Last update to the scores is now on Soaring spot
All classes scored finally.

Just my own personal thanks to people who helped the scoring along the way,
Heath for his upload page and server, Nick for the original website setup, Tim
for scoring scripts and ongoing fault resolution, Ailsa and Matt for helping
sort out the final chaos the last couple of days. (We were always going to be
in trouble when a super computer takes 70 min to score one flight).

Re: [Aus-soaring] NSW state comps

2014-12-20 Thread Scott Lennon

Well its run and done. We had the wind up dinner Saturday night and presented
the trophies and bottles of wine. The event was superbly administered and the
weather was challenging and rewarding with some big tasks (maybe just a little
tooo big Ailsa) and interesting changing gear weather. One minute your belting
along at 12000ft and 120kts then your struggling to get home in 0.5kt and best
L/D.

The winners were

Club Class Nathan Johnson
15m and Standard Matt Gage
18m ClassDavid Peitsch
Open Class Paul Mander

Fastest speed of the comp 131.1kph by Dave Peitsch
Fastest Std Class 130.3kph by Tom Claffey

Unfortunately the scoring system crashed out in a big way leading to std/15m
records being destroyed in the crash and and many flights having to be
evaluated manually (we suspect we have found a flaw in the scoring by setting a
very cunning task.) Anyway please bear with us while we reconstruct the contest
from the start and get the scores up on the website, except Club Class which
worked perfectly(must be the pilots). I will post again when they are done.

2014-12-17 Thread Scott Lennon
Thanks to the wonderful skills of Mr Shirley, the scores on soaring spot now
reflect the state comp rules for lay days. Note that the score allocated for
laydays is continually updated depending on the scores for future days. But day
to day the results will be correctly averaged and penalties applied for laydays.

Another interesting day today with lower height bands and blue skies. Day 2 I
was leaving at 12,000ft and today I left some at 3,500ft.

What’s wrong with the scoring Scott?

In the day by day totals for the 15 metre class,
http://www.soaringspot.com/nsw2014/results/15-meter/day-by-day.html , Matt Gage
and Tom Claffey top the results, despite neither having flown on day 1
according to
http://www.soaringspot.com/nsw2014/results/15-meter/daily/day1.html .

It appears that both have been given 1000 points over and above what they
scored on day 2.

John Orton should be first according to the stats from day 1 day 2.

Brilliant to see open class sized tasks set. Without digging into the traces it
seems the 18m gliders were left a little wanting compared to genuine 60:1 open

Congrats Panda. Nice flight!!

Oh to see more big wings at comps with water in trail. Launching first and

Derek,

Both of us had pre-declared lay days for day 1 due to our gliders being used at
joeyglide.

This gives an average score for the days we fly for that day.

What looks to be wrong is that average is meant to be reduced by 5% I believe,
which hasn't happened

as a separate class. At this stage you would be 1st or 2nd.

[Aus-soaring] NSW State comps - Temora

2014-10-13 Thread Scott Lennon
Its one month to run on the early bird discount to enter the NSW State Gliding
Championships at Temora.

We have been enjoying some good early season weather the last few weeks. My
last topped out at 11,000 (yes on oxy) and the thermals were regularly pushing
the 7 knot average. So if you what to practise in the area, contact the club
and we will sort out the tug.

Not many official entry forms in yet, but lots who have said they are coming.
So why not just do it now so us poor organisers can start the plans rolling.

Not many places have the website advertised so if you know somewhere, spread
the word.

[Aus-soaring] NSW State Comps Narromine December 1 to December 8 2012

2012-10-02 Thread Colin Turner
Pilots thinking about attending the NSW State Comps at Narromine are reminded
that your entry needs to be completed within October if you are take advantage
of the early bird discount to the entry fee.

Pilots who have registered on the comps web site still need to complete a hard
copy entry form and mail this together with their entry fee before the end of
October to get the discount.

Entry fees are refundable if for some reason you cant make it to Narromine.

I am sure that any pilot that has flown at Narromine late November/ early
December will confirm that given a fair go with the weather you can experience
some of the best flying to be had anywhere in Australia. Consider spending a
few days at the Narromine Cup Week to get your hand in then continue on to fly
the Comps the following week.

You will find the Comps web site at www.nswgc2012.com.au

I think Luke was responding to Bernard's second post which is congratulatory

that the 3 pilots in question would have placed regardless of their choice of
modern 18m glider.

