[Blind-Computing] I.E.9 & Assistive Technology

2013-05-15 Thread Annette Carr
Hello All,

I am looking for feedback about the use of I.E.9 and JAWS 12, ZoomText 10
and Magic 12. Do the versions of each of these programs work with I.E.9?
If JAWS 12 is not an option, what about JAWS 14? Any info that you can
provide will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Annette

Re: [Blind-Computing] Attachment that are not there

2013-04-25 Thread Annette Carr
The problem might be that your attachments are embedded in the body of the
message and JAWS cannot find them. This is the result of the message being
in Rich Text format. I am not sure how to fix the problem in Office 2007,
but in 2010 you have to change the message format to Plain Text or HTML.
Also in 2010 there is a way to set messages to be read in another format
than Rich Text.

Hi all.
I am working on microsoft Outlook 2007, and I have 2 eMails with
attachments. I sent those files from my home. When I open those emails, and
I press insert A, jaws says is not attachment on this eMail. I press shift
tab, trying to get where normally the attachments are, but is anything
there.
How can I take those attachments, when outlook says that the email has an
attachment in the list view, but when I open the eMail, is not attachment?
Thanks

Re: [Blind-Computing] Making and printing bulletins in MS Word 2010

2013-04-24 Thread Annette Carr
Mark,

I have not been following this thread very closely, so if you have already
provided the answers to my below questions, I apologize.

What is the size of the paper you are using before you fold it?
What will the size of the bulletin be once it is finished?
Will you be stapling the pages together? If so, by hand or will the
photocopy machine be doing the stapling?
How many pages will the finished bulletin have? The cover page counts as 1,
the backside of the cover is 2, the page opposite 2 is 3, the back side of
page 3 is 4, and so on.
Will the text be arranged in 2 or more columns on each page?
What version of MS-Word are you using?

Well, actually I tried tabbing through the printer options and changing

JAWS cursor I found a spot on the screen that said that the system is set

Hello Mark,

You might want to check the page layout of your word document. It should be
under the Page Layout tab under page set up option, make sure that it is set
to portrait. Which means the page is vertical in position.

Printing the pages in order should not be a problem. Alt + F to get to the
word options menu, under print you just hit enter there. You will get a
dialog box for the print options. Select the ones you want like pages per
sheet 1 etc. Make sure you have the right size of paper loaded in the
printer e.g. A4, which is the normal letter size page. Rest you need to tab
around and come to the print button and hit enter.

Suggestion would be that you practice this with sighted assistance first few
times. Then when you are all set to go, you can do it yourself without any
assistance.

For the most part, BlackBoard is accessible with JAWS. There are some parts
that work better than other parts. The biggest problem is in the documents
that the instructors put up for your access. Many will convert a document

to work with the instructor to obtain a different format, or you will have
to convert it yourself.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Times in Excel

2013-03-15 Thread Annette Carr
Of course there are always multiple ways to accomplish things in Excel, so
here is one option.

If you want your times in column A to increase by 15 minutes for each entry
in that column, place your starting time in cell A5.
Identify a cell to contain the time increment that you want to increase each
entry by. In your example it is 15 minutes. Let's pick B2 for this, so
enter 0:15 in that cell. Note 1, if you want to increase your times by 90
minutes, you will need to enter 1:30. Note 2, you can place this cell
anywhere in the sheet you want so that it does not have to be so visible.
In cell A6 enter the following formula:
$B$2+A5
Note 3, the use of the dollar signs. By placing a dollar sign before a row
or column reference, it will prevent that value from changing when you copy
and paste the formula into another cell.
Now copy A6 and paste it into cell A7, and each of the cells where you want
the time to increase by 15 minutes from the time above it.
If at some point you want to generate a list of times that increase by a
different value, you just need to change the value in B2, or where ever you
have that value hiding.
Note 4, your times will be displayed in 24 hours format. I do not know how
to accomplish this task and have the times displayed in 12 hour format.

Annette

Stephanie: I deal with SharePoint regularly, and I'd say that it's not
completely inaccessible, but using it can be a real challenge. It depends
on the views that are used and what the content you're trying to access is.
For instance, I have to access spreadsheets stored in SharePoint, which is
basically impossible in the view we use. So, I've found it much better to
go to the actions menu and export the spreadsheet to an Excel file on my
computer.
There are work-around, and if you have a good sighted assistant who
understands SharePoint and the ways it can present data, you'll probably be
OK. If you don't have that, be prepared to be frustrated as you learn to
use the SharePoint.
Good luck, with this.

Re: [Blind-Computing] excel printing

2013-02-24 Thread Annette Carr
Yes, I agree, printing spreadsheets that are visually pleasing and usable is
a real challenge for a blind user. If you are printing the same reports
time after time, then it is worth the time to sit down with someone sighted
and format the document. If the reports change all of the time, then here
are some things to keep in mind that will need to be checked and possibly
modified before printing a spreadsheet.

Is your data too wide or too long to fit on 1 sheet of paper?
Do the margins need to be adjusted?
Is landscape or portrait better for displaying the information in the
spreadsheet?
Is the width of the column too long or too short for the data that is
displayed in it?
Is using Wrap Text in a cell an option for reducing the width of a cell or
column?
Consider whether the data in a column should be Left justified, Centered or
Right justified? Examples: money should be Right justified so that the
decimal points are aligned in a vertical line. Column headings are often
centered, but depending on the data it is representing you might need to
left or right justify it to improve readability.
If a header is significantly longer than the data it represents, is there
another way to display the header? Examples: Wrap text, abbreviate the
words in the header, display the text vertically or at an angle.
Font size might need to be adjusted to be able to fit more info on the page
or to improve readability. Larger font is helpful when there is a lot of
numbers to read.
Although grid lines are visible on the screen, do you need to turn them on
for your print out to improve readability?
Some people like to use alternating colored rows to improve readability.
This can play havoc with JAWS. Grey shading works better with JAWS, but you
have to be aware of how dark it is so that it does not decrease readability
of the text. If you have to frequently add rows between printings, this can
throw off the alternating color pattern. I'm not sure if there is a setting
in Excel that automatically manages the alternating pattern.
Is your header row mark as such so that it can be told to repeat at the top
of every page?
When the row of data spreads out across 2 pages, is there a need for
repeating a particular column of information so that the reader knows which
row of data they are reading?

