels.
However, my pre-amp had a remote... I wouldn't have had this setup if I
had to get up off the floor to change the volume!
I assume you have an integrated amp? I had a separate power and pre-amp
and found that the Benchmark Dac pre-amp ran my power amp very nicely
indeed... but I left the pre-amp in the system so I could use the
remote to change the volume.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: IR problems on Transporter

2006-11-17 Thread ModelCitizen

Just to finish off the thread. I decided to try and see what it'd be
like with the rack facing up the room... and it was not as bad as I'd
thought, mainly as now I can shove it almost up against a side wall
whereas before there was a large gap at the back to accomodate leads,
fiddling etc. This seemed to go hand in hand with a tidy up and slight
reorganisation of the lounge, vastly improving it's Feng Shui.

Although the Transporter is still at an angle to the place I usually
reside I am coming at it from the other side so the IR reception is not
blocked by the knob. I'm pleased with the results and glad not to have
to use the telescope or reflecting mirrors and still get pretty perfect
reception on my Transporter. The only slight problem is that when the
lounge door is open I can only see the very edge of the rack and none
of the components at all!

Thanks for all the help.

Hmmm, thanks for this.
It looks like an rf remote might be the way to go (however buying yet
another bit of technology goes against the grain somewhat as I'm
currently trying to reduce the number of bits of technology I own as I
just seem to end up repairing and configuring things all the time,
Scalextric and Squeezebox being the two most major culprits by a long

$30 is very cheap indeed.

Does the rf remote add any extra lag time in?

2006-11-14 Thread ModelCitizen

Mark Lanctot;154769 Wrote:
> I assume the photo is taken from your normal listening position?
No, not really. My usual listening position is central in the room,
either comatose on the floor infront of where the Scalextric
controllers are (on cushions with head on a poof) or on the sofa behind
where the photo is taken (again centrally between the speakers). This
position is a bit too far form the speakers for my liking and I have to
squint a bit to see the Transporter's screen.

I just tried aiming the remote at the ceiling and was surprised to see
that if I was standing in front of the unit it sill responded. However,
as soon as that knob gets in the way of the remote's line of site
there's no response at all.

I would prefer it if the hifi rack faced me but there is no elegant or
practical way to do this in this room (which is odd as it's not small).
The angle and IR reponse has never been a problem with the Naim stuff or
the Squeezebox 3 (which was angled towards me anyway).

I am contemplating turning the whole rack round to face down the room
(with Transporter towards the bottom).. which will look really pants
and get in the way of the right hand speaker (not to mention the lounge
door being opened by small children and whacking into the front of the
hifi rack).

I have an iPaq which runs the handheld web interface quite well, but
it's nothing like as simple as using the remote (and means taking my
eye off the race for so much longer). I'd find it hard to contemplate
getting a Nokia 770 just to run my hifi...

I like the Telescope idea, or perhaps turning the Transporter upside
down.. or maybe I should just move house.

I almost think you're serious!

As you can see my room is meticulously planned out. Turning the
Transporter at an angle has already destroyed the equilibrium and
balance of my favourite play room. Tilting it would jeopardise the
room's Feng Shui even further and may even result in a damaged
Transporter

It's not gnerally a simple as holding an arm in the air. It's holding
it in the air, twisting the wrist back and forth and waving my arm from
side to side to side until I get any response and then watching in
dismay as the screen occasionally updates at what appears to be random
intervals. Almost inevitably I end up sitting up and loosing the
current race to my son. It has occasionally struck me that changing CDs
might be easier and the result more certain.

Enjoying yourself Patrick?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] IR problems on Transporter

2006-11-13 Thread ModelCitizen

I'm beginning to think we need a forum dedicated to the Transporter. I
was not too sure where best to put this post.

I am finding the Transporter does not respond to my remote as I expect
it to (I've tried new batteries). I think this is due to my listening
position, splayed out on the floor, and the fact that the Transporter
is the top box on my rack (height of about 1 to 1.25 metre off the
floor). I find I have to hold the remote high in the air (i.e. at a
similar height to the Transporter) otherwise the Transporter does not
receive the IR signal.

I've looked at the front of the Transporter to see if I can see the IR
receiver thingy but can't easily tell where it is. My feeling is that
it may be directly above the knob and so the knob is blocking line of
sight when I'm on the floor. Can anyone (who's taken it apart or got
better eyes than me) confirm that his is correct (or not)?

Cheers

Well, you are one ahead of me then... cos I thing that what I want is
probably possible... but it's my lack of understanding of the (overly
complex?) interface that makes it impossible for me to set up.
Anyway I've just completely reinstalled SlimServer and all my
chosen plugins. I've not installed MusicInfo cos I wanted to get up an
runnning as quick as I could, spending little time on configuration.
And guess what... the Transporter screen is almost as I would have it
as default.
Now... there are only two things I think I need to do to get the
displays dead right for me
1) Map the Transporter Visual button to the remote (I think this is
probably possible)
2) Use extended text info more than once, such that when I hit the
Visual botton it will display the extended text I choose (in my case
the Comment tag).

