[KCFusion] Meeting Announcement - Hal Helms - Wednesday the 24th

2003-09-17 Thread Ryan Hartwich
Coming next Wednesday, September 24th at 6pm... Hal Helms
(www.halhelms.com)!

Hal will be discussing ColdFusion CFCs and Mach-II (www.mach-ii.com) with
possibly a touch of object oriented design and Fusebox (www.fusebox.org)
(since they are intrinsically related).

Mach-II is a web-application framework focused on easing software
development and maintenance. CFCs are ColdFusion Components and are a way
of coding functions/methods in ColdFusion MX.

Hal Helms and Ben Edwards created and train programmers in the Mach-II
web-application framework. Both will be in attendance at our meeting (Ben
recently moved back to KC, and Hal is in town for other business purposes).

Location: Centriq University, 7950 College Boulevard, Overland Park, KS
66210. Maps available on our website at www.kcfusion.org

Time: Arrive by 6pm, presentation 6-7, Q&A for 15 minutes or so.

Directions to Centriq: Exit I-435 at Metcalf, go south on Metcalf to College
Boulevard. Turn right (west) and go 1/2 mile to Lamar. Turn right (north) on
Lamar and turn left immediately at 110th street. Go 100 feet and turn left
into the parking lot. Park in back of the 'Mid-America Spine' building and
come in the student entrance.

Dinner: We will adjourn the meeting about 7:15 and depart for Chipolte
(www.chipotle.com) for a casual dinner and networking. Chipotle - Corp
Woods, 9900 College Blvd, 913-469-6620. Chipolte is about 1 mile west of
Centriq, across the street from the Doubletree Hotel. Chipolte serves large
burritos & tacos, Coke & beer.

RSVPs are not required but appreciated, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A $2 donation to support the user group is strongly requested...

Thanks go to Centriq University (www.centriq.com) for sharing their offices

[KCFusion] Meeting Results

2003-09-03 Thread Ryan Hartwich
I would like to thank everyone who came out tonight for the meetings.
Between the two locations we had roughly 90 (38 & 52) people attend!

The winner at UMKC of the copy of Studio MX 2004 was Jeff Brown! For those
of you at Centriq/OP, please forgive us for the confusion on your raffle. I
will collect the paper work in the next two days and a winner will be
randomly selected and announced via email and website in the next 2-3 days.

Please show your support of the user group meetings and click through the
following two links:
http://www.macromedia.com/go/mx2004_live (to buy or consider buying)
& http://www.macromedia.com/special/usergroups/ (to show your support in
general)

I would like to thank the following individuals for their direct assistance
in setting this up:

Charmaine Keller-Hodge, Michael Falkner, David Stutler, Casey Hill, Russell
Walker, Jim Pickering, Ron Ramphal.

I will try and post copies of the handouts, some survey results, etc. on the
website in the next day or two.

Stay tuned for future user group meetings and learning/networking
opportunities,
Ryan Hartwich

[KCFusion] Meeting results

2002-07-11 Thread Ryan Hartwich

KCFusion,

Our user group meeting last night was a success! Thanks again to Rick
& Rachel Nielsen of Mach 10 Design (www.mach10design.com) for
presenting.

We had a small group of participants (some driving in from Topeka &
Lawrence) eager to learn and discuss their coding techniques. This
meeting combined a mixture of CF & HTML/Dreamweaver tricks to help
make your websites easier to build and maintain. We learned how to
utilize style sheets in MX, prevent a few cross browser compatibility
problems, and other useful solutions, including a set of handouts
detailing how to mimic pixel wide borders on your sites.

For those of you concerned about not being an expert, this meeting
required NO CF experience and only an understanding of basic html
coding. Please join us in the future for the camaraderie and
learning. The meetings are informal and everyone participates.

Ryan

Mark,

Upcoming Topic? It depends...what would you like to discuss/present :-)

Seriously. It is not necessary/possible to have external speakers at
all meetings. A few months ago I spent a few hours one day and found
some custom tags and insightful pieces of code I had created at work,
put them together into a 15 page handout, made a few copies and we spent
well over an hour discussing them. They included a modification from
the CF Developers Journal of how to see who is online.

Here is a brief list of what we discussed: (powerpoint presentation
available upon request)

CFHTTP example - local machine connecting to SSL encrypted site using

Tracking the IP # of all 'active' sessions
Viewing Application/Session variables
Deleting all session variables
2 XML examples using MS XML Parser
1 SOAP example using MS SOAP Toolkit

In direct answer to your question: We do not at this time have any
content scheduled for our meeting tomorrow. Hopefully a few of us will
come up with some brief topics to discuss prior to tomorrow evening.