  Hi Simon

I can see that you are trying to spice up this newsgroup. Good try -
good on you!!!

In all seriousness, Simon, having three ASG 29 in the comp and having
all three pilots

on the podium is by no means an isolated case. It has happened at
various Nationals

in Europe and America and is one of many reasons why the ASG 29 is
widely regarded

as the top ship in 18m class these days.

Especially in countries like Australia its spectacular performance in
high speed cruise

makes the glider attractive. Not even the very best of today's open
class ships can stay

with it and it doesn't seem to matter whether the aircraft has
developed spar bumps or

  not.

But don't take my word for it and talk to Butch. He has just placed
his second order

for an ASG 29(E) – number sixteen (16) in my sales territory.

On another matter, are you coming to the Waikerie coaching week in
January?

  Your confirmation would be appreciated!

  Kind regards

Re: [Aus-soaring] NSW State Comps

2007-11-21 Thread Tim Shirley
In the interests of free speech, I do not believe that this group should
have a moderator.

However, I think it would be appropriate for those with a vested
interest in a particular product to make that interest clear when
posting on this list (and when writing articles in Soaring Australia)
especially when they are praising or promoting the products they sell.

I have no objection to this list being used to advertise (that is free
speech, as well), but I would like to know that it IS an advertisement.
In the case of Soaring Australia, I also believe that blatantly
promotional articles should be paid for just like any other advertisement.

While many of us know who is who in the zoo, there will be those who
don't. Perhaps, if these people choose not to declare their interest,
another member of the list could out them :)

I don't think anyone doubts that the ASG29 is a good thing. It was
only suggested that those same pilots would probably have done equally
well in other equipment.

Cheers

Tim (written by Tim Shirley for the LS1D owners association of
australia. Vote 1 LS1D)

In the interests of free speech, I do not believe that this group should
have a moderator.

However, I think it would be appropriate for those with a vested interest in
a particular product to make that interest clear when posting on this list
(and when writing articles in Soaring Australia) especially when they are
praising or promoting the products they sell.

I have no objection to this list being used to advertise (that is free
speech, as well), but I would like to know that it IS an advertisement. In
the case of Soaring Australia, I also believe that blatantly promotional
articles should be paid for just like any other advertisement.

While many of us know who is who in the zoo, there will be those who don't.
Perhaps, if these people choose not to declare their interest, another
member of the list could out them :)

I don't think anyone doubts that the ASG29 is a good thing. It was only
suggested that those same pilots would probably have done equally well in
other equipment.

Cheers

Re: [Aus-soaring] NSW State Comps

2007-11-21 Thread nandrews
Further Lukes comments which I understood the same as Nick did, there are
quite a few hopeful new gliders flying in various comps and have done well
but are largely let down by not having top ranking pilots fly them. The LS10
did extremely well at the pre worlds which by the way was won by a Ventus,
had Michael somer been flying the 10 it may well have won. The NSW comps
reflected this, 3 of the top pilots in Oz but had John Buchanan not stuffed
his final glide on one of the days landing 13km's short the results could
well have been different.

John also won the club class nationals - in a Ventus.

I don't think it really matters if Holden or Ford win, if the Ford proves to
be better then the Holden will get a better handicap - should even things
up, that's what they are there for.

Pretty disgusting results overall for 18 metre gliders, so called high tech
advances which just puts them out of reach of common man but really they
haven't progressed that much better than the first 18 metre gliders that
rolled out in the mid 90's - when are we going to see meaningful leaps in LD
that would just make you want to rush out and buy a new one?

Taking pills now

Cheers

I agree that advertorials should certainly be identified as such.

I also accept that those same pilots would probably have done equally well in
other equipment is possibly correct and reasonable.

But for the representative of a competing brand to say that those same 3
placegetters would have flown a brick to 1st place is ridiculous and partisan.

And similarly for someone else to state that the only reason the ASG29's won
was that the rest of the field were blaniks is denigrating to the place
getters, the ASG29 and the other competitors.

I can understand why some of the Ventus owners are getting a but towy, though.

Well said Tim

With the email list it is much easier to see any replies, however when it comes
to Soaring Australia you are trusting what you read. A few times I have
stopped half way through an article to see who wrote it, just because it doesnt
quite read right. It must be very frustrating for those who have paid for a
back cover spread to read what is basically free advertising within the pages

association with a particular manufacturer should be mentioned at the end of
the article.