I am trying to achieve the scrolling display of the "comment" tag in
the right hand display at the press of one remote button (i.e when i
want to see it). If you know of a way to do this I would be very
grateful indeed (and even buy you a three pints of best bitter if you
ever got to Brighton).

One thing that constantly bugs me and that could possibly be tied into
the display configuration and the way the whole display thing works is
the way the Now Playing screen works. Currently, for instance, if I am
listening to a Last.Fm station I can't just go back (left) into the
Last.FM stuff to submit a preference for a track. I have to go right
through the top level SlimServer menu to get back to Last.FM before I
can submit my preference, which is definitely not right, intuitive or
friendly and is far too slow.

But perhaps I am missing something (not at all unusual).

Yup, I agree with all of this. And configuration for anything to do with
the display should all be performed from one screen or section (and
possibly sub-screens), including the screensavers. MusicInfo is
definitely the place to start.
I'd like to see a facility to stop any display segment from scrolling
as well.
There is a lot to get into one nice, intuitive and simple config screen

I'll have to second this. Whatever the reason, my Transporter just
seems to sound better and better. I have a lot of trouble turning it
off at night to go to bed.
It really does beat the pants off my old set up of linear PSU, SB3 and
Benchmark Dac1, which was flat, unengaging and really pretty unlikeable
by comparison.

Now, if only I could configure the screens correctly..

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Trasporter display configuration - done much?

2006-11-08 Thread ModelCitizen

The way I look at it the diaplay is split into four segments (double
line display is two). Excepting the Browse function I'd like to choose
what appears in each display segment and what happens in a few moments
in each display (if I should want anything to change, which I don't).
Unfortunately the whole idea about the way it works at the moment seems
a little arse about face. I understand exactly why this has come about
though but think it is time to reassess the way the diplay processing
works (expecially as I can't get the display to do exactly what I want
and am sure it can do what I want). Using three (or more?) different
SlimServer screens to program the display is not user-friendly. Only
one screen (including sub-screens parhaps) should suffice and would be
much more understandable.

The SlimServer idea of a screensaver seems a bit redundant to me and
could be dumped. One of the things that has contributed to the current
confused state is the idea of plugins and how they have been integrated
(or rather added in after the fact) I think.

The Transporter's dual screen has made the e... organically-grown
way the display programming works apparent. It is probably time to take
a user-centric, or ergonomic view and redesign it appropriately.
A friendlier MusicInfo seems the best place to start, all else could
follow after that.
The ability to chose whether the text in each screen segment scrolls or
not would be useful too.
I've previously written initial ramblings of how the display
programming might work here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29084&page=3

I'll give your suggestions, ceejay, some thought later but at this
moment I am running up and down the stairs between PC and Transporter
trying to get the display as I want it (not, not really).

I'd like to use the second display to show the comment field as all my
rips include bios and reviews in this tag, but getting it exactly as I
want it has foxed me so far.

My display is now a right mess and resetting MusicInfo to defaults does
not sort it out.

Using browse I can brwse through albums (for instance) but when I hit
the right button, instead of getting the track listing I receive the
comment (which is useless as it's the same for all the tracks). I can't
seem to figure out how to get back to listing the tracks.

It's made all much harder as I don't currently have a laptop in the
house so I have to make changes upstairs on my main desktop machine and
then run downstairs to see what affect they've had on the display.

Oh.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Trasporter display configuration - done much?

2006-10-29 Thread ModelCitizen

Has anyone tried messing about with the display configuration for the
Trasporter? I ask as I have spent a good deal of time trying to achieve
a certain set up for the displays and am finding it all a bit difficult
and confusing. I'm using Michael Herger's great MusicInfo plugin.
I'm interested to know if anyone else has tried messing about in depth
with the display settings and what their experience has been (i.e. am i
just a bit thick!).
I've been posting about it on the third party plugin forum:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29084
It's only at the end of the thread where I make up my mind what I
really want to achieve though.
Thanks for any input.

In my experince it's rare that people turn thewir hifi up loud. It
confuses me why so many audiophiles buys kit that only sounds good
loud. I think that when people buy gear they should take care to buy
stuff that sounds good at the volume they are most often likely to
listen to it at (this is just one reason why correctly driven Shahinian
Arcs are so cool). This can sometimes preclude hi wattage speakers and
hard-to-drive speakers.

