OKay , I'm going to tell everyone who doesn't already know WHAT scrapple actually IS. If you have a weak tummy , delete now :-). Scrapple is whatever is leftover from butchering a hog , ground up, cooked down with cornmeal into a kind of pudding-like consistency. After it has set , you can cut it in slices and fry it. I know this beacuse I've made it before (farm kid). It tastes wonderful , as long as you can ignore what's in it , LOL !!! And Rose ? The dogs love it !! Laurie Montoya (showing her age and her background) in S. Central PA Hi Pat, What on earth is scrapple? It sounds like you are eating dog treats!! Rose T.

Kidney problems
It is my understanding that kidney failure can be the result of multiple factors. Last year I had to euthanize my 13-month old male Berner due to severe kidney failure. His autopsy lab reports diagnosed the problem as glomerulonephritis. Glomerulonephritis can be a secondary result of another medical problem, or can be the primary problem (resulting from being genetically passed on). Bunker's lab report stated that his glomerulonephritis was probably the inherited kind that is passed on genetically in consideration of his young age. I don't know if your dog has this same condition, but it is something that you could ask your vet about/investigate. If you type in the word Glomerulonephritis under Search on the internet, you can find a lot of information on it. I also found someone that I spoke to at GDC to be helpful. If you would like to e-mail me privately, I would be happy to give you name of the contact at the GDC. Agility and Jumps
I have been taking agility lessons at an all breed club for the last 6 months. Abby is doing great, in fact, kicking the little white socks off the Australian Shepard! We're really having a blast! I would like to do some fun matches or perhaps try a competition. The only issue I see is that we routinely jump 16 or less in class. She was measured to jump at the highest setting (24 I believe). We're never jump at 20 yet either. I would love to hear what others do with their Berners. I'd like to compete, but I do not want to do any damage to bones or joints either. Thanks for the advice! Re: Dog Bath Tubs
Great idea Vilma, We put a dog tub in our new house in a corner of the basement. It's only hooked up to a drain as I ran a hose from the faucet on the sink next to the tub. I enclosed the tub by rigging up a rectangular curtain rod I made from PVC and suspended from the floor joists above. Two cheap plastic shower curtains surround the whole tub which is on a platform. I got the right height for the platform the same way that you did. And the tub? It was one that a friend had removed from their bathroom when they remodeled twenty years earlier. He retrieved it from the barn where it had been all that time. This elevated tub is the kindest thing that I've ever done for my back other than buying an air mattress to sleep on. Bigger and sturdier and about half the price of a dog tub. The builder asked me how high I wanted it, so I stood there and held my hands out straight in front of me and said my dogs are all about 26 inches tall, so 26 inches down from here! Works great. Re: Agility and Jumps
Trisha, How old is Abby? If she is developed enough (different people have different ideas about what age that my be and different dogs develop at different rates) than you can start moving the bar height up. I would also consider the surface that will be at the match or trial or whatever. Also consider Abby's jumping style. Does she come down hard or does she jump very smoothly? Jumping is much harder on the front than the rear, generally. Also think about your dog's conditioning. Does she just lie about or is she very active? I have been competing in agility for a while but have just started my Berner in trials. And he's jumping at the preferred height which is 20 until he's a bit older and I'm happier with his jumping style. That's a great option to have for the young dog, the old dog and the heavy, clumsy dog. I don't think that I'll ever run him on a hard, indoor surface at full height but hope to be able to go to 24 on grass. At this time I'm put him over a couple of 24 jumps a couple of times a week to help him learn to jump with a bit more clearance. I'm doing that through the snow, unfortunately. For additional conditioning I have been encouraging Boomer to chase my Aussie, Barney in order to get Boomer into shape. He really turned into a slug this winter as it's too cold for me to spend more than ten minutes outside (Reynaud's Syndrome). Since I started that training regimen, Boomer's been clearing the bars again. Conditioning is very important. It's also wise to cross-train. That means that you don't do the jumps, weaves, or A-frame every day. All of these are hard on out of condition muscles and even strain the well-conditioned dog. Re: show etiquette