Re: [Aus-soaring] NSW State Comps+airspace+cloudflying

2007-11-21 Thread Tim Shirley
Macca,

Current Nationals Rules (which in this area are consistent with World
Comps) specify an outlanding at the point of the offence for the first
airspace violation, zero for the day on the second offence, and
disqualification from the event for the third. Both the Queensland and
NSW rules appear to be based on earlier incarnations of Nationals Rules
if what you say is correct.

An outlanding before the start is effectively zero for the day of course.

Cheers

On another strange one Queensland comps have zero points if you go

Also we observed one person doing serious cloud flying (like 2 mins in

who it was but i am afraid it should be looked into as we have the

another aircraft was allowed to fly over weight and was given no
penality. He called it another form of cheating.

Hello Luke

I feel that you are not only unfair to me but also to the three pilots

Before I acknowledged the pilots (and promptly congratulated them on

Therefore, any sarcastic comments (such as the one in the first line of
your

Your second line is an insult to other competing top pilots. Butch, for
example,
competed in the same comp but placed fourth with a gap of around 10% to
the winner and approx. 6% to third place.

Sorry, you posting was so outrageous that I could not help myself but

Hi Simon

I can see that you are trying to spice up this newsgroup. Good try - good on
you!!!

In all seriousness, Simon, having three ASG 29 in the comp and having all
three pilots

on the podium is by no means an isolated case. It has happened at various
Nationals

in Europe and America and is one of many reasons why the ASG 29 is widely
regarded

as the top ship in 18m class these days.

Especially in countries like Australia its spectacular performance in high
speed cruise

makes the glider attractive. Not even the very best of today's open class
ships can stay

with it and it doesn't seem to matter whether the aircraft has developed
spar bumps or

not.

But don't take my word for it and talk to Butch. He has just placed his
second order

for an ASG 29(E) - number sixteen (16) in my sales territory.

On another matter, are you coming to the Waikerie coaching week in January?

Your confirmation would be appreciated!

Kind regards

Haha, I was waiting or this reply! I knew the speeds and what glider did it at
the time, just didn't want to admit that it was a G29! And thought a 'good
bite' would be worth it :).

I agree with Nigel, if it is 'that much better', even with the spar bumps -
then I would be okay with a 1-2% handicap been put on the G29...

Hope your having a good season all, sounds like there has been some tremendous
weather around in the past 2weeks - lets hope it rains every Mon-Thursday
mornings, then booms every weekend for us glider pilots!

Not even the very best of today's open
class ships can stay
with it and it doesn't seem to matter whether the aircraft has developed
spar bumps or
not.
But don't take my word for it and talk to Butch. He has just placed his
second order
for an ASG 29(E) - number sixteen (16) in my sales territory.

On another matter, are you coming to the Waikerie coaching week in
January?
Your confirmation would be appreciated!

Kind regards

Hi Adam

I would have expected you to come up with a much better excuse for
misleading the members of this newsgroup! You can't fool us!!! You
passed on gossip without checking - not good enough for a professional
pilot.

With all due respect, Adam, this is not the first time you have spread

It is not doing your credibility any good, mate!!!

Haha, I was waiting or this reply! I knew the speeds and what glider
did it at the time, just didn't want to admit that it was a G29! And
thought a 'good bite' would be worth it :).

I agree with Nigel, if it is 'that much better', even with the spar
bumps - then I would be okay with a 1-2% handicap been put on the G29...

Hope your having a good season all, sounds like there has been some
tremendous weather around in the past 2weeks - lets hope it rains every
Mon-Thursday mornings, then booms every weekend for us glider pilots!

2007-11-20 Thread Luke Dodd
exactly my point Nick. I struggle to see the how the point was
missed-misinterrepret by others.

luke

I think Luke was responding to Bernard's second post which is congratulatory of
the aircraft, not the pilots. From what I read, Luke was making the point that
the 3 pilots in question would have placed regardless of their choice of modern
18m glider.

Nick.

under control.

Bernard's post congratulated the 3 pilots involved, so what is Luke's line
1 all about?

Why is it so hard to accept that the ASG29 just might be a pretty good
thing?

Gliding is a top secret sport the last thing we would want to do is promote
it to its existing members let alone release the information to the public.

But don't worry about checking the results as they have not been entered onto

RE: RE: [Aus-soaring] NSW State Comps ~ all classes, same task, same start time?

2005-02-25 Thread Alan Wilson
Mike,

While the speed may be beaten, we all know the only valid comparison is
when all classes of gliders do the same task on the same day, with the
same start time, etc...