Although it is doable for a visually impaired person to format a spreadsheet
to be visually pleasing ad well as readable, it is extremely time consuming.
There are a number of JAWS command that can provide you with information so
that you can figure out if you need to make adjustments, but it usually
takes many hardcopy reviews by a sighted person. Also keep in mind that
when a sighted person makes final formatting adjustments to a spreadsheet,
they can usually accomplish it with just a drag of a mouse at the point of
the problem. So here are my final thoughts on this topic:

1. Ask for more training with how to use Excel with JAWS.
2. See if you can format a document once and not have to adjust it every
time you need to print a report.
3. Can you provide your spreadsheets electronically so that the recipient
can make the necessary visual adjustments?
4. Is it possible for you to receive reader services from a human?
Sometimes it is cheaper to hire a reader then to have the employee
accomplish this task independently. If they are paying you $20 per hour and
it takes you 3 hours to get the document ready for final printing, they are
paying out $60 and losing 2.5 hours or more of productive time out of you.
With the assistance of a reader, you most likely can get a spreadsheet
formatted with sighted help in less than 30 minutes. So a reader hired at
$10 per hour will put the cost of accomplishing this task at $15 for 30
minutes of work. Now most reader services have a hourly minimum, so if it
is 2 hours the cost of this 30 minute job is $30. Still less than the $60
of you doing it yourself. I'm sure you can find other tasks that the reader
can help you with during the remaining 90 minutes.

Ok, I will stop rambling on as I've drifted off-topic.

HTH,
Annette

Hello,

This is kind of difficult to answer for any blind computer user. You might
want to look at the page layout of your excel sheet. If it's portrait it
means it's vertical in layout. If it's landscape, it's horizontal in layout.
Printing a worksheet also depends on how many columns you have filled in the
sheet, there is a difference on how many cells are actually visible and are
actually there. The key combination Insert + F1 will give you the summary of
the worksheet in focus.

Also under the view menu, you can choose how the worksheet can be seen,

Re: [Blind-Computing] Last Month Expanded in Outlook 2010

2012-10-30 Thread Annette Carr
In Outlook 2010 quickly find a message by searching on an exact word or
phrase from the header or body of the message you are searching for by
following these steps:

1. Shift+Tab twice to move into an edit box.
2. Type or paste in an exact word or phrase that you know is in the message
you are looking for. Capitalization does not matter, but everything else
does. Sometimes less is better.
3. Tab or Shift+Tab until you are in the list view of the search results.
The number of times you have to press either of these commands will depend
on how you have your Outlook view set up.
4. Use up and down arrow to move through the list, Enter to open a message,
ESC to close an open message, and ESC when in the list view to close the
search.

Comments: This searching technique also works in Notes and Calendar. There
is a way to tell it to search in all folders, but I'm yet to figure this
out. I'm thinking that there must be a way to search on a date, but again,
I have not figured this out.

Another way to find all messages from a sender if you can find one message
in that folder from that sender is:

1. When in the list view for the folder in which you want to search, move
to the message, but do not open it.
2. Press the applications key (or Shift+F10) to bring up a context menu.
3. Arrow to Find Related and press Enter or press F to open a submenu.
4. There are 2 choices on the submenu, arrow to "From Sender" and press
Enter, or press S.
5. The list of matching items is presented. Use up and down arrow to
navigate the list, Enter to open and read a message, ESC to close an open
message and ESC when at the list to close the search results.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Reading Tables in MS Word with Jaws

When entering data in a cell of a table, there are a few things to be aware
of.

When using TAB and Shift+TAB to move through your table, the contents of the
cell will be highlighted when you land in the cell. If you press a
character , Enter or SpaceBar, the contents will be erased from the cell and
replaced with whatever you pressed. This is an ideal way of replacing the
contents of a cell when you want to paste new info.

If there is information in the cell and you need to add more info into that

to the location in the cell where you want to add the new information.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Reading Tables in MS Word with Jaws

2012-10-04 Thread Annette Carr
You can use the arrow keys to navigate a table, but that will move you
character by character when you use the right and left arrows, and line by
line with the up and down arrows. This is fine, but can require a lot of
key presses. Another option is using Control+Alt+arrows. When using the
key combination with the up and down arrows you will move up and down from
row to row within the same column and JAWS will read the entire contents of
the cell. When using the key combination with the right and left arrows,
you will move right and left across a row. Again, JAWS will read the
content of the cell as you move into that cell.

You can also use Tab and Shift+Tab to move through a table. When using the
TAB key you will move from left to right across a row. When you get to the
end of the row, another press of the TAB key will move you to the first cell
of the next row. Shift+Tab will do the reverse, moving you from right to
left and from bottom to top.

When using Tab to move through the table, and you press it when you are in
the last cell in the last row, a new row will be added. If you did not want
to do this, use Control+z to Undo this action.

HTH,
Annette

Mark,

Once you enter the table, you should be in the first "box." That would be
Row 1, Column 1.

The first row is likely a number of headers.

You should be able to use the arrow keys to travel down the column or across
the row; stopping in each element.

Also, using the key will move you to each succeeding element.

