Thanks for all the answers.

BTW, is Unicode where each character is represented by a byte of data and
non-Unicode where each character is represented by two bytes? (I'm just
trying to make sense of what I read in another thread).

If so, I guess you just halve the figure given for the numbers of two-byte
characters... right?

As to if CF will work on it, I was pointed to this comparison table,

Structure in Application Scope

2000-10-25 Thread David

Hi,

I was trying out the user login tutorial in CFVault with a minor alteration,
using client variables instead of session variables. But I kept encountering
the following error on the initial log in:
An error occurred while evaluating the expression:

 Application.UsersLoggedin["#client.UserID#"].TimeCreated = Now()
The member operator(.) can only be applied to a struct object. The provided
object "Application.UsersLoggedin" is not a structin dimension 1.
Consequently, member "TIMECREATED" cannot be assigned to.
But when I refresh the page, the error was removed and I got logged in! Any
suggestions?

Thank you.
David

I love www.shanje.com. SQL Server, unlimited domains, mail management per
domain, unlimited ODBC sources, ftp accounts, password protected
directories, and a web control panel handles it all - even adding new SQL
Server databases. All for $50 a month. They have a basic account (no SQL
Server, etc) for less.

I don't work for shanje :-)

Help with ArraySum

2000-10-25 Thread Paul Sinclair

I'm setting an array and trying to get the sum of the values. The array is
populated from the contents of a "Number" field in an MSAccess table. The
error I get is:

"In function ArraySum the element at position 1 is not a real value. Please
make sure that the function's first argument contains only real values"

When I convert the array to a list, it outputs the following as the contents
of the array:

3.0,2.0,0.0,3.5,0.5,0.0,1.0,0.0,3.0,2.0,2.0,4.5,3.0,0.0,0.0,6.0,4.5,9.0,0.0,
3.0,

What might be the trouble?

Since you're in Australia you should check out WebCentral - I have used
their Premier ColdFusion service and it is *superb* - but you pay for it at
AUD$600-odd per month. They'll let you install custom COM objects and CFX
tags on the server and the support is absolutely top-notch with extremely
fast priority support. Server is extremely reliable and the speed is
excellent. The reason it's so expensive is that they gurantee only 6 sites
per server. They also have a cheaper shared service for $77 per month - I
haven't used it yet but I will in the future. (it's called Enterprise CF or
something)

Logicworld is a joke - I have my personal site with them for cost reasons
but they go down every couple of weeks (completely - mail servers, all their
hosted sites, everything) and they also run MSFTP which is total junk.

SPARC Solaris site frustrated with ColdFusion

2000-10-25 Thread Larry W. Virden

We're a SPARC Solaris site and our admins are growing tired of not getting
patches to fix the multitude of bugs we encounter using ColdFusion server
on our systems. We seldom get solutions to the problems we encounter with
the hanging servers, crashing servers, etc.

What are other Solaris shops doing? Are you moving to other products,
paying more support money , or just doing without web development, or
what?

JavaScript 'this' question

2000-10-25 Thread Hays, Duncan

I want to be able pass a validated value back to a form without explicitly
assigning the value in JS and I can't figure it out or even whether it can
be done. Something like:

Then in js have:

function validate(obj){
if (document.formName.obj.value == "field1"){
document.formName.ojb.value = 1;
}
else{
document.formName.obj.value = 2;
}
}

When I do this I get errors saying that "document.formName.obj has no
properties".

Thanks

2000-10-25 Thread Rosa, Issac

I have a form with a Required Text Box using CFFORM. Can someone tell me
why I'm processing the action form instead of getting an error from the
client-side script that is being generated when I submit a blank text box?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Slightly OT: Cable Modem and TZO -- Thanks for your input

2000-10-25 Thread Debbie McDaniel

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the information. Like many of you, I'm simply looking to host a
site for development purposes and to showcase some of the work I have done
on my own (outside of my day job). I am definitely not looking to host a
website that would get a lot of hits. Like DynIP, TZO is an Internet Name
server (DNS server) for people with changing
Internet addresses (as with a Cable Modem). I was just curious if anyone has
used this service and if it was possible to "host" your own site at home
with a cable modem.

