[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2019-03-28 Thread leonor . bertoni
I seem to remember someone asking about last names on FTM and some
instructions being given. I have, accidentally, found some other usual
information that I do not think was included at the time. If this is all
stuff that is already well know, I apologize.

It was mentioned before that you need to put backslashes around the last
name on names that have da, do, de so that it uses only the name after the
da, do, de as the last name Joao da Costa, I would enter Joao da /Costa/.
You can also put it at the end of the name to show that there isn't a last
name, for example; Maria de Jesus, I enter Maria de Jesus // this keeps the
whole thing as a first name. This saves me from going back and editing all
the "de something" names.
It does not matter where the name is, if you put the backslashes around it,
it automatically becomes a last name, this is useful if there is a known
"apelido". For example; Joao Soares Manteiga, I know that Manteiga was an
apelido but sometimes it is used as a last name by some of his relatives. I
enter it as Joao /Soares/ Manteiga. This will sort the name by Soares not
by Manteiga, but Manteiga will still show.
I have had a situation where I uploaded my FTM tree to Ancestry and all my
ancestors come up as "living" because there isn't a "deceased" option on
FTM. I now just enter "unknown" in the death field. This marks them all
deceased on Ancestry.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2018-05-17 Thread luiznoia
I've been using the FTM 2005 version since it's release. I recently bought
the 2017 .

Not a Fan. A waste of $79. Very difficult to navigate and I feel poorly
designed.

The only improvement was the ability to create a PDF that was lacking in
the 2005.

I don't want to link every tree I have to Ancestry, so they can throw a
thousand useless "hints" at me.

I'm back to using 2005 for my daily work.

I have Family Tree Maker, and I have not had any problems. One of the best
features of the Software MacKiev version is that it is possible to link more
than one family tree to Ancestry. The color coding is also a useful.

Liz,
As far as I remember, some had problems and some didn't.

As for a recommendation, you will have to get what you like and what
appeals to you. I could tell you about this great restaurant by my house,
but my neighbor may tell you it was lousy.

You didn't say what FTM version you had. Kathy Cardoza evaluated one of the
versions. It's in the archive. She probably labeled it pretty clearly, so
if you search for "Family Tree Maker" and see the post was by Kathy
Cardoza, that's the one you want.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family tree maker upgrade

2017-04-26 Thread John Athayde
They’ve been working with Ancestry to work out some of the kinks in the new
FamilySync. I’ve been using it without issue for the last few beta versions.
They said they were having some issues with very large trees still, but
otherwise it’s been pretty smooth for me. Syncing is incredibly fast now.

If you decide to try it, just create a full backup of your FTM files first.

I’m using this on macOS, so I can’t speak to it’s stability or issues on
Windows. I would assume it would be roughly the same, however.

Cheers,
John Athayde

2016-10-31 Thread Cheri Mello
Actually, as computers evolved from 32bit to 64 bit the industry had to
create programs for the 64 bit. It's the evolving technology. For awhile
there, a way existed to trick the 64 bit into pretending it was a 32 bit. I
can't remember the particulars. It was in a computer class that I took some
years ago. I'm sure that's what the Geek Squad did for you.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - Need Info on New Program

2016-10-31 Thread 'Ralph Sellars' via Azores Genealogy
To clarify my post below I will point out I am not computer literate.  For that
reason I maintain an annual subscription to Best Buy's "Geek Squad"
professional computer service.
I believe they were able to convert my 32 bit FTM version 2006 (that's  the
version that my opening page of my current FTM program still shows)  to run on
a 64 bit computer.
My under standing is that Ancestry purchased the rights to FTM about Version
2006.   During their early ownership they maintained and created changes to the
program up to about version 8 or 9.  Being uncomfortable with some of the
changes, I stopped upgrading at Version 2006 and went back to my backup 2006
version.
My understanding is that Ancestry then developed a completely new and different
genealogy program (app?).  At some point they developed a conversion program
for FTM 32 bit to FTM  64 bit.
When my old computer died, Ancestry had already moved ahead to either Version
11 or 12. and were no longer supporting FTM 32 OR the conversion program.  In
working with Ancestry my Geek Squad   agent was able to establish that if I was
willing to pay for the upgrades of my Version 2006 to Ancestry's Version
(?)2009 they could convert my Version 2006 (now actually 2009)  to run on a 64
bit computer.
So I am now running with some of Ancestry's upgrades that I originally tried to
avoid but its a small price to pay as I still essentially have the old
Broderbund program.