For example, if there are 6 columns and 8 rows, continually using the
from Row 1, Column 1 should take you to Column 2, Column 3, Column 4, Column
5 and Column 6; using the in Row 1, Column 6 should take you to Row 2,
Column 1, etc.

Using will cause to navigate up the table.

Once you find yourself in the middle of the table, using the right and left
arrow keys will move you along the row; using the up and down arrows keys
will move you up and down the column.

Hi
I recently received an important MS word document that has a table with
data I need to enter. How do I go about reading the various boxes in the

I am using JAWS 14 beta, and MS office 2010 on a windows 7 computer.

Hello,

I have a junior high and a high school student whose teachers are using a

They both have JAWS 12 on their laptops. JAWS will read some things, but
they need a sighted peer to read the graphics.

Does anyone know an online math program that works better with JAWS?

Thanks,

Did you attempt using the JAWS pass through key, Insert + 3 (in the numbers
row), before your key stroke? This assures JAWS is not attempting to
interfere and run some script.

Re: [Blind-Computing] links won't open on a web page

2012-09-22 Thread Annette Carr
I've run into this with JAWS 12 and I.E.8 on 3 different computers running
Windows7. Sometimes it is the same website that gives me trouble across all
3 computers, and other websites act differently across computers. Here is
what I do when I press enter on a link and nothing happens:

1. Press the up or down arrow once to move off of the link.
2. Press the opposite arrow to move back onto the link.
3. Open the applications menu.
4. Make a selection between Open, Open in new tab, open in new window, by
arrowing to what I want and pressing Enter.

My guess is that maybe it has something to do with how the website is set up
or maybe something to do with security settings on each of the computers.

HTH,
Annette

Re: [Blind-Computing] searching for a file

2012-09-18 Thread Annette Carr
After doing a lot of searching, I found a way to search for a file with a
specific modified date. Once you have opened the drive or folder where you
want to look for a file, tab to the search box and type:

System.DateModified:mm/dd/

Be aware that there are capital letters and lower case ones. I do not know
if it matters if you have to be case sensitive. You will also need to do a
2 digit month and day, and a 4 digit year.

Now I've got to be honest, I did not finish typing in the above text. At
some point I heard JAWS announcing something and I then found that I could
use my up and down arrows to select if I wanted to look for a file from last
week, earlier this week, yesterday, etc. I picked yesterday and pressed
enter and I got the results I needed.

Here is the URL to where I found this info:

http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/Advanced-tips-for-searching-in-W
indows

Once on the webpage, press T and you will find a small table with examples
of other search terms.

HTH,
Annette

Re: [Blind-Computing] Turning off the mouse pad

2012-09-18 Thread Annette Carr
My personal laptop has a button above the mouse pad that lets me toggle the
mouse pad on and off, and I love it.

This work laptop has one of those "eraser" type mouse sticks in the middle
of the keyboard. I'm thinking that if I turn off the mouse pad, the mouse
stick will still be active. If not, the mouse dependent people will just
have to move over to my side of the keyboard. Smile!!

For the sake of example, let's say you want to insert a new empty row
between Row 6 and Row 7. To do this:

- position the cursor on any cell of Row 7.
- use the +I keystrokes to request insertion.
- Then use the R key to create the new empty Row 7.

All subsequent rows (including the former Row 7) will have been incremented
by 1.

You can do something similar to insert a new column, but after the +I
keystrokes use the C key to create the new empty column

You could also use the menu/ribbon, but I really can't find the row/column
specific items on the ribbon so I can't tell you how to do that.

Ann Annette, I have found that using Control+Enter will sometimes activate
a link which doesn't ordinarily respond to the normal Enter key, alone.
This happens a lot with the Apple ITunes store.
I'm not sure why.
I do remember reading something about what were called Safety Links, links
which would not respond unless a certain key combination was used with the
Enter key.
This might be way off base but I hope it helps.

Hi All,

I have been finding a number of websites in which I am unable to activate
the links on that page. When I hear JAWS announce that I am on a link, I
press the Enter key. In more and more situations, nothing happens. I have
tried using the applications key and have found that Open is not a choice on
the menu until I have attempted at least once to use the Enter key to
activate the link without success. So the sequence looks like this:

. Navigate to the desired link

. Activate the application menu and find that open is not on the
menu.

. Press Escape to close the applications menu.

. Ensure that I am really on the link.

. Press the Enter key to try and activate the link.

. If nothing happens, activate the applications key.

. Select Open, Open in new tab or Open in new window, and then press
the Enter key.

. The link is now activated and the new page is opened.

I am using I.E. 8, Office 2010, and JAWS 12 on a Windows7 64bit computer.
I've even tried JAWS 11. I have not gotten around to trying JAWS 13.

Does anyone have any ideas to why this is happening? Is it a JAWS issue, an
I.E. issue or a Security setting? Is there a way to change it?

Thanks,

Annette

Re: [Blind-Computing] Cannot activate some links in I.E. 8

2012-05-28 Thread Annette Carr
I have used both Insert+ESC and F5 with no change. I am not losing focus as
I remain on the link I am trying to activate. I've used Control+Tab to move
away from that tab and added the Shift key to the command to move back with
no difference. The problem is definitely website dependent as I can go back
to the problem sites and continue to experience the problem.

Hello there;
Have you tried refreshing the screen with insert+escape.
Although I'm using IE9,
Sometimes this happens, I just press the f6-key, This seems to bring the
page To focus; Or maybe, try; press ctrl+f6 this places you at the top of
the page.

Hi all,

Annette, in addition to what other listers have suggested, try these
alternatives:

Sometimes, you may need to press insert plus f7 and click on the desired
link from within the list of links to make it work.

Another solution you may try is to tab or shift tab away from the link, then
tab back to it and press enter. Remember, don't use the arrow keys, use tab
instead. Jaws uses a virtual buffer which sometimes doesn't interact
properly with some of the webpage elements.