Jodi,
A few year back, Robin Greenhagen, Bryan LaPlante, and Ron Hornbaker
helped to form the user group. When I started attending about a
year
and a half ago we had a reasonably good turnout that varied from 8
to 30
depending on the speaker and the subject matter. We have had one of
the
original JRUN developers come speak, Ben Forta (CF Evangelist for
Allaire/Macromedia), and a few times a locally based employee of
Allaire
in their consulting arm.
Lately we have had smaller meetings with more ad-hoc based
presentations. Some of these presentations have been on security,
project development cost estimation, examples of coding, etc.
After/during most of the presentations, we spend time discussing
problems individuals are having and how to solve them (Q&A).
When I first attended I was a bit intimidated by the others since I
believed my skills were inferior to the rest. I have been
pleasantly
surprised to find that this is not the case. Most people have
experience in only a few areas of CF development and not in others,
so
while you may be weaker than some in say, form validation, someone
else
may have security, report generation, fusebox, etc.
The meetings are a good, informal way of meeting others in the
community, learning more about CF, and how local businesses use it.
You should consider giving it a try. Bring your questions, ideas,
and
anything you want to contribute to the group.
Ryan

Park for free in the lot across the street from the admin building. Go up
the steps and take stairs or elevator to the second floor. We're in a
meeting room along the west side. Look for the sign. And we'll be looking
for anyone who seems lost.

I admit to completely forgetting about the meeting this month...sorry.

I think I can put a few brief things together however. I have been
reading a few of the chapters on XML and SOAP in the new Professional
ColdFusion 5.0 book. If people are interested, here are a few ideas
that we can discuss:

Concept behind XML & SOAP
Sample implementation of SOAP using both ASP & CF, derived from source
code in the box above.
A simple way of seeing a listing of active sessions on your server as
well as running a reverse DNS lookup on them (source code available)
A simple way to add session variable information to the bottom of your
CF pages while debugging (source code available)

I can also bring my copy of the book as well as a few issues (including
this month) of ColdFusion Developer's Journal for people to look at.

Anyone interested?

RE: [KCFusion] meeting?

2001-08-14 Thread Ryan Hartwich

RE: [KCFusion] Meeting

2001-07-09 Thread mark . e . boles

It is true that KCFUSION brings value to the group both in networking
and tuning your skillset. A lack of content for meetings is a result of
a lack of participation on the part of its members. If we as a group do
not voice or wants, they will never be. I have attempted to do my part
by bringing content to the meeting. We all need to step up. Everyone
can take enough time to learn 1 thing to present 1 time a year.

I have identified a couple thoughts to ponder:
1. Is there an archive that lists what was covered on each night and
the presenter? That way if I miss a meeting (like I did last Monday) I
can still benefit by learning on my own time. In addition I would start
to get a working knowledge of which persons are more apt in which
expertise. I would still like to gain more knowledge on how to bid
jobs.

2. Would it be advantageous to put together a list identifying the
members and individual skills to draw on? For instance I am best at
Oracle related issues. The questions should always be directed at the
group first. However sometimes (due to email volume) I place KCFUSION
emails in my KCFUSION and may not actually read them for a day or two.
That way someone could follow up with me if a question was actually
directed in my area of expertise.

3. We could actually just start covering CF as a whole from start to
finish making escalated issues a priority. So CF would be treated like
a class with many interruptions. That way we always have pertinent CF
content to cover. There are always things we miss when learning a
language. Going through a curriculum styled class path (pardon the
verbiage) would facilitate an effective learning format.

And Yes, I am willing to assist in backing up my suggestions. I have
already, and I will continue to support this group that I believe in. I
have received countless assistance and it is only fair to give back.

In regard to afternoon meetings, I would be unable to schedule afternoon
meetings. In addition, I do not believe that afternoon meetings would be
a healthy solution to the current problem

Bryan,

I'm a lurker/occasional poster, and except for the Forta visit, I
haven't
attended any of the meetings. There are two recognized values of
meeting
with a professional group. One is for profession-specific enrichment.
The
other is for networking.

Could it be that the CF Developers in this area have access to ample
resources already, and so they are not seeking out new resources (such
as
attending KCFusion meetings)? I'm not sure that anyone can ever do 'too
much' networking, but people may not value the networking potential of
the
KCFusion meetings enough to take an entire evening out of their
schedule.