Elaine:
Welcome to the Club !
I dropped FTM "Ancestry" when Ancestry started making complicated changes to
it.   One example: recording of sources !
I bought and have the full Roots Magic version 7  and Legacy 8.0 version's and
found them both far more complex and difficult to load.  I found these are both
good and worth while products and have helpful staffing but having FTM I find
they are more complex than I need.
So to make a long story short after a lot of blood. sweat, and tears, and my
Geek Squad help,  I have reverted back to my FTM version 2006.   It still works
fine,  full fills my every need, is simple, self intuitive, so I intend to keep
it as long as it works.
My distress was created when my 32 bit computer died and I had to buy a new
one.  At that point in time all new computers were 64 bit.  My FTM would not
run on 64 bit so I had to upgrade FTM to 64.  When Ancestry purchased FTM they
developed a conversion program.  When my computer died they had developed their
own new version FTM and no longer supported the original FTM they purchased or
the conversion program.  Fortunately, my local Geek Squad were able to find a
way they had made the conversion in the past and were able to upgrade my copy
of FTM to 64 bit.
I have been using it since about 1990 .
In 2004 I used it to publish a158 page Genealogical History of my Sellars
Family Titled  "NEWFOUNDLAND SELLARS  Facts and/or Hearsay" using Family Tree
Maker V10.  This version of FTM not only  developed the individual reports and
charts it created an all name index and identified every page the individual
was noted on, it collated the reports and numbered the pages consecutively
starting with the table of contents through the dedication, preface,
acknowledgements, introduction and all the various reports and charts I elected
to use.  What more do I need ?  Nothing.  It is a GREAT PROGRAM ! (?App.?)
Copies have been distributed to many public entities, including public
libraries, historical societies, and town halls, which have been helpful to me
in collection of data. It is now out of print.
I would hope that some entity would take an interest in that original
Broderbund program and maintaining the original self intuitive program concepts
windows, etc., make and maintain the program to do things like making FTM run
on a 64 bit program rather than earlier 32 bit  or 16 bit program  or earlier.
I have heard that some company may have purchased from Ancestry the rights to
FTM ?   Which FTM ?
If any one on the list knows who the company is,  or what the current status is
I would hope they could share that information with those of  us who are caught
in this difficult position.
Good luck in your search.

Hi Sam,

Even though they don't have an official release date, if your program is having
problems you can let them know and they will advise you on what to do. When
they got back to me, they said my program needed to be updated and sent me the
instructions. Because I was using Mac 3, I qualified for the free upgrade.
There are options to run it on 3 family computers for a cost. I use it on one,
so I have no experience with the family share.  Very happy so far.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - NeedInfo on New Program

2016-10-27 Thread 'Denise' via Azores Genealogy

Denise/Elaine; I just signed up with MacKiev and received an email that
contained the following information:

FAMILY TREE MAKER
New FTM 2014.1 and Mac 3.1
How to get the updated editions
What you will get and when depends on what FTM version you currently have:
1. Users of FTM 2014 and Mac 3: Hang in there! FREE updates are coming. We
don’t have a fixed date yet, but are working hard to make sure that they are
everything you would want them to be. We will send you an email to let you know
as soon as they are available.
2. Users of older FTM editions: No matter how old your copy of FTM is, or
whether it’s running on Windows or Mac, you can download an upgrade for $29.95
(vs. $69.95 regular price). Click here to take advantage of this limited-time
upgrade offer today.
3. New users: If you have never owned a copy of Family Tree Maker before, you
can download a full edition from our online store for $69.95 by clicking here.
You will then be able to get free updates and discounted upgrades going
forward.
 Additional Offers:

Family Tree Maker users who do not currently have an Ancestry.com subscription,
will be offered a 14-day free trial.
If you would like a backup disc, you can purchase a CD in a jewel case for an
extra $10 (plus $5.95 for shipping and handling).