Hi Rhona, The best thing to do is to always ask first if you can pet the dog. I never minded people petting Brina at the show. If she was going to win I would hope that it would be based more on structure and movement than on every hair being in the right place :-). Besides that it made showing more enjoyable for Brina. Most of the people showing at the benched shows know going in to it that people are going to want to pet their dogs and ask questions. So just ask, the most that can happen is that they say noand I bet you'll get a few go aheads also! Usually the people are a lot more relaxed and in a better social state of mind after their ring time. Before that it is a more stressfull time. Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion and I always went to the shows with the attitude that if I won, great, if I didn't it was good practice. That way I was never stressed(very nervous though :-) !!). - Original Message - From: Rhona Vantine [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, February 13, 2003 1:30 AM Subject: show etiquette I attended Crufts Dog Show last year and loved it! Someone mentioned recently that at a big show its probably not the best of times to bounce up to a handler and start asking questions.I desperately wanted to touch all those beautiful benched berners but wasnt sure if I should. The handlers all seemed to be grouped and chatting. I can count on one hand the amount of dog shows Ive been able to attend but at one in San Antonio, Texas I touched a Golden Retriever and the handler asked me to please not touch the dog. RE Adding Second Berner
We have 3 Berners right now -- this fall we took in those 2 older girls that Doug mentioned, but as some of you may recall, Canoe bloated and we lost her. Jenny (9 yrs and going strong!) has adjusted well and we are a big happy family - mom, dad, toddler, 3 dogs and 2 cats. Sometimes I wish that we only had one dog/cat because of the expense/time/training etc. involved in having multiples. But, I can't imagine going back to that. On bad days, I can curl up with 3 dogs and just rest between their warm bodies and relax. The pack dynamics are fascinating to watch. And, I have built-in distractions for my dogs to work with. I can work one dog on a Stay while Heeling with the other one. And I've found that our very shy, super-sensitive rescue, Shadow, benefits from being part of a larger canine group. When we had all 4 I could use pack dynamics to encourage him to venture out into parts of our property that were scary to him. He would go along, I guess because he figured that if the other dogs were okay with it, it was probably safe. Others have already listed pros and cons and helpful tips for adding dogs to the group. I would say that having added both rescues and a pup to the group that it is of the utmost importance to take temperament into consideration. All dogs go through adjustments when the group makeup changes, but these can be helped by knowing your dogs and choosing a suitable newcomer. Catherine Young Madison WI Shadow, Mickey Jenny

Re: Dogs call names
Lets start a thread on how your dog came to have its call name. We have seen many Dogs called Boomer and a number of dogs called Copper. Our first Stud dog was called Boomer and this name was derived from the fact that I was a Boom Operator on the Air Force KC 135 Flying Tanker. Our Cooper that our Granddaughter now has was called Copper due to the fact he is Copper colored Red Berner. Daisy, my 3 1/2 yr. old, got her name from the toy she carried home and would not put down except to eat -- it was a daisy. Buddy -- he came from a g litter and was genuinely gorgeous. Jack wants to learn drafting so Buddy became Genuine Draft (which is also Jack's favorite beer). Since I would NEVER call my dog Miller, we chose Buddy. Now, in truth, if I had known that Buddy's first few months would be filled with noxious gases, I would have named him Gone With The Wind. trust me. Maria
Re: Seizures and Berners