So that I don't offer critique without some constructive suggestion,
here's
my thought. I would be more inclined to attend an afternoon meeting. I
would
receive the double-benefit of being on 'company-time' and also be
developing
my skills and networking with other professionals.

Generally speaking, organizations increase participation by lowering
costs
and/or increasing benefits. I propose that KCFusion reduce what it
would
'cost' me to attend by moving the meeting to an afternoon time slot.

2001-07-09 Thread Keith Purtell

The only reason I'm not at more meetings is that I'm buried in work. My most
consistent participation in any technical/professional group is via email
list, for the aforementioned reason. I can't think of a flaw in how KC
Fusion is set up, but many of the presentations seem too advanced. Talk
about Java Beans, C+, VB, etc. goes right over my head. It's kind of a
bummer to be sitting there just looking polite/interested until the meeting
is over.

Oh, and there's no way I could make it to an afternoon meeting.

community have been faced with and thus a subject for the meeting. I don't
think that I can stand up once a month and entertain you, so the alternative
is to let the group know if there is anything that you need help with. Some
one mentioned that the group seems to be more responsive to the subject of
Java (integration with CF, JRun, how to write a JavaBean) and so on, if that
is what everyone is interested in then lets do it.

If I don't get at least 10 responses about covering some subject I will call
Ron Ramphal and tell him to let our meeting room go to some other group that

Daryl,

*Your idea on CFFLUSH would be good.
*I have also heard a few others ask about using CFGRAPH (brief demo would be
nice).
*I am interested in hearing about the functionality of connecting Flash &
CF/databases. More specifically, can/how does Flash on the client side
allow dynamic access to a database and CF on the server side. What are some
of the pros/cons and limitations.

Thanks,

One thing that is true about Kansas city is that we are a head quarter town.
Companies here are under a great deal of pressure to keep up with current
technology and Java seems to be the choice for building new systems or
upgrading legacy systems. Cold Fusion does not have as many customers here
as they do in Dallas, Chicago, St. Louis and other similar sized towns. That
is why I say let's talk about what every we want to but still give all the
support to our CF developers that they need.

I like your idea about getting paid to go to the meetings. There has been
some talk at Macromedia about a new form of user group that exists inside
the walls of a company. As more information develops on the resources that
will be available to a company that wants to start such a group I will
forward that information to the group.

Re: [KCFusion] Meeting

2001-07-09 Thread Bryan LaPlante

Ok, there are two new links at http://www.kcfusion.org . The Common Function
Library Project link points to the site created by Raymond Camden and Rob
Brooks-Bilson. I down loaded all of the user defined functions that they
have assembled on their site and created a custom tag that will load up user
defined functions into the scope of your choice (application if you want to
use them for the life of the application respectively). The other link in
the download section called Packaging UDF's contains the vtm editors for
each package and a tutorial.htm that shows how the tag was built.

Down load the zip file and read the doc and then lets discuss it online.

RE: [KCFusion] Meeting

2001-07-09 Thread Cox, Billy

Bryan,

I'm a lurker/occasional poster, and except for the Forta visit, I haven't
attended any of the meetings. There are two recognized values of meeting
with a professional group. One is for profession-specific enrichment. The
other is for networking.

Could it be that the CF Developers in this area have access to ample
resources already, and so they are not seeking out new resources (such as
attending KCFusion meetings)? I'm not sure that anyone can ever do 'too
much' networking, but people may not value the networking potential of the
KCFusion meetings enough to take an entire evening out of their schedule.

Any one that wants to give a presentation or suggest a focus for a meeting
all you have to do is email one of the directors and we will give you any
help you need to find answers to your issues. If any of us would do that
then once a month there would be some idea of common issues that the
community have been faced with and thus a subject for the meeting. I don't
think that I can stand up once a month and entertain you, so the alternative
is to let the group know if there is anything that you need help with. Some
one mentioned that the group seems to be more responsive to the subject of
Java (integration with CF, JRun, how to write a JavaBean) and so on, if that
is what everyone is interested in then lets do it.

If I don't get at least 10 responses about covering some subject I will call
Ron Ramphal and tell him to let our meeting room go to some other group that
might need it.

[KCFusion] Meeting

2001-07-09 Thread Bryan LaPlante

I see that Ryan has been trying to get some response from the group about
what your interests are. I have been involved with this group for about a
year now and I have noticed that we are a very quiet group. I don't know if
that means that we are all CF guru's or if it means that the majority of our
day is spent dealing with other technologies that consume our time and
interests. I remember when I first started in IT my first language was Java.
I was about to jump off the nearest cliff for the lack of resources that
were available to me. After getting a handle on Internet technologies I
wanted to help others get through the experience of learning a new language.