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - NeedInfo on New Program

2016-10-27 Thread 'Denise' via Azores Genealogy
They were very quick to respond and I had these issues for so ling and now it's
working well again and I am so happy. I have a very large tree that kept
freezing and also when I typed in location names I would get the hourglass and
it would take so long. All is good now and I'm very happy so far.

I think you will find your issues resolved or can report it and they can look
into it.

Good luck!!

Denise,

Thank you. While playing around I did see something about free and three
computers (I have FTM on 2) and will look into it further when they reply to my
question about my current FTM 16 (2006) that will not keep my Edit/Notes as I
really, really, really use this function and I hope their new program will

Hi Elaine,

The upgrade to MacKiev is free for existing customers. Go to their website and
click around for what you need. http://www.mackiev.com/

What I did was explain the issues I was having and my email was answered within
1 day. They provided me with the information I needed to download the upgrade
file. It took about 5 minutes to do. I like the FTM software and I am so glad
that they took over and addressed issues. The problems I was having are gone
with the upgrade.

Good luck!

I am still having the 32/64 bit problem and have been living with it for over a
year. On my FTM 16, I can no long post Edit-Notes and I use this a lot
referencing where I found a record. I put the notes in but they erase as soon
as I leave the note. I asked FTM for help but nothing there. I wonder if I
will still have this problem when I update to MacKiev and plan to ask them
about it before I purchase it. I would like to stay with this program as I do
not like learning new things anymore. On my older computer, I do not have this
problem but it is so slow!!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - Need Info on New Program

2016-10-27 Thread Cheri Mello
Ralph,
As Denise posted, it's MacKiev who now publishes or owns Family Tree Maker.
They plan on keeping it current, which would be Windows 10, 64 bit. And the
same would be for the Mac version with their current Mac OS.

I'm not a computer programmer, but as technology improves, the programs
need to change with them. No company is going to spend the time in
developing a program to work on a 16 bit computer. I can't remember, but
that may be DOS days, without any type of Graphic User Interface (GUI).
It's like cars today. Many don't even need you to put a key in the
ignition. You just need that key fob with you and you push a button to
start the car. Should these car manufacturers have an ignition key as well?
And if they have the keyless with a push button and an key for the ignition
to start the car, why not include that crank to start the car (from the
1920s or something)? And and and and. Lots of technologies have changed
over time: the telephone, stoves/ovens/microwaves, washing machines, lots
of things. I don't know a single person who prefers to wash their clothes
on a wash board. I never hear anyone lamenting about wanting the old
telephone exchanges back. "Hello, operator, give me Thorndale-4567." Yeah,
it's annoying when a change comes in and time needs to be spent in learning
something new. We don't always like change and we grumble about it, but
it's technology and it will continue to evolve.

My genealogy program is "The Master Genealogist" (TMG). It is no longer
published. Is it on this new computer? Yes, I was able to load it and get
it to work *most* of the time (sometimes it doesn't load correctly into
Windows 10). Am I going to be using it in 5 years? Probably not, but I'd
like to. I know that there's some people in Australia working on making a
new one but they are a couple of years away. However, I have both Legacy
and RootsMagic on my computer and I periodically play around with them too.
The day TMG quits working I'll need to have a plan ready to go. And yes, I
have a preference of one over the other. It's my preference though. People
just need to pick the genealogy program that suits them best. That is the
best genealogy program for them.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - Need Info on New Program