Hope that helps!

[Blind-Computing] Cannot activate some links in I.E. 8

2012-05-27 Thread Annette Carr

Thanks,

Annette

Re: [Blind-Computing] Word and paragraphs

2012-02-18 Thread Annette Carr
I'm not 100% that this will help you, but you might want to give it a try:

1. Tap ALT to move to the ribbon.
2. Navigate to the Home tab.
3. Press enter to open the home menu.
4. Press TAB until you get to Line and Paragraph spacing. This is around
30 plus presses of the TAB key. Of course there is a short cut, but I
believe in doing it manually first.
5. Press enter to open this menu and arrow down to something that says
options.
6. Tab until you get to a check box that talks about space between
paragraphs and check or uncheck it as needed.

Hopefully this will do the trick.

Word 2010 and Jaws 13. When I hit a hard carriage return, it puts an entire
line between paragraphs which I don't want, and also Jaws does not show the
space when arrowing up and down through the document. Is there a way to fix
this? I've not set any paragraph settings or line spacing or anything
different than what was out of the box. I really wish Microsoft would not
impose these sort of assumptions. Thanks in advance for any help you might
have. I need to find a solution ASAP.

It sounds like you need to disable protective view. This is something new
with Office 2010, and might have also been a part of Office
2007 when a file
is sent to you from somewhere else.

I'm going to give you some directions below, but since I do not have a
protected doc to open I cannot be sure of the exact wording of some of the
items you need to select.

1. Alt+F to open the File menu.
2. Down arrow to the Information Tab.
3. Right arrow to Enable.
4. Press enter.

Annette, Can't think of any. I'm using XP Pro, JAWS 13 and the virtual
ribbons. Later I'll send myself something and turn off the virtual ribbons
and see if that may be it. I still have JAWS 12 too so will play with that

I do not remember your original question, but I'm assuming that you want to
sort the information in the spreadsheet based on the data for each record in
a particular column. If that is correct, then you will need to select sort
from the data menu.

Each month, I do a spreadsheet for two bowling leagues with which I also

Is there a command by which I can have my excel program, excel 2003, list
the bowlers by placement, first to last?

I understand that I have to use the data menu, with which I'm totally
unfamiliar.

Which choice on that menu do I use?

I which to have our bowlers listed top to bottom, first to last, including
scores and averages.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

My office suite is Microsoft 2003.

I'm using windows, XP, Professional.

Many thanks for your help,

I have never used the Neat Receipts scanner or Neat Desk scanner before, but
I guess the accessibility all depends on the software that comes with it and
also what OCR software that you use to scan the papers with.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Reading Power Point File with Jaws 12?

2011-11-30 Thread Annette Carr
Well, the last time I used PowerPoint JAWS did not read anything more than
the title of the slide when in the presentation. Maybe it has improved and
someone else on this list can advise you. If you are only hearing the title
then you need to ask for the file with the individual slides, not the final
presentation. If you do not want to get involved with navigating the
individual slides, then ask for the PowerPoint to be converted to Word.

Annette

Re: [Blind-Computing] Reading Power Point File with Jaws 12?

2011-11-30 Thread Annette Carr
There are many views in which to work in PowerPoint. Slide View/design,
slide show, slide sorter, thumb nail and outline. JAWS interacts
differently with each of these. Which mode are you working in? Are you
creating a slide or reading a presentation?

If you are in the slide view where you create and edit slides, page Up and
Page Down will move you from slide to slide. Once on a slide, use tab to
move from object to object on that page. If it is an object containing
text, Enter will allow you to edit the contents of that object. The last
time I used PowerPoint it was with Office 2007 and JAWS 11. JAWS still
could not read all objects. Many times Outline view is a better option for
reading the text.

If you are in the slide show, last time I tried it, JAWS was only reading
the title of the slide. I think the arrows allowed me to go forward and
back through the slides.

It has been a while since I used PowerPoint on a regular basis.

HTH,
Annette

Re: [Blind-Computing] Why is it read twice?

2011-11-29 Thread Annette Carr
Yes, I've also seen this happen. My trouble shooting techniques for things
like this are:

1. Randomly move the mouse and hope that it is moved to the edge of the
screen - if that does not work,
2. Insert+ESC - if that does not work,
3. Select all with Control+a then Insert+ESC - If that does not work,
4. Close the word processor and then restart it- if that does not work,
5. Shut the computer down and restart it.

HTH,
Annette

Hi Annette,

Thank you very much for your info on the FN + number row keystrokes. She
has an down arrow on the 3 key, & an up arrow on the 4 key. We were hoping
that was what these keys were used for but, didn't know what other key to
use in conjunction with them. These keystrokes along with the FN key + up /
down arrows, if they will work on this laptop, will be her best bet for
changing her volume level on the fly until she learns to navigate this
computer keyboard better. Thank you so much. Take care.

P.S. I was able to turn off her touch pad & that did eliminate a whole bunch
of confusion, to say the least! LOL

Hi Jerry,
No, you can not copy and paste messages from Windows Mail to a folder
outside of the program.
This is also true of Outlook Express.
However, you can export messages from Windows Mail to another folder on the
hard drive using the export wizard.
Now, having said that, here is the catch.
The folder you are exporting to must be empty, and the file names will
contain letters and numbers with the .eml extension.
I haven't tried this yet, but you might try saving the messages with a new
name, before exporting them.
The folder which has the focus at the time you run the export wizard, is the
one which will be exported.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Reading Power Point File with Jaws 12?

2011-10-01 Thread Annette Carr
Hmm, I'm not really sure what is going on. Maybe there is only one object
on the slide, and maybe that one item is an object that cannot be read by
JAWS. I am not using PowerPoint as much these days, so hopefully there are
other people on this list who know of other ways of dealing with this. Keep
us posted as to whether or not you figure out a way to read these slides.