Obviously AAT are different as gliders can choose their turn point and
follow the weather better, and at times the time on task is also
relevant.

Anyway, Temora was fun, and FFX was even better.

Hi

I
guess there is no title for coming last but that doesnt alter the fact that

Schleicher
pilots won three out of four titles at the recent NSW State comps

at
Temora.

And
while I have your attention let me add that in some cases the margins

were
quite considerable. The new ASW 28-18E, for example, finished almost

10%
ahead, despite of the fact that it was flown by a relatively unexperienced

competition
pilot who flew the aircraft for the very first time.

To
put these results into context, the new ASW 28-18E is an unflapped glider

but
it still beat a fleet of predominantly flapped gliders including a number of

Ventus
2cx.

No
wonder people are already queuing for the ASG 29.

2003-11-04 Thread RF Developments Pty Ltd
Harry, the QLD state comps site had the entrants listed, no one
complained, and it was useful, others could see who was going and it may
have contributed to some coming out of the wood work just to see old
friends.

Cheers

Nigel

P.S It looks like the Qld boys will probably take all the trophies
anyway with about 10 or more attending so I hope you roaches have plenty
of beer!

Derek,

We have not published a list of confirmed entries. Most comps do not do
it as there is very often a pretty poor showing until the last moment.
We have
+20 in multi class and +10 in club class. This will be the first time we
have had a state club class for some time. If you personally want to
know entrants names, then I could ask permission but would be reluctant
to put it on a public document unless individual pilots ok'd it. It
might be seen as an invasion of their privacy,

Regards,

Harry

 Attention All,

Confirmed entries for the NSW State Comps at Lake Keepit now stand at
 over
30. If you are contemplating attending and have not entered please let
us know. We are not chasing your money, but there is a lot of planning
involved particularly, - How many tugs do we organise? We will be
doing our very best to make the comps run smoothly and knowing firm
numbers is a great help. Please contact us if you might be coming and
have not completed your entry yet,

 Thanks,

Re: [Aus-soaring] NSW State Comps

2003-11-04 Thread Harry Medlicott
Nigel,

Our web page has entries listed, but they are a bit behind.

We would be glad if you take a few prizes home. It would only make up for
all the ones NSW pilots have carried back from Q'land over the years!

With on-field catering thanks to Wendy and a band of helpers plus a cool
room with plenty of capacity we are looking forward to a fantastic week.
Conditions down here have been quite good lately with some days going to
11000 ft. As this is usually a dry time of year there is an excellent chance
of it continuing. Storms are usually not common until well into December,

Best Wishes to Michelle,

Harry

[aus-soaring] NSW State Comps at Lake Keepit

2003-10-15 Thread Harry Medlicott

IMPORTANT
NOTICE

Entry fees for these comps, to be held at
Lake Keepit between 15th and 22nd November have been set at $205 with an early
bird $20 discount if paid early( in mail before end of this week). In an effort
to keep costs to pilots as low as possible we have been negotiating with the
NSWGA to be credited with a sport and recreation grant which will be used to
reduce entry fees. We don't know by how much yet but hope it will be quite
significant.

This note is to notify anyone who has paid
the original entry fee that they will have a refund of the
difference.

Plans for the competition are well in hand
and we are expecting a large entry. We are planning on having an unballasted
sports class using the handicaps which have worked well in National Sports
Class. Due to the Sports Class Nationals being in S.A. we are
expectingthis class to be well attended. Multi Class will include
Standard, 15 metre, 18 metre and Open. Multi class will be ballasted up to the
maximum approved but handicapping will not apply. Classes will be amalgamated to
make up numbers when required e.g. If there are insufficient 15m. gliders
to make a class, then standard class would fly both standard and 15m. class to
create a15m. class.

We will be having different start points and
first direction for sports and multi classas a safety
feature.

Asweather man for the comps I am
predicting and almost guaranteeing excellent weather - not too difficult as
November is usally one of our best months. Summer storms do not usually start
until mid December and we often get cloud bases of up to 10,000 feet. Day length
is only slightly shorter than the summer maximum and we are allowing pilots to
declare a lay day on the day if conditions look good for a personal best or
record flight.

Due to Telstra problems our web page is
temporarily down but further details and entry forms can be obtained from our
President, Steve Hedley at[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Looking forward to seeing you
soon,

Harry Medlicott