I ordered mine directly from SlimDevices on 05 October 2006 and got
confirmation and another email saying the SB3 had shipped within 30
minutes! The SB3 arrived a day or two later.
However both my enquiries to [EMAIL PROTECTED] requesting a
projected shipping date for my Transporter have met with a deafening

Maybe they're a bit busy.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter with no preamp and Naim power amp

2006-10-15 Thread ModelCitizen

Hello,
I'm sorry to have to do this but I am very flummoxed indeed.
I have a Transporter on order and I am looking forward to reducing mu
HiFi.
I want to rung the Transporter directly into my NAIM Nap180 power amp
and do away with my Benchmark1 DAC and NAIM NAC102 preamp.

However, recent talk about Squeezebox white noise of death and
amplifier input impediences have made me wonder if what I'm proposing
is wise.

I have two questions I'd really be grateful of some help with:

1) Am I right to think that the best way to configure a Transporter for
use as a preamp is to use some sort of internal jumpers or something to
ensure that total output can never exceed the input requirement of the
power amp? And then I have to fiddle about with the software stuff to
work out what this optimal level is? You can tell I am confused can't
you??

2) I can't tell if the Transporter outputs what I need for the power
amp I have presently. I've read the posts, but the spec of my amp
doesn't seem make it clear (it seems a bit bereft of the details I
require perhaps?). This is it - Naim NAP180:

Power output: Continuous, 8 ohms 60 watts per channel
Transient 300VA
Voltage gain +29dB
Input impedance 18 kilohms
Frequency response -3dB @ 3Hz & 50kHz

Any help very appreciated indeed!

However, the way I look at it is this:

I get a free SB3 (if offer is still on SlimDevices web site).
I can sell my Benchmark Dac1 (at last!)
I can sell my Naim pre-amp

Which, if I get reasonable deals on the kit about should mean it ends
up costing errr... nothing!

2006-10-05 Thread ModelCitizen

I ordered a Transporter directly from SlimDevices today as a UK
distributor told me that the UK distributors will not receive them till
mid-october. I chose 2 day shipping. Half an hour after the order was
made I received an email stating that it had shipped. Amazing!

I am a little perplexed as to why anyone would order from a distributor
as they do not seem to be offering the free SB3 with it (I did not look
at all of them but the one I talked to said that their offer ended on
the 15th September). I was surprised to find out that the UK
disributors are not given the offer by SlimDevices (i.e. supplied with
a free SB3 for each Transporter sold) and that any that matched the
SlimDevices free SB offer had to take the hit for the free device on
their Transporter margin, which seemed rather unfair.

I'm interested to know how the VAT and import duty (which I ws told
would be 5%) is to be paid. Do I write a cheque when it is delivered or
what?

And even if you can't tell the difference with your existing system

peronally I find that most MP3s make the treble a little phasey

I use Naim gear with an SB2 and a DAC 1. Even with the SB2 linear PSU
the sound can be harsh and clinical when compared with my Naim CDX or
vinyl (other Benchmark owners have shot me down in flames for saying
this though!). However, I have got used to the detail and have not
found any reasonable alternatives yet (it's not easy to try out a
variety of DACs!). I am pretty sure that what I require is a
non-oversampling DAC (the Benchmark is an oversampling DAC) but the
ones I have heard so far sound a bit muggy in comparison to the
Benchmark. I think I'll wait for the Transporter now (but how do I get
to hear that?). If it's good enough I should be able to sell my Dac1,
Naim pre-amp and SB2 with linear PSU.

Saying that I have a number of Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs (MFSL) and
Analogue Productions CD remasters and these all sound fabulous. Stan
Getz, Joao Gilberto - Getz Gilberto [1963.MFSL Ultradisk] and Pink
Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon [1973.MFSL Ultradisk] are especially
stunning.

Ripping directly from vinyl does nothing to improve the sound (as you
might expect).

I do find it exasperating that (due to bad mastering I presume) many of
the CDs I have sound absolutely terrible on my set-up. I can't bear to
listen to long time favourite Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures and have
to play it instead on my computer or iPod for it to be enjoyable.

My guess is that this was a product pushed by Sean against the advice
of others in the company and that consumers have ended up with a
compromise between Sean's current obsession with quality and the
audiophile market and the market realities (profit) pushed by others in
the company.
So we've ended up with a product that, although technically brilliant,
does not fit the Audiophile market for (at least) two reasons:

1) The software is just not up to it (it's very hard to believe that
Slimserver 6.5 will be OK enough by September... at least judging by my
last two years experience).
2) It looks pretty pants. It looks like something out of the
seventies... all fuss. The remote is the thing most people use surely?
Yet the remote looks cheap and the unit has loads of buttons. Do many
(audiophile) people get off their sofa, walk to the thing, and then
bend down to press buttons? Surely not. It should definitely be a box
with a good remote (maybe even one with a display) and much less fuss.

Even more worrying is that even I with my 46 year old cloth ears can
easily hear the difference between my DAC1 and the Squeezebox DAC
(unfortunately neither compare to the loveliness of a Naim CDX).

Sean, you really need to be more circumspect.