2016-10-27 Thread 'Ralph Sellars' via Azores Genealogy

 FTM support is supposed
to end the end of the year.  I have FTM 16.  Has anyone
changed to a different program or the new company who is
supposed to take over FTM users? Any other program to make
an easy switch?  I am looking for an easy switch and how to
do it and what I will and/or will not lose. Remember, I am

I started with PAF. When they stopped supporting it I used the Essential
Version of Roots Magic. I have since bought the software and have *NEVER*
had an issue. Roots Magic also has a FaceBook page with plenty of people
ready and willing to assist you if you should any questions and they let
you know about any updates.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM16 support ending - Need Info on New Program

2016-10-27 Thread Theresa Entin
Hello, to all of the people who are using Family Tree Maker, I have used it
for many years and just recently learned of something in the program that
usually fixes any of the glitches it has. Also, on Facebook they have a Family
Tree Maker page that gives advice and also updates to it.

This is the thing that you should do often with the FTM program. Under the
TOOLS pull down menu, there is a COMPACT FILE. You should compact the file if
the program crashes, or if you are having issues with uploading it to Ancestry.
Or just as a good thing to do.

When you compact the file, it will give you a % of space it compacted. It
should compact to 0.0%. You may have to compact the file a couple of times.
Even though I compact all the time now, I usually have to do it 2 times before
I get it 0.0%.

If you use Facebook, it is a good page to join because the programers from
MacKiev monitor it and answer very quickly if you have an issue.

Celeste and others,

I contacted MacKiev and filled in a form and it looks like I can upgrade
from FTM 16 to their new version for $29.95. JR thanks for reminding me
to backup my files, maybe twice, before I do anything else.

Will let you know how it goes.

You can try Roots Magic 7. It's free for the Essential Version. It's not
what you are used to, but it is easy to use and will import FTW files
without errors. That's important and better than importing a Gedcom file.
Legacy is also easy to use. Just be sure back up your files unto a flash
drive or CD or both!

OK, here's the announcement about Family Tree Maker (FTM - it's genealogy
software for your computer):
http://goo.gl/AA7Ln4
And here's background on MacKiev: http://goo.gl/EVBXrB

Dick Eastman is probably at RootsTech in Salt Lake right now. If not, I
know a couple of list members are there.

I guess we will see how this all unfolds by the end of the year. It sounds
like both FTM and RootsMagic will sync with Ancestry. I guess folks will
have to play wait and see.

Don’t want to rain on your parade, but MacKiev is NOT a genealogy company. They
have other software but I don’t believe any of it is genealogy related. I would
be very wary of that situation. Those folks are probably not genealogists who
have done research and can be supportive in that regard. RootsMagic is a
program I’ve used, both Mac and PC. It is not my favorite, but if the Ancestry
connection is important to you, then you may be happy with either of these two
choices. Food for thought.

Another thought about a software program. Many of the current programs like
Ancestral Quest and Roots Magic have simplified version online that are
free to download. These free downloads do not have all the bells and
whistles the full programs have, but they should let you merge two GEDCOMS.

You should be able to go through and eliminate the duplicates.

Just an idea

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2016-01-23 Thread Cheri Mello
Family Tree Maker is no longer being made. Support will continue through
December 31st of this year, however.

I'd make a Gedcom of your tree from Ancestry and send it to mom. Mom should
also download a Gedcom of her tree. Then she should start a new file,
family, project (whatever it is called in FTM) and merge the 2 Gedcoms
together and then begin the clean up process (you guys probably did data
entry differently). After you have it the way you like it, upload it to
Ancestry in place of one of the trees and eliminate the other tree.

You mom can make a Gedcom of the merged tree and send it to you. If you
want to open it or view it though, you will need a genealogy software
program to do that. If you are mom's backup copy, then you are fine.

Gedcom directions (both uploading and downloading) are here:

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2016-01-23 Thread Adair Borba
Hi All,

I would appreciate some advice on a strong project of which I need help.