Once again, thanks for the info and insight!

Deb

Duncan,

Kill the document.formName. Instead of...

document.formName.obj.value

Just use...

obj.value

Subject: JavaScript 'this' question

I want to be able pass a validated value back to a form without explicitly
assigning the value in JS and I can't figure it out or even whether it can
be done. Something like:

Then in js have:

function validate(obj){
if (document.formName.obj.value == "field1"){
document.formName.ojb.value = 1;
}
else{
document.formName.obj.value = 2;
}
}

When I do this I get errors saying that "document.formName.obj has no
properties".

Thanks

RDS & ColdFusion Studio Problem

2000-10-25 Thread Stone, Jeff

I am having a problem with the RDS and Save As functions in ColdFusion
Studio 4.5.1 on one of my developer's machines. After I have created the
first few lines of a document, and I attempt to save it to one of my offsite
development servers, the "Allaire FTP & RDS" option does not show up in the
folder (or "Look-in") drop-down list at the top of the Save As dialog
window.

I have two developers and myself, and we are all running the same OS
(Windows NT 4.0), Service Pack (6A) and version of Studio (4.5.1). On my
machine and my other developer's machine, we can save to the servers using
RDS from within Studio without a problem. However, my other developer has
to use a third-party FTP program to FTP her local files up to the server.

I have been told that RDS uses Internet Explorer to carry out it's work.
So, we tried installing a 4.0 and the 5.5 version of IE without any success.
We have tried uninstalling Studio and reinstalling it. Nothing seems to be
working. I thought maybe someone else has run into this problem before and
may have possibly found a solution.

Hoping for some guidance,

give them all the same name. any checked will be returned as members of a

Cferror problems

2000-10-25 Thread W Luke

Hi, I'm trying to write a web mail email program and I'm having some trouble
dealing with errors and any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is what my getMail template does:-
-CFPOP's the mail from the server
-Then using CFOUTPUT goes through the returned query and trys to insert the
mails into a database to be read later
-Should an error occur it is caught in a CFCATCH and using CFMAIL, messages
are sent to the postmaster etc

This template is not seen by the user but runs as a scheduled task in the
background. Through out the code though progress messages are sent to the
screen so that if run manually I can see what is happening

What I want to do though is to have the choice of viewing the error
diagnostics in the CFCATCH.

I can get it so that the getMail template halts at the error using the
CFERROR tag and shows the error in a new template but this stops the getMail
template - which is not good because this will stop other mail being
delivered.
What I'd like is to catch the error and then have a link that I can follow,
should I wish, to view the error diagnostics on a seperate page. Even better
would be to view it on the same page but I can't figure this out either

I apologise for this being so verbose but I'm kinda stumped with it. Thank
you in advance for any help

Will

RE: checkboxes

2000-10-25 Thread Randy Adkins

You can use radio buttons to better do what you wish.

Something like:

This way when the 2nd one is checked the first one
becomes 'unchecked'. Thus the value is now 2.

If you must use check boxes, I would do something like:

Only problem is when you test to see if thisbox1 isdefined
and insert it into the DB, what happens is if both
box 1 and 2 was checked. Thus I would use the radio buttons.

why I'm processing the action form instead of getting an error from the

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello
It does look wrong - broken lines all the way down the page.

I think it's the background images in the top row of the table. Try taking
them out of the background and just putting them into the cells, combining
them with the images which are there.

