Hello Achim! Rybka is a UCI chess engine programmed by International Master Vasik Rajlich. What chess has to do with backgammon? This strikes me as an excuse Both the World Computer Chess Championship and the Computer Olympiade are organized by ICGA. Also the same rules regarding the orginality of software apply to both afaik. not to participate. Gnu must overcome the trauma caused by the successive wins of bgblitz. Gnu needs to give itself another chance. As I already said, feel free to participate. I just decided for _myself_ not for GNU Backgammon. I seem to recall now the pango issue may have been because I was building into a path that has GnuBG.app in the middle of it (/Applications/GnuBG.app/Contents/MacOS/fink). I think there was a SED bug in a script that incorrectly transforms the .a in the middle to something else (The intent was that they were trying to rename some files with .a extensions to .la . The manual (former info files) definitely needs a lot of work. The wiki should be for plain users, maybe we make some announcements here and there. I suggest you begin with Albert Silvers All about Gnu. Maybe you look for misspellings and wrong phrases. Also make a note where (in your opinion) his document could be extended. It should work I guess, unless you have incompatible versions. If it is a one-time problem you could dump the database as text on one computer and import the text file on the other. If you want true synchronization you are probably better of using a real database server like mysql. One step further: 1. With no existing database gnubg creates an empty file after relational test but complains (No game) relational test Database table check failed! The table gnubg.match is missing. (No game) 2. When running python database.py or (whithin gnubg) load python database.py I get no output at all. 3. The table gnubg.match is missing. So I took the windows database, renamed it and gnubg was satisfied. But when I try a sqlite command like sqlite ace.db .dump it complains Unable to open database ace.db. file is encrypted or is not a database. * Christian Anthon [EMAIL PROTECTED] [071113 17:32]: Ian Shaw wrote: I went to the home page just now and got some message in German (I think) before getting onto the site proper. yes it has been hacked... by achim though. The story is the following, According to plans of the German parties CDU, CSU and SPD, from 2008 onwards it will be possible to trace who has contacted whom via telephone, mobile phone or e-mail for a period of six months. In the case of mobile calls or text messages via mobile phone, the user's location will also be logged. Anonymising services will be prohibited. So a lot of German sites has put up this notice prior to entering the actual site. Similar to what was done to convince lawmakers not to pass laws allowing software patents. Exactly! Perhaps it's worth mentioning that this passed law is based on a EU guideline which forces all members of the EU to convert the content of the guideline into national law. Also the UK ;-). Regarding the use of the www it's also not clear, whether only pure connection data (ISP - customer) or also e.g. http connections will be saved. The guideline and the German law is pretty (intentionally?!) blurred. An additonal note: There will be another contract between 52 countries called Cybercrime-Convention. Part of the contract will be the exchange of data (including the above mentioned data retention). 1984 is history! But I'll check whether there is an English version of this protest note. Re: [Bug-gnubg] cause of the partygammon import bug
* Misja Alma [EMAIL PROTECTED] [070909 18:06]: Hi, Despite of my limited knowledge of C (My profession is Java programmer) I think I found the cause and the location of the PartyGammon bug. It is at the lines 3523 and 3524 (those were the line numbers in the snapshot of 6-9-2007) of the file import.c, in the procedure ConvertPartyGammonFileToMat. The new matchscores are calculated here by adding pGame.s1 and pGame.s2 to the old scores. However, pGame.s1 and s2 contain absolute matchscores, not the points won. This explains why the first game of the match is always imported correctly, the old scores were still zero so the absolute score is also the difference. So the lines 3523 and 3524 should be: s1 = pGame-s1; s2 = pGame-s2; I changed this at my own pc and now the import works. I've commited your fix at the cvs. Thanks Misja. Re: [Bug-gnubg] Double Decisions