My Mother and I have separate trees on Ancestry. It is time to combine the
trees, and I understand from Ancestry that this can be done by Family Tree
Maker. My Mother has it installed on her desktop, but I do not, and I do not
have the software.

This means the merge will have to take place on her computer, however the ideal
objective is to have the merged tree on my computer.

I feel we should hire an expert to facilitate the merge, thereby eliminating
the cost of maintaining the 2 trees.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Adair Borba

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker FTM 16 Problem

2014-11-05 Thread 'Bill Boyd' via Azores Genealogy
"E",
The compatibility mode should be used for installation.  The setup files (if on
CD) will need to be copied to your hard drive before you can change the
properties as instructed below.  You might also select to run as administrator
(another checkbox) just to make sure things go smoothly (fewer prompts for
permission).
Run the installation program in compatibility mode:1. Right-click the
installation file's icon.2. Click Properties > Compatibility .3. Select the
compatibility mode for Windows XP.4. Click OK .5. Run the installation program.
After it's installed, run the program in Windows XP compatibility mode by doing
the same with the installed program (right-click on the shortcut for FTM).
Hopefully you've already solved this.

 I'm not sure about FTM.

I take the other file and import it as it's own file/family/project.
After making sure the data entry is the same as mine, I save it again.
Then I go to File >Import and it asks if I want to merge that file with my
 own.

Somewhat over simplistic. You can make a file/family/project with one
obvious person (Bugs Bunny) and try a merge with him. That way, you only
have to delete one "person" if you don't do the import right.

Pam S,

I'm not sure about FTM.

I take the other file and import it as it's own file/family/project. After
making sure the data entry is the same as mine, I save it again. Then I go
to File >Import and it asks if I want to merge that file with my own.

Somewhat over simplistic. You can make a file/family/project with one
obvious person (Bugs Bunny) and try a merge with him. That way, you only
have to delete one "person" if you don't do the import right.

Great find!  Yes, if the record has an image associated with it, then story
view can allow viewing of the image.  The index data, however, is not visible.
Still, it is something.

Hi Bill,

Yes, this is what annoys me about the "Great Paywall of Ancestry.com".
There was recent discussion here in the group about a public
library-sponsored research that's going into Ancestry.com, and nobody
flinched at the fact that all this content will be "offered" to them for
resale to other members.

I'm not and will probably never will be their client. A word to all of you
that are. Try using mundia.com. You may find that a lot of what you're
paying for to access other's research is actually available for free.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2014-01-20 Thread Bill Boyd
Pam,

Yes, it comes and goes.  For a time, recently, I could view my ancestry sourced
records.  I thought, "wow, they are finally getting a clue!".  Then, about two
weeks ago, it stopped working again.  They are very inconsistent.  If I pay to
access records, they should remain open to me through their interface.

The one that really gets me is that they charge for access to member posted
content.  I recently found the probate records for my great great grandfather
(he died intestate).  This has been key since we have no other records
indicating his death.  The final settlement includes all living children and
the children of those that had already passed (if they had heirs).  A real boon
for researchers!  In any case, the records came from FamilySearch and were
free.  They were NOT indexed and it took me a while of cross referencing to
find them (I'm still missing one inventory, but that's another story).  So, I
post this to Ancestry.com.  Anybody who wants to add these records MUST be a
paying subscriber.  In effect, Ancestry is reselling my work.  My results will
show up in searches for "William Hardin Hickman", but they must pay to see my
translation and attach the record.  This really burns me!  Not only do I not
get access to other records, but I
must pay to collaborate with other researchers on Ancestry.  Makes me mad
enough to take my tree private!  I really need to find an easy way to post my
full tree, with records, for public consumption.

Sorry, I get a bit hot about Ancestry.com even though I'm a user.