Your tables are all wrong - you have a lot of incorrectly nested tags.
Netscape does not like a load of things - esp. these. IE has become a lot
more forgiving (which in turn breeds lapses of concentration and effort when
it comes to building web pages)

If you have known bugs in CF 4.x (well, not *if*), why would you knowingly
release the next major revision without correcting them Are you stating
that unless someone "votes" to remove a bug, we can expect to see it
perpetuated in the next release? Do bug fixes have that low of a priority

re: html ideas on this -

Having looked through your code - you have fallen into a trap many people
get trapped in at some poing of their HTML coding life (mostly novices ;-)
of merging cells when you don't need to. Try to nest your tables within
each other with no overlapping cells etc... I am not even sure that a BG can
be applied with regards to NN.

Personally I would have made 1 table with 3 columns as the container, and
then used another table for the inner/data part of your resume - avoiding
any issues with browser defficiencies!!!

Hi Jeff,
I have that same problem and in fact have reported it to Allaire. They
were unable to come up with a solution and after a few weeks
put the call into a "bug report".
I have not heard anything from them since.
I do not have IE running at as as we are not an IE shop.

Sorry that I can't offer any bright rays of hope for a solution.
I am currently using Samba to map a drive to my Unix server since
FTP&RDS doesn't work.

If there are multiple copies of IE open, how does Windows decide which one
to use when you click on a link in Outlook?

If the users computer could be configured, is there a way to say always open

Okay have a squiz at the code below. By building a table this way you can
create individual 'blocks' of data that can be manipulated individually
without arsing up the main table - as it always remains xternal to the inner
development.

RE: RDS & ColdFusion Studio Problem

2000-10-25 Thread Simon Horwith

I recently had studio (4.5.2 beta 2) completely erase all the contents of a
file the result of 3 days of work. No fun losing 3 days like that, but
what can you do. If you're using a beta product and are concerned about the
potential for these sort of occasional mishaps, stop using a beta version.
I know some people who rolled their studios back to 4.0.1, because it was a
very stable version compared to recent builds. Anyway, I figure studio's
features have still saved me more time than they've cost me, all in all.

RE: RDS & ColdFusion Studio Problem

2000-10-25 Thread Simon Halcrow

I'm still using Studio 4.5 and it quite often wipes my CFM files for me...

I can happily work on a file for a few hours, maybe even a couple of days -
fine. I'lll open the file later to make a quick one-line change,
save the file - and hey presto: CF tells me:

Cannot process files with Zero length.

What it actually means - as you probably know - is that instead of saving
the content of the file - it actually saves naff all and truncates the file
down to zero bytes.

Cheers Studio. Nice one.

I still get the connection error. What would I need to check in my firewall

Hello, I am unable to use cfhttp. For a while, I was getting a "Connection
Failure" error and so I read that if I added a / to the end it might work.
Now I am getting the ie "This page cannot be displayed" page. Any
suggestions?

THanks,

RE: RDS & ColdFusion Studio Problem

2000-10-25 Thread Eron Cohen

That happened to me too Simon. I feel your pain. I finally gave up after
the second time I lost work. But that's the way it goes when you use beta.
I was really anxious to give it a whirl because of all the things they've
improved (like the new FTP engine) but it looks like they have to do some
more work before this one's going to be ready to go.

Anyone wishing to try it, or see success or bug reports can go to
beta.allaire.com and look at the release notes and the forum discussions.

I depend on RDS to work from home and I really hope that Allaire gets some
of the kinks worked out. Its already amazing that they have something like
this at all. And although, even previous versions of CF Studio RDS has some
foibles, it does work for the most part. I'd be grateful if they could get
this together.

what can you do.

RE: cfthhp problem

2000-10-25 Thread Simon Horwith

The first thing I'd do, is increase or temporarily remove the timeout.
Also, if you need them, specify PROXYSERVER="hostname"
PROXYPORT="port_number" parameters, though I'm not sure whether or not this
error is indicitive of a proxy problem, to be honest. Just to state the
obvious, MAKE SURE YOUR SERVER IS CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET. Also, verify
that the target server is up and running.

