[Blind-Computing] Question About USB Ports
Hello all. My friend is using Jaws twelve and Windows 7. She recently purchased a USB sound card 7.1 pro made by SIIG. Incidentally, this sound card came with software which she did not install because she simply wants to use this in order to separate Jaws from the output to her speakers. After then plugging a headset in to the headphone jack on the external sound card, she went to the Jaws window and then to the sound card submenu and checked the new sound card but Jaws continues to come out of her speakers rather than her headset. Since it didn't work, she unplugged the sound card from her computer and received a message that said something about her USB port not being strong enough for the device. (Sorry, I don't recall the actual wording.) My questions are these, could it be that this new sound card was designed for USB 3.0 and if so, can she purchase a USB 3.0 port and use it in her Windows 7 machine? Any help would be appreciated. Re: [Blind-Computing] Question About USB Ports
Hi Pete, 1 thing she could try is go into Sounds Audio or, whatever it's called in Windows7, make sure that her default soundcard is the 1 that came with the computer. If it by chance switched over to the USB soundcard then, she needs to change it back, apply okay it. Now, go into Jaws options, utilities, soundcard change it to the USB soundcard again. If she continues to have problems with her USB soundcard here is the soundcard I use it's only a $10.00 soundcard. Sabrent USB-SBCV External 2.1 Surround Sound Adapter - USB 2.0 Item#: (M501-2800 ) She can get this from Tiger Direct. Their Phone# is: 1-800-800-8300, prompt #1. She can give them the item number from above. Hope this helps. Take care. After it's installed, then you'll be able to easily open .WPD WordPerfect files. I'm going to create a video showing you how to do this step by step in the near future. 2. For an iPad. You may need to study the software carefully. However, one of the scanning options should be that you can choose which kind of file the information is saved to. One of those options may be .pdf. Normally, you need a full Adobe .pdf version to create a document in that format. However, I have noticed that in some generic scanner software packages, .pdf is an option. If you find that you can't save to that format, you may need a conversion program. There are quite a few out there and some may be on our home page. A word of caution might be in order here, Angelina. Not all Epson scanners are compatible with Jaws. I had to return one for that very reason. Have you had the scanner for long? If not, and you find that it doesn't work with Jaws, you might be able to return it and get an HP or some other scanner that does work with screen readers. There's a whole list of them on the Freedom Scientific site under Open Book. That's one of their scanning programs. It's quite expensive these days so I hope you can make the generic program work for you. As a last resort, there are also several reasonable scanning programs, some of which are quite workable with Jaws although not nearly as flexible as Open Book. Good luck Angelina. Re: [Blind-Computing] question on scanning documents
There are people who successfully use the mainstream Omnipage and Finereader applications directly, with jaws or window eyes and it works. Kurzweil in any event uses the penultimate versions of those two engines, but adapted so that one can effect settings you otherwise must guess much at, when using the main products. Openbook also uses a previous version of Finereader, perhaps also of omnipage, but the scans of books tend to be much slower and in general, less accurate than with Kurzweil. And the adaptive programs are always restricted by license, from incorporating the latest versions of the said mainstream programs. Re: [Blind-Computing] Question about mp3 gain
After you have added the tracks you want to modify to the list box, Press control-A to select all the tracks. Then go to the menu and select Modify Gain and then select Apply Track Gain. Re: [Blind-Computing] Question about mp3 gain
Something to note here, After you run the track analysis, you should save it in the event you want to return the files to their original state. If you don't save the analysis, you can't undo the changes you make to each track. I usually save the analysis, but it is on a copy of my files, not the originals. Re: [Blind-Computing] Question
Probably the more important question is are you having any problems with the computer? Of course you need anti-virus software but running this and that program to a certain degree is personal preference. And, if you are using a commercial software package for anti-virus, chances are that it is doing a lot of what people would tell you to do in the background. For example, I found out that my Norton 360 is defragmenting my hard drive. What would you like the computer to be doing better at? [Blind-Computing] Question about all in 1 laser printers