Bill

* This is a big one! If you don't have a subscription with Ancestry, they
will not let you view records you have ALREADY attached. This bugs me to no

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2014-01-20 Thread Bill Boyd
I use both Ancestry and Family Tree Maker. Cheri is correct for the overall,
but there are some things to be aware of:

* The sync doesn't get everything on ancestry. For example, all of the data
associated with documents and headstones does not come down to FTM. If I have
text in the translation field on ancestry, it never appears in FTM.

* Things change more frequently in the cloud (Ancestry). They are very
regularly trying new things. Some things disappear completely. For example, I
spent a lot of time tagging faces in pictures only to have the feature, and
data, disappear. Better to just describe in notes.

* They are constantly breaking the sync feature. This generally corrupts the
FTM file. I don't mind as much since my "master" is always the cloud copy.

* As Cheri states, I like "owning" the data. Should Ancestry disappear or
crash, I can continue (with diminished data). Also, I periodically let my
subscription expire and turn to free services. It forces me to look elsewhere
for a time. I find newspapers and browsing images on familysearch very
worthwhile.

* This is a big one! If you don't have a subscription with Ancestry, they will
not let you view records you have ALREADY attached. This bugs me to no end!
They will, however, continue to sell your pictures and records to only
subscribers. So, the sync with FTM gives you access to your Ancestry records
when not subscribed.

* Try the different Ancestry access points (web, iPhone, Android) every now and
then. They often screw up security on upgrades and provide free record access
for a time. Also, the iPhone (right now) allows individual record purchases
for $1.99. Not cheap, butter better than paying for a month for 1 or 2 records.

* Some records are FREE no matter you subscription status. No, Ancestry does
not make it obvious which records! Anything from the 1940 census, find a
grave, billion graves, and many others, are always free. You'll have to develop
a list. If you select a premium record, just back up from the prompt to
subscribe.

Good luck!

On Ancestry, you can keep your genealogy in the cloud, on their servers.
With Family Tree Maker, you will have your own genealogy software on your
computer (back it up yourself). It has a lot more bells and whistles than

Pam,

I have upgraded. The big difference is a tree view like the online ancestry.com
site. I was hoping the improved tree sync would now also get more detailed
media information. Unfortunately, it does not. Document transcripts, for
example, do not come down to FTM.

Quite honestly, I'm not convinced it is worthwhile. Perhaps I'll find
something, but after a week I'm not sure. Is there something you really want in

[AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker

2013-01-05 Thread want2beunique
Not specific to the Azores, but a handy tip I recently came across for
those using Family Tree Maker and synchronizing with Ancestry.com. I
mainly use it to have a copy of my ancestry.com tree, sources and media on
a local system where I control the data. Yes, I'm afraid of "clouds" ;-)

To ensure all of your media is downloaded to Family Tree Maker, go to the
"Media" section by selecting it in the ribbon bar. Then hit
(the "<" and ">" indicate that these are two keys and not "ctrlf5" typed as
individual letters/numbers). You will be prompted to download all media
from your ancestry.com synchronized tree or only search for anything that
is missing. I would do it all first and then the delta option later. It
pulled down a lot of media for me!

Pam,

I just realized that I'm using FTM 2012, not FTM 2011. Maybe that's why my
instructions aren't working for you. Suggestion: Download the Companion
Guide for your version, offered free as a pdf document. You can find the
link under the Help menu.

Good luck,

Pam, I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do, but you can customize
the boxes for all females by clicking the word "females" (under boxes in
the Box, Border and Line Options window) and then selecting a border color
and then a fill and shadow color, if desired. The default for all three of
these is "None." Then go down a line, click on "males," and make
additional selections. There are other options, as well.

think the "box and line styles" settings under "Pedigree Chart Options"
might be the place to specify borders and colors for boxes for females and
males. This would be on your screen to the right of the actual chart, and
it allows you to customize the appearance of the boxes. After you enter
your preferences for females, go down and do the same for males. You can
have females with red borders and males with blue borders, etc. This just
controls the appearance; all ancestors, male and female, will appear in the
tree. I don't know how to make it print just male or female.