I am thinking that PowerPoint 2007 and 2010 have some new ways of presenting
information that might not be accessible to JAWS. So if you find objects
that JAWS will not read and they are something other than the obvious
graphic, let us know.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Reading Power Point File with Jaws 12?

2011-09-20 Thread Annette Carr
If the slide show has been created correctly, you have 2 choices of how to
read the information.

read the info off of the slides by:
1. Using TAB to move from object to object on a single slide.
2. If you press enter, you will be able to edit the contents of that
object. You do not have a need to do this when just reading the
information. If you accidently press enter, just press Escape to get out of
the editing mode of that object.
3. Use Page up to move forward to the next slide and Page Down to move
back a slide.

Reading the information in the outline:
1. There is a way to set the pane on the left side of the screen to display
the contents of the slide show in the outline view. Off of the top of my
head, I do not remember how to do this in PowerPoint 2007.
2. Use F6 to move from pane to pane until you get to the Outline pane.
3. Use your JAWS reading and navigation commands to move through and read
the information.

HTH,
Annette

Re: [Blind-Computing] printing raffle tickets

2011-09-09 Thread Annette Carr
I've just used MS-Word and once I printed them out, I had someone sighted
cut them for me.

What about using name badge cards. They come in a sheet so that you can put
them through the printer. The name badge package will tell you what label
template to use. You just get one set up and then the rest are
automatically generated. If you are needing a 2-part ticket or an unique ID
number on each ticket, then this idea is not ideal although it could be
modified.

Re: [Blind-Computing] how do set up a distribution list in outlook 2007.

2011-08-30 Thread Annette Carr
Below are directions for

. Sharing a distribution list by e-mail
. saving a distribution list that was e-mailed to you
. Creating a new distribution list
. Adding names to a distribution list
. Deleting names from a distribution list

Save a Distribution List Shared with You

If a Distribution List (or other Contact) is emailed to you, you must first
save it to your Contacts folder before you can use it for sending email.

1. Open the message with the attached Distribution List.

2.Double-click on the attachment. The Distribution List will open.

3.Go to the File menu and select Copy to Folder..

4.Select the desired Contacts folder and click OK.

5.You can now use the Distribution List to send email.

Share a Distribution List with Another User You can send a Distribution
List, or any other Contact, with another user. Keep in mind that any changes
made to your list will not be seen in the list sent to another person, as
they are separate files.

1. Open a new email message and address the message as usual.

2.Click on the drop-down arrow next to the Attachment button and choose
Item.

3.In the Insert Item dialog box, select the Contacts folder in the Look
in list.

4.Next, select the Distribution List that you wish to send in the list
at the bottom of the box.

5.Click OK.

6.Complete the email message as desired and Send.

Create a Distribution List

This tutorial will show you how to create a Distribution List that will be
part of your default Contacts folder. The same procedures will apply if you
choose to create a Distribution List in another Contacts folder, such as
Public Folder.

1. In Outlook, go to your Contacts folder.

2.On the File menu, point to New, and then select Distribution List.

3.The Distribution List dialog box will open.

4.In the Name box, type the name you wish to give the list (i.e.,
Project Planning Committee).

5.If you would like to add a description or any other information about
the Distribution List, click the Notes tab and type the information in the
large notes field.

6.Next, you will need to specify which email addresses should be
included in the distribution list.

Add or Delete Distribution List Members

Once you have created a Distribution List, you must add the email addresses
you wish to be included in the list. You may open the list and add new
members at any time; you may also remove members as needed.

NOTE: To open the Distribution List for editing, go to your Contacts folder
(or the folder where the list is stored). Locate the list and double-click
on the name.

Add Members from an Outlook Address Book

1. In the open Distribution List dialog box, make sure the Members tab
is selected and click the Select Members button.

2.In the Show names from the list box, select the address book that
contains the e-mail addresses you want in your Distribution List. (The
default is the Global Address List for the VUMC Outlook system, but you may
choose any Address or Contact list available to you.)

3.In the Type name or select from list box, type the last name of a
person you wish to include to jump to that section of the list. Select the
name, and then click the Members button. Do this for each person you wish to
add to the Distribution List, and then click OK.

4.Be sure to click the Save and Close button in the Distribution List
dialog box to save your changes.[cid:image001.jpg@01CC6663.08514100]

Add a Member by Hand

If the email address of a person you wish to add to the list is NOT part of
an existing Address Book or Contact List, you may add them by hand.
Examples might be VU employees outside of the Medical Center, vendors,
consultants, etc.

1. In the open Distribution List dialog box, make sure the Members tab
is selected and click the Add New button.

2.In the Add New Member dialog box, type in the Display Name and the
E-mail Address, then click the OK button.

3.Repeat this procedure for each address you wish to add that is not
contained in the existing address books or contact lists.

4.Be sure to click the Save and Close button in the Distribution List
dialog box to save your changes.

Delete a Member

In the event that you no longer wish to include an email address in the
Distribution List, you may delete it.

1. In the open Distribution List dialog box, make sure the Members tab
is selected and

2.click on the address you wish to delete.

3.Next, click on the Remove button.

4.Be sure to click the Save and Close button in the Distribution List
dialog box to save your changes.