If anyone has any info on this or has had a berner that has gone thru this please let me know. Dear Stephanie, I am so sorry. I am going through the same thing with my almost 2 year old male that I rescued 6 months ago. We love him so much, and it is so hard. My boy had 4 seizures in one day, two weeks ago. The night before he had stolen 2 sticks of butter that were on the counter, softening so I could make cookies. Then... last week he had 3 seizures in one day. The afternoon before we had made homemade soft pretzels and he did have at least one. My gut feeling is that he reacted to salt, but not sure yet. With him, he had 4 seizures within 18 hours the first time and a week later 3 seizures in about a 12 hour period. My other Berner was fine with the same amount of pretzels, so maybe this boy is just reacting to the salt As I understand it...seizures are fairly uncommon in Berners. I'm taking my buddy to the vet on Tuesday. I'm sure he'll want to do blood tests, xrays, urinalysis, etc. But at least with him the seizures were so many, so close together that it makes me think it is something he ingested. And... since I was off of work and know exactly what he did and when, I'm thinking that salt is the culprit. It is so hard to watch, and so awful to be totally helpless. Please...make sure you keep a log of time, duration, what you can remember that might have lead up to it in the previous 24 hours, what she was doing when she had oneetc. Anything and everything you can think of. Then... if there is a pattern it will help the vet. There are so, so many things that can cause seizures. So... don't jump to the worst conclusions! I know it is hard, and I will be thinking of you. Please let me know what your vet thinks. :) Oh yeah might be a good idea just to notify the breeder. They may have some insight, and at the very least will want the information as they do future breedings. Thinking of you and Emm Barb down the Jersey shore __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: Dogs call names
What a fun subject Pat. Before Snowden arrived home I was searching for names on a baby name website that gave you the meanings origins of the names. I already had his registered name picked out Skylands Storm Front, since he was born on the night that I went to a Billy Joel concert in Philadelphia, Storm Front was the album for the concert tour. Snowden: from the snowy hillorman from the snow capped mountain. Came from the babyname website. I thought what a great name for a mountain dog. So the Snowy goes w/the storm front too! Since that's what we are having here in the Northeast as this BIG storm is finally here in PA. Looks like we are going to get 1-2 FEET of snow until it's all done Monday night...anyway. Sometimes people say He doesn't looked snowed-in Ha, Ha. He has lots of nicknames: Snowy, Snowman, Snowdrift, Snowhead, Snowfluff...they go on. Misha was one of the BARC rescues from the 2nd auction that came from Russia. So I wanted a russian sounding name I remembered the mascot from the 1980 winter olympic games that were in Russia. Misha was a really cute fuzzy bear that was the mascot that's the name that came to my mind when I saw the little bundle of berner fuzz. Her name that I gave her for the AKC ILP # is Misha BARC's Alot. She can be quite vocal I wanted to have the BARC name in there also. Re: Dog Call Names
We named Boomer that just because we thought that it was a good name for a big dog. Having been directed to find a registered name that sounded Indian related, we chose Thunder Dance (as in Thunder Boomers) hoping that he would live up to that name, dancing over the obstacles in agility. He's certainly lived up to his name when it comes to barking. His voice practically rattles the windows. Barney got his name because I needed encouragement when we got him, having just lost our first Berner while waiting for Boomer. So glad we got him as it was almost another year before Boomer came home with us. Barney is short for Barnabas which means encouragement. By the time we registered him, he had proven to be the class clown so his name is Don't Encourage Me. He teaches both Boomer and Mo a lot, both good and bad. What a clown! Mo is quite a story. She's living with us since my son couldn't take her when they moved. Her name from a pup was Moonshine which was quickly shortened to Mo. When it looked like she was to stay here for a time, I started treating her like one of my own, which meant agility training. She's proven to be a natural and her hurdling style is so smooth and she's so elegant that when we got her ILP her name became Flo Mo after the outstanding track and field star, Florence Joyner (Flo Jo). Can't wait to here some of everyone else's stories. Claudia Brydon in NW PA Barney OA NAJ (Aussie) Boomer (Bernese Mountain Dog) Mo (Gordon Setter Granddog)