 Hope this helps a little.

called the new file by same name No. 2 So now I have 2 FTW family files the
old one without the updated info and the new one with all the new info I
had input into my laptop and they are both now on my mini. I know this
occupies a lot of space to have 2 and am considering the deleting first one
and keeping the 2nd but am a little hesitant to do so. I cannot figure out
what they mean that there is a "file open" on the first one when we tried
to open and replace (1) instead of open and copy (2). Hope you understand
all of this.

Second, I did my grandson in law's genealogy before he married my
granddaughter in a FTW separate file. Now I would like to merge the two
files. I made sure his name and my granddaughter's name are exactly the
same in both files. How do I go about merging these two FTW files?

Thank you.

Maria,

I have to be careful with these tech words.
Update: Brings it up to date. Such as version 1.1 is now 1.2 (many times
these are free).
Upgrade: New version. 1.x is now 2.0 (usually you pay for them).

Rick answered the part about notifying you.

2011-09-28 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
Hi Maria,

I don't think this is a free upgrade. Family Tree Maker keeps milking this
money cow by adding these newer versions which to me are no real
improvements over the previous versions. I am sure they will send you an
email and offer the newer version at a reduced amount and tell you all about
it. The version I liked the best was the FTM 16. Since then all their
changes seemed to be pointed toward their on line site, services and sharing
which I do not care about.

Do u know if they update if you already have FTM? I have it but I also have
and use Legacy. However, I have wished my sons would also purchase Legacy
so they can see what I have entered and other fam members as well.

It looks like my personal info on FTM can be seen by others whom I
designate. I'm wondering if I should attempt exporting into it if they do
free update. I'll check on Internet. Good info- thanks.

FTM 2010 says this.  I looked in the Help file for Name then Settings.  See if
that's in your version.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Family Tree Maker for Mac --- my first impressions

2010-12-31 Thread Ralph Sellars
Family Tree Maker 2011 A second opinion

FIRST IMPRESSION

Having read Kathy Cardozas positive review of  Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy]
Family Tree Maker for Mac --- my first impressions- Friday, November 12, 2010,
1:13 PM and having been using 13 different Family Tree Maker version 1 to 2005
since 1992 with currently 18,946 individual records I decided to break down and
up date my 2005 version to the current version for windows.

A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT !

Don't be mislead by the title Family Tree Maker !

This new version is no longer the Family Tree Maker I know.   It is a
completely different software package.  I recognized none of the familiar
windows of my previous versions.

The old standard "Family View" is gone. In its place appears to be  a totally
different view containing some 6 (or more, depending on what you count as a
window) different windows crunched on to one screen.  Visualize, an index
window on the left side, a primary individual window on the right side, an
ancestor chart window at the center top, a children's list at the center
bottom, with two or three windows between the center top and bottom who's
function I have not yet figured out.  One says Henry & Joan (who I don't
recognize), another says "Add Parents" yet it shows the birth and death of the
primary individual shown in the right side window ? and a window titled
"Marriage" which appears to be a repeat that is in the primary individual
window!

The application that I received I do not consider an upgrade, or version of the
Family Tree Maker.   It is a completely new and different program that neither
looks even similar or works like or similar to the former Family Tree Maker.
It may well be a better program but it is misleading to say the least,  to
label it as what was once known  formally as the " #1-selling family history
software" .  It will take this individual a long and steep learning curve to be
able to use, let alone be comfortable with, this totally new rewritten and
different program.