Hi, I currently have 2 printers, a HP 1200 laser printer which is still working fine and a Canon all in one MP780 printer of which the print heads are bad. Unfortunately Canon USA told me that print head for this particular model is no longer available. The only use I have for this printer is to scan documents and send fax. I should be able to receive a fax, but I won't be able to print it. So, I am thinking about purchasing a new all in one printer that scans, prints, copy and send/receive fax. Two problems. Is such an animal available in laser color printer or am I am going to have to stay with ink jet printers. Which laser and ink jet printers do most people recommend and which ones to stay away from as far as accessibility? Secondly, I am currently using OmniPage 15 for all my scanning. Does anyone know if this scanning software will work with the latest scanners? Any information, advice and directions will most graciously be appreciated. Thanks. Take care. Re: [Blind-Computing] Question about all in 1 laser printers
The problem with many newer all-in-one printers is that they use an LCD display screen for option selection that is not accessible. And many printers don't even have a toggle power switch anymore, just a button with an LED indicator so it can be difficult to determine whether the printer is on or off without listening for internal noise . So shop carefully. It's annoying to have to go back into my folder and get rid of all the duplicates. Thanks. For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Hi Mark, When in the Narrator window, you can simply move to the exit button, and hit the spacebar, and you will get a dialogue asking if you want to turn it off, and you will be given the choice of Yes or No. When you press Windows key + U, that opens the Ease of Access Center, and pressing Alt + N, starts Narrator. Re: [Blind-Computing] Question What kind of cord do I need
Hi Michael No, you can't use a USB cable. If you have a flash drive, or external drive, copy your files to it, and then connect the drive to the Win7 machine, and copy them in the necessary locations. Also, if the computers are networked, via ethernet cable and a router, then you can put the files in a shared folder, and transfer them over your network. Additionally, if you have a DropBox account, and you have it installed on both machines, then you can put your files in your DropBox folder on one computer, and get them from the same folder on the other machine. Re: [Blind-Computing] Question What kind of cord do I need
Hi David, I omitted that option, since it is just as easy to copy and paste. There is a cable option with Windows Easy Transfer, but it's a special USB cable from what I recall, they tend to be a little pricey. I think they are called a USB bridge cable. Hi Rick; Yes, your absolutely right, And as far as I know, You need to install software on the XP computer. However it's an option for folks. The copying to external drive is the easier way to complete the task. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Rick Justice Sent: Thursday, December 01, 2011 7:38 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Question What kind of cord do I need Hi David, I omitted that option, since it is just as easy to copy and paste. [Blind-Computing] question about using outlook with imap
Hello all. I was tired of having to go on to the gmail website and check for spam emails all the time. I have it set up as imap now. I think I kind of understand the folder structure but it seems to be not easy to delete emails from the server. ai also don't know how to delete emails from the spam folder. Is there something I need to do to download them before I can get rid of them. I also see an all mail folder with tons of emails in there too. Can I get rid of that somehow? [Blind-Computing] question for those of you who have tried the Mac computer, or indeed use one now.
Does the screen reader that Mac uses, work better than jaws, or is just as good, or not quite as good? I'm contemplating switching to a Mac, but can see no point, if the screen reader, doesn't read the internet as well, or anything else. I also know, it's natural for one to defend their choice for things, but objectively, does the screen reader work as well as jaws or better? And if better, in what way? Re: [Blind-Computing] question for those of you who have tried the Mac computer, or indeed use one now.
Well, to say it's better is not a fair statement. Voice over, the screen reader for the mac is very good! But it all depends on your preference. I've been using a mac for about 2 months, and love it. The only down fall for me is the internet But that's all suppose to change with the release of lion today is suppose to take care of all of that. With letter navigation on the web, and the launch pad on the doc. I run windows virtually on my mac, but only do that so I can still use the Microsoft suite, but use my mac for everything else. I use my mac cold turkey for the first month so I could get use to it all at once without trying to jump to windows when I got frustrated with the mac. But I am not sorry I made the switch. The difference between voice over and jaws is night and day. Voice over is a great alternative, and will be equal to jaws one day, but in my opinion, it's not quite there yet.