I need a step by step

[Blind-Computing] Managing notes and course material

2011-08-30 Thread Annette Carr
Hello All,

I am going to be taking a training later this week in which I have been
given the very large document of course materials in an accessible PDF. The
course instructor quickly moves through the material sequentially but only
talks about specific items in the material that are either new, or best
support the topic being discussed. I would love to be able to follow along
in the PDF and then be able to make notes that correspond to the item the
instructor is highlighting. This is an annual training that I am required
to attend each year, so in the past I've tried following along in the PDF
and then ALT+TAB to write notes in the open Word doc, and I've also tried
not even bothering with the PDF and just taking notes in the Word doc. The
problem is that I can't match up my notes with the information in the course
material. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can read through the info in
the PDF and be able to take notes without leaving the program displaying the
PDF. I've got access to a Windows 7 64 bit laptop with JAWS 11 and 12, a
Verizon iPhone and an iPad first generation. I do not have a Bluetooth
keyboard for my i-devices, but if that is all I am missing to make some app
work, a trip to the apple store could be worked out.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Annette

Books from BookShare require no convertion. I am currently reading these
books on my iPhone, but when I did read their books on my computer, it was
very easy to "unpack" the books and read them on the computer or on my

My version of e-book? Just take whatever file format given and convert it to
a plain text file, and put it on my braille display device. Easy, fast and
the files take up little space. I'm seeing a lot more formats around
nowadays and I have no idea about some of them. You can get converters for
.lit files and make them into word documents, plain text or probably html if
you want. PDF files and adobe in general I want little to do with so I'm
actually looking for a standalone converter that will render the files as
plaintext without me even having to open Adobe reader.

Unfortunately, there is no one definition for e-books. It depends on the
provider of the book. For example, Overdrive's e-books are in some type of
PDF that is not accessible. I have not had time to play with them to figure
out if you can convert the file into something that can be read by JAWS or
other A.T. I use the Overdrive's e-audio books that can be in MP3 or the
Apple iProduct format.

I would love to hear from others on the list on this topic.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Lenny's keyboard question

2011-03-30 Thread Annette Carr
These roll up keyboards are frequently referred to as flexi-keyboards. I've
seen them at local Staples stores, but you can also find them all over the
internet. Some of them do not provide tactile feedback, while others have
springs inside the rubber sealed keys so that you can feel the keys move as
you press them.

some USB keyboards that might work for what you want. I bought one for my
wife, but she never used it, and it's somewhere in the maw of my basement.
The keyboard is made of some kind of rubber, and can be rolled up for easy
storage/transport. If I remember it right, the keys were pretty easy to
feel. It was not expensive, so you might want to go to their site and take
a look.

The problem that I had where the weather page changed to something not

examining the log file from the combofix program. It was thought to be
malware or a virus at first. The log file indicated that there were some
corrupted registry keys. That explains why non of the anti virus or spyware
programs found anything. I do not know how or why it happened but grateful
to the techs at eset for their help. I guess in total they worked on the

Re: [Blind-Computing] How to copy text only using Excel 2007

2011-03-02 Thread Annette Carr
In Excel select the cells you want to copy.
Use Control+C to copy the information.
Navigate to a new Word document.
Use Paste special instead of Control+V.

If this does not work, follow the above steps and just use a Control+V to
paste the information in the table format. Then select all of the cells and
from the table tab convert the table to text. Sorry for not being specific,
but I do not have 2007 here at home and do not yet have it committed to
memory.

How do I copy only the word list?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Sent/Outbox in Outlook

2011-02-07 Thread Annette Carr
As far as I know, all messages that you are sending go through the Outbox
and then a copy ends up in your sent folder or someplace else if you have
told it to go there. If you find a message in the Outbox, that indicates
that there was a problem with the message and it was not sent to the
recipient, and you do not have a copy in the sent folder.

Like Janie said, messages that are waiting to be sent will be in outbox, and

those that have been sent will be in sent items.

Drafts is generally where a message gets saved if you started composing it,
and then decided to close it, but save the current version, until you finish

it off later, and tell it to be sent, then it will be moved to the outbox.

Re: [Blind-Computing] audio text books

2010-12-10 Thread Annette Carr
Hi,

It sounds like you have already gone the route of BookShare, NLS and RFB&D,
so now it is time to check out public sources such as Audible, Amazon,
Borders, and others by doing a Google search for audio books. Of course
there is a very good chance that none of these public sources have what you
need either.

Have you talked to your university to see if they have services to either
obtain the books from the publisher or scan them into a file for you. Yes,
it needs to be the university to contact the publisher, and not the student.

If you have a sheet scanner and something like OpenBook or Kurzweil, you can
scan them in yourself. Places like Kinko's or office supply stores can cut
the binding off so that you can use the sheet feeder. When you are done
scanning the book they can put a comb binding on the book to keep the
printed pages together in case you need to refer back to the printed book
for pictures, tables, charts, etc. I think that some of these places also
scan documents into an electronic file, but I do not know what file options
you would have.

If you do not own OCR software you might want to check out the reasonably
priced products by Premier Software at URL readingmadeeasy.com (That is
reading made easy, without spaces between the words) or Abby Fine available
at most local computer supply stores.

There are service providers around the country who scan books in for a fee
which some rehabilitation agencies will pay for.

You can always resort back to how we did it last century, have a person read
the book into a recording. I'm sure you do not even own a cassette
recorder, but digital recorders can do the same job. Some digital recorders
have the ability to put an index marker in the recording for easy
navigation. These marks can be used to indicate the start of chapters or
sections. The reading assignments can be read into separate files in the
order of their due date. These files can be downloaded to a computer and
e-mailed to you or burned to a CD. Retired school teachers and professors
are often willing to volunteer their time to read textbooks. Churches are
another good source for finding volunteer readers.

Due to the amount of time and effort that goes into obtaining accessible
textbooks, you have to start working on it the semester before.

Hope you find this info helpful.

Annette

Subject: [Blind-Computing] daily information

Daily Tip:
Show Specific Dates In Outlook

Microsoft Outlook's calendar usually displays dates in a consecutive manner,
but if you have particularly busy dates that occur on different days of the
month, you can view them in one pane. When you view your Calendar in
Outlook, find the pane that contains the mini-calendar. Hold CTRL and click
the dates on the mini-calendar you want to display. Outlook will display
your schedule for the days you select in the right-hand pane.