For Christmas I received a 130 page history of the  "French Family 1555-1995"
by Eleanor M. Crouch.  After two days of attempting to record new information
in the new software application I have reverted back to my old 2005 version of
"Family Tree Maker"

So if you are considering buying or upgrading to Family Tree Maker by
Ancestry.com be aware it is very very different from the Family Tree Maker
programs published from about 1992 through 2005

I have used many genealogy programs over the years, both for Macs and for PCs
and own several for both platforms. Reunion (Mac) has generally been my program
of choice, though, as it is generally a very fine program, thorough, and easy
to work with. I am always intrigued by trying out new programs, looking for
that "perfect" one. To that end, I recently purchased FTM for the Mac and have
been working with it this last week. This is not a complete review, but is only
my first impressions of the program, both pro and con. I hope it will be
helpful to you if you are considering purchasing it.

First of all, there are two versions of this program . One, for $69 is sold
directly from Ancestry http://store.ancestry.com/ProductDetail.aspx?P=P-4845.
The other version sells for $99 but includes a Toolkit of 6 PDF books that may
or may not be helpful to you. It also includes a 6 month membership to the U.S.
collection on Ancestry. Before I purchased mine, I called Ancestry to find out
if I could apply that additional 6 months to my current Ancestry subscription
and was told Yes. I purchased my copy at Office Max, but it is also sold at
Best Buy, Office Depot, Amazon, and Apple stores. After I purchased and
registered it, I called Ancestry and they added 6 months to my subscription.
That, alone, is worth the additional $30, in my opinion!

I first prepared a gedcom in Reunion of my 9,000+ individuals and imported it
into FTM. That process went very smoothly and quick. As most everyone knows (or
should know) gedcom is NOT a perfect process, nor do you get perfect results.
This was no exception. (Also, because I store my genealogy files in Dropbox and
share them with both my computers, I changed the default place FTM wanted to
put my file, to my Dropbox.)

The program feels pretty Mac-like, in general. One thing I noticed right off,
though, was that, after the import, I clicked the button to View the Log.
and it opened up Parallels on my Mac to go into the Windows XP System that I
run on my Mac! OopsNot very Mac friendly there and bad first impression.  :)

Gedcom import:  Generally, most things were handled

Gedcom import: Generally, most things were handled very well in
the import. Notable exceptions were that many of my Misc. Event
tags in Reunion (gedcom tag was EVEN) did not survive the import.
Those included events such as Illness, Accident, Surgery, Register
to Vote, and Fraternal Society Joined events that I added
myself into Reunion and had given the EVEN gedcom tag. When I
realized this, I had to mark those individuals in Reunion and add
those Facts (as FTM calls them) into FTM one by one. I am still in
the process of doing this but am getting close to being finished
with it.

Notes: I use quite a few Notes in Reunion and have added my own
with the gedcom tag of NOTE; Census (where I record the entire
household for each census), Probate, and Military as well as the
default one for each individual of Misc. Notes. It seems that only
one Note was imported for each person so if they had a Military
note, for example, you will have to manually add that into FTM as
part of your Military Fact for that person.

Facts: FTM calls everything a Fact. There is a very large Note
field attached to each Fact. I do not know if there is a character
limit to this field as there is in Reunion (which is rather small).
It is a very large field for adding data so there is plenty of room
to add in your Note data from Reunion. When you publish a report
such as an Individual Person Report, these Fact Notes don't appear
immediately below the Fact data (date and place) but instead are
gathered at the end of the report. I didn't like that at first,
preferring to have ALL the pertinent data including the Memo/Note,
all together with the event data. But, after working with this for
a while, I see the merits of having that Note data appear at the
end of the report (before Sources, if you choose to include them).
You have an uncluttered view of all the Facts (Events) in a
person's life, shown as a concise list at the beginning of the
report. It makes it easy to view those events but if you want more
info on each one, you can refer to the end of the report where that
data appears.

Sources: FTM has a set of templates included for adding specific
source types. I haven't done a lot of these so far so I can't
really give you much feedback on it as of yet. At first glance,
though, it seems to be somewhat limited for templates. The Source
View, though, is very complete. You can click on one of your
sources on the left side and immediately see all the source
citation detail as well as the links (the people or event it is
being used on) and the media attached to it. Very nice! You can