Hmm..Calculate Elapsed Time

I'm timestamping logins and logouts, I want to be able to calculate the time
elapsed between the two. My question is, what format should I be writing these
timestamps in, and I'm hoping that there's a function I can use that is smart enough

CFX_CHECK_EMAIL tag problems

2000-10-25 Thread Michael Gagnon

Hi!

I've been trying the CFX_CHECK_EMAIL tag (by Michael Dinowitz)
and there seems to be bugs with it. It doesn't check everything in the
list.

It ignores levels:
3,4,7,8,14,15,16,17,18

It accepts the rest:
0,1,2,5,6,9,10,11,12,13

Also, it always detects a greater than sign even if I don't have any. (14)

Is there a more recent script than Oct. 17 1996?

Thanks!

Try DateDiff(datepart, login_timestamp, logout_timestamp). Make sure you
test for the 2 variables existence first, and be sure to convert them to
ODBC DATETIMES first, too.

RE: Hmm..Calculate Elapsed Time

2000-10-25 Thread Christopher Olive, CIO

if you're using SQL server, there's an SQL function called DateDiff. it
will calculate the difference of two date/time fields in the DB.

there's also a CF function called DateDiff. it will calculate the
difference of two date/time formatted strings (so you don't REALLY have to
use datetime if you don't want). however, it's recommended, as the DB can
do a lot of that work for you.

You might also want to wrap the cfhttp tag with a CFImpersonate tag or have
CFServer run under an account that has access to the internet. That was a
problem with one of our installations. System was not a recognized user on

Multi-table inserts & updates

2000-10-25 Thread John Allred

I need some advice on how to set up a form that will either insert or
update data to multiple tables in the same database. I have a parent and
two child tables in an Access database, and there is a one-to-many
relationship established between the parent and each of the children. I'd
like to keep this so I can cascade deletes, but if need be, I can work
around it.

At present, the on my entry template includes only one field
for one of the child tables. Using the following code in my action
template, I can use one form to insert a record in both tables.

select max(vid) as bid
from vendor

insert into bullets(bid, nbrOrder, bullet)
values ('#getID.bid#', '#nbrOrder#', '#bullet#')

Ideally, I'd like to be able to enter any number of child records at the
same time I create the parent record, using the same form. I'm thinking it
might be possible to switch to and include a for the
child tables.

Has anyone done something like this? And could you offer advice on this or
another approach. So far as I can find, CFWACK only has two paragraphs on
entering data in multiple tables (p. 271 in the 2nd ed.).

Thanks for any help.

This is 1/2 CF related

Actually it's an error in the Event Viewer within NT 4.0

I have SQL Server 6.5 installed under per seat licensing mode.

We purchased the Internet Connection license, but all it was
was a piece of paper saying we bought the license. Did I miss
something? Why are we getting this error message?

Querying a Query

2000-10-25 Thread Ray, James A

I have a very strange situation that me or may not be able to be solve
easly.

I have 4 tables that have various information in that link to one another.
Tables 1,2, and 3 have a one to one entries. Table 4 can have several
entries.

For example:
Table 1 PN = Table 2 PN
Table 1 PN = Table 3 PN
Table 1 SN = Table 3 SN
Tabel 3 PN = Table 4 PN (many entires

What happens is that if I have 3 records in table 4, the query will return 9
dups which makes since. I have tried various ways of building a result with
no luck.

The question is, is there a way to do a query on Tables 1,2 and 3 and then
use that query as a Table and do a query of that results and using Table 4
as well.

Example

Select a.FirstQueryFields b.Table4Fields
FROM FirstQuery A , Table4 B

If not, what is the best way of doing this? I hope the information is
enought to understand. Thanks for the help.

Subject: Querying a Query

I have a very strange situation that me or may not be able to be solve
easly.

I have 4 tables that have various information in that link to one another.
Tables 1,2, and 3 have a one to one entries. Table 4 can have several
entries.

For example:
Table 1 PN = Table 2 PN
Table 1 PN = Table 3 PN
Table 1 SN = Table 3 SN
Tabel 3 PN = Table 4 PN (many entires

What happens is that if I have 3 records in table 4, the query will return 9
dups which makes since. I have tried various ways of building a result with
no luck.