  Daily Term:
land

A land is the smooth part of the underside of a CD-ROM, as opposed to a pit,
which is an indentation on the underside of a CD-ROM. When the laser from a
CD drive passes over a land, more light is reflected back to the photo cell
than when the laser passes over a pit. This is how a CD drive distinguishes
between pits and lands. The pits and lands equal the ones and zeros that
make up the binary language of computing.

HI Annette,

You might be able to get away with using Switch for the trial period, at
which point, once you've gotten the file down, you use the Switch software
while it's in it's trial phase, and convert it to M4A. At that point, you
can load it onto iTunes, then sync it with the Touch.

If you do a Google search for Switch file converter, it'll take you right to
the website within the first or second hits.

So, just to recap...

You would use the WavePad utility in the Accessories menu, and record the
sound, or what ever it is you want to distort, then it'll save as a Wave
format recording.

At that point, you use Switch file converter to convert the sound into the
M4A format, then load it onto the Touch where she can use the App to
manipulate it.

I just downloaded Wave Pad, and it might be helpful. It has a sound
library, that maybe we can start with by downloading a sound and edit it to
achieve the effect we are looking. If anyone can direct me to sound effects
such as very large trucks rumbling past, or better yet earthquake rumbling,
that would be great.

Does anyone know if there are any JAWS scripts for Wave Pad. JAWS is not
telling me what each of the buttons are. But maybe I do not need to use the
buttons, and can control everything from either the menus or short cut keys.

Hello List,

I am wondering if there are any free software programs out there that will
let the user create and record a sound to a format that can be played on a
iTouch. My daughter is working on a science project where she has to
generate a sound that simulates a compression wave such as that of an
earthquake. She has to be able to control the frequency, decibel and
duration of the generated sound. The saved sound will then need to be
played back from her iTouch. Of course I am hoping that there is a program
that is compatible with JAWS running on a laptop with XP.
Otherwise it
needs to run on a laptop with Vista. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I do not use Outlook and do not have my own iPod Touch or an iPad, so I am
just passing on information. I can not personally testify to it's
operation. It is from Leo LePorte, a Technology Journalist who has been
broadcasting computer advise for over 20 years.

There are several ways to sync all of your calendar and contact information
between a Mac, Outlook on Windows, iPad Touches, iPads, and Anderoid /
iPhone smart phones. It seems that currently the best solution is to let
Google contain the master, become the hub and control all of the
sychronization. In fact, it takes most of the complexity out of this much
needed feature and once set up works extremely well and is painless from
then on.

First set up a Google account and create a basic calendar Then configure
Outlook to synch with Google calendars and contacts. Check to see if it is
synchronizing correctly both ways. Updates to your calendar or contacts in
Google should be updated fairly quicklyin Outlook, as well as Outlook
changes should show up in Google.

Now when you connect any mobile device, like an iPad or Android phone, just
enter in your Google account information and the device should get populated
with all of your data. Again, this will provide two way sychronization.

There is just so much stuff in the world that, to me, is devoid of any real
substance, value, and content that I just try to make sure that I am working
on things that matter.

Re: [Blind-Computing] How old is Grandpa

2010-09-13 Thread Annette Carr
There is a good chance that this e-mail has been floating around for quite
some time. The first mass produced TV was available in 1928. TV came to
the US in 1930. The first FCC approved US TV broadcast was in 1941. The
first TV remote was available in 1950.

If my memory serves me correctly, the first electric kitchen appliances
debuted at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 and included a dishwasher. The
first commercially made dishwasher was produced in 1913.

The bottom line here is to be sure that what you send out is true.

Let me add that the President of the United States is "only "48 years old

How Old Is Grandpa?
[]

Stay with this -- the answer is at the end. It will blow you away.

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events.
The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at
schools, the computer age, and just things in general..

The Grandfather replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before:

' television

' penicillin

' polio shots

' frozen foods

' Xerox

' contact lenses

' Frisbees and

' the pill

There were no:

' credit cards

' laser beams or

' ball-point pens

Man had not invented:

' pantyhose

' air conditioners

' dishwashers

' clothes dryers

' and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and

' man hadn't yet walked on the moon

[]

Your Grandmother and I got married first, .. ... and then lived
together..

Every family had a father and a mother.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir".
And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title,
"Sir."

We were before, computer- dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group
therapy.

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common
sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand
up and take responsibility for our actions.

Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger
privilege..

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.

Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze
started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and
weekends-not purchasing condominiums.

[]

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt,
or guys wearing earrings.

We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our
radios.

And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy
Dorsey.

If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk

The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam..

Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of.

We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10
cents.

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a
nickel.

And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough
stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, . .. . but who could afford one?
Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.

In my day:

' "grass" was mowed,

' "coke" was a cold drink,

' "pot" was something your mother cooked in and

' "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby.

' "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office,

' " chip" meant a piece of wood,

' "hardware" was found in a hardware store and

' "software" wasn't even a word.
[]

And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a
husband to have a baby.

No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation
gap. And how old do you think I am?

I bet you have this old man in mind...you are in for a shock!

Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the
same time.

Are you ready ?

This person would be only 59 years old.

Yes, Magic and ZoomText can allow you to point to text and have it spoken
out. If you do not need screen enlargement, take a look at products put out

I think there is another product called Text to Speech. These are both
products that are designed for people who have learning disabilities.
Another product to check out in this same category is WynnWizard from

Wow, I haven't thought about the original Magic screen enlargement software

Yes, I remember them, but I only used one at a typing Class for Blind
students, when going through the rehabilitation center for people who lost
their vision.
The first computer I really used for Work or home was the IBM PC.
Good old DOS was nice.
I used WordStar mostly on it, but WordPerfect also!