Moses Improves
I just got off the telephone with Moses' doctor at Angell. He has picked up considerably. Temperature 101.3. Is eating. Chest Xrays appear normal but will be re-checked by a veterinary radiology specialist. Neurologist came in specially on a Sunday to check Moses and feels that Moses is neurologically intact. No fluid in Moses' lungs. Blood tests fine. Triple phosphate crystal in urine. Will be sent home on antibiotic and stronger arthritis medicine. Is ambulatory. Stiff in one elbow and right knee. Arthritic changes common to elderly dogs evident in lumbar vertebrae. Urinating well. Being given subcutaneous fluid. I shall be picking him up tomorrow before the snow starts. He is charming everyone at Angell Memorial. No apparent cancer spread. What a terrible scare; I am so weary. Thank God we can put this terrible episode behind us. I always love to hear how folks named their dogs, here is how it worked with some of my guys: Decker's registered name is Jamars Upper Deck CD, hubby has seasson ticket upper deck seats for the Lions games (perhaps a better call name would be 'loser') Keebler's registered name is Joslyns Made by Elves, he is a Std Schn, his parents are CH.'s with cropped ears, I have always called those elf ears, Keebler elves... you get the picture... my first Berner was Griffin, both call and registered name, well, registered was Griffin of Vines...Am,Can CD, CDX, TT, GDC, TV. I always bragged that he could say his name (gifff) and write it in the snow, as he always walked while he peed... Oscar the barc pup came with that name, kept it, figured he had been thru enough changes. Little did I know...his name has evolved from Oscar Doodle (the obedience trainer started that) to Doodle bug to just plain Bug. Re: Dogs call names
I started a list of potential dog names (both registered call names) when I was about 14 (this helps explain why I didn't date a lot as a teenager). Still have some good ones on there, waiting for the right dog! In my 30's, used to joke with my then-husband that when I turned 40 I was going to look like Christie Brinkley. Alas, something went awry and that didn't happen, but since my 40th birthday present to myself was a lovely puppy imported from Switzerland, she had to be called Brinkley (Ch. Zenith v Bernetta). Earlier dogs included Labrador Fenway (Polaris Green Monster CDX). Then-hubby, who was not a Red Sox fan, but was a Cardinal's fan, wanted the next dog named for his team. Wanted to call her Busch, after their stadium, but I refused. So Ch. DeerPark Double Play, CD, became Scarlet...not for the team's colors, but because the owner of the team had an illegitimate daughter named Scarlett. I was originally to have gotten a dog from a C litter, and her registered name would have been DeerPark Cardinal Sin. (It would have been so good!) Scarlet's son, Shiva, was named by the vet tech who spent 30 minutes reviving him after being born 7 days premature. She said Shiva was the Egyptian god of energy. Come to find out he was also a Hindu god of destruction. He was my lesson that they always live up to their names! Thus my next boy, who came along at a very difficult time in my life, was Better, as in life has to get better. Ch. Edelweiss Beacon v Polaris was my heart and soul until succumbing to histio on Dec. 4 at 9 1/2. He was definitely the best named dog I ever had. Joanne Prellberg Polaris Bernese Mtn. Blood donors...
Hi Judith, I personally have not used my dogs for blood donors, but have regularly used my 12+ lb cat for donating blood. My husband, Chris, is a vet tech also, but he works at our local ER vet and they go through quite a bit of blood. I do know that the US has a blood shortage for animal blood similar to the human blood donation shortage, so I'm sure that Cinderella's donation would be a godsend to a sick dog. She would be saving a life. Depending on how that clinic does it, they may or may not decide to lightly sedate Cinderella for the blood collecting. It's not a hard process but can take a few minutes, and typically dogs get wiggly before enough blood is obtained. Depending again on their procedures, they may shave a small amount of the hair on her neck also. It is a noble thing to do and I applaud you for considering it. (Also please feel free to forward this to the Berner-L. Aeryn -- CD !!!!!!!!!