The question is, is there a way to do a query on Tables 1,2 and 3 and then
use that query as a Table and do a query of that results and using Table 4
as well.

Example

Select a.FirstQueryFields b.Table4Fields
FROM FirstQuery A , Table4 B

If not, what is the best way of doing this? I hope the information is
enought to understand. Thanks for the help.

Larry,
What is causing your site to crash? I've been running 4.5.1 (now sp1) with some
difficulty, but not too much.
Most of the time it crashes when a query to Oracle times out or hangs.

I have a shell script running that checks to see if a .cfm page is retrievable
every 30 seconds. If it can't get the page it stops, then starts the cfserver.
Not pretty, but I don't have clients complaining - and when I check the log files I
see that the service is
restarted as necessary.

What Solaris OS are you running? We're 2.6 here.

I'm writing a plain CF Custom Tag which also contains some JavaScript
functions. I'm thinking of using CFHTMLHEAD to write the JS functions
into the calling document's head.

Any opinions as to where to write the JS functions?
  * At whatever point the tag is called
  * In the head via CFHTMLHEAD
  * Other?

Thanks.

Re: SPARC Solaris site frustrated with ColdFusion

2000-10-25 Thread Larry W. Virden

Re: What is causing your site to crash?

If we knew that, we would be half way home to a fix ...

Seriously, over the past year we have run into a variety of
problems, most of which _SEEM_ to be related to the fact that we
are frequently running ColdFusion on a 14 CPU enterprise sized
SPARC Solaris box with Solaris 2.6. When we move the ColdFusion
app to a 'puny' box with 2 or 4 CPUs, the problems are either not
seen, or at least so infrequently seen as to be considered gone.

As I have stated, we are seeing crashes, hangs, CFSCHEDULE
hanging, etc.

Frankly, the Solaris system admins are threatening to remove
ColdFusion from the production environment, since it causes so
much grief... That's one reason why I am wondering what others
are using in place of ColdFusion - since they don't seem to be
able to get it to be stable, we need to find something either
stable or open source so we can fix it ourselves...

RE: SPARC Solaris site frustrated with ColdFusion

2000-10-25 Thread Larry W. Virden

I suspect the problem has to do with the Solaris version of
ColdFusion's threading code myself.

Our latest round of problems is with 4.5.1sp1. We won't put sp2
on a production server until it is formally released. It doesn't
look from the release notes for sp2 that it has any fixes for
the part of the code that's broken here anyways.

Ok,

I can't seem to get this problem figured out. Code is below. I
previously had a CF application with DB2/NT running on the back-end.
Everything worked just fine. I now transferred/recreated the database on
an AS/400 system. Using DB2 Connect to communicate between CF (running

I am getting a Datetime overflow error when assigning NULL values for
date fields. This worked fine on DB2/NT, but the AS/400 does not like
it. I have also made sure that my fields are setup to accept null
values. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I am passing these values though to the action file for insertion in to
the database, note the "" indicating NULL value.

I then evaluate the values of each field in the action file before the
SQL INSERT.

Lock once or twice?

2000-10-25 Thread Chris Norloff

Hi, I'm working on a system with CFIF statements reading session variables, then CFSET
statements setting session variables.

Is it better to
1. use one EXCLUSIVE lock for both the CFIF and CFSET statements, or
2. use an EXCLUSIVE lock around the CFSET statement and a READONLY lock around the
CFIF statement?

And, if option 2 is better, how do I do it without nesting CFLOCK statements (which I
understand shouldn't be done)? [Use a temporary variable?]

thanks,
Chris Norloff

EXAMPLE - EXCLUSIVE lock protects both read and write accesses, but is there a faster
way?

As a first step, I would remove the single quotes from around your date
values in the query statement.

Also, output your query string to the screen so you can see what is actually