I used a 19 inch monitor with hardware to magnify the screen, from V-Tek
Wow, was all that stuff so primitive compared to today's stuff!
LOL!

Nice memories though, never, never thought about a "crash", it just never
happened!

Oh yes, I started out on the modified IBM terminal with a phone receiver
cradle built into it. I used it when I was in college. I was not allowed
to tell anyone that I was working remotely as that was just not really heard
of in the early 80's. If you typed in a "bad" word starting with S, it
would say sugar. If you typed in a different word, it would say fudge.

>From there I moved onto an Apple Iie with a Slot buster card and a speech
system from RC Systems. That got me through 3 years of classroom teaching,
and 2 years of graduate work. It took me 8 hours to spell check my Master's
thesis on that machine.

Next was a Toshiba 8088 running Windows 3.x with the Artic speech software
and their internal sound card. From there I moved to the Artic Transport
and then the Artic Ergo Braille.

By the way, the Apple Iie and the Toshiba 8088 are still in my basement in
an area we call the computer grave yard. It kills me to just toss them in
the garbage, even though I have no plans to turn them on again.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Excel -Counting Dates in Cells

2010-08-01 Thread Annette Carr
I knew how to do this in Excel 2003, but have not tried to do it in Office
2007. However, I think if you have the comment and the date in the same
cell, you are going to run into problems getting the formula set up. You
would be better off if you could separate that data so that the comment is
in one cell, and the date in the cell next to it.

I will be interested in seeing how this is done. I'm sure someone on this
list has the answer. If not, you should subscribe to the Office 2007 and
Screen readers Group. I do not have the subscription info here at home, as
I'm subscribed from work, but I think Denny is on this list.

Hi all,

How do you count the occurrences of dates in a range of cells with Excel
2007.
Example of data:
I have cells with data in row 6, columns A to M.
 Data goes to row 100

Some cells have dates mixed with data. E.g. 7/1/2010: Talked with Brad,
7/5/2010: Talked with Sue, 7/20/2010: Left VM and..
Other cells have this same format.

Is there a formula I can add to column N to count the occurrences of dates
in a range of cells?

I am using JAWS 11 and Excel 2007.

Thank you very much

Yes, these probes respond when they detect light and are silent when no
light is detected. There are also probes that vibrate instead of making a
sound. So if the light is blinking, the probe will respond with beeps or
vibrations in the same pattern as the flashing light. Some color
identifiers are able to work as a light probe as well.

In the case of a flashing or blinking light, does the probe give

Yes, that is so true. We have a modem from Clearwire and all five lights
need to be blinking before we have a strong signal.
Rich has a light probe and it works perfect.
We also use it for lights in the house if they are left on or not and that
probe is a life saver especially when you are paying the electric bill.

Annette,

Have you considered using a secondary sound device for your JAWS output?
For example, you can buy a Turtle Beach USB sound device and configure JAWS
to speak through that device. I'd suspect that you could then use
headphones with the USB sound device to listen to JAWS while the native
sound card would be free to process Dragon input.

The Turtle Beach USB sound device is quite reasonably priced -- around $15
or so.

Re: [Blind-Computing] entering data im excel 2007

2010-05-20 Thread Annette Carr
Interesting question. I never thought to ask it.

I have found that If I know I want to hear the result in the cell where I
just finished entering information, I press Tab and then Shift-Tab. My
reason for doing this is that when pressing Enter, you do not know where it
is going to put you. Most of the time it will just drop you to the cell
immediately below the one you were just working in. However, sometimes it
will put you elsewhere on the row below where you were working. Excel
appears to try and learn your patterns. So if you are entering data in A1,
B1, C1, and then A2, B2, C2, Excel will assume you want to place the next
set of info starting in A3.

You can also move out of a cell you are putting in data with the Down Arrow
or Right arrow.

If you are editing a cell's contents with F2, you will have to use the Tab
or Enter to get out of the cell. Arrow keys do not work because you can use
them inside the cell while you are editing the cell.

I hope this makes sense and is helpful.

Annette

Actually, it is a good idea to look at RFB but they do not have this
book. I am a member of RFB. I would highly recommend them.

God bless,
Mark

The name of the grocery store chain is Wegman's and I know they are located
in central NY. They originated in Rochester NY. Their URL is:

www.Wegmans.com

There is a chain of grocery stores in upstate NY and also in
Northern VA (they might be other places as well), who has a online shopping
list feature that does just about all that you have asked about. I do not
think that it does the price thing you mentioned, but it does arrange the
list in order of where things are located in the store.

Maybe other stores in your area offer an online feature like this.

Does anybody know of a program that will allow the user to:

1) create and print a customized shopping list.

2) create specific categories of items to serve as headings on the printed
list.

3) provide for several standing lists.

4) create a "master list" from which items will be selected.

I realize this is not a difficult project in a Word document, but I thought
a program to do this sort of thing might be convenient.

Let's offer a "for instance" here; Joe needs to print up a shopping list to
go to the hardware store. He would have created a "hardware master list" at
some previous time and he could then launch the "Shopping List Manager"
program, select the "type" of list as "hardware store" and select items from
his "master list" for hardware. The application would then have options to
save this current list and print it out.

Now, suppose Joe's wife Joanne needs to go grocery shopping; she could
launch the program and open her last grocery list, add and delete items from
a "master grocery list" and save and print the new list.

The Shopping List Manager would provide options to create various master
lists and add/delete items from each list. It would also print out clean
lists with only the items desired appearing. And each item might be
preceded by a hollow bullet so the shopper could check each item as it is
located.

And, oh yeah, the program should provide for caveats for items; i.e., "1
Pint Raspberries (unless they exceed $2.50/Pint)"