There are about 10 core people that are always ready to help others in this
group and I bet they had a similar experience to mine when they were
starting out. It would be kind of nice if we could all respond to them when
they ask us if there is anything we would like to talk about. I am not
complaining about meeting attendance or the lack of speakers but in the
spirit of the way Ron Hornbaker started this group we should be free to talk
about any kind of technology that a CF developer is faced with.

Any one that wants to give a presentation or suggest a focus for a meeting
all you have to do is email one of the directors and we will give you any
help you need to find answers to your issues. If any of us would do that

RE: [KCFusion] Meeting last night

2001-06-13 Thread Oak Chantosa

Everyone,

Oak here. Turnout was small last night, but Girish's presentation was a
knockout! For those of you that missed it, four Allaire T-shirts and a
handful of pens were given out. Not many left, so come and get them at
the meetings while they're hot (I KNOW what you guys are doing --
waiting for the new Macromedia stuff!)

If I remember correctly, the product discussed was CostXpert, at
http://www.costxpert.com

Can we get a copy of that PowerPoint presentation posted on the list?

[KCFusion] Meeting tonight

2001-06-12 Thread Bryan LaPlante

Hey gang,

Some work related things have come up and I have to go out of town. I am
sorry to be missing the meeting tonight as I know that tonight's subject
would benefit me a great deal in my own business. Ron Ramphal tells me that
the meeting room is that one at the far north side of the building on the
second floor of the umkc administration building.

See ya next month.

Folks,

Just to give you a little clearer idea -

I was planning to present estimation of cost and schedule for software
projects
(how it is done at large organizations such as IBM). We can also compare
Cold
Fusion against other technologies because development is dependent on the
language you use for doing the project. I was thinking of specifically
doing
web projects due to nature of our group. It will take about an hour or so.

I am still willing to do it, although at the last minute it is difficult to
put
together a proper presentation. But, I do need to know early enough (else
we
can do some other time if there is still interest).

Thanks!

[KCFusion] Meeting last night

2001-01-10 Thread Bryan LaPlante

Hey gang,

Good meeting last night, lots of great idea's. I am pretty pumped about the
idea of generating revenue for the group. I am doing some research on the
subjects of your suggestions and looking over and cleaning up the code for
our survey system. In a couple of days I will have put together something we
can use to commit our idea's to a database and keep track of what we are
doing. In the mean time I have already received some email on the
suggestions that were made last night, if all of you that had idea's could
give me a short description that I can use in the survey that would be much
appreciated. Just email it to me off list.

meeting virtually automatic. I believe the group needs a project (that
belongs to the KCFusion Group). It should be done from design to
implementation... you get my point.

Jamie (Old/beginner)

Re: [KCFusion] meeting

2001-01-08 Thread Bryan LaPlante

In the last couple of month I have been building applications that have
caused me to have to dig into almost every area of CF. The most recent
however is the Cold Fusion security model. I think I have some
recommendations as to how to use it in an application effectively. Last
month I talked about Verity collections and I have some code example on the
matter of writing to and reading from the registry.
I think the only subject I have not really approached is clustering and
regular expression in CF. I would love to hear someone talk on those
subjects. Anybody?

What are the different topics you have? I'm not sure if I can make it, so I

It's Robin's turn. Seriously, it'd be nice to have someone from
Greensoft talk about building a scalable site with clustering of both
webservers and SQL servers... if not this month, some month soon.

I just got done building the little Fuselet for Ben Forta's tip-of-the-day
wddx feed (see it at http://kcfusion.org) which I could talk about, but I
think everyone is Fuselet-ed out by now. :)

Topic suggestions from the list would be appreciated; maybe we can come up
with something.

Ron,

No...please, nothing fun, interesting, or useful please! I won't be able to
attend and would prefer not to miss anything important. Why don't you cover
some arcane topic like adding single digit base ten integers together?

I should make it. Hey, how 'bout I share my fusebox-style methodology
adapted for ASP? :) (Just kidding, I know that's pure heresy.)

Seriously, though, learning ASP has really helped my CF technique, too. And
made me wish for real user-defined functions and response buffers.

I'd like to learn more about scaling up with Cluster Cats and SQL7
redundancy, actually... anyone from Greensoft care to step forward? I know
you guys know that stuff.