* Peter Carlson [EMAIL PROTECTED] [070822 15:23]: I dont really have any precise data. It's more of a feeling. Obviously if gnu thinks it is in a losing position it wont offer a double. I guess what my main point was that once gnu offers, if you press hint, the hint will 75% of the time - based upon actual One of the weird things a neural net like gnubg is that these bots offer nearly perfect doubles. If you are offered a double and the bot didn't roll a marketloser before you can almost always be sure it's a close take, otherwise a pass. game playing - advise you to take the double. Then almost 100% of the time I'll lose, following the hints for every play. For example: gnu offers double hint says take, so I take gnu rolls and plays I roll and press hint and I have *usually* less then 20% chance of winning. I follow each hint for every roll and I end up losing. So again the real question is would gnu offer a double if it didn't think it was in a significantly better position to win. And if it is in a better position to win, which I have to believe it is, why would the hint offer to take? If you use hint all the time this is a good way to see how a certain position develops. This will help your understanding of the game. That was the good news. Now to the bad news: Better do a rollout and let the computer play both sides. If you really want meaningful numbers you need _at least_ 108 games (from the good old days where rollouts were performed on a real backgammon board), better 1296. So play a certain position 1296 times, record every result and then come back. Ciao Achim ___ Bug-gnubg mailing list Bug-gnubg@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-gnubg

It looks like GNU Backgammon beats them all. Is that the right interpretation? This was about the result I would expect in a match series. The point is that the positions where GNU Backgammon outperforms Snowie is more frequent than the positions where Snowie outperforms GNU Backgammon. Would anyone estimate the standard deviation of these numbers? If sqrt(a*b/1000) is correct than it's: std.err sigma confidence gnubg/bgb= 15.79 2.28 == 98,8% gnubg/snowie = 15.81 1.39 == 91,8% gnubg/jelly = 15.5311.98 == 100,0% (well, nearly) snowie/bgb = 15.81 0.51 == 69,5% snowie/jelly = 15.64 9.21 == 100,0% bgb/jelly= 15.77 4.31 == 100,0% So we can be quite sure that jellyfish will be beat by all other bots, we can be quite confident that gnubg is better than bgb, we can be a little confident that gnubg is better than snowie. * Joseph Heled [EMAIL PROTECTED] [070705 11:14]: With gnubg/Jelly we have p = .593 (estimated win percentage) and N = 1000. The 95% confidence interval is [.562,.623], so we can be sure gnubg is better. gnubg/bgb p=.519 and the interval is [.487,.55] so you can't say gnubg is better than any of the others. I understand your calculation, but what is wrong with mine? I took the binominal distribution and my numbers seem to be correct, aren't they? sqrt(519*481/1000) = sqrt(249,639) = 15.799 actual result(+38)/sigma(15.799) = 2.4 (oops, in my first calculation I took +36, damn). 2.4 --- 99.18% confidence that the same set of 1000 25p matches will produce a win for gnubg. I guess I got it now. I probably was mislead by an article of Chuck Bower in GOL were he described std.err as sqrt(a*b/1000) and sigma as (a-b)/std.err (which is probably wrong). I just had a chat with Douglas Zare. He says that sigma should be 0.5(a-b)/std.error. In other words, don't take the difference between both bots, but between a bot and the mean (which is 500 here). If that's correct - I'm not sure and a bit puzzled now - we get the following numbers: gnu/jelly 5.88100.0% gnu/snowie 0.69 51.0% gnu/bgb 1.20 77.0% bgb/jelly 2.15 96.8% bgb/snowie 0.25 19.7% snowie/jelly4.56100.0% This definitely makes more sense. This is like a tennis match between two players. I talk about the likelihood of a bot being better compared to another bot in a contest, where both bots play each other _and_ two other bots. This is like a football league. I want to know, whether Bayern Munich is signifant better than Werder Bremen in case Bayern has scored 72 out of 102 points and Werder has scored only 59 in the same amount of 34 games. No matter how the direct matches were Bayern - Bremen 6:0; 6:0 or 0:6; 2-1 or whatever. Even if two teams play 1:1 and 2:2 within a season it might be that one team scores _significant_ more points than the other and also receives the title and the cup. Same occurs in this bot shootout. Gnubg scored 1623, bgblitz 1519. The direct set of 1000 matches has no statistical meaning. The difference of 104 point might have. Do you see the point now? Why? Question 2: It differs! Why? I expected the same numbers because of the same seed. Assumption 1: The rollout results themselves seem to be reliable (well, somehow), but I'll crosscheck this with other positions also. Assumption 2: Richard Stallman did issue the blessing on gnubg after we shifted to GPLv3 ;-). If someone wants to debug this, I have saved all rollouts and results. Ciao Achim PS.