A drumroll please -- I'm just so proud of my girl I think I'll bust my buttons. Today Aeryn, that baddest of bad, brattiest of brats, acquired the covetted 3rd leg to give her her CD. It was well earned by both of us! She got the 1st leg way back in Sept. '99 at her 1st ever trial. I took her to a trial in Apr. 2000, but she was too interested in sitting on the judge's feet to even think about doing her off-least work. Then we didn't do anything for 2 1/2 yrs. We tried at several trials last fall, but no luck. But yesterday and today, the girl got it all together, harnessed the nerves, paid attention, sat (mostly) when she ought to, came when called, and stayed like a rock. Two trials, and 2 qualifying scores -- nothing stellar mark-wise, but more than enough for the purpose! And best of all, the girl had fun doing it! She smiled and wagged and gave ample kisses the entire weekend. Now, this doesn't mean she's all grown up and settled down, for it was just 2 weeks ago that she snacked on my father's dentures. And it was just this past week that the little madam lead me a panicked frantic chase through an absolute blizzard for 1 1/2 hours with me calling frantically for her while I followed her rapidly disappearing tracks -- down the road, across the road, through the neighbours' yards, and finally losing them at the edge of the woods. I returned home (while I could still see the house lights to guide me through the snow) to dress warmer, exchange my totally inadequate low shoes for proper boots, grab extra flashlight batteries, the 2-way radio, and saddle up a horse -- I was just heading out to do the saddling and she comes barrelling in the house all sheepish and apologetic. I never did find out where she'd run off too, but did find where she got through the fence. So maybe this weekend's hard work was to attone for my near frozen, terrified, and sleepless state the other night yeah right, since when has Aeryn possessed a conscience?? Who cares?! Now she possesses a CD I can't help myself, I'm sitting here grinning like the proverbial Cheshire Cat! sue(Aeryn with Devyn Rowyn)
Aeryn CD p.s.
Oh geez, I can't believe I forgot to mention this in my original post. Today's accomplishment has an extra special meaning for me, as today would have been Kellu's 8th birthday -- although I did have some tears for my lost love, I was bouyed by thinking that it was a very fitting tribute to 'Lu, that Aeryn got her CD today. oh darn, there I go blubbering again sue(Aeryn with Devyn Rowyn) celebrating our victory and mourning our lost angels Kellu Talon
RE: Dogs call names
Hola! Many years ago, at the Winter Olympic Games, there was a Canadian couple in figure skating that did a fantastic performance with the music of the Ravel Bolero, and I loved it! When my boy was given to me (at 7mo), his call name was TOM...I wanted something different. As we were driving home the Bolero came to my mind, so I called him Ravel Ü. Re: Dogs call names
I for one, have to spend time with a new pup or dog to name it. The name has to fit the dog. My first Berner Beau was named by my husband. The man who used to say, We don't need another dog. After a week with us and no name, my husband arrived home from the neighboring town, at the tip of Cape Cod and announced he had a name for Pup-pup. He was driving across a narrow stretch of land, bordered on one side by Cape Cod Bay, and the other by East Harbor and the dunes beyond. The sun was shining on the water and suddenly the name Beauregard just popped into his head. In spite of my husbands fears that we would all laugh at him, we immediately agreed that Beauregard he was. As for Halley, our re-homed BARC girl, she came to us named Brandy. This did not work for us at all. She came home and after a few days of my boys watching this whirling dervish and her boundless energy, they named her Halley, after Halley's Comet. Shes is fast, she is bright, she travels, she shines. Janice Parky and Halley BARC's Comet Comes Home In memory of Beau, Pond Village Beauregard North Truro, MA

Question about Dog Call Names
I can't find the email that started all of the chat about Dogs call names, so I'm not sure if the answer to my question lies there or not. However, I have always been curious about how a dog is supposed to be named. We adopted our Berner as rookies, and didn't know much about what to consider when registering her with AKC. We wanted to name her Bridger after the Bridger Mountains near Bozeman Montana, where my husband and I met at college and lived for 6 years. We just tacked on the kennel name to Bridger for AKC registration, but have no idea if that's what you are supposed to do. I figured I'd ask the question, since everyone's talking about it. So, what is involved in the name? What does Ch. mean? What does what do you mean by c litter or p litter. I feel ignorant, but I guess I'll never learn if I don't ask the question.
